We explore the capacity and generalized degrees of freedom of the two-user Gaussian X channel, i.e. a generalization of the 2 user interference channel where there is an independent message from each transmitter to each receiver. There are three main results in this paper. First, we characterize the sum capacity of the deterministic X channel model under a symmetric setting. Second, we characterize the generalized degrees of freedom of the Gaussian X channel under a similar symmetric model. Third, we extend the noisy interference capacity characterization previously obtained for the interference channel to the X channel. Specifically, we show that the X channel associated with noisy (very weak) interference channel has the same sum capacity as the noisy interference channel.
This paper gives the approximate capacity region of a two-user MIMO interference channel with limited receiver cooperation, where the gap between the inner and outer bounds is in terms of the total number of receive antennas at the two receivers and is independent of the actual channel values. The approximate capacity region is then used to find the degrees of freedom region. For the special case of symmetric interference channels, we also find the amount of receiver cooperation in terms of the backhaul capacity beyond which the degrees of freedom do not improve. Further, the generalized degre…
The discrete-time Wiener phase noise channel with an integrate-and-dump multi-sample receiver is studied. A novel outer bound on the capacity with an average input power constraint is derived as a function of the oversampling factor. This outer bound yields the degrees of freedom for the scenario in which the oversampling factor grows with the transmit power $P$ as $P^α$. The result shows, perhaps surprisingly, that the largest pre-log that can be attained with phase modulation at high signal-to-noise ratio is at most $1/4$.
In this paper, we study the effect of feedback on two-user MIMO interference channels. The capacity region of MIMO interference channels with feedback is characterized within a constant number of bits, where this constant is independent of the channel matrices. Further, it is shown that the capacity region of a MIMO interference channel with feedback and its reciprocal interference channel are within a constant number of bits. Finally, the generalized degrees of freedom region for the MIMO interference channel with feedback is characterized.
Interference alignment is a key technique for communication scenarios with multiple interfering links. In several such scenarios, interference alignment was used to characterize the degrees-of-freedom of the channel. However, these degrees-of-freedom capacity approximations are often too weak to make accurate predictions about the behavior of channel capacity at finite signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The aim of this paper is to significantly strengthen these results by showing that interference alignment can be used to characterize capacity to within a constant gap. We focus on real, time-invar…
Wireless fading networks with multiple antennas are typically studied information-theoretically from two different perspectives - the outage characterization and the ergodic capacity characterization. A key parameter in the outage characterization of a network is the diversity, whereas a first-order indicator for the ergodic capacity is the degrees of freedom (DOF), which is the pre-log coefficient in the capacity expression. In this paper, we present max-flow min-cut type theorems for computing both the diversity and the degrees of freedom of arbitrary single-source single-sink multi-antenna …
It has been generally believed that the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel capacity grows linearly with the size of antenna arrays. In terms of degrees of freedom, linear transmit and receive arrays of length $L$ in a scattering environment of total angular spread $|Ω|$ asymptotically have $|Ω| L$ degrees of freedom. In this paper, it is claimed that the linear increase in degrees of freedom may not be attained when scattered electromagnetic fields in the underlying scattering environment are statistically correlated. After introducing a model of correlated scattering, which is refe…
In this paper, we study the capacity and degree-of-freedom (DoF) scaling for the continuous-time amplitude limited AWGN channels in radio frequency (RF) and intensity modulated optical communication (OC) channels. More precisely, we study how the capacity varies in terms of the OFDM block transmission time $T$, bandwidth $W$, amplitude $A$, and the noise spectral density $N_0$. We first find suitable discrete encoding spaces for both cases, and prove that they are convex sets that have a semi-definite programming (SDP) representation. Using tools from convex geometry, we find lower and upper b…
In this paper, we characterize the information-theoretic capacity scaling of wireless ad hoc networks with $n$ randomly distributed nodes. By using an exact channel model from Maxwell's equations, we successfully resolve the conflict in the literature between the linear capacity scaling by Özgür et al. and the degrees of freedom limit given as the ratio of the network diameter and the wavelength $λ$ by Franceschetti et al. In dense networks where the network area is fixed, the capacity scaling is given as the minimum of $n$ and the degrees of freedom limit $λ^{-1}$ to within an arbitrarily sma…
A 3-user device-to-device (D2D) communications scenario is studied where each user wants to send and receive a message from each other user. This scenario resembles a 3-way communication channel. The capacity of this channel is unknown in general. In this paper, a sum-capacity upper bound that characterizes the degrees-of-freedom of the channel is derived by using genie-aided arguments. It is further shown that the derived upper bound is achievable within a gap of 2 bits, thus leading to an approximate sum-capacity characterization for the 3-way channel. As a by-product, interesting analogies …
Similar to the energy flowing process in traditional heat engines, information could be considered to flow in the communication systems with the form of energy and entropy. Combining the thermodynamic Carnot machine and the classical Shannon information theory, a generalized thermodynamic MIMO (multiple input multiple outputs) communication system is established to analyze the channel capacity using forward error correction codes. Based on the concepts of freedom and entropy in the communication system, the generalized channel capacity is proposed under the thermodynamic theory. Furthermore, t…
We study the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay. A signal cognitive relay knows the transmit signals (but not the messages) of the sources non-causally, and tries to help them communicating with their respective destinations. We derive upper bounds and provide achievable schemes for this channel. These upper and lower bounds are shown to be tight from generalized degrees of freedom point of view. As a result, a characterization of the generalized degrees of freedom of the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay is given.
