The method of screening and renormalization is used to include the Coulomb interaction between the charged particles in the description of few-body nuclear reactions. Calculations are done in the framework of Faddeev-type equations in momentum-space. The reliability of the method is demonstrated. The Coulomb effect on observables is discussed.
We demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the Coulomb-Sturmian separable expansion method for generating accurate solutions of the Faddeev equations. Results obtained with this method are reported for several benchmark cases of bosonic and fermionic three-body systems. Correct bound-state results in agreement with the ones established in the literature are achieved for short-range interactions. We outline the formalism for the treatment of three-body Coulomb systems and present a bound-state calculation for a three-boson system interacting via Coulomb plus short-range forces. The corres…
We extend our approach to incorporate the proton-proton (pp) Coulomb force into the three-nucleon (3N) momentum-space Faddeev calculations of elastic proton-deuteron (pd) scattering and breakup to the case when also a three-nucleon force (3NF) is acting. In addition we formulate that approach in the application to electron- and gamma-induced reactions on 3He. The main new ingredient is a 3-dimensional screened pp Coulomb t-matrix obtained by a numerical solution of a 3-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger equation (LSE). The resulting equations have the same structure as the Faddeev equations which …
We extend our approach to incorporate the proton-proton (pp) Coulomb force into the three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev calculations from elastic proton-deuteron (pd) scattering to the breakup process. The main new ingredient is a 3-dimensional screened pp Coulomb t-matrix obtained by a numerical solution of the 3-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger equation. We demonstrate numerically that the proton-deuteron breakup observables can be determined from the resulting on-shell 3N amplitudes increasing the screening radius. However, contrary to the pd elastic scattering, the screening limit exists only after r…
The repulsive Coulomb force poses severe challenges when describing $(d, p)$ reactions for highly charged nuclei as a three-body problem. Casting Faddeev-AGS equations in a Coulomb basis avoids introducing screening of the Coulomb force. However, momentum space partial-wave $t$-matrix elements need to be evaluated in this basis. When those $t$-matrices are separable, the evaluation requires the folding of a form factor, depending on one momentum variable, with a momentum space partial-wave Coulomb function, which has a singular behavior at the external momentum $q$. We developed an improved re…
We propose a novel approach to incorporate the proton-proton (pp) Coulomb force into the three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev calculations. The main new ingredient is a 3-dimensional screened pp Coulomb t-matrix obtained by a numerical solution of the 3-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger (LS) equation. We demonstrate numerically and provide analytical insight that the elastic proton-deuteron (pd) observables can be determined directly from the resulting on shell 3N amplitude increasing the screening radius. The screening limit exists without the need of renormalisation not only for observables but for the e…
A modified version of the Faddeev three-body equation to accommodate the Coulomb interaction, which was used in the study of three-nucleon bound states, is applied to the proton-deuteron scattering problem at energies below the three-body breakup threshold. A formal derivation of the equation in a time-independent scattering theory is given. Numerical results for phase shift parameters are presented to be compared with those of another methods and results of the phase shift analysis. Differential cross sections and nucleon analyzing powers are calculated with the effects of three-nucleon force…
Momentum space three-body Faddeev-like equations are used to calculate elastic, transfer and charge exchange reactions resulting from the scattering of deuterons on 12C and 16O or protons on 13C and 17O; 12C and 16O are treated as inert cores. All possible reactions are calculated in the framework of the same model space. Comparison with previous calculations based on approximate methods used in nuclear reaction theory is discussed.
Theoretical description of reactions in general, and the theory for $(d,p)$ reactions, in particular, needs to advance into the new century. Here deuteron stripping processes off a target nucleus consisting of ${A}$ nucleons are treated within the framework of the few-body integral equations theory. The generalized Faddeev equations in the AGS form, which take into account the target excitations, with realistic optical potentials provide the most advanced and complete description of the deuteron stripping. The main problem in practical application of such equations is the screening of the Coul…
A novel method for calculating resonances in three-body Coulombic systems is presented. The Faddeev-Merkuriev integral equations are solved by applying the Coulomb-Sturmian separable expansion method. To show the power of the method we calculate resonances of the three-$α$ and the $H^-$ systems.
