n this paper I discuss what we can learn about quarkonium dissociation from lattice-potential based models. Special emphasis is given to results obtained in agreement by different models, and to the relevance of lattice QCD for potential models. Future directions are also discussed.
We present a calculation of the leading order QCD fragmentation functions for gluons to split into spin-triplet D-wave quarkonia. We apply them to evaluate the gluon fragmentation contributions to inclusive ^3D_J quarkonium production at large transverse momentum processes like the Tevatron and find that the D-wave quarkonia, especially the charmonium 2^{--} state, could be observed through color-octet mechanism with present luminosity. Since there are distinctively large gaps between the contributions of two different (i.e, color-singlet and color-octet) quarkonium production mechanisms, our …
This is an elementary introduction to the recent significant theoretical progress in the field of heavy quarkonium physics. We show how renormalon cancellation takes place in the heavy quarkonium system, such as bottomonium and (remnant of) toponium resonance, and how this notion is useful in extracting the MSbar masses of the bottom and top quarks.
In this paper, we calculate twist-2 light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) of the S-wave and P-wave quarkonia (namely $^1S_0$ state $η_{Q}$, $^3S_1$ state $J/ψ(Υ)$, $^1P_1$ state $h_{Q}$ and $^3P_J$ states $χ_{QJ}$ with $J=0,1,2$ and $Q=c,b$) to the next-leading order of the strong coupling $α_s$ and leading order of the velocity expansion $v$ in the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). We apply these LCDAs to some single quarkonium exclusive productions at large center-of-mass energy, such as $γ^*\to η_Qγ, χ_{QJ}γ~(J=0,1,2)$, $Z\to η_Qγ, χ_{QJ}γ~(J=0,1,2), J/ψ(Υ)γ, h_Qγ$ and $h\to J/ψγ$, by adop…
Production cross sections of heavy quarkonia are considered as useful tools to study various aspects of QCD. We have entered a new era of quarkonium production phenomenology, with the help of new measurements from the LHC giving access to more varieties of observables, and recent theoretical developments that provided us a better understanding of the short-distance process in which quarkonia are produced. With a more concrete understanding of perturbative corrections and a prolific collection of data, a satisfactory description of the quarkonium production mechanism might now be within reach. …
Heavy quarkonia, Bc-meson, and CS-meson masses are calculated within the framework of the N-dimensional radial Schrodinger equation. The Cornell potential is extended by including the harmonic oscillator potential. The energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions are calculated in the N-dimensional space using the Nikiforov-Uvarov (NV) method. The energy eigenvalues are obtained in the three-dimensional space. The mass of spectra of charmonium, bottomonium, and mesons are calculated. The effect of dimensionality number on the mass of quarkonium is investigated. A comparison with oth…
Recent lattice calculations showed that the quarkonia will survive beyond the phase transition temperature, and will dissolve at different temperatures depending on the type of the quarkonium. In this work, we calculate the thermal width of the quarkonium at finite temperature before it dissolves into open heavy quarks. The input of the calculation are the parton quarkonium dissociation cross section to NLO in QCD, the quarkonium wave function in a temperature-dependent potential from lattice QCD, and a thermal distribution of partons with thermal masses. We find that for the J/psi, the total …
The Schroedinger equation for the charmonium and bottomonium states at finite temperature is solved by employing an effective temperature dependent potential given by a linear combination of the color singlet free and internal energies obtained on the lattice from the Polyakov loop correlation functions. The melting temperatures and other properties of the quarkonium states are evaluated. The consistency of the potential model approach with the available lattice data on the quarkonium temporal correlators and spectral functions is explored.
We investigate the polarization properties of vector quarkonia in lepton anti-lepton annihilation with special attention to effects due to intermediate Z bosons.
