We present 0.2" resolution near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of H-alpha emission from six star forming galaxies at z~1.6 (look-back time of ~9.6 Gyr). These observations were obtained with OSIRIS using the Keck Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system. All sources have a compact spatial extent of ~1", with an average half light radius of r=2.9 kpc and average dereddened star formation rate of 22 Msolar per year. Based on H-alpha kinematics we find that these six galaxies are dynamically distinguishable, and we classify them as either merger or disk candidate systems. We find three merger systems (HDF-BX1287, HDF-BX1315, and Q1623-BX491) with varying geometries and dynamical properties. Three galaxies (HDF-BMZ1299, Q2343-BX344, and Q2343-BM145) are well-fit by an inclined-disk model with low velocity residuals (20 to 46 km/sec). An average plateau velocity of v_p=185 km/sec is achieved within 1.0 kpc. The majority of observed velocity dispersions (~88 km/sec) can be explained by the residual seeing halo, and are not intrinsic to our sources. However, one merger and one disk candidate have high velocity dispersions (> 200 km/sec) that cannot be solely explained by beam smearing. For two disk candidates, we detect [NII] emission and are able to map the [NII]/H-alpha ratio on kiloparsec scales. In both cases, [NII] emission is more concentrated than H-alpha emission (< 0.2"), and peak ratios are best explained by the presence of an AGN. These are among the weakest known AGN at high redshift, however their emission is strong enough to impact high redshift metallicity studies that use nebular ratios. All disk candidates have likely completed only a few orbital periods, and if left unperturbed are excellent candidates to become present-day spiral galaxies.
We present moderate-resolution Keck spectra of nine candidate globular clusters in the possible merger-remnant elliptical galaxy NGC 3610. Eight of the objects appear to be bona fide globular clusters of NGC 3610. We find that two of the clusters belong to an old metal-poor population, five to an old metal-rich population, and only one to an intermediate-age metal-rich population. The estimated age of the intermediate-age cluster is 1-5 Gyr, which is in agreement with earlier estimates of the merger age, and suggests that this cluster was formed during the merger. However, the presence of five…
We discuss images of the central ~10 kpc (in projection) of the galaxy merger NGC 6240 at H and K' bands, taken with the NIRC2 narrow camera on Keck II using natural guide star adaptive optics. We detect 28 star clusters in the NIRC2 images, of which only 7 can be seen in the similar-spatial-resolution, archival WFPC2 Planetary Camera data at either B or I bands. Combining the NIRC2 narrow camera pointings with wider NICMOS NIC2 images taken with the F110W, F160W, and F222M filters, we identify a total of 32 clusters that are detected in at least one of these 5 infrared (lambda > 1 micron) ban…
Low-resolution UV-to-visual spectra of two candidate globular clusters in the merger remnant NGC 3921 are presented. These two clusters of apparent magnitude V = 22.2 (Mv = -12.5) lie at projected distances of ~5 kpc from the center and move with halo-type radial velocities relative to the local galaxy background. Their spectra show strong Balmer absorption lines indicative of main-sequence turnoffs dominated by A-type stars. Comparisons with model-cluster spectra computed by Bruzual & Charlot and others yield cluster ages in the range of 200-530 Myr, and metallicities about solar to within a …
The Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey (CATS) aims to combine deep HST images in the optical with deep Keck adaptive optics (AO) data in the near-infrared (NIR) to study distant galaxies, AGN, and supernovae. We recently achieved an important new milestone by securing the first Keck laser guide star AO image of faint galaxies. Six galaxies with redshifts ranging from 0.3-1.0 were targeted in one pointing in the GOODS-S field. Two are Chandra Deep Field South sources, XID-56 and XID-536, with complex morphologies suggestive of recent merger activity. Substructures seen in the NIR AO ima…
We present results of near infrared imaging of the disk-galaxy-merger NGC 6240 using adaptive optics on the Keck II Telescope and reprocessed archival data from NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. Both the North and South nuclei of NGC 6240 are clearly elongated, with considerable sub-structure within each nucleus. In K' band there are at least two point-sources within the North nucleus; we tentatively identify the south-western point-source within the North nucleus as the position of one of the two AGNs. Within the South nucleus, the northern sub-nucleus is more highly reddened. Based upon …
