We have employed laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) on the Keck II telescope to obtain near-infrared (NIR) images in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) deep galaxy survey field. This is a continuation of our Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey (CATS) program of targeting 0.5<z<1 galaxies where existing images with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are already in hand. Our AO field has already been imaged by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the Near Infared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph (NICMOS). Our AO images at 2.2 microns (K') are comparable in depth to those from HST, have Strehl ratios up to 0.4, and FWHM resolutions superior to that from NICMOS. By sampling the field with the LGS at different positions, we obtain better quality AO images than with an immovable natural guide star. As examples of the power of adding LGS AO to HST data we study the optical to NIR colors and color gradients of the bulge and disk of two galaxies in the field with z=0.7.
We present an abundance analysis of six main sequence turnoff, subgiant, and giant branch stars toward the Galactic bulge that were observed with Keck/HIRES during microlensing events. This is an early look at the first detailed chemical analysis of main sequence stars in the Galactic bulge. Lensing events allow the effective aperture of Keck to be increased beyond its current dimensions; although, some events still stretched its spectroscopic capabilities. Future large telescopes with high resolution and high throughput spectrometers will allow the study of abundances in distant stellar popul…
We report on detailed abundances of giants in the Galactic bulge, measured with the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the 10-m Keck telescope. We also review other work on the bulge field population and globular clusters using Keck/HIRES. Our new spectra have 3 times the resolution and higher S/N than previous spectra obtained with 4m telescopes. We are able to derive $\log g$ from Fe II lines and excitation temperature from Fe I lines, and do not rely on photometric estimates for these parameters. We confirm that the iron abundance range extends from -1.6 to +0.55 dex. The improved resolution and…
The bulge contains the most chemically evolved old stellar population in the Milky Way. Thanks to microlensing, it is now possible to obtain high resolution echelle spectra of bulge stars near the main sequence turn-off, and study the abundance of elements that are affected by stellar evolution, such as lithium. We have observed with the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I 10m telescope the source star of the MACHO microlensing event 97BLG45 while it was magnified by about 1 magnitude. Here we report the detection of the Li I line at λ6707.8 Åin the echelle spectrum of this star, and measure the …
We present the first results of a new abundance survey of the Milky Way bulge based on Keck/HIRES spectra of 27 K-giants in the Baade's Window ($l = 1$, $b = -4$) field. The spectral data used in this study are of much higher resolution and signal-to-noise than previous optical studies of Galactic bulge stars. The [Fe/H] values of our stars, which range between -1.29 and $+0.51$, were used to recalibrate large low resolution surveys of bulge stars. Our best value for the mean [Fe/H] of the bulge is $-0.10 \pm 0.04$. This mean value is similar to the mean metallicity of the local disk and indic…
We report detailed chemical abundance analysis of 27 RGB stars towards the Galactic bulge in Baade's Window for elements produced by massive stars: O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca and Ti. All of these elements are overabundant in the bulge relative to the disk, especially Mg, indicating that the bulge is enhanced in Type~II supernova ejecta and most likely formed more rapidly than the disk. We attribute a rapid decline of [O/Fe] to metallicity-dependent yields of oxygen in massive stars, perhaps connected to the Wolf-Reyet phenomenon. he explosive nucleosynthesis alphas, Si, Ca and Ti, possess identical…
We report on the first observation of cosmologically distant field galaxies with an high order Adaptive Optics (AO) system on an 8-10 meter class telescope. Two galaxies were observed at 1.6 microns at an angular resolution as high as 50 milliarcsec using the AO system on the Keck-II telescope. Radial profiles of both objects are consistent with those of local spiral galaxies and are decomposed into a classic exponential disk and a central bulge. A star-forming cluster or companion galaxy as well as a compact core are detected in one of the galaxies at a redshift of 0.37+/-0.05. We discuss pos…
The Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey (CATS) aims to combine deep HST images in the optical with deep Keck adaptive optics (AO) data in the near-infrared (NIR) to study distant galaxies, AGN, and supernovae. We recently achieved an important new milestone by securing the first Keck laser guide star AO image of faint galaxies. Six galaxies with redshifts ranging from 0.3-1.0 were targeted in one pointing in the GOODS-S field. Two are Chandra Deep Field South sources, XID-56 and XID-536, with complex morphologies suggestive of recent merger activity. Substructures seen in the NIR AO ima…
