We present results of micromagnetic simulations of thin ferromagnetic rings undergoing magnetization reversal. This geometry is one of few examples in micromagnetics in which the transition states have been found analytically in a 1D model. According to this model, at low fields and large ring sizes, the energetically preferred transition state is a localized magnetization fluctuation (instanton saddle). At high fields and small ring size, the preferred saddle state is a uniformly rotated magnetization (constant saddle). In the first part of this paper, we use numerical micromagnetic simulations to test these predictions of the 1D analytical model for more realistic situations, including a variety of ring radii, annular widths and magnetic fields. The predicted activation energies for magnetization reversal are found to be in close agreement with numerical results, even for rings with a large annular width where the 1D approximation would be expected to break down. We find that this approximation breaks down only when the ring's annular width exceeds its radius. In the second part, we present new metastable states found in the large radius limit and discuss how they provide a more complete understanding of the energy landscape of magnetic nanorings.
We investigate magnetization reversal processes of magnetic nanorings. Using a recently developed efficient cartesian coordinates fast multipole method, magnetization switching phase diagrams are constructed for such structures. We find that the dominant switching mechanisms strongly depend on the relative spatial dimensions of the rings, i.e. height, width and radius. Furthermore, they are found to depend on a characteristic exchange length scale, which is determined by the competing short-range ferromagnetic and long-range dipolar interactions in these systems. Detailed simulations allow us …
We study permalloy nanorings that are lithographically fabricated with narrow gaps that break the rotational symmetry of the ring while retaining the vortex ground state, using both micromagnetic simulations and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The vortex chirality in these structures can be readily set with an in-plane magnetic field and easily probed by MFM due to the field associated with the gap, suggesting such rings for possible applications in storage technologies. We find that the gapped ring edge characteristics (i.e., edge profile and gap shape) are critical in determining the magnet…
Micromagnetics simulation based on the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation has long been a powerful method for modeling magnetization dynamics and reversal of three-dimensional (3D) magnets. For two-dimensional (2D) magnets, the magnetization reversal always accompanies the collapse of the magnetization even at low temperatures due to intrinsic strong spin fluctuation. We propose a micromagnetic theory that explicitly takes into account the rapid demagnetization and remagnetization dynamics of 2D magnets during magnetization reversal. We apply the theory to a single-domain magnet …

Magnetization reversal mechanisms and impact of magnetization direction are studied in square arrays of interconnected circular permalloy nanorings using MOKE, local imaging, numerical simulations and transport techniques.
We report here the results of two-dimensional electron gas based micro-Hall magnetometry measurements and micromagnetic simulations of dipolar coupled nanomagnets of Ni80Fe20 arranged in a double ring-like geometry. We observe that although magnetic force microscopy images exhibit single domain like magnetic states for the nanostructures, their reversal processes may undergo complex behavior. The details of such reversal behavior is observed as specific features in micro-Hall magnetometry data which compares well with the micromagnetic simulation data.
