Recent results from the NA48/1 and NA48/2 experiments at the CERN SPS are presented. NA48/2 carried out data taking in 2003 and 2004 collecting charged kaon decays: branching ratios and form factors have been measured for the rare K+- to pi+-e+e-, K+- to pi+-gammagamma and K+- to pi+-e+e-gamma decays. The NA48/1 experiment has taken data in 2002 using only the Ks beam at an increased intensity measuring neutral hyperon radiative decays. Using this data, which exceeds present statistics by about one order of magnitude, a new precise measurement of the Csi_0 decay asymmetries has been obtained.
Some Kaons and Hyperons rare decays branching ratios and form factors were measured by the NA48 experiment at CERN. The details of the measurements and their importance for the understanding of the CKM quark mixing matrix are discussed.
New results from the NA48 experiment on kaon and hyperon decays relevant to |V_us| are reported here. For charged kaons we present measurements of BR(K+- -> pi0 e+- nu) and BR(K+- -> pi0 mu+- nu). On neutral kaon decays we report the measurements of BR(K_L -> pi+ pi-) and of K_L -> pi+- mu-+ nu form factors slopes. For hyperons we present results on the BR(Xi0 -> Sigma+ e- nu_e).
The NA48 Collaboration has obtained several new results on kaon and neutral hyperon decays. For hyperons we present new, very precise measurements on the Xi0 lifetime and the decay asymmetries of Xi0 -> Lamda gamma and Xi0 -> Sigma0 gamma. On kaon decays, we report on the first observation of the interference term between Inner Bremsstrahlung and Direct Emission in K+- -> pi+- pi0 gamma and on a new, accurate measurement of the form factor slopes in the semileptonic decay KL -> pi+- mu-+ nu.
We entertain the possibility that scalar leptoquarks (LQs) generate consequential effects on the strangeness-changing decays of hyperons and kaons involving missing energy carried away by a pair of invisible fermions. Although such processes have suppressed rates in the standard model (SM), they could get significant enhancement in the presence of the LQs. In order to respect the available data on the kaon modes $K\toπν\barν$ and increase the rates of the hyperon decays substantially at the same time, two different scalar LQs are needed. If the LQs have Yukawa couplings solely to SM fermions, …
The Fermilab HyperCP collaboration is making precision studies of charged hyperon and kaon decays, as well as searches for rare and forbidden hyperon and kaon decays. We report here on measurements of the branching ratios of the flavor-changing neutral-current decays: K+/- -> pi+/- mu+ mu-, and compare our results to theoretical predictions. This is the first observation of the K- -> pi- mu+ mu- decay.
We review a novel model-independent approach to the analysis of new-physics effects in the $s\to u\ell^-\barν$ transitions. We apply it to (semi)leptonic kaon decays and study their complementarity with pion and hyperon $β$ decays or with collider searches of new physics.
The HyperCP experiment (Fermilab E871) was designed to search for rare phenomena in the decays of charged strange particles, in particular CP violation in $Ξ$ and $Λ$ hyperon decays with a sensitivity of $10^{-4}$. Intense charged secondary beams were produced by 800 GeV/c protons and momentum-selected by a magnetic channel. Decay products were detected in a large-acceptance, high-rate magnetic spectrometer using multiwire proportional chambers, trigger hodoscopes, a hadronic calorimeter, and a muon-detection system. Nearly identical acceptances and efficiencies for hyperons and antihyperons d…

Key Laboratory of Nuclear Physics and Ion-beam Application (MOE), Fudan University(核物理与离子束应用教育部重点实验室,复旦大学)
From an analysis of the current world averages of the charged kaon and tau to kaon branching fractions, we derive, within the framework of type II Higgs doublets models such as the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model, $\tanβ/m_H < 0.21$ GeV$^{-1}$ at a 90% confidence limit.