The set of Faddeev and Lippmann--Schwinger integral equations for three-body systems involving Coulomb interactions deduced from a ``three-potential'' picture are shown to be compact for all energies and a method of solution is given.
The polarization transfer coefficient $K_y^{y'}$ for the $^2$H$(\vec{d}, \vec{p})^3$H reaction at energies $E_{\rm lab.} = 30$, 50, 70, and 90keV is calculated using the four-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky equation. We employ a separable type of the Paris potential. The experimental data [Phys. Rev. {\bf C64}, 047601 (2001)] agrees with our solution at the scattering angle $θ_{\rm c.m.}=0^\circ$, and there is no discrepancy pointed out in that paper. We found that the $K_y^{y'}$ is sensitive to the incident deuteron energy at this angle.
We present a method to integrate predictions from a theoretical model of a reaction with three bodies in the final state over the region of phase space covered by a given experiment. The method takes into account the true experimental acceptance, as well as variations of detector efficiency, and eliminates the need for a Monte-Carlo simulation of the detector setup. The method is applicable to kinematically complete experiments. Examples for the use of this method include several polarization observables in dp break-up at 270 MeV. The calculations are carried out in the Faddeev framework with …
In this paper, I prove that the sub-Coulomb $A(d,p)B$ reaction amplitude, which is a solution of the three-body Faddeev equations in the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas (AGS) form, is peripheral if a peripheral is the corresponding DWBA amplitude. Hence the Faddeev's reaction amplitude for the sub-Coulomb $A(d,p)B$ reactions can also be parametrized in terms of the ANC of the $(n\,A)$ bound state. First, I consider the original AGS equations with separable potentials and prove that such equations are peripheral at sub-Coulomb energies. After that, the two-particle AGS equations are derived for the gen…
We address the formation of correlations in a general nonequilibrium situation. As an example we calculate the formation of light composite particles in a heavy ion collision. In particular we study the formation of deuterons via three-body reactions in some detail. To calculate the relevant reaction rates we solve the Faddeev equation which is consistently modified to include the self energy corrections and Pauli blocking factors due to surrounding nucleons. We find that the time scales of the reaction as well as the number of emitted deuterons change as medium dependent rates are used in the…
We propose a novel method for calculating resonances in three-body Coulombic systems. The method is based on the solution of the set of Faddeev and Lippmann-Schwinger integral equations, which are designed for solving the three-body Coulomb problem. The resonances of the three-body system are defined as the complex-energy solutions of the homogeneous Faddeev integral equations. We show how the kernels of the integral equations should be continued analytically in order that we get resonances. As a numerical illustration a toy model for the three-$α$ system is solved.
In this lecture we aim to present a formalism based on Faddeev-like equations for describing nuclear three-cluster reactions that include elastic, transfer and breakup channels. Two different techniques based on momentum-space and configuration-space representations are explained in detail. An important new feature of these methods is the possibility to account for the repulsive Coulomb interaction between two of the three clusters in all channels. Comparison with previous calculations based on approximate methods used in nuclear reaction theory is also discussed.
