I give a formula for the zeta function of a projective toric hypersurface over a finite field and estimate its Newton polygon. As an application this formula allows us to compute the exact number of rational points on the families of Calabi-Yau manifolds in Mirror Symmetry.
The aim of this article is to illustrate, on the example of Dwork hypersurfaces, how the study of the representation of a finite group of automorphisms of a hypersurface in its etale cohomology allows to factor its zeta function.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements, $ψ$ a non-zero element of $\mathbb{F}_q$, and $n$ an integer $\geq 3$ prime to $q$. The aim of this article is to show that the zeta function of the projective variety over $\mathbb{F}_q$ defined by $X_ψ\colon x_1^n+...+x_n^n - n ψx_1... x_n=0$ has, when $n$ is prime and $X_ψ$ is non singular (i.e. when $ψ^n \neq 1$), an explicit decomposition in factors coming from affine varieties of odd dimension $\leq n-4$ which are of hypergeometric type. The method we use consists in counting separately the number of points of $X_ψ$ and of some vari…
We consider the one-parameter family of hypersurfaces in $\Pj^5$ with projective equation (X_1^5+X_2^5+X_3^5+X_4^5+X_5^5) = 5λX_1 X_2... X_5, (writing $λ$ for the parameter), proving that the Galois representations attached to their cohomologies are potentially automorphic, and hence that the zeta function of the family has meromorphic continuation throughout the complex plane.
We study in detail the family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces defined by x_1+...+x_n+1/(x_1...x_n)=t over a finite field k. We determine its local and global monodromy and the trivial factors of its moment zeta function and Dwork's unit root zeta function.
This paper investigates the density of hypersurfaces in a projective normal simplicial toric variety over a finite field having a quasismooth intersection with a given quasismooth subscheme. The result generalizes the formula found by B. Poonen for smooth projective varieties. As an application, we further analyze the density of hypersurfaces with bounds on their number of singularities and on the length of their singular schemes.
We give improvements of the deformation method for computing the zeta function of a generic projective hypersurface in characteristic~$p$ that either reduce the dependence on~$p$ of the time complexity to $\tilde{O}(p^{1/2})$ or that of the space complexity to $\tilde{O}(\log(p))$ while remaining polynomial in the other input parameters.
Given a hypersurface, $X$, prime $p$, the zeta function is a generating function for the number of $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ rational points of $X$. Until now, there is no algorithm for computing hypersurfaces with ADE singularities. Scott Stetson and Vladimir Baranovsky provided an algorithm with Mathematica for the ordinary double point case. In this paper, I go over a Sage algorithm for computing the zeta function of a hypersurface with ADE singularities over 3-dimensional projective space. To make the algorithm more efficient, I established an equivalence between a polynomial belonging to the Jacob…
We give an interim report on some improvements and generalizations of the Abbott-Kedlaya-Roe method to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate ample hypersurface in a projectively normal toric variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in linear time in $p$. These are illustrated with a number of examples including K3 surfaces, Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a cubic fourfold. The latter example is a non-special cubic fourfold appearing in the Ranestad-Voisin coplanar divisor on moduli space; this verifies that the coplanar divisor is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the sense of Hassett.
We construct classes in the motivic cohomology of certain 1-parameter families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric Fano n-folds, with applications to local mirror symmetry (growth of genus 0 instanton numbers) and inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations. In the case where the family is classically modular the classes are related to Belinson's Eisenstein symbol; the Abel-Jacobi map (or rational regulator) is computed in this paper for both kinds of cycles. For the "modular toric" families where the cycles essentially coincide, we obtain a motivic (and computationally effective) explanation of a p…
The purpose of this article is to give an explicit description, in terms of hypergeometric functions over finite fields, of zeta function of a certain type of smooth hypersurfaces that generalizes Dwork family. The point here is that we count the number of rational points employing both character sums and the theory of weights, which enables us to enlighten the calculation of the zeta function.
Let $X_λ$ and $X_λ'$ be monomial deformations of two Delsarte hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. In this paper we give a sufficient condition so that their zeta functions have a common factor. This generalises results by Doran, Kelly, Salerno, Sperber, Voight and Whitcher [arXiv:1612.09249], where they showed this for a particular monomial deformation of a Calabi-Yau invertible polynomial. It turns out that our factor can be of higher degree than the factor found in [arXiv:1612.09249].
