We have identified an X-ray transient (hereafter M15 X-3) in the globular cluster M15 from an archival Chandra grating observation. M15 X-3 appears at an X-ray luminosity of 6*10^{33} ergs/s with a spectrum consistent with an absorbed power law of photon index 1.51+-0.14. The object is identifiable in archival Chandra HRC-I observations with an X-ray luminosity of 2-6*10^{31} ergs/s and apparently soft colors, suggesting a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary in quiescence. We also observe it in outburst in a 2007 Chandra HRC-I observation, and in archival 1994-1995 ROSAT HRI observations.
We identify a likely optical/UV counterpart with a (possibly transient) UV excess from archival HST data, which suggests a main sequence companion. We argue that M15 X-3's behavior is similar to that of the very faint X-ray transients which have been observed in the Galactic Center. We discuss several explanations for its very low X-ray luminosity, with the assumption that we have detected its companion. M15 X-3's uniquely low extinction and well-determined distance make it an excellent target for future studies.
The determination of structural parameters of 11 faint Galactic globular clusters that, in most cases, had not been previously studied in this context. The clusters are IC1257, Lynga7, Terzan4, Terzan10, BH176, ESO452-SC11, ESO280-SC08, 2MASS-GC01, 2MASS-GC02, GLIMPSE-C01 and AL3, which are projected not far from the central region of the Galaxy. Field-star contamination is significant in the colour-magnitude diagrams. Stellar radial number-density and surface-brightness profiles are built with 2MASS photometry that, for the present clusters, corresponds basically to giant-branch stars. Field-…
The core of the metal poor Galactic Globular Cluster M92 (NGC 6341) has been observed with WFPC2 on the Hubble Space Telescope through visual, blue and mid-UV filters in a program devoted to study the evolved stellar population in a selected sample of Galactic Globular Clusters. In the UV $(m_{255}, m_{255}-U)$ color magnitude diagram we have discovered a faint `UV-dominant' object. This star lies within the error box of a Low Luminosity Globular Cluster X-ray source (LLGCX) recently found in the core of M92. The properties of the UV star discovered in M92 are very similar to those of other UV…
The existence of an intergalactic globular cluster population in the Coma cluster of galaxies has been tested using surface-brightness fluctuations. The main result is that the intergalactic globular cluster surface density ($N_{\rm IGC}$) does not correlate with the distance to the center of Coma and hence with the environment. Furthermore, comparing these results with different Coma mass-distribution model predictions, it is suggested that $N_{\rm IGC}$ must in fact be zero all over Coma. On the other hand, the results for $N_{\rm IGC}$ and the faint end of the galaxy number counts (beyond $…
The majority of the globular clusters associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy are faint. In this respect it differs significantly from the globular cluster systems surrounding typical giant galaxies. The observation that most of globular clusters in the outer halo of the Galaxy are also sub-luminous may be understood by assuming that these clusters once also belonged to faint cluster-rich dwarf systems that were subsequently captured and destroyed by the Milky Way System.
X-ray imaging and spectroscopy can be used to probe the binary content of globular clusters. Binaries are thought to play a key role in the dynamical evolution of the clusters by serving as an internal source of energy which counters the tendency of their cores to collapse. Various kinds of binaries are found in clusters in X-rays, including BY Dra or RS CVn systems, Cataclysmic Variables and low mass X-ray binaries as well as millisecond pulsars. In this review, we will present the most recent X-ray observations of globular clusters as performed with XMM-Newton and Chandra. We will illustrate…
We present the results of a photometric survey for variable stars in the field of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6752. The cluster was monitored in 1996 and 1997 for a total of 54 hours with 3 different CCD cameras mounted on the 1.0-m Swope telescope. Eleven new variables were identified: 3 SX Phe stars, 7 contact binaries and 1 candidate detached eclipsing binary. All 3 SX Phe variables are likely members of the cluster while only 1 out of the 7 contact binaries is a potential cluster member. As a by-product of our survey we obtained UBV photometry for a large sample of stars in the cluster…
Using the Chandra/ACIS-I detector, we have identified an X-ray source (CXOU 132619.7-472910.8) in the globular cluster NGC 5139 with a thermal spectrum identical to that observed from transiently accreting neutron stars in quiescence. The absence of intensity variability on timescales as short as 4 seconds (< 25% rms variability) and as long as 5 years (<50% variability) supports the identification of this source as a neutron star, most likely maintained at a high effective temperature (approximately 1e6 K) by transient accretion from a binary companion. The ability to spectrally identify quie…