The presence of two globular cluster subpopulations in early-type galaxies is now the norm rather than the exception. Here we present two more examples for which the host galaxy appears to have undergone a recent merger. Using multi-colour Keck imaging of NGC 1052 and NGC 7332 we find evidence for a bimodal globular cluster colour distribution in both galaxies, with roughly equal numbers of blue and red globular clusters. The blue ones have similar colours to those in the Milky Way halo and are thus probably very old and metal-poor. If the red GC subpopulations are at least solar metallicity, …
We present seeing-limited and adaptive optics (AO) images of the z = 1.786 radio galaxy 3C294 in the H and K' infrared bands obtained at Keck Observatory. The infrared emission of 3C294 is dominated by two distinct components separated by ~1" (9 kpc). The eastern knot contains an unresolved core that contributes ~4% of the K'-band light; we identify this core with the active nucleus. The western component is about 2.5 times brighter. The most plausible interpretation of the near-infrared morphology is an ongoing merger event, with the active nucleus located in the less massive of the two galax…
We present a study of 81 I selected, spectroscopically-confirmed members of the X-ray cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83. Redshifts and spectral types were determined from Keck spectroscopy. Morphologies and accurate colors were determined from a large mosaic of HST WFPC2 images in F606W and F814W. Early-type galaxies constitute only 44% of this galaxy population. Thirty-nine percent are spiral galaxies, and 17% are mergers. The early-type galaxies follow a tight and well-defined color-magnitude relation, with the exception of a few outliers. The observed scatter is 0.029 +- 0.005 magnitudes in restf…
Using adaptive optics on the W.M. Keck II telescope we imaged Titan several times during 1999 to 2001 in narrowband near-infrared filters selected to probe Titan's stratosphere and upper troposphere. We observed a bright feature around the south pole, possibly a collar of haze or clouds. Further, we find that solar phase angle explains most of the observed east-west brightness asymmetry of Titan's atmosphere, although the data do not preclude the presence of a `morning fog' effect at small solar phase angle.
Adaptive optics, large primary mirrors, and careful selection of target stars are the keys to ground-based imaging of extrasolar planets. Our near-IR survey is capable of identifying exoplanets of 1-10 M${_J}$ within 100 AU of young (t$<$60 Myr), nearby (d$<$60 pc) stars. For very young and proximate targets such as GJ 803 (12 Myr, 10 pc) we are able to detect exoplanets with parameters approaching those of planets our solar system (1 M${_J}$ at 19 AU, 2 M${_J}$ at 9 AU; 5 M${_J}$ at 5 AU). We have thus far imaged over 100 stars with Keck AO. Here we report on our progress, discuss specific ob…
We have employed laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) on the Keck II telescope to obtain near-infrared (NIR) images in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) deep galaxy survey field. This is a continuation of our Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey (CATS) program of targeting 0.5<z<1 galaxies where existing images with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are already in hand. Our AO field has already been imaged by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the Near Infared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph (NICMOS). Our AO images at 2.2 microns (K') are comparable in depth to those from H…
We report observations obtained with the Keck adaptive optics facility of the nearby (d=9.8 pc) binary Gl~569. The system was known to be composed of a cool primary (dM2) and a very cool secondary (dM8.5) with a separation of 5" (49 Astronomical Units). We have found that Gl~569~B is itself double with a separation of only 0".101$\pm$0".002 (1 Astronomical Unit). This detection demonstrates the superb spatial resolution that can be achieved with adaptive optics at Keck. The difference in brightness between Gl~569~B and the companion is $\sim$0.5 magnitudes in the J, H and K' bands. Thus, both …
