This talk brings attention to what is knowable from perturbative QCD theory on two-parton distribution functions in the light of CDF measuruments of the inclusive cross section for double parton scattering.
We examine the role played in double parton interactions (DPI) by the parton--parton correlations originating from perturbative QCD parton splittings. Also presented are the results of the numerical analysis of the integrated DPI cross sections at Tevatron and LHC energies. To obtain the numerical results the knowledge of the single-parton GPDs gained by the HERA experiments was used to construct the non-perturbative input for generalized double parton distributions. The perturbative two-parton correlations induced by three-parton interactions contribute significantly to resolution of the long…
Based on parametric reasoning, we provide a simple dynamical picture of how a perturbative parton cascade, in interaction with a QCD medium, fills phase space as a function of time.
Revised formulas for the inclusive cross section of a triple parton scattering process in a hadron collision are suggested basing on the modified collinear three-parton distributions. The possible phenomenological issues are discussed.
We consider a model of transverse momentum production in which non-perturbative smearing takes place throughout the perturbative evolution, by a simple modification to an initial state parton shower algorithm. Using this as the important non-perturbative ingredient, we get a good fit to data over a wide range of energy. Combining it with the non-perturbative masses and cutoffs that are a feature of conventional parton showers also leads to a reasonable fit. We discuss the extrapolation to the LHC.
Recent CDF measurements of the inclusive cross section for a double parton scattering attach a great importance to any theoretical calculations of two-particle distribution functions. Using a parton interpretation of the leading logarithm diagrams of perturbative QCD theory, generalized Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-Dokshitzer equations for the two-parton distributions are re-obtained. The solutions of these equations are not at all the product of two single-parton distributions what is usually applied to the current analysis as ansatz.
Using the explicit form of the known single distribution functions (the Green's functions) in the double logarithm approximation of perturbative QCD, we analyze the structure of splitting diagrams as a source of double parton perturbative correlations in the proton. The related phenomenological effects are discussed for the conditions of the LHC experiments.
The cross section for transverse momentum dependent double parton scattering involves transverse momentum dependent double parton distributions (DTMDs). In the region of perturbative transverse momentum the DTMDs can be matched onto collinear double parton distributions. We present the framework and results for this matching, as well as the evolution equations for DTMDs in the region of large distance between the two partons. We discuss explicit results for one-loop matching coefficients and evolution kernels.
The asymptotic collinear factorisation theorem, which holds for diffractive deep-inelastic scattering, has important modifications in the sub-asymptotic HERA regime. We use perturbative QCD to quantify these modifications. The diffractive parton distributions are shown to satisfy an inhomogeneous evolution equation. We emphasise that it is necessary to include both the gluonic and sea-quark t-channel components of the perturbative Pomeron. The corresponding Pomeron-to-parton splitting functions are derived in the Appendix.
This paper presents the method of combining parton shower formalism with perturbative calculations (matrix elements) in form of a Monte-Carlo algorithm for the process g g -> Z b anti-b,consistenlty including the heavy quark masses and overlap removal.
We review the main results of next-to-leading order QCD analyses of polarized deep-inelastic scattering data, with special attention to the assessment of theoretical uncertainties.
We discuss the structure of infrared and ultraviolet singularities in on-shell QCD and supersymmetric QCD amplitudes at one-loop order. Previous results, valid for massless partons, are extended to the case of massive partons. Using dimensional regularization, we present a general factorization formula that controls both the singular epsilon-poles and the logarithmic contributions that become singular for vanishing masses. We introduce generalized Altarelli--Parisi splitting functions and discuss their relations with the singular terms in the amplitudes. The dependence on the regularization sc…
We discuss recent theoretical results on diffractive deeply inelastic scattering, focusing on the partonic picture of diffraction in configuration space and the predictions for the beta behavior and the scaling violation.
We introduce a method for the separation of soft and collinear logarithms in QCD parton evolution at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$ and at leading color. Using an implementation of the technique in the Dire parton shower, we analyze the numerical impact of genuine triple-collinear corrections from quark pair emission in $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons.
