It is shown that globular clusters and the dwarf spheroidal companions of the Galaxy have a different distribution of flattening values, and appear to occupy adjacent regions of the M_v versus log R_h plane that can be separated by what will be referred to as the Shapley line. Surprisingly, typical dwarf spheroidal companions to the Milky Way System are fainter than the average Galactic globular cluster.
Traditionally globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies have been distinguished by using one or more of the following criteria: (1) mass, (2) luminosity, (3) size, (4) mass-to-light ratio and (5) spread in metallicity. However, a few recently discovered objects show some overlap between the domains in parameter space that are occupied by galaxies and clusters. In the present note it is shown that ellipticity can, in some cases, be used to help distinguish between globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies.
Most of the globular clusters in the main body of the Galactic halo were formed almost simultaneously. However, globular cluster formation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies appears to have extended over a significant fraction of a Hubble time. This suggests that the factors which suppressed late-time formation of globulars in the main body of the Galactic halo were not operative in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Possibly the presence of significant numbers of ``young'' globulars at R_{GC} > 15 kpc can be accounted for by the assumption that many of these objects were formed in Sagittarius-like (but not…
The possibility that the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal might have formed as a Searle-Zinn fragment in the outer halo of the Galaxy is discussed. Arguments in favor of this hypothesis are: (1) The luminosity distribution of globular clusters in both Sagittarius and in the outer halo (Rgc > 80 kpc), appear to be bimodal with peaks near MV ~ -5 and MV ~ -10, and (2) the globular clusters in both Sgr, and in the outer halo, have a significantly larger age spread than do the globulars in the inner halo of the Galaxy. However, a counter argument is that only one of the four globulars associated with …
We present the results of moderate resolution spectroscopy for a globular cluster in the M81 group dwarf spheroidal galaxy DDO~78. The DDO78 globular cluster, 4 Milky Way globular clusters, spectroscopic and radial velocity standards were observed with the Long-slit spectrograph of the 6-m telescope (SAO RAS, Russia). Lick spectrophotometric indices were determined in the bandpasses adopted by Burstein et al. (1984). We have derived the mean metallicity of the globular cluster in DDO78 to be [Fe/H] = -1.6 +- 0.1 dex by taking the weighted mean of metallicities obtained from the strength of sev…
We present deep V,I CCD photometry of the globular cluster Terzan 8, recently found to be a member of the globular cluster system of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We accurately estimate the metallicity of Ter 8 and provide the first direct determination of the color excess toward this cluster. Our robust age estimate confirms that this cluster is indeed coeval with typical galactic globulars of comparable metal content, and thus it is probably significantly older than at least two other Sagittarius clusters, Terzan 7 and Arp 2. The implications of this result on the star formation h…
The detection of stars in the process of being tidally removed from globular clusters and dwarf spheroidals in the Galaxy's halo provides a strong constraint on their mass to light ratios and on the extent of their possible dark matter halos. If a significant dark matter component existed either within or beyond the observed stellar distribution, then stars would not be removed. We use numerical simulations to study mass loss from two component star clusters orbiting within a deeper potential. We find a global upper limit on the mass to light ratios of globular clusters, M/L \lsim 2.5, and rul…
We report the abundance analysis of one red giant branch star in the metal-poor outer halo globular cluster NGC 5694. We obtain [Fe/H] = -1.93, based on the ionized lines, and our metallicity measurement is in good agreement with previous estimates. We find that [Ca+Ti/2Fe] and [Cu/Fe] of NGC 5694 are about 0.3 -- 0.4 dex lower than other globular clusters with similar metallicities, but similar to some LMC clusters and stars in some dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Differences persist, however, in the abundances of neutron capture elements. The unique chemical abundance pattern and the large Galact…
We take the established relation between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity, and radio luminosity and show that intermediate mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist at the centers of globular clusters, will be easily identifiable objects in deep radio observations. We show that the radio observations will be far more senstive than any possible X-ray observations. We also discuss the likely optical photometric and spectroscopic appearance of such systems in the event that radio detections are made.
