In this paper we develop a measure-theoretic method to treat problems in hypergraph theory. Our central theorem is a correspondence principle between three objects: An increasing hypergraph sequence, a measurable set in an ultraproduct space and a measurable set in a finite dimensional Lebesgue space. Using this correspondence principle we build up the theory of dense hypergraphs from scratch. Along these lines we give new proofs for the Hypergraph Removal Lemma, the Hypergraph Regularity Lemma, the Counting Lemma and the Testability of Hereditary Hypergraph Properties. We prove various new results including a strengthening of the Regularity Lemma and an Inverse Counting Lemma. We also prove the equivalence of various notions for convergence of hypergraphs and we construct limit objects for such sequences. We prove that the limit objects are unique up to a certain family of measure preserving transformations. As our main tool we study the integral and measure theory on the ultraproduct of finite measure spaces which is interesting on its own right.
Generalizing the concept of dense hypergraph, we say that a hypergraph is weakly dense, if no k in the half-open interval [2,sqrt(n)) is the degree of more than k^2 vertices. In our main result, we prove the famous Erdos-Faber-Lovasz conjecture when the hypergraph is weakly dense.
P. Erdős [On extremal problems of graphs and generalized graphs, Israel Journal of Mathematics 2 (1964), 183-190] characterised those hypergraphs $F$ that have to appear in any sufficiently large hypergraph $H$ of positive density. We study related questions for $3$-uniform hypergraphs with the additional assumption that $H$ has to be uniformly dense with respect to vertex sets. In particular, we characterise those hypergraphs $F$ that are guaranteed to appear in large uniformly dense hypergraphs $H$ of positive density. We also review the case when the density of the induced subhypergraphs of…
An $r$-uniform graph $G$ is dense if and only if every proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$ satisfies $λ(G') < λ(G)$, where $λ(G)$ is the Lagrangian of a hypergraph $G$. In 1980's, Sidorenko showed that $π(F)$, the Turán density of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$ is $r!$ multiplying the supremum of the Lagrangians of all dense $F$-hom-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs. This connection has been applied in estimating Turán density of hypergraphs. When $r=2$, the result of Motzkin and Straus shows that a graph is dense if and only if it is a complete graph. However, when $r\ge 3$, it becomes much harder to estim…
We study a model of random uniform hypergraphs, where a random instance is obtained by adding random edges to a large hypergraph of a given density. We obtain a tight bound on the number of random edges required to ensure non-2-colorability. We prove that for any k-uniform hypergraph with Omega(n^{k-epsilon}) edges, adding omega(n^{k epsilon/2}) random edges makes the hypergraph almost surely non-2-colorable. This is essentially tight, since there is a 2-colorable hypergraph with Omega(n^{k-ε}) edges which almost surely remains 2-colorable even after adding o(n^{k ε/ 2}) random edges.
Motzkin and Straus established a remarkable connection between the maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph in 1965. This connection and its extensions were successfully employed in optimization to provide heuristics for the maximum clique number in graphs. It is useful in practice if similar results hold for hypergraphs. In this paper, we provide upper bounds on the Lagrangian of a hypergraph containing dense subgraphs when the number of edges of the hypergraph is in certain ranges. These results support a pair of conjectures introduced by Y. Peng and C. Zhao (2012) and extend a result of…
We show that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices whose minimum $(k-2)$-degree is at least $(5/9+o(1))n^2/2$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle. A construction due to Han and Zhao shows that this minimum degree condition is optimal. The same result was proved independently by Lang and Sahueza-Matamala.
For any $γ>0$, Keevash, Knox and Mycroft constructed a polynomial-time algorithm to determine the existence of perfect matchings in any $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph whose minimum codegree is at least $n/k+γn$. We prove a structure theorem that enables us to determine the existence of a perfect matching for any $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least $n/k$. This solves a problem of Karpiński, Ruciński and Szymańska completely. Our proof uses a lattice-based absorbing method.
We study properties of random subcomplexes of partitions returned by (a suitable form of) the Strong Hypergraph Regularity Lemma, which we call regular slices. We argue that these subcomplexes capture many important structural properties of the original hypergraph. Accordingly we advocate their use in extremal hypergraph theory, and explain how they can lead to considerable simplifications in existing proofs in this field. We also use them for establishing the following two new results. Firstly, we prove a hypergraph extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem: for every $δ>0$ every sufficiently lar…
We find an asymptotic enumeration formula for the number of simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs with a given degree sequence, when the number of edges is sufficiently large. The formula is given in terms of the solution of a system of equations. We give sufficient conditions on the degree sequence which guarantee existence of a solution to this system. Furthermore, we solve the system and give an explicit asymptotic formula when the degree sequence is close to regular. This allows us to establish several properties of the degree sequence of a random $r$-uniform hypergraph with a given number of edg…
For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ let $\textrm{ex}(n,F)$ be the maximum number of edges of a $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph $H$ which contains no copy of $F$. Determining or estimating $\textrm{ex}(n,F)$ is a classical and central problem in extremal combinatorics. While for graphs ($k=2$) this problem is well understood, due to the work of Mantel, Turán, Erdős, Stone, Simonovits and many others, only very little is known for $k$-uniform hypergraphs for $k>2$. Already the case when $F$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with three edges on $k+1$ vertices is still wide open even for $k=3$. We consid…
Let $H$ be a $k$-graph on $n$ vertices, with minimum codegree at least $n/k + cn$ for some fixed $c > 0$. In this paper we construct a polynomial-time algorithm which finds either a perfect matching in $H$ or a certificate that none exists. This essentially solves a problem of Karpiński, Ruciński and Szymańska; Szymańska previously showed that this problem is NP-hard for a minimum codegree of $n/k - cn$. Our algorithm relies on a theoretical result of independent interest, in which we characterise any such hypergraph with no perfect matching using a family of lattice-based constructions.