We report the results of VLT and Keck adaptive optics surveys of known members of the Eta Chamaeleontis, MBM 12, and TW Hydrae (TWA) associations to search for close companions. The multiplicity statistics of Eta Cha, MBM 12, and TWA are quite high compared with other clusters and associations, although our errors are large due to small number statistics. We have resolved S18 in MBM 12 and RECX 9 in Eta Cha into triples for the first time. The tight binary TWA 5Aab in the TWA offers the prospect of measuring the dynamical masses of both components as well as an independent distance to the syst…
The large collecting area of 4+ metre class telescopes allows atronomers to observe bright objects on faster timescales than previously possible. In order to exploit this capability, we designed a novel read-out mode for use on the 10-m Keck-II telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. This took the form of a continuous read-out mode, enabling us to obtain a target spectrum between 3500 and 8500 Å, with a dispersion of ~2.5 Å/pix, every *70 milliseconds*. I present results from 5 nights of observations of Interacting Binaries, using this novel data acquisition system in July 1998. During the run we obta…
We have witnessed a dramatic increase over the last five years in results on distant galaxies, in large part because of the high resolution imaging capability of HST, and the multiobject spectroscopic capability of the Keck telescopes. Our program to obtain wide-field, multi-color WFPC2 mosaics with HST of intermediate redshift clusters, and spectroscopic membership and high S/N spectroscopy with LRIS on Keck, has provided new insights into the nature of elliptical and S0 galaxies in the cluster environment over a wide range of densities. In particular, most ellipticals, and a significant frac…
We report on the first observation of cosmologically distant field galaxies with an high order Adaptive Optics (AO) system on an 8-10 meter class telescope. Two galaxies were observed at 1.6 microns at an angular resolution as high as 50 milliarcsec using the AO system on the Keck-II telescope. Radial profiles of both objects are consistent with those of local spiral galaxies and are decomposed into a classic exponential disk and a central bulge. A star-forming cluster or companion galaxy as well as a compact core are detected in one of the galaxies at a redshift of 0.37+/-0.05. We discuss pos…
Adaptive optics (AO) on 8-10 m telescopes is an enormously powerful tool for studying young nearby stars. It is especially useful for searching for companions. Using AO on the 10-m W.M. Keck II telescope we have measured the position of the brown dwarf companion to TWA5 and resolved the primary into an 0.055 arcsecond double. Over the next several years follow-up astrometry should permit an accurate determination of the masses of these young stars. We have also re-observed the candidate extrasolar planet TWA6B, but measurements of its motion relative to TWA6A are inconclusive. We are carrying …
We present Keck diffraction limited H-band photometry of a z~1.3 Type Ia supernova (SN) candidate, first identified in a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) search for SNe in massive high redshift galaxy clusters. The adaptive optics (AO) data were obtained with the Laser Guide Star facility during four observing runs from September to November 2005. In the analysis of data from the observing run nearest to maximum SN brightness, the SN was found to have a magnitude H=23.9 +/- 0.14 (Vega). We present the H-band (approximately rest-frame R) light curve and provide a detailed analysis of the AO photome…
We report on observations of comet 9P/Tempel 1 carried out before, during, and after the NASA DEEP IMPACT event (UT July 4), with the optical spectrometers UVES and HIRES mounted on the telescopes Kueyen of the ESO VLT (Chile) and Keck 1 on Mauna Kea (Hawaii), respectively. A total observing time of about 60 hours, distributed over 15 nights around the impact date, allowed us (i) to find a periodic variation of 1.709 +/- 0.009 day in the CN and NH flux, explained by the presence of two major active regions; (ii) to derive a lifetime > ~ 5 x 10^4 s for the parent of the CN radical from a simple…
