We report the filling of single walled carbon nanotubes with an electron spin-active fullerene species where a nitroxide radical is functionalized on the fullerene cage. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), optical absorption and electron spin resonance (ESR) are used to determine the rotational behavior of the encapsulated molecules and determine the polar nature of the nanotube interior.
An investigation concerning the tautness of suspended carbon nanotubes (CNTs), grown using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is presented. The suspended nanotubes were analyzed with both a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and a high resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM). The HR-SEM and TEM investigations revealed that the interactions between CNTs among themselves, and with the surface on which they are grown, is a primary cause for the tautness of suspended tubes. Specifically, the tube-tube and tube-surface dynamics cause adjoining tubes to create a zipper effect, …
We calculate the van der Waals energy of a C60 molecule when it is encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube with discrete atomistic structure. orientational degrees of freedom and longitudinal displacements of the molecule are taken into account, and several achiral and chiral carbon nanotubes are considered. A comparison with earlier work where the tube was approximated by a continuous cylindrical distribution of carbon atoms is made. We find that such an approximation is valid for high and intermediate tube radii; for low tube radii, minor chirality effects come into play. Three molec…
The synthesis of double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with highly unperturbed inner shells is reported using the catalytic vapor deposition method. Temperature dependent and high resolution Raman measurements show an enhanced phonon life-time of the inner tubes with respect to the outer ones and similar diameter SWCNTs. This proves that the inner tubes are unperturbed similar to the inner tubes in peapod-grown DWCNTs. The presence of the outer tube is argued to protect the inner tube from interaction with impurities and also to stabilize the growth of defect free inner tubes. The current mate…
The work functions (WF) of single-walled carbon nanotubes and bundles are studied using first principles methods. For individual metallic tubes, the WF is independent of the chirality and increase slightly with tube diameter. For semiconducting tubes, the WF (as defined by the HOMO energy) decreases rapidly. The WF of nanotube bundles ($\sim$ 5 eV) shows no clear dependence on the tube size and chirality, slightly higher than individual tubes. Calculations on finite tubes show no substantial difference in the tube end and the side wall. Upon alkali-metal intercalation, the WF decreases dramati…
The structural and electronic properties of aluminum covered single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) are studied from first-principles for a large number of coverage. Aluminum-aluminum interaction that is stronger than aluminum-tube interaction, prevents uniform metal coverage, and hence gives rise to the clustering. However, a stable aluminum ring and aluminum nanotube with well defined patterns can also form around the semiconducting SWNT and lead to metallization. The persistent current in the Al nanoring is discussed to show that a high magnetic field can be induced at the center of SWNT.
We show that the photoluminescence intensity of single-walled carbon nanotubes is much stronger in tubes with large chiral angles - armchair tubes - because exciton resonances make the luminescence of zigzag tubes intrinsically weak. This exciton-exciton resonance depends on the electronic structure of the tubes and is found more often in nanotubes of the +1 family. Armchair tubes do not necessarily grow preferentially with present growth techniques; they just have stronger luminescence. Our analysis allows to normalize photoluminescence intensities and find the abundance of nanotube chiraliti…
We formulate the problem of adsorption onto the surface of a carbon nanotube as a lattice gas on a triangular lattice wrapped around a cylinder. This model is equivalent to an XXZ Heisenberg quantum spin tube. The geometric frustration due to wrapping leads generically to four magnetization plateaus, in contrast to the two on a flat graphite sheet. We obtain analytical and numerical results for the magnetizations and transition fields for armchair, zig-zag and chiral nanotubes. The zig-zags are exceptional in that one of the plateaus has extensive zero temperature entropy in the classical limi…
The pressure response of double-wall carbon nanotubes has been investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy up to 10 GPa. The intensity of the radial breathing modes of the outer tubes decreases rapidly but remain observable up to 9 GPa, exhibiting a behavior similar (but less pronounced) to that of single-wall carbon nanotubes, which undergo a shape distortion at higher pressures. In addition, the tangential band of the external tubes broadens and decreases in amplitude. The corresponding Raman features of the internal tubes appear to be considerably less sensitive to pressure. All findings le…
We performed first principles calculations on work functions of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), which can be divided into two classes according to tube diameter (D). For class I tubes (D > 1 nm), work functions lie within a narrow distribution (~0.1 eV) and show no significant chirality or diameter dependence. For class II tubes (D < 1 nm), work functions show substantial changes, with armchair tubes decrease monotonously with diameter, while zigzag tubes show opposite trend. Surface dipoles and hybridization effects are shown to be responsible for the observed work function change.