We investigate the potential of rare hyperon decays to probe the short distance structure in the $s\to dν\barν$ and $s\to d\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions. Hyperon decays into neutrinos ($B_1\to B_2ν\barν$) can be reliably predicted by using form factors determined in baryon chiral perturbation theory. Their decay rates are sensitive to different short-distance operators, as compared to their kaon counterparts, and the corresponding branching fractions are in the range of $10^{-14}\sim10^{-13}$ in the standard model. In the context of the low-energy effective theory, we find that the anticipated BES…
A search for direct CP violation in the non-leptonic decays of hyperons has been performed. In comparing the product of the decay parameters, $α_Ξα_Λ$, in terms of an asymmetry parameter, $A_{ΞΛ}$, between hyperons and anti-hyperons in the charged $Ξ\to Λπ$ and $Λ\to p π$ decay sequence, we found no evidence of direct CP violations. The parameter $A_{ΞΛ}$ was measured to be $0.012 \pm 0.014$.
In the recent years many new measurements of the decay of the neutral Xi0 hyperon have been reported both by the NA48/1 and the KTeV collaboration. The results are based on data samples of more than 2 billion Xi0 decays. In this report new measurements of the Xi0 lifetime, decay asymmetries, and semileptonic decay rates are presented. The latter allow the extraction of the CKM matrix element |V_us|, complementary to kaon decays.
Bose-Einstein correlations of charged and neutral kaons have been measured in e+-p deep inelastic scattering with an integrated luminosity of 121 pb-1 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The two-particle correlation function was studied as a function of the four-momentum difference of the kaon pairs, Q_12=sqrt{-(p_1-p_2)^2}, assuming a Gaussian shape for the particle source. The values of the radius of the production volume, r, and of the correlation strength, lambda, were obtained for both neutral and charged kaons. The radii for charged and neutral kaons are similar and are consistent with thos…
This paper summarizes some recent progress and future perspectives in the experimental investigation of the Standard Model (and physics beyond it) using charged kaon decays, except for the important mode K+ -> pi+ nu nubar discussed in detail in other contributions to this workshop.
Using 20.7 pb^-1 of e+e- annihilation data taken at sqrt{s} = 3.671 GeV with the CLEO-c detector, precision measurements of the electromagnetic form factors of the charged pion, charged kaon, and proton have been made for timelike momentum transfers of |Q^2| = 13.48 GeV^2 by the reaction e+e- -> h+h-. The measurements are the first ever with identified pions and kaons of |Q^2| > 4 GeV^2, with the results |F_pi(13.48 GeV^2)| = 0.075 +- 0.008(stat) +- 0.005(syst) and |F_K(13.48 GeV^2)| = 0.063 +- 0.004(stat) +- 0.001(syst). The result for the proton, assuming |G^p_E| = |G^p_M|, is |G^p_M(13.48 G…
The strange quark helicity distribution Delta s(x)is derived at LO from the semi-inclusive and inclusive spin asymmetries measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The significance of the results is found to depend critically on the ratio of the sbar and u quark fragmentation functions into positive kaons.
A measurement of the form factors of charged kaon semileptonic decays is presented, based on $4.4 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to π^0 e^\pm ν_e$ ($K^\pm_{e3}$) and $2.3 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to π^0 μ^\pm ν_μ$ ($K^\pm_{\mu3}$) decays collected in 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment. The results are obtained with improved precision as compared to earlier measurements. The combination of measurements in the $K^\pm_{e3}$ and $K^\pm_{\mu3}$ modes is also presented.
We consider the strangeness-changing decays of hyperons into another baryon and missing energy which is carried away by a pair of invisible spinless bosons. Pursuing a model-independent approach and taking into account constraints from the kaon sector, we find that these hyperon modes can have large rates, especially if the bosons have parity-odd effective couplings to light quarks. In that case the rates could attain values which are well within the expected reach of the currently running BESIII experiment. Since the branching fractions of hyperon decays with missing energy are tiny in the st…
A precision measurement of the ratio RK of the rates of kaon leptonic decays K+- --> e nu and K+- --> mu nu with the full data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007-2008 is reported. The result, obtained by analysing ~150000 reconstructed K+- --> e nu candidates with 11% background contamination, is RK = (2.488+-0.010)*10^{-5}, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.
