We experimentally and numerically study a NbN superconducting stripline resonator integrated with a microbridge. We find that the response of the system to monochromatic excitation exhibits intermittency, namely, noise-induced jumping between coexisting steady-state and limit-cycle responses. A theoretical model that assumes piecewise linear dynamics yields partial agreement with the experimental findings.
In this experimental study we show that the coupling between Nb/NbN superconducting microwave resonators and their feedline can be made amplitude dependent. We employ this mechanism to tune the resonators into critical coupling condition, a preferable mode of operation for a wide range of applications. Moreover we examine the dependence of critical coupling state on other parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Possible novel applications based on such nonlinear coupling are briefly discussed.
Microwave resonators with high quality factors have enabled many recent breakthroughs with superconducting qubits and photon detectors, typically operated in shielded environments to reduce the ambient magnetic field. Insufficient shielding or pulsed control fields can introduce vortices, leading to reduced quality factors, although increased pinning can mitigate this effect. A narrow slot etched into the resonator surface provides a straightforward method for pinning enhancement without otherwise affecting the resonator. Resonators patterned with such a slot exhibited over an order of magnitu…
The influence of dendritic magnetic-flux penetration on the microwave response of superconducting MgB2 films is investigated by a coplanar resonator technique. The peculiar feature consists of jumps in the resonance curve, induced by vortex avalanches freezing flux inside the resonator. Due to a shaking effect, microwave currents maintain the vortex system close to a nonequilibrium state, resulting in dendrite branching. Avalanche-size distributions before and after flux-pinning tailoring by heavy-ion irradiation are fully consistent with molecular dynamics simulations reported in literature.
We describe the use of a cryogenic near-field scanning microwave microscope to image microwave electric fields from superconducting and normal-metal microstrip resonators. The microscope employs an open-ended coaxial probe and operates from 77 to 300 K in the 0.01-20 GHz frequency range with a spatial resolution of about 200 mm. We describe the operation of the system and present microwave images of Cu and Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 microstrip resonators, showing standing wave patterns at the fundamental and second harmonic frequencies.
We demonstrate the operation of superconducting coplanar microwave resonators in a very large frequency range up to 50 GHz. The resonators are fabricated from niobium thin films on sapphire substrates and optimized for these high frequencies by small chip sizes. We study numerous harmonics of the resonators at temperatures between 1.5 K and 6 K, and we determine quality factors of up to 25000 at 1.5 K. As an example for spectroscopy applications of such resonators we detect the superconducting transition of a bulk tin sample at multiple probing frequencies.
Microwave spectroscopy is a powerful experimental tool to reveal information on the intrinsic properties of superconductors. Superconducting stripline resonators, where the material under study constitutes one of the ground planes, offer a high sensitivity to investigate superconducting bulk samples. In order to improve this measurement technique, we have studied stripline resonators made of niobium, and we compare the results to lead stripline resonators. With this technique we are able to determine the temperature dependence of the complex conductivity of niobium and the energy gap $Δ(0)=2.1…
Using a near-field microwave technique, two-dimensional images have been made of the second and third order intermodulation distortion (IMD) of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 and YBa2Cu3O7 thin film microwave resonators. It was found that second and third order IMD do not have identical spatial distributions, which indicates that physical mechanisms play different roles in their generation. This technique enables the investigation of the roles of these mechanisms. As an illustration, the sensitivity to magnetic fluxons of the two orders is described, with second order being more sensitive to fluxon density.
We have investigated the correlation between the microwave loss and patterning method for coplanar waveguide titanium nitride resonators fabricated on Si wafers. Three different methods were investigated: fluorine- and chlorine-based reactive ion etches and an argon-ion mill. At high microwave probe powers the reactive etched resonators showed low internal loss, whereas the ion-milled samples showed dramatically higher loss. At single-photon powers we found that the fluorine-etched resonators exhibited substantially lower loss than the chlorine-etched ones. We interpret the results by use of n…
In a superconductor absorption of photons with an energy below the superconducting gap leads to redistribution of quasiparticles over energy and thus induces a strong non-equilibrium quasiparticle energy distribution. We have measured the electrodynamic response, quality factor and resonant frequency, of a superconducting aluminium microwave resonator as a function of microwave power and temperature. Below 200 mK, both the quality factor and resonant frequency decrease with increasing microwave power, consistent with the creation of excess quasiparticles due to microwave absorption. Counterint…
In this paper we report some extraordinary nonlinear dynamics measured in the resonance curve of NbN superconducting stripline microwave resonators. Among the nonlinearities observed: aburpt bifurcations in the resonance response at relatively low input powers, asymmetric resonances, multiple jumps within the resonance band, resonance frequency drift, frequency hysteresis, hysteresis loops changing direction and critical coupling phenomenon. Weak links in the NbN grain structure are hypothesized as the source of the nonlinearities.
