We report the observation of an even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at $ν=1/4$ in a high quality, wide GaAs quantum well. The sample has a quantum well width of 50 nm and an electron density of $n_e=2.55\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. We have performed transport measurements at $T\sim35$ mK in magnetic fields up to 45 T. When the sample is perpendicular to the applied magnetic field, the diagonal resistance displays a kink at $ν=1/4$. Upon tilting the sample to an angle of $θ=20.3^o$ a clear FQH state at emerges at $ν=1/4$ with a plateau in the Hall resistance and a strong minimum in the diagonal resistance.
An experimental study of the high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs system at large-$ν$ indicates several distinct phase relations between the oscillatory diagonal- and Hall- resistances, and suggests a new class of integral quantum Hall effect, which is characterized by "anti-phase" Hall- and diagonal- resistance oscillations.
We study intrinsic spin Hall effect in p-type GaAs quantum well structure described by Luttinger Hamiltonian and a Rashba spin-orbit coupling arising from the structural inversion symmetry breaking. The Rashba term induces an energy level crossing in the lowest heavy hole subband, which gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance. The resonance may be used to identify the intrinsic spin Hall effect in experiments.
We examine the radiation induced modification of the Hall effect in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices that exhibit vanishing resistance under microwave excitation. The modification in the Hall effect upon irradiation is characterized by (a) a small reduction in the slope of the Hall resistance curve with respect to the dark value, (b) a periodic reduction in the magnitude of the Hall resistance, $R_{xy}$, that correlates with an increase in the diagonal resistance, $R_{xx}$, and (c) a Hall resistance correction that disappears as the diagonal resistance vanishes.
We develop a theory of extrinsic spin currents in semiconductors, resulting from spin-orbit coupling at charged scatterers, which leads to skew scattering and side jump contributions to the spin Hall conductance. Applying the theory to bulk n-GaAs, without any free parameters, we find spin currents that are in reasonable agreement with recent experiments by Kato et al. [Science 306, 1910 (2004)].
The temperature driven flow lines of the Hall and dissipative magnetoconductance data (σ_{xy},σ_{xx}) are studied in the fractional quantum Hall regime for a 2D electron system in GaAs/Al_{x}Ga_{1-x}As heterostructures. The flow lines are rather well described by a recent unified scaling theory developed for both the integer and the fractional quantum Hall effect in a totally spin-polarized 2D electron system which predicts that one (σ_{xy},σ_{xx}) point determines a complete flow line.
Transport properties of GaAs/δ<Mn>/GaAs/In\timesGa1-\timesAs/GaAs structures containing InxGa1-xAs (\times {\approx} 0.2) quantum well (QW) and Mn delta layer (DL) with relatively high, about one Mn monolayer (ML) content, are studied. In these structures DL is separated from QW by GaAs spacer with the thickness ds = 2-5 nm. All structures possess a dielectric character of conductivity and demonstrate a maximum in the resistance temperature dependence Rxx(T) at the temperature {\approx} 46K which is usually associated with the Curie temperature Tc of ferromagnetic (FM) transition in DL. Howeve…
With minima in the diagonal conductance G_{xx} and in the absolute value of the derivative |dG_{xy}/dB| at the Hall conductance value G_{xy}=e^{2}/h, spin-splitting is observed in the quantum Hall effect of heavily Si-doped GaAs layers with low electron mobility 2000 cm^2/Vs in spite of the fact that the spin-splitting is much smaller than the level broadening. Experimental results can be explained in the frame of the scaling theory of the quantum Hall effect, applied independently to each of the two spin subbands.
We report an experimental study of the quantum corrections to the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall coefficient of a low mobility, high density two-dimensional two-dimensional electron gas in a AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in a wide temperature range (1.5 K - 110 K). This temperature range covers both the diffusive and the ballistic interaction regimes for our samples. It was therefore possible to study the crossover region for the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall effect.
