In [arXiv:0804.3035] we studied an interacting particle system which can be also interpreted as a stochastic growth model. This model belongs to the anisotropic KPZ class in 2+1 dimensions. In this paper we present the results that are relevant from the perspective of stochastic growth models, in particular: (a) the surface fluctuations are asymptotically Gaussian on a sqrt(ln(t)) scale and (b) the correlation structure of the surface is asymptotically given by the massless field.
We generalize the surface growth model of Gates and Westcott to arbitrary inclination. The exact steady growth velocity is of saddle type with principal curvatures of opposite sign. According to Wolf this implies logarithmic height correlations, which we prove by mapping the steady state of the surface to world lines of free fermions with chiral boundary conditions.
We introduce a self-organized surface growth model in 2+1 dimensions with anisotropic avalanche process, which is expected to be in the universality class of the anisotropic quenched Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with alternative signs of the nonlinear KPZ terms. It turns out that the surface height correlation functions in each direction scales distinctively. The anisotropic behavior is attributed to the asymmetric behavior of the quenched KPZ equation in 1+1 dimensions with respect to the sign of the nonlinear KPZ term.
Time correlations for KPZ growth in 1+1 dimensions are reconsidered. We discuss flat, curved, and stationary initial conditions and are interested in the covariance of the height as a function of time at a fixed point on the substrate. In each case the power laws of the covariance for short and long times are obtained. They are derived from a variational problem involving two independent Airy processes. For stationary initial conditions we derive an exact formula for the stationary covariance with two approaches: (1) the variational problem and (2) deriving the covariance of the time-integrate…
We investigate the radius distributions (RD) of surfaces obtained with large-scale simulations of radial clusters that belong to the KPZ universality class. For all investigated models, the RDs are given by the Tracy-Widom distribution of the Gaussian unitary ensemble, in agreement with the conjecture of the KPZ universality class for curved surfaces. The quantitative agreement was also confirmed by two-point correlation functions asymptotically given by the covariance of the Airy$_2$ process. Our simulation results fill the last lacking gap of the conjecture that had been recently verified an…
We examine height-height correlations in the transient growth regime of the 2+1 Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, with a particular focus on the {\it spatial covariance} of the underlying two-point statistics, higher-dimensional analog of the 1+1 KPZ Class Airy$_1$ process. Making comparison to AFM kinetic roughening data in 2d organic thin films, we use our universal 2+1 KPZ spatial covariance to extract key scaling parameters for this experimental system. Additionally, we explore the i) height, ii) local roughness, and iii) extreme value distributions characteristic of these olig…
We study an anisotropic variant of the two-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, that is relevant to describe growth of vicinal surfaces and has Gaussian, logarithmically rough, stationary states. While the folklore belief (based on one-loop Renormalization Group) is that the equation has the same scaling behaviour as the (linear) Edwards-Wilkinson equation, we prove that, on the contrary, the non-linearity induces the emergence of a logarithmic super-diffusivity. This phenomenon is similar in flavour to the super-diffusivity for two-dimensional fluids and driven particle systems.
We study discrete KPZ growth models deposited on square lattice substrates, whose (average) lateral size enlarges as $L= L_0 + ωt^γ$. Our numerical simulations reveal that the competition between the substrate expansion and the increase of the correlation length parallel to the substrate, $ξ\simeq c t^{1/z}$, gives rise to a number of interesting results. For instance, when $γ< 1/z$ the interface becomes fully correlated, but its squared roughness, $W_2$, keeps increasing as $W_2 \sim t^{2αγ}$, as previously observed for 1D systems. A careful analysis of this scaling, accounting for an intrins…
We suggest a class of direct sample estimates for the two-point quadratic statistical functions of multidimensional data, which includes: estimates of the sample autocovariance function (AcF), sample mean square increment (also, structure) function, and the estimate of the power spectrum. The central estimate for the class is the sample AcF, which is constructed as to represent the finite Fourier transform of the periodogram estimate of the spectrum and is positive semidefinite. The estimate explicitly account for the anisotropy of the fields in all spatial directions and is illustrated on two…
We investigate solid-on-solid models that belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class on substrates that expand laterally at a constant rate by duplication of columns. Despite the null global curvature, we show that all investigated models have asymptotic height distributions and spatial covariances in agreement with those expected for the KPZ subclass for curved surfaces. In $1+1$ dimensions, the height distribution and covariance are given by the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution and the Airy$_2$ process, instead of the GOE and Airy$_1$ foreseen for flat interfaces. These results i…
We introduce a non-perturbative renormalization approach which identifies stable fixed points in any dimension for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang dynamics of rough surfaces. The usual limitations of real space methods to deal with anisotropic (self-affine) scaling are overcome with an indirect functional renormalization. The roughness exponent $α$ is computed for dimensions $d=1$ to 8 and it results to be in very good agreement with the available simulations. No evidence is found for an upper critical dimension. We discuss how the present approach can be extended to other self-affine problems.
