We investigate the real-time evolution of quarkonium bound states in a quark-gluon plasma in one dimension using an improved QCD based stochastic potential model. This model describes the quarkonium dynamics in terms of a Schrödinger equation with an in-medium potential and two noise terms encoding the residual interactions between the heavy quarks and the medium. The probabilities of bound states in a static medium and in a boost-invariantly expanding quark-gluon plasma are discussed. We draw two conclusions from our results: One is that the outcome of the stochastic potential model is qualitatively consistent with the experimental data in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The other is that the noise plays an important role in order to describe quarkonium dynamics in medium, in particular it causes decoherence of the quarkonium wave function. The effectiveness of decoherence is controlled by a new length scale $l_{\rm corr}$. It represents the noise correlation length and its effect has not been included in existing phenomenological studies.
We study different processes responsible for the modification of quarkonia yields in the medium produced in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The quarkonia and heavy flavour cross sections are estimated using the measurements in pp collisions at LHC energies and shadowing corrections are obtained using the EPS09 parametrizations. A kinetic model is used which incorporates quarkonia suppression inside the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), suppression due to hadronic comovers, and regeneration from recombination of heavy quark pairs. The quarkonia dissociation cross section due to gluon col…
The present article is the follow up work of, Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 94}, 094006 (2016), where we have extended the study of quarkonia dissociation in (momentum) anisotropic hot QCD medium. As evident by the experimentally observed collective flow at RHIC and LHC, the momentum anisotropy is present at almost all the stages after the collision and therefore, it is important to include its effects in the analysis. Employing the in-medium (corrected) potential while considering the anisotropy (both oblate and prolate cases) in the medium, the thermal widths and the binding energies of the heavy quar…
Emphasizing the possibility of moderate suppression of heavy quarkonium states, we invite some attention towards the issue of real time evolution of quarkonia during the cooling phase of quark gluon plasma(QGP). In this context, we have used time dependent perturbation theory to show that $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, $J/Ψ$ can further be dissociated in the medium at a temperature below their dissociation thresholds even though they survive the Debye screening. We have presented and compared the dissociation probabilities and dissociation rates of these states in real and complex valued potential in this …
The dissociation of heavy quarkonia in the constrained space is calculated at leading order compared with that in infinitely large medium. To deal with the summation of the discrete spectrum, a modified Euler-Maclaurin formula is developed as our numerical algorithm. We find that with the constraint in space, the dissociation of quarkonia at early time becomes negligible.
We have studied the quasi-free dissociation of quarkonia through a complex potential which is obtained by correcting both the perturbative and nonperturbative terms of the $Q \bar Q$ potential at T=0 through the dielectric function in real-time formalism. The presence of confining nonperturbative term even above the transition temperature makes the real-part of the potential more stronger and thus makes the quarkonia more bound and also enhances the (magnitude) imaginary-part which, in turn contributes more to the thermal width, compared to the medium-contribution of the perturbative term alon…
We have investigated the effects of strong magnetic field on the properties of quarkonia immersed in a thermal medium of quarks and gluons and studied its quasi-free dissociation due to the Landau-damping. Thermalizing the Schwinger propagator in the lowest Landau levels for quarks and the Feynman propagator for gluons in real-time formalism, we have calculated the resummed retarded and symmetric propagators, which in turn give the real and imaginary components of dielectric permittivity, respectively. The magnetic field affects the large-distance interaction more than the short-distance inter…