Double parton distribution functions (DPDFs) are used in the QCD description of double parton scattering. The DPDFs evolve with hard scales through QCD evolution equations which obey nontrivial momentum and valence quark number sum rules. We describe an attempt to construct initial conditions for the evolution equations which exactly fulfil these sum rules and discuss its shortcomings. We also discuss the factorization of the DPDFs into a product of two single parton distribution functions at small values of the parton momentum fractions.
We demonstrate that perturbative QCD leads to positive 3D parton--parton correlations inside nucleon explaining a factor two enhancement of the cross section of multi-parton interactions observed at Tevatron at $x_i\ge 0.01$ as compared to the predictions of the independent parton approximation. We also find that though perturbative correlations decrease with $x$ decreasing, the nonperturbative mechanism kicks in and should generate correlation which, at $x$ below $10^{-3}$, is comparable in magnitude with the perturbative one for $x\sim 0.01$.
It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative NNLO/NLO instability of the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) is a mere artefact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO and NNLO, F_L(x,Q^2) turns out to be perturbatively rather stable already for Q^2 $\geq$ O(2-3 GeV^2).
Substantial progress has been made recently in the formalisms which form the basis of event generators. I discuss some of the ideas involved, emphasizing the role of higher-order QCD corrections and their interplay with parton showers
We derive new positivity bounds on spin-dependent parton distributions in multicolored QCD. They are stronger than Soffer inequality. We check that the new inequalities are stable under one-loop DGLAP evolution to higher normalization points.
The QCD treatment of the photon structure beyond the leading order is discussed with emphasis on a proper choice of the factorization scheme and/or the boundary conditions. Recent parametrizations of the photon's parton content are examined and compared. The sensitivity of the photon structure function on the QCD scale parameter is reconsidered.
We discuss the role of two different types of diagram in the proton-proton double parton scattering (DPS) cross section - single and double perturbative splitting graphs. Using explicit calculations of simple graphs from these classes we show that the treatment of these graphs by the 'double PDF' framework for describing the DPS cross section, introduced a number of years ago by Snigirev and collaborators, is unsatisfactory. We suggest that a contribution from single perturbative splitting graphs should be included in the DPS cross section, albeit with a different geometrical prefactor to the …
Partons are defined as the quanta in a Fock space description of a hadron. Gluon saturation is described in the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation for a large nucleus. The elements of DGLAP and BFKL evolution are given with the BFKL equation derived in a large-$N_c$ dipole formalism. A more general discussion of saturation is given in terms of a dipole scattering on a nucleon or nucleus. Possible evidence for saturation at HERA is discussed.
I describe MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$, a novel method to match NNLO QCD computations with Parton Showers, and present a selection of results for color-singlet production at the LHC.
We present a parton-shower matched NNLO QCD calculation for hadronic final state production in Deep Inelastic Scattering. The computation is based on the UNLOPS method and is implemented in the publicly available event generation framework SHERPA. Results are compared to measurements performed by the H1 collaboration.
Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are studied at the hadronic (nonperturbative) scale within different assumptions based on a relativistic constituent quark model. In particular, by means of a meson-cloud model we investigate the role of nonperturbative antiquark degrees of freedom and the valence quark contribution. A QCD evolution of the obtained GPDs is used to add perturbative effects and to investigate the GPDs' sensitivity to the nonperturbative ingredients of the calculation at larger (experimental) scale.
We discuss how the UN2LOPS scheme for matching NNLO calculations to parton showers can be applied to processes with large higher-order perturbative QCD corrections. We focus on Higgs-boson production through gluon fusion as an example. We also present an NNLO fixed-order event generator for this reaction.
We present a simple approach to combine NNLO QCD calculations and parton showers, based on the UNLOPS technique. We apply the method to the computation of Drell-Yan lepton-pair production at the Large Hadron Collider. We comment on possible improvements and intrinsic uncertainties.
The formulas directly connecting parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) at the next to leading order (NLO) QCD with the same quantities at the leading order (LO) are derived. These formulas are universal, i.e. have the same form for all kinds of PDFs and FFs, differing only in the respective splitting functions entering there.
