We characterize the generalized degrees of freedom of the $K$ user symmetric Gaussian interference channel where all desired links have the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and all undesired links carrying interference have the same interference-to-noise ratio, ${INR}={SNR}^α$. We find that the number of generalized degrees of freedom per user, $d(α)$, does not depend on the number of users, so that the characterization is identical to the 2 user interference channel with the exception of a singularity at $α=1$ where $d(1)=\frac{1}{K}$. The achievable schemes use multilevel coding with a nested lattice structure that opens the possibility that the sum of interfering signals can be decoded at a receiver even though the messages carried by the interfering signals are not decodable.
The interference relay channel (IRC) under strong interference is considered. A high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) characterization of the capacity is obtained. To this end, a new GDoF upper bound is derived based on a genie-aided approach. The achievability of the GDoF is based on cooperative interference neutralization. It turns out that the relay increases the GDoF even if the relay-destination link is weak. Moreover, in contrast to the standard interference channel, the GDoF is not a monotonically increasing function of the interference strength in the s…
While the best known outerbound for the K user interference channel states that there cannot be more than K/2 degrees of freedom, it has been conjectured that in general the constant interference channel with any number of users has only one degree of freedom. In this paper, we explore the spatial degrees of freedom per orthogonal time and frequency dimension for the K user wireless interference channel where the channel coefficients take distinct values across frequency slots but are fixed in time. We answer five closely related questions. First, we show that K/2 degrees of freedom can be ach…
We study a three-node network with a full-duplex base-station communicating with one uplink and one downlink half-duplex node. In this network, both self-interference and inter-node interference are present. We use an antenna-theory-based channel model to study the spatial degrees of freedom of such network, and study if and how much does spatial isolation outperforms time-division (i.e. half-duplex) counterpart. Using degrees of freedom analysis, we show that spatial isolation outperforms time division, unless the angular spread of the objects that scatters to the intended users is overlapped…
This paper studies two-user MIMO interference channel with isotropic fading. We assume that users are equipped with arbitrary number of antennas and the channel state information (CSI) is available at receivers only. An outer bound is obtained for the degree of freedom region, which suggests the loss of degrees of freedom due to the lack of CSI at transmitters under many circumstances.
We show that the 2x2x2 interference channel, i.e., the multihop interference channel formed by concatenation of two 2-user interference channels achieves the min-cut outer bound value of 2 DoF, for almost all values of channel coefficients, for both time-varying or fixed channel coefficients. The key to this result is a new idea, called aligned interference neutralization, that provides a way to align interference terms over each hop in a manner that allows them to be cancelled over the air at the last hop.
In this paper, we consider the K-user interference channel with partial cooperation, where a strict subset of the K users cooperate. For the K-user interference channel with cooperating subsets of length M, the outer bound of the total degrees of freedom is KM/(M+1). In this paper, we propose a signal space-based interference alignment scheme that proves the achievability of these degrees of freedom for the case K=M+2. The proposed scheme consists of a design for the transmit precoding matrices and a processing algorithm which we call the Successive Interference Alignment (SIA) algorithm. The …
In this work, we consider achievable secrecy rates for symmetric $K$-user ($K \ge 3$) interference channels with confidential messages. We find that nested lattice codes and layered coding are useful in providing secrecy for these channels. Achievable secrecy rates are derived for very strong interference. In addition, we derive the secure degrees of freedom for a range of channel parameters. As a by-product of our approach, we also demonstrate that nested lattice codes are useful for K-user symmetric interference channels without secrecy constraints in that they yield higher degrees of freedo…
We study the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay. A signal cognitive relay knows the transmit signals (but not the messages) of the sources non-causally, and tries to help them communicating with their respective destinations. We derive upper bounds and provide achievable schemes for this channel. These upper and lower bounds are shown to be tight from generalized degrees of freedom point of view. As a result, a characterization of the generalized degrees of freedom of the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay is given.
For a $K$-user interference channel with $M$ antenna at each transmitter and each receiver, the maximum total DoF of this channel has been previously determined to be $\max \sum_{k=1}^K d_k = MK/2$. However, the DoF region remains to be unknown. In this short note, through a simple time-sharing argument, we obtain the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of this channel.