NGC 6397 is the second closest globular star cluster to the Sun. Using 5 days of time on the Hubble Space Telescope, we have constructed the deepest ever color-magnitude diagram for this cluster. We see a clear truncation in each of its two major stellar sequences. Faint red main sequence stars run out well above our observational limit and near to the theoretical prediction for the lowest mass stars capable of stable hydrogen-burning in their cores. We also see a truncation in the number counts of faint blue stars, namely white dwarfs. This reflects the limit to which the bulk of the white dw…
We present the discovery of three faint dwarf galaxies and a globular cluster in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), found in our MegaCam survey that spans the southern quadrant of M31, from a projected distance of ~50 kpc to \~150 kpc. Though the survey covers 57 sq. degrees, the four satellites lie within 2°of one another. We estimate that the globular cluster lies at a total distance of 175+/-55 kpc from M31, making it the farthest M31 globular cluster known. It also shows the typical characteristics of a bright globular cluster, with a half-light radius of 2.3+/-0.2 pc and an absolute …
We report our analysis of a Chandra X-ray observation of the rich globular cluster Terzan 5, in which we detect 50 sources to a limiting 1.0-6 keV X-ray luminosity of 3*10^{31} ergs/s within the half-mass radius of the cluster. Thirty-three of these have L_X>10^{32} ergs/s, the largest number yet seen in any globular cluster. In addition to the quiescent low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB, identified by Wijnands et al.), another 12 relatively soft sources may be quiescent LMXBs. We compare the X-ray colors of the harder sources in Terzan 5 to the Galactic Center sources studied by Muno and collaborat…
We present evidence that the globular cluster NGC 6397 contains two distinct classes of centrally-concentrated UV-bright stars. Color-magnitude diagrams constructed from U, B, V, and I data obtained with the HST/WFPC2 reveal seven UV-bright stars fainter than the main-sequence turnoff, three of which had previously been identified as cataclysmic variables (CVs). Lightcurves of these stars show the characteristic ``flicker'' of CVs, as well as longer-term variability. A fourth star is identified as a CV candidate on the basis of its variability and UV excess. Three additional UV-bright stars sh…
We present the luminosity function to very faint magnitudes for the globular clusters in M87, based on a 30 orbit \textit{Hubble Space Telescope (HST)} WFPC2 imaging program. The very deep images and corresponding improved false source rejection allow us to probe the mass function further beyond the turnover than has been done before. We compare our luminosity function to those that have been observed in the past, and confirm the similarity of the turnover luminosity between M87 and the Milky Way. We also find with high statistical significance that the M87 luminosity function is broader than …
We report the discovery of SDSSJ1049+5103, an overdensity of resolved blue stars at (α_{2000}, δ_{2000}) = (162.343, 51.051). This object appears to be an old, metal-poor stellar system at a distance of 45 +/- 10 kpc, with a half-light radius of 23$\pm 10$ pc and an absolute magnitude of M_V = -3.0^{+2.0}_{-0.7}. One star that is likely associated with this companion has an SDSS spectrum confirming it as a blue horizontal branch star at 48 kpc. The color-magnitude diagram of SDSSJ1049+5103 contains few, if any, horizontal or red giant branch stars, similar to the anomalously faint globular clu…
We present a Chandra observation of the globular cluster Terzan 5 during times when the neutron-star X-ray transient EXO 1745-248 located in this cluster was in its quiescent state. We detected the quiescent system with a (0.5-10 keV) luminosity of ~2 x 10^{33} ergs/s. This is similar to several other neutron-star transients observed in their quiescent states. However, the quiescent X-ray spectrum of EXO 1745--48 was dominated by a hard power-law component instead of the soft component that usually dominates the quiescent emission of other neutron-star X-ray transients. This soft component cou…
Growing evidence for the existence of two classes of ellipticals calls for a comparison of the properties of their globular cluster systems. I compiled information on the properties of over 50 globular cluster systems of faint and bright early-type galaxies, and investigated them in the light of the properties of the parent galaxies. The properties of globular cluster systems appear to separate into two classes rather than to follow continuous relations with their host galaxy properties. Globular cluster systems in faint, disky early-type galaxies with unresolved cores appear essentially unper…
We report on the Chandra ACIS-S3 imaging observation of the globular cluster NGC 6752. We detect 6 X-ray sources within the 10.5" core radius and 13 more within the 115" half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of Lx approx 10^{30} erg/s for cluster sources. We reanalyze archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array and make 12 optical identifications and one radio identification. Based on X-ray and optical properties of the identifications, we find 10 likely cataclysmic variables (CVs), 1-3 likely RS CVn or BY Dra systems, and 1 or 2 possible ba…
The luminosities of globular clusters are found to correlate with their half-light radii. The most luminous clusters have half-light radii r ~ 3 pc. Mean cluster luminosities are < Mv > = -6.64 +/- 0.26 for r < 2.0, < Mv > = -7.44 +/- 0.20 for 2.0 < r < 4.0 pc, and < Mv > = -6.57 +/- 0.21 for clusters with r > 4.0 pc. An even fainter value < Mv > = -5.85 +/- 0.36 is found for large clusters with r > 8.0 pc. These results possibly weaken confidence in the conclusion that the peak of the globular cluster luminosity distribution is a universal standard candle. In the outer Galactic halo globular …