The Egg Nebula has been regarded as the archetype of bipolar proto-planetary nebulae, yet we lack a coherent model that can explain the morphology and kinematics of the nebular and dusty components observed at high-spatial and spectral resolution. Here, we report on two sets of observations obtained with the Keck Adaptive Optics Laser Guide Star: H to M-band NIRC2 imaging, and narrow bandpath K-band OSIRIS 3-D imaging-spectroscopy (through the H2 2.121micron emission line). While the central star or engine remains un-detected at all bands, we clearly resolve the dusty components in the central…
The kinematics of neutral gas and warm ionized gas have been mapped in one-dimension across ultraluminous starburst galaxies using interstellar absorption and emission lines, in Keck II ESI spectra. Blue-shifted absorption is found along more of the slit than anticipated, exceeding scales of 15 kpc across several systems. The large velocity gradient measured across some of these outflows is inconsistent with a flow diverging from the central starburst -- angular momentum conservation reduces the rotational velocity of an outflow as it expands. More widespread star formation, likely triggered b…
As part of our multiwavelength campaign of observations of GX 339-4 in 1996 we present our Keck spectroscopy performed on May 12 UT. At this time, neither the ASM on the RXTE nor BATSE on the CGRO detected the source. The optical emission was still dominated by the accretion disk with V approximately 17 mag. The dominant emission line is H alpha, and for the first time we are able to resolve a double peaked profile. The peak separation Delta v = 370 +/- 40 km/s. Double peaked H alpha emission lines have been seen in the quiescent optical counterparts of many black hole X-ray novae. However, we…
Spitzer MIPS images in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey have revealed a class of extremely dust obscured galaxy (DOG) at z~2. The DOGs are defined by very red optical to mid-IR (observed-frame) colors, R - [24 um] > 14 mag, i.e. f_v (24 um) / f_v (R) > 1000. They are Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies with L_8-1000 um > 10^12 -10^14 L_sun, but typically have very faint optical (rest-frame UV) fluxes. We imaged three DOGs with the Keck Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGSAO) system, obtaining ~0.06'' resolution in the K'-band. One system was dominated by a point source, while …
Keck spectroscopy of 5 proto-globular cluster candidates in NGC 1275 has been combined with HST WFPC2 photometry to explore the nature and origin of these objects and discriminate between merger and cooling flow scenarios for globular cluster formation. The objects we have studied are not HII regions, but rather star clusters, yet their integrated spectral properties do not resemble young or intermediate age Magellanic Cloud clusters or Milky Way open clusters. The clusters' Balmer absorption appears to be too strong to be consistent with any of the standard Bruzual & Charlot evolutionary mode…
We present faint galaxy counts from deep $VRI$ images obtained with the Keck Telescope. These images reach $R\sim27$ in median seeing FWHM $\sim 0.5$--0.6 arcsec and we detect a integrated galaxy number density of $7\times 10^{5}$ degree$^{-2}$, equivalent to $3\times 10^{10}$ galaxies in the observable Universe. In addition we present median galaxy colors as a function of magnitude; bluing trends are visible in all colors to $R\sim 24.5$. Fainter than $R\sim24.5$, however, the typical \VR\ color becomes redder again, \VI\ remains constant, and \RI\ becomes yet bluer. These trends are consiste…
A significant population of nearby stars have strong far-infrared excesses, now known to be due to circumstellar dust in regions analogous to the Kuiper Belt of our solar system, though orders of magnitude more dense. Recent sub-mm and mm imaging of these systems resolves the circumstellar dust and reveals complex structures, often in the form of rings with azimuthal non-axisymmetric variations. This structure might well be due to the presence of embedded brown dwarfs or planets. We have carried out deep adaptive optics imaging of two nearby stars with such asymmetric dust: Epsilon Eridani and…
We report results based on 35 new spectroscopic redshifts obtained with the Keck Telescope for field galaxies that also have photometry and morphology from survey images taken by the refurbished HST. A sample of 24 redshifts for galaxies fainter than I = 22 has a median redshift of z ~ 0.81. This result is inconsistent with the lower median redshift of z ~ 0.6 predicted by the ``maximal merger models'' of Carlberg (1996), which otherwise fit existing data. The data match an extrapolation of the CFRS, as well as predictions of certain mild luminosity-evolution models. Nearly half of the redshif…