We study infrared QCD effects in radiative quarkonia decays. We examine the endpoint region z -> 1 of the photon spectrum. We point out a cancellation mechanism for the corrections in $α_s^n \ln^{m} (1-z)$, $m \leq 2 n$, in the short-distance coefficient for the color-singlet Fock state in the quarkonium. The cancellation is due to the coherence of the color radiation, and applies even though logarithmic contributions are present in the jet distributions associated with the decay. We comment on the implications of our results for the modeling of hadronization in the endpoint region and for the…
We compute the energy loss of heavy quarkonia in high temperature QCD plasmas and investigate the energy loss effects on quarkonium suppression. Based on the effective vertex derived from the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude for quarkonium, the collisional and radiative energy loss are determined by quarkonium-gluon elastic scattering and the associated gluon-bremsstrahlung, respectively. In the energy regime $E<m_Υ^2/T$ the collisional energy loss is dominant over the radiative one, and the total energy loss increases with the plasma temperature and the initial energy of quarkonium. Our numerical ana…
We report on a recent investigation on heavy quarkonium hybrids that goes beyond the usual Born-Oppenheimer approximation by including not only the mixing between nearby hybrid states but also the mixing with quarkonium states. We use a systematic effective field theory framework based on NRQCD together with lattice QCD inputs. Short and long distance constraints from weak coupling pNRQCD and the QCD effective string theory are also employed. We calculate the quarkonium and hybrid spectrum for charmonium and bottomonium, and estimate a number of decay widths. Most of the isospin zero $XYZ$ res…
We consider the inclusive radiative decays quarkonium -> gamma + hadrons and examine the effects of soft QCD radiation on the photon energy spectrum near the endpoint.
We report the recent progress in the studies of D-wave heavy quarkonia production from gluon fragmentation at the Tevatron and in Z^0 decays, and the D-wave charmonia production in B decays. We show that the color-octet contributions are of crucial importance to the production of D-wave quarkonia. Signals, as strong as that for J/ψand ψ^\prime, should be seen for the D-wave charmonium in the processes. These will provide a test of the color-octet production mechanism.
Heavy quarkonium production is a powerful implement to study the strong interaction dynamics and QCD theory. Fragmentation is the dominant production mechanism for heavy quarkonia with large transverse momentum. With the large heavy quark mass, the relative motion of the heavy quark pair inside a heavy quarkonium is effectively nonrelativistic and it is also well-known that their fragmentation functions can be calculated in the perturbative QCD framework. Here, we analytically calculate the process-independent fragmentation functions for a gluon to split into the spin-singlet and -triplet $S$-…
Uncertainties in the next-to-leading-order calculations of heavy-quark ($Q$) production are investigated. Predictions for total cross sections, single-inclusive distributions of heavy quarks and heavy flavoured hadrons, as well as for $Q\bar{Q}$ correlations, are compared with charm and bottom data. The description of heavy-quarkonium production requires a separation of the short-distance scale of $Q\bar{Q}$ production, which is set by the heavy-quark mass from the longer-distance scales associated with the bound-state formation. Various factorization approaches are compared, in particular wit…
recently proposed strictly phenomenological static quark-antiquark potential belonging to the generality $V(r)=-Ar^{-α}+κr^β+V_{0}$ is tested with heavy quarkonia in the context of the shifted large N-expansion method. This nonrelativistic potential model fits the spin-averaged mass spectra of the $c\bar{c},$ $b\bar{b}$ and $c% \bar{b}$ quarkonia within a few ${\rm MeV}$ and also the five experimentally known leptonic decay widths of the $c\bar{c}$ and $b% \bar{b}$ vector states. Further, we compute the hyperfine splittings of the bottomonium spectrum as well as the fine and hyperfine splittin…
The N-dimensional radial Schrödinger equation has been solved using the analytical exact iteration method (AEIM), in which the Cornell potential is generalized to finite temperature and chemical potential. The energy eigenvalues have been calculated in the N-dimensional space for any state (n, l). The present results have been applied for studying quarkonium properties such as charmonium and bottomonium masses. The binding energies and the mass spectra of heavy quarkonia are studied in the N-dimensional space. The dissociation temperatures for different states of heavy quarkonia are calculated…
A theoretical explanation of the observed splittings among the P~states of charmonium is given with the use of a nonsingular potential model for heavy quarkonia. We also show that the recently observed mass difference between the center of gravity of the ${}^3P_J$ states and the ${}^1P_1$ state of $c\bar{c}$ does not provide a direct test of the color hyperfine interaction in heavy quarkonia. Our theoretical value for the mass of the ${}^1P_1$ state is in agreement with the experimental result, and its E1 transition width is 341.8~keV. The mass of the $η_c'$ state is predicted to be 3622.3~MeV…
In relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC, a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is created for a short duration of about 10fm/c. Quarkonia (bound states of $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$) are sensitive probes of this phase on length scales comparable to the size of the bound states which are less than 1fm. Observations of quarkonia in these collisions provide us with a lot of information about how the presence of a QGP affects various quarkonium states. This has motivated the development of the theory of heavy quarks and their bound states in a thermal medium, and its application to the phenom…
The decay widths of S-wave quarkonia ($\etc,\etb\to \gg{~~and~~} \J,\U\to\ee$) are calculated on the basis of a quasipotential approach. The nontrivial dependence on relative quark motion of decay amplitude is taken into consideration via quarkonium wave function. It is shown that relativistic corrections may be large (10-50 %) and comparable with QCD corrections.