We provide innerbound and outerbound for the total number of degrees of freedom of the $K$ user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M$ antennas at each transmitter and $N$ antennas at each receiver if the channel coefficients are time-varying and drawn from a continuous distribution. The bounds are tight when the ratio $\frac{\max(M,N)}{\min(M,N)}=R$ is equal to an integer. For this case, we show that the total number of degrees of freedom is equal to $\min(M,N)K$ if $K \leq R$ and $\min(M,N)\frac{R}{R+1}K$ if $K > R$. Achievability is based on interferenc…
We explore the interplay between interference, cooperation and connectivity in heterogeneous wireless interference networks. Specifically, we consider a 4-user locally-connected interference network with pairwise clustered decoding and show that its degrees of freedom (DoF) are bounded above by 12/5. Interestingly, when compared to the corresponding fully connected setting which is known to have 8/3 DoF, the locally connected network is only missing interference-carrying links, but still has lower DoF, i.e., eliminating these interference-carrying links reduces the DoF. The 12/5 DoF outer boun…
The K-user flat fading MIMO interference channel with J instantaneous relays (KICJR) is considered. In the KICJR, the effective channel between sources and destinations including the relays has certain structure and is non-generic. For non-generic channels, the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) is still unknown. Lee and Wang showed that by using the aligned interference neutralization scheme 3/2 degrees of freedom is achievable in a 2IC1R system, which is 50% more than the 2-user interference channel. But the DoF performance and achievable schemes for other KICJR networks are not investigate…
In this paper, we study the effect of feedback on two-user MIMO interference channels. The capacity region of MIMO interference channels with feedback is characterized within a constant number of bits, where this constant is independent of the channel matrices. Further, it is shown that the capacity region of a MIMO interference channel with feedback and its reciprocal interference channel are within a constant number of bits. Finally, the generalized degrees of freedom region for the MIMO interference channel with feedback is characterized.
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) characterization of the symmetric K-user interference channel is obtained under finite precision channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). The symmetric setting is where each cross channel is capable of carrying degrees of freedom (DoF) while each direct channel is capable of carrying 1 DoF. Remarkably, under finite precision CSIT the symmetric K-user interference channel loses all the GDoF benefits of interference alignment. The GDoF per user diminish with the number of users everywhere except in the very strong (optimal for every receiver…
In this work, we prove that a positive secure degree of freedom is achievable for a large class of Gaussian channels as long as the channel is not degraded and the channel is fully connected. This class includes the MAC wire-tap channel, the 2-user interference channel with confidential messages, the 2-user interference channel with an external eavesdropper. Best known achievable schemes to date for these channels use Gaussian signaling. In this work, we show that structured codes outperform Gaussian random codes at high SNR when channel gains are real numbers.
This paper fully determines the degree-of-freedom (DoF) region of two-user interference channels with arbitrary number of transmit and receive antennas and isotropic fading, where the channel state information is available to the receivers but not to the transmitters. The result characterizes the capacity region to the first order of the logarithm of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the high-SNR regime. The DoF region is achieved using random Gaussian codebooks independent of the channel states. Hence the DoF gain due to beamforming and interference alignment is completely lost in absence of…
In this letter, we present the first characterization for the achievable Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) by Blind Interference Alignment (BIA) using staggered antenna switching in the $K$-user Gaussian Interference Channel. In such scheme, each transmitter is equipped with one conventional antenna and each receiver is equipped with one reconfigurable (multi-mode) antenna. Assuming that the channel is known to the receivers only, we show that BIA can achieve $\frac{2K}{K+2}$ DoF, which surpasses the sum DoF achieved by previously known interference alignment schemes with delayed channel state informat…
The $K$-user single-input single-output (SISO) AWGN interference channel and $2\times K$ SISO AWGN X channel are considered where the transmitters have the delayed channel state information (CSI) through noiseless feedback links. Multi-phase transmission schemes are proposed for both channels which possess novel ingredients, namely, multi-phase partial interference nulling, distributed interference management via user scheduling, and distributed higher-order symbol generation. The achieved degrees of freedom (DoF) values are greater than the best previously known DoFs for both channels with de…
A network consisting of a point-to-point (P2P) link and a multiple access channel (MAC) sharing the same medium is considered. The resulting interference network, with three transmitters and two receivers is studied from degrees of freedom (DoF) perspective, with and without cognition. Several cognition variants are examined. Namely, the setup is studied with (1) no cognitive transmitters, (2) a cognitive P2P transmitter, (3) one cognitive MAC transmitter, and (4) with two cognitive MAC transmitters. It is shown that having a cognitive P2P transmitter does not bring any DoF gain to the network…
We consider a single hop wireless X network with $K$ transmitters and $J$ receivers, all with single antenna. Each transmitter conveys for each receiver an independent message. The channel is assumed to have constant coefficients. We develop interference alignment scheme for this setup and derived several achievable degrees of freedom regions. We show that in some cases, the derived region meets a previous outer bound and are hence the DoF region. For our achievability schemes, we divide each message into streams and use real interference alignment on the streams. Several previous results on t…