We present a high resolution (R ~ 43000) abundance analysis of a total of nine stars in three of the five globular clusters associated with the nearby Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These three clusters (1, 2 and 3) trace the oldest, most metal-poor stellar populations in Fornax. We determine abundances of O, Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Y, Ba, La, Nd and Eu in most of these stars, and for some stars also Mn and La. We demonstrate that classical indirect methods (isochrone fitting and integrated spectra) of metallicity determination lead to values of [Fe/H] which are 0.3 to 0.5 dex too hig…
We have compiled a sample of globular clusters with high quality stellar abundances from the literature to compare to the chemistries of stars in the Galaxy and those in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Of the 45 globular clusters examined, 29 also have kinematic information. Most of the globular clusters belong to the Galactic halo, however a signficant number have disk kinematics or belong to the bulge. Focusing on the [alpha/Fe] and light r-process element ratios, we find that most globular cluster stars mimic those of the field stars of similar metallicities, and neither clearly resembles the pr…
The dark matter dominated Fornax dwarf spheroidal has five globular clusters orbiting at ~1 kpc from its centre. In a cuspy CDM halo the globulars would sink to the centre from their current positions within a few Gyrs, presenting a puzzle as to why they survive undigested at the present epoch. We show that a solution to this timing problem is to adopt a cored dark matter halo. We use numerical simulations and analytic calculations to show that, under these conditions, the sinking time becomes many Hubble times; the globulars effectively stall at the dark matter core radius. We conclude that t…
We suggest that the majority of the "young", so--called "second parameter" globular clusters (SPGCs) have originated in the outer Galactic halo due to a process other than a tidal disruption of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. Basic observational evidence regarding both the dSphs and the SPGCs, coupled with the latest data about a rather large relative number of such clusters among globulars in M33 and their low portion in M31, seems to be consistent with the suspected process. It might have taken place within the system of the most massive galaxies of the Local Group (LG) at the earliest…
Photometry of a large field around the young globular cluster Palomar 12 has revealed the main-sequence of a low surface-brightness stellar system. This main-sequence is indicative of a stellar population that varies significantly in metallicity and/or age, but in the mean is more metal poor than Pal 12. Under different assumptions for the properties of this population, we find distances from the Sun in the range 17-24 kpc, which encompasses the distance to Pal 12, $19.0\pm0.9$ kpc. The stellar system is also detected in a field 2$\arcdeg$ North of Pal 12, which indicates it has a minimum diam…
CONTEXT: Until now, only one planetary nebula (PN) has been known in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. AIMS: The discovery of a second PN candidate, associated with one of the 5 globular clusters in the Fornax dwarf, is reported. METHODS: Spectra of the globular cluster H5, obtained with the UVES echelle spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope, show [O III] line emission at a radial velocity consistent with membership of the Fornax dwarf. A possible counterpart of the [O III] emission is identified in archival images from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Teles…
We present radial surface brightness profiles for all five globular clusters in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy, and for the four present members of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These profiles are derived from archival Hubble Space Telescope observations, and have been calculated using the same techniques with which we measured profiles in our previous studies of LMC and SMC clusters (astro-ph/0209031 and astro-ph/0209046 respectively), apart from some small modifications. From the surface brightness profiles, we have determined structural parameters for each cluster, including …
Analyses of their internal stellar kinematics imply that the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) companion galaxies to the Milky Way are among the most dark-matter dominated systems known. Should there be significant dark matter in the form of faint stars in these systems, the stellar luminosity function must be very different from that of a similar metallicity globular cluster, for which there is no evidence for dark matter. We present the faint stellar luminosity function in the Ursa Minor dSph, down to a luminosity corresponding to roughly 0.45 M_sun, derived from new deep HST/WFPC2 data. We find a rem…
We present new Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the massive globular cluster M54 (NGC 6715) and the superposed core of the tidally disrupted Sagittarius (Sgr) dSph galaxy as part of the ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters. Our deep (F606W~26.5), high-precision photometry yields an unprecedentedly detailed color-magnitude diagram showing the extended blue horizontal branch and multiple main sequences of the M54+Sgr system. The distance and reddening to M54 are revised usingboth isochrone and main-sequence fitting to (m-M)_0=17.27 and E(B-V)=0.15. Preliminary assessment finds the M54+Sg…