The dynamical friction timescale for globular clusters to sink to the center of a dwarf elliptical galaxy (dE) is significantly less than a Hubble time if the halos have King-model or isothermal profiles and the globular clusters formed with the same radial density profile as the underlying stellar population. We examine the summed radial distribution of the entire globular cluster systems and the bright globular cluster candidates in 51 Virgo and Fornax Cluster dEs for evidence of dynamical friction processes. We find that the summed distribution of the entire globular cluster population clos…
BeppoSAX has detected a population of faint transient X-ray sources in the Galactic Centre. I show that a simple irradiated-disc picture gives a consistent fit to the properties of this population, and that it probably consists of low-mass X-ray binaries which have evolved beyond their minimum periods ~80 min. Since all post-minimum systems are transient, and neutron-star LMXBs are more common than black-hole LMXBs in the Galaxy, the majority of these systems should contain neutron stars, as observed. This picture predicts that the Galactic Centre transients should have orbital periods in the …
We report the discovery of millisecond oscillations in an X-ray burst from the X-ray transient SAX J1748.9-2021 in the globular cluster NGC 6440. Oscillations at a frequency of 409.7 +/- 0.3 Hz were present in one of nine X-ray bursts observed with the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the outburst which occurred in 2001. The burst was one of the two dimmest and had the longest duration and decay time. The average peak luminosity of two bursts showing radius expansion is (3.6 +/- 0.4) x 10^38 erg/s, consistent with the Eddington luminosity for a 1.4 solar mas…
We describe here the reduction methods that we developed to study the faintest red dwarfs and white dwarfs in an outer field of NGC6397, which was observed by \hst for 126 orbits in 2005. The particular challenge of this data set is that the faintest stars are not readily visible in individual exposures, so special care must be taken to combine the information in all the exposures in order to identify and measure them. Unfortunately, it is hard to find the faintest stars without also finding a large number of faint galaxies, so we developed specialized tools to distinguish between the point-li…
The globular cluster NGC 6440 is known to harbor a bright neutron-star X-ray transient. We observed the globular cluster with Chandra on two occasions when the bright transient was in its quiescent state in July 2000 and June 2003 (both observations were made nearly 2 years after the end of their preceding outbursts). The quiescent spectrum during the first observation is well represented by a two component model (a neutron-star atmosphere model plus a power-law component which dominates at energies above 2 keV). During the second observation (which was roughly of equal duration to the first o…
Analyses of their internal stellar kinematics imply that the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) companion galaxies to the Milky Way are among the most dark-matter dominated systems known. Should there be significant dark matter in the form of faint stars in these systems, the stellar luminosity function must be very different from that of a similar metallicity globular cluster, for which there is no evidence for dark matter. We present the faint stellar luminosity function in the Ursa Minor dSph, down to a luminosity corresponding to roughly 0.45 M_sun, derived from new deep HST/WFPC2 data. We find a rem…
The present status of the distance scale to Galactic globular clusters is reviewed. Six distance determination techniques which are deemed to be most reliable are discussed in depth. These different techniques are used to calibrate the absolute magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars. The various calibrations fall into three groups. Main sequence fitting using Hipparcos parallaxes, theoretical HB models and the RR Lyrae in the LMC all favor a bright calibration, implying a `long' globular cluster distance scale. White dwarf fitting and the astrometric distances yield a somewhat fainter RR Lyrae calibr…
Current evolutionary models imply that most Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) have P_orb<2 hours and are Dwarf Nova (DN) systems that are quiescent most of the time. Observations of nearby quiescent DN find that the UV spectrum is dominated by the hot white dwarf (WD), indicating that it provides a significant fraction of the optical light in addition to the quiescent disk and main sequence companion. Hence, identifying a faint, quiescent CV in either the field or a globular cluster (GC) from broadband colors depends on our ability to predict the WD contribution in quiescence. We are undertaking a t…
It is shown that globular clusters and the dwarf spheroidal companions of the Galaxy have a different distribution of flattening values, and appear to occupy adjacent regions of the M_v versus log R_h plane that can be separated by what will be referred to as the Shapley line. Surprisingly, typical dwarf spheroidal companions to the Milky Way System are fainter than the average Galactic globular cluster.