We analyze the gains of opportunistic communication in multiuser interference channels. Consider a fully connected $n$-user Gaussian interference channel. At each time instance only $K\leq n$ transmitters are allowed to be communicating with their respective receivers and the remaining $(n-K)$ transmitter-receiver pairs remain inactive. For finite $n$, if the transmitters can acquire channel state information (CSI) and if all channel gains are bounded away from zero and infinity, the seminal results on interference alignment establish that for any $K$ {\em arbitrary} active pairs the total num…
This paper gives the approximate capacity region of a two-user MIMO interference channel with limited receiver cooperation, where the gap between the inner and outer bounds is in terms of the total number of receive antennas at the two receivers and is independent of the actual channel values. The approximate capacity region is then used to find the degrees of freedom region. For the special case of symmetric interference channels, we also find the amount of receiver cooperation in terms of the backhaul capacity beyond which the degrees of freedom do not improve. Further, the generalized degre…
We investigate the secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) of the K-user MIMO multiple access (MAC) and the two user MIMO interference channel. An unknown number of eavesdroppers are trying to decode the messages sent by the transmitters. Each eavesdropper is equipped with a number of antennas less than or equal to a known value NE. The legitimate transmitters and receivers are assumed to have global channel knowledge. We present the sum SDoF of the two user MIMO interference channel. We derive an upperbound on the sum SDoF of the K-user MAC channel and present an achievable scheme that partially mee…
This paper studies the K-user Gaussian interference channel with secrecy constraints. Two distinct network models, namely the interference channel with confidential messages and the one with an external eavesdropper, are analyzed. Using interference alignment along with secrecy pre-coding at each transmitter, it is shown that each user in the network can achieve non-zero secure Degrees of Freedoms (DoFs) in both scenarios. In particular, the proposed coding scheme achieves (K-2)/(2K-2) secure DoFs for each user in the interference channel with confidential messages model, and (K-2)/2K secure D…
This work investigates the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the K-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel (IC) with imperfect delayed channel state information at the transmitters (dCSIT). For this setting, new DoF inner bonds are provided, and benchmarked with cooperation-based outer bounds. The achievability result is based on a precoding scheme that aligns the interfering received signals through time, exploiting the concept of Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA). The proposed approach outperforms all previous known schemes. Furthermore, we study the proposed scheme …
In this paper, we investigate the generalized degrees-of-freedom (GDoF) of the asymmetric interference channel with delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), where each transmitter has two antennas, each receiver has one antenna, and the strength for each interfering link can vary. The optimal sum-GDoF is characterized by matched converse and achievability proof. Through our results, we also reveal that in our antenna setting, the symmetric GDoF lower bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] can be elevated, and the symmetric GDoF upper bound in [Mohanty et. al, TIT 2019] is tigh…
It is well known that the classical 2 user Gaussian interference channel has only 1 degree of freedom (DoF), which can be achieved by orthogonal time division among the 2 users. It is also known that the use of conventional relays, which introduce a processing delay of at least one symbol duration relative to the direct paths between sources and destinations, does not increase the DoF of the 2 user interference channel. The use of instantaneous relays (relays-without-delay) has been explored for the single user point-to-point setting and it is known that such a relay, even with memoryless forw…
The degrees-of-freedom of a K-user Gaussian interference channel (GIFC) has been defined to be the multiple of (1/2)log_2(P) at which the maximum sum of achievable rates grows with increasing P. In this paper, we establish that the degrees-of-freedom of three or more user, real, scalar GIFCs, viewed as a function of the channel coefficients, is discontinuous at points where all of the coefficients are non-zero rational numbers. More specifically, for all K>2, we find a class of K-user GIFCs that is dense in the GIFC parameter space for which K/2 degrees-of-freedom are exactly achievable, and w…
We explore the capacity and generalized degrees of freedom of the two-user Gaussian X channel, i.e. a generalization of the 2 user interference channel where there is an independent message from each transmitter to each receiver. There are three main results in this paper. First, we characterize the sum capacity of the deterministic X channel model under a symmetric setting. Second, we characterize the generalized degrees of freedom of the Gaussian X channel under a similar symmetric model. Third, we extend the noisy interference capacity characterization previously obtained for the interferen…
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) of the two user symmetric multiple input multiple output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) are characterized as a function of the channel strength levels and the level of channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT). In this symmetric setting, each transmitter is equipped with M antennas, each receiver is equipped with N antennas, and both cross links have the same strength parameter $α$ and the same channel uncertainty parameter $β$. The main challenge resides in the proof of the outer bound which is accomplished by a generalization of the alig…
In this paper, we propose a novel genie chains approach to obtain information theoretic degrees of freedom (DoF) outer bounds for MIMO wireless interference networks. This new approach creates a chain of mappings from genie signals provided to a receiver to the exposed signal spaces at that receiver, which then serve as the genie signals for the next receiver in the chain subject to certain linear independence requirements, essentially converting an information theoretic DoF outer bound problem into a linear algebra problem. Several applications of the genie chains approach are presented.