We present a systematic characterization of fluctuations in submicron Hall devices based on GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gas heterostructures at temperatures between 1.5 K to 60 K. A large variety of noise spectra, from 1/f to Lorentzian, are obtained by gating the Hall devices. The noise level can be reduced by up to several orders of magnitude with a moderate gate voltage of 0.2 V, whereas the carrier density increases less than 60% in the same range. The significant dependence of the Hall noise spectra on temperature and gate voltage is explained in terms of the switching processes …
We measure the Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas formed at a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in the terahertz regime close to the cyclotron resonance frequency by employing a highly sensitive Faraday rotation method coupled with electrical gating of the sample to change the electron density. We observe clear plateau-and step-like features in the Faraday rotation angle vs. electron density and magnetic field (Landau-level filling factor), which are the high frequency manifestation of quantum Hall plateaus - a signature of topologically protected edge states. The results are compare…
Hall effect of two-dimensional holes that are spin-polarized by a strong parallel magnetic field was explored with a small tilt angle. The Hall resistivity increases nonlinearly with the magnetic field and exhibits negative corrections. The anomalous negative corrections increase with the perpendicular magnetization of the two-dimensional hole system. We attribute this to the anomalous Hall effect of spin-polarized carriers in a nonmagnetic system. The anomalous corrections to the conductivity exhibit non-monotonic dependence on the magnetic field.
Transport experiments in high mobility (110) GaAs heterostructures have been performed at very low temperatures 8 mK. At higher Landau-Levels we observe a transport anisotropy that bears some similarity with what is already seen at half-odd-integer filling on (001) oriented substrates. In addition we report the first observation of transport anisotropies within the lowest Landau-Level. This remarkable new anisotropy is independent of the current direction and depends on the polarity of the magnetic field.
We construct an effective Hamiltonian for electrons in the fractional quantum Hall regime for GaAs and graphene that takes into account Landau level mixing (for both GaAs and graphene) and subband mixing (for GaAs, due to the nonzero width of the quantum well). This mixing has the important qualitative effect of breaking particle-hole symmetry as well as renormalizing the strength of the interparticle interactions. Both effects could have important consequences for the prospect that the fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=5/2$ is described by states that support non-Abelian excitations such a…
We report on quantum Hall stripes (QHSs) formed in higher Landau levels of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells with high carrier density ($n_e > 4 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$) which is expected to favor QHS orientation along unconventional $\left < 1\bar{1}0 \right >$ crystal axis and along the in-plane magnetic field $B_{||}$. Surprisingly, we find that at $B_{||} = 0$ QHSs in our samples are aligned along $\left < 110 \right >$ direction and can be reoriented only perpendicular to $B_{||}$. These findings suggest that high density alone is not a decisive factor for either abnormal native QHS orientation…
It is shown that the observed Quantum Hall Effect in epitaxial layers of heavily doped n-type GaAs with thickness (50-140 nm) larger the mean free path of the conduction electrons (15-30 nm) and, therefore, with a three-dimensional single-particle spectrum is induced by the electron-electron interaction. The Hall resistance R_xy of the thinnest sample reveals a wide plateau at small activation energy E_a=0.4 K found in the temperature dependence of the transverse resistance R_xx. The different minima in the transverse conductance G_xx of the different samples show a universal temperature depen…
We investigate the magnetoresistance of epitaxially grown, heavily doped n-type GaAs layers with thickness (40-50 nm) larger than the electronic mean free path (23 nm). The temperature dependence of the dissipative resistance R_{xx} in the quantum Hall effect regime can be well described by a hopping law (R_{xx} \propto exp{-(T_0/T)^p}) with p=0.6. We discuss this result in terms of variable range hopping in a Coulomb gap together with a dependence of the electron localization length on the energy in the gap. The value of the exponent p>0.5 shows that electron-electron interactions have to be …
Oscillatory variations of the diagonal ($G_{xx}$) and Hall ($G_{xy}$) magnetoconductances are discussed in view of topological scaling effects giving rise to the quantum Hall effect. They occur in a field range without oscillations of the density of states due to Landau quantization, and are, therefore, totally different from the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Such oscillations are experimentally observed in disordered GaAs layers in the extreme quantum limit of applied magnetic field with a good description by the unified scaling theory of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect.