The reaction $K^-d \to πΣn$ is studied within a Faddeev-type approach, with emphasis on the specific kinematics of the E31 experiment at J-PARC, i.e. $K^-$ beam momentum of $p_K = 1$ GeV/c and neutron angle of $θ_n=0^\circ$. The employed Faddeev approach requires as main input amplitudes for the two-body subsystems $\bar KN \to \bar KN$ and $\bar KN \to πΣ$. For the latter results from recently published chiral unitary models of the $\bar KN$ interaction are utilized. The $\bar KN \to \bar KN$ amplitude itself, however, is taken from a recent partial-wave analysis. Due to the large incoming mo…
\noindent{\bf Background:} Deuteron-induced nuclear reactions are an essential tool for probing the structure of nuclei as well as astrophysical information such as $(n,γ)$ cross sections. The deuteron-nucleus system is typically described within a Faddeev three-body model consisting of a neutron ($n$), a proton ($p$), and the target nucleus ($A$) interacting through pairwise phenomenological potentials. While Faddeev techniques enable the exact description of the three-body dynamics, their predictive power is limited in part by the omission of irreducible neutron-proton-nucleus three-body for…
Obtaining cross sections for nuclear reactions at intermediate energies based on the Glauber formulation has a long tradition. Only recently the energy regime of a few hundred MeV has become accessible to ab-initio Faddeev calculations of three-body scattering. In order to go to higher energies, the Faddeev equation for three-body scattering is formulated and directly solved without employing a partial wave decomposition. In the simplest form the Faddeev equation for interacting scalar particles is a three-dimensional integral equation in five variables, from which the total cross section, the…
Nucleon-knockout reactions on proton targets (p, pN ) have experienced a renewed interest due to the availability of inverse-kinematics experiment with exotic nuclei. Various theoretical descriptions have been used to describe these reactions, such as the Distorted-Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA), the Faddeev-type formalism and the Transfer to the Continuum method. Our goal is to benchmark the observables computed with the Faddeev and Transfer to the Continuum formalisms in the intermediate energy regime relevant for the experimental (p, pn) and (p, 2p) studies. In this paper, we analyze the…
Exact Faddeev-type three-body equations are applied to the study of the proton transfer reactions $(d,n)$ in the system consisting of a nuclear core and two nucleons. The integral equations for the three-body transition operators are solved in the momentum-space framework including the Coulomb interaction via the screening and renormalization method. For a weakly bound final nucleus the calculation of the $(d,n)$ reaction is more demanding in terms of the screening radius as compared to the $(d,p)$ reaction. Well converged differential cross section results are obtained for $^{7}{Be}(d,n)^{8}{…
Low-energy muon-transfer cross sections and rates in collisions of muonic atoms with hydrogen isotopes are calculated using a six-state close-coupling approximation to coordinate-space Faddeev-Hahn-type equations. In the muonic case satisfactory results are obtained for all hydrogen isotopes and the experimentaly observed strong isotopic dependence of transfer rates is also reproduced. A comparison with results of other theoretical and available experimental works is presented. The present model also leads to good transfer cross sections in the well-understood problem of antihydrogen formation…
The finite range adiabatic wave approximation provides a practical method to analyze (d,p) or (p,d) reactions, however until now the level of accuracy obtained in the description of the reaction dynamics has not been determined. In this work, we perform a systematic comparison between the finite range adiabatic wave approximation and the exact Faddeev method. We include studies of $^{11}$Be(p,d)$^{10}$Be(g.s.) at $E_p=$5, 10 and 35 MeV; $^{12}$C(d,p)$^{13}$C(g.s.) at $E_d=$7, 12 and 56 MeV and $^{48}$Ca(d,p)$^{49}$Ca(g.s.) at $E_d=$19, 56 and 100 MeV. Results show that the two methods agree wi…
We present a practical method to solve Faddeev three-body equations at energies above three-body breakup threshold as integral equations in coordinate space. This is an extension of previously used method for bound states and scattering states below three-body breakup threshold energy. We show that breakup components in three-body reactions produce long-range effects on Faddeev integral kernels in coordinate space, and propose numerical procedures to treat these effects. Using these techniques, we solve Faddeev equations for neutron-deuteron scattering to compare with benchmark solutions.
The core excitation, being an important reaction mechanism, so far is not properly included in most calculations of three-body nuclear reactions. We aim to include the excitation of the core nucleus using an exact Faddeev-type framework for nuclear reactions in the three-body (core + neutron + proton) system. We employ Alt, Grassberger, and Sandhas (AGS) integral equations for the three-particle transition operators and solve them in the momentum-space framework. The Coulomb interaction is included via the method of screening and renormalization. We calculate elastic, inelastic, and transfer r…
We propose a novel approach to solve the three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev equation which avoids the complicated singularity pattern going with the moving logarithmic singularities of the standard approach. In this new approach the treatment of the 3N Faddeev equation becomes essentially as simple as the treatment of the two-body Lippmann-Schwinger equation. Very good agreement of the new and old approaches in the application to nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering and the breakup reaction is found.