We have performed simultaneous X-ray and optical spectroscopic observations of the Low Mass X-ray Binary Cygnus X-2. We have used a new data system attached to the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph instrument on Keck II to obtain spectra with a mean time resolution of 72.075 milliseconds, simultaneous with pointed X-ray observations using the PCA onboard XTE. In this paper, we have analysed the variability in both wavebands on timescales of 16 seconds. During our observations Cygnus X-2 covered all three branches of the Z-curve, allowing us to study how the changes in X-ray spectral state af…
We investigate the nature of the faintest radio sources detected in 3 VLA surveys, to faint limits 8 microJy at 8.5 GHz. Using the Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph in BRI and the Near Infra Red Camera in K, we image 51 radio sources, and identify probable optical counterparts for 50. With LRIS spectroscopy, we successfully acquire new redshifts for 17 sources, and 9 have redshifts from previous data. Of this sample of 26, about 60 per cent are disk galaxies with high radio to optical ratios, indicating ongoing or very recent starbursts, at redshifts z=0-1. Others are normal, non-intera…
We report high quality near-infrared spectroscopy of 12 ultra-luminous infrared galaxy mergers (ULIRGs). Our new VLT and Keck data provide ~0.5" resolution, stellar and gas kinematics of these galaxies most of which are compact systems in the last merger stages. We confirm that ULIRG mergers are 'ellipticals-in-formation'. Random motions dominate their stellar dynamics, but significant rotation is common. Gas and stellar dynamics are decoupled in most systems. ULIRGs fall on or near the fundamental plane of hot stellar systems, and especially on its less evolution sensitive, r(eff)-sigma proje…
We have employed natural guide star adaptive optics (AO) on the Keck II telescope to obtain near-infrared (H and K') images of three field galaxies, each of redshift greater than 0.5. These are among the highest-redshift non-active disk galaxies to be imaged with AO. Each of the galaxies was chosen because it had been observed previously with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) by others. Our AO images in the near infrared (NIR) closely match both the depth and high spatial resolution of those optical data. Combining the archival V and I data with our new H a…
Using adaptive optics on the Keck II 10-meter telescope on Mauna Kea, we have surveyed 24 of the nearest young stars known in search of close companions. Our sample includes members of the MBM 12 and TW Hydrae young associations and the classical T Tauri binary UY Aurigae in the Taurus star-forming region. We present relative photometry and accurate astrometry for 10 close multiple systems. The multiplicity frequency in the TW Hydrae and MBM 12 groups are high in comparison to other young regions, though the significance of this result is low because of the small number statistics. We resolve …
Spatially resolved velocity profiles are presented for nine faint field galaxies in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 1, based on moderate-resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Keck 10 m telescope. These data were augmented with high-resolution HST images from WFPC2, which provided V and I photometry, galaxy type, orientation, and inclination. The effects of seeing, slit width, and slit misalignment with respect to galaxy major axis were modeled along with inclination for each source, in order to derive a maximum circular velocity from the observed rotation curve. The lowest redshift galaxy, th…
We present results from a morphological study of the distant X-ray cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83. We have obtained a large, two color HST WFPC2 mosaic of this cluster, and measured redshifts of 186 galaxies in the MS1054-03 field with the 10m Keck telescope. Of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster galaxies observerd with HST, 13 are merger systems. Most of these mergers will likely evolve into luminous elliptical galaxies, and some may evolve into S0 galaxies. If the galaxy population in MS1054-03 is typical for its redshift up to 50% of ellipticals may have formed in mergers at z<1. The merge…