We report an experimental study of quantum conductivity corrections in a low mobility, high density two-dimensional electron gas in a AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in a wide temperature range (1.5K - 110K). This temperature range covers both the diffusive and the ballistic interaction regimes for our samples. It has been therefore possible to study the crossover between these regimes for both the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall effect. We perform a parameter free comparison of our experimental data for the longitudinal conductivity at zero magnetic field, the Hall coefficient, and the…
We report on Hall field-induced resistance oscillations (HIRO) in a 60 nm-wide GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well with an \emph{in situ} grown back gate, which allows tuning the carrier density $n$. At low $n$, when all electrons are confined to the lowest subband (SB1), the HIRO frequency, proportional to the product of the cyclotron diameter and the Hall field, scales with $n^{-1/2}$, as expected. Remarkably, population of the second subband (SB2) significantly enhances HIRO, while their frequency now scales as $n^{-1}$. We demonstrate that in this two-subband regime HIRO still originate solely from b…
The direct-current (dc) $σ_{xx}^{dc}$ and alternating-current (ac) $σ_{xx}^{ac}=σ_1-iσ_2$ conductivities of a wide (46 nm) GaAs quantum well with the bilayer electron density distribution are measured. It is found that the magnetic field dependence of $σ_{xx}$ exhibits three sets of oscillations related to the transitions between Landau levels in symmetric and antisymmetric subbands and with the transitions occurring owing to the Zeeman splitting of these subbands. The analysis of the frequency dependence of the ac conductivity and the $σ_1 / σ_2$ ratio demonstrates that the conductivity at th…
The integer quantum Hall effect is a well-studied phenomenon at frequencies below about 100 Hz. The plateaus in high-frequency Hall conductivity were experimentally proven to retain up to 33 GHz, but the behavior at higher frequencies has remained largely unexplored. Using continuous wave THz spectroscopy, the complex Hall conductivity of GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions was studied in the range of 69-1100 GHz. Above 100 GHz, the quantum plateaus are strongly smeared out and replaced by weak quantum oscillations in the real part of the conductivity. The amplitude of the oscillations decreases with …
The applied radiation excites "holes". The condensed composite (c)-bosons formed in the excited channel create a superconducting state with an energy gap. The supercondensate suppresses the non-condensed c-bosons at low temperatures, but it cannot suppress the c-fermions in the base channel, and the small normal current accompanied by the Hall field yields a B-linear Hall resistivity.
We report on measurements of direct spin Hall effect in a lightly n-doped GaAs channel. As spin detecting contacts we employed highly efficient ferromagnetic Fe/(Ga,Mn)As/GaAs Esaki diode structures. We investigate bias and temperature dependence of the measured spin Hall signal and evaluate the value of total spin Hall conductivity and its dependence on channel conductivity and temperature. From the results we determine skew scattering and side jump contribution to the total spin hall conductivity and compare it with the results of experiments on higher conductive n-GaAs channels[Phys. Rev. L…
We study the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in an AlGaAs/GaAs quantum Hall device with a side gate. The strength of the hyperfine interaction between electron and nuclear spins is modulated by tuning a position of the two-dimensional electron systems with respect to the polarized nuclear spins using the side-gate voltages. The NMR frequency is systematically controlled by the gate-tuned technique in a semiconductor device.
In case of a of the heterostructure n-GaAs/AlGaAs with sheet density $n=2 \times 10^{11}$cm$^{-2}$ and mobility $μ\approx 2 \times 10^6$ cm$^2$/V$\cdot$s with integer and fractional quantum Hall effect (IQHE and FQHE, respectively) we demonstrate the wide applicability of acoustic methods for determining the general conduction parameters of a two dimensional electron gas. We also examine the mechanisms of low-temperature conductivity in the minima of oscillations of high frequency conductivity in the IQHE and FQHE regimes. In the magnetic field region where electrons are delocalized, the param…
We report the experimental results from a dark study and a photo-excited study of the high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs system at large filling factors, $ν$. At large-$ν$, the dark study indicates several distinct phase relations ("Type-1", "Type-2", and "Type-3") between the oscillatory diagonal- and Hall- resistances, as the canonical Integral Quantum Hall Effect (IQHE) is manifested in the "Type-1" case of approximately orthogonal diagonal- and Hall resistance- oscillations. Surprisingly, the investigation indicates quantum Hall plateaus also in the "Type-3" case characterized by approximately "ant…
The quantum Hall effect (QHE) theoretically provides a universal standard of electrical resistance in terms of the Planck constant $h$ and the electron charge $e$. In graphene, the spacing between the lowest discrete energy levels occupied by the charge carriers under magnetic field is exceptionally large. This is promising for a quantum Hall resistance standard more practical in graphene than in the GaAs/AlGaAs devices currently used in national metrology institutes. Here, we demonstrate that large QHE devices, made of high quality graphene grown by propane/hydrogen chemical vapour deposition…
The resistivity (R) of low mobility dilute 2D-electron gas in a n-InGaAs/GaAs double quantum well (DQW) exhibits the monotonic 'insulating-like' temperature dependence (dR/dT < 0) at T = 1.8 -- 70K in zero magnetic field. This temperature interval corresponds to a ballistic regime (kTtau/hbar > 0.1 -- 3.5) for our samples, and the electron density is on a 'insulating' side of the so-called B = 0 2D metal--insulator transition. We show that the observed localization and Landau quantization is due to the Sigma_xy(T)anomalous T-dependence.
