A new model of quantum mechanics, Classical Quantum Mechanics, is based on the (nearly heretical) postulate that electrons are physical objects that obey classical physical laws. Indeed, ionization energies, excitation energies etc. are computed based on picturing electrons as bubbles of charge that symmetrically surround a nucleus. Hence, for example, simple algebraic expressions based on Newtonian force balances are used to predict ionization energies and stable excitation states with remarkable precision. One of the most startling predictions of the model is that there are stable sizes of the hydrogen atom electron (bubble diameter) that are smaller (called hydrinos) than that calculated for the standard ground state. Experimental evidence in support of this novel physical/classical version of quantum is alleged to be found in the existence of super heated hydrogen atoms reported by many teams in a variety of plasmas. It is postulated that the energy required for creating super heated H aoms comes from the shrinkage of ground state H atoms to form hydrinos. This claim is discussed with reference to a brief review of the published studies of line broadening.
Theoretical framework for power dissipation in low temperature plasmas in corona equilibrium is developed. The framework is based on fundamental conservation laws and reaction cross sections and is only weakly sensitive to plasma parameters, e.g. electron temperature and density. The theory is applied to low temperature atomic and molecular hydrogen laboratory plasmas for which the plasma heating power dissipation to photon emission, ionization and chemical potential is calculated. The calculated photon emission is compared to recent experimental results.
Gyrokinetic simulations of magnetic reconnection are presented to investigate plasma heating for strongly magnetized, weakly collisional plasmas. For a low plasma beta case, parallel and perpendicular phase mixing strongly enhance energy dissipation yielding electron heating. Heating occurs for a long time period after a dynamical process of magnetic reconnection ended. For a higher beta case, the ratio of ion to electron dissipation rate increases, suggesting that ion heating (via phase-mixing) may become an important dissipation channel in high beta plasmas.
Electron emission from the boundary is ubiquitous in capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) and precipitates nonnegligible influences on the discharge properties. Here we present the PIC-MCC simulation of an Ohmic-dominant heating mode of capacitively coupled plasma where the stochastic heating vanishes and only Ohmic heating sustains the discharge, due to sheath inversion by boundary electron emission. The inverted CCP features negative sheath potential without Bohm presheath, hence excluding plasma heating due to sheath edge oscillation. The particle and energy transport of the proposed heating m…
A fusion reactor requires plasma pre-heating before the rate of deuterium-tritium fusion reactions becomes significant. In ITER, radiofrequency (RF) heating of 3He ions, additionally puffed into the plasma, is one of the main options considered for increasing bulk ion temperature during the ramp-up phase of the pulse. In this paper, we propose an alternative scenario for bulk ion heating with RF waves, which requires no extra 3He puff and profits from the presence of intrinsic Beryllium impurities in the plasma. The discussed method to heat Be impurities in D-T plasmas is shown to provide an e…
In this experiment, we measure ion temperature evolution of collisional plasma shocks and colliding supersonic plasma flows across a range of species (Ar, Kr, Xe, N), Mach numbers, and collisionalities. Shocks are formed via the collision of discrete plasma jets relevant to plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF). We observe nearly classical ion shock heating and ion-electron equilibration, with peak temperatures attained consistent with collisional shock heating. We also observe cases where this heating occurs in a smooth merged structure with reduced density gradients due to signif…
Electron heating in an ultracold neutral plasma is modeled using classical molecular dynamics simulations in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. A sufficiently strong magnetic field is found to reduce disorder induced heating and three body recombination heating of electrons by constraining electron motion, and therefore heating, to the single dimension aligned with the magnetic field. A strong and long-lasting temperature anisotropy develops, and the overall kinetic electron temperature is effectively reduced by a factor of three. These results suggest that experiments may i…
Magnetic reconnection and associated heating of ions and electrons in strongly magnetised, weakly collisional plasmas are studied by means of gyrokinetic simulations. It is shown that an appreciable amount of the released magnetic energy is dissipated to yield (irreversible) electron and ion heating via phase mixing. Electron heating is mostly localized to the magnetic island, not the current sheet, and occurs after the dynamical reconnection stage. Ion heating is comparable to electron heating only in high-beta plasmas, and results from both parallel phase mixing and perpendicular phase mixin…