Planar superconducting microwave resonators are key elements in a variety of technical applications and also act as sensitive probes for microwave spectroscopy of various materials of interest. Here superconducting Pb is a suitable material as a basis for microwave stripline resonators. To utilize Pb stripline resonators in a variable magnetic field (e.g. in ESR), the electrodynamics of such resonators in finite magnetic field has to be well understood. Therefore we performed microwave transmission measurements on superconducting Pb stripline resonators in a variable, parallel magnetic field. …
The operation of superconducting coplanar waveguide cavities, as used for circuit quantum electrodynamics and kinetic inductance detectors, in perpendicular magnetic fields normally leads to a reduction of the device performance due to energy dissipating Abrikosov vortices. We experimentally investigate the vortex induced energy losses in such Nb resonators with different spatial distributions of micropatterned pinning sites (antidots) by transmission spectroscopy measurements at 4.2 K. In comparison to resonators without antidots we find a significant reduction of vortex induced losses and th…
We report the measurement of intermodulation gain in NbN superconducting stripline resonators. In the intermodulation measurements we inject two unequal tones into the oscillator, the pump and signal, both lying within the resonance band. At the onset of instability of the reflected pump we obtain a simultaneous gain of both the idler and the reflected signal. The measured gain in both cases can be as high as 15 dB, whereas to the best of our knowledge intermodulation gain greater than unity in superconducting resonators has not been reported before in the scientific literature.
The 2nd and 3rd order nonlinear microwave response of a superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thin film resonator was synchronously measured using three input tones. This technique permits the local measurement, and hence mapping, of intermodulation distortion (IMD) inside the resonator. 2nd and 3rd order IMD measured with a fixed probe relaxed in remarkably different ways after the removal of a static magnetic field. The 2nd order IMD relaxed by two different magnetic processes, a fast process that appears related to bulk remanent magnetization, and a slow process that fits the description of Bean and Li…
We experimentally investigate the vortex induced energy losses in niobium coplanar waveguide resonators with and without quasihexagonal arrays of nanoholes (antidots), where large-area antidot patterns have been fabricated using self-assembling microsphere lithography. We perform transmission spectroscopy experiments around 6.25 and 12.5 GHz in magnetic field cooling and zero field cooling procedures with perpendicular magnetic fields up to B=27 mT at a temperature T=4.2 K. We find that the introduction of antidot arrays into resonators reduces vortex induced losses by more than one order of m…
In this work we characterize the unusual nonlinear dynamics of the resonance response, exhibited by our NbN superconducting microwave resonators, using different operating conditions. The nonlinear dynamics, occurring at relatively low input powers (2-4 orders of magnitude lower than Nb), and which include among others, bifurcations in the resonance curve, hysteresis loops and resonance frequency shift, are measured herein using varying temperature, applied magnetic field, white noise and rapid frequency sweeps. Based on these measurement results, we consider a hypothesis according to which Jo…
We have measured noise in thin-film superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators. This noise appears entirely as phase noise, equivalent to a jitter of the resonance frequency. In contrast, amplitude fluctuations are not observed at the sensitivity of our measurement. The ratio between the noise power in the phase and amplitude directions is large, in excess of 30 dB. These results have important implications for resonant readouts of various devices such as detectors, amplifiers, and qubits. We suggest that the phase noise is due to two-level systems in dielectric materials.
