The Casimir forces between two plates moving parallel to each other are found by calculating the vacuum electromagnetic stress tensor. The perpendicular force between the plates is modified by the motion but there is no lateral force on the plates. Electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations do not therefore give rise to "quantum friction" in this case, contrary to previous assertions. The result shows that the Casimir-Polder force on a particle moving at constant speed parallel to a plate also has no lateral component.
The analysis of uniformly longitudinally extended detector is performed and it is shown that the response of such a detector does not differ from the response of the Unruh detector, but the its excitation is caused not by the thermal bath, but by interaction with the fluctuations of the quantum field by virtual quanta.
We study the motion-induced radiation due to the non-relativistic motion of an atom, coupled to the vacuum electromagnetic field by an electric dipole term, in the presence of a static graphene plate. After computing the probability of emission for an accelerated atom in empty space, we evaluate the corrections due to the presence of the plate. We show that the effect of the plate is to increase the probability of emission when the atom is near the plate and oscillates along a direction perpendicular to it. On the contrary, for parallel oscillations, there is a suppression. We also evaluate th…
Casimir Friction Between Polarizable Particle and Half-Space with Radiation Damping and Image Damping at Zero Temperature
J. D { \bf 68},61(2014)],并设法与Pendry(1997)、Volokitin和Wavesson(2007)以及Barton(2011)获得的结果基本一致。
We study the fluctuation-electromagnetic interaction and dynamics of a small spinning polarizable particle moving with a relativistic velocity in a vacuum background of arbitrary temperature. Using the standard formalism of the fluctuation electromagnetic theory, a complete set of equations describing the decelerating tangential force, the components of the torque and the intensity of nonthermal and thermal radiation is obtained along with equations describing the dynamics of translational and rotational motion, and the kinetics of heating. An interplay between various parameters is discussed.…
We study quantum friction and Casimir forces with a full-relativistic formalism for atoms modelled as Unruh-DeWitt detectors in the presence of arbitrary macroscopic objects. We consider the general case of atoms with arbitrary relativistic trajectories in arbitrary quantum states (including coherent superpositions) close to objects that impose arbitrary boundary conditions. Particularizing for conducting plates, we show that, for relative velocities close to the speed of light, the quantum friction diverges while the Casimir force is almost independent of the velocity. Since we include the ef…
Casimir-Lifshitz force between moving plates at different temperatures
在[New J. Phys.
We study the phenomenon of quantum friction in a system consisting of a polarizable atom moving at a constant speed parallel to a metallic plate. The metal is described using a charged hydrodynamic model for the electrons. This model featuring long-range interactions is appropriate for a clean metal in a temperature range where scattering due to Coulomb interactions dominates over the scattering of electron by impurities. We find that a quantum friction force between the atom and the metal surface exists even in the absence of intrinsic damping in the metal, but that it only starts once the ve…
Casimir-Polder interactions cause energy and momentum exchange between microscopic and macroscopic bodies, a process mediated by quantum fluctuations in the coupled matter-electromagnetic field system. The dynamics of such effects are yet to be experimentally investigated due to the dominance of static effects at currently attainable atomic velocities. However, Y. Guo and Z. Jacob [\textit{Opt. Express}, 22:26193-26202, 2014] have proposed a non-static two-plate set-up where quantum fluctuation mediated effects have a strong velocity-dependent resonance, leading to a giant friction force on th…
In this paper we study the dissipative effects and decoherence induced on a particle moving at constant speed in front of a dielectric plate in quantum vacuum, developing a Closed-Time-Path (CTP) integral formulation in order to account for the corrections to these phenomena generated by finite temperatures. We compute the frictional force of the moving particle and find that it contains two different contributions: a pure quantum term due to quantum fluctuations (even present at vanishing temperatures) and a temperature dependent component generated by thermal fluctuations (bigger contributio…
Quantum fluctuations can induce a friction on a neutral but polarizable particle and cause it to radiate energy even if the particle is moving in free space filled with blackbody radiation, and is not in contact with or close to any surface or other object. We explore the energetics of such a particle moving uniformly in vacuum, continuing our previous investigations of quantum friction. The intrinsic polarizability of the particle is considered to be purely real before it is dressed by radiation. The particle is then guaranteed to be in the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS), where it absorbs…
We study quantum dissipative effects that result from the non-relativistic motion of an atom, coupled to a quantum real scalar field, in the presence of a static imperfect mirror. Our study consists of two parts: in the first, we consider accelerated motion in free space, namely, switching off the coupling to the mirror. This results in motion induced radiation, which we quantify via the vacuum persistence amplitude. In the model we use, the atom is described by a quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO). We show that its natural frequency poses a threshold which separates different regimes, involvin…