We present a theoretical study of the optical absorption spectrum of small boron-nitride and carbon nanotubes using time-dependent density-functional theory and the random phase approximation. Both for C and BN tubes, the absorption of light polarized perpendicular to the tube-axis is strongly suppressed due to local field effects. Since BN-tubes are wide band-gap insulators, they only absorb in the ultra-violet energy regime, independently of chirality and diameter. In comparison with the spectra of the single C and BN-sheets, the tubes display additional fine-structure which stems from the (…
Exploring the synthesis of novel molecular nanostructures has been in the forefront of material research in the last decade. One of the most interesting nanostructures are single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Their catalyst free growth, however, remains an elusive goal. Here, we present the growth of single wall carbon nanotubes from organic solvents such as benzene and toluene in a confined environment, inside a host SWCNT. The solvents encapsulated in SWCNTs are transformed to an inner tube when subject to a heat treatment under dynamic vacuum at 1270 $^{\circ}$C. We used isotope labeling …
Over the past ten years, self-aligned TiO2 nanotubes have attracted tremendous scientific and technological interest due to their anticipated impact on energy conversion, environment remediation and biocompatibility. In the present manuscript, we review fundamental principles that govern the self-organized initiation of anodic TiO2 nanotubes. We start with the fundamental question: Why is self-organization taking place? We illustrate the inherent key mechanistic aspects that lead to tube growth in various different morphologies, such as rippled-walled tubes, smooth tubes, stacks and bamboo-typ…
We show by ab initio calculations that the electron-phonon coupling matrix element M of the radial breathing mode in single-walled carbon nanotubes depends strongly on tube chirality. For nanotubes of the same diameter the coupling strength |M|^2 is up to one order of magnitude stronger for zig-zag than for armchair tubes. For (n,m) tubes M depends on the value of (n-m) mod 3, which allows to discriminate semiconducting nano tubes with similar diameter by their Raman scattering intensity. We show measured resonance Raman profiles of the radial breathing mode which support our theoretical predi…
We compare the behavior of bond lengths, cross sectional shape and bulk modulus in equilibrium structure at ambient conditions and under hydrostatic pressure of all the three kinds of uncapped single walled carbon nanotubes. Results of our numerical calculations show that two bond lengths completely describe the structure of achiral SWNT whereas only one bond length is required to determine structure of chiral SWNT. In armchair tubes, one bond length is found to be larger than that of graphitic value while in zigzag tubes one bond length has a constant value. These bond lengths are very sensit…
Nano-diameter tubules made of folded graphitic sheets have drawn the attention of physicists ever since the advent of fullerene research. These are interesting because of their conductivity (depends upon chirality) as well as their mechanical properties. Bunches of such tubes, single-walled and each of same diameter (~14A), have been produced in the laboratory. In this work we explore the mechanical properties of the bunch (hexagonal packing), having assumed, for simplicity, uniform continuous distribution of carbon atoms on each tube. The atom-atom potential (6-exp) is of Kitaigorodsky type w…
Effect of Tube Radius on the Adsorption of Chlorothalonil on Single-Walled Carbon and Boron Nitride Nanotube Surfaces: A Theoretical Study for Environmental Remediation
The electronic structure of finite-length armchair carbon nanotubes has been studied using several ab-initio and semi-empirical quantum computational techniques. The additional confinement of the electrons along the tube axis leads to the opening of a band-gap in short armchair tubes. The value of the band-gap decreases with increasing tube length, however, the decrease is not monotonic but shows a well defined oscillation in short tubes. This oscillation can be explained in terms of periodic changes in the bonding characteristics of the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the tubes. Finite size graphen…
We apply first principles calculations to study the opening of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT's) by oxidation. We show that an oxygen rim can stabilize the edge of the open tube. The sublimation of CO$_2$ molecules from the rim with the subsequent closing of the tube changes from endothermic to exothermic as the tube radius increases, within the range of experimental feasible radii. We also obtain the energies for opening the tube at the cap and at the wall, the latter being significantly less favorable.
