Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments and M1 transitions including two-body meson-exchange current (MEC) contributions are reported for A<=7 nuclei. The realistic Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Illinois-2 three-nucleon potentials are used to generate the nuclear wave functions. The two-body meson-exchange operators are constructed to satisfy the continuity equation with the Argonne v18 potential. The MEC contributions increase the A=3,7 isovector magnetic moments by 16% and the A=6,7 M1 transition rates by 17--34%, bringing them into very good agreement with the experimental data.
We propose the (gamma,p) reaction as a means of producing possible quasi-bound states of omega mesons in nuclei. We use an effective Lagrangian, based on chiral SU(3) symmetry and vector meson dominance, in order to construct the omega-nuclear potential. The contribution of bound omega states is observable in the missing energy spectra of protons emitted in forward direction for several nuclei.
Density dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock theory has been extended to describe properties of exotic nuclei. The effects of Fock exchange terms and of pi - and rho - meson contributions are discussed. These effects are found to be more important for neutron rich nuclei than for nuclei near the valley of stability.
The structure and the energy spectrum of the $η^{\prime}$ mesonic nuclei are investigated in a relativistic mean field theory. One expects a substantial attraction for the $η^{\prime}$ meson in finite nuclei due to the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in the nuclear medium. Such a hadronic scale interaction for the $η^{\prime}$ mesonic nuclei may provide modification of the nuclear structure. The relativistic mean field theory is a self-contained model for finite nuclei which provides the saturation property within the model, and is good to investigate the structure change of the nucleus…
Developed earlier concept of quasielastic knock out of pions from nucleons by high-energy electrons is propounded as a tool for checking microscopical model ($^3P_0$ - fluctuation) for decay of N to different channels $π+B$ and Preparata model of nucleus structure.
Decays of $Λ$ in nuclei, nonmesonic mode, are studied by using the $ΛN \to NN$ weak transition potential derived from the meson exchange mechanism and the direct quark mechanism. The decay rates are calculated both for the $Λ$ in symmetric nuclear matter and light hypernuclei. We consider the exchange of six mesons ($π, K, η, ρ, ω, K^\ast$). The form factor in the meson exchange mechanism and short range correlation are carefully studied.
We study coherent and incoherent phi-meson photoproduction from nuclei. The available data are analyzed in terms of single and coupled channel photoproduction. It is found that the data on coherent photoproduction can be well reproduced within a single channel optical model and show only little room for omega-phi mixing. These data indicate a normal distortion of the phi-meson in nuclei, which is compatible with the results obtained through the vector meson dominance model. The data on incoherent phi-meson photoproduction show an anomalous A-dependence resulting in a very strong phi-meson dist…
Deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for finite nuclei are carried out. As residual interaction, a Brueckner G-matrix derived from a meson-exchange potential is taken. Phenomenological medium modifications of the meson masses are introduced. The binding energies, radii, and deformation parameters of the Carbon, Oxygen, Neon, and Magnesium isotope chains are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.
We present a selection of the first results obtained in a comprehensive calculation of ground state properties of even-even superheavy nuclei in the region of 96 < Z < 136 and 118 < N < 320 from the Quark-Meson-Coupling model (QMC). Ground state binding energies, the neutron and proton number dependence of quadrupole deformations and Q$_α$ values are reported for even-even nuclei with 100 < Z < 136 and compared with available experimental data and predictions of macro-microscopic models. Predictions of properties of nuclei, including Q$_α$ values, relevant for planning future experiments are p…
Recent topics on mesons in nuclei are discussed by especially emphasizing the role of the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in the nuclear medium. The spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in vacuum is considered to be incompletely restored in finite nuclear density systems with moderate reduction of the magnitude of the quark condensate. On the partial restoration of chiral symmetry, the wave function renormalization is important to be taken into account for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We also discuss the possible change of the meson properties in the nuclear medium and meson-nucleus syst…
In this letter we study the high energy behavior of the forward differential cross section for the $^{18}O(π^+,π^-)^{18}Ne$ double charge exchange reaction. We have evaluated the sequential and the meson exchange current mechanisms. The meson exchange current contribution shows a very weak energy dependence and becomes relevant at incident pion kinetic energies above 600 MeV.
