A symmetric four-level closed-loop $\diamondsuit$ type (the diamond structure) atomic system driven by four coherent optical fields is investigated. The system shows rich quantum interference and coherence features. When symmetry of the system is broken, interesting phenomena such as single and double dark resonances appear. As a result, the double electromagnetically induced transparency effect is generated, which will facilitate the implementation of quantum phase gate operation.
Raman excited spin coherences were experimentally observed in N-V diamond color centers via nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The maximal absorption suppression was found to be 17%, which corresponds to 70% of what is possible given the random geometric orientation of the N-V center in diamond. In the context of quantum computing in solids, this level of transparency represents the efficient preparation of quantum bits (qubits), as well as ability to perform arbitrary single qubit rotations.
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond hold promise in quantum sensing applications. A major interest in them is an enhancement of their sensitivity by the extension of the coherence time ($T_2$). In this report, we experimentally generated more than four dressed states in a single NV centre in diamond based on Autler-Townes splitting (ATS). We also observed the extension of the coherence time to $T_2 \sim$ 1.5 ms which is more than two orders of magnitude longer than that of the undressed states. As an example of a quantum application using these results we propose a protocol of quantum sen…
We experimentally demonstrate over two orders of magnitude increase in the coherence time of nitrogen vacancy centres in diamond by implementing decoupling techniques. We show that equal pulse spacing decoupling performs just as well as non-periodic Uhrig decoupling and has the additional benefit that it allows us to take advantage of "revivals" in the echo (due to the coherent nature of the bath) to explore the longest coherence times. At short times, we can extend the coherence of particular quantum states out from T_2*=2.7 us out to an effective T_2 > 340 us. For preserving arbitrary states…
Photon interference among distant quantum emitters is a promising method to generate large scale quantum networks. Interference is best achieved when photons show long coherence times. For the nitrogen-vacancy defect center in diamond we measure the coherence times of photons via optically induced Rabi oscillations. Experiments reveal a close to Fourier transform (i.e. lifetime) limited width of photons emitted even when averaged over minutes. The projected contrast of two-photon interference (0.8) is high enough to envisage the applications in quantum information processing. We report 12 and …
To implement reliable quantum information processing, quantum gates have to be protected together with the qubits from decoherence. Here we demonstrate experimentally on nitrogen-vacancy system that by using continuous wave dynamical decoupling method, not only the coherence time is prolonged by about 20 times, but also the quantum gates is protected for the duration of controlling time. This protocol shares the merits of retaining the superiority of prolonging the coherence time and at the same time easily combining with quantum logic tasks. It is expected to be useful in task where duration …
The effects of an impurity plaquette on the thermal quantum correlations measurement by the concurrence, on the quantum coherence quantified by the recently proposed $l_{1}$-norm of coherence and on the quantum teleportation in a Ising-$XXZ$ diamond chain are discussed. Such an impurity is formed by the XXZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers and the nearest-neighbor Ising coupling between the nodal and interstitial spins. All the interaction parameters are different from those of the rest of the chain. By tailoring them, the quantum entanglement and quantum coherence can be…

The degree of non-Markovianity of a continuous bath can be quantified by means of the coherence. This simple measure is experimentally accessible through Ramsey spectroscopy, but it is limited to incoherent dynamical maps. We propose an extension of this measure and discuss its application to color centers in diamond, where the optical coherence between two orbital states is affected by interactions with a structured phonon bath. By taking realistic phonon spectral density functions into account, we show that this measure is well-behaved at arbitrary temperatures and that it provides additiona…
The extension of the spin coherence times is a crucial issue for quantum information and quantum sensing. In solid state systems, suppressing noises with various techniques have been demonstrated. On the other hand, an electrical control for suppression is important toward individual controls of on-chip quantum information devices. Here we show the electrical control for extension of the spin coherence times of 40 nm-deep ion-implanted single nitrogen vacancy center spins in diamond by suppressing magnetic noises. We applied 120 V DC across two contacts spaced by 10 micrometers. The spin coher…
Single defects in diamond and especially negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers are very promising quantum systems with wide applications in physics and biology. It was shown that their coherence properties can be strongly improved by growing ultrapure diamond with low concentration of parasitic spins associated with nitrogen electron spins and nuclear spins related to $^{13}$C carbon isotope. Here we report a high quality $^{12}$C-enriched polycrystalline CVD diamond material with properties comparable with single crystals. We find single NVs in the grains of this material, which sh…
Nitrogen-vacancy centres (NVs) in diamond are attractive for research straddling quantum information science and nanoscale magnetometry and thermometry. While ultrapure bulk diamond NVs sustain the longest spin coherence times among optically accessible spins, nanodiamond NVs display persistently poor spin coherence. Here we introduce high-purity nanodiamonds accommodating record-long NV coherence times, >60 us, observed via universal dynamical decoupling. We show that the main contribution to decoherence comes from nearby nitrogen impurities rather than surface states. We protect the NV spin …