We investigate the Mott effect for heavy quarkonia due to Debye screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks and antiquarks. The influence of residual color correlation is investigated by coupling the light quark sector to a temporal gauge field driven by the Polyakov loop potential. This leads to an increase of the Mott dissociation temperatures for quarkonia states which stabilizes in particular the excited states, but has marginal effect on the ground states. The temperature dependence of binding energies suggests that the dissciation of the charmonium (bottomonium)…
Using the chromo-electric dipole coupling Hamiltonian from QCD multipole expansion, we derive the dissociation cross sections of heavy quarkonia by thermal gluons at next-to-leading order (NLO, also known as inelastic parton scattering dissociation) in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in the framework of second order quantum mechanical perturbation theory. While suffering divergence (infrared and soft-collinear divergences) in vacuum, the cross sections thus derived become finite in the QGP as rendered by the finite thermal gluon masses. In contrast to the leading order (LO, also known as gluo-dis…
We calculate the quarkonium dissociation rate in the P and CP-odd domains (bubbles) that were possibly created in heavy-ion collisions. In the presence of the magnetic field produced by the valence quarks of colliding ions, parity-odd domains generate electric field. Quarkonium dissociation is the result of quantum tunneling of quark or antiquark through the potential barrier in this electric field. The strength of the electric field in the quarkonium comoving frame depends on the quarkonium velocity with respect to the background magnetic field. We investigate momentum, electric field strengt…
We calculate the yields of quarkonia in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC as a function of their transverse momentum. Based upon non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, our results include both color-singlet and color-octet contributions and feed-down effects from excited states. In reactions with ultra-relativistic nuclei, we focus on the consistent implementation of dynamically calculated nuclear matter effects, such as coherent power corrections, cold nuclear matter energy loss, and the Cronin effect in the initial state. In the final state, we consider radiative energy loss for the…
We compute the energy loss of heavy quarkonia in high temperature QCD plasmas and investigate the energy loss effects on quarkonium suppression. Based on the effective vertex derived from the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude for quarkonium, the collisional and radiative energy loss are determined by quarkonium-gluon elastic scattering and the associated gluon-bremsstrahlung, respectively. In the energy regime $E<m_Υ^2/T$ the collisional energy loss is dominant over the radiative one, and the total energy loss increases with the plasma temperature and the initial energy of quarkonium. Our numerical ana…
We summarize results of recent studies of heavy quarkonia correlators and spectral functions at finite temperatures from lattice QCD and systematic T-matrix studies using QCD motivated finite-temperature potentials. We argue that heavy quarkonia dissociation shall occur in the temperature range $1.2 \le T_d/T_c \le 1.5$ by the interplay of both screening and absorption in the strongly correlated plasma medium. We discuss these effects on the quantum mechanical evolution of quarkonia states within a time-dependent harmonic oscillator model with complex oscillator strength and compare the result…
For weakly bound quarkonia, we rederive the next-to-leading order cross sections of quarkonium dissociation by partons that include the hard thermal loop (HTL) resummation. Our results calculated with an effective vertex from the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude reduce to those obtained by potential nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD) in the relevant kinematical limit, and they can be used in a wide temperature range applicable to heavy quark systems in heavy ion collisions. Based on the lattice computation of the temperature-dependent binding energy, our numerical analysis on $Υ(1S)$ indicates that at high …
In high-energy nuclear collisions, heavy quark potential at finite temperature controls the quarkonium production. Including the relaxation of the medium induced by the relative velocity between quarkonia and the deconfined expanding matter, the Debye screening is reduced and the quarkonium dissociation takes place at a higher temperature. As a consequence of the velocity dependent dissociation temperature, the quarkonium suppression at high transverse momentum is significantly weakened in high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC.