After some short introductory remarks on particular issues on the vector mesons in nuclei, in this paper we present a short review of recent developments concerning the interaction of vector mesons with baryons and with nuclei from a modern perspective using the local hidden gauge formalism for the interaction of vector mesons. We present results for the vector baryon interaction and in particular for the resonances which appear as composite states, dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons, taking also the mixing of these states with pseudoscalars and baryons in…
The coherent $ω$-meson photoproduction from nuclei is proposed as a phenomenological method to evaluate the momentum dependence of $ω$-meson mass shift and width in nuclear matter. We analyze available data on un-separated coherent and incoherent $ω$-meson photoproduction from nuclei and extract the imaginary part of the the complex forward $ω{N}$ scattering amplitude, which is proportional to the in-medium $ω$-meson width. The accuracy of the currently available data is not sufficient to evaluate the real part of forward $ω{N}$ scattering amplitude and reconstruct the momentum dependence of t…
A microscopic few-body description of near-threshold coherent photoproduction of the eta meson on tritium and 3He targets is given. The photoproduction cross-section is calculated using the Finite Rank Approximation (FRA) of the nuclear Hamiltonian. The results indicate a strong final state interaction of the eta meson with the residual nucleus. Sensitivity of the results to the choice of the eta N T-matrix is investigated.
Photoproduction of $η$-mesons off deuteron is studied within the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas formalism for different parameters of $ηN$ interaction. The calculations revealed peaks in the energy dependence of the total cross-section.
The optical potential approach for low-energy scattering of $η$-mesons on three-body nuclei is compared to an exact treatment of the $η3N$ system using four-body scattering theory with separable interactions in s-waves only. The higher-order terms including the interaction of the struck nucleon with the surrounding nuclear medium and virtual target excitations in between successive $η$-scatterings are found to cause important corrections. Effects of final state interaction in $η$-photoproduction on $^3$H and $^3$He are also studied and sizable contributions beyond the optical model approach ar…
Three versions of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model are applied to describe properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei. The models differ in the treatment of the bag constant and in terms of nonlinear scalar self-interactions. As a consequence opposite predictions for the medium modifications of the internal nucleon structure arise. After calibrating the model parameters at equilibrium nuclear matter density, binding energies, charge radii, single-particle spectra and density distributions of spherical nuclei are analyzed and compared with QHD calculations. For the models which predict …
The relativistic mean-field effective interaction with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings DD-ME1 is tested in the calculation of deformed nuclei. Ground-state properties of six isotopic chains ($60\le Z \le 70$) in the region of rare-earth nuclei are calculated by using the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model with the DD-ME1 mean-field interaction, and with the Gogny D1S force for the pairing interaction. Results of fully self-consistent RHB calculations for the total binding energies, charge isotope shifts and quadrupole deformation parameters are compared with the available em…
Recent theoretical developments of hadrons in nuclei are briefly reviewed in the aspect of chiral symmetry in nuclei. We show a general sum rule connecting in-medium hadronic quantities and quark condensate, emphasizing that both pionic mode and particle-hole excitations in the nuclear medium are responsible for reduction of the chiral condensate in nuclear matter. We also discuss that few-body nuclear systems with kaons are good objects to investigate basic features of kaon-nucleus interactions, showing recent understandings of the structure of Lambda(1405) and possible bound states of KbarNN…
Shell effects in nuclei about the stability line are investigated within the framework of the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) theory with self-consistent finite-range pairing. Using 2-neutron separation energies of Ni and Sn isotopes, the role of $σ$- and $ω$-meson couplings on the shell effects in nuclei is examined. It is observed that the existing successful nuclear forces (Lagrangian parameter sets) based upon the nonlinear scalar coupling of $σ$-meson exhibit shell effects which are stronger than suggested by the experimental data. We have introduced nonlinear vector self-coupling o…
Two-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials are derived where either one or both nucleons contains a pair vertex. Physically, the meson-pair vertices are meant to describe in an effective way (part of) the effects of heavy-meson exchange and meson-nucleon resonances. {}From the point of view of ``duality,'' these two kinds of contribution are roughly equivalent. The various possibilities for meson pairs coupling to the nucleon are inspired by the chiral-invariant phenomenological Lagrangians that have appeared in the literature. The coupling constants are fixed using the linear $σ$ model. We…
In the framework of the nuclear spectral function approach for incoherent primary proton-nucleon and secondary pion-nucleon production processes we study the inclusive $ϕ$ meson production in the interaction of 2.83 GeV protons with nuclei. In particular, the A- and momentum-dependences of the absolute and relative phi meson yields are investigated within the different scenarios for its in-medium width. Our model calculations take into account the acceptance window of the ANKE facility used in a recent experiment performed at COSY. They show that the pion-nucleon production channel contributes…
The Nijmegen soft-core model for the pseudoscalar-meson baryon interaction is derived, analogous to the Nijmegen NN and YN models. The interaction Hamiltonians are defined and the resulting amplitudes for one-meson-exchange and one-baryon-exchange in momentum space are given for the general mass case. The partial wave projection is carried through and explicit expressions for the momentum space partial wave meson-baryon potentials are presented.