Spectra of identified charged hadrons are measured in pp collisions at the LHC for sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV. Charged pions, kaons, and protons in the transverse-momentum range pt approximately 0.1-1.7 GeV and for rapidities abs(y) < 1 are identified via their energy loss in the CMS silicon tracker. The average pt increases rapidly with the mass of the hadron and the event charged-particle multiplicity, independently of the center-of-mass energy. The fully corrected pt spectra and integrated yields are compared to various tunes of the PYTHIA6 and PYTHIA8 event generators.
New data on the production of charged kaons in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The kaons are identified by energy loss in a large TPC tracking system. Inclusive invariant cross sections are obtained in intervals from 0 to 1.7 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from 0 to 0.5 in Feynman x. Using these data as a reference, a new evaluation of the energy dependence of kaon production, including neutral kaons, is conducted over a range from 3 GeV to p+anti-p collider…
That massless dark photons could exist and have flavor-changing magnetic-dipole interactions with down-type light quarks is an attractive possibility which may be realized in various new-physics scenarios. It is potentially testable not only in kaon processes but also via two-body hyperon decays involving missing energy carried away by the massless dark photon. We explore the latter within a simplified model approach and take into account constraints from the kaon sector. We find that the branching fractions of some of these hyperon modes are allowed to be as high as a few times $10^{-4}$. Suc…
Bose-Einstein correlations in pairs of charged kaons produced in a sample of 3.9 million hadronic Z0 decays have been measured with the OPAL experiment at LEP. Charged kaons were identified in the central tracking detector using their specific energy loss in the drift chamber gas. The correlation function was studied in two-jet events using a double ratio, formed by the number of like-sign pairs normalised by a reference sample in the data, divided by the same ratio in a Monte Carlo simulation. The enhancement at small values of the four-momentum difference of the pair was parametrised using a…
A review of recent precision measurements of the electromagnetic form factors of the mesons, pion and kaon, and the hyperons, $Λ^0$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^+$, $Ξ^-$, $Ξ^0$, $Ω^-$, at large timelike momentum transfers is presented. Evidence is found for diquark correlations in $Λ^0$, $Σ^0$ hyperons.
The momentum and helicity density distributions of the strange quark sea in the nucleon are obtained in leading order from charged-kaon production in deep-inelastic scattering on the deuteron. The distributions are extracted from spin-averaged K+/- multiplicities, and from K+/- and inclusive double-spin asymmetries for scattering of polarized positrons by a polarized deuterium target. The shape of the momentum distribution is softer than that of the average of the ubar and dbar quarks. In the region of measurement 0.02 < x < 0.6 and Q^2 > 1.0 GeV^2, the helicity distribution is zero within exp…
This paper is devoted to the measurement of the fully inclusive absolute branching ratios of the charged kaon semileptonic decays, $K^{\pm}\toπ^0e^\pmν(γ)$ and $K^\pm \to π^0μ^\pmν(γ)$. The measurements have been done using a tag technique, employing the two-body decays, $K^\pm \to μ^\pmν$ and $K^\pm \to π^\pmπ^0$, and using a sample of about 410 pb$^{-1}$ collected during the 2001 and 2002 data taking of the KLOE experiment at Daphne, the Frascati $ϕ$-factory. The results obtained are BR(K$^\pm_{e3}$) = $0.04965 (38)_{Stat} (37)_{Syst}$ and BR(K$^\pm_{\mu3}$) = $0.03233 (29)_{Stat} (26)_{Syst…
The ratio of the leptonic charged kaon decays $R_K= Γ(K^{\pm} \to e^{\pm}ν) / Γ(K^{\pm} \to μ^{\pm}ν)$ is sensitive to the structure of the week interactions and can be precisely calculated within the Standard Model. Presence of New Physics can introduce a shift on its value of the order of a percent. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS used data from a dedicated run in 2007 to perform a measurement of this ratio and probe the lepton universality. The data analysis technique and the final results are presented.