To study the relevance of mergers for the fueling of QSOs, we are currently conducting an HST imaging campaign of a sample of QSO host galaxies classified as ellipticals in the literature. Here, we present results from a study of the first five QSO host galaxies imaged with HST/ACS. For the majority of objects, strong signs of interactions such as tidal tails, shells, and other fine structure are revealed. We estimate the nature and age of the merger by comparing the images with numerical simulations. The merger ages range between a few hundred Myr up to a Gyr. These timescales are comparable …
(Abridged) We present multi-epoch imaging of the T5.0+T5.5 binary 2MASS J1534-2952AB obtained with the Keck laser guide star adaptive optics system. Combined with an extensive (re-)analysis of archival HST imaging, we find a total mass of 0.056+/-0.003 Msun (59+/-3 Mjup). This is the first field binary for which both components are directly confirmed to be substellar. This is also the coolest and lowest mass binary with a dynamical mass determination to date. Using evolutionary models, we derive an age of 0.78+/-0.09 Gyr for the system, and we find Teff = 1028+/-17 K and 978+/-17 K and masses …
V838 Mon erupted at the beginning of 2002 becoming an extremely luminous star. Among various scenarios proposed to explain the nature of the outburst the most promising is a stellar merger event. In this paper we investigate the observational properties of the star and its surroundings in the post outburst phase. We have obtained a high resolution optical spectrum of V838 Mon in October 2005 using the Keck I telescope. We have identified numerous atomic features and molecular bands present in the spectrum and provided an atlas of those features. In order to improve the spectrum interpretation w…
We report on an investigation of the SBS 1520+530 gravitational lens system and its environment using archival HST imaging, Keck spectroscopic data, and Keck adaptive-optics imaging. The AO imaging has allowed us to fix the lens galaxy properties with a high degree of precision when performing the lens modeling, and the data indicate that the lens has an elliptical morphology and perhaps a disk. The new spectroscopic data suggest that previous determinations of the lens redshift may be incorrect, and we report an updated, though inconclusive, value z_lens = 0.761. We have also spectroscopicall…
With an optical R-band magnitude of 15.2, the recently discovered z=3.911 BAL quasar APM 08279+5255 is an exceptionally bright high redshift source. Its brightness has allowed us to acquire a high signal-to-noise ratio (~100), high resolution (~6 km/s) spectrum using the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the 10-m Keck I telescope. Given the quality of the data, these observations provide an unprecedented view of associated and intervening absorption systems. Here we announce the availability of this spectrum to the general astronomical community and present a brief analysis of some of its main fea…
We have resolved the newly discovered T dwarf SDSS J1534+1615 into a 0.11'' binary using the Keck sodium laser guide star adaptive optics system. With an integrated-light spectral type of T3.5, this binary provides a new benchmark for studying the distinctive J-band brightening previously noted among early and mid-T dwarfs, using two brown dwarfs with different spectral types but having a common metallicity and age and very similar surface gravities. We estimate spectral types of T1.5+/-0.5 and T5.5+/-0.5 for the two components based on their near-IR colors, consistent with modeling the integr…
Infrared OH lines at 1.5 - 1.7 um in the H band were obtained with the NIRSPEC high-resolution spectrograph at the 10m Keck Telescope for a sample of seven metal-poor stars. Detailed analyses have been carried out, based on optical high-resolution data obtained with the FEROS spectrograph at ESO. Stellar parameters were derived by adopting infrared flux method effective temperatures, trigonometric and/or evolutionary gravities and metallicities from FeII lines. We obtain that the sample stars with metallicities [Fe/H] < -2.2 show a mean oxygen abundance [O/Fe] ~ 0.54, for a solar oxygen abunda…
We present diffraction limited spectroscopic observations of an infrared flare associated with the radio source SgrA*. These are the first results obtained with OSIRIS, the new facility infrared imaging spectrograph for the Keck Observatory operated with the laser guide star adaptive optics system. After subtracting the spectrum of precursor emission at the location of Sgr A*, we find the flare has a spectral index of -2.6 +- 0.9. If we do not subtract the precursor light, then our spectral index is consistent with earlier observations by Ghez et al. (2005). All observations published so far s…