We formulate a QCD-based effective theory approach to heavy quarkonia-like systems as $\bar{c} c$ and $\bar{b} b$ resonances and $B_c$ states. We apply the method to inclusive decays, working out a few examples in detail.
The problem of the evolution of a heavy quarkonium in a medium can be recast as that of a quantum dissipative system. Within the framework of the master-equation approach to open quantum systems, we consider the real-time dynamics of quarkonia. We find that in a plasma at fixed temperature, the populations of the various quarkonium states evolve together, while their momentum distribution satisfies a Fokker-Planck equation.
The paper contains a systematic, model-independent treatment of electric dipole (E1) transitions in heavy quarkonium. Within the effective field theory framework of potential non-relativistic QCD (pNRQCD), we derive the complete set of relativistic corrections of relative order v^2 both for weakly and strongly-coupled quarkonia. The result supports and complements former results from potential model calculations.
We study quarkonium correlators and spectral functions at zero and finite temperature in QCD with only heavy quarks using potential models combined with perturbative QCD. First, we show that this approach can describe the quarkonium correlation function at zero temperature. Using a class of screened potentials based on lattice calculations of the static quark-antiquark free energy we calculate spectral functions at finite temperature. We find that all quarkonium states, with the exception of the $1S$ bottomonium, dissolve in the deconfined phase at temperatures smaller than $1.5T_c$, in contra…
This talk presents a review of recent results for quarkonium production at the LHC from ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, and ALICE. Production cross sections for $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and $Υ(mS)$, and production ratios for $χ_{c,bJ}$ are found to be in good agreement with predictions from non-relativistic QCD. In contrast, spin-alignment (polarization) measurements seem to disagree with all theoretical predictions. Some other production channels useful for investigating quarkonium hadroproduction mechanisms are also considered.
We update our recent calculation of quarkonium Euclidean correlators at finite temperatures in a potential model by including the effect of zero modes in the lattice spectral functions. These contributions cure most of the previously observed discrepancies with lattice calculations, supporting the use of potential models at finite temperature as an important tool to complement lattice studies.
Formation time of heavy quarkonia in a homogeneous magnetic field is analyzed by using a phenomenological ansatz of the vector current correlator. Because the existence of a magnetic field mixes vector quarkonia ($J/ψ$, $ψ^\prime$) and their pseudoscalar partners ($η_c$, $η_c^\prime$), the properties of the quarkonia can be modified through such a spin mixing. This means that the formation time of quarkonia is also changed by the magnetic field. We show the formation time of vector quarkonia is delayed by an idealized constant magnetic field, where the formation time of the excited state becom…
Emphasizing the possibility of moderate suppression of heavy quarkonium states, we invite some attention towards the issue of real time evolution of quarkonia during the cooling phase of quark gluon plasma(QGP). In this context, we have used time dependent perturbation theory to show that $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, $J/Ψ$ can further be dissociated in the medium at a temperature below their dissociation thresholds even though they survive the Debye screening. We have presented and compared the dissociation probabilities and dissociation rates of these states in real and complex valued potential in this …
Rapid thermalization in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions leads to fast changing potential between a heavy quark and antiquark from zero temperature potential to the finite temperature one. Time dependent perturbation theory can then be used to calculate the survival probability of the initial quarkonium state. In view of very short time scales of thermalization at RHIC and LHC energies, we calculate the survival probability of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ using sudden approximation. Our results show that quarkonium decay may be significant even when temperature of QGP remains low enough so that the co…
We demonstrate that spin flipping transitions occur between various quarkonium spin states due to transient magnetic field produced in non central heavy ion collisions (HICs). The inhomogeneous nature of the magnetic field results in \textit{non adiabatic evolution} of (spin)states of quarkonia moving inside the transient magnetic environment. Our calculations explicitly show that the consideration of azimuthal inhomogeneity gives rise to dynamical mixing between different spin states owing to Majorana spin flipping. Notably, this effect of non-adiabaticity is novel and distinct from previousl…
In the fractional nonrelativistic potential model, the decomposition of heavy quarkonium in a hot magnetized medium is investigated. The analytical solution of the fractional radial Schrodinger equation for the hot-magnetized interaction potential is displayed by using the conformable fractional Nikiforov-Uvarov method. Analytical expressions for the energy eigenvalues and the radial wave function are obtained for arbitrary quantum numbers. Next, we study the charmonium and bottmonium binding energies for different magnetic field values in the thermal medium. The effect of the fractional param…
We investigate the Mott effect for heavy quarkonia due to Debye screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks and antiquarks. The influence of residual color correlation is investigated by coupling the light quark sector to a temporal gauge field driven by the Polyakov loop potential. This leads to an increase of the Mott dissociation temperatures for quarkonia states which stabilizes in particular the excited states, but has marginal effect on the ground states.