Micro-channels of nanosized columnar tracks were planted by heavy-ion irradiation into superconducting microwave microstrip resonators that were patterned from YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films on LaAlO3 substrates. Three different ion fluences were used, producing different column densities, with each fluence having a successively greater impact on the nonlinearity of the device, as compared to a control sample. Photoresponse images made with a 638 nm rastered laser beam revealed that the channel is a location of enhanced photoresponse and a hot spot for the generation of intermodulation distortion. The…
We describe a unified quantum approach for analyzing the scattering coefficients of superconducting microwave resonators with a variety of geometries. We also generalize the method to a chain of resonators with time delays, and reveal several transport properties similar to a photonic crystal. It is shown that both the quantum and classical analyses provide consistent results, and they together reveal different decay and decoherence mechanisms in a general microwave resonator. These results form a solid basis for understanding the scattering spectrums of networks of microwave resonators, and p…
We investigated both theoretically and experimentally open-ended coplanar waveguide resonators with rf SQUIDs embedded in the central conductor at different positions. These rf SQUIDs can be tuned by an external magnetic field and thus may exhibit the non-centrosymmetric nonlinearity of $χ^{(2)}$ type with suppressed Kerr nonlinearity. We demonstrated that this nonlinearity allows for efficient mixing of $λ/2$ and $λ$ modes in the cavity and thus enables various parametric effects with three wave mixing. These effects are the second harmonic generation, the half tone generation, the parametric…
A superconducting boron doped nanocrystalline diamond (B-NCD) coplanar waveguide resonator (CPR) is presented for kinetic inductance ($L_k$) and penetration depth ($λ_{\rm{L}}$) measurements at microwave frequencies of 0.4 to 1.2 GHz and at temperatures below 3 K. Using a simplified effective medium CPR approach, this work demonstrates that thin granular B-NCD films ($t\approx $ 500 nm) on Si have a large penetration depth ($λ_{\rm{L}}\approx 4.3$ to 4.4 $μ$m), and therefore an associated high kinetic inductance ($L_{k,\square} \approx $ 670 to 690 pH/$\square$). These values are much larger t…
Measurement of harmonic power on a suspended stripline microwave resonator patterned out of thin film YBa_2Cu_3O_7 (YBCO) has been carried out as a function of temperature and microwave power. The third harmonic power P_3 shows a subtle nonlinear dependence on the fundamental power P_1 on a log-log scale. Fit to a straight line yields slopes of P_3 vs. P_1 between 1.5 to 3, contrary to elementary calculations that predict a slope of exactly 3. It is shown that third harmonic power generated from higher order terms in the nonlinear impedance could account for the discrepancy quantitatively with…
We have generated frequency combs spanning 0.5 to 20 GHz in superconducting half wave resonators at T=3 K. Thin films of niobium-titanium nitride enabled this development due to their low loss, high nonlinearity, low frequency dispersion, and high critical temperature. The combs nucleate as sidebands around multiples of the pump frequency. Selection rules for the allowed frequency emission are calculated using perturbation theory and the measured spectrum is shown to agree with the theory. The sideband spacing is measured to be accurate to 1 part in 10 million. The sidebands coalesce into a co…
We describe a unified classical approach for analyzing the scattering coefficients of superconducting microwave resonators with a variety of geometries. To fill the gap between experiment and theory, we also consider the influences of small circuit asymmetry and the finite length of the feedlines, and describe a procedure to correct them in typical measurement results. We show that, similar to the transmission coefficient of a hanger-type resonator, the reflection coefficient of a necklace- or bridge-type resonator does also contain a reference point which can be used to characterize the elect…
We give a quantum master equation description of the measurement scheme based on a coplanar microwave cavity capacitively coupled to nano mechanical resonator. The system exhibits a rich bifurcation structure that is analogous to sub/second harmonic generation in nonlinear optics. We show how it may be configured as a bifurcation amplifier transducer for weak force detection.
