It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative instability of the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) in the small Bjorken-$x$ region, is a mere artefact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO and NNLO, F_L(x,Q^2) turns out to be perturbatively rather stable already for Q^2 $\geq$ O(2-3 GeV^2).
We examine the role played in double parton interactions (DPI) by the parton--parton correlations originating from perturbative QCD parton splittings. Also presented are the results of the numerical analysis of the integrated DPI cross sections at Tevatron and LHC energies. To obtain the numerical results the knowledge of the single-parton GPDs gained by the HERA experiments was used to construct the non-perturbative input for generalized double parton distributions. The perturbative two-parton correlations induced by three-parton interactions contribute significantly to resolution of the long…
This talk brings attention to what is knowable from perturbative QCD theory on two-parton distribution functions in the light of CDF measuruments of the inclusive cross section for double parton scattering.
Based on parametric reasoning, we provide a simple dynamical picture of how a perturbative parton cascade, in interaction with a QCD medium, fills phase space as a function of time.
Revised formulas for the inclusive cross section of a triple parton scattering process in a hadron collision are suggested basing on the modified collinear three-parton distributions. The possible phenomenological issues are discussed.
We consider a model of transverse momentum production in which non-perturbative smearing takes place throughout the perturbative evolution, by a simple modification to an initial state parton shower algorithm. Using this as the important non-perturbative ingredient, we get a good fit to data over a wide range of energy. Combining it with the non-perturbative masses and cutoffs that are a feature of conventional parton showers also leads to a reasonable fit. We discuss the extrapolation to the LHC.
Recent CDF measurements of the inclusive cross section for a double parton scattering attach a great importance to any theoretical calculations of two-particle distribution functions. Using a parton interpretation of the leading logarithm diagrams of perturbative QCD theory, generalized Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-Dokshitzer equations for the two-parton distributions are re-obtained. The solutions of these equations are not at all the product of two single-parton distributions what is usually applied to the current analysis as ansatz.
Using the explicit form of the known single distribution functions (the Green's functions) in the double logarithm approximation of perturbative QCD, we analyze the structure of splitting diagrams as a source of double parton perturbative correlations in the proton. The related phenomenological effects are discussed for the conditions of the LHC experiments.
The cross section for transverse momentum dependent double parton scattering involves transverse momentum dependent double parton distributions (DTMDs). In the region of perturbative transverse momentum the DTMDs can be matched onto collinear double parton distributions. We present the framework and results for this matching, as well as the evolution equations for DTMDs in the region of large distance between the two partons. We discuss explicit results for one-loop matching coefficients and evolution kernels.
The asymptotic collinear factorisation theorem, which holds for diffractive deep-inelastic scattering, has important modifications in the sub-asymptotic HERA regime. We use perturbative QCD to quantify these modifications. The diffractive parton distributions are shown to satisfy an inhomogeneous evolution equation. We emphasise that it is necessary to include both the gluonic and sea-quark t-channel components of the perturbative Pomeron. The corresponding Pomeron-to-parton splitting functions are derived in the Appendix.
This paper presents the method of combining parton shower formalism with perturbative calculations (matrix elements) in form of a Monte-Carlo algorithm for the process g g -> Z b anti-b,consistenlty including the heavy quark masses and overlap removal.
We review the main results of next-to-leading order QCD analyses of polarized deep-inelastic scattering data, with special attention to the assessment of theoretical uncertainties.
We demonstrate that perturbative QCD leads to positive 3D parton--parton correlations inside nucleon explaining a factor two enhancement of the cross section of multi-parton interactions observed at Tevatron at $x_i\ge 0.01$ as compared to the predictions of the independent parton approximation. We also find that though perturbative correlations decrease with $x$ decreasing, the nonperturbative mechanism kicks in and should generate correlation which, at $x$ below $10^{-3}$, is comparable in magnitude with the perturbative one for $x\sim 0.01$.
It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative NNLO/NLO instability of the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) is a mere artefact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO and NNLO, F_L(x,Q^2) turns out to be perturbatively rather stable already for Q^2 $\geq$ O(2-3 GeV^2).
We discuss the role of two different types of diagram in the proton-proton double parton scattering (DPS) cross section - single and double perturbative splitting graphs. Using explicit calculations of simple graphs from these classes we show that the treatment of these graphs by the 'double PDF' framework for describing the DPS cross section, introduced a number of years ago by Snigirev and collaborators, is unsatisfactory. We suggest that a contribution from single perturbative splitting graphs should be included in the DPS cross section, albeit with a different geometrical prefactor to the …
Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are studied at the hadronic (nonperturbative) scale within different assumptions based on a relativistic constituent quark model. In particular, by means of a meson-cloud model we investigate the role of nonperturbative antiquark degrees of freedom and the valence quark contribution. A QCD evolution of the obtained GPDs is used to add perturbative effects and to investigate the GPDs' sensitivity to the nonperturbative ingredients of the calculation at larger (experimental) scale.