We present observations of the T Tauri stars BP Tau, DG Tau, DI Tau, GM Aur, LkCa 15, RW Aur and V830 Tau, using long baseline infrared interferometry at K band (2.2 microns) from the Keck Interferometer. The target sources have a range of mass accretion rates and excess near-infrared emission. The interferometer is most sensitive to extended emission on characteristic size scales of 1 to 5 millarcseconds. All sources show evidence for resolved K band emission on these scales, although a few of the sources are marginally consistent with being unresolved. We calculate the infrared excess based …
We present the first measurement of the proper motion of the young, compact Arches cluster near the Galactic center from near-infrared adaptive optics (AO) data taken with the recently commissioned laser-guide star (LGS) at the Keck 10-m telescope. The excellent astrometric accuracy achieved with LGS-AO provides the basis for a detailed comparison with VLT/NAOS-CONICA data taken 4.3 years earlier. Over the 4.3 year baseline, a spatial displacement of the Arches cluster with respect to the field population is measured to be 24.0 +/- 2.2 mas, corresponding to a proper motion of 5.6 +/- 0.5 mas/y…
We combine high-resolution images in four optical/infra-red bands, obtained with the laser guide star adaptive optics system on the Keck Telescope and with the Hubble Space Telescope, to study the gravitational lens system SDSSJ0737+3216 (lens redshift 0.3223, source redshift 0.5812). We show that (under favorable observing conditions) ground-based images are comparable to those obtained with HST in terms of precision in the determination of the parameters of both the lens mass distribution and the background source. We also quantify the systematic errors associated with both the incomplete kn…
We present results from a pilot HST ACS deep imaging study in broad-band V of five low-redshift QSO host galaxies classified in the literature as ellipticals. The aim of our study is to determine whether these early-type hosts formed at high redshift and have since evolved passively, or whether they have undergone relatively recent mergers that may be related to the triggering of the nuclear activity. We perform two-dimensional modeling of the light distributions to analyze the host galaxies' morphology. We find that, while each host galaxy is reasonably well fitted by a de Vaucouleurs profile…
We present results from an adaptive optics survey for substellar and stellar companions to Sun-like stars. The survey targeted 266 F5-K5 stars in the 3Myr to 3Gyr age range with distances of 10-190pc. Results from the survey include the discovery of two brown dwarf companions (HD49197B and HD203030B), 24 new stellar binaries, and a triple system. We infer that the frequency of 0.012-0.072Msun brown dwarfs in 28-1590AU orbits around young solar analogs is 3.2% (+3.1%,-2.7%; 2sigma limits). The result demonstrates that the deficiency of substellar companions at wide orbital separations from Sun-…
We used the Hubble Space Telescope to take a wide field, multicolor image of the high redshift cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83. The Keck telescope was used to take 200 redshifts in the field. We have a total of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members with deep WFPC2 imaging. A surprisingly large number of these cluster members are mergers: 13 out of 77 galaxies are classified as merger remnants, or mergers in progress. Most of these are red, and massive. Their restframe B luminosities are amongst the brightest in the cluster: we find that 5 out of the brightest 16 are mergers. No such brigh…
Using the Long Wavelength Spectrometer on Keck I, we have imaged the gravitationally lensed radio quiet quasi-stellar object (QSO) 2237+0305 at 8.9 and 11.7 microns for the first time. The mid-infrared flux ratios are inconsistent with the optical flux ratios, but agree with the radio flux ratios and with some published gravitational lens models. These flux ratios indicate that the infrared emission is not affected by microlensing, which rules out the synchrotron emission model. The infrared emission is likely produced by hot dust extended on a length scale of more than 0.03 parsecs. The spect…
Optical spectra are presented for a sample of T dwarfs, obtained using the Keck 10m Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. Dominant features are discussed, including possible temperature diagnostics.