The three--nucleon scattering problem in a nuclear medium is considered within the Faddeev technique. In particular the deuteron break--up cross section that governs the formation and the break--up reactions of deuterons (NNN <-> Nd) in a nuclear environment is calculated at finite temperatures and densities. A significant enhancement of the in--medium break--up cross section with increasing density has been found.
{\bf Background} Deuteron induced reactions are widely used to probe nuclear structure and astrophysical information. Those (d,p) reactions may be viewed as three-body reactions and described with Faddeev techniques. {\bf Purpose} Faddeev-AGS equations in momentum space have a long tradition of utilizing separable interactions in order to arrive at sets of coupled integral equations in one variable. However, it needs to be demonstrated that observables calculated based on separable interactions agree exactly with those based on nonseparable forces. {\bf Methods} Momentum space AGS equations ar…
We consider deuteron formation in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies. The elementary reaction rates (Nd -> NNN) in this context are calculated using rigorous Faddeev methods. To this end an in-medium Faddeev equation that consistently includes the energy shift and Pauli blocking effects has been derived and solved numerically. As a first application we have calculated the life-time of deuteron fluctuations for nuclear densities and temperatures typical for the final stage of heavy ion collisions. We find substantial differences between using the isolated and the in-medium rates.
The Faddeev-Yakubovski equations are solved in configuration space for low energy four-nucleon continuum states. Coulomb interaction was included into the formalism permitting an exact description of the scattering states in p+$^{3}$He and p+$^{3}$H systems.
We discuss the appearance of spurious solutions of few-body equations for Faddeev amplitudes. The identification of spurious states, i.e., states that lack the symmetry required for solutions of the Schroedinger equation, as well as the symmetrization of the Faddeev equations is investigated. As an example, systems of three and four electrons, bound in a harmonic-oscillator potential and interacting by the Coulomb potential, are presented.
Previous studies of $(d,p)$ reactions in three-body (proton, neutron, nuclear core) systems revealed a nontrivial effect of the core excitation: the transfer cross section cannot be factorized into the spectroscopic factor and the single-particle cross section obtained neglecting the core excitation. This observable, up to a kinematic factor, is the angular distribution of the core nucleus in the $(p,d)$ reaction. The study of the core excitation effect for the most closely related observable in the $(p,pn)$ three-body breakup, i.e., the core angular distribution, is aimed in the present work.…
The Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels (CDCC) method is a well established theory for direct nuclear reactions which includes breakup to all orders. Alternatively, the 3-body problem can be solved exactly within the Faddeev formalism which explicitly includes breakup and transfer channels to all orders. With the aim to understand how CDCC compares with the exact 3-body Faddeev formulation, we study deuteron induced reactions on: i) $^{10}$Be at $E_{\rm d}= 21.4, 40.9 \; {\rm and} \; 71$ MeV; ii) $^{12}$C at $E_{\rm d} = 12 \; {\rm and} \; 56$ MeV; and iii) $^{48}$Ca at $E_{\rm d} = 56$ MeV…
We demonstrate numerically that proton-proton (pp) scattering observables can be determined directly by standard short range methods using a screened pp Coulomb force without renormalization. In examples the appropriate screening radii are given. We also numerically investigate solutions of the 3-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger (LS) equation for a screened Coulomb potential alone in the limit of large screening radii and confirm analytically predicted properties for off-shell, half-shell and on-shell Coulomb t-matrices. These 3-dimensional solutions will form a basis for a novel approach to inc…
The calculations of three-body direct nuclear reactions with nonlocal optical potentials are performed for the first time using the framework of Faddeev-type scattering equations. Important nonlocality effect is found for transfer reactions like d+16O -> p + 17O often improving the description of the experimental data.
Direct nuclear reactions $\vec{d}+A$ and $\vec{p}+(An)$ are described in the framework of three-body Faddeev-type equations. Differential cross section and analyzing powers are calculated using several optical potential models and compared with the experimental data. Quite satisfactory agreement is found except for few systematic discrepancies.