Using an effective Hamiltonian derived from the QCD multipole expansion, we calculate the cross sections of gluo-dissociation of heavy quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma, by including both the chromo-electric dipole ($E_1$) as well as the chromo-magnetic dipole ($M_1$) transition mechanisms. While the former allows to reproduce the results from operator-product-expansion calculations in the Coulomb approximation, the latter as a novel contribution is shown to be significant at low energies close to the threshold. Using thus obtained cross sections, we further carry out a full calculation of t…
We aim to describe the process of dissociation and recombination of quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma. Therefore we developed a model which allows to observe the time evolution of a system with various numbers of charm-anticharm-quark pairs at different temperatures. The motion of the heavy quarks is realized within a Langevin approach. We use a simplified version of a formalism developed by Blaizot et al. in which an Abelian plasma is considered where the heavy quarks interact over a Coulomb like potential. We have demonstrated, that the system reaches the expected thermal distribution in t…

The spectroscopic properties of heavy quarkonia are substantially different in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that is created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions as compared to the vacuum situation that can be tested in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. In this article, a series of recent works about the dissociation of the Y(nS) and chi_b(nP) states in the hot QGP is summarized. Quarkonia dissociation occurs due to (1) screening of the real quark-antiquark potential, (2) collisional damping through the imaginary part of the potential, and (3) gluon-induced dissociation. In addit…
Decoherence dynamics of quarkonia is studied in the high-temperature deconfined phase of SU($N_c$) gauge theories. In particular, we analyze the symmetry properties of SU($N_c$) stochastic potential model and find a novel "event-by-event" symmetry for $N_c=2$ case, similar to the $G$-parity of hadronic systems. This novel symmetry constrains the relation between diagonal and off-diagonal components of quarkonium density matrix, leaving the latter to be finite at late times. We also present one-dimensional numerical simulation of the model, which indicates the usefulness of the complex potentia…
In this work we have explored the imaginary part of the Heavy Quark (HQ) potential and subsequently the dissociation of heavy quarkonia at finite temperature and magnetic field. With respect to earlier investigations on this topic, present work contain three new ingredients. First one is considering all Landau level summation, for which present work can be applicable in entire magnetic field domain - from weak to strong. Second one is the general structure of the gauge boson propagator in a hot magnetized medium, which is used here in heavy quark potential problem first time. Third one is a ri…

In the present work, we have studied heavy quarkonia potential in hot and magnetized quark gluon plasma. Inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) effect is incorporated within the system through the magnetic field modified Debye mass by modifying the effective quark masses. We have obtained the real and imaginary part of the heavy quark potential in this new scenario. After the evaluation of the binding energy and the decay width we comment about the dissociation temperatures of the heavy quarkonia in presence of magnetic field.
The in-medium physics of heavy quarkonium is an ideal proving ground for our ability to connect knowledge about the fundamental laws of physics to phenomenological predictions. One possible route to take is to attempt a description of heavy quark bound states at finite temperature through a Schroedinger equation with an instantaneous potential. Here we review recent progress in devising a comprehensive approach to define such a potential from first principles QCD and extract its, in general complex, values from non-perturbative lattice QCD simulations. Based on the theory of open quantum syste…
Quarkonium suppression is one of the most investigated probes of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. In this thesis we extend the well-established and successful zero temperature framework of Non-Relativistic (NR) Effective Field Theories (EFTs) (NRQCD, pNRQCD) for the study of heavy quarkonia (production, spectroscopy, decays, ...) to finite temperatures. This is achieved by integrating out in sequence the scales that characterize a NR bound state and those that are typical of a thermal medium, in the possible hierarchies that are relevant for quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma. Wit…
We propose an open quantum systems approach to the physics of heavy quarkonia in a thermal medium, based on stochastic quantum evolution. This description emphasizes the importance of collisions with the environment and focuses on the concept of spatial decoherence of the heavy quarkonium wave function. It is shown how to determine the parameters of the dynamical evolution, i.e. the real potential and the noise strength, from a comparison with quantities to be obtained from lattice QCD. Furthermore the imaginary part of the lattice QCD heavy quark potential is found to be naturally related to …
Recently a lot of progress has been made in deriving the heavy quark potential within a QCD medium. In this article we have considered heavy quarkonium in a hot quark gluon plasma phase. The heavy-quark potential has been modeled properly for short as well as long distances. The potential at long distances is modeled as a QCD string which is screened at the same scale as the Coloumb field. We have numerically solved the 1+1-dimensional Schrodinger equation for this potential and obtained the eigen wavefunction and binding energy for the $1S$ and $2S$ states of charmonium and bottomonium. Furth…
Following a recent work on the effective description of the equations of state for hot QCD obtained from a Hard thermal loop expression for the gluon self-energy, in terms of the quasi-gluons and quasi- quark/anti-quarks with respective effective fugacities, the dissociation process of heavy quarkonium in hot QCD medium has been investigated. This has been done by investigating the medium modification to a heavy quark potential. The medium modified potential has a quite different form (a long range Coulomb tail in addition to the usual Yukawa term) in contrast to the usual picture of Debye scr…
The relativistic correction of the AdS/CFT implied heavy quark potential is examined within the framework of the potential model. For the typical range of the coupling strength appropriate to heavy-ion collisions, we find the correction is significant in size and lowers the dissociation temperature of quarkonia.