We present a perturbative QCD factorization formalism for the production of heavy quarkonia of large transverse momentum $p_T$ at collider energies, which includes both the leading power (LP) and next-to-leading power (NLP) contributions to the cross section in the $m_Q^2/p_T^2$ expansion for heavy quark mass $m_Q$. We estimate fragmentation functions in the non-relativistic QCD formalism, and reproduce the bulk of the large enhancement found in explicit NLO calculations in the color singlet model. Heavy quarkonia produced from NLP channels prefer longitudinal polarization.
In order to fulfill Low's theorem requirements, a new lowest order basis for bound state decay computations is proposed, in which the binding energy is treated non-perturbatively. The properties of the method are sketched by reviewing standard positronium decay processes. Then, it is shown how applying the method to quarkonia sheds new light on some longstanding puzzles.
In present work we discuss the production of heavy quarkonia and diquarks in $pp$-interactions. The aim is to take into account the production of bound states of quarks originating from independent parton scatterings. This production is regulated by constraints on the invariant mass of constituents. Such an approach leads to larger value of the diquark production cross section than traditional consideration in single parton scattering. This production mechanism of doubly heavy baryons can sooner be verified by modern experiments (e.g. LHCb). We also discuss related contributions to double and …
Recent advances in lattice and continuum QCD have given us new insights into quarkonium physics. These set of lectures are intend for the uninitiated. We first give a physical picture of quarkonium and describe the hybrids states established in lattice QCD. Then we give an unorthodox presentation of Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) including a novel method for the application of spin-symmetries. Finally we describe the prototypical application of NRQCD: cancellation of infrared divergences in decays of P-wave quarkonia.
Dynamics of hadro-quarkonium system is formulated, based on the channel coupling of a light hadron (h) and heavy quarkonium (Q\bar{Q}) to intermediate open-flavor heavy-light mesons (Q\bar{q}, \bar{Q}q). The resulting effective interaction is defined by overlap integrals of meson wavefunctions and (hq\bar q) coupling, where h is pi, rho, omega, phi, without fitting parameters. Equations for hadro-quarkonium amplitudes and resonance positions are written explicitly, and numerically calculated for the special case of pi Upsilon(nS) (n=1,2,3). It is also shown, that the recently observed by Belle…
We study the radiative (E1 and M1) decays of P-wave quarkonia in a strong magnetic field based on the Lagrangian of potential nonrelativistic QCD. To investigate their properties, we implement a polarized wave function basis justified in the Paschen-Back limit. In a magnetic field stronger than the spin-orbit coupling, the wave functions of the P-wave quarkonia are drastically deformed by the Hadronic Paschen-Back effect. Such deformation leads to the anisotropy of the direction of decays from the P-wave quarkonia. The analytic formulas for the radiative decay widths in the nonrelativistic lim…
We report on the creation of a database for quarkonium and open heavy-flavour production in hadronic collisions. This database, made as a collaboration between HepData and the ReteQuarkonii network of the integrating activity I3HP2 of the 7th Framework Programme, provides an up-to-date review on quarkonia and open heavy-flavour existing data. We first present the physics motivation for this project, which is connected to the aim of the ReteQuarkonii network, studies of open heavy-flavour hadrons and quarkonia in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Then we give a general overview of the database and de…
We report here on recent progress in the determination of S-wave and P-wave heavy-quarkonium states at finite temperature. Our results are based on the combination of effective field theories with numerical lattice QCD simulations. These non-perturbative tools allow us to compute the heavy-quarkonium in-medium spectral functions, from which we in turn determine the melting temperatures of individual states and estimate phenomenologically relevant observables, such as the $ψ^\prime$ to J/$ψ$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions.