For the class of the memoryless binary-input channels which are not necessarily symmetric, we derive tight bounds on the capacity in terms of the Bhattacharyya parameter. As it turns out, the bounds derived under the symmetric channel assumption in [1] are valid for the general case as well.
Degree of freedom (DoF) region provides an approximation of capacity region in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, while sum DoF gives the scaling factor. In this correspondence, we analyse the DoF region and sum DoF for unicast layered multi-hop relay wireless networks with arbitrary number of source/destination/relay nodes, arbitrary number of hops and arbitrary number of antennas at each node. The result is valid for quite a few message topologies. We reveal the limitation on capacity of multi-hop network due to the concatenation structure and show the similarity with capacitor network…
We investigate the role of cooperation in wireless networks subject to a spatial degrees of freedom limitation. To address the worst case scenario, we consider a free-space line-of-sight type environment with no scattering and no fading. We identify three qualitatively different operating regimes that are determined by how the area of the network A, normalized with respect to the wavelength lambda, compares to the number of users n. In networks with sqrt{A}/lambda < sqrt{n}, the limitation in spatial degrees of freedom does not allow to achieve a capacity scaling better than sqrt{n} and this p…
In this paper, we investigate the generalized degrees-of-freedom (GDoF) of the asymmetric interference channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), where each transmitter has two antennas, each receiver has one antenna, and the strength for each interfering link can vary. The optimal sum-GDoF is characterized by matched converse and achievability proof. Through our results, we also reveal that in our antenna setting, the symmetric GDoF lower bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] can be elevated, and the symmetric GDoF upper bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] is tigh…
The interference relay channel (IRC) under strong interference is considered. A high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) characterization of the capacity is obtained. To this end, a new GDoF upper bound is derived based on a genie-aided approach. The achievability of the GDoF is based on cooperative interference neutralization. It turns out that the relay increases the GDoF even if the relay-destination link is weak. Moreover, in contrast to the standard interference channel, the GDoF is not a monotonically increasing function of the interference strength in the s…
In this report, we generalize Shannon's push-to-talk two-way channel (PTT-TWC) by allowing reliable full-duplex transmission as well as noisy reception in the half-duplex (PTT) mode. Viewing a PTT-TWC as two state-dependent one-way channels, we introduce a channel symmetry property pertaining to the one-way channels. Shannon's TWC capacity inner bound is shown to be tight for the generalized model under this symmetry property. We also analytically derive the capacity region, which is shown to be the convex hull of (at most) 4 rate pairs. Examples that illustrate different shapes of the capacit…
The ergodic capacity of underlay cognitive (secondary) dual-hop relaying systems is analytically investigated. Specifically, the amplify-and-forward transmission protocol is considered, while the received signals undergo multipath fading and shadowing with non-identical statistics. To efficiently describe this composite type of fading, the well-known generalized-$K$ fading model is used. New analytical expressions and quite accurate closed-form approximations regarding the ergodic capacity of the end-to-end communication are obtained, in terms of finite sum series of the Meijer's-$G$ function.…
The index coding problem studies the fundamental limit on broadcasting multiple messages to their respective receivers with different sets of side information that are represented by a directed graph. The generalized lexicographic product structure in the side information graph is introduced as a natural condition under which the corresponding index coding problem can be decomposed into multiple interacting subproblems. The capacity region is characterized in terms of the subproblem capacity regions combined in the same product structure. The proof is based on dual uses of random coding---one …
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) of the two user symmetric multiple input multiple output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) are characterized as a function of the channel strength levels and the level of channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). In this symmetric setting, each transmitter is equipped with M antennas, each receiver is equipped with N antennas, and both cross links have the same strength parameter $α$ and the same channel uncertainty parameter $β$. The main challenge resides in the proof of the outer bound which is accomplished by a generalization of the alig…