A three-body semiclassical model is proposed to describe the nucleon transfer and emission reactions in a heavy-ion collision. In this model the two heavy particles, i.e. nuclear cores A$_1(Z_{A_1}, M_{A_1})$ and A$_2(Z_{A_2}, M_{A_2})$, move along classical trajectories $\vec R_1(t)$ and $\vec R_2(t)$ respectively, while the dynamics of the lighter neutron, n, is considered from a quantum mechanical point of view. Here, $M_i$ are the nucleon masses and $Z_i$ are the Coulomb charges of the heavy nuclei ($i=1,2$). A Faddeev-type semiclassical formulation using realistic paired nuclear-nuclear p…
The Faddeev-Yakubowsky equations in configuration space have been solved for the four nucleon system. The results with an S-wave interaction model in the isospin approximation are presented. They concern the bound and scattering states below the first three-body threshold. The elastic phase-shifts for the N+NNN reaction in different ($S,T$) channels are given and the corresponding low energy expansions are discussed. Particular attention is payed to the n+t elastic cross section. Its resonant structure is well described in terms of a simple NN interaction. First results concerning the S-matrix…
The Faddeev AGS equations are solved for coupled-channels $\bar{K}NN-πΣ{N}$ system with quantum numbers $I=1/2$ and $S=0$. Using separable potentials for $\bar{K}N-πΣ$ interaction, we have calculated the transition probability for the $(Y_{K})_{I=0}+N\rightarrowπΣ{N}$ reaction. The possibility to observe the trace of $K^{-}pp$ quasi-bound state in the $πΣ{N}$ mass spectra was studied. Various types of chiral based and phenomenological potentials are used to describe the $\bar{K}N-πΣ$ interaction. It was shown that not only we can see the signature of the $K^{-}pp$ quasi-bound state in the mass…
The continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) method is compared to the exact solution of the three-body Faddeev equations in momentum space. We present results for: i) elastic and breakup observables of d-12C at E_d=56 MeV, ii) elastic scattering of d-58Ni at E_d=80 MeV, and iii) elastic, breakup and transfer observables for 11Be+p at E_{11Be}/A=38.4 MeV. Our comparative studies show that, in the first two cases, the CDCC method is a good approximation to the full three-body Faddeev solution, but for the 11Be exotic nucleus, depending on the observable or the kinematic regime, it may miss…
The method of screening and renormalization is used to include the Coulomb interaction between the charged particles in the momentum-space description of three- and four-body nuclear reactions. The necessity for the renormalization of the scattering amplitudes and the reliability of the method is demonstrated. The Coulomb effect on observables is discussed.
We introduce an approach, based on the coordinate space Faddeev equations, to solve the quantum mechanical three-body Coulomb problem in the continuum. We apply the approach to compute measured properties of the first two $0^+$ levels in $^{12}$C, including the width of the excited level, in a 3$α$-particle model. We use the two-body interaction which reproduces the low energy $α$-$α$ scattering data and add a three-body force to account for the compound state admixture.
The Coulomb interaction between the two protons is included in the calculation of three-nucleon hadronic and electromagnetic reactions using screening and renormalization approach. Calculations are done using integral equations in momentum space. The reliability of the method is demonstrated. The Coulomb effect on observables is discussed.