We present a systematic study of the corrections to both the longitudinal conductivity and Hall resistivity due to electron-electron interactions in high quality GaAs systems using the recent theory of Zala et al. [Phys. Rev. B 64, 214204 (2001)]. We demonstrate that the interaction corrections to the longitudinal conductivity and Hall resistivity predicted by the theory are consistent with each other. This suggests that the anomalous metallic drop in resistivity at B=0 is due to interaction effects and supports the theory of Zala et al.
The absorption coefficient for surface acoustic wave $Γ$ and variation in the wave velocity $ΔV/V$ were measured in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures; the above quantities are related to interaction of the wave with two-dimensional electron gas and depend nonlinearly on the power of the wave. Measurements were performed under conditions of the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE), in which case the two-dimensional electron gas was localized in a random fluctuation potential of impurities. The dependences of the components $σ_1(E)$ and $σ_2(E)$ of high-frequency conductivity $σ=σ_1 - iσ_2$ on the elec…
We observe fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at the even-denominator Landau level filling factor $ν=1/2$ in two-dimensional hole systems confined to GaAs quantum wells of width 30 to 50 nm and having bilayer-like charge distributions. The $ν=1/2$ FQHE is stable when the charge distribution is symmetric and only in a range of intermediate densities, qualitatively similar to what is seen in two-dimensional electron systems confined to approximately twice wider GaAs quantum wells. Despite the complexity of the hole Landau level structure, originating from the coexistence and mixing of the hea…
We report on the detection of the intrinsic spin Hall effect in a modulation doped Al-GaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure bounded by a self-aligned pn-junction, fabricated by the cleaved edge overgrowth method. Light emission due to the recombination of electrons and spin-polarized holes was generated and mapped with a spatial resolution of one micrometer. An edge accumulated spin polarization of up to 11% was measured, induced solely by application of an electric Field perpendicular to the pn-junction. Using a quantum dot structure as light source, a linear dependence of the effective spin polar…
In two-dimensional hole systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells, where the heavy- and light- hole states are close in energy, we observe a very unusual crossing of the lowest two Landau levels as the sample is tilted in magnetic field. At a magic tilt angle $θ\simeq 34^{\circ}$, which surprisingly is independent of the well-width or hole density, in a large filling factor range near $ν=1$ the lowest two levels are nearly degenerate as evinced by the presence of two-component quantum Hall states. Remarkably, a quantum Hall state is seen at $ν=1$, consistent with a \textit{correlated} $Ψ_{11…
Magneto-transport measurements are performed on the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. By increasing the magnetic field perpendicular to the 2DES, magnetoresistivity oscillations due to Landau quantisation can be identified just near the direct insulator-quantum Hall (I-QH) transition. However, different mobilities are obtained from the oscillations and transition point. Our study shows that the direct I-QH transition does not always correspond to the onset of strong localisation.