The contribution of the tensor meson $K_2^*(1430)$ exchange in the process $γp\to K^+Λ(Σ^0)$ is investigated within the Regge framework. Inclusion of the $K_2^*$ exchange in the $K(494)+K^*(892)$ exchanges with the coupling constants chosen from the SU(3) symmetry leads to a better description of the production mechanism without referring to any fitting procedure. This shows the significance of the role of the tensor meson exchange to have the Regge theory basically free of parameters with the SU(3) symmetry a good approximation for the meson-baryon couplings.
The energy transfer spectra have been calculated for the coherent $η$ meson production in the proton nucleus reaction. The elementary reaction occurring in the nucleus is considered as $ pN \to pN^*(1535) $; $ N^*(1535) \to Nη$. The $N^*(1535)$ excitation for the forward going proton and $η$ meson is occurred due to the $π^0$ and $η$ meson exchange interactions, other mesons do not contribute in this process. The cross sections are calculated for the $π^0$ and $η$ meson exchange interactions, and the effect of their interference on the cross section is also studied. The initial and final state…
Modifications to the nucleon electric polarizability induced by pion and sigma exchange in the q-q potentials are studied by means of sum rule techniques within a non-relativistic quark model. Contributions from meson exchange interactions are found to be small and in general reduce the quark core polarizability for a number of hybrid and one-boson-exchange q-q models. These results can be explained by the constraints that the baryonic spectrum impose on the short range behavior of the mesonic interactions.
Recent developments in the relativistic nuclear field theory (RNFT) are reviewed. Based on the covariant meson-nucleon Lagrangian of quantum hadrodynamics, RNFT connects consistently the high-energy scale of heavy mesons, medium-energy range of pion and the low-energy domain of emergent collective vibrations (phonons) in a parameter-free way. Mesons and phonons build up the effective interaction in various channels, in particular, the phonon-exchange part takes care of the retardation effects, which are of great importance for the fragmentation of single-particle states, spreading of collectiv…
A theoretical analysis of the $(π^-,γγ)$ reaction in nuclei is made in order to find the viability of this reaction to test modifications of the $σ$ meson mass in nuclear matter. The $ππ$ correlation in the scalar-isoscalar channel in nuclear matter could, in principle, manifest itself in this reaction since it plays an important role in the $ππ\toγγ$ mechanism. But we conclude that this effect is hardly visible in this reaction due to the strong background of the pion-Bremsstrahlung terms. Only with some special cuts and for some polarization states are the effect visible at the cost of a str…
Traditionally isospin violation (charge symmetry breaking and charge dependence) has been modeled by the exchange of mesons between two nucleons. Sources of isospin violation in these models include meson mass differences, meson mixing (of pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons) and isospin violating couplings of mesons with nucleons. I will review the calculated results of this theoretical approach and the NN data on isospin violation.
We investigate the $ϕ$ meson nuclear transparency using some recent theoretical developments on the $ϕ$ in medium self-energy. The inclusion of direct resonant $ϕN$-scattering and the kaon decay mechanisms leads to a $ϕ$ width much larger than in most previous theoretical approaches. The model has been confronted with photoproduction data from CLAS and LEPS and the recent proton induced $ϕ$ production from COSY finding an overall good agreement. The results support the need of a quite large direct $ϕN$-scattering contribution to the self-energy.
Short range meson-exchange mechanisms such as $ρ\toωπ^0$ contribute significantly to the amplitude for $pp\rightarrow ppπ^0$ near threshold in addition to pion rescattering. The uncertainty of the latter contribution, which depends on poorly determined parameters, is estimated. Allowing for this uncertainty and taking the short range meson-exchange contributions into account makes it possible to reproduce the measured cross section.
We present a new model for the hyperon-nucleon (Lambda N, Sigma N) interaction, derived within the meson exchange framework. The model incorporates the standard one boson exchange contributions of the lowest pseudoscalar and vector meson multiplets with coupling constants fixed by SU(6) symmetry relations. In addition - as the main feature of the new model - the exchange of two correlated pions or kaons, both in the scalar-isoscalar (sigma) and vector-isovector (rho) channels, is included.