In this work, and by means of micromagnetic simulations, we study the magnetic properties of toroidal nanomagnets. The magnetization ground state for different values of the aspect ratio between the toroidal and polar radii of the nanotorus has been obtained. The hysteresis curves are also obtained, evidencing the existence of two reversal modes depending on the geometry: a vortex mode and a coherent rotation. A comparison between toroidal and cylindrical nanoparticles has been performed evidencing that nanotori can accommodate a vortex as the ground state for smaller volume than cylindrical n…
We report here the results of micromagnetic simulations of square artificial spin ice (ASI) systems with defects. The defects are introduced by misaligning of a nanomagnet at the vertex. In these defective systems, we are able to stabilize emergent monopole-like state by applying a small external field. We observe a systematic change of dipolar energies of the systems with varying misalignment angle. The fields at which the emergent monopoles are created vary linearly with the dipolar energies of the systems. Our results clearly show that the magnetization reversal of the ASI systems is intric…
Thin nanomagnetic rings have generated interest for fundamental studies of magnetization reversal and also for their potential in various applications, particularly as magnetic memories. They are a rare example of a geometry in which an analytical solution for the rate of thermally induced magnetic reversal has been determined, in an approximation whose errors can be estimated and bounded. In this work, numerical simulations of soft ferromagnetic rings are used to explore aspects of the analytical solution. The evolution of the energy near the transition states confirms that, consistent with a…
An atomic level micromagnetic model of granular recording media is developed and applied to examine external field-induced grain switching at elevated temperatures which captures non-uniform reversal modes. The results are compared with traditional methods which employ the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations based on uniformly magnetized grains with assigned intrinsic temperature profiles for $M(T)$ and $K(T)$. Using nominal parameters corresponding to high-anisotropy FePt-type media envisioned for Energy Assisted Magnetic Recording, our results demonstrate that atomic-level reversal slightly re…
The reversal of a uniform axial magnetization in a ferromagnetic nanotube (FNT) has been predicted to nucleate and propagate through vortex domains forming at the ends. In dynamic cantilever magnetometry measurements of individual FNTs, we identify the entry of these vortices as a function of applied magnetic field and show that they mark the nucleation of magnetization reversal. We find that the entry field depends sensitively on the angle between the end surface of the FNT and the applied field. Micromagnetic simulations substantiate the experimental results and highlight the importance of t…
We simulate the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) dynamics of a uniaxial nanomagnet out to sub-millisecond timescales using a graphical processing unit based micromagnetic code and determine the effect of geometrical tilts between the spin-current and uniaxial anisotropy axes on the thermally assisted reversal dynamics. The asymptotic behavior of the switching time ($I\rightarrow 0$, $<τ>\propto\exp(-ξ(1-I)^2)$) is approached gradually, indicating a broad crossover regime between ballistic and thermally assisted spin transfer reversal. Interestingly, the mean switching time is shown to …
Current-induced magnetization dynamics in Co/Cu/Co trilayer nanopillars (~100nm in diameter) has been studied experimentally for large applied fields perpendicular to the layers. An abrupt and hysteretic increase in dynamic resistance is observed at high current densities for one polarity of the current, comparable to the giant magnetoresistance effect observed at low fields. A micromagnetic model, that includes a spin-transfer torque, suggests that the current induces a complete reversal of the thin Co layer to alignment antiparallel to the applied field-that is, to a state of maximum magneti…
The half antivortex, a fundamental topological structure which determines magnetization reversal of submicron magnetic devices with domain walls, has been suggested also to play a crucial role in spin torque induced vortex core reversal in circular disks. Here we report on magnetization reversal in circular disks with nanoholes through consecutive metastable states with half antivortices. In-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance and broadband susceptibility measurements accompanied by micromagnetic simulations reveal that cobalt disks with two and three linearly arranged nanoholes directed at 45…
Magnetic nanowires (NW) are promising candidates for heat generation under AC-field application due to their large shape anisotropy. They may be used for catalysis, hyperthermia or water purification treatments. In the present work we theoretically evaluate the heat dissipated by a single magnetic nanowire, originated from the domain wall dynamics under the action of an AC-field. We compare the Permalloy NWs (which demagnetize via the transverse wall propagation) with the Co fcc NWs whose reversal mode is via a vortex domain wall. The average hysteresis loop areas -which are proportional to th…