We derive the space-time distribution of energy and momentum deposited by a fast parton traversing a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma by treating the fast part on as the source of an external color field perturbing the medium. We then use our result as a source term for the linearized hydrodynamical equations of the medium. We show that the solution contains a sonic Mach cone and a dissipative wake if the parton moves at a supersonic speed.
We apply the phenomenological Reggeon Field Theory framework to investigate the relative importance of perturbative and nonperturbative multiparton correlations for the treatment of double parton scattering (DPS) in proton-proton collisions. We obtain a significant correction to the so-called effective cross section for DPS due to nonperturbative parton splitting. When combined with the corresponding perturbative contribution, this results in a rather weak energy and transverse momentum dependence of the effective cross section, in agreement with experimental observations at the Tevatron and t…
In this talk an introduction to generalized parton distributions is given. Recent developments are shortly reviewed, including non-perturbative calculations, phenomenological aspects and evaluation of higher order perturbative and power corrections.
A model for the parton distributions in hadrons is derived from simple physical arguments leading to an analytical expression for the valence distributions. The sea parton distributions arise mainly from pions in hadronic fluctuations. Evolving from a low Q^2_0 scale with DGLAP gives the proton structure function F_2(x,Q^2) in good agreement with DIS data. An extension of the model to describe intrinsic charm quarks in the proton is discussed.
By expanding functions of parton fragmentation into a heavy hadron in the inverse of the heavy quark mass $m_Q$ we attempt to factorize them into perturbative- and nonperturbative parts. In our approach the nonperturbative parts can be defined as matrix elements in heavy quark effective theory, the shape of the functions is predicted by perturbative QCD. In this work we neglect effect at order of $m_Q^{-2}$ and calculate the perturbative parts at one-loop level for heavy quark- and gluon fragmentation. We compare our results from leading log approximation with experimental results from $e^+e^-…
We discuss the space-time picture of scattering amplitudes with single and double ladder exchange in perturbative QCD. Particular emphasis is given to the Abramovsky Gribov Kanchelli (AGK) rules which describe the relative contributions of the diffractive dissociation and processes with other multiplicities to the elastic scattering amplitude. Inside the Pomeron Pomeron interaction vertices we find a new matrix which describes the transition from one s-cut to another and which goes beyond the original the AGK rules.
We present the extraction of unpolarized quark transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and the non-perturbative part of TMD evolution kernel from the global analysis of Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production data. The analysis is performed at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, using the $ζ$-prescription. The estimation of the error-propagation from the experimental uncertainties to non-perturbative function is made by the replica method. The importance of the inclusion of the precise LHC data and its influence on the determination of non-per…
We present a perturbative calculation of the transverse parton distribution functions in all partonic channels up to next-to-next-to-leading order based on a gauge invariant operator definition. We demonstrate for the first time that such a definition works beyond the first non-trivial order. We extract the coefficient functions relevant for a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic $q_T$ resummation in a large class of processes at hadron colliders.
Skewed parton distributions contain new non-perturbative information about hadronic states. Thus, their extraction from experimental data is an important goal. Properties and models for skewed parton distributions as well as their extraction, based on perturbative leading-order results, are shortly reviewed.
We incorporate the perturbative evolution effects in the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) calculated in effective light-front quark model for the nucleon. The perturbative effects enters into formalism through the evolution of GPDs according to the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-like (DGLAP) equation. We obtain the evolved GPDs in the momentum space and transverse impact parameter space. We observe that combining the light front quark model with the perturbative evolution effects, give the effective model for studying the phenomenological GPDs
A new code for the scale evolution of modified-minimal-subtraction-scheme parton densities is described. Through next-to-leading order the program uses exact splitting functions. In next-to-next-to-leading order approximate splitting functions are used. For efficiency the program includes analytical results for the evaluation of the weights required for the integrations over the longitudinal momentum fractions of the partons. It also incorporates the operator matrix elements required for the matching conditions across heavy flavor thresholds in higher order perturbation theory. The more effici…
Deep-inelastic scattering at small x is a new field of QCD phenomenology which HERA experiments started to explore. The data show the feature expected by the perturbative Regge asymptotics. We describe the parton picture of structure function evolution both for increasing $Q^2$ and for decreasing $x$ and discuss the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD on which this picture is based. The steep rise of the parton density towards smaller $x$ gets saturated by parton recombination. An essential improvement of the leading logarithmic approximation has to be worked out in order to satisfy the u…
We present a calculation of the perturbative quark-to-quark transverse parton distribution function at next-to-next-to-leading order based on a gauge invariant operator definition. We demonstrate for the first time that such a definition works beyond the first non-trivial order. We extract from our calculation the coefficient functions relevant for a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic $Q_T$ resummation in a large class of processes at hadron colliders.