The temperature driven flow lines of the diagonal and Hall magnetoconductance data (G_{xx},G_{xy}) are studied in heavily Si-doped, disordered GaAs layers with different thicknesses. The flow lines are quantitatively well described by a recent universal scaling theory developed for the case of duality symmetry. The separatrix G_{xy}=1 (in units e^2/h) separates an insulating state from a spin-degenerate quantum Hall effect (QHE) state. The merging into the insulator or the QHE state at low temperatures happens along a semicircle separatrix G_{xx}^2+(G_{xy}-1)^2=1 which is divided by an unstabl…
This paper reports on the observation and analysis of magnetotransport phenomena in the nonlinear differential resistance $r_{xx}=dV_{xx}/dI$ of high-mobility InGaAs/InP and GaAs/AlGaAs Hall bar samples driven by direct current, $\Idc$. Specifically, it is observed that Shubnikov -de Haas (SdH) oscillations at large filling factors invert their phase at sufficiently large values of $\Idc$. This phase inversion is explained as being due to an electron heating effect. In the quantum Hall effect regime the $r_{xx}$ oscillations transform into diamond-shaped patterns with different slopes correspo…
The realization of a viable semiconductor transistor and information processing devices based on the electron spin has fueled intense basic research of three key elements: injection, detection, and manipulation of spins in the semiconductor channel. The inverse spin Hall effect (iSHE) detection of spins injected optically in a 2D GaAs and manipulated by a gate-voltage dependent internal spin-orbit field has recently led to the experimental demonstration of a spin transistor logic device. The aim of the work presented here is to demonstrate in one device the iSHE detection combined with an elec…
We report an experimental investigation of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at the even-denominator Landau level filling factor $ν$ = 1/2 in very high quality wide GaAs quantum wells, and at very high magnetic fields up to 45 T. The quasi-two-dimensional electron systems we study are confined to GaAs quantum wells with widths $W$ ranging from 41 to 96 nm and have variable densities in the range of $\simeq 4 \times 10^{11}$ to $\simeq 4 \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$. We present several experimental phase diagrams for the stability of the $ν=1/2$ FQHE in these quantum wells. In general, for a g…
We study the optically pumped nuclear spin polarization in a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in the quantum Hall system. We apply resistive detection via the contact hyperfine interaction, which provides high sensitivity and selectivity, to probe a small amount of polarized nuclear spins in a single well. The properties of the optical nuclear spin polarization are clearly observed. We theoretically discuss the nuclear spin dynamics accompanied with doped electrons to analyze the experimental data. The optical nuclear polarization spectra exhibit electron-spin-resolved lowest Landau level inter…
Coulomb driven, magneto-optically induced electron and hole bound states from a series of heavily doped GaAs/Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As single heterojunctions (SHJ) are revealed in high magnetic fields. At low magnetic fields (nu > 2), the photoluminescence spectra display Shubnikov de-Haas type oscillations associated with the empty second subband transition. In the regime of the Landau filling factor nu < 1 and 1 < nu <2, we found strong bound states due to Mott type localizations. Since a SHJ has an open valence band structure, these bound states are a unique property of the dynamic movement of the v…
We consider quantum lifetime derived from low-field Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations as a metric of quality of the two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs quantum wells that expresses large excitation gaps in the fractional quantum Hall states of the N=1 Landau level. Analysis indicates two salient features: 1) small density inhomogeneities dramatically impact the amplitude of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations such that the canonical method (cf. Coleridge, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{44}, 3793) for determination of quantum lifetime substantially underestimates $τ_q$ unless density inhomogeneity is explicitly…
Transport measurements indicate strong oscillations in the Hall-,$R_{xy}$, and the diagonal-, $R_{xx}$, resistances and exhibit Hall plateaus at the lowest temperatures, in three-dimensional Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG). At the same time, a comparative Shubnikov-de Haas-oscillations-based Berry's phase analysis indicates that graphite is unlike the GaAs/AlGaAs 2D electron system, the 3D n-GaAs epilayer, semiconducting $Hg_{0.8}Cd_{0.2}Te$, and some other systems. Finally, we observe the transport data to follow $B\times dR_{xy}/dB \approx - ΔR_{xx}$. This feature is consistent wit…
Quasiparticles with fractional charge and fractional statistics are key features of the fractional quantum Hall effect. We discuss in detail the definitions of fractional charge and statistics and the ways in which these properties may be observed. In addition to theoretical foundations, we review the present status of the experiments in the area. We also discuss the notions of non-Abelian statistics and attempts to find experimental evidence for the existence of non-Abelian quasiparticles in certain quantum Hall systems.
We give a brief introduction to the phenomenon of the Fractional Quantum Hall effect, whose discovery was awarded the Nobel prize in 1998. We also explain the composite fermion picture which describes the fractional quantum Hall effect as the integer quantum Hall effect of composite fermions.