We characterize the generalized degrees of freedom of the $K$ user symmetric Gaussian interference channel where all desired links have the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and all undesired links carrying interference have the same interference-to-noise ratio, ${INR}={SNR}^α$. We find that the number of generalized degrees of freedom per user, $d(α)$, does not depend on the number of users, so that the characterization is identical to the 2 user interference channel with the exception of a singularity at $α=1$ where $d(1)=\frac{1}{K}$. The achievable schemes use multilevel coding with a neste…
In this article, we provide further asymptotic analysis to the higher-order statistics (HOS) of the channel capacity over generalized fading channels, especially by proposing simple and closed-form expressions each of which can be easily computed as a tight-bound revealing the existence of constant gap between the actual and asymptotic HOS of the channel capacity in the limit of both high- and low-signal to noise ratios (SNRs). As such, we show that these closed-form asymptotic expressions are insightful enough to comprehend the diversity gains. The mathematical formalism we followed in this a…
We develop a method to evaluate the generalized degrees of freedom (GDF), which is a key quantity of a model selection criterion, for linear regression with sparse regularization. Using the replica method, GDF is expressed by the variables that characterize the saddle point of the free energy without depending on the form of the regularization. Within the framework of replica symmetric (RS) analysis, GDF is provided with a physical meaning as the effective density of non-zero components. The validity of our method in the RS phase is supported by the consistency of our results with previous mat…
In this paper, we investigate the capacity of known interference channel, where the receiver knows the interference data but not the channel gain of the interference data. We first derive a tight upper bound for the capacity of this known-interference channel. After that, we obtain an achievable rate of the channel with a blind known interference cancellation (BKIC) scheme in closed form. We prove that the aforementioned upper bound in the high SNR regime can be approached by our achievable rate. Moreover, the achievable rate of our BKIC scheme is much larger than that of the traditional inter…
We consider the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with common and private messages. We obtain the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of this channel. We first show that a parallel Gaussian broadcast channel with unmatched sub-channels can be constructed from any given Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel by using the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) and a relaxation on the power constraint for the channel input, in a way that the capacity region of the constructed parallel channel provides an outer bound for the capacity region of the original channel. The…
We derive the capacity of the state-dependent half-duplex relay channel without source-destination link. The output of the state-dependent half-duplex relay channel depends on the randomly varying channel states of the source-relay and relay-destination links, which are known causally at all three nodes. For this channel, we prove a converse and show the achievability of the capacity based on a buffer-aided relaying protocol with adaptive link selection. This protocol chooses in each times slot one codeword to be transmitted over either the source-relay or the relay-destination channel dependi…
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) of the symmetric two-user Gaussian interference relay channel (IRC) is studied. While it is known that the relay does not increase the DoF of the IC, this is not known for the more general GDoF. For the characterization of the GDoF, new sum-capacity upper bounds and lower bounds are derived. The lower bounds are obtained by a new scheme, which is based on functional decode-and-forward (FDF). The GDoF is characterized for the regime in which the source-relay link is weaker than the interference link, which constitutes half the overall space of channel p…
Accurate fading characterization and channel capacity determination are of paramount importance in both conventional and emerging communication systems. The present work addresses the nonlinearity of the propagation medium and its effects on the channel capacity. Such fading conditions are first characterized using information theoretic measures, namely, Shannon entropy, cross entropy and relative entropy. The corresponding effects on the channel capacity with and without power adaptation are then analyzed. Closed-form expressions are derived and validated through comparisons with respective r…
Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) uses $N$ antenna elements but fewer radio frequency (RF) chains ($R$) at the transmitter. Spatial modulation and spatial multiplexing are special cases of GSM with $R=1$ and $R=N$, respectively. In GSM, apart from conveying information bits through $R$ modulation symbols, information bits are also conveyed through the indices of the $R$ active transmit antennas. In this paper, we derive lower and upper bounds on the the capacity of a ($N,M,R$)-GSM MIMO system, where $M$ is the number of receive antennas. Further, we propose a computationally efficient GSM e…
Two coexisting ad-hoc networks, primary and secondary, are considered, where each node of the primary network has a single antenna, while each node of the secondary network is equipped with multiple antennas. Using multiple antennas, each secondary transmitter uses some of its spatial transmit degrees of freedom (STDOF) to null its interference towards the primary receivers, while each secondary receiver employs interference cancelation using some of its spatial receive degrees of freedom (SRDOF). This paper derives the optimal STDOF for nulling and SRDOF for interference cancelation that maxi…
We consider the cache-aided MISO broadcast channel (BC) in which a multi-antenna transmitter serves $K$ single-antenna receivers, each equipped with a cache memory. The transmitter has access to partial knowledge of the channel state information. For a symmetric setting, in terms of channel strength levels, partial channel knowledge levels and cache sizes, we characterize the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) up to a constant multiplicative factor. The achievability scheme exploits the interplay between spatial multiplexing gains and coded-multicasting gain. On the other hand, a cut-set-ba…
We consider transmission of stationary and ergodic sources over non-ergodic composite channels with channel state information at the receiver (CSIR). Previously we introduced alternate capacity definitions to Shannon capacity, including the capacity versus outage and the expected capacity. These generalized definitions relax the constraint of Shannon capacity that all transmitted information must be decoded at the receiver. In this work alternate end-to-end distortion metrics such as the distortion versus outage and the expected distortion are introduced to relax the constraint that a single d…
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) characterization of the symmetric K-user interference channel is obtained under finite precision channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). The symmetric setting is where each cross channel is capable of carrying degrees of freedom (DoF) while each direct channel is capable of carrying 1 DoF. Remarkably, under finite precision CSIT the symmetric K-user interference channel loses all the GDoF benefits of interference alignment. The GDoF per user diminish with the number of users everywhere except in the very strong (optimal for every receiver…
Recent investigations have shown that the sum secure degrees of freedom of the Gaussian wiretap channel with a helper is $\tfrac{1}{2}$. The achievable scheme for this result is based on the real interference alignment approach. While providing a good way to show degrees of freedom results, this technique has the disadvantage of relying on the Khintchine-Groshev theorem and is therefore limited to {\it almost all channel gains}. This means that there are infinitely many channel gains, where the scheme fails. Furthermore, the real interference alignment approach cannot be used to yield stronger…
In this paper multi-antenna half-duplex and full-duplex relaying are compared from the perspective of achievable rates. Full-duplexing operation requires additional resources at the relay such as antennas and RF chains for self-interference cancellation. Using a practical model for the residual self-interference, full-duplex achievable rates and degrees of freedom are computed for the cases for which the relay has the same number of antennas or the same number of RF chains as in the half-duplex case, and compared with their half-duplex counterparts. It is shown that power scaling at the relay …
We study the performance of generalized polar (GP) codes when they are used for coding schemes involving erasure. GP codes are a family of codes which contains, among others, the standard polar codes of Arıkan and Reed-Muller codes. We derive a closed formula for the zero-undetected-error capacity $I_0^{GP}(W)$ of GP codes for a given binary memoryless symmetric (BMS) channel $W$ under the low complexity successive cancellation decoder with erasure. We show that for every $R<I_0^{GP}(W)$, there exists a generalized polar code of blocklength $N$ and of rate at least $R$ where the undetected-err…
The performance of the generalized belief propagation algorithm for computing the noiseless capacity and mutual information rates of finite-size two-dimensional and three-dimensional run-length limited constraints is investigated. For each constraint, a method is proposed to choose the basic regions and to construct the region graph. Simulation results for the capacity of different constraints as a function of the size of the channel and mutual information rates of different constraints as a function of signal-to-noise ratio are reported. Convergence to the Shannon capacity is also discussed.