We investigated the depth dependence of coherence times of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers through precisely depth controlling by a moderately oxidative at 580°C in air. By successive nanoscale etching, NV centers could be brought close to the diamond surface step by step, which enable us to trace the evolution of the number of NV centers remained in the chip and to study the depth dependence of coherence times of NV centers with the diamond etching. Our results showed that the coherence times of NV centers declined rapidly with the depth reduction in their last about 22 nm before they finally d…
We demonstrate significant improvements of the spin coherence time of a dense ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond through optimized dynamical decoupling (DD). Cooling the sample down to $77$ K suppresses longitudinal spin relaxation $T_1$ effects and DD microwave pulses are used to increase the transverse coherence time $T_2$ from $\sim 0.7$ ms up to $\sim 30$ ms. We extend previous work of single-axis (CPMG) DD towards the preservation of arbitrary spin states. Following a theoretical and experimental characterization of pulse and detuning errors, we compare the performance o…
Shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is promising in quantum sensing applications however its sensitivity has been limited by surface terminators and defects. There is an immediate quest to find suitable diamond surfaces for NV sensors. In this work, the surface terminators of (113) diamond to host shallow NV centers are studied by means of first principles calculations. Results indicate that complete oxygen termination of (113) diamond creates positive electron affinity with neither strain on the surface nor in-gap levels. This is a very surprising result as the commonly employed o…
We demonstrate electrical detection of the $^{14}$N nuclear spin coherence of NV centers at room temperature. Nuclear spins are candidates for quantum memories in quantum-information devices and quantum sensors, and hence the electrical detection of nuclear spin coherence is essential to develop and integrate such quantum devices. In the present study, we used a pulsed electrically detected electron-nuclear double resonance technique to measure the Rabi oscillations and coherence time ($T_2$) of $^{14}$N nuclear spins in NV centers at room temperature. We observed $T_2 \approx$ 0.9 ms at room …
We demonstrate that the spin decoherence of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond can be suppressed by a transverse magnetic field if the electron spin bath is the primary decoherence source. The NV spin coherence, created in "a decoherence-free subspace" is protected by the transverse component of the zero-field splitting, increasing the spin-coherence time about twofold. The decoherence due to the electron spin bath is also suppressed at magnetic fields stronger than ~25 gauss when applied parallel to the NV symmetry axis. Our method can be used to extend the spin-coherence time of simila…
Although a nuclear spin is weakly coupled to its environment, due to its small gyromagnetic ratio, its coherence time is limited by the hyperfine coupling to a nearby noisy electron. Here, we propose to utilize continuous dynamical decoupling to refocus the coupling to the electron. If the random phase accumulated by the nuclear spin through the reduced coupling terms is sufficient small, we can increase the nuclear coherence time. Initially, we demonstrate this on a simple case with a two-level electron spin, while taking all relevant hyperfine coupling terms and noise terms into account. We …
We present an experimental and theoretical study of electronic spin decoherence in ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in bulk high-purity diamond at room temperature. Under appropriate conditions, we find ensemble NV spin coherence times (T_2) comparable to that of single NVs, with T_2 > 600 microseconds for a sample with natural abundance of 13C and paramagnetic impurity density ~10^15 cm^(-3). We also observe a sharp decrease of the coherence time with misalignment of the static magnetic field relative to the NV electronic spin axis, consistent with theoretical modeling of NV c…
Spins of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV$^-$) defects in diamond are among the most promising candidates for solid-state qubits. The fabrication of quantum devices containing these spin-carrying defects requires position-controlled introduction of NV$^-$ defects having excellent properties such as spectral stability, long spin coherence time, and stable negative charge state. Nitrogen ion implantation and annealing enable the positioning of NV$^-$ spin qubits with high precision, but to date, the coherence times of qubits produced this way are short, presumably because of the presence …
We demonstrate coherent control of the optical transition of single Nitrogen-Vacancy defect centers in diamond. On applying short resonant laser pulses, we observe optical Rabi oscillations with a half-period as short as 1 nanosecond, an order of magnitude shorter than the spontaneous emission time. By studying the decay of Rabi oscillations, we find that the decoherence is dominated by laser-induced spectral jumps. By using a low-power probe pulse as a detuning sensor and applying post-selection, we demonstrate that spectral diffusion can be overcome in this system to generate coherent photon…
In recent years, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond have become excellent solid-state quantum sensors due to their electronic spin properties. Especially for their easy optical initialization and detection, together with their very large spin coherence at room temperature. Many studies have reported their use for sensing temperature, strain, electric fields, and mainly magnetic fields. Here, we show how to build a two-dimensional map of the electronic spin coherence of an ensemble of NV centers in ultra-pure diamond, using an optical imaging protocol combined with microwave pulses …