We present fast tunable superconducting microwave resonators fabricated from planar NbN on a sapphire substrate. The $3λ/4$ wavelength resonators are tuning fork shaped and tuned by passing a dc current which controls the kinetic inductance of the tuning fork prongs. The $λ/4$ section from the open end operates as an integrated impedance converter which creates a nearly perfect short for microwave currents at the dc terminal coupling points, thus preventing microwave energy leakage through the dc lines. We measure an internal quality factor $Q_{\rm int}>10{^{5}}$ over the entire tuning range. …
We study thermal instability and formation of local hot spots in a driven nonlinear NbN superconducting microwave resonator. White noise injected into the resonator results in transitions between the metastable states via a process consisting of two stages. In the first stage, the input noise entering the system induces fluctuations in the resonator mode. While, in the second one, these mode fluctuations result in phase transitions of the hot spot due to induced temperature fluctuations. The associated noise-activated escape rate is calculated theoretically, and also measured experimentally by…
We have measured the number of quasiparticles and their lifetime in aluminium superconducting microwave resonators. The number of excess quasiparticles below 160 mK decreases from 72 to 17 $μ$m$^{-3}$ with a 6 dB decrease of the microwave power. The quasiparticle lifetime increases accordingly from 1.4 to 3.5 ms. These properties of the superconductor were measured through the spectrum of correlated fluctuations in the quasiparticle system and condensate of the superconductor, which show up in the resonator amplitude and phase respectively. Because uncorrelated noise sources vanish, fluctuatio…
Applications in quantum information processing and photon detectors are stimulating a race to produce the highest possible quality factor on-chip superconducting microwave resonators. We have tested the surface-dominated loss hypothesis by systematically studying the role of geometrical parameters on the internal quality factors of compact resonators patterned in Nb on sapphire. Their single-photon internal quality factors were found to increase with the distance between capacitor fingers, the width of the capacitor fingers, and the impedance of the resonator. Quality factors were improved fro…
We describe and characterize a microwave setup to probe the Andreev levels of a superconducting atomic contact. The contact is part of a superconducting loop inductively coupled to a superconducting coplanar resonator. By monitoring the resonator reflection coefficient close to its resonance frequency as a function of both flux through the loop and frequency of a second tone we perform spectroscopy of the transition between two Andreev levels of highly transmitting channels of the contact. The results indicate how to perform coherent manipulation of these states.
The non-linear microwave surface impedance of patterned YBCO thin films, was measured using a suspended line resonator in the presence of a perpendicular DC magnetic field of magnitude comparable to that of the microwave field. Signature of the virgin state was found to be absent even for relatively low microwave power levels. The microwave loss was initially found to decrease for small applied DC field before increasing again. Also, non-linearities inherent in the sample were found to be substantially suppressed at low powers at these applied fields. These two features together can lead to si…
We present an experimental demonstration as well as a theoretical model of an integrated circuit designed for the manipulation of a microwave field down to the single-photon level. The device is made of a superconducting resonator coupled to a transmission line via a second frequency-tunable resonator. The tunable resonator can be used as a tunable coupler between the fixed resonator and the transmission line. Moreover, the manipulation of the microwave field between the two resonators is possible. In particular, we demonstrate the swapping of the field from one resonator to the other by pulsi…
Spatially-resolved techniques of laser scanning microscopy (LSM) have been used to image simultaneously the spatial variations of (i) rf current flow, J$_RF$(x,y), of (ii) areas of resistive dissipation and (iii) the sources of microwave nonlinearity (NL) in an operating superconducting resonator. The RF power dependent spatial evolution of these linear and NL microwave properties in the meander strip YBCO/LAO superconducting resonator have been LSM probed at different temperatures below Tc. The influence of both topologies of the twin-domain YBCO structure and of J$_RF$(x,y) peaks at the edge…
We present a system which allows to tune the coupling between a superconducting resonator and a transmission line. This storage resonator is addressed through a second, coupling resonator, which is frequency-tunable and controlled by a magnetic flux applied to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). We experimentally demonstrate that the lifetime of the storage resonator can be tuned by more than three orders of magnitude. A field can be stored for 18 μs when the coupling resonator is tuned off resonance and it can be released in 14 ns when the coupling resonator is tuned on res…
We consider a theoretical model for a nonlinear nanomechanical resonator coupled to a superconducting microwave resonator. The nanomechanical resonator is driven parametrically at twice its resonance frequency, while the superconducting microwave resonator is driven with two tones that differ in frequency by an amount equal to the parametric driving frequency. We show that the semi-classical approximation of this system has an interesting fixed point bifurcation structure. In the semi-classical dynamics a transition from stable fixed points to limit cycles is observed as one moves from positiv…

We realize tunable coupling between two superconducting transmission line resonators. The coupling is mediated by a non-hysteretic rf SQUID acting as a flux-tunable mutual inductance between the resonators. From the mode distance observed in spectroscopy experiments, we derive a coupling strength ranging between -320MHz and 37 MHz. In the case where the coupling strength is about zero, the microwave power cross transmission between the two resonators can be reduced by almost four orders of magnitude compared to the case where the coupling is switched on. In addition, we observe parametric ampl…
Superconducting microwave resonators are reliable circuits widely used for detection and as test devices for material research. A reliable determination of their external and internal quality factors is crucial for many modern applications, which either require fast measurements or operate in the single photon regime with small signal to noise ratios. Here, we use the circle fit technique with diameter correction and provide a step by step guide for implementing an algorithm for robust fitting and calibration of complex resonator scattering data in the presence of noise. The speedup and robust…
We design and fabricate two types of superconducting niobium coplanar waveguide microwave resonators with different coupling capacitors on high purity Si substrates. Their microwave transmissions are measured at the temperatures of 20 mK. It is found that these two types of resonators possess significantly-different loaded quality factors; one is $5.6\times{10}^{3}$, and the other is $4.0\times{10}^{4}$. The measured data are fitted well by classical ABCD matrix approach. We found that the transmission peak deviates from the standard Lorentizian with a frequency broadening.