In this Letter we present a microscopic theory of the extrinsic spin Hall effect based on the diagrammatic perturbation theory. Side-jump (SJ) and skew-scattering (SS) contributions are explicitly taken into account to calculate the spin Hall conductivity, and we show their effects scale as $σ_{xy}^{SJ}/σ_{xy}^{SS} \sim (\hbar/τ)/ε_F$, with $τ$ being the transport relaxation time. Motivated by recent experimental work we apply our theory to n- and p-doped 3D and 2D GaAs structures, obtaining $σ_s/σ_c \sim 10^{-3}-10^{-4}$ where $σ_{s(c)}$ is the spin Hall (charge) conductivity, which is in rea…
A fractional quantization in a two dimensional space is proposed. The angular momenta of the two dimensional electrons are quantized in fractional numbers by the boundary conditions on a multi-layered Riemann surface. Extended wave functions for the incompressible quantum fluid states are presented and the cohesive and the excitation energies are given.
Two kinds of topological excitations, vortices and skyrmions, are studied in the frame of Ginzburg-Landau theory. We obtain the rigorous relation between the topological excitation and the order parameters in the fractional quantum Hall systems. We also discuss the evolution of the vortices in fractional quantum Hall systems.
We report the first evidence of electron-mediated ferromagnetism in a molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) grown $GaAs/Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$ heterostructure with Mn $δ$-doping. The interaction between the magnetic dopants (Mn) and the Two-Dimensional Electron Gas (2DEG) realizes magnetic ordering when the temperature is below the Curie temperature ($T_{C} \sim 1.7K$) and the 2DEG is brought in close proximity to the Mn layer by gating. The Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) contribution to the total Hall resistance is shown to be about three to four orders of magnitude smaller than in the case of hole-mediated…
We study interacting GaAs bilayer hole systems, with very small interlayer tunneling, in a counterflow geometry where equal currents are passed in opposite directions in the two, independently contacted layers. At low temperatures, both the longitudinal and Hall counterflow resistances tend to vanish in the quantum Hall state at total bilayer filling $ν=1$, demonstrating the pairing of oppositely charged carriers in opposite layers. The temperature dependence of the counterflow Hall resistance is anomalous compared to the other transport coefficients: even at relatively high temperatures ($\si…
We obtain a ``mean field'' scaling flow of the longitudinal and the Hall conductivities in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Using the composite fermion picture and assuming that the composite fermions follow the Khmelnitskii-Pruisken scaling flow for the integer quantum Hall effect, the unstable fixed points which govern the transitions between different fractional quantum Hall states are identified. Distributions of the critical longitudinal and Hall conductivities at the unstable fixed points are obtained and implications of the results for the experiments on mesoscopic quantum Hall syste…
The true nature of the lowest-energy, long-wavelength neutral excitation of the fractional quantum Hall effect has been a long outstanding problem. In this Letter, we establish that it is a two-roton bound state.
We constructed a Hall resistance formula for the fractional quantum Hall effect by analyzing the experimental data reported in [J. P. Eisenstein and H. L. Stormer, {Science} {\bf 248}, 1510 (1990)]. The formula is given as a function of magnetic induction, chemical potential and temperature. The Hall resistance function contains a single-electron energy spectrum, which has phenomenological perturbation terms with three tunable parameters. The formula yields 12 plateaus that are consistent with the experiment. The perturbations can be interpreted as precession or nutation of a Landau orbital in…
The quantum magnetotransport properties of a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide are derived using linear response theory. Especially, the effect of topological terms on longitudinal and Hall conductivity is analyzed. The Hall conductivity exhibits fractional steps in the integer quantum Hall regime. Further complete spin and valley polarization of the longitudinal conductivity is seen in presence of these topological terms. Finally, the Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations are suppressed or enhanced contingent on the sign of these topological terms.
Quasielectrons and quasiholes in the fractional quantum Hall liquids obey fractional (including nontrivial mutual) exclusion statistics. Their statistics matrix can be determined from several possible state-counting scheme, involving different assumptions on statistical correlations. Thermal activation of quasiparticle pairs and thermodynamic properties of the fractional quantum Hall liquids near fillings $1/m$ ($m$ odd) at low temperature are studied in the approximation of generalized ideal gas. The existence of hierarchical states in the fractional quantum Hall effect is shown to be a manif…
We argue that dynamics of gapless Fractional Quantum Hall Edge states is essentially non-linear and that it features fractionally quantized solitons propagating along the edge. Observation of solitons would be a direct evidence of fractional charges. We show that the non-linear dynamics of the Laughlin's FQH state is governed by the quantum Benjamin-Ono equation. Non-linear dynamics of gapless edge states is determined by gapped modes in the bulk of FQH liquid. The dispersion of edge modes is traced to the double boundary layer of FQH states.