It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative instability of the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) in the small Bjorken-$x$ region, is a mere artefact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO and NNLO, F_L(x,Q^2) turns out to be perturbatively rather stable already for Q^2 $\geq$ O(2-3 GeV^2).
Three-body decay functions in space-like parton branches are implemented to evaluate transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions in the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Interference contributions due to the next-to-leading order contribution are taken into account for the evaluation of the transverse momenta in initial state parton radiations. Some properties of the decay functions are also examined. As an example, we compare our results with an algorithm proposed in Ref.1), in which a transverse momentum distributions are evaluated…
We derive the space-time distribution of energy and momentum deposited by a fast parton traversing a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma by treating the fast part on as the source of an external color field perturbing the medium. We then use our result as a source term for the linearized hydrodynamical equations of the medium. We show that the solution contains a sonic Mach cone and a dissipative wake if the parton moves at a supersonic speed.
For the first time the process-independent parameter of double parton scattering, $σ_{\rm eff}^{\rm exp}$, has been measured newly in the D0 experiment at the three different resolution scales. If we interpret the measurement as a decrease of the effective cross section with a growth of the resolution scale it can indicate the QCD evolution of double parton distributions.
In this paper a solution is given to the nonlinear equation which describes the evolution of the parton cascade in the case of the high parton density. The related physics is discussed as well as some applications to heavy ion-ion collisions.
We calculate the leading twist valence quark distribution in the pion in the franework of QCD sum rules with nonlocal condensates. Particular attention has been paid to the correct account of the bilocal power corrections.
We apply the phenomenological Reggeon Field Theory framework to investigate the relative importance of perturbative and nonperturbative multiparton correlations for the treatment of double parton scattering (DPS) in proton-proton collisions. We obtain a significant correction to the so-called effective cross section for DPS due to nonperturbative parton splitting. When combined with the corresponding perturbative contribution, this results in a rather weak energy and transverse momentum dependence of the effective cross section, in agreement with experimental observations at the Tevatron and t…
Parton recombination is reconsidered in perturbation theory without using the AGK cutting rules in the leading order of the recombination. We use time-ordered perturbation theory to sum the cut diagrams, which are neglected in the GLR evolution equation. We present a set of new evolution equations including parton recombination.
This talk is given at "Continious Advances in QCD", Minnesota, April 16-19,1998. It is a brief report on our results in high parton density QCD. The main goal of this talk is to discuss the new evolution equation which was obtained and solved by A.Ayala, M. Ducati and E.Levin and by E. Gotsman, E. Levin and U. Maor, and to share with you the physics can be recovered by this equation.
A new method for combining QCD matrix elements and parton showers in Monte Carlo simulations of hadronic final states is outlined. The aim is to provide at least a leading-order description of all hard multi-jet configurations together with jet fragmentation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, while avoiding the most serious problems of double counting.
We study the gluon parton densities [parton distribution functions (PDFs), transverse momentum distributions (TMDs), generalized parton distributions (GPDs)] and form factors in soft-wall AdS/QCD. We show that the power behavior of gluon parton distributions and form factors at large values of the light-cone variable and large values of square momentum is consistent with quark counting rules. We also show that the transverse momentum distributions derived in our approach obey the model-independent Mulders-Rodrigues inequalities without referring to specific model parameters. All gluon parton d…
We present a new formalism for parton shower simulation of QCD jets, which incorporates the following features: invariance under boosts along jet axes, improved treatment of heavy quark fragmentation, angular-ordered evolution with soft gluon coherence, more accurate soft gluon angular distributions, and better coverage of phase space. It is implemented in the new HERWIG++ event generator.
QCD corrections to the QED formula for parton distribution functions of the longitudinal virtual photon are derived in the leading--logarithmic approximation. It is shown that the resulting PDF satisfy the same homogeneous evolution equations as those of hadrons, but contrary to the latter are perturbatively calculable. Properties of these distribution functions are discussed and their phenomenological consequences outlined.
We argue that the collinear factorization of the fragmentation functions in high energy hadron and nuclei collisions breaks down at transverse momenta kT < Qs/g due to high parton densities in the colliding hadrons and/or nuclei. We calculate, at next-to-leading order in projectile parton density and to all orders in target parton density, the double-inclusive cross section for production of a pair of gluons in the scalar J^(PC)=0^(++) channel. Using the low energy theorems of QCD we find the inclusive cross section for pi-meson production.