We present a systematic analysis of the internal losses of superconducting coplanar waveguide microwave resonators based on niobium thin films on silicon substrates. In particular, we investigate losses introduced by Nb/Al interfaces in the center conductor, which is important for experiments where Al based Josephson junctions are integrated into Nb based circuits. We find that these interfaces can be a strong source for two-level state (TLS) losses, when the interfaces are not positioned at current nodes of the resonator. In addition to TLS losses, for resonators including Al, quasiparticle l…
We present a hybrid microwave SQUID multiplexer that combines two frequency-division multiplexing techniques to allow multiplexing a given number of cryogenic detectors with only a fraction of frequency encoding resonators. Similar to conventional microwave SQUID multiplexing, our multiplexer relies on inductively coupling non-hysteretic, unshunted rf-SQUIDs to superconducting microwave resonators as well as applying flux ramp modulation for output signal linearization. However, instead of utilizing one resonator per SQUID, we couple multiple SQUIDs to a common readout resonator and encode the…
Dielectric measurements on insulating materials at cryogenic temperatures can be challenging, depending on the frequency and temperature ranges of interest. We present a technique to study the dielectric properties of bulk dielectrics at GHz frequencies. A superconducting coplanar Nb resonator is deposited directly on the material of interest, and this resonator is then probed in distant-flip-chip geometry with a microwave feedline on a separate chip. Evaluating several harmonics of the resonator gives access to various probing frequencies, in the present studies up to 20 GHz. We demonstrate t…
We introduce an improved microwave calibration method for use in a cryogenic environment, based on a traditional three-standard calibration, the Thru-Reflect-Line (TRL) calibration. The modified calibration method takes advantage of additional information from multiple measurements of an ensemble of realizations of a superconducting resonator, as a new pseudo-Open standard, to correct errors in the TRL calibration. We also demonstrate an experimental realization of this in-situ broadband cryogenic calibration system utilizing cryogenic switches. All calibration measurements are done in the sam…
The staggered quantum walk model on a graph is defined by an evolution operator that is the product of local operators related to two or more independent graph tessellations. A graph tessellation is a partition of the set of nodes that respects the neighborhood relation. Flip-flop coined quantum walks with the Hadamard or Grover coins can be expressed as staggered quantum walks by converting the coin degree of freedom into extra nodes in the graph. We propose an implementation of the staggered model with superconducting microwave resonators, where the required local operations are provided by …
The in-place growth of suspended carbon nanotubes facilitates the observation of both unperturbed electronic transport spectra and high-Q vibrational modes. For complex structures integrating, e.g., superconducting rf elements on-chip, selection of a chemically and physically resistant material that survives the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process provides a challenge. We demonstrate the implementation of molybdenum-rhenium coplanar waveguide resonators that exhibit clear resonant behaviour at cryogenic temperatures even after having been exposed to nanotube growth conditions. The properti…
We report on the on-chip detection of microwaves in the frequency range around 100GHz. For the purpose of detection, we employ a discrete transport channel triggered in a superconducting single-electron transistor by photon-assisted tunneling of quasiparticles. The technique is successfully applied to observe the spectrum of the dressed states of a model cQED system consisting of a superconducting coplanar resonator coupled to a quantum Josephson oscillator. The dressed states appear as typical resonance anticrossing exhibiting, in our case, an expectedly wide frequency splitting corresponding…
We study the metastable response of a highly hysteretic DC-SQUID made of a Niobium loop interrupted by two nano-bridges. We excite the SQUID with an alternating current and with direct magnetic flux, and find different stability zones forming diamond-like structures in the measured voltage across the SQUID. When such a SQUID is embedded in a transmission line resonator similar diamond structures are observed in the reflection pattern of the resonator. We have calculated the DC-SQUID stability diagram in the plane of the exciting control parameters, both analytically and numerically. In additio…