We report extensive numerical simulations of growth models belonging to the nonlinear molecular beam epitaxy (nMBE) class, on flat (fixed-size) and expanding substrates (ES). In both $d=1+1$ and $2+1$, we find that growth regime height distributions (HDs), and spatial and temporal covariances are universal, but are dependent on the initial conditions, while the critical exponents are the same for flat and ES systems. Thus, the nMBE class does split into subclasses, as does the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class. Applying the "KPZ ansatz" to nMBE models, we estimate the cumulants of the $1+1$ HDs.…
We solve exactly a special case of the anisotropic directed bond percolation problem in three dimensions, in which the occupation probability is 1 along two spatial directions, by mapping it to a five-vertex model. We determine the asymptotic shape of the ininite cluster and hence the direction dependent critical probability. The exponents characterising the fluctuations of the boundary of the wetted cluster in d-dimensions are related to those of the (d-2)-dimensional KPZ equation.
The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class is a paradigmatic example of universality in nonequilibrium phenomena, but clear experimental evidences of asymptotic 2D-KPZ statistics are still very rare, and far less understanding stems from its short-time behavior. We tackle such issues by analyzing surface fluctuations of CdTe films deposited on polymeric substrates, based on a huge spatio-temporal surface sampling acquired through atomic force microscopy. A \textit{pseudo}-steady state (where average surface roughness and spatial correlations stay constant in time) is observed at initial times, persis…
We construct a family of stochastic growth models in 2+1 dimensions, that belong to the anisotropic KPZ class. Appropriate projections of these models yield 1+1 dimensional growth models in the KPZ class and random tiling models. We show that correlation functions associated to our models have determinantal structure, and we study large time asymptotics for one of the models. The main asymptotic results are: (1) The growing surface has a limit shape that consists of facets interpolated by a curved piece. (2) The one-point fluctuations of the height function in the curved part are asymptoticall…
Inspired by the recent results on totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes on a periodic lattice with short-ranged quenched hopping rates [A. Haldar, A. Basu, Phys Rev Research 2, 043073 (2020)], we study the universal scaling properties of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with short-ranged quenched columnar disorder in general d-dimensions. We show that there are generic propagating modes in the system that have their origin in the quenched disorder and make the system anisotropic. We argue that the presence of the propagating modes actually make the effects of the quenched disorde…
We study the influence of particle shape on growth processes at the edges of evaporating drops. Aqueous suspensions of colloidal particles evaporate on glass slides, and convective flows during evaporation carry particles from drop center to drop edge, where they accumulate. The resulting particle deposits grow inhomogeneously from the edge in two-dimensions, and the deposition front, or growth line, varies spatio-temporally. Measurements of the fluctuations of the deposition front during evaporation enable us to identify distinct growth processes that depend strongly on particle shape. Sphere…
Traditionally, time-development of the mean square displacement has been employed to determine the diffusion coefficient from the trajectories of single particles. However, this approach is sensitive to the noise and the motion blur upon image acquisition. Recently, Vestergaard et al. has proposed a novel method based on the covariance between the shifted displacement series. This approach gives a more robust estimator of the diffusion coefficient of one-dimensional diffusion without bias, i.e., when mean velocity is zero. Here, we extend this approach to a potentially biased random walk on a …
We study in the present article the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation $$ \partial_t h(t,x)=νΔh(t,x)+λ|\nabla h(t,x)|^2 +\sqrt{D}\, η(t,x), \qquad (t,x)\in\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{R}^d $$ in $d\ge 3$ dimensions in the perturbative regime, i.e. for $λ>0$ small enough and a smooth, bounded, integrable initial condition $h_0=h(t=0,\cdot)$. The forcing term $η$ in the right-hand side is a regularized space-time white noise. The exponential of $h$ -- its so-called Cole-Hopf transform -- is known to satisfy a linear PDE with multiplicative noise. We prove a large-scale diffusive limit for the solut…
We present a comprehensive numerical investigation of non-universal parameters and corrections related to interface fluctuations of models belonging to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, in d=1+1, for both flat and curved geometries. We analyzed two classes of models. In the isotropic models the non-universal parameters are uniform along the surface, whereas in the anisotropic growth they vary. In the latter case, that produces curved surfaces, the statistics must be computed independently along fixed directions. The ansatz h = v t + (Γt)^{1/3} χ+ η, where χis a Tracy-Widom (geo…
A crystal surface which is miscut with respect to a high symmetry plane exhibits steps with a characteristic distance. It is argued that the continuum description of growth on such a surface, when desorption can be neglected, is given by the anisotropic version of the conserved KPZ equation (T. Sun, H. Guo, and M. Grant, Phys. Rev. A 40, 6763 (1989)) with non-conserved noise. A one--loop dynamical renormalization group calculation yields the values of the dynamical exponent and the roughness exponent which are shown to be the same as in the isotropic case. The results presented here should app…
We show that the emergence of different surface patterns (ripples, dots) can be well understood by a suitable mapping onto the simplest nonequilibrium lattice gases and cellular automata.Using this efficient approach difficult, unanswered questions of surface growth and its scaling can be studied. The mapping onto binary variables facilitates effective simulations and enables one to consider very large system sizes. We have confirmed that the fundamental Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class is stable against a competing roughening diffusion, while a strong smoothing diffusion leads to lo…
