We associate a graph $\mathcal{C}_G$ to a non locally cyclic group $G$ (called the non-cyclic graph of $G$) as follows: take $G\backslash Cyc(G)$ as vertex set, where $Cyc(G)=\{x\in G | < x,y> \text{is cyclic for all} y\in G\}$ is called the cyclicizer of $G$, and join two vertices if they do not generate a cyclic subgroup.
For a simple graph $Γ$, $w(Γ)$ denotes the clique number of $Γ$, which is the maximum size (if it exists) of a complete subgraph of $Γ$. In this paper we characterize groups whose non-cyclic graphs have clique numbers at most 4. We prove that a non-cyclic group $G$ is solvable whenever $w(\mathcal{C}_G)<31$ and the equality for a non-solvable group $G$ holds if and only if $G/Cyc(G)\cong A_5$ or $S_5$.
We show that among all finite groups of any given order, the cyclic group of that order has the maximum number of edges in its power graph. Contains corrections to published version.
We associate a graph $Γ_G$ to a non locally cyclic group $G$ (called the non-cyclic graph of $G$) as follows: take $G\backslash Cyc(G)$ as vertex set, where $Cyc(G)=\{x\in G | \left<x,y\right> \text{is cyclic for all} y\in G\}$, and join two vertices if they do not generate a cyclic subgroup. We study the properties of this graph and we establish some graph theoretical properties (such as regularity) of this graph in terms of the group ones. We prove that the clique number of $Γ_G$ is finite if and only if $Γ_G$ has no infinite clique. We prove that if $G$ is a finite nilpotent group and $H$ i…
We prove that the generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups of exceptional type obey two different cyclic sieving phenomena, as conjectured by Armstrong, respectively by Bessis and Reiner. This manuscript accompanies the paper "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type" [arXiv:1001.0028], for which it provides the computational details.
We present the proof of the cyclic sieving conjectures for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups due to Armstrong, respectively to Bessis and Reiner, for the 26 exceptional well-generated complex reflection groups. The computational details are provided in the manuscript "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type - the details" [arXiv:1001.0030].
The cyclic graph of a group $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the nonidentity elements of $G$ and whose edges connect distinct elements $x$ and $y$ if and only if the subgroup $\langle x,y\rangle$ is cyclic. We obtain information about the cyclic graph of $2$-Frobenius groups. The cyclic graph of a $2$-Frobenius group is disconnected. In this paper, we determine the number of connected components of the cyclic graph of any $2$-Frobenius group.
A Cayley graph on a group $G$ has a natural edge-colouring. We say that such a graph is CCA if every automorphism of the graph that preserves this edge-colouring is an element of the normaliser of the regular representation of $G$. A group $G$ is then said to be CCA if every Cayley graph on $G$ is CCA. Our main result is a characterisation of non-CCA graphs on groups that are Sylow cyclic and whose order is not divisible by four. We also provide several new constructions of non-CCA graphs.
Let $G$ be a finite non-cyclic group. The non-cyclic graph $Γ_G$ of $G$ is the graph whose vertex set is $G\setminus Cyc(G)$, two distinct vertices being adjacent if they do not generate a cyclic subgroup, where $Cyc(G)=\{a\in G: \langle a,b\rangle\ \text{is cyclic for each } b\in G\}$. In this paper, we classify all finite non-cyclic groups $G$ such that $Γ_G$ has (non)orientable genus one.
We classify those 2-groups G which factorise as a product of two disjoint cyclic subgroups A and B, transposed by an automorphism of order 2. The case where G is metacyclic having been dealt with elsewhere, we show that for each e>2 there are exactly three such non-metacyclic groups G with $|A|=|B|=2^e$, and for e=2 there is one. These groups appear in a classification by Berkovich and Janko of 2-groups with one non-metacyclic maximal subgroup; we enumerate these groups, give simpler presentations for them, and determine their automorphism groups.
Let $G$ be a group. \textit{The permutability graph of cyclic subgroups of $G$}, denoted by $Γ_c(G)$, is a graph with all the proper cyclic subgroups of $G$ as its vertices and two distinct vertices in $Γ_c(G)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding subgroups permute in $G$. In this paper, we classify the finite groups whose permutability graph of cyclic subgroups belongs to one of the following: bipartite, tree, star graph, triangle-free, complete bipartite, $P_n$, $C_n$, $K_4$, $K_{1,3}$-free, unicyclic. We classify abelian groups whose permutability graph of cyclic subgroups are plan…
In this note, we show that among finite nilpotent groups of a given order or finite groups of a given odd order, the cyclic group of that order has the minimum number of edges in its cyclic subgroup graph. We also conjecture that this holds for arbitrary finite groups.