Using micromagnetic simulations we demonstrate core reversal of a fixed magnetic skyrmion by modulating the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of a nanomagnet with an electric field. We can switch reversibly between two skyrmion states and two ferromagnetic states, i.e. skyrmion states with the magnetization of the core pointing down/up and periphery pointing up/down, and ferromagnetic states with magnetization pointing up/down, by sequential increase and decrease of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The switching between these states is explained by the fact that the spin texture correspo…
Modulation of stress anisotropy of magnetostrictive nanomagnets with strain offers an extremely energy-efficient method of magnetization reversal. The reversal process, however, is often incoherent and hence error-prone in the presence of thermal noise at room temperature. Occurrence of incoherent metastable states in the potential landscape of the nanomagnet can further exacerbate the error. Stochastic micromagnetic simulations at room temperature are used to understand and calculate energy dissipations and switching error probabilities in this important magnetization switching methodology. W…
Ordered ferromagnetic nanowire arrays are widely studied due to the diversity of possible applications. However, there is still no complete understanding of the relation between the array's parameters and its magnetic behavior. The effect of vortex states on the magnetization reversal of large-diameter nanowires is of particular interest. Here, we compare analytical and micromagnetic models with experimental results for three arrays of iron nanowires with diameters of 33, 52 and 70 nm in order to find the balance between the number of approximations and resources used for the calculations. The…
We report on room temperature magnetoresistance and low frequency noise in sub-100nm elliptic CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions with ultrathin (0.9nm) barriers. For magnetic fields applied along the hard axis, we observe current induced magnetization switching between the antiparallel and parallel alignments at DC current densities as low as 4*106A/cm2. We attribute the low value of the critical current to the influence of localized reductions in the tunnel barrier, which affects the current distribution. The analysis of random telegraph noise, which appears in the field interval near …
Magnetic skyrmions formed at temperatures around room temperature in square-based parallelepiped magnetic FePt nanoparticles with perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) were studied during the magnetization reversal using micromagnetic simulations. Finite Differences (FD) method were used for the solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. Magnetic configurations exhibiting Néel skyrmionic formations were detected. The magnetic skyrmions can be created in different systems generated by the variation of external field, side length and width of the squared-based parallelepiped m…
The pinning effect of the periodic diameter modulations on the domain wall propagation in FeCoCu individual nanowires is determined by Magnetic Force Microscopy, MFM. A main bistable magnetic configuration is firstly concluded from MFM images characterized by the spin reversal between two nearly single domain states with opposite axial magnetization. Complementary micromagnetic simulations confirm a vortex mediated magnetization reversal process. A refined MFM imaging procedure under variable applied field allows us to observe metastable magnetic states where the propagating domain wall is pin…
Using a combination of magnetometry and magnetotransport techniques, we studied temperature and magnetic field behavior of magnetization in Py/Gd heterostructures. It was shown quantitatively that proximity with Py enhances magnetic order of Gd. Micromagnetic simulations demonstrate that a spin-flop transition observed in a Py/Gd bilayer is due to exchange-spring rotation of magnetization in the Gd layer. Transport measurements show that the magnetoresistance of a [Py(2 nm)/Gd(2 nm)]25 multilayer changes sign at the compensation temperature and below 20 K. The positive magnetoresistance above …
We investigate magnetic anisotropy and magnetization reversal mechanism in chromium telluride thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We report existence of strong perpendicular anisotropy in these thin films, along with a relatively strong second order anisotropy contribution. The angular variation of the switching field observed from the magnetoresistance measurement is explained quantitatively using a one-dimensional defect model. The model reveals the relative roles of nucleation and pinning in the magnetization reversal, depending on the applied field orientation. Micromagnetic simula…
We present a study of the magnetic dynamics associated with nanosecond scale magnetic switching driven by the spin Hall effect in 3-terminal nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions (3T-MTJs) with in-plane magnetization. Utilizing fast pulse measurements in a variety of material stacks and detailed micromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate that this unexpectedly fast and reliable magnetic reversal is facilitated by the self-generated Oersted field, and the short-pulse energy efficiency can be substantially enhanced by micromagnetic curvature in the magnetic free layer. The sign of the Oersted field…
Implementation of skyrmion based energy efficient and high-density data storage devices requires aggressive scaling of skyrmion size. Ferrimagnetic materials are considered to be a suitable platform for this purpose due to their low saturation magnetization (i.e. smaller stray field). However, we show by performing rigorous micromagnetic simulation that such scaling of skyrmion size by lowering saturation magnetization while applicable in infinite films or where the skyrmion size is very small compared to the film's lateral dimension, does not hold in confined geometries. We also found in conf…