The globular clusters that we observe in galaxies may be only a fraction of the initial population. Among the evolutionary influences on the population is the destruction of globular clusters by tidal forces as the cluster moves through the field of influence of a disk, a bulge, and/or a putative nuclear component (black hole). We have conducted a series of N-body simulations of globular clusters on bound and marginally bound orbits through potentials that include black hole and spheroidal components. The degree of concentration of the spheroidal component can have a considerable impact on the…
Low-mass stars, those with main-sequence lifetimes that are of order the age of the Universe, provide unique constraints on the Initial Mass Function (IMF) when they formed. Star counts in systems with simple star-formation histories are particularly straightforward to interpret, and those in old systems allow one to determine the low-mass stellar IMF at large look-back times and thus at high redshift. We present the faint stellar luminosity function (based on optical HST data) in an external galaxy, the Ursa Minor dwarf Spheroidal (dSph). This relatively-nearby (distance 70kpc) companion gala…
We report the discovery of SDSSJ1049+5103, an overdensity of resolved blue stars at (α_{2000}, δ_{2000}) = (162.343, 51.051). This object appears to be an old, metal-poor stellar system at a distance of 45 +/- 10 kpc, with a half-light radius of 23$\pm 10$ pc and an absolute magnitude of M_V = -3.0^{+2.0}_{-0.7}. One star that is likely associated with this companion has an SDSS spectrum confirming it as a blue horizontal branch star at 48 kpc. The color-magnitude diagram of SDSSJ1049+5103 contains few, if any, horizontal or red giant branch stars, similar to the anomalously faint globular clu…
We report the discovery of a sizeable, previously unknown variable star population in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal globular clusters NGC 5634, Arp 2 and Terzan 8. Location, preliminary pulsation periods and B-band light curves in relative flux units are provided for all these stars.
In the context of dwarf spheroidal galaxies it is hard to firmly disentangle a genuine Blue Stragglers (BSS) population from a normal young main (MS) sequence. This difficulty is persistent. For a sample of 9 non-star forming Local Group dwarf galaxies we compute the ``BSS frequency'' and compare it with that found in the Milky Way globular/open clusters and halo. The comparison shows that the BSS-frequency in dwarf galaxies, at any given Mv, is always higher than that in globular clusters of similar luminosities. Moreover, the estimated BSS-frequency for the lowest luminosity dwarf galaxies i…
Long-slit observations of 4 dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the M81 group are presented. We have obtained a heliocentric velocity of globular cluster candidate located near the center of DDO78 to be +55 +- 10 km/s by cross-correlation with template stars. We estimated a heliocentric radial velocity of -116 +- 21 km/s for an HII region seen in the K 61. A red diffuse object near the K64 center is found to be a remote galaxy with a heliocentric velocity of +46530 km/s.
037-B327 is of interest because it is both the most luminous and the most highly reddened cluster known in M31. Deep observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope provide photometric data in the F606W band, and also show that this cluster is crossed by a dust lane. We determined the structural parameters of 037-B327 by fitting the observed surface brightness distribution to a King model with r_c=0.72" (=2.69 pc), and r_t=5.87" (=21.93 pc), and a concentration index c=log(r_t/r_c)=0.91. The surface brightness profile appears to be essentially flat within 0.25" …
Globular clusters with composite color-magnitude diagrams, such as NGC 1851, NGC 2808 and Fornax No. 3, might have formed by mergers. It is suggested that each of these objects had two parent clusters, one with a red horizontal branch and another with a blue horizontal branch. Such mergers could have occurred if both ancestral objects were originally members of a single dwarf spheroidal galaxy in which the internal velocity dispersion was low.
The stellar initial mass function at high redshift is an important defining property of the first stellar systems to form and may also play a role in various dark matter problems. We here determine the faint stellar luminosity function in an apparently dark-matter-dominated external galaxy in which the stars formed at high redshift. The Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy is a system with a particularly simple stellar population - all of the stars being old and metal-poor - similar to that of a classical halo globular cluster. A direct comparison of the faint luminosity functions of the UMi Sph…
We derived the distance to the central region of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy from the Red Giant Branch Tip. The obtained distance modulus is $(m-M)_0=17.10\pm0.15$, corresponding to a heliocentric distance $D=26.30\pm1.8$ Kpc. This estimate is in good agreement with the distance obtained from RR Lyrae stars of the globular cluster M~54, located in the core of the Sgr galaxy, once the most accurate estimate of the cluster metallicity and the most recent calibration of the $M_V(RRLy) vs.[Fe/H]$ relation are adopted.