Relativistic effects and the role of heavy meson exchange in deuteron photodisintegration are studied systematically for photon energies below the pion production threshold. In a (p/M)-expansion, all leading order relativistic one-body and pi-exchange as well as all static heavy meson exchange currents consistent with the Bonn OBEPQ model are included. In addition, one- and two-body boost effects have been investigated. Sizeable effects from the various two-body contributions beyond pi-exchange have been found in almost every observable considered, i.e., differential cross section and single p…
This is the contribution to the proceedings of the MENU 2010 conference. The recent work of Ref. [7] is summarized. Elastic piN scattering and the reaction pi^+ p --> K^+ Sigma^+ are described simultaneously in a unitary coupled-channels approach which respects analyticity. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate the t- and u- channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. The pole structure of the amplitudes is extracted from the analytic cont…
Pion-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials are derived for two nucleons in the intermediate states. The mesons we include are (i) pseudoscalar mesons: $π, η, η'$; (ii) vector mesons: $ρ, ω, ϕ$; (iii) scalar mesons: $a_{0}(980), \varepsilon(760), f_{0}(975)$; and (iv) the $J=0$ contribution from the Pomeron. Strong dynamical pair suppression is assumed, and at the nucleon-nucleon-meson vertices Gaussian form factors are incorporated into the relativistic two-body framework using a dispersion representation for the pion- and meson-exchange amplitudes. The Fourier transformations are performe…
Back in the mid eighties, a new branch of investigation which was related to the interaction of eta mesons with nuclei came into existence. It started with the theoretical prediction of possible exotic states of eta mesons and nuclei bound by the strong interaction and later developed into an extensive experimental program to search for such unstable states as well as understand the underlying interaction via eta meson producing reactions. The vast literature of experimental as well as theoretical works which studied various aspects of eta producing reactions such as the $π^+$ $n$ $\to ηp$, $p…
We show theoretical results for $(γ, π^0 π^0)$ production on nucleons and nuclei in the kinematical region where the scalar isoscalar $ππ$ amplitude is influenced by the $σ$ pole. The final state interaction of the pions modified by the nuclear medium produces a spectacular shift of strength of the two pion invariant mass distribution induced by the moving of the $σ$ pole to lower masses and widths as the nuclear density increases.
Through a quantitative comparative study of the properties of deuteron and nucleon-nucleon interaction with chiral quark model and quark delocalization color screening model. We show that the $σ$-meson exchange used in the chiral quark model can be replaced by quark delocalization and color screening mechanism.
A relativistic non-local model for the inclusive photoproduction of $η$ mesons from complex nuclei is introduced. The model is based on the dominance of the S$_{11}$(1535) resonance. We compare the results of our calculations with the available data on inclusive cross sections for the nuclei C, Al and Cu. Assuming the resonance propagates freely in the nuclear medium, we find that the calculated angular distribution and energy dependence of the cross sections reproduce the data in a reasonable fashion. The present non-local model allows the inclusion of density dependent mass and width in the …
We take an approach to the Lambda non-mesonic weak decay in nuclei based on the exchange of mesons. The one pion and one kaon exchange are considered, together with the exchange of two pions, either correlated, leading to an important scalar-isoscalar exchange (sigma-like exchange), or uncorrelated (box diagrams). Extra effects of omega exchange in the scalar-isoscalar channel are also considered. Constraints of chiral dynamics are used to generate these exchanges. A drastic reduction of the OPE results for the Gamma_n/Gamma_p ratio is obtained and the new results are compatible with all prese…
We study the $A$ dependence of the $ϕ$ meson production cross section in proton nucleus reactios at energies just above threshold, which are accessible in an experimental facility like COSY. This $A$ dependence has two sources: the distortion of the incident proton and the absorption of the $ϕ$ in its way out of the nucleus. This second process reduces the cross section in about a factor two in heavy nuclei. Thus we show that the $A$ dependence of the cross section contains valuable information on the $ϕ$ width in the nuclear medium.