We discuss the determination of polarized parton distributions from a next-to-leading order analysis of recent experimental data. We extract the first moment of the polarized quark and gluon distribution and assess the corresponding uncertainties, with special regard to those related to scheme dependence.
In this study we tried to emphasize the role parton shower plays in event generation, and in the physics of high energy event generation. We achieved this task by comparing the next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order results from EERAD3 with the next-to-leading order plus parton shower results from Vincia, and comparing both with real data.
In this paper we outline a new parton shower algorithm based on the Catani-Seymour dipole factorization. Our motivation is to have an algorithm which can naturally cooperate with the NLO calculations.
We discuss how lattice calculations can be a useful tool for the study of structure functions. Particular emphasis is given to the perturbative renormalization of the operators.
We argue that the perturbative QCD correlations contribute dominantly to the double parton distributions as compared to the nonperturbative ones in the limit of sufficiently large hard scales and for not parametrically small longitudinal momentum fractions.
I derive the space-time distribution of energy and momentum deposited by a fast parton traversing a perturbative quark-gluon plasma by considering the fast parton as the source of an external color field interacting with the medium. I include the medium's response to screen the fast parton's color field by incorporating dielectric functions and compare to the unscreened result.
Recent measurements for F_2(x,Q^2) have been analyzed in terms of the `dynamical' and `standard' parton model approach at NLO and NNLO of perturbative QCD. Having fixed the relevant NLO and NNLO parton distributions, the implications and predictions for the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) are presented. It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative NNLO/NLO instability of F_L(x,Q^2) is an artifact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO an…
We perform a next to leading order QCD global analysis of nuclear deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan data using the convolution approach to parameterize nuclear parton densities. We find both a significant improvement in the agreement with data compared to previous extractions, and substantial differences in the scale dependence of nuclear effects compared to leading order analyses.
Programs that calculate observables in quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order typically generate events that consist of partons rather than hadrons -- and just a few partons at that. These programs would be much more useful if the few partons were turned into parton showers, which could be given to one of the Monte Carlo event generators to produce hadron showers. In a previous paper, we have seen how to generate parton showers related to the final state collinear singularities of the perturbative calculation for the example of e+ + e- --> 3 jets. This paper discusses the treatment of…
We define and study the properties of generalized beam functions (BFs) and fragmenting jet functions (FJFs), which are fully-unintegrated parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) for perturbative k_T. We calculate at one loop the coefficients for matching them onto standard PDFs and FFs, correcting previous results for the BFs in the literature. Technical subtleties when measuring transverse momentum in dimensional regularization are clarified, and this enables us to renormalize in momentum space. Generalized BFs describe the distribution in the full four-momentum…
Heavy quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) play an important role in several Standard Model and New Physics processes. Most PDF analyses rely on the assumption that the charm and bottom PDFs are generated perturbatively by gluon splitting and do not include any non-perturbative degrees of freedom. However, a non-perturbative, intrinsic heavy quark PDFs have been predicted in the literature. We demonstrate that to a very good approximation the scale-evolution of the intrinsic heavy quark content of the nucleon is governed by non-singlet evolution equations, and use this approximation to m…
Programs that calculate observables in quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order typically suffer from the problem that, when considered as event generators, the events generated consist of partons rather than hadrons and just a few partons at that. Thus the events generated are completely unrealistic. These programs would be much more useful if the few partons were turned into parton showers, in the style of standard Monte Carlo event generators. Then the parton showers could be given to one of the Monte Carlo event generators to produce hadron showers. We show how to generate parton sh…
This is the introductory part of my PhD thesis which consists of two parts, the separate introduction and four published articles. The introduction begins by a technically detailed description of the DGLAP evolution and the fast numerical solving method for the DGLAP equations, which has been used in the numerical works of the published articles of this thesis. A write-up of the next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations for the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) and the Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production cross-sections is also included. The formalism of the inclusive single hadron production at …
We have calculated the splitting functions governing the evolution of the unpolarized parton distributions of the photon at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of massless perturbative QCD. The results, presented here mainly in terms of compact and accurate parametrizations, are consistent with our previous approximations based on the lowest six even-integer Mellin moments. Consequently the NNLO corrections are small in both the MSbar and the DIS_gamma factorization schemes at momentum fractions x >~ 0.1.