Star luminosity function, already recognized as an age indicator for old galactic globular clusters, can be used to contrains the age of younger stellar systems like the nearby dwarfs spheroidal Leo I. We compare the observed luminosity function of Leo I, presented by Lee et al. 1993, with theoretical expectations for three selected ages, 1, 1.5 and 2 billion years, deriving an age of about 1.5 Gyr. This result does not appear critically affected by assumptions about the cluster distance modulus or the Initial Mass Function.
Our current knowledge of M31's dwarf spheroidal companions is reviewed. Two topics of recent interest constitute the bulk of this review. First, color-magnitude diagrams reaching below the horizontal branch have been constructed for two M31 dwarf spheroidals based on images from HST/WFPC2. The horizontal branches are predominantly red in both galaxies, redder than expected for their metallicity based on Galactic globular clusters. Thus, the second parameter effect is seen in the M31 halo. Second, recent surveys have revealed three new dwarf spheroidal companions to M31. Thus, dwarf spheroidal …
We use infrared Color Magnitude Diagrams from the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) to search for stars belonging to the tidal stream of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) around selected Galactic globular clusters. Statistically significant detections are presented for the cases of Pal 12 and NGC 4147, strongly supporting the idea that these clusters are associated with the Sgr Stream and that they were previous members of the Sgr dSph galaxy.
We present the first results of a variable star search in the field and in the globular clusters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Variable stars were identified using the Image Subtraction Technique (Alard 2000) on time-series data obtained with the ESO 2.2 m and the Magellan 6.5 m telescopes. The variable star sample includes RR Lyrae stars, Dwarf Cepheids and Anomalous Cepheids. The pulsation properties (namely: periods, light curves, period-amplitude relations and classification in Oosterhoff types) of Fornax variables from the present study are discussed in some detail.
The Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal galaxy is the nearest neighbor of the Milky Way. Moving along a short period quasi-polar orbit within the Halo, it is being destroyed by the tidal interaction with our Galaxy, losing its stellar content along a huge stellar stream. We study the detailed chemical composition of 12 giant stars in the Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal main body, together with 5 more in the associated globular cluster Terzan 7 by means of high resolution VLT-UVES spectra. Abundances are derived for up to 21 elements from O to Nd, by fitting lines EW or line profiles against ATLAS 9 mode…
The Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 camera has been used to image Andromeda III, a dwarf spheroidal companion (dSph) to M31. The resulting color-magnitude (c-m) diagrams reveal the morphology of the horizontal branch (HB) in this dwarf galaxy. We find that like Andromeda I and Andromeda II, and like most of the Galactic dSph companions, the HB morphology of And III is predominantly red, redder than that of both And I and And II despite And III having a lower mean metallicity. We interpret this red HB morphology as indicating that the bulk of the And III population is ~3 Gyr younger than the age o…
The globular cluster system of a typical spheroidal galaxy makes up about 0.25% of the total galaxy mass (McLaughlin 1999). This is roughly the same mass fraction as contained in the nuclear star clus- ter (or stellar nucleus) present in most nearby low-mass galaxies. Motivated by this "coincidence", this Letter discusses a scenario in which globular clusters of present-day galaxies are the surviving nuclei of the dwarf galaxies that - according to the hierarchical merging paradigm of galaxy forma- tion - constitute the "building blocks" of present-day massive galaxies. This scenario, which wa…
Fifty-seven nearby low surface brightness dwarf galaxies were searched for globular cluster candidates (GCCs) using Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging in V and I. The sample consists of 18 dwarf spheroidal (dSph), 36 irregular (dIrr), and 3 "transition" type (dIrr/dSph) galaxies with angular sizes less than 3.7 kpc situated at distances 2-6 Mpc in the field and in the nearby groups: M81, Centaurus A, Sculptor, Canes Venatici I cloud. We find that ~50% of dSph, dIrr/dSph, and dIrr galaxies contain GCCs. The fraction of GCCs located near the center of dwarf spheroidal galaxies is >2 times high…