We report on the design and performance of a cryogenic (300 mK) near-field scanning microwave microscope. It uses a microwave resonator as the near-field sensor, operating at a frequency of 6 GHz and microwave probing amplitudes down to 100 uV, approaching low enough photon population (N~1000) of the resonator such that coherent quantum manipulation becomes feasible. The resonator is made out of a miniaturized distributed fractal superconducting circuit that is integrated with the probing tip, micromachined to be compact enough such that it can be mounted directly on a quartz tuning-fork, and …
Large-scale arrays of Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) are attractive candidates for use in imaging instruments for next generation submillimeter-wave telescopes such as CCAT. We have designed and fabricated tightly packed ~250-pixel MKID arrays using lumped-element resonators etched from a thin layer of superconducting TiNx deposited on a silicon substrate. The high pixel packing density in our initial design resulted in large microwave crosstalk due to electromagnetic coupling between the resonators. Our second design eliminates this problem by adding a grounding shield and usi…
Nonequilibrium quasiparticles represent a significant source of decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits. Here we investigate the mechanism of quasiparticle poisoning in devices subjected to local quasiparticle injection. We find that quasiparticle poisoning is dominated by the propagation of pair-breaking phonons across the chip. We characterize the energy dependence of the timescale for quasiparticle poisoning. Finally, we observe that incorporation of extensive normal metal quasiparticle traps leads to a more than order of magnitude reduction in quasiparticle loss for a given injecte…
We describe an experimental protocol to characterize magnetic field dependent microwave losses in superconducting niobium microstrip resonators. Our approach provides a unified view that covers two well-known magnetic field dependent loss mechanisms: quasiparticle generation and vortex motion. We find that quasiparticle generation is the dominant loss mechanism for parallel magnetic fields. For perpendicular fields, the dominant loss mechanism is vortex motion or switches from quasiparticle generation to vortex motion, depending on cooling procedures. In particular, we introduce a plot of the …
We present a systematic study of the effects of shielding on the internal quality factors (Qi) of Al and TiN microwave resonators designed for use in quantum coherent circuits. Measurements were performed in an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator, where typical magnetic fields of 200 μT are present at the unshielded sample stage. Radiation shielding consisted of 100 mK and 500 mK Cu cans coated with infrared absorbing epoxy. Magnetic shields consisted of Cryoperm 10 and Sn plating of the Cu cans. A 2.7 K radiation can and coaxial thermalization filters were present in all measurements. TiN …
Quantum entanglement, one of the defining features of quantum mechanics, has been demonstrated in a variety of nonlinear spin-like systems. Quantum entanglement in linear systems has proven significantly more challenging, as the intrinsic energy level degeneracy associated with linearity makes quantum control more difficult. Here we demonstrate the quantum entanglement of photon states in two independent linear microwave resonators, creating N-photon NOON states as a benchmark demonstration. We use a superconducting quantum circuit that includes Josephson qubits to control and measure the two …
Coupled superconducting transmission line resonators have applications in quantum information processing and fundamental quantum mechanics. A particular example is the realization of fast beam splitters, which however is hampered by two-mode squeezer terms. Here, we experimentally study superconducting microstrip resonators which are coupled over one third of their length. By varying the position of this coupling region we can tune the strength of the two-mode squeezer coupling from 2.4% to 12.9% of the resonance frequency of 5.44GHz. Nevertheless, the beam splitter coupling rate for maximally…
We present an experimental approach for cryogenic dielectric measurements on ultra-thin insulating films. Based on a coplanar microwave waveguide design we implement superconducting quarter-wave resonators with inductive coupling, which allows us to determine the real part $\varepsilon_1$ of the dielectric function at GHz frequencies and for sample thicknesses down to a few nm. We perform simulations to optimize resonator coupling and sensitivity, and we demonstrate the possibility to quantify $\varepsilon_1$ with a conformal mapping technique in a wide sample-thickness and $\varepsilon_1$-reg…