We report a new measurement of A_b using data obtained by SLD in 1997-98. This measurement uses a vertex tag technique, where the selection of a b hemisphere is based on the reconstructed mass of the bottom hadron decay vertex. The method uses the 3D vertexing capabilities of SLD's CCD vertex detector and the small and stable SLC beams to obtain a high b-event tagging efficiency and purity of 78% and 97%, respectively. Charged kaons identified by the CRID detector provide an efficient quark-antiquark tag, with the analyzing power calibrated from the data. We obtain a preliminary result of A_b …
We explore kaon decays with missing energy carried away by a massless dark photon, $\barγ$, assumed to have flavor-changing dipole-type couplings to the $d$ and $s$ quarks. We consider in particular the neutral-kaon modes $K_L\toγ\barγ$ and $K_L\toπ^0γ\barγ$ and their $K_S$ counterparts, as well as the charged-kaon channel $K^+\toπ^+γ\barγ$, each of which also has an ordinary photon, $γ$, in the final state. In addition, we look at $K_{L,S}\toπ^+π^-\barγ$ and $K^+\toπ^+π^0\barγ$. Interestingly, the same $ds\barγ$ interactions give rise to the flavor-changing two-body decays of hyperons with mi…
We report the results of the measurement of T-violating transverse muon polarization in the decays K^+ --> pi^0 mu^+ nu and K^+ --> mu^+ nu gamma performed in the experiment E246 at KEK. Preliminary results obtained for the entire data set taken in the period 1996-2000 are consistent with no T-violation in both decays.
The CKM collaboration is proposing to measure the branching ratio of the rare K decay (K+ --> pi+ nu nubar) at the Main Injector at Fermilab. Our goal is to be able to observe about 100 events, for a Standard Model branching ratio of about 1.0E-10. This implies that we must be able to reduce the background to a few events.
Searches for experimental manifestations of CP violation have born much fruit in recent years with the discovery of direct CP violation and the first evidence of CP violation outside of the neutral kaon system. Nevertheless we still know little about CP violation: its origin remains a mystery and there is little hard evidence that it is the sole province of the standard model. Searches for CP violation in hyperon decays offer promising possibilities as they are sensitive to certain beyond-the-standard-model sources that are not probed in other systems. We report on the status of such searches,…
From an analysis of the ionisation energy loss of charged particles selected from 110326 e+e- -> tau+tau- candidates recorded by the OPAL detector at e+e- centre-of-mass energies near the Z0 resonance, we determine the one-prong tau decay branching ratios: Br(tau- -> nu_tau K- >=0h0) = 1.528 +- 0.039 +- 0.040 % Br(tau- -> nu_tau K-) = 0.658 +- 0.024 +- 0.029 % where the h0 notation refers to a pi0, an eta, a K^0_S, or a K^0_L, and where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.
Using a sample of 4.7/fb integrated luminosity accumulated with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we have measured the branching fractions of the tau lepton into $K^- h^+ π^- ν_τ$ and $K^- K^+ π^- ν_τ$ relative to $h^- h^+ h^- ν_τ; K^- h^+ π^- π^0ν_τ$ and $K^- K^+ π^- π^0ν_τ$ relative to $h^- h^+ h^- π^0 ν_τ$. The relative branching fractions are: (5.16+-0.20+-0.50)*$10^{-2}$, (1.52+-0.14+-0.29)*$10^{-2}$, (2.54+-0.44+-0.39)*$10^{-2}$ and $<0.0154$ at 95% C.L., respectively. Coupled with additional experimental information, we use our results to extract informat…
We present preliminary results of a search for charmless two-body B decays to charged pions and kaons using data collected by the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center's PEP-II storage ring. In a sample of 8.8 million produced B-anti-B pairs we measure the branching fractions B(B^0 --> pi^+pi^-) = (9.3^{+2.6}_{-2.3}^{+1.2}_{-1.4}) x 10^{-6} and B(B^0 --> K^+π^-) = (12.5^{+3.0}_{-2.6}^{+1.3}_{-1.7}) x 10^{-6}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. For the decay B^0 --> K^+K^- we find no significant signal and set an upper limit of B(B^0 --> …
Future kaon decay programs at BNL and FNAL are discussed. The primary focus of these programs is the measurement of the golden modes, the neutral and charged kaon decays to a pion and two neutrinos. The observation of the charged mode by E787 at BNL is the first step in a series of measurements which will completely determine the unitarity triangle within the kaon system.