We study a two-user cognitive interference channel (CIC) where one of the transmitters (primary) has knowledge of a linear combination (over an appropriate finite field) of the two information messages. We refer to this channel model as Network-Coded CIC, since the linear combination may be the result of some linear network coding scheme implemented in the backbone wired network. In this paper, we characterize the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) for the Gaussian Network-Coded CIC. For achievability, we use the novel Precoded Compute-and-Forward (PCoF) and Dirty Paper Coding (DPC), based o…
In this paper we introduce a novel performance analysis of the $η$-$μ$ generalized radio fading channels with integer value of the $μ$ fading parameter, i.e. with even number of multipath clusters. This fading model includes other fading models as special cases such as the Nakagami-m, the Hoyt, and the Rayleigh. We obtain novel unified and generic simple closed-form expressions for the average bit error rates and ergodic channel capacity in the additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN), which includes the additive Gaussian, the gamma, the Laplacian, and the impulsive noise as special c…
This work analyses the Generalized Degrees-of-Freedom (GDoF) of the 2-User Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) Broadcast Channel (BC) in the so-called Distributed CSIT regime, with application to decentralized wireless networks. This regime differs from the classical limited CSIT one in that the CSIT is not just noisy but also imperfectly shared across the transmitters (TXs). Hence, each TX precodes data on the basis of local CSIT and statistical quality information at other TXs. We derive the GDoF result and obtain the surprising outcome that by specific accounting of the pathloss information…
With the complication of future communication scenarios, most conventional signal processing technologies of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) become unreliable, which are designed based on ideal assumptions, such as Gaussian signaling and independent identically distributed (IID) channel matrices. As a result, this paper considers a generalized MU-MIMO (GMU-MIMO) system with more general assumptions, i.e., arbitrarily fixed input distributions, and general unitarily-invariant channel matrices. However, there is still no accurate capacity analysis and capacity optimal transce…
There has been major progress over the last decade in understanding the classical interference channel (IC). Recent key results show that constant bit gap capacity results can be obtained from linear deterministic models (LDMs). However, it is widely unrecognized that the time-invariant, frequency-flat cellular channel, which contains the IC as a special case, possesses some additional generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) due to multi-user operation. This was proved for the LDM cellular channel very recently but is an open question for the corresponding Gaussian counterpart. In this paper, we…
In this paper, we study achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiway relay channel (mRC) where $K$ users, each equipped with $M$ antennas, exchange messages in a pairwise manner via a common $N$-antenna relay node. % A novel and systematic way of joint beamforming design at the users and at the relay is proposed to align signals for efficient implementation of physical-layer network coding (PNC). It is shown that, when the user number $K=3$, the proposed beamforming design can achieve the DoF capacity of the considered mRC for any $(M,N)$ setups. % Fo…
The N+1 user, 1 x N single input multiple output (SIMO) Gaussian interference channel where each transmitter has a single antenna and each receiver has N antennas is studied. The symmetric capacity within O(1) is characterized for the symmetric case where all direct links have the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and all undesired links have the same interference-to-noise ratio (INR). The gap to the exact capacity is a constant which is independent of SNR and INR. To get this result, we first generalize the deterministic interference channel introduced by El Gamal and Costa to model interferen…
Capacity scaling of a large hybrid network with unit node density, consisting of $n$ wireless ad hoc nodes, base stations (BSs) equipped with multiple antennas, and one remote central processor (RCP), is analyzed when wired backhaul links between the BSs and the RCP are rate-limited. We deal with a general scenario where the number of BSs, the number of antennas at each BS, and the backhaul link rate can scale at arbitrary rates relative to $n$ (i.e., we introduce three scaling parameters). We first derive the minimum backhaul link rate required to achieve the same capacity scaling law as in t…
The effective capacity of communication systems over generalized $κ$-$μ$ shadowed fading channels is investigated in this letter. A novel and analytical expression for the exact effective capacity is derived in terms of extended generalized bivariate Meijer's-$G$ function. To intuitively reveal the impact of the system and channel parameters on the effective capacity, we also derive closed-form expressions for the effective capacity in the asymptotically high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Our results demonstrate that the effective capacity is a monotonically increasing function of channel fadi…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has drawn tremendous attention, being a potential candidate for the spectrum access technology for the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communications standards. Most research related to NOMA focuses on the system performance from Shannon's capacity perspective, which, although a critical system design criterion, fails to quantify the effect of delay constraints imposed by future wireless applications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) two-user downlink NOMA system, in terms of the link-lay…