(Abridged) High-redshift ultra luminous infrared galaxies contribute the bulk of the cosmic IR background and are the best candidates for very massive galaxies in formation at z>1.5. We present Keck/LRIS optical spectroscopy of 35 z>1.4 luminous IR galaxies in the Spitzer Wide-area Infra-Red Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) northern fields (Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1, ELAIS-N2). The primary targets belong to the ``IR-peak'' class of galaxies, having the 1.6 micron (restframe) stellar feature detected in the IRAC Spitzer channels. The spectral energy distributions of the main targets are thoroughly anal…
We present the discovery of a triplet of emission-line nuclei in the disturbed disk galaxy NGC 3341, based on archival data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and new observations from the Keck Observatory. This galaxy contains two offset nuclei within or projected against its disk, at projected distances of 5.1 and 8.4 kpc from its primary nucleus and at radial velocity separation of less than 200 km/s from the primary. These appear to be either dwarf ellipticals or the bulges of low-mass spirals whose disks have already been stripped off while merging into the primary galaxy. The inner offset…
We present first results of an experiment to combine data from Keck aperture masking and the Infrared-Optical Telescope Array (IOTA) to image the circumstellar environments of evolved stars with ~20 milliarcsecond resolution. The unique combination of excellent Fourier coverage at short baselines and high-quality long-baseline fringe data allows us to determine the location and clumpiness of the inner-most hot dust in the envelopes, and to measure the diameters of the underlying stars themselves. We find evidence for large-scale inhomogeneities in some dust shells and also significant deviatio…
We present early-time Keck spectroscopic observations and late-time Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of GRB 000926. The HST images show a small offset between the optical transient and the compact host galaxy. Combined with the large equivalent widths measured for metallic absorption lines by the Keck Echellette Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) and the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS), this indicates that the GRB exploded near the center of its host. The ESI spectroscopy reveals two absorption systems centered at z = 2.0379 \pm 0.0008 with a velocity separation of 168 km s^{-1}, whi…
We have mapped the 2.6 mm CO (1-0) emission in three optically selected "Toomre Sequence" mergers (NGC 520, NGC 3921, NGC 4676). The molecular gas distribution is well resolved by the observations. For NGC 520 and NGC 4676A, the nuclear gas concentrations form a disk- or a ring-like structure, and the gas kinematics are regular and are consistent with simple rotation. Discrete molecular gas complexes are found along the stellar bar in NGC 4676B, and the gas kinematics is consistent with the disk rotation traced in H alpha. The molecular gas distribution in NGC 3921 is asymmetric about the stel…
We present ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations of the distant cluster A1300 (z = 0.3071) in conjunction with optical data, to investigate the physics of the intra-cluster medium and the dynamical state of the cluster. By means of a multi-resolution wavelet analysis, we find evidence for structures in the X-ray emission of this very luminous (L_{X} ~ 1.7 10^{45} erg/s) in the 0.1--2.4 keV band) and massive (M_{tot} ~ 1.3 x 10^{15} M_{sun} at a radius ~ 2.2 Mpc) cluster. This cluster is significant as we appear to be witnessing the end of a merger which occurred at an early epoch.
We report the results of a high angular resolution near-infrared survey of dusty Wolf-Rayet stars using the Keck-1 Telescope, including new multi-wavelength images of the pinwheel nebulae WR 98a, WR 104, and WR 112. Angular sizes were measured for an additional 8 dusty WR stars using aperture masking interferometry, allowing us to probe characteristics sizes down to ~20 milliarcseconds (~40 AU for typical sources). With angular sizes and specific fluxes, we can directly measure the wavelength-dependent surface brightness and size relations for our sample. We discovered tight correlations of th…
We present a detailed investigation of the X-ray and optical properties of the starburst-merger system Arp299 (NGC 3690, Mrk 171), with an emphasis on its spectacular gaseous nebula. We analyse \rosat and \asca X-ray data and optical spectra and narrow-band images. We suggest that the on-going galaxy collision has tidally-redistributed the ISM of the merging galaxies. The optical emission-line nebula results as this gas is photoionized by radiation that escapes from the starburst, and is shock-heated, accelerated, and pressurized by a `superwind' driven by the collective effect of the starburs…
We present the first results of a new abundance survey of the Milky Way bulge based on Keck/HIRES spectra of 27 K-giants in the Baade's Window ($l = 1$, $b = -4$) field. The spectral data used in this study are of much higher resolution and signal-to-noise than previous optical studies of Galactic bulge stars. The [Fe/H] values of our stars, which range between -1.29 and $+0.51$, were used to recalibrate large low resolution surveys of bulge stars. Our best value for the mean [Fe/H] of the bulge is $-0.10 \pm 0.04$. This mean value is similar to the mean metallicity of the local disk and indic…