Modification of neutron and proton driplines by the capture of strange hyperon(s) by normal nuclei has been investigated. A generalised mass formula (BWMH) based on the strangeness dependent extended liquid drop model is used to calculate the binding energy of normal nuclei as well as strange hypernuclei. The neutron (Sn) and proton (Sp) separation energies of all hypernuclei with neutral hyperons Lambda, double Lambda or charged hyperons Cascade(-), Theta(+) inside are calculated using BWMH mass formula. The normal neutron and proton driplines get modified due to the addition of the hyperon(s…
Studies of lepton-flavor violation in strangeness-changing ($|ΔS|=1$) transitions have a~long tradition in the kaon sector where they provide some of the strongest limits on physics beyond the standard model. Recent hints of violation of lepton-flavor universality in $B$-meson decays have revived interest in lepton-flavor violation as the two phenomena appear simultaneously in many extensions of the standard model. At the same time, the LHCb experiment has produced new results for the hyperon process $Σ^+\to pμ^+μ^-$ and may be in a position to study other rare hyperon decay modes. With this i…
Spin polarization and entanglement are utilized by the BESIII experiment to learn more about the production and decay properties of hyperon-antihyperon pairs in a series of recent analyses of its unprecedented datasets at the $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ resonances. This has lead to the observation of significant transverse polarisation in decays of $J/ψ$ or $ψ'$ into $Λ\barΛ$, $Σ\barΣ$, $Ξ\barΞ$, and $Ω\barΩ$. Because of the non-zero polarization, the decay parameters for the most common hadronic weak decays of both hyperons and antihyperons could be determined independently for the first time. Comparing t…
First full next-to-leading order analytical results in Chiral Perturbation Theory for the charged Kaon K -> 3 pi slope g and decay rates CP-violating asymmetries are presented. We discuss the constraints that a measurement of these asymmetries would impose on the Standard Model calculations of epsilon_K' and the kind of information it can provide on Im G_8, Im (e^2 G_E) and higher order weak couplings.
The production of bound kaon-nucleon-states (kaonic-cluster) in the reaction $p+p\to [ppK^{-}] + K^{+}$ should be investigated in a dedicated measurement at the FOPI detector system at the SIS-accelerator of GSI, by looking for the decay $ppK^{-} \to p + Λ\to p + p + π^{-}$. To select the final states, the detector system Si$Λ$ViO has been build up as a trigger for $Λ$-Hyperons. This detector consists of two layers of segmented silicon-strip-detectors, which are able to measure online the particle multiplicity. These two layers are arranged such, that most of the $Λ$-Hyperons will decay betwee…
We present the first measurement of event-by-event fluctuations in the kaon sector in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt {s_{\rm NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The robust fluctuation correlator $ν_{\rm dyn}$ is used to evaluate the magnitude of fluctuations of the relative yields of neutral and charged kaons, as well as the relative yields of charged kaons, as a function of collision centrality and selected kinematic ranges. While the correlator $ν_{\rm dyn}[\rm K^+,\rm K^-]$ exhibits a scaling approximately in inverse proportion of the charged particle multiplicity, $ν_{\rm dyn}[…
The lifetime of the Lambda-hyperon for the nonmesonic decay Lambda N ---> N N has been determined by a measurement at COSY Juelich of the delayed fission of heavy hypernuclei produced in proton - Au collisions at T_p=1.9 GeV. It is found that heavy hypernuclei with mass numbers A= 180 +- 5 and atomic numbers Z= 74 +-2 fission with a lifetime 130ps +- 13ps (stat.) +- 15ps (syst.) . This value together with the results obtained for other heavy hypernuclei in previous investigations indicates (on the confidence level of 0.9) a violation of the phenomenological Delta I = 1/2 rule for Lambda N --->…
