Low temperature thermal conductivity in a d-wave superconductor with coexisting charge order: Effect of self-consistent disorder and vertex corrections
Given the experimental evidence of charge order in the underdoped cuprate superconductors, we consider the effect of coexisting charge order on low-temperature thermal transport in a d-wave superconductor. Using a phenomenological Hamiltonian that describes a two-dimensional system in the presence of a Q=(π,0) charge density wave and d-wave superconducting order, and including the effects of weak impurity scattering, we compute the self-energy of the quasiparticles within the self-consistent Born approximation, and calculate the zero-temperature thermal conductivity using linear response formalism. We find that vertex corrections within the ladder approximation do not significantly modify the bare-bubble result that was previously calculated. However, self-consistent treatment of the disorder does modify the charge-order-dependence of the thermal conductivity tensor, in that the magnitude of charge order required for the system to become effectively gapped is renormalized, generally to a smaller value.
In light of recent experimental evidence of density wave order in the cuprates, we consider a phenomenological model of a d-wave superconductor with coexisting charge, spin or pair density wave order of various form and wave vector. We study the evolution of the nodal structure of the quasiparticle energy spectrum as a function of the amplitude of the coexisting order and perform diagrammatic linear response calculations of the low-temperature (universal-limit) thermal conductivity. The work described herein expands upon our past studies, which focused on a particular unit-cell-doubling charge…
We study the phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of a system of coexisting itinerant electrons and local pairs (LP), in the presence of diagonal disorder. The model considered takes into account both the charge exchange couplings, responsible for superconducting orderings, and the density-density interactions, which can stabilize charge ordered states in the system. Depending on the strength of the random on-site potential, the interactions and the particle concentrations the model is found to exhibit several various phases, including the homogeneous ones: superconducting (SC), charge …
We study thermal transport in a two-dimensional system with coexisting $s$- or $d$-wave Superconducting (SC) and Spin Density Wave (SDW) orders. We analyse the nature of coexistence phase in a tight-binding square lattice with $\mathbf{Q}=(π,π)$ SDW ordering. The electronic thermal conductivity is computed within the framework of the Boltzmann kinetic theory, using Born approximation for the impurity scattering collision integral. We describe the influence of the Fermi surface (FS) topology, the competition between the SC and SDW order parameters, the presence or absence of zero energy excitat…
A d-wave superconducting phase with coexisting intra-unit-cell orbital current order has the remarkable property that it supports finite size Fermi pockets of Bougoliubov quasiparticles. Experimentally detectable consequences of this include a residual $T$-linear term in the specific heat in the absence of disorder and residual features in the thermal and microwave conductivity in the low disorder limit.
We study the influence of diagonal disorder (random site energy) of local pair (LP) site energies on the superconducting properties of a system of coexisting local pairs and itinerant electrons described by the (hard-core) boson-fermion model. Our analysis shows that the properties of such a model with s-wave pairing can be very strongly affected by the diagonal disorder in LP subsystem (the randomness of the LP site energies). This is in contrast with the conventional s-wave BCS superconductors, which according to the Anderson's theorem are rather insensitive to the diagonal disorder (i.e. to…
In light of the evidence that charge order coexists with d-wave superconductivity in the underdoped cuprate superconductors, we investigate the manner in which such charge order will influence the quasiparticle excitations of the system and, in particular, the low-temperature transport of heat by those quasiparticles. We consider a d-wave superconductor in which the superconductivity coexists with charge density wave order of wave vector (π/a,0). While the nodes of the quasiparticle energy spectrum survive the onset of charge order, there exists a critical value of the charge density wave orde…
Using a real-space renormalization group (RSRG) technique, we compute the microwave conductivity of a d-wave superconductor disordered by extended impurities. To do this, we invoke a semiclassical approximation which naturally accesses the Andreev bound states localized near each impurity. Tunneling corrections (which are captured using the RSRG) lead to a delocalization of these quasiparticles and an associated contribution to the microwave conductivity.
The electric conductivities in glass phases of three-dimensional (3D) granular superconductors in magnetic fields are examined based on a quantum disordered Josephson-junction array. A correct inclusion of the Ohmic dissipative dynamics leads to glass phases with divergent dc conductivity. In contrast, with no dissipative term, a metallic response in a glass phase is obtained irrespective of the range of correlation of quenched disorder, i.e., even in the so-called Bose-glass phase with experimentally vanishing resistivity.