Raman spectroscopy on carbon nanotubes (CNT) yields a rich variety of information owing to the close interplay between electronic and vibrational properties. In this paper, we review the properties of double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). In particular, it is shown that SWCNT encapsulating C$_{60}$, so-called peapods, are transformed into DWCNTs when subject to a high temperature treatment. The inner tubes are grown in a catalyst free environment and do not suffer from impurities or defects that are usually encountered for as-grown SWCNTs or DWCNTs. As a consequence, the inner tubes are grown…
We fabricate photo-anodes by transferring anodic TiO2 nanotube membranes in tube-top-down configuration on FTO glass, and use them for constructing frontside illuminated dye-sensitized solar cells. Prior to solar cell construction, the tube-based photo-anodes are crystallized at different temperatures (400-800°C), and the effects of tube electron transport properties on the photovoltaic performance of the solar cells are investigated. We show that improved solar cell efficiencies (up to ca. 8.0%) can be reached by high-temperature treatment of the tube membranes. Consistently with electron tra…
We present {\it ab initio} calculations of the magnetic susceptibility and of the $^{13}$C chemical shift for carbon nanotubes, both isolated and in bundles. These calculations are performed using the recently proposed gauge-including projector augmented-wave approach for the calculation of magnetic response in periodic insulating systems. We have focused on the semiconducting zigzag nanotubes with diameters ranging from 0.6 to 1.6 nm. Both the susceptibility and the isotropic shift exhibit a dependence with the diameter (D) and the chirality of the tube (although this dependence is stronger f…
DFT calculation of various atomic species on graphene sheet is investigated as prototypes for formation of nano-structures on carbon nanotube (CNT) wall. We investigate computationally adsorption energies and adsorption sites on graphene sheet for a lot of atomic species including transition metals, noble metals, nitrogen and oxygen, using the DFT calculation as a prototype for CNT. The suitable atomic species can be chosen as each application from those results. The calculated results show us that Mo and Ru are bounded strongly on graphene sheet with large diffusion barrier energy. On the oth…
Structural and thermal characteristics of crystalline ropes of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are investigated. Novel crystalline ropes of polygonized SWCNTs produced by laser irradiation exhibit rounded-hexagonal cross sections in contrast to earlier observations of circular tubes. Extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations lead to several metastable structures of the lattice characterized by different tube cross sections, hexagonal, rounded-hexagonal and circular, and increasing cell volume. The competition between different tube shapes is analyzed and compared to experiments. On t…
We address the quality of electrical contact between carbon nanotubes and metallic electrodes by performing first-principles calculations for the electron transmission through ideal 2- and 3-terminal junctions, thus revealing the physical limit of tube-metal conduction. The structural model constructed involves surrounding the tube by the metal atoms of the electrode as in most experiments; we consider metallic (5,5) and n-doped semiconducting (10,0) tubes surrounded by Au or Pd. In the case of metallic tubes, the contact conductance is shown to approach the ideal 4e^2/h in the limit of large …
We investigate the structural parameters, i.e. bond lengths and bond angles of chiral tubes of various chiralities. The procedure used is based on helical and rotational symmetries and Tersoff potential. The results indicate that at ambient condition, there are equal bond lengths and three unequal bond angles in the structure of chiral tubes. The bond length depends much more on the chirality and very slightly on the tube radius. Length of the tubes does not play very significant role on bond length and bond angles. These C-C bonds were recalculated under hydrostatic pressure. The bond length …