In this thesis, we investigate the quantum mechanical interaction of light with matter in the form of a gas of ultracold atoms: the atomic ensemble. We present a theoretical analysis of two problems, which involve the interaction of quantized electromagnetic fields (called signal and idler) with the atomic ensemble (i) cascade two-photon emission in an atomic ladder configuration, and (ii) photon frequency conversion in an atomic diamond configuration. The motivation of these studies comes from potential applications in long-distance quantum communication where it is desirable to generate quan…
Negatively charged Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV$^-$) centers in diamond produced by ion implantation often show properties different from NVs created during the crystal growth. We observe that NVs created from nitrogen ions with four different energies (30-300 keV) show much shorter electron spin coherence time $T_2$ compared to the "natural" NVs and we could find any dependence of $T_2$ on the implantation energy. Moreover, we also find out that about 10% of them show switching from NV$^-$to NV$^0$. We develop a method to increase $T_2$ of single NV$^-$ centers by annealing the sample at $t=1200 {\ci…
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre, as a promising candidate solid state system of quantum information processing, its electron spin coherence is influenced by the magnetic field fluctuations due to the local environment. In pure diamonds, the environment consists of hundreds of C-13 nuclear spins randomly spreading in several nanometers range forming a spin bath. Controlling and prolonging the electron spin coherence under the influence of spin bath are challenging tasks for the quantum information processing. On the other hand, for a given bath distribution, many of its characters are encoded …
One of the biggest challenges to implement quantum protocols and quantum information processing (QIP) is achieving long coherence times, usually requiring systems at ultra-low temperatures. The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a promising alternative to this problem. Due to its spin properties, easy manipulation, and the possibility of doing optical state initialization and readout, it quickly became one of the best solid-state spin systems for QIP at room temperature. Here, we present the characterization of the spin-coherence of an ensemble of NV centers in an engineered sample of …
We theoretically investigate the spectral entanglement of a multiphoton source generated from the cascade emissions in the cascaded cold atomic ensembles.\ This photon source is highly directional, guaranteed under the four-wave mixing condition, and is also highly frequency-correlated due to finite driving pulse durations and superradiant decay constants.\ We utilize Schmidt decomposition to study the bipartite entanglement of the biphoton states projected from the multiphoton ones.\ This entropy of entanglement can be manipulated by controlling the driving parameters and superradiant decay r…
On-demand, high repetition rate sources of indistinguishable, polarised single photons are the key component for future photonic quantum technologies. Colour centres in diamond offer a promising solution, and the narrow line-width of the recently identified nickel-based NE8 centre makes it particularly appealing for realising the transform-limited sources necessary for quantum interference. Here we report the characterisation of dipole orientation and coherence properties of a single NE8 colour centre in a diamond nanocrystal at room-temperature. We observe a single photon coherence time of 0.…
Pulsed ESR experiments are reported for ensembles of negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV$^-$) in diamonds at X-band magnetic fields (280-400 mT) and low temperatures (2-70 K). The NV$^-$ centers in synthetic type IIb diamonds (nitrogen impurity concentration $<1$~ppm) are prepared with bulk concentrations of $2\cdot 10^{13}$ cm$^{-3}$ to $4\cdot 10^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$ by high-energy electron irradiation and subsequent annealing. We find that a proper post-radiation anneal (1000$^\circ$C for 60 mins) is critically important to repair the radiation damage and to recover long electron spi…
We demonstrate fluorescence thermometry techniques with sensitivities approaching 10 mK Hz^(-1/2) based on the spin-dependent photoluminescence of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. These techniques use dynamical decoupling protocols to convert thermally induced shifts in the NV center's spin resonance frequencies into large changes in its fluorescence. By mitigating interactions with nearby nuclear spins and facilitating selective thermal measurements, these protocols enhance the spin coherence times accessible for thermometry by 45x, corresponding to a 7x improvement in the NV center'…
Atomic-scale impurity spins, also called color centers, in an otherwise spin-free diamond host lattice have proven to be versatile tools for applications in solid-state-based quantum technologies ranging from quantum information processing (QIP) to quantum-enhanced sensing and metrology. Due to its wide band gap, diamond can host hundreds of different color centers. However, their suitability for QIP or sensing applications has only been tested for a handful of these, with the nitrogen vacancy (NV) strongly dominating this field of research. Due to its limited optical properties, the success o…
We characterize single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers created by 10-keV N+ ion implantation into diamond via thin SiO$_2$ layers working as screening masks. Despite the relatively high acceleration energy compared with standard ones (< 5 keV) used to create near-surface NV centers, the screening masks modify the distribution of N$^+$ ions to be peaked at the diamond surface [Ito et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 110, 213105 (2017)]. We examine the relation between coherence times of the NV electronic spins and their depths, demonstrating that a large portion of NV centers are located within 10 nm from …