We present new measurements of central line-strength indices (namely Mg2, <Fe>, and Hbeta and gradients for a sample of 6 bright spheroidal galaxies (Sph's) in the Virgo cluster. Comparison with similar measurements for elliptical galaxies (E's), galactic globular clusters (GGC's), and stellar population models yield the following results: (1) In contrast with bright E's, bright Sph's are consistent with solar abundance [Mg/Fe] ratios; (2) Bright Sph's exhibit metallicities ranging from values typical for metal-rich GGC's to those for E's; (3) Although absolute mean ages are quite model depend…
We report results of a photometric survey with the WIYN telescope for carbon stars in the M 31 dwarf spheroidal (dSph) companions And III, And V, And VI, and And VII, as well as in the relatively isolated Local Group dSph Cetus. We find three carbon-star candidates in And VII and one carbon star in each And VI and Cetus. Comparing the carbon star content with other Local Group dwarf galaxies, we argue against the presence of substantial intermediate-age stellar populations in the all of the galaxies surveyed with the exception of And VII. We discuss these results in the context of the origin o…
I point out that the Oosterhoff dichotomy for globular cluster and field RR Lyrae (RRL) stars may place the strongest constraints so far on the number of dwarf spheroidal-like protogalactic fragments that may have contributed to the formation of the Galactic halo. The first calibration of the RRL period-luminosity relation in I, J, H, K taking evolutionary effects into account is provided. Problems in the interpretation of RRL light curves and evolutionary properties are briefly reviewed.
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR5 photometric data with $120^{\circ} < α< 270^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ} < δ< 70^{\circ}$ are searched for new Milky Way companions or substructures in the Galactic halo. Five candidates are identified as overdensities of faint stellar sources that have color-magnitude diagrams similar to those of known globular clusters or dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The distance to each candidate is estimated by fitting suitable stellar isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams. Geometric properties and absolute magnitudes are roughly measured and used to determine whether the ca…
We study the chemical composition of 5 giant stars in the globular cluster Terzan 7 associated with the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph), based on high resolution UVES-VLT spectra. We confirm the metallicity found by previous high resolution investigations: [Fe/H] ~ -0.6. We also show that this cluster displays the same low alpha-element to iron ratio found in Sgr dSph field stars of similar metallicity, as well as the same low Ni/Fe ratio. These chemical signatures are characteristic of the Sgr dSph system, and appear to be shared both by the globular cluster Pal 12, which was m…
Updated data of the 153 Galactic globular clusters are used to readdress fundamental parameters of the Milky Way. We build a reduced sample, decontaminated of the clusters younger than 10Gyr, those with retrograde orbits and/or evidence of relation to dwarf galaxies. The 33 metal-rich globular clusters of the reduced sample extend basically to the Solar circle and distribute over a region with projected axial-ratios typical of an oblate spheroidal, $\rmΔx:Δy:Δz\approx1.0:0.9:0.4$. The 81 metal-poor globular clusters span a nearly spherical region of axial-ratios $\approx1.0:1.0:0.8$ extending …
J, H, and K_S band data from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) are used to study the effects of differential reddening across the three massive Galactic globular clusters Omega Centauri, NGC 6388, and NGC 6441. Evidence is found that variable extinction may produce false detections of tidal tails around Omega Centauri. We also investigate what appears to be relatively strong differential reddening towards NGC 6388 and NGC 6441, and find that differential extinction may be exaggerating the need for a metallicity spread to explain the width of the red giant branches for these two clusters. F…
We discuss the prospects for detecting faint intermediate-mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist in the cores of globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We briefly summarize the difficulties of stellar dynamical searches, then show that recently discovered relations between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity imply that in most cases, these black holes should be more easily detected in the radio than in the X-rays. Finally, we show upper limits from some radio observations of globular clusters, and discuss the possibility that the radio source in the cor…
We present ground-based and HST WFPC2 imaging of the nearby low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal galaxy DDO 44. For the first time DDO 44 was resolved into stars. The resulting color-magnitude diagram for about 1290 stars shows the red giant branch with a tip at I=(23.55+-0.15) mag, which yields a distance of (3.2+-0.2) Mpc consistent with membership of DDO 44 in the NGC 2403 group. The linear separation of DDO 44 from NGC 2403 is 75 kpc on the sky and (30+-450) kpc along the line of sight. The relationship between the dwarf galaxy's absolute R magnitude of -13.1 mag, its central surface br…