The hollow inside of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) provides a unique degree of freedom to investigate chemical reactions inside this confined environment and to study the tube properties. It is reviewed herein, how encapsulating fullerenes, magnetic fullerenes, $^{13}$C isotope enriched fullerenes and organic solvents inside SWCNTs enables to yield unprecedented insight into their electronic, optical, and interfacial properties and to study their growth. Encapsulated C$_{60}$ fullerenes are transformed to inner tubes by a high temperature annealing. The unique, low defect concentration …
Photoluminescence is commonly used to identify the electronic structure of individual nanotubes. But, nanotubes naturally occur in bundles. Thus, we investigate photoluminescence of nanotube bundles. We show that their complex spectra are simply explained by exciton energy transfer between adjacent tubes, whereby excitation of large gap tubes induces emission from smaller gap ones via Forster interaction between excitons. The consequent relaxation rate is faster than non-radiative recombination, leading to enhanced photoluminescence of acceptor tubes. This fingerprints bundles with different c…
Filling of single-wall carbon nanotubes with C59N azafullerene derivatives is reported from toluene solvent at ambient temperature. The filling is characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The filling efficiency is the same as for C60 fullerenes and the tube-azafullerene interaction is similar to the tube-C60 interaction. Vacuum annealing of the encapsulated azafullerene results in the growth of inner tubes, however no spectroscopic signature of nitrogen built in the inner walls is detected.
The electronic properties of carbon nanotubes in a uniform transverse field are investigated within a single orbital tight-binding model. For doped nanotubes, the dielectric function is found to depend not only on symmetry of the tube, but also on radius and Fermi level position. Bandgap opening/closing is predicted for zigzag tubes, while it is found that armchair tubes always remain metallic, which is explained by the symmetry in their configuration. The bandstructures for both types are considerably modified when the field strength is large enough to mix neighboring subbands.
We analyze two scattering mechanisms that might cause intrinsic electronic resistivity in multi-wall carbon nanotubes: scattering by dopant impurities, and scattering by inter-tube electron-electron interaction. We find that for typically doped multi-wall tubes backward scattering at dopants is by far the dominating effect.
Combining a classical force field, a tight-binding model, and first-principles calculations, we have studied structural, electronic, and optical properties of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) bundles under hydrostatic pressure. We find that the outer tube acts as a protection shield for the inner tube and the inner tube increases the structure stability and the ability to resist the pressure of the outer tube. Moreover, the collapsed structures of the double-walled carbon nanotube bundle called ``parallel'' and ``in-between'' are more stable than the one called ``herringbone''. The structu…
Atomistic simulations using a combination of classical forcefield and Density-Functional-Theory (DFT) show that carbon atoms remain essentially sp2 coordinated in either bent tubes or tubes pushed by an atomically sharp AFM tip. Subsequent Green's-function-based transport calculations reveal that for armchair tubes there is no significant drop in conductance, while for zigzag tubes the conductance can drop by several orders of magnitude in AFM-pushed tubes. The effect can be attributed to simple stretching of the tube under tip deformation, which opens up an energy gap at the Fermi surface.