Fifty-seven nearby low surface brightness dwarf galaxies were searched for globular cluster candidates (GCCs) using Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging in V and I. The sample consists of 18 dwarf spheroidal (dSph), 36 irregular (dIrr), and 3 "transition" type (dIrr/dSph) galaxies with angular sizes less than 3.7 kpc situated at distances 2-6 Mpc in the field and in the nearby groups: M81, Centaurus A, Sculptor, Canes Venatici I cloud. We find that ~50% of dSph, dIrr/dSph, and dIrr galaxies contain GCCs. The fraction of GCCs located near the center of dwarf spheroidal galaxies is >2 times high…
Large populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in globular clusters have long been predicted, but the number of absolutely certain cluster CVs known in globulars is still less than 10. HST and Chandra observers have recently found dozens of cataclysmic variable candidates in several populous globular clusters. Confirmation and characterization of these candidates are extremely difficult, thus identification of unambiguous CVs remains important. We have searched all archival HST images of the dense globular cluster M80 for erupting dwarf novae (DN), and to check the outburst behaviors of two …
We consider the effect of binary stars on the main-sequence luminosity functions observed in the core of globular clusters, with specific reference to NGC 6752. We find that mass segregation results in an increased binary fraction at fainter magnitudes along the main-sequence. If this effect is not taken into account when analyzing luminosity functions, erroneous conclusions can be drawn regarding the distribution of single stars, and the dynamical state of the cluster. In the core of NGC 6752, our HST data reveal a flat luminosity function, in agreement with previous results. However, when we…
Some of the properties of the globular clusters in NGC 5128 are compared to those of Galactic globular clusters. Assuming the color- metallicity relations that hold for Galactic globular clusters then the metal-poor clusters in NGC 5128 that have [Fe/H] < -1.80 are significantly fainter than are the more metal-rich globulars in that galaxy. No such metallicity dependent luminosity difference is observed among the globular clusters associated with the Milky Way. Furthermore the NGC 5128 cluster sample contains two objects that, on the basis of their observed colors, appear to be super metal-poo…
Globular clusters in the outer halo (R_gc > 15 kpc) are found to be systematically fainter than those at smaller Galactocentric distances. Within the outer halo the compact clusters with half-light radii R_h < 10 pc are only found at R_gc < 40 kpc, while on the other hand the larger clusters with R_h > 10 pc are encountered at all Galactocentric distances. Among the compact clusters with R_h < 10 pc that have R_gc > 15 kpc, there are two objects with surprisingly high metallicities. One of these is Terzan 7, which is a companion of the Sagittarius dwarf. The other is Palomar 1. The data on the…
The X-ray transient XMMU J174716.1-281048 was serendipitously discovered with XMM-Newton in 2003. It lies about 0.9 degrees off the Galactic Centre and its spectrum shows a high absorption (~8 x 10E22 cm^(-2)). Previous X-ray observations of the source field performed in 2000 and 2001 did not detect the source, indicative of a quiescent emission at least two orders of magnitude fainter. The low luminosity during the outburst (~5 x 10E34 erg/s at 8 kpc) indicates that the source is a member of the ``very faint X-ray transients'' class. On 2005 March 22nd the INTEGRAL satellite caught a possible…
