The aim of antenna array synthesis is to achieve a desired radiation pattern with the minimum number of antenna elements. In this paper the antenna synthesis problem is studied from a totally new perspective. One of the key principles of compressive sensing is that the signal to be sensed should be sparse or compressible. This coincides with the requirement of minimum number of element in the antenna array synthesis problem. In this paper the antenna element of the array can be efficiently reduced via compressive sensing, which shows a great improvement to the existing antenna synthesis method. Moreover, the desired radiation pattern can be achieved in a very computation time which is even shorter than the existing method. Numerical examples are presented to show the high efficiency of the proposed method.
Massive MIMO systems with uniform circular and cylindrical antenna arrays are studied. Favorable propagation property is rigorously shown to hold asymptotically in LOS environment for a fixed antenna spacing and under some mild conditions. The analysis is based on a novel method using a Bessel function expansion, a new bounding technique and a simplified representation of inter-user interference for array geometries obeying Kronecker structure.
The radiation pattern of an antenna array depends on the excitation weights and the geometry of the array. Due to wind and atmospheric conditions, outdoor millimeter wave antenna elements are subject to full or partial blockages from a plethora of particles like dirt, salt, ice, and water droplets. Handheld devices are also subject to blockages from random finger placement and/or finger prints. These blockages cause absorption and scattering to the signal incident on the array, and change the array geometry. This distorts the far-field radiation pattern of the array leading to an increase in t…
Millimeter wave (mm-wave) communications is considered a promising technology for 5G networks. Exploiting beamforming gains with large-scale antenna arrays to combat the increased path loss at mm-wave bands is one of its defining features. However, previous works on mm-wave network analysis usually adopted oversimplified antenna patterns for tractability, which can lead to significant deviation from the performance with actual antenna patterns. In this paper, using tools from stochastic geometry, we carry out a comprehensive investigation on the impact of directional antenna arrays in mm-wave …
Non-linearities in radio-frequency (RF) transceiver hardware, particularly in power amplifiers, cause distortion in-band and out-of-band. Contrary to claims made in recent literature, in a multiple-antenna system this distortion is correlated across the antennas in the array. A significant implication of this fact is that out-of-band emissions caused by non-linearities are beamformed, in some cases into the same direction as the useful signal.
Hybrid analog-digital architectures are considered as promising candidates for implementing millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems since they enable a considerable reduction of the required number of costly radio frequency (RF) chains by moving some of the signal processing operations into the analog domain. However, the analog feed network, comprising RF dividers, combiners, phase shifters, and line connections, of hybrid MIMO architectures is not scalable due to its prohibitively high power consumption for large numbers of transmit antennas. Motivated …
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology for 5G cellular systems. To compensate for the severe path loss in mmWave systems, large antenna arrays are generally used to achieve significant beamforming gains. However, due to the high hardware and power consumption cost associated with radio frequency (RF) chains, it is desirable to achieve the large-antenna gains, but with only limited number of RF chains for mmWave communications. To this end, we study in this paper a new lens antenna array enabled mmWave MIMO communication system. We first show that the array response of…

Also the performance characteristics are examined of the coded modulations in the presence of finite size array geometries. This paper gives some insight into which of the theories are most useful in realistic deployments.
In practical mobile communication engineering applications, surfaces of antenna array deployment regions are usually uneven. Therefore, massive multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) communication systems usually transmit wireless signals by irregular antenna arrays. To evaluate the performance of irregular antenna arrays, the matrix correlation coefficient and ergodic received gain are defined for massive MIMO communication systems with mutual coupling effects. Furthermore, the lower bound of the ergodic achievable rate, symbol error rate (SER) and average outage probability are firstly derived for …
In this paper, we consider the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for estimation of a lens-embedded antenna array with deterministic parameters. Unlike CRLB of uniform linear array (ULA), it is noted that CRLB for direction of arrival (DoA) of lens-embedded antenna array is dominated by not only angle but characteristics of lens. Derivation is based on the approximation that amplitude of received signal with lens is approximated to Gaussian function. We confirmed that parameters needed to design a lens can be derived by standard deviation of Gaussian, which represents characteristic of received sig…
A spatially reconfigurable antenna arrays consists of an antenna array of finite length and fixed geometry which is displaced within a given area. Using these reconfigurable components, the performance of MIMO systems is remarkably improved by effectively positioning the array in its displacement area. This paper studies the large-system performance of MIMO setups with spatially reconfigurable antenna arrays when the displacement area is large. Considering fading channels, the distribution of the input-output mutual information is derived, and the asymptotic hardening property is demonstrated …
In the parallel calibration for transmitting phased arrays, the calibration receiver must separate the signals belonging to different antenna elements to avoid mutual interference. Existing algorithms encode different antenna elements' radiation with orthogonal signature codes, but these algorithms are far from desired for large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays. Considering the strictly limited resources on satellites, to improve hardware efficiency of large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays, in this work inspired by the idea of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) we design a series of non-orth…
In this paper, we investigate downlink power control in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks with distributed antenna arrays. The base station (BS) in each cell consists of multiple antenna arrays, which are deployed in arbitrary locations within the cell. Due to the spatial separation between antenna arrays, the large-scale propagation effect is different from a user to different antenna arrays in a cell, which makes power control a challenging problem as compared to conventional massive MIMO. We assume that the BS in each cell obtains the channel estimates via uplink pilots…