In response to recent experimental studies we investigate Coulomb distortion effects on $(e,e')$ reactions from medium and heavy nuclei for the case of electrons and positrons. We extend our previously reported full DWBA treatment of Coulomb distortions to the case of positrons for the $^{208}Pb(e,e')$ reaction in the quasielastic region for a particular nuclear model. In addition, we use previously reported successful approaches to treating Coulomb corrections in an approximate way to calculate the Coulomb distortion effects for $(e,e')$ reactions for both electrons and positrons for the case…
We aim to understand the role of Coulomb interactions as well as of different equations of state on the disappearance of transverse flow for various asymmetric reactions leading to same total mass. For the present study, the total mass of the system is kept constant (ATOT = 152) and asymmetry of the reaction is varied between 0.2 and 0.7. We find that the contribution of mean-field at low incident energies is more for nearly symmetric systems, while the trend is opposite at higher incident energies. The Coulomb interactions as well as different equations of state are found to affect the balanc…

We discuss the effects of electron capture by the projectile and the Coulomb explosion of a molecular projectile on the electron screening in low energy nuclear reactions in laboratory. Using the idea of equilibrium charge, we show that the electron capture of projectile leads to a screening energy which significantly exceeds the adiabatic limit in the simple consideration for the D(d,p)T reaction and provides a possibility to explain the large screening energy claimed in the analysis of experimental data. We then show that the Coulomb explosion can result in a large apparent screening energy …
We report a significant improvement of an approximate method of including electron Coulomb distortion in electron induced reactions at momentum transfers greater than the inverse of the size of the target nucleus. In particular, we have found a new parametrization for the elastic electron scattering phase shifts that works well at all electron energies greater than 300 $MeV$. As an illustration, we apply the improved approximation to the $(e,e'p)$ reaction from medium and heavy nuclei. We use a relativistic ``single particle'' model for $(e,e'p)$ as as applied to $^{208}Pb(e,e'p)$ and to recen…
The appearance of some papers dealing with the $K^- d \to πΣn$ reaction, with some discrepancies in the results and a proposal to measure the reaction at forward $n$ angles at J-PARC justifies to retake the theoretical study with high precision to make accurate predictions for the experiment and extract from there the relevant physical information. We do this in the present paper showing results using the Watson approach and the truncated Faddeev approach. We argue that the Watson approach is more suitable to study the reaction because it takes into account the potential energy of the nucleons…
The effect of core excitations in transfer reactions of the form A(d, p)B has been found to affect significantly the calculated cross sections and to depend strongly and non-linearly on the incident deuteron energy in Faddeev/AGS calculations. Our goal is to investigate these effects within a coupled-channels formulation of the scattering problem which, in addition of being computationally less demanding than the Faddeev counterpart, may help shed some light into the physical interpretation of the cited effects. We use an extended version of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) me…
We discuss the application of the chiral N3LO forces to three-nucleon reactions and point to the challenges which will have to be addressed. Present approaches to solve three-nucleon Faddeev equations are based on a partial-wave decomposition. A rapid increase of the number of terms contributing to the chiral three-nucleon force when increasing the order of the chiral expansion from N2LO to N3LO forced us to develop a fast and effective method of automatized partial wave decomposition. At low energies of the incoming nucleon below about 20MeV, where only a limited number of partial waves is re…
The Coulomb interaction between the two protons is included in the calculation of proton-deuteron elastic scattering, radiative proton-deuteron capture and two-body electromagnetic disintegration of ${}^3\mathrm{He}$. The hadron dynamics is based on the purely nucleonic charge-dependent (CD) Bonn potential and its realistic extension CD Bonn + $Δ$ to a coupled-channel two-baryon potential, allowing for single virtual $Δ$-isobar excitation. Calculations are done using integral equations in momentum space. The screening and renormalization approach is employed for including the Coulomb interacti…
A process, involving the 7Be core excitation in the Coulomb breakup of 8B into p + 7Be has been investigated. From the experimental results recently obtained in RIKEN we have derived the mixing amplitude of the | 7Be(1/2-) X (1p_{3/2}); 2+> configuration in the ground state of 8B. Implications on the evaluation of the S17 at stellar energies are discussed.
The shell correction is proposed in the improved isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (ImIQMD) model, which plays an important role in heavy-ion fusion reactions near Coulomb barrier. By using the ImIQMD model, the static and dynamical fusion barriers, dynamical barrier distribution in the fusion reactions are analyzed systematically. The fusion and capture excitation functions for a series of reaction systems are calculated and compared with experimental data. It is found that the fusion cross sections for neutron-rich systems increase obviously, and the strong shell effects of two co…
The Coulomb dissociation method to obtain the astrophysical S-factor, $S_{17}(0)$, for the $^7$Be($p,γ)^8$B reaction at solar energies is investigated by analysing the recently measured data on the breakup reaction $^{208}$Pb$(^8$B,$^7$Be$~p)^{208}$Pb at 46.5 MeV/A beam energy. Breakup cross sections corresponding to E1, $E2$ and $M1$ transitions are calculated with a theory of Coulomb excitation that includes the effects of the Coulomb recoil as well as relativistic retardation. The interplay of nuclear and Coulomb contributions to the breakup process is studied by performing a full quantum m…