The core of the galactic globular cluster M13 (NGC 6205) has been observed with WFPC2 on the Hubble Space Telescope through visual, blue and mid- and far-UV filters in a programme devoted to study the UV population in a sample of Galactic globular clusters. In the UV Color Magnitude Diagrams derived from the HST images we have discovered three faint objects with a strong UV excess, which lie significantly outside the main loci defined by more than 12,000 normal cluster stars. The positions of two of the UV stars are nearly coincident (7" & 1") to those of a low luminosity X-ray source recently…
We present the stellar main sequence luminosity function (LF) of the disrupted, low-mass, low-concentration globular cluster Palomar 5 and its well-defined tidal tails, which emanate from the cluster as a result of its tidal interaction with the Milky Way. The results of our deep (B ~ 24.5) wide-field photometry unequivocally indicate that preferentially fainter stars were removed from the cluster so that the LF of the cluster's main body exhibits a significant degree of flattening compared to other globular clusters. There is clear evidence of mass segregation, which is reflected in a radial …
We investigate the old globular cluster (GC) population of 68 faint (Mv>-16 mag) dwarf galaxies located in the halo regions of nearby (<12 Mpc) loose galaxy groups and in the field environment based on archival HST/ACS images in F606W and F814W filters. The combined color distribution of 175 GC candidates peaks at (V-I)=0.96 +/- 0.07 mag and the GC luminosity function turnover for the entire sample is found at Mv,to = -7.6 +/- 0.11 mag, similar to the old metal-poor LMC GC population. Our data reveal a tentative trend of Mv,to becoming fainter from late-type to early-type galaxies. The luminos…
We present a 19 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the globular cluster Terzan 1. Fourteen sources are detected within 1.4 arcmin of the cluster center with 2 of these sources predicted to be not associated with the cluster (background AGN or foreground objects). The neutron star X-ray transient, X1732-304, has previously been observed in outburst within this globular cluster with the outburst seen to last for at least 12 years. Here we find 4 sources that are consistent with the ROSAT position for this transient, but none of the sources are fully consistent with the position of a radio source d…
We discuss the prospects for detecting faint intermediate-mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist in the cores of globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We briefly summarize the difficulties of stellar dynamical searches, then show that recently discovered relations between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity imply that in most cases, these black holes should be more easily detected in the radio than in the X-rays. Finally, we show upper limits from some radio observations of globular clusters, and discuss the possibility that the radio source in the cor…
Low-mass stars, those with main-sequence lifetimes that are of order the age of the Universe, provide unique constraints on the Initial Mass Function (IMF) when they formed. Star counts in systems with simple star-formation histories are particularly straightforward to interpret, and those in old systems allow one to determine the low-mass stellar IMF at large look-back times and thus at high redshift. We present the faint stellar luminosity function (based on optical HST data) in an external galaxy, the Ursa Minor dwarf Spheroidal (dSph). This relatively-nearby (distance 70kpc) companion gala…
Two type I X-ray bursts were detected from a position consistent with the transient X-ray source in NGC 6652 with the Wide Field Camera of the BeppoSAX satellite, strongly suggesting that this transient is a neutron star. Our detection brings to ten the number of X-ray sources in globular clusters in which a type I X-ray burst has been seen, out of twelve known bright sources. The statistical evidence that the fraction of low-mass X-ray binaries which contain a black hole accretor is smaller in globular clusters than in the galactic disk is suggestive, but as yet not compelling.