We present low resolution, integrated Keck spectra of the five globular clusters (GCs) of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find a tentative age spread among the clusters, with the GC H5 younger by 2-3 Gyr than the others. The clusters generally appear to be very metal-poor ([Fe/H] ~ -1.8), with the cluster H4 slightly more metal-rich at [Fe/H] = -1.5. We speculate that cluster H4 is similar to the Galactic GC Ruprecht 106, which lacks the [alpha/Fe] enhancement typical among metal-poor GCs in the Milky Way. High-resolution spectroscopy of individual cluster and field stars will be needed…
We present our analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) observations in F555W (~V) and F814W (~I) of the central region of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The V versus V-I color-magnitude diagram features a sparsely populated blue horizontal branch, a steep thin red giant branch, and a narrow subgiant branch. The main sequence reaches ~2 magnitudes below the main-sequence turnoff (V_TO ~ 23.27 +- 0.11 mag) of the median stellar population. We compare the fiducial sequence of Ursa Minor with the fiducial sequence of the Galactic globular cluster …
Mergers of globular clusters (GCs) once associated with dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies have recently been suggested as an explanation for the bimodal horizontal branches (HBs) of some Galactic GCs, most notably NGC 1851, NGC 2808, and NGC 6229. Through analysis of the available color-magnitude diagrams for the GCs in the Fornax and Sagittarius dSph satellites of the Milky Way, as well as their metallicity distributions, we argue that the merger of two GCs would most likely produce a bimodal distribution in red giant branch (RGB) colors, or at least a significant broadening of the RGB, due to…
We focus on two aspects of Omega Cen that are rather uncharacteristic of globular clusters: its metallicity distribution and its orbit. We use (1) a Washington (M-T_2,M)_o color-magnitude diagram containing 130,000 stars, (2) DDO51 photometry to separate out giants from field dwarfs, and (3) a mapping of (M-T_2,M-DDO51)_o colors to [Fe/H] to derive a metallicity distribution function (MDF) for Omega Cen. The MDF is corrected for field giant contamination by a radial velocity membership study of a subsample of stars spanning all abundances. As with previous studies, the MDF is very wide with a …
We review Galactic halo formation theories and supporting evidence, in particular kinematics and detailed chemical abundances of stars in some relevant globular clusters as well as Local Group dwarf galaxies. Outer halo red HB clusters tend to have large eccentricities and inhabit the area populated by dwarf spheroidal stars, favoring an extraGalactic origin. Old globulars show the full range of eccentricities, while younger ones seem to have preferentially high eccentricities, again hinting at their extraGalactic origin. We compare detailed abundances of a variety of elements between the halo…
We have measured the absolute proper motion of the young globular cluster Pal 12 with respect to background galaxies, using plate material spanning a 40-year time baseline, and measuring stars down to a magnitude V~22. The measured absolute proper motion has an uncertainty of 0.3 mas/yr in each coordinate. Pal 12's young age for a globular cluster led to the hypothesis that the cluster originated in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and was later captured by the Milky Way (Lin and Richer 1992). Here we investigate this hypothesis using the complete kinematical data. We present the orbital chara…
We present a CCD survey of variable stars in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. This survey, which has the largest areal coverage since the original variable star survey by Baade & Swope, includes photometry for 270 RR Lyrae stars, 9 anomalous Cepheids, 2 eclipsing binaries, and 12 slow, irregular red variables, as well as 30 background QSOs. Twenty-six probable double-mode RR Lyrae stars were identified. Observed parameters, including mean V and I magnitudes, V amplitudes, and periods, have been derived. Photometric metallicities of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars were calculated according to the …
The relations between the luminosities $M_{V}$, the metallicities $[Fe/H]$, the Galactocentric radii $R$, and the central concentration indices $c$ of Galactic globular clusters are discussed. It is found that the most luminous clusters rarely have collapsed cores. The reason for this might be that the core collapse time scales for such populous clusters are greater than the age of the Galaxy. Among those clusters, for which the structure has not been modified by core collapse, there is a correlation between central concentration and integrated luminosity, in the sense that the most luminous c…