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained infrared echelle spectra covering the range 1.5-1.8 micron for the moderately reddened bulge globular clusters NGC 6342 and NGC 6528, finding [Fe/H]= -0.60 and -0.17 dex, respectively. We measure an average alpha-enhancement of approx +0.33 dex in both clusters, consistent with previous measurements on other metal rich bulge clusters, and favoring the scenario of a rapid bulge formation and chemical enrichment. We also measure very low 12C/13C isotopic ratios (approx 5 in NGC 6342 and approx 8 in NGC 6528), suggesting that extra-mixin…
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained echelle spectra covering the range 1.5-1.8um for 2 of the brightest giants in Liller 1 and NGC 6553, old metal rich globular clusters in the Galactic bulge. We use spectrum synthesis for the abundance analysis, and find [Fe/H]=-0.3 +/- 0.2 and [O/H]=+0.3 +/- 0.2 dex. The composition of the clusters is similar to that of field stars in the bulge and is consistent with a sceanrio in which the clusters formed early, with rapid enrichment. We have dificulty achieveing a good fit to the spectrum of NGC 6553 using either the low or the high…
We report on a new study aimed at understanding the diversity and evolutionary properties of distant galactic bulges in the context of well-established trends for pure spheroidal galaxies. Bulges have been isolated for a sample of 137 spiral galaxies in the GOODS fields within the redshift range 0.1 < z < 1.2. Using proven photometric techniques we determine for each galaxy the characteristic parameters (size, surface brightness, profile shape) in the 4 GOODS-ACS imaging bands of both the disk and bulge components. Using the DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck, precision stellar velocity dispersions w…
We present an R=45,000 Keck spectrum of the microlensed Galactic bulge G-dwarf OGLE-2006-BLG-265, which has a high (~60) signal-to-noise ratio despite its short (15 min) exposure time because the source was magnified by A~135. While it is very metal-rich ([Fe/H]=0.56), the higher temperature of this star compared with the luminous red giants usually measured in the bulge gives its spectrum many unblended atomic lines. We measure the abundances of 17 elements, including the first abundances for S and Cu in a bulge star. The [alpha/Fe] ratios are subsolar, while the odd-Z elements are slightly s…
We report the first abundance analysis of 17 M giant stars in the inner Galactic bulge at $(l,b)=(0°,-1°)$, based on $R=25,000$ infrared spectroscopy $(1.5-1.8 ~μ\rm m)$ using NIRSPEC at the Keck telescope. Based on their luminosities and radial velocities, we identify these stars with a stellar population older than 1 Gyr. We find the iron abundance $\rm < [Fe/H] > = -0.22 \pm 0.03$, with a $1σ$ dispersion of $0.14\pm 0.024$. We also find the bulge stars have enhanced [$\rm alpha$/Fe] abundance ratio at the level of +0.3 dex relative to the Solar stars, and low $\rm <^{12}C/^{13}C>\approx 6.5…
Using the SofI imager at ESO/NTT and NIRSPEC spectrograph at KeckII, we have obtained J,K images and echelle spectra covering the range 1.5 - 1.8 micron for the intermediate metallicity Bulge globular clusters NGC6539 and UKS1. We find [Fe/H]=-0.76 and -0.78, respectively, and an average alpha-enhancement of +0.44 dex and +0.31 dex, consistent with previous measurements of metal rich Bulge clusters, and favoring the scenario of rapid chemical enrichment. We also measure very low 12C/13C=4.5 +/-1 isotopic ratios in both clusters, suggesting that extra-mixing mechanisms due to cool bottom proces…
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained infrared echelle spectra covering the 1.5-1.8 micron range for giant stars in the massive bulge globular clusters NGC6440 and NGC6441. We report the first high dispersion abundance for NGC6440, [Fe/H]=-0.56+/-0.02 and we find [Fe/H]=-0.50+/-0.02 for the blue HB cluster NGC6441. We measure an average $α$-enhancement of ~+0.3 dex in both clusters, consistent with previous measurements of other metal rich bulge clusters, and favoring the scenario of a rapid bulge formation and chemical enrichment. We also measure very low 12C/13C isotopi…
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained infrared echelle spectra covering the range $1.5-1.8 μ\rm m$ for the highly reddened bulge globular clusters Terzan 4 and Terzan 5. The clusters are of interest because a blue horizontal branch in Terzan 4 is consistent with very low metallicity, while Terzan 5 has been proposed as possibly the most metal rich known Galactic globular cluster. We report the first detailed abundance analysis for stars in these clusters, and we find [Fe/H]=--1.60 and --0.21 dex for Terzan 4 and Terzan 5, respectively, confirming the presence of a large m…
We report the first abundance analysis of 14 M giant stars in the Galactic bulge, based on R=25,000 infrared spectroscopy (1.5-1.8um) using NIRSPEC at the Keck II telescope. Because some of the bulge M giants reach high luminosities and have very late spectral type, it has been suggested that they are the progeny of only the most metal rich bulge stars, or possibly members of a younger bulge population. We find the iron abundance and composition of the M giants are similar to those of the K giants that have abundances determined from optical high resolution spectroscopy: <[Fe/H]>=-0.190 +/- 0.…