Quasi algebraically closed fields, or $C_1$ fields, are defined in terms of a low degree condition. Namely, the field $K$ is $C_1$ if every degree $d$ hypersurface of the projective space $\mathbb{P}_K^n$ contains a $K$-point as soon as $d\leq n$. In this article we define a notion of low toric degree generalizing this condition for hypersurfaces of simplicial projective split toric varieties. This allows us to prove a particular case of the $C_1$ conjecture of Kollár, Lang and Manin : any smooth separably rationally connected variety that can be embedded as such a hypersurface over a $C_1$ fi…
Using the cohomology theory of Dwork, as developed by Adolphson and Sperber, we exhibit a deterministic algorithm to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate hypersurface defined over a finite field. This algorithm is particularly well-suited to work with polynomials in small characteristic that have few monomials (relative to their dimension). Our method covers toric, affine, and projective hypersurfaces and also can be used to compute the L-function of an exponential sum.
For a cycle of codimension 1 in a toric variety, its degree with respect to a nef toric divisor can be understood in terms of the mixed volume of the polytopes associated to the divisor and to the cycle. We prove here that an analogous combinatorial formula holds in the arithmetic setting: the global height of a 1-codimensional cycle with respect to a toric divisor equipped with a semipositive toric metric can be expressed in terms of mixed integrals of the $v$-adic roof functions associated to the metric and the Legendre-Fenchel dual of the $v$-adic Ronkin function of the Laurent polynomial o…
This paper intends to give a mathematical explanation for results on the zeta-function of some families of varieties recently obtained in the context of Mirror Symmetry. In doing so, we obtain concrete and explicit examples for some results recently used in algorithms to count points on smooth hypersurfaces in P^n. In particular, we extend the monomial-motive correspondence of Kadir and Yui and we give explicit solutions to the p-adic Picard-Fuchs equation associated with monomial deformations of Fermat hypersurfaces. As a by-product we obtain Poincare Duality for the Rigid cohomology of certa…
The Hasse-Witt matrix of a hypersurface in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$ gives essentially complete mod $p$ information about the zeta function of the hypersurface. But if the degree $d$ of the hypersurface is $\leq n$, the zeta function is trivial mod $p$ and the Hasse-Witt matrix is zero-by-zero. We generalize a classical formula for the Hasse-Witt matrix to obtain a matrix that gives a nontrivial congruence for the zeta function for all $d$. We also describe the differential equations satisfied by this matrix and prove that it is generically invertible.
This paper is devoted to the estimation of the number of points of bounded height on fibrations in toric varieties over algebraic varieties, generalizing previous work by Strauch and the second author. Under reasonable hypotheses on ``Arakelov L-functions'' of the base, we show how to deduce a good estimate for the open subset of the total space of the unerlying fibration in torus. In passing, we improve drastically the error term for toric varieties themselves, generalizing a theorem by de la Breteche over any number field.
We investigate the anticanonical height zeta function of a (non necessarily split) toric variety defined over a global field of positive characteristic, drawing our inspiration from the method used by Batyrev and Tschinkel to deal with the analogous problem over a number field. By the way, we give a detailed account of their method.
These are the notes from the summer school in Göttingen sponsored by NATO Advanced Study Institute on Higher-Dimensional Geometry over Finite Fields that took place in 2007. The aim was to give a short introduction on zeta functions over finite fields, focusing on moment zeta functions and zeta functions of affine toric hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we partially extend recent results of Wan concerning the relationship between the zeta functions of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and its (singular) mirror variety.
In this paper, we study the relation between the zeta function of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and the zeta function of its mirror. Two types of arithmetic relations are discovered. This motivates us to formulate two general arithmetic mirror conjectures for the zeta functions of a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau manifolds.
In this paper, we give an overview of the various general methods in computing the zeta function of an algebraic variety defined over a finite field, with an emphasis on computing the reduction modulo $p^m$ of the zeta function of a hypersurface, where $p$ is the characteristic of the finite field. In particular, this applies to the problem of counting rational points of an algebraic variety over a finite field.
In this note an improvement of the Katz's bound on the number of elements in a finite field with given trace and norm is given. The improvement is obtained by reducing the problem to estimating the number of rational points on certain toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and then to use detailed cohomological calculations by Rojas-Leon and the second author for such toric hypersurfaces.
We consider certain $K3$-fibered Calabi--Yau threefolds. One class of such Calabi--Yau threefolds are constructed by Hunt and Schimmrigk using twist maps. They are realized in weighted projective spaces as orbifolds of hypersurfaces. Our main goal of this paper is to investigate arithmetic properties of these Calabi--Yau threefolds. We also consider deformations of our Calabi--Yau threefolds, and we study the variation of the zeta-functions using $p$-adic rigid cohomology theory.