Deep images in the 10 micron spectral region have been obtained for five massive Galactic globular clusters, NGC 104 (=47 Tuc), NGC 362, NGC 5139 (omega Cen), NGC 6388, NGC 7078 (=M15) and NGC 6715 (=M54) in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal using ISOCAM in 1997. A significant sample of bright giants have an ISOCAM counterpart but only < 20% of these have a strong mid-IR excess indicative of dusty circumstellar envelopes. From a combined physical and statistical analysis we derive mass loss rates and frequency. We find that i) significant mass loss occurs only at the very end of the Red Giant B…
g', r', and i' images obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini North are used to investigate the metallicity and stellar content of the M31 dwarf spheroidal companion galaxy And V. Red giant branch (RGB) stars are traced out to radii in excess of 126 arcsec from the galaxy center, indicating that And V extends over a diameter approaching 1 kpc. The mean g'-i' color of the RGB does not change with radius. Based on the slope of the RGB in the (i', g'-i') color-magnitude diagram we conclude that [Fe/H] = -2.2 +/- 0.1. This metallicity is lower than earlier estimates, an…
Using archival imaging from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we investigate the stellar populations of the Local Group dwarf spheroidal Andromeda V - a companion satellite galaxy of M31. The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) extends from above the first ascent red giant branch (RGB) tip to approximately one magnitude below the horizontal branch (HB). The steep well-defined RGB is indicative of a metal-poor system while the HB is populated predominantly redward of the RR Lyrae instability strip. Utilizing Galactic globular cluster fiducial sequences as a referenc…
The amount of dark matter in the four galactic dwarf spheroidals with large mass-to-light ratios is investigated. Sextans has a cut-off radius which is equal to the expected tidal radius, assuming a high mass-to-light ratio. This satellite very likely is dark matter dominated. Carina, Ursa Minor and Draco, on the other hand, cannot contain a dominating dark matter component if the observed 'extra-tidal' stars are located exterior to the tidal radii of these systems. The evidence for tidal stripping in the absence of dark matter is also supported by the fact that the observed cut-off radii of a…
Globular clusters in the outer halo (R_gc > 15 kpc) are found to be systematically fainter than those at smaller Galactocentric distances. Within the outer halo the compact clusters with half-light radii R_h < 10 pc are only found at R_gc < 40 kpc, while on the other hand the larger clusters with R_h > 10 pc are encountered at all Galactocentric distances. Among the compact clusters with R_h < 10 pc that have R_gc > 15 kpc, there are two objects with surprisingly high metallicities. One of these is Terzan 7, which is a companion of the Sagittarius dwarf. The other is Palomar 1. The data on the…
We demonstrate that there is a clear statistical correlation between the (X,Y,Z,V_r) phase-space distribution of the outer halo Galactic globular clusters (having 10 kpc <= R_GC <= 40 kpc) and the orbital path of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph), as derived by Ibata & Lewis. At least 4 of the sample of 35 globular clusters in this distance range were formerly members of the Sgr galaxy (at the 95 % confidence level), and are now distributed along the Sgr Stream, a giant tidal structure that surrounds the Milky Way. This is the first instance that a statistically significant st…
The Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr) and a few paculiar Galactic Globular Clusters (GGC) can be considered as building blocks of theGalactic Halo. We present a series of results based on a wide field photometry of the Sgr system and the GGC M22. In particular for Sgr we present: (1) the detection of the RGB-bump, a feature that together with the shape of the RGB can be used to constrain the allowed range of age and metallicity and (2) the detection of a clear blue horizontal branch which probes the existance of a metal poor population. In the case of M22 we present clear evidence that differ…
Some of the properties of the globular clusters in NGC 5128 are compared to those of Galactic globular clusters. Assuming the color- metallicity relations that hold for Galactic globular clusters then the metal-poor clusters in NGC 5128 that have [Fe/H] < -1.80 are significantly fainter than are the more metal-rich globulars in that galaxy. No such metallicity dependent luminosity difference is observed among the globular clusters associated with the Milky Way. Furthermore the NGC 5128 cluster sample contains two objects that, on the basis of their observed colors, appear to be super metal-poo…