An analytical method is presented to solve generalized QCD evolution equations for the time development of parton cascades in a nuclear environment. Closed solutions for the spectra of produced partons with respect to the variables time, longitudinal momentum and virtuality are obtained under some idealizing assumptions about the composition of the nuclear medium. Several characteristic features of the resulting parton distributions are discussed. One of the main conclusions is that the evolution of a parton shower in medium is dilated as compared to free space and is accompanied by an enhance…
A factorization algorithm for a patron shower model based on the evolution of momentum distributions proposed in a previous work is studied. The scaling violation of initial state parton distributions is generated using parton showers to an accuracy of the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using the information from only splitting functions and initial parton distributions at some fixed low energy. In the algorithm proposed in this paper, the total momentum of the initial state partons is conserved in any factorization scheme for mass singularities. As an …
It is demonstrated that present $e^+e^-$ and DIS ep data on the structure of the virtual photon can be understood entirely in terms of the standard `naive' quark--parton model box approach. Thus the QCD renormalization group (RG) improved parton distributions of virtual photons, in particular their gluonic component, have not yet been observed. The appropriate kinematical regions for their future observation are pointed out as well as suitable measurements which may demonstrate their relevance.
We present a study of proton GPDs in both momentum and position spaces using proton wavefunction obtained from AdS/ QCD. Here we consider the soft wall model. The results are compared with a phenomenological model of proton GPDs.
In this talk an introduction to generalized parton distributions is given. Recent developments are shortly reviewed, including non-perturbative calculations, phenomenological aspects and evaluation of higher order perturbative and power corrections.
I use QCD sum rule ideas to construct models for generalized parton distributions. To this end, the perturbative parts of QCD sum rules for the pion and nucleon electromagnetic form factors are interpreted in terms of GPDs and two models are discussed. One of them takes the double Borel transform at adjusted value of the Borel parameter as a model for nonforward parton densities, and another is based on the local duality relation. Possible ways of improving these Ans{ä}tze are briefly discussed.
The HERA diffractive structure function data are interpreted in terms of `diffractive parton distributions' which satisfy DGLAP evolution. These distributions are modeled assuming that the scattering takes place off a colour singlet `pomeron' target. A quantitative test of the universality of diffractive parton distributions is proposed.
The transverse-momentum dependent quark distributions are studied in the limit of the large number of colors Nc. The leading orders of Nc are determined for all twist-2 distributions including the T-odd functions. The isospin structure of the dominant contributions is found.
We show that the one-loop QCD correction to deeply-virtual Compton scattering can be factorized into the finite perturbative contributions and the collinearly-divergent terms, which correspond to the matrix elements of the off-forward parton distributions. As a by-product, we obtain the next-to-leading order coefficient functions in the generalized operator product expansion of two vector currents.
Double parton distribution functions (dPDFs), entering the double parton scattering (DPS) cross section, are unknown fundamental quantities encoding new interesting properties of hadrons. Here, the pion dPDFs are investigated within different holographic QCD quark models in order to access their basic features. Results of the calculation,s obtained within the AdS/QCD soft-wall approach, have been compared with predictions of lattice QCD evaluations of the pion two-current correlation functions. The present analysis confirms that double parton correlations, affecting dPDFs, are very important a…
A model for the parton distributions in hadrons is derived from simple physical arguments leading to an analytical expression for the valence distributions. The sea parton distributions arise mainly from pions in hadronic fluctuations. Evolving from a low Q^2_0 scale with DGLAP gives the proton structure function F_2(x,Q^2) in good agreement with DIS data. An extension of the model to describe intrinsic charm quarks in the proton is discussed.
We consider the impact that can be made on our understanding of parton distributions (PDFs) and QCD from early measurements at the LHCb experiment. The high rapidity values make the experiment uniquely suited to a detailed study of small-x parton distributions and hence will make a significant contribution towards the clarification of both experimental and theoretical uncertainties on PDFs and their applications.