We present two Keck HIRES spectra (R=40,000) of a bulge K3 giant taken on successive nights during the second caustic crossing of the binary microlensing event EROS BLG-2000-5. This caustic crossing served to effectively resolve the surface of the source star: the spectrum from the second night is dominated by the limb, while the spectrum from the first night is comprised of light from a broader range of radii. To demonstrate that the spectra are adequate to resolve the differences between them, we analyze the H-alpha line. The equivalent width is ~8% smaller on the second night, and the signa…
We present detailed abundance results for 9 Galactic bulge stars in Baade's Window, based on HIRES (R=45,000--60,000) spectra taken with the Keck I telescope. The alpha elements show non-uniform enhancements relative to the Solar neighborhood trends: Mg and Si are enhanced in all our bulge stars by $\sim$0.5--0.3 dex, showing a slight decrease with increasing [Fe/H]. Oxygen is enhanced in most bulge stars, similar to the Galactic halo, but the [O/Fe] ratios suddenly decline beginning at [Fe/H]=$-$0.5 dex, with a slope consistent with no oxygen production in the bulge for [Fe/H]$\geq$$-$0.5 dex…
We present 18 spectra, obtained with the Keck 10m telescope, of faint field galaxies (19 $<$ I $<$ 22, 0.2 $<$ z $<$ 0.84) previously imaged by {\it HST's} WFPC2. Though small, our sample appears to be representative of field spirals with a magnitude--limit of I $\le$ 22. Combining the results from the spectral and imaging data, we have derived various quantitative parameters for the galaxies, including colors, inclinations, emission line equivalent widths, redshifts, luminosities, internal velocity information and physical scale lengths. In particular, disk scale lengths (with sizes ranging f…
Optical high-resolution spectra of five central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Galactic Bulge have been obtained with Keck/HIRES in order to derive their parameters. Since the distance of the objects is quite well known, such a method has the advantage that stellar luminosities and masses can in principle be determined without relying on theoretical relations between both quantities. By alternatively combining the results of our spectroscopic investigation with evolutionary tracks, we obtain so-called spectroscopic distances, which can be compared with the known (average) distance of…
We report the results of our campaign to follow-up spectroscopically several candidate extrasolar transiting planets from the OGLE-III survey in the direction of the Galactic center, announced in 2001 (Udalski et al 2002a,b). All of these objects present shallow and periodic dips in brightness that may be due to planetary companions. Our high-resolution Keck I/HIRES observations have revealed two interesting cases (OGLE-TR-10 with a period of 3.1 days, and OGLE-TR-58 with a period of 4.3 days) that show no radial velocity variations at the level of 100--200 m/s. If orbited by companions, their…
We have employed natural guide star adaptive optics (AO) on the Keck II telescope to obtain near-infrared (H and K') images of three field galaxies, each of redshift greater than 0.5. These are among the highest-redshift non-active disk galaxies to be imaged with AO. Each of the galaxies was chosen because it had been observed previously with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) by others. Our AO images in the near infrared (NIR) closely match both the depth and high spatial resolution of those optical data. Combining the archival V and I data with our new H a…
We report here on a sample of resolved, infrared images of galaxies at z~0.5 taken with the 10-m Keck Telescope's Adaptive Optics (AO) system. We regularly achieve a spatial resolution of 0.05'' and are thus able to resolve both the disk and bulge components. We have extracted morphological information for ten galaxies and compared their properties to those of a local sample. The selection effects of both samples were explicitly taken into account in order to derive the unbiased result that disks at z~0.5 are ~0.6 mag arcsec^-2 brighter than, and about the same size as, local disks. The no-lum…
We have identified a clustering of red galaxies from deep optical/IR images obtained as part of the Institute for Astronomy Deep Survey. Photometric spectral-energy distributions indicate that most of these galaxies comprise nearly pure old stellar populations at a redshift near 1.4, and Keck spectroscopy of the three brightest red galaxies confirm this interpretation and give redshifts ranging from 1.335 to 1.338. Four of the galaxies are close together on the sky and less than 30" from an R=13.5 star, and we have obtained deep adaptive-optics imaging of this group. Detailed analysis and mode…
We construct a mass model for the spiral lens galaxy 2237+0305, at redshift z_l=0.04, based on gravitational-lensing constraints, HI rotation, and new stellar-kinematic information, based on data taken with the ESI spectrograph on the 10m Keck-II Telescope. High resolution rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles along two perpendicular directions, close to the major and minor axes of the lens galaxy, were obtained by fitting the Mgb-Fe absorption line region. The stellar rotation curve rises slowly and flattens at r~1.5" (~1.1 kpc). The velocity dispersion profile is approximately fla…