Spectra of identified charged hadrons are measured in pPb collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at sqrt(sNN) = 5.02 TeV. Charged pions, kaons, and protons in the transverse-momentum range pt approximately 0.1-1.7 GeV and laboratory rapidity abs(y) < 1 are identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker. The average pt increases with particle mass and the charged multiplicity of the event. The increase of the average pt with charged multiplicity is greater for heavier hadrons. Comparisons to Monte Carlo event generators reveal that EPOS LHC, which incorporates additional hydrodyna…
Correlations of two charged identical kaons (${\rm K}^{\rm ch}{\rm K}^{\rm ch}$) are measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$~TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). One-dimensional ${\rm K}^{\rm ch}{\rm K}^{\rm ch}$ correlation functions are constructed in three multiplicity and four transverse momentum ranges. The ${\rm K}^{\rm ch}{\rm K}^{\rm ch}$ femtoscopic source parameters $R$ and $λ$ are extracted. The ${\rm K}^{\rm ch}{\rm K}^{\rm ch}$ correlations show a slight increase of femtoscopic radii with increasing multiplicity and a slight decrease of radii with incr…
We give the first full next-to-leading order analytical results in Chiral Perturbation Theory for the charged Kaon K \to 3 pi slope g and decay rates CP-violating asymmetries. We have included the dominant Final State Interactions at NLO analytically and discussed the importance of the unknown counterterms. We find that the uncertainty due to them is reasonable just for Δg_C, i.e. the asymmetry in the K^+ \to pi^+ pi^+ pi^- slope g; we get Δg_C = -(2.4 +- 1.2) 10^{-5}. The rest of the asymmetries are very sensitive to the unknown counterterms. In particular, the decay rate asymmetries can chan…
We investigate the results of the charged kaon multiplicities off the deuteron target from HERMES and COMPASS experiments. The discrepancy of the two data sets cannot be explained by different $Q^2$ values. Furthermore we examine the empirical parametrization of the fragmentation functions, DSS2017, and find that the agreement between the theoretical predictions and the HERMES data is less satisfactory as claimed.
With the aim of achieving a better and more complete understanding of neutrino interactions with nuclear targets, the coherent production of charged kaons induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos is investigated in the energy range of some of the current neutrino experiments. We follow a microscopic approach which, at the nucleon level, incorporates the most important mechanisms allowed by the chiral symmetry breaking pattern of QCD. The distortion of the outgoing (anti)kaon is taken into account by solving the Klein-Gordon equation with realistic optical potentials. Angular and momentum distrib…
We explore the strangeness-changing decays of the lightest hyperons into another baryon plus missing energy within and beyond the standard model (SM). In the SM these processes arise from the loop-induced quark transition $s\to dν\barν$ and their branching fractions are estimated to be less than $10^{-11}$. In the presence of new physics (NP) the rates of these hyperon decays with missing energy could increase significantly with respect to the SM expectations because of modifications to the SM process or contributions from additional modes with new invisible particles. Adopting a model-indepen…
Observed since the 1950's, the seasonal effect on underground muons is a well studied phenomenon. The interaction height of incident cosmic rays changes as the temperature of the atmosphere changes, which affects the production height of mesons (mostly pions and kaons). The decay of these mesons produces muons that can be detected underground. The production of muons is dominated by pion decay, and previous work did not include the effect of kaons. In this work, the methods of Barrett and MACRO are extended to include the effect of kaons. These efforts give rise to a new method to measure the …
