We demonstrate a tunneling and rectification behavior in bilayer graphene. A stepped dielectric top gate creates a spatially modulated electric field, which opens the band gap in the graphene and produces an insulating region at the p-n interface. A current-voltage relationship exhibiting differential resistance peak at forward bias stems from the tunneling current through the insulating region at the p-n interface. The tunneling current reflects singularities in the density of states modified by the electric field. This work suggests that the effect of carrier charge tuning by external electric field in 2D semiconductors is analogously to that by impurity doping in 3D semiconductors.
A model is presented for $pn$ junction formation near metal-semiconductor contacts in two-dimensional semiconducting systems such as graphene. Carrier type switching occurs in a region near the metal-semiconductor junction when energy band bending leads to a crossing between the junction Fermi level and the Dirac energy. A bias-dependent depletion region occurs due to the minimization of carrier density, which is shown to act as an additional parasitic resistance in devices. The $pn$ junction resistance is demonstrated by its implementation in a transfer length structure.
The conditions necessary for a nanotube junction connecting a metallic and semiconducting nanotube to rectify the current are theoretically investigated. A tight binding model is used for the analysis, which includes the Hartree-Fock approximation and the Green's function method. It is found that the junction has a behavior similar to the backward diode if the gate electrode is located nearby and the Fermi level of the semiconducting tube is near the gap. Such a junction would be advantageous since the required length for the rectification could be reduced.
We propose a new orbital controlled model to explain the gate field induced switching of current in a semiconducting PbS-nanowire junction. A single particle scattering formalism in conjunction with a posteriori density functional approach involving hybrid functional is used to study the electronic current; both first and higher order Stark effects are explicitly treated in our model. Our calculation reveals that after a threshold gate-voltage, orbital mixing produces p-components at the S atoms in the participating orbitals. This results in an inter-layer orbital interaction that allows elect…
This paper extends the modern theory of tunneling transport to finite temperatures. The extension enables applications to molecular electronic devices connected to semiconducting leads. The paper presents an application of the theory to molecular devices made of alkyl chains connected to silicon nano-wires, mapping their transport characteristics as functions of temperature and alkyl chain's length. Based on these calculations and on the analytic theory, it is found that the tunneling decay constant is determined not by the Fermi level, but by the edge of the valence or conductance band, which…
The electronic transport properties of an SNS junction formed by an InN nanowire (N) and Al contacts (S) with a superconducting transition temperature T_c ~ 0.92 K were investigated. As a function of dc bias, superconducting quasiparticle transport resonance peaks at E=2Δwere observed, in agreement with BCS theory with 2Δ(T=0) \equiv Δ_0=275\mueV. Several additional transport resonances scaling linearly in energy were observed at high-bias above 2Δ, up to E\simeq 15Δ_0, consistent with McMillan-Rowell oscillations. The persistence of McMillan-Rowell oscillations at high-bias and under applied …
Spin dependent single electron tunneling in ferromagnetic double junctions is analysed theoretically in the limit of sequential tunneling. The influence of discrete energy spectrum of the central electrode (island)on the spin accumulation, spin fluctuations and tunnel magnetoresistance is analysed numerically in the case of a nonmagnetic island. It is shown that spin fluctuations are significant in magnetic as well as in nonmagnetic junctions.