The WFPC2 Camera on board HST has been used to obtain high-resolution images of NGC 3610, a dynamically young elliptical galaxy. These observations supersede shorter, undithered HST observations where an intermediate-age population of globular clusters was first discovered. The new observations show the bimodal color distribution of globular clusters more clearly, with peaks at (V-I)o = 0.95 and 1.17. The luminosity function (LF) of the blue, metal-poor population of clusters in NGC 3610 turns over, consistent with a Gaussian distribution with a peak Mv ~= -7.0, similar to old globular-cluster…
We study the thermal and viscous stability of accretion flows in Low Mass Black Hole Binaries (LMBHBs). We consider a model in which an inner advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) is surrounded by a geometrically thin accretion disk, the transition between the two zones occurring at a radius R_tr. In all the known LMBHBs, R_tr appears to be such that the outer disks could suffer from a global thermal-viscous instability. This instability is likely to cause the transient behavior of these systems. However, in most cases, if R_tr were slightly larger than the estimated values, the systems wo…
The dwarf spheroidal galaxy in Ursa Minor is apparently dark-matter dominated, and is of very low surface brightness, with total luminosity only equal to that of a globular cluster. Indeed its dominant stellar population is old and metal-poor, very similar to that of a classical halo globular cluster in the Milky Way Galaxy. However, the environment in which its stars formed was clearly different from that in the globular clusters in the Milky Way Galaxy -- what was the stellar IMF in this external galaxy a long time ago? The fossil record of long-lived, low-mass stars contains the luminosity …
The stellar initial mass function at high redshift is an important defining property of the first stellar systems to form and may also play a role in various dark matter problems. We here determine the faint stellar luminosity function in an apparently dark-matter-dominated external galaxy in which the stars formed at high redshift. The Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy is a system with a particularly simple stellar population - all of the stars being old and metal-poor - similar to that of a classical halo globular cluster. A direct comparison of the faint luminosity functions of the UMi Sph…
An anomalous transient in the early Hubble-type (S0) galaxy Messier 85 (M85) in the Virgo cluster was discovered by Kulkarni et al. (2007) on 7 January 2006 that had very low luminosity (peak absolute R-band magnitude MR of about -12) that was constant over more than 80 days, red colour and narrow spectral lines, which seem inconsistent with those observed in any known class of transient events. Kulkarni et al. (2007) suggest an exotic stellar merger as the possible origin. An alternative explanation is that the transient in M85 was a type II-plateau supernova of extremely low luminosity, expl…
We present a short (~3.6 ks) Chandra/HRC-I observation of the globular cluster Terzan 1. This cluster is known to contain the bright neutron star low-mass X-ray binary X 1732-304 which was active during the 1980's and most of the 1990's. But a BeppoSAX observation performed in 1999 only showed a very weak source indicating that the source had become quiescent. During our Chandra observation, we detect one source with a 0.5-10 keV luminosity of approximately 1 - 2 x 10^{33} erg/s (for an assumed distance of 5.2 kpc). However, its position is not consistent with that of X 1732-304. We do not con…
The luminosity distribution of globular clusters shows a dramatic dependence on parent galaxy luminosity. Dwarf galaxies contain far more faint globulars than do luminous galaxies. This difference is significant at the 99.7% level. On the other hand the luminosity distribution of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies does not appear to depend strongly on their host's morphological type. The dichotomy of globular cluster masses occurs at a host galaxy mass of ~ 4 x 10^8 solar masses, which is almost two orders of magnitude lower than the onset of the dichotomy in globular color characteristics at…
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR5 photometric data with $120^{\circ} < α< 270^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ} < δ< 70^{\circ}$ are searched for new Milky Way companions or substructures in the Galactic halo. Five candidates are identified as overdensities of faint stellar sources that have color-magnitude diagrams similar to those of known globular clusters or dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The distance to each candidate is estimated by fitting suitable stellar isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams. Geometric properties and absolute magnitudes are roughly measured and used to determine whether the ca…
We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively softer as the metallicity of its environment increases. The one M31 globular cluster LMXB in our sample which has a metallicity greater than solar has spectral properties similar to those of LMXBs in the bulge of M31, …
We report time series and variability information for the optical identifications of X-ray sources in 47 Tuc reported in Paper I. The eight CVs with secure orbital periods have fainter accretion disks, in the V band, than field CVs with similar periods. These faint disks and the faint absolute magnitudes (Mv) of the 47 Tuc CVs suggests they have low accretion rates. The median Fx/Fopt value for the 47 Tuc CVs is higher than that of all known classes of field CV, because of both the faint Mv values and the relatively high X-ray luminosities (Lx). The latter are only seen in DQ Her systems in th…