The theory of the perturbative pomeron, due to Lipatov and collaborators, is used to compute the probability of observing parton-parton elastic scattering and rapidity gaps between jets in hadron collisions at Tevatron energies.

We carry out next-to-leading order (NLO) parton model calculations for the standard hard ``QCD'' processes in the massless Schwinger model. The asymptotic expansion of the exact result for the deep inelastic cross section is used to infer the NLO distribution function. These distribution functions are then used to calculate the NLO Drell-Yan parton model cross section and it is found to agree with the corresponding term in the expansion of the exact result for the Drell-Yan cross section. Finally, by using the bosonization formula and the exact solutions we study the interference between diffe…
We prove collinear factorization theorem for the process $πγ^*\toπ$ at the twist-3 level in the covariant gauge by means of the Ward identity, concentrating on the two-parton case. It is shown that soft divergences cancel and collinear divergences are grouped into the pseudo-scalar and pseudo-tensor two-parton twist-3 pion distribution amplitudes. The delicate summation of a complete set of diagrams for achieving factorization in momentum, spin, and color spaces is emphasized. The proof is then extended to the exclusive semileptonic decay $B\toπl\barν$, assuming the hard scale to be of $O(\sqr…
A dedicated test of the perturbative QCD NLO parton evolution in the very small-$x$ region is performed. We find a good agreement with recent precision HERA-data for $F_2^p(x,Q^2)$, as well as with the present determination of the curvature of $F_2^p$. Characteristically, perturbative QCD evolutions result in a positive curvature which increases as $x$ decreases. Future precision measurements in the very small $x$-region, $x<10^{-4}$, could provide a sensitive test of the range of validity of perturbative QCD
We present a new formulation of jet quenching in perturbative QCD beyond the eikonal approximation. Multiple scattering in the medium is modelled through infra-red-continued (2 -> 2) scattering matrix elements in QCD and the parton shower describing further emissions. The interplay between these processes is arranged in terms of a formation time constraint such that coherent emissions can be treated consistently. Emerging partons are hadronised by the Lund string model, tuned to describe LEP data in conjunction with the parton shower. Based on this picture we obtain a good description of the n…
We review selected recent theoretical activity in perturbative QCD. We focus on progress in the description of parton densities, including latest developments in neural network parton densities, on the description of high multiplicity final states at the LHC at leading and next-to-leading order, on progress in next-to-next-to-leading order, and on novel developments in jets physics.
The theory of the perturbative pomeron, due to Lipatov and collaborators, is used to compute the probability of observing parton-parton elastic scattering and rapidity gaps between jets in hadron collisions at very high energies.
The relevance of parton interaction rates for observables of a quark- gluon plasma and for testing field theoretical methods is exhibited. Using the Braaten-Pisarski method the interaction rate as well as the transport rate beyond the leading logarithm approximation are estimated. Limts on the validity of perturbative QCD for relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed.
We give a description of double parton scattering with measured transverse momenta in the final state, extending the formalism for factorisation and resummation developed by Collins, Soper and Sterman for the production of colourless particles. After a detailed analysis of their colour structure, we derive and solve evolution equations in rapidity and renormalisation scale for the relevant soft factors and double parton distributions. We show how in the perturbative regime, transverse momentum dependent double parton distributions can be expressed in terms of simpler nonperturbative quantities…
The correct description of Double Parton Scattering (DPS), which represents a background in several channels for the search of new Physics at the LHC, requires the knowledge of double parton distribution functions (dPDFs). These quantities represent also a novel tool for the study of the three-dimensional nucleon structure, complementary to the possibilities offered by electromagnetic probes. In this paper we analyze dPDFs using Poincaré covariant predictions obtained by using a Light-Front constituent quark model proposed in a recent paper, and QCD evolution. We study to what extent factorize…
This document describes a Fortran 95 package for carrying out DGLAP evolution and other common manipulations of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The PDFs are represented on a grid in x-space so as to avoid limitations on the functional form of input distributions. Good speed and accuracy are obtained through the representation of splitting functions in terms of their convolution with a set of piecewise polynomial basis functions, and Runge-Kutta techniques are used for the evolution in Q. Unpolarised evolution is provided to NNLO, including heavy-quark thresholds in the MSbar scheme, and …