We theoretically investigate two different magnetic tunneling junctions (MTJs) with semiconductor barriers, CuInSe${}_{2}$ (CIS) and CuGaSe${}_{2}$ (CGS), which are the terminal compounds of recently reported mixed semiconductor barrier, CuIn${}_{1-x}$Ga$_{\it x}$Se${}_{2}$. To discuss the transport properties of these systems, we analyze complex band structures, magnetoresistance (MR) ratios, and resistance-area products ($RA$) by using first-principles based calculations in combination with the Landauer formula. It is found that the $Δ_{1}$ wave functions have dominant contributions to the s…
Usually, graphene is used in its horizontal directions to design novel concept devices. Here, we report a single electron tunneling diode based on quantum tunneling through a vertical graphene two-barrier junction. The junction is formed by positioning a scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) tip above a graphene nanoribbon that was deposited on a graphite surface. Because of the asymmetry of the two-barrier junction, the electrons can unidirectional transfer from the tip to the graphene nanoribbon but not from the graphene to the tip. This result opens intriguing opportunities for designing new…
We investigate tunneling in metal-insulator-metal junctions employing few atomic layers of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as the insulating barrier. While the low-bias tunnel resistance increases nearly exponentially with barrier thickness, subtle features are seen in the current-voltage curves, indicating marked influence of the intrinsic defects present in the hBN insulator on the tunneling transport. In particular, single electron charging events are observed, which are more evident in thicker-barrier devices where direct tunneling is substantially low. Furthermore, we find that annealing th…
The effects of the spin-orbit interaction on the tunneling magnetoresistance of ferromagnet/semiconductor/normal metal tunnel junctions are investigated. Analytical expressions for the tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) are derived within an approximation in which the dependence of the magnetoresistance on the magnetization orientation in the ferromagnet originates from the interference between Bychkov-Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings that appear at junction interfaces and in the tunneling region. We also investigate the transport properties of ferromagnet/semiconductor/…
We study the tunneling magneto thermopower and tunneling magneto thermocurrent of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ). The devices show a clear change of the thermoelectric properties upon reversal of the magnetisation of the CoFeB layers from parallel to the antiparallel orientation. When switching from parallel to antiparallel the thermopower increases by up to 55% where as the thermocurrent drops by 45%. These observations can be well explained by the Onsager relations taking into account the tunneling magneto resistance of the MTJ. These findings contrast previous studies on Al…
We study the zero temperature conductance and magnetoconductance of ballistic \textit{p-n} junctions in Weyl semimetals. Electron transport is mediated by Klein tunneling between \textit{n}- and \textit{p}- regions. The chiral anomaly that is realized in Weyl semimetals plays a crucial role in the magnetoconductance of the junction. With the exception of field orientations where the angle between $\mathbf{B}$ and the junction plane is small, magnetoconductance is positive and linear in $B$ at both weak and strong magnetic fields. In contrast, magnetoconductance in conventional \textit{p-n} jun…
A generalized Green's function theory is developed to simulate the inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) of molecular junctions. It has been applied to a realistic molecular junction with an octanedithiolate embedded between two gold contacts in combination with the hybrid density functional theory calculations. The calculated spectra are in excellent agreement with recent experimental results. Strong temperature dependence of the experimental IETS spectra is also reproduced. It is shown that the IETS is extremely sensitive to the intra-molecular conformation and to the molecule-met…
We present an atomistic self-consistent study of the electronic and transport properties of semiconducting carbon nanotube in contact with metal electrodes of different work functions, which shows simultaneous electron and hole doping inside the nanotube junction through contact-induced charge transfer. We find that the band lineup in the nanotube bulk region is determined by the effective work function difference between the nanotube channel and source/drain electrodes, while electron transmission through the SWNT junction is affected by the local band structure modulation at the two metal-na…
We propose and analize a graphene tunneling transit time device based on a heterostructure with a lateral p-i-n junction electrically induced in the graphene layer by the applied gate voltages of different polarity. The depleted i-section of the graphene layer (between the gates) serves as both the tunneling injector and the transit region. Using the developed device model, we demonstrate that the ballistic transit of electrons and holes generated due to interband tunneling in the i-section results in the negative ac conductance in the terahertz frequency range, so that the device can serve as…
We make a theoretical study of the quantum oscillations of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) as a function of the spacer layer thickness. Such oscillations were recently observed in tunneling junctions with a nonmagnetic metallic spacer at the barrier-electrode interface. It is shown that momentum selection due to the insulating barrier and conduction via quantum well states in the spacer, mediated by diffusive scattering caused by disorder, are essential features required to explain the observed period of oscillation in the TMR ratio and its asymptotic value for thick nonmagnetic spacer.