Among the practical challenges associated with massive MIMO systems are increased cost, power consumption, and physical size. In this work we study the implementation of massive MIMO antenna arrays using dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs), an emerging technology which inherently handles the aforementioned challenges. Specifical…
The multi-antenna coded caching problem, where the server having $L$ transmit antennas communicating to $K$ users through a wireless broadcast link, is addressed. In the problem setting, the server has a library of $N$ files, and each user is equipped with a dedicated cache of capacity $M$. The idea of extended placement delivery array (EPDA), an array which consists of a special symbol $\star$ and integers in a set $\{1,2,\dots,S\}$, is proposed to obtain a novel solution for the aforementioned multi-antenna coded caching problem. From a $(K,L,F,Z,S)$ EPDA, a multi-antenna coded caching schem…
A full multi--dimensional characterization of the angle of arrival (AoA) has immediate applications to the efficient operation of modern wireless communication systems. In this work, we develop a compressed sensing based method to extract multi-dimensional AoA information exploiting the sparse nature of the signal received by a sensor array. The proposed solution, based on the atomic $\ell_0$ norm, enables accurate gridless resolution of the AoA in systems with arbitrary 3D antenna arrays. Our approach allows characterizing the maximum number of distinct sources (or scatters) that can be ident…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication and network densification hold great promise for achieving high-rate communication in next-generation wireless networks. Cloud radio access network (CRAN), in which low-complexity remote radio heads (RRHs) coordinated by a central unit (CU) are deployed to serve users in a distributed manner, is a cost-effective solution to achieve network densification. However, when operating over a large bandwidth in the mmWave frequencies, the digital fronthaul links in a CRAN would be easily saturated by the large amount of sampled and quantized signals to be transfe…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology for the fifth-generation (5G) wireless system. However, the large number of antennas used and the wide signal bandwidth in mmWave systems render the conventional multi-antenna techniques increasingly costly in terms of signal processing complexity, hardware implementation, and power consumption. In this article, we investigate cost-effective mmWave communications by first providing an overview of the main existing techniques that offer different trade-offs between performance and cost, and then focusing our discussion on a promis…
Line-of-sight (LoS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) gives full spatial-multiplexing gain when the antenna array geometry and orientation are designed based on the inter-terminal distance. These known design methodologies, that hold for antenna arrays with fixed orientation, do not provide full MIMO gains for arbitrary array orientations. In this paper, we study LoS MIMO channels with random array orientations when the number of transmit antennas used for signalling is 2. We study the impact of common array geometries on error probability, and identify the code design parameter that descr…
In this paper we investigate the design of compressive antenna arrays for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation that aim to provide a larger aperture with a reduced hardware complexity by a linear combination of the antenna outputs to a lower number of receiver channels. We present a basic receiver architecture of such a compressive array and introduce a generic system model that includes different options for the hardware implementation. We then discuss the design of the analog combining network that performs the receiver channel reduction, and propose two design approaches. The first approac…
We illustrate potential benefits of using massive antenna arrays for wireless energy transfer (WET). Specifically, we analyze probability of outage in WET over fading channels when a base station (BS) with multiple antennas beamforms energy to a wireless sensor node (WSN). Our analytical results show that by using massive antenna arrays, the range of WET can be increased for a given target outage probability. We prove that by using multiple-antenna arrays at the BS, a lower downlink energy is required to get the same outage performance, resulting into savings of radiated energy. We show that f…
Antenna arrays have a long history of more than 100 years and have evolved closely with the development of electronic and information technologies, playing an indispensable role in wireless communications and radar. With the rapid development of electronic and information technologies, the demand for all-time, all-domain, and full-space network services has exploded, and new communication requirements have been put forward on various space/air/ground platforms. To meet the ever increasing requirements of the future sixth generation (6G) wireless communications, such as high capacity, wide cove…
In this paper, we consider the transmit and receive antenna array gain of massive MIMO systems. In particular, we look at their dependence on the number of antennas in the array, and the antenna spacing for uniform linear and uniform circular arrays. It is known that the transmit array gain saturates at a certain antenna spacing, but the receive array gain had not been considered. With our physically consistent analysis based on the Multiport Communication Theory, we show that the receive array gain does not saturate, but that there is a peak at a certain antenna spacing when there is no decou…
In most multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, e.g., Massive MIMO, the antenna spacing is generally no less than half a wavelength. It helps to reduce the mutual coupling and therefore facilitate the system design. The maximum array gain is the number of antennas in this settings. However, when the antenna spacing is made very small, the array gain of a compact array can be proportional to the square of the number of antennas - a value much larger than the traditional array. To achieve this so-called "superdirectivity" however, the calculation of the excitation coefficien…
Compressed Sensing (CS) based channel estimation techniques have recently emerged as an effective way to acquire the channel of millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems with a small number of measurements. These techniques, however, are based on prior knowledge of transmit and receive array manifolds, and assume perfect antenna arrays at both the transmitter and the receiver. In the presence of antenna imperfections, the geometry and response of the arrays are modified. This distorts the CS measurement matrix and results in channel estimation errors. This paper studies the effects of both transmit and…
The densely packed antennas of millimeter-Wave (mmWave) MIMO systems are often blocked by the rain, snow, dust and even by fingers, which will change the channel's characteristics and degrades the system's performance. In order to solve this problem, we propose a cross-entropy inspired antenna array diagnosis detection (CE-AAD) technique by exploiting the correlations of adjacent antennas, when blockages occur at the transmitter. Then, we extend the proposed CE-AAD algorithm to the case, where blockages occur at transmitter and receiver simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the prop…