We investigate extremal problems for hypergraphs satisfying the following density condition. A $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V, E)$ is $(d, η,P_2)$-dense if for any two subsets of pairs $P$, $Q\subseteq V\times V$ the number of pairs $((x,y),(x,z))\in P\times Q$ with $\{x,y,z\}\in E$ is at least $d|\mathcal{K}_{P_2}(P,Q)|-η|V|^3,$ where $\mathcal{K}_{P_2}(P,Q)$ denotes the set of pairs in $P\times Q$ of the form $((x,y),(x,z))$. For a given $3$-uniform hypergraph $F$ we are interested in the infimum $d\geq 0$ such that for sufficiently small $η$ every sufficiently large $(d, η,P_2)$-dense hypergr…
We study sufficient conditions for the existence of Hamilton cycles in uniformly dense $3$-uniform hypergraphs. Problems of this type were first considered by Lenz, Mubayi, and Mycroft for loose Hamilton cycles and Aigner-Horev and Levy considered it for tight Hamilton cycles for a fairly strong notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We focus on tight cycles and obtain optimal results for a weaker notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We show that if an $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ has the property that for any set of vertices $X$ and for any collection $P$ of pairs of vertices…
Our main result is that every graph $G$ on $n\ge 10^4r^3$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) \ge (1 - 1 / 10^4 r^{3/2} ) n$ has a fractional $K_r$-decomposition. Combining this result with recent work of Barber, Kühn, Lo and Osthus leads to the best known minimum degree thresholds for exact (non-fractional) $F$-decompositions for a wide class of graphs~$F$ (including large cliques). For general $k$-uniform hypergraphs, we give a short argument which shows that there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $(1- c_k /r^{…

We describe algorithmic Number On the Forehead protocols that provide dense Ruzsa-Szemerédi graphs. One protocol leads to a simple and natural extension of the original construction of Ruzsa and Szemerédi. The graphs induced by this protocol have $n$ vertices, $Ω(n^2/\log n)$ edges, and are decomposable into $n^{1+O(1/\log \log n)}$ induced matchings. Another protocol is an explicit (and slightly simpler) version of the construction of Alon, Moitra and Sudakov, producing graphs with similar properties. We also generalize the above protocols to more than three players, in order to construct den…

We prove the well-known Brown-Erdős-Sós Conjecture for hypergraphs of large uniformity in the following form: any dense linear $r$-graph $G$ has $k$ edges spanning at most $(r-2)k+3$ vertices, provided the uniformity $r$ of $G$ is large enough given the linear density of $G$, and the number of vertices of $G$ is large enough given $r$ and $k$.
We give several results showing that different discrete structures typically gain certain spanning substructures (in particular, Hamilton cycles) after a modest random perturbation. First, we prove that adding linearly many random edges to a dense k-uniform hypergraph ensures the (asymptotically almost sure) existence of a perfect matching or a loose Hamilton cycle. The proof involves an interesting application of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma, which might be independently useful. We next prove that digraphs with certain strong expansion properties are pancyclic, and use this to show that addin…
We consider problems about packing and counting Hamilton $\ell$-cycles in hypergraphs of large minimum degree. Given a hypergraph $\mathcal H$, for a $d$-subset $A\subseteq V(\mathcal H)$, we denote by $d_{\mathcal H}(A)$ the number of distinct \emph{edges} $f\in E(\mathcal H)$ for which $A\subseteq f$, and set $δ_d(\mathcal H)$ to be the minimum $d_{\mathcal H}(A)$ over all $A\subseteq V(\mathcal H)$ of size $d$. We show that if a $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices $\mathcal H$ satisfies $δ_{k-1}(\mathcal H)\geq αn$ for some $α>1/2$, then for every $\ell<k/2$ $\mathcal H$ contains $(1-o(1…
Erdős and Pach (1983) introduced the natural degree-based generalisations of Ramsey numbers, where instead of seeking large monochromatic cliques in a $2$-edge coloured complete graph, we seek monochromatic subgraphs of high minimum or average degree. Here we expand the study of these so-called quasi-Ramsey numbers in a few ways, in particular, to multiple colours and to uniform hypergraphs. Quasi-Ramsey numbers are known to exhibit a certain unique phase transition and we show that this is also the case across the settings we consider. Our results depend on a density-biased notion of hypergra…
In 1990 Bender, Canfield and McKay gave an asymptotic formula for the number of connected graphs on $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ with $m$ edges, whenever $n\to\infty$ and $n-1\le m=m(n)\le \binom{n}{2}$. We give an asymptotic formula for the number $C_r(n,m)$ of connected $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $[n]$ with $m$ edges, whenever $r\ge 3$ is fixed and $m=m(n)$ with $m/n\to\infty$, i.e., the average degree tends to infinity. This complements recent results of Behrisch, Coja-Oghlan and Kang (the case $m=n/(r-1)+Θ(n)$) and the present authors (the case $m=n/(r-1)+o(n)$, i.e., `nullity' or `excess' $o(n)…