We develop a framework of coupled transport equations for open heavy flavor and quarkonium states, in order to describe their transport inside the quark-gluon plasma. Our framework is capable of studying simultaneously both open and hidden heavy flavor observables in heavy-ion collision experiments and can account for both, uncorrelated and correlated recombination. Our recombination implementation depends on real-time open heavy quark and antiquark distributions. We carry out consistency tests to show how the interplay among open heavy flavor transport, quarkonium dissociation and recombinati…
Using the gauge-gravity duality we have obtained the potential between a heavy quark and an antiquark pair, which is moving perpendicular to the direction of orientation, in a strongly-coupled supersymmetric hot plasma. For the purpose we work on a metric in the gravity side, {\em viz.} OKS-BH geometry, whose dual in the gauge theory side runs with the energy and hence proves to be a better background for thermal QCD. The potential obtained has confining term both in vacuum and in medium, in addition to the Coulomb term alone, usually reported in the literature. As the velocity of the pair is …
We calculate the quarkonium formation time in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from the space-time correlator of heavy quark vector currents in a hydrodynamics background with the initial nonequilibrium stage expanding only in the longitudinal direction. Using in-medium quarkonia properties determined with the heavy quark potential taken to be the free energy from lattice calculations and the fact that quarkonia can only be formed below their dissociation temperatures due to color screening, we find that $Υ$(1S), $Υ$(2S), $Υ$(3S), $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime$ are formed, respectively, at 1.2, 6.6, 8.…
By coupling the Boltzmann transport equations of both quarkonium and open heavy quarks, we investigate their dynamical evolution inside the quark-gluon plasma and study quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions. The Boltzmann transport equation of quarkonium is derived from the open quantum system formalism and effective field theory of QCD by assuming quarkonium interacts weakly with the plasma. The dissociation and recombination terms in the Boltzmann equation are calculated in potential nonrelativistic QCD. It is shown that the combination of quarkonium dissociation, recombination, open…

We develop a set of coupled Boltzmann equations to describe the dynamical evolution of heavy quarks and quarkonia inside the quark-gluon plasma. The quarkonium dissociation and recombination terms are calculated from pNRQCD. Their interplay drives the system to a detailed balance. The heavy quark energy loss term is necessary for the system to reach kinematic thermalization. By coupling the transport equations with initial particles' momenta generated by PYTHIA and hydrodynamic medium evolutions, we can describe the $R_{AA}$ of $Υ$ family at both RHIC and LHC energies. The transverse momentum …
We perform a complete next-to-leading order calculation of the non-Abelian electric field correlator in a SU($N_c$) plasma, which encodes properties of the plasma relevant for heavy particle bound state formation and dissociation, and is different from the correlator for the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. The calculation is carried out in the real-time formalism of thermal field theory and includes both vacuum and finite temperature contributions. By working in the $R_ξ$ gauge, we explicitly show the results are gauge independent, infrared and collinear safe. The renormalization group equa…
Motivated by recent applications of the open quantum system formalism to understand quarkonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma, we develop a set of coupled Boltzmann equations for open heavy quark-antiquark pairs and quarkonia. Our approach keeps track of the correlation between the heavy quark-antiquark pair from quarkonium dissociation and thus is able to account for both uncorrelated and correlated recombination. By solving the coupled Boltzmann equations for current heavy ion collision experiments, we find correlated recombination is crucial to describe the data of bottomonia nuclear m…
We address the evolution of heavy-quarkonium states in an expanding quark-gluon plasma by implementing effective field theory techniques in the framework of open quantum systems. In this setting we compute the nuclear modification factors for quarkonia that are $S$-wave Coulombic bound states in a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. The calculation is performed at an accuracy that is leading-order in the heavy-quark density expansion and next-to-leading order in the multipole expansion. The quarkonium density-matrix evolution equations can be written in the Lindblad form, and, hence, they acc…