Classical novae (CNe) have been found to represent the major class of supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) in our neighbour galaxy M 31. We determine properties and evolution of the two first SSSs ever discovered in the M 31 globular cluster (GC) system. We have used XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift observations of the centre region of M 31 to discover both SSS and to determine their X-ray light curves and spectra. We performed detailed analysis of XMM-Newton EPIC PN spectra of the source in Bol 111 (SS1) using blackbody and NLTE white dwarf (WD) atmosphere models. For the SSS in Bol 194 (SS2) we used o…
We studied the properties of the globular cluster systems of five early--type galaxies in the Fornax galaxy cluster: NGC 1374, NGC 1379, NGC 1387, NGC 1427, and the central giant elliptical NGC 1399. From the investigation of their number of globular clusters, specific frequency, color distribution, surface density profile, and spatial distribution, we conclude that our faint ellipticals have no more globular clusters than spirals of the same mass, and neither differ in their other properties. For these galaxies there is no need to imply a different formation scenario of the globular cluster s…
We report on intermittent X-ray pulsations with a frequency of 442.36 Hz from the neutron-star X-ray binary SAX J1748.9--2021 in the globular cluster NGC 6440. The pulsations were seen during both 2001 and 2005 outbursts of the source, but only intermittently, appearing and disappearing on timescales of hundreds of seconds. We find a suggestive relation between the occurrence of type-I X-ray bursts and the appearance of the pulsations but the relation is not strict. This behavior is very similar to that of the intermittent accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar HETE J1900.1--2455. The reason for t…
We compare the X-ray spectra and luminosities, in the 2-8 keV band, of known and suspected cataclysmic variables (CVs) in different environments, assessing the nature of these source populations. These objects include nearby CVs observed with ASCA; the Galactic Center X-ray source population identified by Muno et al.; and likely CVs identified in globular clusters. Both of the latter have been suggested to be dominated by magnetic CVs. We find that the brighter objects in both categories are likely to be magnetic CVs, but that the fainter objects are likely to include a substantial contributio…
Recent observations for the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the massive globular cluster Omega Centauri have shown that it has a striking double main sequence (MS), with a minority population of bluer and fainter MS well separated from a majority population of MS stars. Here we confirm, with the most up-to-date Y2 isochrones, that this special feature can only be reproduced by assuming a large variation (Delta Y = 0.15) of primordial helium abundance among several distinct populations in this cluster. We further show that the same helium enhancement required for this special feature on the …
We have used HST/FOS to study faint UV stars in the core of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6397. We confirm the presence of a 4th cataclysmic variable (CV) in NGC 6397 (CV 4), and we use the photometry of Cool et al. (1998) to present evidence that CVs 1--4 all have faint disks and probably low accretion rates. By combining these results with new UV spectra of CV 1 and the published spectra of Grindlay et al. (1995) we present new evidence that CVs 1--3 may be DQ Her systems, and we show that CV 4 may either be a dwarf nova or another magnetic system. Another possibility is that the CVs could…
We report on the detection of UV variability and the persistence of X-ray faintness of the X-ray transient Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy WPVS 007 based on the first year of monitoring this AGN with Swift between 2005 October and 2007 January. WPVS 007 has been an unusual source. While being X-ray bright during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey it has been extremely faint in all following X-ray observations. Swift also finds this NLS1 to be X-ray faint and not detected in the Swift X-Ray Telescope at an 3$σ$ upper limit of $2.6\times 10^{-17}$ W m$^{-2}$ in the 0.3-10.0 keV band and confirms that the AGN…
We present the results of a search for variable stars in the faint sparse globular cluster E3. We have found two variable stars: an SX Phe variable (V1) and a W UMa eclipsing binary (V2). We have applied period-luminosity and period-color-luminosity relations to the variables to obtain their distance moduli. V1 seems to be a blue straggler belonging to E3, based on its distance modulus and location on the CMD. V2 is probably located behind the cluster, in the Milky Way halo. We also present V/B-V and V/V-I color magnitude diagrams of E3.
We report on a deep XMM-Newton EPIC observation of the globular cluster Omega Cen performed on August 13th, 2001. We have detected 11 and 27 faint X-ray sources in the core and half mass radii, searching down to a luminosity of 1.3 x 10^{31} erg s^{-1} in the 0.5-5 keV range. Most sources have bolometric X-ray luminosities between ~ 10^{31}-10^{32} erg s^{-1}. We present the color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams of the source sample, as well as high-quality EPIC spectra of the brightest objects of the field; including the two candidate Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) in the core and the quie…