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the possibility of an orientational melting transition within a "rope" of (10,10) carbon nanotubes. When twisting nanotubes bundle up during the synthesis, orientational dislocations or twistons arise from the competition between the anisotropic inter-tube interactions, which tend to align neighboring tubes, and the torsion rigidity that tends to keep individual tubes straight. We map the energetics of a rope containing twistons onto a lattice gas model and find that the onset of a free "diffusion" of twistons, corresponding to orientational meltin…
We report on the transport properties of novel carbon nanostructures made of partially unzipped carbon nanotubes, which can be regarded as a seamless junction of a tube and a nanoribbon. We find that graphene nanoribbons act at certain energy ranges as a perfect valley filters for carbon nanotubes, with the maximum possible conductance. Our results show that a partially unzipped carbon nanotube is a magnetoresistive device, with a very large value of the magnetoresistance. We explore the properties of several structures combining nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons, demonstrating that they beha…
The stabilization of carbon nanotubes via the filling with inner tubes is demonstrated by probing the optical transitions in double-walled carbon nanotube bundles under hydrostatic pressure with optical spectroscopy. Double-walled carbon nanotube films were prepared from fullerene peapods and characterized by HRTEM and optical spectroscopy. In comparison to single-walled carbon nanotubes, the pressure-induced redshifts of the optical transitions in the outer tubes are significantly smaller below $\sim$10 GPa, demonstrating the enhanced mechanical stability due to the inner tube already at low …
We investigated the adsorption of a single atom, hydrogen and aluminum, on single wall carbon nanotubes from first-principles. The adsorption is exothermic, and the associated binding energy varies inversely as the radius of the zigzag tube. We found that the adsorption of a single atom and related properties can be modified continuously and reversibly by the external radial deformation. The binding energy on the high curvature site of the deformed tube increases with increasing radial deformation. The effects of curvature and radial deformation depend on the chirality of the tube.
Many-electron effects often dramatically modify the properties of reduced dimensional systems. We report calculations, based on an many-electron Green's function approach, of electron-hole interaction effects on the optical spectra of small-diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes. Excitonic effects qualitatively alter the optical spectra of both semiconducting and metallic tubes. Excitons are bound by ~ 1 eV in the semiconducting (8,0) tube and by ~ 100 meV in the metallic (3,3) tube. These large many-electron effects explain the discrepancies between previous theories and experiments.
We investigate structural parameters, i.e., bond lengths and bond angles of isolated uncapped zigzag single-wall nanotubes in detail. The bond lengths and bond angles are determined for several radii tubes by using a theoretical procedure based on the helical and rotational symmetry for atom coordinates generation, coupled with Tersoff potential for interaction energy calculations. Results show that the structure of zigzag tubes is governed by two bond lengths. One bond length is found to have a value equal to that of graphite, while the other one is larger. Furthermore, the tube length is fou…
We optimize the deposition of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite into mesoporous electrodes consisting of anodic TiO2 nanotube layers. By a simple spin coating approach, complete filling of the tube scaffolds is obtained, that leads to interdigitated perovskite structures in conformal contact with the TiO2 tube counterparts. Such assemblies can be used as solid state solar cells in hole-transporting material-free configuration, i.e., the tube scaffold serves as electron collector and blocking layer, while the perovskite acts as visible light absorber and hole transporting material. We show that the complet…
Structural identification of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNT) is presented through a robust procedure based on the latest generation of transmission electron microscope, making possible a statistical analysis based on numerous nano-objects. This approach reveals that inner and outer tubes of DWNTs are not randomly oriented, suggesting the existence of a mechanical coupling between the two concentric walls. With the support of atomic scale modelisations, we attribute it to the presence of incommensurate domains whose structures depend on the diameters and helicities of both tubes, and wher…
We study the binding energy, intertube distance and electronic structure of bundles consisting of single walled carbon nanotubes of the same chirality. We model various nanotube structures (chiralities) and orientations with van der Waals density functional theory. The orientation of the tubes in the bundle strongly influences the properties of the bundles if the chirality of the tubes shares symmetry with the trigonal bundle structure, meaning chiralities which have a $60^\circ$-rotational symmetry (C$_6$-axis), e.g. ($12,0$) bundles. The bundle structure breaks the symmetry depending on the …
We show that the optical absorption spectra of boron nitride (BN) nanotubes are dominated by strongly bound excitons. Our first-principles calculations indicate that the binding energy for the first and dominant excitonic peak depends sensitively on the dimensionality of the system, varying from 0.7 eV in bulk hexagonal BN via 2.1 eV in the single sheet of BN to more than 3 eV in the hypothetical (2,2) tube. The strongly localized nature of this exciton dictates the fast convergence of its binding energy with increasing tube diameter towards the sheet value. The absolute position of the first …
High pressure Raman experiments were performed on bundled double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). We observe peculiar regularity in the strength of the inner-outer tube (intratube) interaction, which is attributed to the interplay between the tube size and the intratube spacing. Moreover, a pressure-induced red shift of the band gap energies of the probed inner tubes is deduced from the Raman spectra. These experimental findings reveal that the interaction between primary and secondary shells, although generally assumed to be weak, determines the dynamics in the interior of the DWCNTs.