We show that the spin-orbit torque induced magnetization switching in nanomagnets presenting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction is governed by a chiral domain nucleation at the edges. The nucleation is induced by the DMI and the applied in-plane magnetic field followed by domain wall propagation. Our micromagnetic simulations show that the DC switching current can be defined as the edge nucleation current, which decreases strongly with increasing amplitude of the DMI. This description allows us to build a simple analytical model to quantitatively predict the switching current. We find tha…
We present results of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments and micromagnetic simulations for a distorted, 2D Kagome artificial spin ice. The distorted structure is created by continuously modulating the 2D primitive lattice translation vectors of a periodic honeycomb lattice, according to an aperiodic Fibonacci sequence used to generate 1D quasicrystals. Experimental data and micromagnetic simulations show the Fibonacci distortion causes broadening and splitting of FMR modes into multiple branches, which accompany the increasing number of segment lengths and orientations that develop with…
Near the Curie temperature the anisotropy field of magnetically uniaxial L10 FePt is expected to follow the scaling law $(1-T/Tc)^β$ where $T$ is the temperature and $T_c$ the Curie temperature. In the literature $β$ values between 0.36 and 0.65 have been reported. Based on recording measurements and micromagnetic analysis, we show that only the values of $β$ near the low end of the reported range are compatible with the data. We also conclude that thermally activated magnetization reversal at temperatures near $T_c$ cannot be ignored, even at time scales smaller than 1 ns. We demonstrate that…

Scanning transmission x-ray microscopy is employed to investigate experimentally the reversal of the magnetic vortex core polarity in cylindrical Ni81Fe19 nanodisks triggered by two orthogonal monopolar magnetic field pulses with peak amplitude $B_0$, pulse length $τ$=60 ps and delay time $Δ$t in the range from -400 ps to +400 ps between the two pulses. The two pulses are oriented in-plane in the x- and y-direction. We have experimentally studied vortex core reversal as function of $B_0$ and $Δ$t. The resulting phase diagram shows large regions of unidirectional vortex core switching where the…
Rotating the magnetization of a shape anisotropic magnetostrictive nanomagnet with voltage-generated stress/strain dissipates much less energy than most other magnetization rotation schemes, but its application to writing bits in non-volatile magnetic memory has been hindered by the fundamental inability of stress/strain to rotate magnetization by full 180 degrees. Normally, stress/strain can rotate the magnetization of a shape anisotropic elliptical nanomagnet by only up to 90 degrees, resulting in incomplete magnetization reversal. Recently, we predicted that applying uniaxial stress sequent…
DC current induced magnetization reversal and magnetization oscillation was observed in 500 nm large size Co90Fe10/Cu/Ni80Fe20 pillars. A perpendicular external field enhanced the coercive field separation between the reference layer (Co90Fe10) and free layer (Ni80Fe20) in the pseudo spin valve, allowing a large window of external magnetic field for exploring the free-layer reversal. The magnetization precession was manifested in terms of the multiple peaks on the differential resistance curves. Depending on the bias current and applied field, the regions of magnetic switching and magnetizatio…
The interplay between intrinsic and surface/interface-induced magnetic anisotropies strongly in- fluences magnetization processes in nanomagnetic systems. We develop a micromagnetic theory to describe the field-driven reorientation in nanomagnets with cubic and uniaxial anisotropies. Spin configurations in competing phases and parameters of accompanying multidomain states are calculated as functions of the applied field and the magnetic anisotropies. The constructed magnetic phase diagrams allow to classify different types of the magnetization reversal and to provide detailed analysis of the s…
We consider the general Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) dynamical theory underlying the magnetization switching rates of a thin film uniaxial magnet subject to spin-torque effects and thermal fluctuations (thermal noise). After discussing the various dynamical regimes governing the switching phenomena, we present analytical results for the mean switching time behavior. Our approach, based on explicitly solving the first passage time problem, allows for a straightforward analysis of the thermally assisted, low spin-torque, switching asymptotics of thin film magnets. To verify our theory, we have …
We report a study of the magnetization reversals and skyrmion configurations in two systems - Pt/Co/MgO and Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayers, where magnetic skyrmions are stabilized by a combination of dipolar and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) diagrams of low-DMI Pt/Co/MgO and high-DMI Ir/Fe/Co/Pt exhibit stark differences, which are identified by micromagnetic simulations to be indicative of hybrid and pure Néel skyrmions, respectively. Tracking the evolution of FORC features in multilayers with dipolar interactions and DMI, we find that the negative FORC …