We investigate the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) Region of a cellular network, where the cells can have overlapping areas. Within an overlapping area, the mobile users can access multiple base stations. We consider a case where there are two base stations both equipped with multiple antennas. The mobile stations are all equipped with single antenna and each mobile station can belong to either a single cell or both cells. We completely characterize the DoF region for the uplink channel assuming that global channel state information is available at the transmitters. The achievability scheme is based …
We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) regions of two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Z and full interference channels in this paper. We assume that the receivers always have perfect channel state information. We derive the DoF region of Z interference channel with channel state information at transmitter (CSIT). For full interference channel without CSIT, the DoF region has been obtained in previous work except for a special case M1< N1<min(M2,N2), where M_i and N_i are the number of transmit and receive antennas of user i, respectively. We show that for this case the DoF regions of…
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) of the symmetric two-user Gaussian interference relay channel (IRC) is studied. While it is known that the relay does not increase the DoF of the IC, this is not known for the more general GDoF. For the characterization of the GDoF, new sum-capacity upper bounds and lower bounds are derived. The lower bounds are obtained by a new scheme, which is based on functional decode-and-forward (FDF). The GDoF is characterized for the regime in which the source-relay link is weaker than the interference link, which constitutes half the overall space of channel p…
This paper investigates the degrees of freedom of the interference channel in the presence of a dedicated MIMO relay. The relay is used to manage the interference at the receivers. It is assumed that all nodes including the relay have channel state information only for their own links and that the relay has M (greater than or equal to K) antennas in a K-user network. We pose the question: What is the benefit of exploiting the direct links from the source to destinations compared to a simpler two-hop strategy. To answer this question, we first establish the degrees of freedom of the interferenc…
In this letter, we propose the interference cancellation through interference alignment at the downlink of cognitive cellular networks. Interference alignment helps the spatial resources to be shared among primary and secondary cells and thus, it can provide higher degrees of freedom through interference cancellation. We derive and depict the achievable degrees of freedom. We also analyse and calculate the achievable sum rates applying water-filling optimal power allocation.
We study the sum degrees of freedom (DoF) of interference channels with hybrid beam-forming in which hybrid beam-forming composed of analog and digital precodings is employed at each node. For the two-user case, we completely characterize the sum DoF for an arbitrary number of antennas and RF chains by developing an achievable scheme optimized for the hybrid beam-forming structure and deriving its matching upper bound. For a general K-user case, we focus on a symmetric case and obtain lower and upper bounds on the sum DoF, which are tight for certain cases. The results show that hybrid beam-fo…
We consider a single hop interference network with $K$ transmitters and $J$ receivers, all having $M$ antennas. Each transmitter emits an independent message and each receiver requests an arbitrary subset of the messages. This generalizes the well-known $K$-user $M$-antenna interference channel, where each message is requested by a unique receiver. For our setup, we derive the degrees of freedom (DoF) region. The achievability scheme generalizes the interference alignment schemes proposed by Cadambe and Jafar. In particular, we achieve general points in the DoF region by using multiple base ve…
This paper studies the interference channel with a cognitive relay (ICCR) under delayed feedback. Three types of delayed feedback are studied: delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), delayed output feedback, and delayed Shannon feedback. Outer bounds are derived for the DoF region of the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ICCR with delayed feedback as well as without feedback. For the single-input single-output (SISO) scenario, optimal schemes are proposed based on retrospective interference alignment. It is shown that while a cognitive relay without feedback c…
The Maddah-Ali and Tse (MAT) scheme is a linear precoding strategy that exploits Interference Alignment and perfect, but delayed, channel state information at the transmitters (delayed CSIT), improving the degrees of freedom (DoF) that can be achieved for the broadcast channel (BC). Since its appearance, many works have extended the concept of Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA) to other multi-user channel configurations. However, little is known about the broadcast channel with multiple cells, i.e. the interference broadcast channel (IBC). In this work, the DoF are studied for the $K$-…
This paper considers a K-user Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) Interference Channel (IC), where the channel state information obtained by the transmitters (CSIT) is perfect, but completely outdated. A Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA) using such delayed CSIT was proposed by the authors of [1] for the MISO Broadcast Channel (BC), but the extension to the MISO IC is a non-trivial step as each transmitter only has the message intended for the corresponding user. Recently, [7] focused on a Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) IC and solved such bottleneck by inventing a distributed higher…
Stotz et al., 2016, reported a sufficient (injectivity) condition for each user in a K-user single-antenna constant interference channel to achieve 1/2 degree of freedom. The present paper proves that this condition is necessary as well and hence provides an equivalence characterization of interference channel matrices allowing full degrees of freedom.
Channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters (CSIT) is of importance for interference alignment schemes to achieve the optimal degrees of freedom (DoF) for wireless networks. This paper investigates the impact of half-duplex relays on the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the X channel and the interference channel when the transmitters are blind in the sense that no ISIT is available. In particular, it is shown that adding relay nodes with global CSI to the communication model is sufficient to recover the DoF that is the optimal for these models with global CSI at the transmitters. The relay …
In this paper, we characterize the degrees of freedom (DoF) for $K $-user $M \times 1 $ multiple-input single-output interference channels with reconfigurable antennas which have multiple preset modes at the receivers, assuming linear coding strategies in the absence of channel state information at the transmitters, i.e., blind interference alignment. Our linear DoF converse builds on the lemma that if a set of transmit symbols is aligned at their common unintended receivers, those symbols must have independent signal subspace at their corresponding receivers. This lemma arises from the inhere…
We study a two-user cognitive interference channel (CIC) where one of the transmitters (primary) has knowledge of a linear combination (over an appropriate finite field) of the two information messages. We refer to this channel model as Network-Coded CIC, since the linear combination may be the result of some linear network coding scheme implemented in the backbone wired network. In this paper, we characterize the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) for the Gaussian Network-Coded CIC. For achievability, we use the novel Precoded Compute-and-Forward (PCoF) and Dirty Paper Coding (DPC), based o…
We present a necessary and sufficient condition for $1/2$ degree of freedom for each user in constant $K$-user single-antenna interference channels. This condition applies to all channel topologies, i.e., to fully-connected channels as well as channels that have individual links absent, reflected by corresponding zeros in the channel matrix. Moreover, it captures the essence of interference alignment by virtue of being expressed in terms of a generic injectivity condition that guarantees separability of signal and interference. Finally, we provide codebook constructions achieving $1/2$ degree …
In this paper, we consider the problem of the interference alignment for the $K$-user SISO interference channel with blind channel state information at transmitters (CSIT). Our achievement in contrast to popular $K-$user interference alignment (IA) scheme has more practical notions. In this case every receiver is equipped with one reconfigurable antenna which tries to place its desired signal in a subspace which is linearly independent from interference signals. We show that if the channel values are known to the receivers only, the sum degrees-of-freedom (DOF) rate region of the linear BIA wi…
We study the generalized degrees of freedom (gDoF) of the block-fading noncoherent 2-user interference channel (IC) with a coherence time of T symbol durations and symmetric fading statistics. We demonstrate that a natural training-based scheme for the noncoherent IC, is suboptimal in several regimes. We study and analyze several alternate schemes: the first is a new noncoherent scheme using rate-splitting. We also consider a scheme that treats interference-as-noise (TIN) and a time division multiplexing (TDM) scheme. We show that a standard training-based scheme for the noncoherent IC is outp…
The challenge to in-band full-duplex wireless communication is managing self-interference. Many designs have employed spatial isolation mechanisms, such as shielding or multi-antenna beamforming, to isolate the self-interference wave from the receiver. Such spatial isolation methods are effective, but by confining the transmit and receive signals to a subset of the available space, the full spatial resources of the channel be under-utilized, expending a cost that may nullify the net benefit of operating in full-duplex mode. In this paper we leverage an antenna-theory-based channel model to ana…
Opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) exploits channel randomness and multiuser diversity by user selection. For OIA the transmitter needs channel state information (CSI), which is usually measured on the receiver side and sent to the transmitter side via a feedback channel. Lee and Choi show that $d$ degrees of freedom (DoF) per transmitter are achievable in a 3-cell MIMO interference channel assuming perfect real-valued feedback. However, the feedback of a real-valued variable still requires infinite rate. In this paper, we investigate 1-bit quantization for opportunistic interference a…
The two-user multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) interference and cognitive radio channels are studied under the assumption of no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) from the degrees of freedom (DoF) region perspective. With $M_i$ and $N_i$ denoting the number of antennas at transmitter $i$ and receiver $i$ respectively, the DoF regions of the MIMO interference channel were recently characterized by Huang et al., Zhu and Guo, and by the authors of this paper for all values of numbers of antennas except when $\min(M_1,N_1) > N_2 > M_2$ (or $\min(M_2,N_2) > N_1 > M_1$). This latter …