The contribution of Pauli exchange terms to the two--nucleon induced non--mesonic weak decay of $^{12}_Λ$C hypernuclei, $ΛNN\to nNN$ ($N=n$ or $p$), is studied within a nuclear matter formalism implemented in a local density approximation. We have adopted a weak transition potential including the exchange of the complete octets of pseudoscalar and vector mesons as well as a residual strong interaction modeled on the Bonn potential. The introduction of exchange terms turns out to reduce the two--nucleon induced non--mesonic rate by 18% and, jointly with an increase in the one--nucleon induced r…
We perform calculations for the production of $ϕ$ mesons in nuclei at energies just above threshold and study the $A$ dependence of the cross section. We use results for the $ϕ$ selfenergy in the medium obtained within a chiral unitary approach. We find a strong $A$ dependence which is tied to the distortion of the incident proton and to the absorption of the $ϕ$ in its way out of the nucleus. The effect of this latter process reduces the cross section in about a factor two in heavy nuclei proving that the $A$ dependence of the cross section bears valuable information on the $ϕ$ width in the n…
Properties of multi-antikaonic nuclei (MKN), where several numbers of $K^-$ mesons are bound, are studied in the relativistic mean-field model, combined with chiral dynamics for kaonic part of the thermodynamic potential. The density profiles for nucleons and $K^-$ mesons, the single particle energy of the $K^-$ mesons, and binding energy of the MKN are obtained. The effects of the $\bar K-\bar K$ interactions on these quantities are discussed in comparison with other meson ($σ$, $ω$, and $ρ$)-exchange models. It is shown that the $\bar K-\bar K$ interactions originate from two contributions: …
We have calculated the total cross section for k^+-4^He, 16^O, 40^Ca, intes at incident momenta of the kaon P_lab<1GeV . We derived the K^+-nucleon optical potential according to the exchange of 3- mesons (segma, roh, omega) and also for 4- (segma, roh, omega, segma_0) exchanged between the reactants. We showed both of the radial behavior of the real and the imaginary parts of the derived potential. Comparisons between the available experimental data, other theoretical work and the calculated total cross sections for the three studied nuclei which have shown a reasonable agreement. The extended fo…
The production of mesons in nucleon-nucleon collisions is reviewed from the viewpoint of the meson-exchange picture. In the first part various possible production mechanisms and their relative importance are discussed. In addition, general features of meson production are described. In the second part special emphasis is put on pion production. Implications of chiral perturbation theory are discussed. Results based on a specific meson-exchange model for pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions are presented. The model is utilized to calculate several spin-dependent observables of the reac…
We study eta meson properties in the infinite nuclear matter and in atomic nuclei with an emphasis on effects of the eta coupling to N*(1535)--nucleon-hole modes. The N*(1535) resonance, which dominates the low-energy eta-nucleon scattering, can be seen as a chiral partner of the nucleon. The change of the chiral mass gap between the N* and the nucleon in a nuclear medium has an impact on the properties of the eta-nucleus system. If the N*-nucleon mass gap decreases with a density increase (chiral symmetry restoration) the calculations show the existence of the resonance state at the energy ab…
The K^+ scattering on the lightest nuclei, d, 3He and 4He is studied in the framework of multiple scattering theory. Effects from MEC tied to the K^+N-->KNpi reaction are evaluated. We found that at momentum transfers Q^2<0.5 (GeV/c)^2 contributions from MEC are much smaller than kaon rescattering corrections. This makes the conventional multiple scattering picture a reliable tool to study these reactions in this kinematical domain and to extract the K^+n scattering amplitude from the K^+d data. At larger transferred momentum MEC can become more relevant.
The feasibility to study the in-medium properties of the omega meson in photon induced reactions on nuclei is investigated by means of a semiclassical transport model. The calculations are dedicated to an experiment presently being analyzed by the TAPS/Crystal Barrel collaborations. A full coupled-channel treatment of final state interactions allows a quantitative analysis of the influence of absorption and elastic scattering of the produced hadrons and likewise the application of kinematic cuts on the observables. Within the scope of our calculations, the preliminary data by the TAPS/Crystal …
We update our previous results for the nonmesonic decay of $^{12}_Λ$C and $^5_Λ$He. We pay special attention to the role played by Final State Intreractions on the decay observables. We follow a One-Meson-Exchange model which includes the exchange of the $π, ρ, K, K^*, η$ and $ω$ mesons. We also present recent predictions for different observables concerning the decay of the doubly strange $^6_{ΛΛ}$He hypernucleus.
The non-mesonic weak decay of $Λ$--hypernuclei is studied within a one-meson-exchange potential supplemented by a chirally motivated two-pion-exchange mechanism. The effects of final state interactions on the outgoing nucleons are also taken into account. In view of the severe discrepancies between theoretical expectations and experimental data, particular attention is payed to the asymmetry of the protons emitted by polarized hypernuclei. The one-meson-exchange model describes the non-mesonic rates and the neutron-to-proton ratio satisfactorily but predicts a too large and negative asymmetry …
We discuss the photoproduction of omega- and rho0-mesons off protons in the particular channel where the target proton is excited to a Roper resonance N*(1440). We propose a simple meson-exchange model for these processes in order to evaluate their cross sections near threshold and at low momentum transfers. It is suggested in particular that the differential cross section for the associated photoproduction of a rho0-meson and a Roper resonance in these kinematic conditions could provide direct information on the strength of the scalar-isoscalar excitation of the N*(1440) and hence on the magn…