Controlled syntheses in nanoscale structures should be expected and phosphorous nanotubes with predefined chiralities are important in electronic devices with tunable bandgap. Here, incorporating molecular dynamics simulations with theoretical analyses, we show that a zigzag phosphorene nanoribbon can self-assemble and form a corresponding chiral phosphorous nanotube surrounding a template armchair phosphorous nanotube. The van der Waals potential between the nanoribbon and the nanotube is transformed to the intrinsic deformed and chemical bonding energies of the synthesized tube together with…
In the present work we demonstrate the self-organized formation of anodic Mo-oxide nanotube arrays grown on a Mo sheet under suitable electrochemical conditions in glycerol/NH4F electrolytes. The resulting amorphous tubes can be crystallized by annealing to MoO2 or MoO3. The tube walls then can be further sulfurized fully or partially to Mo-sulfide to form well-ordered arrays of vertically aligned MoOx/MoS2 nanotubes. Under optimized conditions, defined MoS2 sheets form on the oxide walls in a layer by layer low angle zig-zag arrangement that provide a high density of reactive stacking faults.…
New plans should be used to improve quality and to increase productivity and durability of conventional pavements. In this investigation, it has been attempted to promote technical characteristics of bitumen using carbon nanotubes as an additive. Wet and dry process methods are most practical ways of mixing CNF in AC. It was decided that the best method to adopt for this investigation was the dry process. In this study thermal and ductility properties of modified bitumen by 0.1, 0.5, and 1% carbon nano-tube content in bitumen were evaluated considering bitumen penetration, softening point, and…
We present a comprehensive study of the chiral-index assignment of carbon nanotubes in aqueous suspensions by resonant Raman scattering of the radial breathing mode. We determine the energies of the first optical transition in metallic tubes and of the second optical transition in semiconducting tubes for more than 50 chiral indices. The assignment is unique and does not depend on empirical parameters. The systematics of the so-called branches in the Kataura plot are discussed; many properties of the tubes are similar for members of the same branch. We show how the radial breathing modes obser…
The optical absorption spectrum of the carbon (4,2) nanotube is computed using an ab-initio many-body approach which takes into account excitonic effects. We develop a new method involving a local basis set which is symmetric with respect to the screw symmetry of the tube. Such a method has the advantages of scaling faster than plane-wave methods and allowing for a precise determination of the symmetry character of the single particle states, two-particle excitations, and selection rules. The binding energy of the lowest, optically active states is approximately 0.8 eV. The corresponding excit…
For the first time, an approach is suggested for the quantitative description of the electronic structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes and the prediction of active sites for the tube controlled functionalization in view of the tube length and ends structure. The approach is based on the tube characteristic feature connected with odd electrons and is illustrated for a family involving fragments of arm-chair configured (4,4) single-walled nanotubes differing by length and end structure. Short and long tubes as well as tubes with cap end and open end, in the latter case, both hydrogen termin…
The present paper investigates the cross-sectional morphology of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNTs) restrained radially and circumferentially by an infinite surrounding elastic medium, subjected to uniform external hydrostatic pressure. In this study, a two-dimensional plane strain model is developed, assuming no variation of load and deformation along the tube axis. We find some characteristic cross-sectional shapes from the elastic buckling analysis. The effect of the surrounded elastic medium on the cross-sectional shape which occurs due to pressure buckling is focused on by the compariso…
The temperature dependence of optical excitation life-time, Gamma, and transition energies, E_ii, were measured for bucky-papers of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and inner tubes in double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) using resonant Raman scattering. The temperature dependence of Gamma and E_ii is the same for both types of samples and is independent of tube chirality. The data proves that electron-phonon interaction is responsible for temperature dependence of E_ii(T). The temperature independent inhomogeneous contribution to Gamma is much larger in the SWCNT samples, which is explai…