We compute derived quantities for various values of the model parameter of the Cornell potential model for the S-wave heavy quarkonia with radial quantum numbers n=1, 2, and 3. Our results can be used to determine leading and relative-order-v^2 nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics matrix elements for S-wave charmonia and bottomonia such as psi(2S), eta_c(2S), and Upsilon(nS) for n=1, 2, and 3. These matrix elements will be essential ingredients for resumming relativistic corrections to processes involving those S-wave heavy quarkonium states.
The production of heavy quarkonia is a powerful tool to test our understanding of strong interaction dynamics. It is well-known that the dominant production mechanism for heavy quarkonia with large transverse momentum is fragmentation. In this work we, analytically, calculate the QCD leading order contribution to the process-independent fragmentation functions (FFs) for a gluon to split into the vector ($J/ψ$) and pseudoscalar ($η_c$) $S$-wave charmonium states. The analyses of this paper differ in which we present, for the first time, an analytical form of the $g\rightarrow J/ψ$ FF using a di…
Heavy quarkonium production in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions (UPC) is described within the QCD dipole formalism. Realistic quarkonium wave functions in the $Q\bar Q$ rest frame are calculated by solving the Schrödinger equation with a subsequent Lorentz boost to high energy. We rely on several realistic $Q\bar Q$ potentials, which allow to describe well the quarkonium masses and decay widths, as well as data on diffractive electroproduction of quarkonia on protons. Nuclear effects are calculated with the phenomenological dipole cross sections fitted to DIS data. The higher twist quark sh…
We investigate the real-time evolution of quarkonium bound states in a quark-gluon plasma in one dimension using an improved QCD based stochastic potential model. This model describes the quarkonium dynamics in terms of a Schrödinger equation with an in-medium potential and two noise terms encoding the residual interactions between the heavy quarks and the medium. The probabilities of bound states in a static medium and in a boost-invariantly expanding quark-gluon plasma are discussed. We draw two conclusions from our results: One is that the outcome of the stochastic potential model is qualit…
Recently a lot of progress has been made in deriving the heavy quark potential within a QCD medium. In this article we have considered heavy quarkonium in a hot quark gluon plasma phase. The heavy-quark potential has been modeled properly for short as well as long distances. The potential at long distances is modeled as a QCD string which is screened at the same scale as the Coloumb field. We have numerically solved the 1+1-dimensional Schrodinger equation for this potential and obtained the eigen wavefunction and binding energy for the $1S$ and $2S$ states of charmonium and bottomonium. Furth…
After an introduction motivating the study of quarkonium production, we review the recent developments in the phenomenology of quarkonium production in inclusive scatterings of hadrons and leptons. We naturally address data and predictions relevant for the LHC, the Tevatron, RHIC, HERA, LEP, B factories and EIC. An up-to-date discussion of the contributions from feed downs within the charmonium and bottomonium families as well as from b hadrons to charmonia is also provided. This contextualises an exhaustive overview of new observables such as the associated production along with a Standard Mo…
Using the variational method and supersymmetric quantum mechanic we calculate in a approximate way eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and wave functions at origin of Cornell potential. We compare results with numerical solutions for heavy quarkonia $c\bar{c}$, $b\bar{b}$ y $b\bar{c}$.
The problem of quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions presents a set of unique theoretical challenges -- from the relevant production mechanism of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ to the relative significance of distinct cold and hot nuclear matter effects in the observed attenuation of quarkonia. Inthese proceedings we summarize recent work on the generalization of non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) to include off-shell gluon (Glauber/Coulomb) interactions in strongly interacting matter. This new effective theory provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the in-mediu…