We propose a two terminal nanomagnetic memory element based on magnetization reversal of a perpendicularly magnetized nanomagnet employing a unipolar voltage pulse that modifies the perpendicular anisotropy of the system. Our work demonstrates that the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) can create alternative route for magnetization reversal that obviates the need for utilizing precessional magnetization dynamics as well as a bias magnetic field that are employed in traditional voltage control of magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) based switching of perpendicular magnetization. We sho…
We use a scanning nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference device to map the stray magnetic field produced by individual ferromagnetic nanotubes (FNTs) as a function of applied magnetic field. The images are taken as each FNT is led through magnetic reversal and are compared with micromagnetic simulations, which correspond to specific magnetization configurations. In magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the FNT long axis, their magnetization appears to reverse through vortex states, i.e.\ configurations with vortex end domains or -- in the case of a sufficiently short FNT -- wi…
Rotating all islands in square artificial spin ice (ASI) uniformly about their centres gives rise to the recently reported pinwheel ASI. At angles around 45$^\mathrm{o}$, the antiferromagnetic ordering changes to ferromagnetic and the magnetic configurations of the system exhibit near-degeneracy, making it particularly sensitive to small perturbations. We investigate through micromagnetic modelling the influence of dipolar fields produced by physically extended islands in field-driven magnetisation processes in pinwheel arrays, and compare the results to hysteresis experiments performed in-sit…
Controlling the magnetization reversal process of magnetic elements is important for a wide range of applications that make use of magnetoresistive effects, but is difficult to achieve for devices that require adjacent thin film structures capable of contacting an individual molecule or quantum dot. We report on the fabrication and measurement of ferromagnetic break junction devices with planar, elliptical leads to address the particular challenge of controlling the relative magnetization alignment between neighboring electrodes. Low temperature transport measurements, supported by finite-elem…
The concept of perpendicular shape anisotropy spin-transfer torque magnetic random-access memory (PSA-STT-MRAM) consists in increasing the storage layer thickness to values comparable to the cell diameter, to induce a perpendicular shape anisotropy in the magnetic storage layer. Making use of that contribution, the downsize scalability of the STT-MRAM may be extended towards sub-20 nm technological nodes, thanks to a reinforcement of the thermal stability factor $Δ$. Although the larger storage layer thickness improves $Δ$, it is expected to negatively impact the writing current and switching …
Bloch lines are formed to reduce the magnetostatic energy generated by the Bloch walls in uniaxial magnets. Recently, it is reported that Bloch lines play important roles in the emergence and helicity reversal of magnetic bubbles in Sc-substitute M-type hexaferrites (BaFe$_{12-x-0.05}$Sc$_{x}$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$). Although Bloch lines have been discussed on the basis of micromagnetic simulations, the detailed structure was not observed directly. In this study, we investigated the microscopic structures of Bloch lines in BaFe$_{10.35}$Sc$_{1.6}$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$ uniaxial magnets. Differential…
Recently we have reported on the magnetization dynamics of a single CrO$_2$ grain studied by micro Hall magnetometry (P. Das \textit{et al.}, Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{97} 042507, 2010). For the external magnetic field applied along the grain's easy magnetization direction, the magnetization reversal takes place through a series of Barkhausen jumps. Supported by micromagnetic simulations, the ground state of the grain was found to correspond to a flux closure configuration with a single cross-tie domain wall. Here, we report an analysis of the Barkhausen jumps, which were observed in the hyste…
Magnetization switching by spin-orbit torque (SOT) via spin Hall effect represents as a competitive alternative to that by spin-transfer torque (STT) used for magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM), as it does not require high-density current to go through the tunnel junction. For perpendicular MRAM, however, SOT driven switching of the free layer requires an external in-plane field, which poses limitation for viability in practical applications. Here we demonstrate field-free magnetization switching of a perpendicular magnet by utilizing an Iridium (Ir) layer. The Ir layer not only prov…

We report on the controlled switching of domain wall (DW) magnetization in aligned stripe domain structures, stabilized in [Co (0.44 nm)/Pt (0.7 nm)]$_X$ ($X = 48$, 100, 150) multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The switching process, induced by an external magnetic field, is monitored by measuring the evolution of the in-plane magnetization. % We show that the remanent in-plane magnetization originates from the polarization of the Bloch-type DWs. With micromagnetic simulations, we reveal that the reversal of the DW polarization is the result of the emergence and collapse of hor…