We experimentally investigate the protection of electron spin coherence of nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond by dynamical nuclear polarization. The electron spin decoherence of an NV center is caused by the magnetic ield fluctuation of the $^{13}$C nuclear spin bath, which contributes large thermal fluctuation to the center electron spin when it is in equilibrium state at room temperature. To address this issue, we continuously transfer the angular momentum from electron spin to nuclear spins, and pump the nuclear spin bath to a polarized state under Hartman-Hahn condition. The bath pola…
The advancement of quantum optical science and technology with solid-state emitters such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond critically relies on the coherence of the emitters' optical transitions. A widely employed strategy to create NV centers at precisely controlled locations is nitrogen ion implantation followed by a high-temperature annealing process. We report on experimental data directly correlating the NV center optical coherence to the origin of the nitrogen atom. These studies reveal low-strain, narrow-optical-linewidth ($<500$ MHz) NV centers formed from naturally-occurring…

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is an ideal candidate for quantum sensors because of its excellent optical and coherence property. However, previous studies are usually conducted at low or room temperature. The lack of full knowledge of coherence properties of the NV center at high temperature limits NV's further applications. Here, we systematically explore the coherence properties of the NV center ensemble at temperatures from 300 K to 600 K. Coherence time $T_2$ decreases rapidly from $184 μs$ at 300 K to $30 μs$ at 600 K, which is attributed to the interaction with paramagnetic imp…
The negatively-charged silicon-vacancy (SiV$^-$) color center in diamond has recently emerged as a promising system for quantum photonics. Its symmetry-protected optical transitions enable creation of indistinguishable emitter arrays and deterministic coupling to nanophotonic devices. Despite this, the longest coherence time associated with its electronic spin achieved to date ($\sim 250$ ns) has been limited by coupling to acoustic phonons. We demonstrate coherent control and suppression of phonon-induced dephasing of the SiV$^-$ electronic spin coherence by five orders of magnitude by operat…
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have become an important tool for quantum technologies. All of these applications rely on long coherence times of electron and nuclear spins associated with these centers. Here, we study the energy level anti-crossings of an NV center in diamond coupled to a first-shell 13C nuclear spin in a small static magnetic field. These level anti-crossings occur for specific orientations of the static magnetic field due to the strong non-secular components of the Hamiltonian. At these orientations we observe decoherence-free subspaces, where the electron spin coh…
Integrating solid-state quantum emitters with nanophotonic resonators is essential for efficient spin-photon interfacing and optical networking applications. While diamond color centers have proven to be excellent candidates for emerging quantum technologies, their integration with optical resonators remains challenging. Conventional approaches based on etching resonators into diamond often negatively impact color center performance and offer low device yield. Here, we developed an integrated photonics platform based on templated atomic layer deposition of TiO2 on diamond membranes. Our fabric…
With atomic spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), we propose a novel scheme to coherently control the atom--photon momentum entanglement through atomic internal coherence. A novel phenomena of ``phase entanglement in momentum'' is proposed, and we found, under certain conditions, that super--high degree of momentum entanglement can be produced with this scheme.
Knowing a quantum system's environment is critical for its practical use as a quantum device. Qubit sensors can reconstruct the noise spectral density of a classical bath, provided long enough coherence time. Here we present a protocol that can unravel the characteristics of a more complex environment, comprising both unknown coherently coupled quantum systems, and a larger quantum bath that can be modeled as a classical stochastic field. We exploit the rich environment of a Nitrogen-Vacancy center in diamond, tuning the environment behavior with a bias magnetic field, to experimentally demons…
We have experimentally demonstrated the enhancement of coherent Raman scattering in Rb atomic vapor by exciting atomic coherence with fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. The results support the possibility of increasing the sensitivity of CARS by preparing atomic or molecular coherence using short pulses.
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond allows room-temperature wide-field quantum magnetometry and metrology for a small volume, which is an important technology for applications in biology. Although coherence of the NV center has a limited frequency resolution of diamond magnetometry to 10-100 kHz, recent studies have shown that a phase sensitive protocol can beat the coherence limit on a confocal setup. Here, we report a new measurement protocol, "iQdyne," for improving the frequency resolution of wide-field imaging beyond the coherence limit of the NV center. We demonstrate wide-field …

There is generally no obvious evidence in any direct relation between photon blockade and atomic coherence. Here instead of only illustrating the photon statistics, we show an interesting relation between the steady-state photon blockade and the atomic coherence by designing a weakly driven cavity QED system with a two-level atom trapped. It is shown for the first time that the maximal atomic coherence has a perfect correspondence with the optimal photon blockade. The negative effects of the strong dissipations on photon statistics, atomic coherence and their correspondence are also addressed.…