We study the generalized degrees of freedom (gDoF) of the block-fading noncoherent 2-user interference channel (IC) with a coherence time of T symbol durations and symmetric fading statistics. We demonstrate that a natural training-based scheme for the noncoherent IC, is suboptimal in several regimes. We study and analyze several alternate schemes: the first is a new noncoherent scheme using rate-splitting. We also consider a scheme that treats interference-as-noise (TIN) and a time division multiplexing (TDM) scheme. We show that a standard training-based scheme for the noncoherent IC is outp…
In this paper it is shown that the nonfeedback capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) additive Gaussian noise (AGN) channels, when the noise is nonstationary and unstable, is characterized by an asymptotic optimization problem that involves, a generalized matrix algebraic Riccati equation (ARE) of filtering theory, and a matrix Lyapunov equation of stability theory of Gaussian systems. Furthermore, conditions are identified such that, the characterization of nonfeedback capacity corresponds to the uniform asymptotic per unit time limit, over all initial distributions, of the charact…
This paper provides an upper-bound for the capacity of the underwater acoustic (UWA) channel with dominant noise sources and generalized fading environments. Previous works have shown that UWA channel noise statistics are not necessary Gaussian, especially in a shallow water environment which is dominated by impulsive noise sources. In this case, noise is best represented by the Generalized Gaussian (GG) noise model with a shaping parameter $β$. On the other hand, fading in the UWA channel is generally represented using an $α$-$μ$ distribution, which is a generalization of a wide range of well…
Unified exact average capacity results for L-branch coherent diversity receivers including equal-gain combining (EGC) and maximal-ratio combining (MRC) are not known. This paper develops a novel generic framework for the capacity analysis of $L$-branch EGC/MRC over generalized fading channels. The framework is used to derive new results for the Gamma shadowed generalized Nakagami-m fading model which can be a suitable model for the fading environments encountered by high frequency (60 GHz and above) communications. The mathematical formalism is illustrated with some selected numerical and simu…
A discrete memoryless generalized multiple access channel (GMAC) with confidential messages is studied, where two users attempt to transmit common information to a destination and each user also has private (confidential) information intended for the destination. This channel generalizes the multiple access channel (MAC) in that the two users also receive channel outputs. It is assumed that each user views the other user as a wire-tapper, and wishes to keep its confidential information as secret as possible from the other user. The level of secrecy of the confidential information is measured b…
The effective capacity (EC) has been recently established as a rigorous alternative to the classical Shannon's ergodic capacity since it accounts for the delay constraints imposed by future wireless applications and their impact on the overall system performance. This paper presents a novel moment generating function (MGF)-based framework for the unified EC performance analysis of a generic Lp-norm diversity combining scheme operating over arbitrary and correlated generalized fading channels and a maximum delay constraint. The Lp-norm diversity is a generic diversity structure which includes a…
Conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) mainly focused on Gaussian signaling, independent and identically distributed (IID) channels, and a limited number of users. It will be laborious to cope with the heterogeneous requirements in next-generation wireless communications, such as various transmission data, complicated communication scenarios, and massive user access. Therefore, this paper studies a generalized MU-MIMO (GMU-MIMO) system with more practical constraints, i.e., non-Gaussian signaling, non-IID channel, and massive users and antennas. These generalized assu…
Protograph low-density-parity-check (LDPC) are considered to design near-capacity low-rate codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC) and binary additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channel. For protographs with degree-one variable nodes and doubly-generalized LDPC (DGLDPC) codes, conditions are derived to ensure equality of bit-error threshold and block-error threshold. Using this condition, low-rate codes with block-error threshold close to capacity are designed and shown to have better error rate performance than other existing codes.
It is well known that the classical 2 user Gaussian interference channel has only 1 degree of freedom (DoF), which can be achieved by orthogonal time division among the 2 users. It is also known that the use of conventional relays, which introduce a processing delay of at least one symbol duration relative to the direct paths between sources and destinations, does not increase the DoF of the 2 user interference channel. The use of instantaneous relays (relays-without-delay) has been explored for the single user point-to-point setting and it is known that such a relay, even with memoryless forw…
This paper fully determines the degree-of-freedom (DoF) region of two-user interference channels with arbitrary number of transmit and receive antennas and isotropic fading, where the channel state information is available to the receivers but not to the transmitters. The result characterizes the capacity region to the first order of the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the high-SNR regime. The DoF region is achieved using random Gaussian codebooks independent of the channel states. Hence the DoF gain due to beamforming and interference alignment is completely lost in absence of…