We present explicit, analytical heating formulas that predict the heating rates of spherical, nonneutral plasmas stored in a Paul trap as a function of cloud size $S$, particle number $N$, and Paul-trap control parameter $q$ in the low-temperature regime close to the cloud $\rightarrow$ crystal phase transition. We find excellent agreement between our analytical heating formulas and detailed, time-dependent molecular-dynamics simulations of the trapped plasmas. We also present the results of our numerical solutions of a temperature-dependent mean-field equation, which are consistent with our n…
The collision of two expanding plasma clouds is investigated, emphasizing instabilities and electron energization in the plasma mixing layer. This work is directly relevant to laboratory experiments with explosively-created laser or z-pinch plasmas but may also elucidate naturally occurring plasma collisions in astrophysical or space physics contexts. In the previous publications [1,2] we have studied, analytically and numerically, the flow emerging from interpenetrating coronas launched by two parallel wires vaporized in a vacuum chamber. The main foci of the studies have been on the general …
In the present work, a process of a selective generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as H2O2 and dissolved O3 in plasma-activated water (PAW) is discussed. For selective ROS generation, pure CO2 was used as a plasma-forming gas. The gases species present in plasma and properties of PAW are compared in details when CO2 and air are used as plasma forming gas. The results reveal that PAW (CO2) has significantly higher pH, and low oxidizing potential and electrical conductivity compared to PAW (air). The formed species in PAW (CO2) due to CO2 plasma-water interaction are dissolved O3, H2…
We analyze plasma heating in weakly collisional kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) turbulence using high resolution gyrokinetic simulations spanning the range of scales between the ion and the electron gyroradii. Real space structures that have a higher than average heating rate are shown not to be confined to current sheets. This novel result is at odds with previous studies, which use the electromagnetic work in the local electron fluid frame, i.e. $\mathbf{J} \!\cdot\! (\mathbf{E} + \mathbf{v}_e\times\mathbf{B})$, as a proxy for turbulent dissipation to argue that heating follows the intermittent sp…
We present time-resolved measurements of ion heating due to collisional plasma shocks and interpenetrating supersonic plasma flows, which are formed by the oblique merging of two coaxial-gun-formed plasma jets. Our study was repeated using four jet species: N, Ar, Kr, and Xe. In conditions with small interpenetration between jets, the observed peak ion temperature Ti is consistent with the predictions of collisional plasma-shock theory, showing a substantial elevation of Ti above the electron temperature Te and also the subsequent decrease of Ti on the classical ion-electron temperature-equili…
The self-excitation of Plasma Series Resonance (PSR) oscillations plays an important role in the electron heating dynamics in Capacitively Coupled Radio Frequency (CCRF) plasmas. In a combined approach of PIC/MCC simulations and a theoretical model based on an equivalent circuit, we investigate the self-excitation of PSR oscillations and their effect on the electron heating in geometrically symmetric CCRF plasmas driven by multiple consecutive harmonics. The discharge symmetry is controlled via the Electrical Asymmetry Effect, i.e. by varying the total number of harmonics and tuning the phase …
Transitions to improved confinement regimes induced by changes in heating in zero-dimensional models for tokamak plasmas

A theoretical model is developed and evaluated using a Vlasov-Poisson treatment to calculate radiofrequency (RF) electric field heating rates for magnetized electrons in neutral plasma when the magnetic and electric field directions are colinear and when the RF is of sufficiently high frequency. This calculation reduces to the theory for magnetized longitudinal AC conductivity introduced by Oberman and Shure [C. Oberman and F. Shure, Phys. Fluids 6, 834-838 (1963)] in the low-amplitude limit when the electron oscillation velocity is much less than the thermal velocity. For electron coupling st…
When propagating inside dielectrics, an ultrafast Bessel beam creates a high aspect-ratio cylinder of plasma with nanometric diameter that extends over several tens of micrometers to centimeters. We analyze the interaction between the intense ultrafast laser pulse and the plasma rod using particle-in-cell simulations. We show that electrons are heated and accelerated up to keV energies via transit acceleration inside the resonance lobes in the vicinity of the critical surface and compute their radiation pattern.