Stripe phases are observed experimentally in several copper-based high-Tc superconductors near 1/8 hole doping. However, the specific characteristics may vary depending on the degree of dopant disorder and the presence or absence of a low- temperature tetragonal phase. On the basis of a Hartree-Fock decoupling scheme for the t-J model we discuss the diverse behavior of stripe phases. In particular the effect of inhomogeneities is investigated in two distinctly different parameter regimes which are characterized by the strength of the interaction. We observe that small concen- trations of impur…
We study the effect of superconducting fluctuations on the longitudinal and the transverse (Hall) conductivity in homogeneously disordered films. Our calculation is based on the Usadel equation in the real-time formulation. We adjust this approach to derive analytic expressions for the fluctuation corrections in the entire metallic part of the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, including the effects of both classical and quantum fluctuations. This method allows us to obtain fluctuation corrections in a compact and effective way, establishing a direct connection between phenomenological …
We present mean-field calculations for the in-plane optical conductivity, the superfluid density, and the electronic Raman susceptibility in quasi two-dimensional systems possessing a ground state with two competing order parameters: d-wave density wave (dDW) and d-wave superconductor (dSC). In the coexisting dDW+dSC phase we calculate the frequency dependence of these correlation functions in the presence of impurity scattering in the unitary limit, relevant to zinc-doped cuprate superconductors.
Recent scanning tunnelling spectroscopy measurements [Y. Koksaka et al., Nature 454, 1072 (2008)] have shown that dispersing quasiparticle interference peaks in Fourier transformed conductance maps disappear as the bias voltage exceeds a certain threshold corresponding to the coincidence of the contour of constant quasiparticle energy with the antiferromagnetic zone boundary. Here we argue that this is caused by quasistatic short-range coexisting order present in the d-wave superconducting phase, and that the most likely origin of this order is disorder-induced incommensurate antiferromagnetis…
We have introduced defects into clean samples of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(SCN)$_2$ in order to determine their effect on the temperature dependence of the conductivity and the critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$. We find a violation of Matthiessen's rule that can be explained by a model of the conductivity involving a defect-assisted interlayer channel which acts in parallel with the band-like conductivity. We observe an unusual dependence of $T_{\rm c}$ on residual resistivity which is not consistent with the generalised Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory for an order parameter with…
We measured the temperature dependence of the in-plane polarized reflectivity spectra of twin-free Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals with different Ca-concentrations (x=0,0.11 and 0.16) from optimally doped to heavily overdoped region. Low energy optical conductivity spectra showed a Drude-like residual conductivity at temperatures far below the superconducting transition temperature, which indicates the presence of unpaired-normal carriers in the superconducting state. Comparing the spectra at a fixed Ca-content or at a fixed doping level, we have revealed that the ca…
Our measurements of the low frequency ac conductivity in strongly disordered two-dimensional films near the magnetic field-tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition show a sudden drop in the phase stiffness of superconducting order with either increased temperature or magnetic field. Surprisingly, for two different material systems, the abrupt drop in the superfluid density in a magnetic field has the same universal value as that expected for a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in zero magnetic field. The characteristic temperature at which phase stiffness is suddenly lost can be t…
We study temperature $T$ and frequency $ω$ dependence of the in-plane fluctuation conductivity of a disordered superconducting film above the critical temperature. Our calculation is based on the nonlinear sigma model within the Keldysh technique. The fluctuation contributions of different physical origin are found and analyzed in a wide frequency range. In the low-frequency range, $ω\ll T$, we reproduce the known leading terms and find additional subleading ones in the Aslamazov-Larkin and the Maki-Thompson contributions to the ac conductivity. We also calculate the density of states ac corre…
The ab-plane reflectivity of (Y{1-x}Prx)Ba2Cu3O7 thin films was measured in the 30-30000 cm-1 range for samples with x = 0 (Tc = 90 K), x = 0.4 (Tc = 35 K) and x = 0.5 (Tc = 19 K) as a function of temperature in the normal state. The effective charge density obtained from the integrated spectral weight decreases with increasing x. The variation is consistent with the higher dc resistivity for x = 0.4, but is one order of magnitude smaller than what would be expected for x = 0.5. In the latter sample, the conductivity is dominated at all temperatures by a large localization peak. Its magnitude …
We consider the far-infrared and the microwave conductivities of a two-band superconductor with non-magnetic impurities. The strong coupling expressions for the frequency and temperature dependent conductivity of a two-band superconductor are developed assuming isotropic bands and interactions. Our numerical results obtained using realistic interaction parameters for MgB$_{2}$ are compared with experiments on this compound. We find that the available experimental results for the far-infrared conductivity of MgB$_{2}$ are consistent with multi-band superconductivity in the presence of a suffici…