The cyclic shift graph of a monoid is the graph whose vertices are elements of the monoid and whose edges link elements that differ by a cyclic shift. For certain monoids connected with combinatorics, such as the plactic monoid (the monoid of Young tableaux) and the sylvester monoid (the monoid of binary search trees), connected components consist of elements that have the same evaluation (that is, contain the same number of each generating symbol). This paper discusses new results on the diameters of connected components of the cyclic shift graphs of the finite-rank analogues of these monoids…
The cyclic shift graph of a monoid is the graph whose vertices are elements of the monoid and whose edges link elements that differ by a cyclic shift. This paper examines the cyclic shift graphs of `plactic-like' monoids, whose elements can be viewed as combinatorial objects of some type: aside from the plactic monoid itself (the monoid of Young tableaux), examples include the hypoplactic monoid (quasi-ribbon tableaux), the sylvester monoid (binary search trees), the stalactic monoid (stalactic tableaux), the taiga monoid (binary search trees with multiplicities), and the Baxter monoid (pairs …
We show that certain graphs of groups with cyclic edge groups are aTmenable. In particular, this holds when each vertex group is either virtually special or acts properly and semisimply on $\mathbb{H}^n$.
We prove that the property of being cyclic subgroup separable, that is having all cyclic subgroups closed in the profinite topology, is preserved under forming graph products. Furthermore, we develop the tools to study the analogous question in the pro-$p$ case. For a wide class of groups we show that the relevant cyclic subgroups - which are called $p$-isolated - are closed in the pro-$p$ topology of the graph product. In particular, we show that every $p$-isolated cyclic subgroup of a right-angled Artin group is closed in the pro-$p$ topology, and we fully characterise such subgroups.
Let $G$ be a group. The intersection graph of cyclic subgroups of $G$, denoted by $\mathscr I_c(G)$, is a graph having all the proper cyclic subgroups of $G$ as its vertices and two distinct vertices in $\mathscr I_c(G)$ are adjacent if and only if their intersection is non-trivial. In this paper, we classify the finite groups whose intersection graph of cyclic subgroups is one of totally disconnected, complete, star, path, cycle. We show that for a given finite group $G$, $girth(\mathscr I_c (G)) \in \{3, \infty\}$. Moreover, we classify all finite non-cyclic abelian groups whose intersection…
Let $G$ be a finite group. Define a graph on the set $G^{\#} = G \setminus \{ 1 \}$ by declaring distinct elements $x,y\in G^{\#}$ to be adjacent if and only if $\langle x,y\rangle$ is cyclic. Denote this graph by $Δ(G)$. The graph $Δ(G)$ has appeared in the literature under the names cyclic graph and deleted enhanced power graph. If $G$ and $H$ are nontrivial groups, then $Δ(G\times H)$ is completely characterized. In particular, if $Δ(G\times H)$ is connected, then a diameter bound is obtained, along with an example meeting this bound. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions for the discon…
We prove that any isometry of the graph of cyclic splittings of a finitely generated free group $F_N$ of rank $N\ge 3$ is induced by an outer automorphism of $F_N$. The same statement also applies to the graphs of maximally-cyclic splittings, and of very small splittings.
The cyclic graph $Γ(S)$ of a semigroup $S$ is the simple graph whose vertex set is $S$ and two vertices $x, y$ are adjacent if the subsemigroup generated by $x$ and $y$ is monogenic. In this paper, we classify the semigroup $S$ such that whose cyclic graph $Γ(S)$ is complete, bipartite, tree, regular and a null graph, respectively. Further, we determine the clique number of $Γ(S)$ for an arbitrary semigroup $S$. We obtain the independence number of $Γ(S)$ if $S$ is a finite monogenic semigroup. At the final part of this paper, we give bounds for independence number of $Γ(S)$ if $S$ is a semigr…
Here we study some algebraic properties of non-cyclic graphs. In this paper we show that $\overlineΓ_G$ is isomorphic to $K_3\cup (n-4)K_1$ or $K_4\cup (n-5)K_1$ if and only if $G$ is isomorphic to $D_8$ or $D_{10}$, respectively. We characterize all groups of order $n$ like $G$ in which $γ(Γ_G)+γ(\overlineΓ_G)\in \{n, n-1, n-2, n-3\}$, where $|Cyc(G)|=1$.