Observational evidence in space and astrophysical plasmas with long collisional mean free path suggests that more massive charged particles may be preferentially heated. One possible mechanism for this is the turbulent cascade of energy from injection to dissipation scales, where the energy is converted to heat. Here we consider a simple system consisting of a magnetized plasma slab of electrons and a single ion species with a cross-field density gradient. We show that such a system is subject to an electron drift wave instability, known as the universal instability, which is stabilized only w…
The electron residual energy originated from the stochastic heating in under-dense field-ionized plasma is here investigated. The optical response of plasma is initially modeled by using the concept of two counter-propagating electromagnetic waves. The solution of motion equation of a single electron indicates that by including the ionization, the electron with higher residual energy compared to the case without ionization could be obtained. In agreement with chaotic nature of the motion, it is found that the electron residual energy will significantly be changed by applying a minor change to …
We identify a mechanism for magnetic field generation in the interaction of intense electromagnetic waves and underdense plasmas. We show that Raman scattered plasma waves trap and heat the electrons preferentially in their propagation direction, resulting in a temperature anisotropy. In the trail of the laser pulse, we observe magnetic field growth which matches the Weibel mechanism due to the temperature anisotropy. We discuss the role of the initial electron temperature in our results. The predictions are confirmed with multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. We show how this config…

Overdense plasmas have been attained with 2.45 GHz microwave heating in the low-field, low-aspect-ratio CNT stellarator. Densities higher than four times the ordinary (O) mode cutoff density were measured with 8 kW of power injected in the O-mode and, alternatively, with 6.5 kW in the extraordinary (X) mode. The temperature profiles peak at the plasma edge. This was ascribed to collisional damping of the X-mode at the upper hybrid resonant layer. The X-mode reaches that location by tunneling, mode-conversions or after polarization-scrambling reflections off the wall and in-vessel coils, regard…
Negative ion production with conventional multicusp plasma chambers utilizing 2.45 GHz microwave heating is demonstrated. The experimental results were obtained with the multicusp plasma chambers and extraction systems of the RFdriven RADIS ion source and the filament driven arc discharge ion source LIISA. A waveguide microwave coupling system, which is almost similar to the one used with the SILHI ion source, was used. The results demonstrate that at least one third of negative ion beam obtained with inductive RF-coupling (RADIS) or arc discharge (LIISA) can be achieved with 1 kW of 2.45 GHz …
This work presents a magnetic reconnection experiment in which the kinetic, magnetic and thermal properties of the plasma each play an important role in the overall energy balance and structure of the generated reconnection layer. Magnetic reconnection occurs during the interaction of continuous and steady flows of super-Alfvenic, magnetized, aluminum plasma, which collide in a geometry with two-dimensional symmetry, producing a stable and long-lasting reconnection layer. Optical Thomson scattering measurements show that when the layer forms, ions inside the layer are more strongly heated than…
A two-dimensional fluid model is used to investigate the electron heating dynamics and the production of neutral species in a capacitively coupled radio-frequency micro atmospheric pressure helium plasma jet -- specifically the COST jet -- with a small oxygen admixture. Electron heating mode transitions are found to be induced by varying the driving voltage amplitude and the O$_2$ concentration numerically and experimentally. The helium metastable density, and the charged species densities are highly relevant to the electron heating dynamics. By analyzing the creation and destruction mechanism…
We analyze a new mechanism for the creation and confinement of energetic electrons in a mirror-configuration plasma. A Fermi-Ulam-type process, driven by end-localized coherent electrostatic oscillations, provides axial acceleration while a natural non-adiabaticity of μ provides phase decorrelation and energy isotropization. This novel 2-D combination causes the electron energy distribution function, calculated with a diffusive-loss model, to assume a Maxwellian shape with the μ non-adiabaticity reducing loss-cone escape and annulling the absolute-barrier energy-limiting Chirikov criterion of …