We present here, the effect of microstructure on the magnetic, electrical and thermal properties of (V$_{0.60}$Ti$_{0.40}$)-Gd alloys. The gadolinium is found to be immiscible and precipitates with a size $<$1.2~$μ$m in the (V$_{0.60}$Ti$_{0.40}$)-Gd alloys. These precipitates enhance the grain boundary density. The (V$_{0.60}$Ti$_{0.40}$)-Gd alloys become ferromagnetic below $T_{mc}$ = 295~K with an increase in the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{sc}$). Though the disorder increases with increasing Gd content, the electronic thermal conductivity ($κ_{e} (H = 0)$) reduces by at mos…
The fluctuation conductivity $σ_{\rm s}$ in bulk superconductors with non s-wave pairing and with nonmagnetic disorder of strength $D$ is studied at low $T$ and within the Gaussian approximation. It is shown by assuming a quasi two-dimensional (2D) electronic state that, only if the gap function $d_μ({\p})$ is, as in a 2D p-wave pairing state, linear in the in-plane (relative) momentum ${\p}_\perp$, the in-plane fluctuation conductivity on the line $D=D_c$ is weakly divergent in low $T$ limit. The present result may be useful in clarifying the true gap function of spin-triplet ${\rm Sr_2RuO_4}…
We point out that unidirectional bond-centered charge-density-wave states in cuprates involve electronic order in both s- and d-wave channels, with non-local Coulomb repulsion suppressing the s-wave component. The resulting bond-charge-density wave, coexisting with superconductivity, is compatible with recent photoemission and tunneling data and as well as neutron-scattering measurements, once long-range order is destroyed by slow fluctuations or glassy disorder. In particular, the real-space structure of d-wave stripes is consistent with the scanning-tunneling-microscopy measurements on both …
The low-temperature thermal conductivity κ_0/T of d-wave superconductors is generally thought to attain a "universal" value independent of disorder at sufficiently low temperatures, providing an important measure of the magnitude of the gap slope near its nodes. We discuss situations in which this inference can break down because of competing order, and quasiparticle localization. Specifically, we study an inhomogeneous BCS mean field model with electronic correlations included via a Hartree approximation for the Hubbard interaction, and show that the suppression of κ_0/T by localization effec…
Topological superconductors have attracted tremendous excitement as they are predicted to host Majorana zero modes that can be utilized for topological quantum computing. Candidate topological superconductor Sn1-xInxTe thin films (0<x<0.3) grown by molecular beam epitaxy and strained in the (111) plane are shown to host three coexisting quantum effects: localization, antilocalization and superconducting fluctuations above the critical temperature Tc. An analysis of the normal state magnetoresistance reveals these effects. Weak localization is consistently observed in superconducting samples, i…
We have studied the longitudinal thermal conductivity of the surface of a three-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor with random disorder. Majorana fermions on the surface of topological superconductors have a response to the gravitational field, which is realized as a thermal response to the temperature gradient inside of the material. Because of the presence of both time-reversal symmetry and particle-hole symmetry, disorder on the surface emerges in the Hamiltonian only as spatial deformations of the pair potential. In terms of the gravitational field, the disorder…
Based on the framework of Kubo formulism, we develop the minimally entangled typical thermal state algorithm to study the temperature and time dependence of current-current correlation function in one-dimensional spinless fermion model, taking into account both the electron-electron (e-e) intersite interaction and the dynamic disorder induced by classical phonons. Without e-e interaction, the numerical results, showing an exponential decay of the time dependent correlation, could be precisely compared with that from the analytical derivation, namely, from the generalized Langevin equation. Mor…
We consider microscopically low-temperature transport in weakly disordered arrays of Josephson junctions in the Coulomb blockade regime. We demonstrate that at sufficiently low temperatures the main contribution to the dc conductivity comes from the motion of single-Cooper-pair excitations, scattered by irregularities in the array. Being proportional to the concentration of the excitations, the conductivity is exponentially small in temperature with the activation energy close to the charging energy of a Cooper pair on a superconductive island. Applying a diagrammatic approach to treat the dis…
A quantum phase transition is a dramatic event marked by large spatial and temporal fluctuations, where one phase of matter with its ground state and tower of excitations reorganizes into a completely different phase. We provide new insight into the disorder-driven superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in two dimensions, a problem of great theoretical and experimental interest, with the dynamical conductivity σ(ω) and the bosonic (pair) spectral function P(ω) calculated from quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We identify characteristic energy scales in the superconducting and insulating phas…