In this paper, we implement hybrid Woodward-Lawson-Neural Networks and weighted Fourier method to synthesize antenna arrays. The neural networks (NN) is applied here to simplify the modeling of MIMO antenna arrays by assessing phases. The main problem is obviously to find optimal weights of the linear antenna array elements giving radiation pattern with minimum sidelobe level (SLL) and hence ameliorating the antenna array performance. To attain this purpose, an antenna array for reliable Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) applications with frequency at 2.45 GHz is implemented. To validate t…
Estimation of User Terminals' (UTs') Angle of Arrival (AoA) plays a significant role in the next generation of wireless systems. Due to high demands, energy efficiency concerns, and scarcity of available resources, it is pivotal how these resources are used. Installed antennas and their corresponding hardware at the Base Station (BS) are of these resources. In this paper, we address the problem of antenna selection to minimize Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) of a planar antenna array when fewer antennas than total available antennas have to be used for a UT. First, the optimal antenna selection …

In the considered model, the service time is minimized by minimizing the wireless transmission time as well as the control time that is needed for movement and stabilization of the drones. To minimi…
The paper introduces a high gain end-fire printed antenna operating at 14 GHz with a bandwidth of 2 GHz. The 3x3 antenna sub-array formed of this element is used to present its beam steering and multi-beam-switching capabilities for millimeter wave Massive MIMO antenna arrays of 5G networks. The co-existence of these two techniques in a Massive MIMO sub-array, aided by the use of a simple two vector excitation matrix technique, is shown in this paper. The high gain and small form factor of the antenna is useful in applications, like 5G arrays, where space is premium and the inherent layered st…
The aim of this paper is to analyze the array synthesis for 5 G massive MIMO systems in the line-of-sight working condition. The main result of the numerical investigation performed is that non-uniform arrays are the natural choice in this kind of application. In particular, by using non-equispaced arrays, we show that it is possible to achieve a better average condition number of the channel matrix and a significantly higher spectral efficiency. Furthermore, we verify that increasing the array size is beneficial also for circular arrays, and we provide some useful rules-of-thumb for antenna a…
In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm that can dramatically reduce the number of antenna elements needed to accurately predict the direction of arrival (DOA) for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar. The new proposed algorithm predicts the received signal of a large antenna setup using reduced number of antenna by using coupled dictionary learning. Hence, this enables the MIMO radar to resolve more paths, which could not be resolved by the fewer antennas. Specifically, we overcome the problem of inaccurate DOA estimation due to a small virtual array setup. For example, we can us…

Radio frequency (RF) hardware architectures with a single power amplifier are reviewed, compared, and found superior to conventional MIMO implementations in terms of cost, dissipated heat, and physical size. This progress on the RF-side allows to merge the two competing cellular concepts of virtual and massive MIMO into a hybrid approach of remote radio head…
Employing low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) coupled with large antenna arrays at the receivers has drawn considerable interests in the millimeter wave (mm-wave) system. Since mm-wave channels are sparse in angular dimensions, exploiting the structure could reduce the number of measurements while achieve acceptable performance at the same time. Motivated by the variational Bayesian line spectral estimation (VALSE) algorithm which treats the angles as random parameters, in contrast with previous works which confine the estimate to the set of grid angle points and induce grid mis…