In this paper we study hypergraphs definable in an algebraically closed field. Our goal is to show, in the spirit of the so-called transference principles in extremal combinatorics, that if a given algebraic hypergraph is "dense" in a certain sense, then a generic low-dimensional subset of its vertices induces a subhypergraph that is also "dense." (For technical reasons, we only consider low-dimensional subsets that are parameterized by rational functions.) Our proof approach is inspired by the hypergraph containers method, developed by Balogh, Morris, and Samotij and independently by Saxton a…
We show that there exist linear $3$-uniform hypergraphs with $n$ vertices and $Ω(n^2)$ edges which contain no copy of the $3 \times 3$ grid. This makes significant progress on a conjecture of Füredi and Ruszinkó. We also discuss connections to proving lower bounds for the $(9,6)$ Brown-Erdős-Sós problem and to a problem of Solymosi and Solymosi.
Given two $k$-graphs $H$ and $F$, a perfect $F$-packing in $H$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $F$ in $H$ which together cover all the vertices in $H$. In the case when $F$ is a single edge, a perfect $F$-packing is simply a perfect matching. For a given fixed $F$, it is often the case that the decision problem whether an $n$-vertex $k$-graph $H$ contains a perfect $F$-packing is NP-complete. Indeed, if $k \geq 3$, the corresponding problem for perfect matchings is NP-complete whilst if $k=2$ the problem is NP-complete in the case when $F$ has a component consisting of at least $3…
We study $S(t-1,t,2t)$, which is a special class of Steiner systems. Explicit constructions for designing such systems are developed under a graph-theoretic platform where Steiner systems are represented in the form of uniform hypergraphs. The constructions devised are then used to study the $2$-coloring properties of these uniform hypergraphs.
The paper proves the equivalence of the notions of nondeterministic and deterministic parameter testing for uniform dense hypergraphs of arbitrary order. It generalizes the result previously known only for the case of simple graphs. By a similar method we establish also the equivalence between nondeterministic and deterministic hypergraph property testing, answering the open problem in the area. We introduce a new notion of a cut norm for hypergraphs of higher order, and employ regularity techniques combined with the ultralimit method.
The hypergraph states are pure multipartite quantum states corresponding to a hypergraph. It is an equal superposition of the states belonging to the computational basis. Given any hypergraph, we can construct a hypergraph state determined by a Boolean function. In contrast, we can find a hypergraph, corresponding to a Boolean function. This investigation develops a number of combinatorial structures concerned with the hypergraph states. For instance, the elements of the computational basis generate a lattice. The chains and antichains in this lattice assist us to find the equation of the Bool…
We investigate the famous conjecture by Erd\H os-Simonovits and Sidorenko using information theory. Our method gives a unified treatment for all known cases of the conjecture and it implies various new results as well. Our topological type conditions allow us to extend Sidorenko's conjecture to large families of $k$-uniform hypergraphs. This is somewhat unexpected since the conjecture fails for $k$ uniform hypergraphs in general.
A theorem of Elekes and Szabó recognizes algebraic groups among certain complex algebraic varieties with maximal size intersections with finite grids. We establish a generalization to relations of any arity and dimension, definable in: 1) stable structures with distal expansions (includes algebraically and differentially closed fields of characteristic $0$); and 2) $o$-minimal expansions of groups. Our methods provide explicit bounds on the power saving exponent in the non-group case. Ingredients of the proof include: a higher arity generalization of the abelian group configuration theorem in …
We present a systematic study of the regularity phenomena for NIP hypergraphs and connections to the theory of (locally) generically stable measures, providing a model-theoretic hypergraph version of the results from [L. Lovász, B. Szegedy, "Regularity partitions and the topology of graphons", An irregular mind, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010, 415-446]. Besides, we revise the two extremal cases of regularity for stable and distal hypergraphs, improving and generalizing the results from [A. Chernikov, S. Starchenko, "Regularity lemma for distal structures", J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 2437-…
We develop a theory of limits for sequences of dense abstract simplicial complexes, where a sequence is considered convergent if its homomorphism densities converge. The limiting objects are represented by stacks of measurable [0,1]-valued functions on unit cubes of increasing dimension, each corresponding to a dimension of the abstract simplicial complex. We show that convergence in homomorphism density implies convergence in a cut-metric, and vice versa, as well as showing that simplicial complexes sampled from the limit objects closely resemble its structure. Applying this framework, we als…