We report deep Keck narrow-band Lya images of the luminous z > 3 radio galaxies 4C 41.17, 4C 60.07, and B2 0902+34. The images show giant, 100-200 kpc scale emission line nebulae, centered on these galaxies, which exhibit a wealth of morphological structure, including extended low surface brightness emission in the outer regions, radially directed filaments, cone-shaped structures and (indirect) evidence for extended Lya absorption. We discuss these features within a general scenario where the nebular gas cools gravitationally in large Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos, forming stars and multiple s…
NGC 3621 is a late-type (Sd) spiral galaxy with an active nucleus, previously detected through mid-infrared [Ne V] line emission. Archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images reveal that the galaxy contains a bright and compact nuclear star cluster. We present a new high-resolution optical spectrum of this nuclear cluster, obtained with the ESI Spectrograph at the Keck Observatory. The nucleus has a Seyfert 2 emission-line spectrum at optical wavelengths, supporting the hypothesis that a black hole is present. The line-of-sight stellar velocity dispersion of the cluster is sigma=43+/-3 km/s, o…
As part of the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP) survey, a sample of 190 field galaxies (I_{814} <= 23.5) in the ``Groth Survey Strip'' has been used to analyze the magnitude-size relation over the range 0.1 < z < 1.1. The survey is statistically complete to this magnitude limit. All galaxies have photometric structural parameters, including bulge fractions (B/T), from Hubble Space Telescope images, and spectroscopic redshifts from the Keck Telescope. The analysis includes a determination of the survey selection function in the magnitude-size plane as a function of redshift, which m…
The Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP) is a series of spectroscopic surveys of faint galaxies, targeted at the properties and clustering of galaxies at redshifts z ~ 1. We present the redshift catalog of the DEEP 1 GSS pilot phase of this project, a Keck/LRIS survey in the HST/WFPC2 Groth Survey Strip. The redshift catalog and data, including reduced spectra, are publicly available through a Web-accessible database. The catalog contains 658 secure galaxy redshifts with a median z=0.65, and shows large-scale structure walls to z = 1. We find a bimodal distribution in the galaxy color-…
We have obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 24 red galaxies from a sample with median Ks=18.7 and F814W - Ks > 4, using the Keck telescope. These EROshave high resolution morphologies from HST (Yan & Thompson 2003). Among the 24 redshifts, the majority (92%) are at $ 0.9 < z < 1.5$. We derived the rest-frame J-band luminosity function at $z_{median} =1.14$. Our result suggests that the luminosity evolution between bright EROs at $z\sim 1$ and the present-day $>$L$^*$ massive galaxies is at most about 0.7 magnitude. Combining the morphologies and deep spectroscopy revealed the following proper…
To investigate the role of feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in driving the evolution of their host galaxies, we have carried out a study of the environments and optical properties of galaxies harboring X-ray luminous AGN in the Cl1604 supercluster at z~0.9. Making use of Chandra, HST/ACS and Keck/DEIMOS observations, we examine the integrated colors, morphologies and spectral properties of nine moderate-luminosity (L_x ~ 10^43 erg s^-1) type 2 Seyferts detected in the Cl1604 complex. We find that the AGN are predominantly hosted by luminous spheroids and/or bulge dominated galaxies w…
Fundamental Plane studies provide an excellent means of understanding the evolutionary history of early-type galaxies. Using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck telescope, we obtained internal stellar kinematic information for 36 field galaxies in the Groth Strip--21 early-type and 15 disk galaxies. Their redshifts range from 0.3--1.0, with a median redshift 0.8. The slope of the relation shows no difference compared with the local slope. However, there is significant evolution in the zero-point offset; an offset due to evolution in magnitude requires a 2.4 magnitude luminosity…
We present a comprehensive catalog of high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck II telescope for a sample of F850LP<22.43 (AB) field spheroidal (E+S0s; 163) and bulge dominated disk (61) galaxies in the redshift range 0.2<z<1.2. We examine the zero point, tilt and scatter of the Fundamental Plane (FP) as a function of redshift and morphological properties, carefully accounting for luminosity-dependent biases via Montecarlo simulations. The evolution of the overall FP can be represented by a mean change in effective mass-to-light ratio given by <d \log (M/L_…
We confirm spectroscopically the existence of a population of galaxies at z>~2 with rest-frame optical colors similar to normal nearby galaxies. The galaxies were identified by their red near-infrared colors in deep images obtained with ISAAC on the Very Large Telescope. Redshifts of six galaxies with Js-Ks>2.3 were measured from optical spectra obtained with the Keck Telescope. Five out of six are in the range 2.43<=z<=3.52, demonstrating that the Js-Ks color selection is quite efficient. The rest-frame ultraviolet spectra of confirmed z>2 galaxies display a range of properties, with two gala…