This paper studies the problem of sum-secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) of the (M,M,N,N) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel with local output feedback, so as to build an information-theoretic foundation and provide practical transmission schemes for 6G-enabled vehicles-to-vehicles (V2V). For this problem, we propose two novel transmission schemes, i.e., the interference decoding scheme and the interference alignment scheme, and thus establish a sum-SDoF lower bound. In particular, to optimize the phase duration, we analyze the security and decoding constraints and formul…
This paper studies a symmetric K user Gaussian interference channel with K transmitters and K receivers. A "very strong" interference regime is derived for this channel setup. A "very strong" interference regime is one where the capacity region of the interference channel is the same as the capacity region of the channel with no interference. In this regime, the interference can be perfectly canceled by all the receivers without incurring any rate penalties. A "very strong" interference condition for an example symmetric K user deterministic interference channel is also presented.
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the asymmetric multi-input-multi-output interference broadcast channel (MIMO-IBC). By introducing a notion of connection pattern chain, we generalize the genie chain proposed in [11] to derive and prove the necessary condition of IA feasibility for asymmetric MIMO-IBC, which is denoted as irreducible condition. It is necessary for both linear interference alignment (IA) and asymptotic IA feasibility in MIMO-IBC with arbitrary configurations. In a special class of asymmetric two-cell MIMOIBC, the irreducible condition is proved to be the s…
Interference alignment is a key technique for communication scenarios with multiple interfering links. In several such scenarios, interference alignment was used to characterize the degrees-of-freedom of the channel. However, these degrees-of-freedom capacity approximations are often too weak to make accurate predictions about the behavior of channel capacity at finite signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The aim of this paper is to significantly strengthen these results by showing that interference alignment can be used to characterize capacity to within a constant gap. We focus on real, time-invar…
Interference alignment allows multiple users to share the same frequency and time resource in a wireless communications system. At present, two performance bounds, in terms of degree of freedom, have been proposed. One is for infinite-dimension extension and the other is for MIMO systems. This paper provides an understanding of the MIMO bound by examining its proofs and shows that it does not apply to a more practical case: MIMO-OFDM. Several approaches are proposed in searching for DoF bounds for systems such as finite-dimension time extension and MIMO-OFDM systems.
In this paper, we consider the problem of the interference alignment for the $K$-user SISO interference channel (IC) with blind channel state information (CSI) at transmitters. Our achievement in contrast to the traditional $K-$user interference alignment (IA) scheme has more practical notions. In this case, every receiver is equipped with one reconfigurable antenna which tries to place its desired signal in a subspace which is linearly independent of interference signals. We show that if the channel values are known to the receivers only, the sum degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of the linear blind I…
We investigate the benefits of relays in multi-user wireless networks with bursty user traffic, where intermittent data traffic restricts the users to bursty transmissions. To this end, we study a two-user bursty MIMO Gaussian interference channel with a relay, where two Bernoulli random states govern the bursty user traffic. We show that an in-band relay can provide a degrees of freedom (DoF) gain in this bursty channel. This beneficial role of in-band relays in the bursty channel is in direct contrast to their role in the non-bursty channel which is not as significant to provide a DoF gain. …
The degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the 2-user multiple-antenna or MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) interference channel (IC) is studied under fast fading and the assumption of {\em delayed} channel state information (CSI) wherein all terminals know all (or certain) channel matrices perfectly, but with a delay, and each receiver in addition knows its own incoming channels instantaneously. The general MIMO IC is considered with an arbitrary number of antennas at each of the four terminals. Dividing it into several classes depending on the relation between the numbers of antennas at the…
