Effect of intrinsic instability of cantilevers on static mode Atomic Force Spectroscopy

We show that the static force spectroscopy curve is significantly modified due to presence of intrinsic cantilever instability. This instability acts in tandem with such instabilities like water bridge or molecular bond rupture and makes the static force spectroscopy curve (including "jump-off-contact") dependent on the step-size of the movement of sample stage. A model has been proposed to explain the data. This has been further validated by applying an electric field between tip and substrate which modifies the tip-substrate interaction.

A method to quantitatively evaluate Hamaker constant using the jump-into-contact effect in Atomic Force microscopy

We find that the jump-into-contact of the cantilever in the atomic force microscope (AFM) is caused by an inherent instability in the motion of the AFM cantilever. The analysis is based on a simple model of the cantilever moving in a nonlinear force field. We show that the jump-into-contact distance can be used to find the interaction of the cantilever tip with the surface. In the specific context of the attractive van der Waals interaction, this method can be realized as a new method of measuring the Hamaker constant for materials. Intrinsic Instability of Aberration-Corrected Electron Microscopes

Aberration-corrected microscopes with sub-atomic resolution will impact broad areas of science and technology. However, the experimentally observed lifetime of the corrected state is just a few minutes. Here we show that the corrected state is intrinsically unstable; the higher its quality, the more unstable it is. Intrinsic structural instabilities of domain walls driven by gradient couplings: meandering anferrodistortive-ferroelectric domain walls in BiFeO3

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach, we predict the intrinsic instability of the ferroelectric-ferroelastic domain walls in the multiferroic BiFeO3 emerging from the interplay between the gradient terms of the antiferrodistortive and ferroelectric order parameters at the walls. Oscillatory and tip-splitting instabilities in 2D dynamic fracture: The roles of intrinsic material length and time scales

An intrinsic nonlinear scale governs oscillations in rapid fracture

When branching is suppressed, rapid cracks undergo a dynamic instability from a straight to an oscillatory path at a critical velocity $v_c$. In a systematic experimental study using a wide range of different brittle materials, we first show how the opening profiles of straight cracks scale with the size $\ell_{nl}$ of the nonlinear zone surrounding a crack's tip. Confinement effect enhanced Stoner ferromagnetic instability in monolayer 1T-VSe2

Monolayer 1T-VSe2 has been reported as a room-temperature ferromagnet. In this work, by using first-principles calculations, we unveil that the ferromagnetism in monolayer 1T-VSe2 is originated from its intrinsic huge Stoner instability enhanced by the confinement effect, which can eliminate the interlayer coupling, and lead to a drastic increase of the density of states at the Fermi level due to the presence of Van Hove singularity. Effects of intrinsic strain on the structural stability and mechanical properties of phosphorene nanotubes

Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we explore the structural stability and mechanical integrity of phosphorene nanotubes (PNTs), where the intrinsic strain in the tubular PNT structure plays an important role. It is proposed that the atomic structure of larger-diameter armchair PNTs (armPNTs) can remain stable at higher temperature, but the high intrinsic strain in the hoop direction renders zigzag PNTs (zigPNTs) less favorable. Conductance suppression due to two-stream instability in bilayer graphene

We investigate the electron-hole two-stream instability (or Coulomb drag) in intrinsic bilayer graphene in the hydrodynamic regime, accounting for the effects of temperature, initial drift velocity, magnetic field, and collisions.