We define analogues of the graphs of free splittings, of cyclic splittings, and of maximally-cyclic splittings of $F_N$ for free products of groups, and show their hyperbolicity. Given a countable group $G$ which splits as $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$, where $F$ denotes a finitely generated free group, we identify the Gromov boundary of the graph of relative cyclic splittings with the space of equivalence classes of $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. A tree is \emph{$\mathcal{Z}$-averse} if it is not compatible with any tree $T'$, that is itself comp…
For a simple connected graph $ G $ of order $ n $, the normalized Laplacian is a square matrix of order $ n $, defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)= D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}L(G)D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, where $ D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}} $ is the diagonal matrix whose $ i$-th diagonal entry is $ \frac{1}{\sqrt{d_{i}}} $. In this article, we find the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of the joined union of regular graphs in terms of the adjacency eigenvalues and the eigenvalues of quotient matrix associated with graph $ G $. For a finite group $\mathcal{G}$, the power graph $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{G})$ of a group $ \mathca…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the fundamental group of a finite graph of groups with infinite cyclic edge groups to be acylindrically hyperbolic, from which it follows that a finitely generated group splitting over Z cannot be simple. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition (when the vertex groups are torsion free) for the fundamental group to be balanced, where a group is said to be balanced if $x^m$ conjugate to $x^n$ implies that $|m|=|n|$ for all infinite order elements $x$.
A cyclic presentation of a group is a presentation with an equal number of generators and relators that admits a particular cyclic symmetry. We characterise the orientable, non-orientable, and redundant cyclic presentations and obtain concise refinements of these presentations. We show that the Tits alternative holds for the class of groups defined by redundant cyclic presentations and that if the number of generators of the cyclic presentation is greater than two then the corresponding group is large. Generalizing and extending earlier results of the authors we describe the star graphs of ori…
Groups defined by presentations for which the components of the corresponding star graph are the incidence graphs of generalized polygons are of interest as they are small cancellation groups that - via results of Edjvet and Vdovina - are fundamental groups of polyhedra with the generalized polygons as links and so act on Euclidean or hyperbolic buildings; in the hyperbolic case the groups are SQ-universal. A cyclic presentation of a group is a presentation with an equal number of generators and relators that admits a particular cyclic symmetry. We obtain a classification of the non-redundant …
We study a class of Labelled Oriented Graph (LOG) group where the underlying graph is a tadpole graph. We show that such a group is the natural HNN extension of a cyclically presented group and investigate the relationship between the LOG group and the cyclically presented group. We relate the second homotopy groups of their presentations and show that hyperbolicity of the cyclically presented group implies solvability of the conjugacy problem for the LOG group. In the case where the label on the tail of the LOG spells a positive word in the vertices in the circuit we show that the LOGs and gr…
Consider a one-ended word-hyperbolic group. If it is the fundamental group of a graph of free groups with cyclic edge groups then either it is the fundamental group of a surface or it contains a finitely generated one-ended subgroup of infinite index. As a corollary, the same holds for limit groups. We also obtain a characterisation of surfaces with boundary among free groups equipped with peripheral structures.
We use results concerning the Smith forms of circulant matrices to identify when cyclically presented groups have free abelianisation and so can be Labelled Oriented Graph (LOG) groups. We generalize a theorem of Odoni and Cremona to show that for a fixed defining word, whose corresponding representer polynomial has an irreducible factor that is not cyclotomic and not equal to $\pm t$, there are at most finitely many $n$ for which the corresponding $n$-generator cyclically presented group has free abelianisation. We classify when Campbell and Robertson's generalized Fibonacci groups $H(r,n,s)$…
We prove that the fundamental group of a finite graph of convergence groups with parabolic edge groups is a convergence group. Using this result, under some mild assumptions, we prove a combination theorem for a graph of convergence groups with dynamically quasi-convex edge groups (Theorem 1.3). To prove these results, we use a modification of Dahmani's technique [Dah03]. Then we show that the fundamental group of a graph of relatively hyperbolic groups with edge groups either parabolic or infinite cyclic is relatively hyperbolic and construct Bowditch boundary. Finally, we show that the homeo…
