Tuning of tunneling current noise spectra singularities by localized states charging

We report the results of theoretical investigations of tunneling current noise spectra in a wide range of applied bias voltage. Localized states of individual impurity atoms play an important role in tunneling current noise formation. It was found that switching "on" and "off" of Coulomb interaction of conduction electrons with two charged localized states results in power law singularity of low-frequency tunneling current noise spectrum ($1/f^α$) and also results on high frequency component of tunneling current spectra (singular peaks appear).

Electronic Decoupling of Polyacenes from the Underlying Metal Substrate by sp3 Carbon Atoms

We report on the effect of sp3 hybridized carbon atoms in acene derivatives adsorbed on metal surfaces, namely decoupling the molecules from the supporting substrates. In particular, we have used a Ag(100) substrate and hydrogenated heptacene molecules, in which the longest conjugated segment determining its frontier molecular orbitals amounts to five consecutive rings. Detection of Single Electron Charging in an Individual InAs Quantum Dot by Noncontact Atomic Force Microscopy

Single electron charging in an individual InAs quantum dot was observed by electrostatic force measurements with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The resonant frequency shift and the dissipated energy of an oscillating AFM cantilever were measured as a function of the tip-back electrode voltage and the resulting spectra show distinct jumps when the tip was positioned above the dot. Addition spectra of quantum dots: The role of dielectric mismatch

Using atomistic pseudopotential wave functions we calculate the electron and hole charging energies of InAs quantum dots. We find that the charging energies depend strongly on the dielectric constant epsilon_out of the surrounding material, and that when the latter is smaller than the dielectric constant of the dot the electron-electron and hole-hole interactions are dominated by surface-polarization effects. Pair tunneling through single molecules

By a polaronic energy shift, the effective charging energy of molecules can become negative, favoring ground states with even numbers of electrons. Here, we show that charge transport through such molecules near ground-state degeneracies is dominated by tunneling of electron pairs which coexists with (featureless) single-electron cotunneling. Electronic states in finite graphene nanoribbons: Effect of charging and defects

We study the electronic structure of finite armchair graphene nanoribbons using density-functional theory and the Hubbard model, concentrating on the states localized at the zigzag termini. We show that the energy gaps between end-localized states are sensitive to doping, and that in doped systems, the gap between the end-localized states decreases exponentially as a function of the ribbon length. Doping also quenches the antiferromagnetic coupling between the end-localized states leading to a spin-split gap in neutral ribbons. Electric field inversion asymmetry: Rashba and Stark effects for holes in resonant tunneling devices

We report experimental evidence of excitonic spin-splitting, in addition to the conventional Zeeman effect, produced by a combination of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, Stark shift and charge screening. The electric-field-induced modulation of the spin-splitting are studied during the charging and discharging processes of p-type GaAs/AlAs double barrier resonant tunneling diodes (RTD) under applied bias and magnetic field. The abrupt changes in the photoluminescence, with the applied bias, provide information of the charge accumulation effects on the device.

Observation of Tunneling Current in Semiconducting Graphene p-n Junctions

We demonstrate a tunneling and rectification behavior in bilayer graphene. A stepped dielectric top gate creates a spatially modulated electric field, which opens the band gap in the graphene and produces an insulating region at the p-n interface. A current-voltage relationship exhibiting differential resistance peak at forward bias stems from the tunneling current through the insulating region at the p-n interface. Mechanism for nuclear and electron spin excitation by radio frequency current

Recent radio frequency scanning tunneling spectroscopy (rf-STS) experiments have demonstrated nuclear and electron spin excitations up to $\pm12\hbar$ in a single molecular spin quantum dot (qudot).