Analysis of helicon wave heating and current drive capability in EXL-50 spherical torus plasmas has been conducted. It is found that the driven current increases with the launched parallel refractive index $n_{||}$ and peaks around $n_{||} = 4.0$ when the frequency of the helicon wave is between 300~MHz and 380~MHz. The helicon wave current drive efficiency shows a relatively stable upward trend with increasing plasma temperature. Moreover, the driven current decreases as the plasma density increases. We also analyzed the current drive with helicon waves of 150~MHz and 170~MHz and found that t…

The interaction of ultraintense laser pulses with solids is largely affected by the plasma gradient at the vacuum-solid interface, which modifies the absorption and ultimately, controls the energy distribution function of heated electrons. A micrometer scale-length plasma has been predicted to yield a significant enhancement of the energy and weight of the fast electron population and to play a major role in laser-driven proton acceleration with thin foils. We report on recent experimental results on proton acceleration from laser interaction with foil targets at ultra-relativistic intensities…
We investigate the electron heating dynamics in electropositive argon and helium capacitively coupled RF discharges driven at 13.56 MHz by Particle in Cell simulations and by an analytical model. The model allows to calculate the electric field outside the electrode sheaths, space and time resolved within the RF period. Electrons are found to be heated by strong ambipolar electric fields outside the sheath during the phase of sheath expansion in addition to classical sheath expansion heating. By tracing individual electrons we also show that ionization is primarily caused by electrons that col…
The principal objective of this work is to report on the power coupled to a tungsten target in the Proto-MPEX device during oblique injection of a microwave beam (< 70 kW at 28 GHz) into a high-power (~100 kW at 13.56 MHz) over-dense (n_e>1E10^19 m^(-3)) deuterium helicon plasma column. The experimental setup, electron heating system, electron heating scheme, and IR thermographic diagnostic for quantifying the power transport is described in detail. It is demonstrated that the power transported to the target can be effectively controlled by adjusting the magnetic field profile. Using this meth…
Radio Frequency (RF) driven helicon plasma sources are commonly used for their ability to produce high-density argon plasmas (n > 10^19/m^3) at relatively moderate powers (typical RF power < 2 kW). Typical electron temperatures are < 10 eV and typical ion temperatures are < 0.6 eV. A newly designed helicon antenna assembly (with concentric, double-layered, fully liquid-cooled RF-transparent windows) operates in steady-state at RF powers up to 10 kW. We report on the dependence of argon plasma density, electron temperature and ion temperature on RF power. At 10 kW, ion temperatures > 2 eV in ar…

The temperature dependence of rates of electron impact ionization and two electrons recombination are calculated using Wannier cross section of electron impact ionization of neutral hydrogen atom. Entropy production and power dissipation are derived for the case when the ionization degree deviates from its equilibrium value. This is the special case of the obtained general formula for entropy production accompanying chemical reactions. Damping rate of the sound waves is calculated and the conditions when ionization processes dominate are considered. A quasi-classical approximation for the heat…

A prototype of MPEX referred as Porto-MPEX is designed to carry out research and development related to source, heating and transport concepts on the planned full MPEX device. The auxiliary heating schemes in MPEX are based on cyclotron resonance heating with radio frequency (RF) waves. Megaelectron volt (MeV) alpha particles will be the main source of plasma heating in magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Yet, instead of heating fuel ions, most of the energy of alpha particles is transferred to electrons. Furthermore, alpha particles can also excite Alfvenic instabilities, previously considered as detrimental. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate efficient ion heating in the presence of MeV ions and strong fast-ion driven Alfvenic instabilities in recent experiments on the Joint European Torus (JET). Detailed transport analysis of these experiments with state-of-the-art…
A novel electron heating mechanism based on periodically structured vortex fields induced in a plane was first proposed in 2014 [U. Czarnetzki and Kh. Tarnev, Physics of Plasmas 21, 123508 (2014)]. This theoretical concept has now been realized in an experiment which confirms efficient collisionless heating in such array structures [Ph. Ahr, T.V. Tsankov, J. Kuhfeld, U. Czarnetzki, submitted to Plasma Sources Science and Technology, arXiv:1806.02043v1 (2018)]. The new concept is called "Inductively Coupled Array": INCA. Here, the physical mechanism behind the collisionless (stochastic) heating…