We have assigned the chirality of the internal tubes of double walled carbon nanotubes grown by catalytic chemical vapor deposition using the high sensitivity of the radial breathing mode (RB) in inelastic light scattering experiments. The deduced chirality corresponds to several semiconducting and only two metallic internal tubes. The RB modes are systematically shifted to higher energies when compared to theoretical values. The difference between experimental and theoretical energies of the RB modes of metallic tubes and semiconducting tubes are discussed interms of the reduced interlayer di…
Using first-principles total-energy pseudopotential calculations, we have studied the properties of chains of potassium and aluminum in nanotubes. For BN tubes, there is little interaction between the metal chains and the tubes, and the conductivity of these tubes is through carriers located at the inner part of the tube. In contrast, for small radius carbon nanotubes, there are two types of interactions: charge-transfer (dominant for alkali atoms) leading to strong ionic cohesion, and hybridization (for multivalent metal atoms) resulting in a smaller cohesion. For Al-atomic chains in carbon t…
In this paper, we proposed a lattice dynamic treatment for the total potential energy for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT's) which is, apart from a parameter for the non-linear effects, extracted from the vibrational energy of the planar graphene sheet. Based upon the proposal, we investigated systematically the relaxed lattice configuration for narrow SWCNT's, the strain energy, the Young's modulus and Poisson ratio, and the lattice vibrational properties respected to the relaxed equilibrium tubule structure. Our calculated results for various physical quantities are nicely in consisten…
We investigate by means of DFT/GGA+U calculations the electronic and structural properties of magnetic nanotubes composed of an iron oxide monolayer and (n,0) Boron Nitride (BN) nanotubes, with n ranging from 6 up to 14. The formation energy per FeO molecule of FeO covered tubes is smaller than the formation energy of small FeO nanoparticles which suggest that the FeO molecules may cover the BN nanotubes rather than to aggregate to form the FeO bulk. We propose a continuous model for the FeO covered BN nanotubes formation energy which predicts that BN tubes with diameter of roughly 13 Åare the…
We simulate the twist of carbon nanotubes using atomic molecular dynamic simulations. The ultimate twist angle per unit length and the deformation energy are calculated for nanotubes of different geometries. It is found that the big tube is harder to be twisted while the small tube exhibits higher ultimate twisting ratio. For multi-walled nanotubes, the zigzag tube is found to be able to stand more deformation than the armchair one. We observed the surface transformation during twisting. Formation of structural defects is observed prior to fracture.
We consider magnetic properties of a long, thin-walled ferromagnetic nanotube. We assume that the tube consists of isotropic homogeneous magnet whose spins interact via the exchange energy, the dipole-dipole interaction energy, and also interact with an external field via Zeeman energy. Possible stable states are the parallel state with the magnetization along the axis of the tube, and the vortex state with the magnetization along azimuthal direction. For a given material, which of them has lower energy depends on the value γ=R^2d/(L λ_x^2), where R is the radius of the tube, d is its thicknes…
We present a theoretical study of the role of the local environment in the electronic properties of carbon nanotubes: isolated single- and multi-wall nanotubes, nanotube-ropes, tubes supported on gold and cutted to finite length. Interaction with the substrate or with other tubes does not alter the scanning-tunneling-microscopy (STM) patterns observed for isolated tubes. STM-topographic images of topological defects (pentagon/heptagon pair) and tube-caps have also been studied. In both cases the obtained image depends on the sign of the applied voltage and it can be described in terms of the p…
We propose a new drive mechanism for carbon nanotube (CNT) motors, based upon the torque generated by a flux of electrons passing through a chiral nanotube. The structure of interest comprises a double-walled CNT, formed from, for example, an achiral outer tube encompassing a chiral inner tube. Through a detailed analysis of electrons passing through such a "windmill", we find that the current due to a potential difference applied to the outer CNT generates sufficient torque to overcome the static and dynamic frictional forces that exists between the inner and outer walls, thereby causing the …