Zero bias conductance per spin of nanotube double junction (NTDJ) is investigated theoretically using the tight binding model, unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation and non-equilibrium Green's functions. NTDJ consists of two metallic nanotubes joined by a piece of semiconducting nanotube, with the transition between the nanotubes made up of sets of 5 and 7 member carbon rings. A quantum well forms in the central semiconducting NT region, bounded by Schottky barriers. Spin current occurs when Coulomb interactions raise the spin degeneracy of resonant levels in the quantum well. As long as an …
First-principles calculations of electron tunneling transport in Ni and Co break junctions reveal strong dependence of the conductance on the magnetization direction, an effect known as tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR). The origin of this phenomenon stems from resonant states localized in the electrodes near the junction break. The energy and broadening of these states is strongly affected by the magnetization orientation due to spin-orbit coupling, causing TAMR to be sensitive to bias voltage on a scale of a few mV. Our results bear a resemblance to recent experimental data and …
We study tunnel junctions consisting of a two-dimensional ferroelectric (FE) material sandwiched between graphene electrodes. We formulate a theory for the interplay of the FE polarization and induced free charges in such devices, taking into account quantum capacitance effects. We predict a gate-sensitive FE voltage difference across the device, which can be measured using electrostatic force microscopy. Incorporating this electrostatic theory in the tunneling current-voltage characteristics, we identify a resonance peak associated with aligned Dirac cones as a highly sensitive probe of the F…
We investigated spin dependent transport through Fe/GaAs/Fe tunnel junctions. The tunneling magnetoresistance effect (TMR) was probed for different types of Fe/GaAs interfaces. For interfaces cleaned by hydrogen plasma the TMR effect is increased and observable at room temperature. If an epitaxial Fe/GaAs(001) interface is involved, the tunnel junction exhibits a bias dependent inversion of the TMR effect. This is a first experimental signature for band structure effects at a Fe/GaAs interface and relevant for spin injection experiments.
We report the observation of tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance effect (TAMR) in the epitaxial metal-semiconductor system Fe/GaAs/Au. The observed two-fold anisotropy of the resistance can be switched by reversing the bias voltage, suggesting that the effect originates from the interference of the spin-orbit coupling at the interfaces. Corresponding model calculations reproduce the experimental findings very well.
Electronic properties of metal-finite semiconducting carbon nanotube interfaces are studied as a function of the nanotube length using a self-consistent tight-binding theory. We find that the shape of the potential barrier depends on the long-range tail of the charge transfer, leading to an injection barrier thickness comparable to half of the nanotube length until the nanotube reaches the bulk limit. The conductance of the nanotube junction shows a transition from tunneling to thermally-activated transport with increasing nanotube length.
We report resistance versus magnetic field measurements for a La0.65Sr0.35MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.65Sr0.35MnO3 tunnel junction grown by molecular-beam epitaxy, that show a large field window of extremely high tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) at low temperature. Scanning the in-plane applied field orientation through 360^/circ, the TMR shows 4-fold symmetry, i.e. biaxial anisotropy, aligned with the crystalline axes but not the junction geometrical long axis. The TMR reaches ~ 1900% at 4K, corresponding to an interfacial spin polarization of > 95% assuming identical interfaces. These results show that…
Direct and phonon-assisted tunneling currents in InAlGaAs-InGaAs bulk and double quantum well interband tunnel heterojunctions are simulated rigorously using the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism for coherent and dissipative quantum transport in combination with a simple two-band tight-binding model for the electronic structure. A realistic band profile and associated built-in electrostatic field is obtained via self-consistent coupling of the transport formalism to Poisson's equation. The model reproduces experimentally observed features in the current-voltage characteristics of the …
We study the tunneling magneto thermo power (TMTP) in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junction nanopillars. Thermal gradients across the junctions are generated by a micropatterned electric heater line. Thermo power voltages up to a few tens of \muV between the top and bottom contact of the nanopillars are measured which scale linearly with the applied heating power and hence with the applied temperature gradient. The thermo power signal varies by up to 10 \muV upon reversal of the relative magnetic configuration of the two CoFeB layers from parallel to antiparallel. This signal change corresp…
We present a theoretical study of the transport characteristics of molecular junctions, where first-row diatomic molecules are attached to (001) gold and platinum electrodes. We find that the conductance of all of these junctions is of the order of the conductance quantum unit $G_0$, spelling out that they belong to the transparent regime. We further find that the transmission coefficients show wide plateaus as a function of the energy, instead of the usual sharp resonances that signal the molecular levels in the tunneling regime. We use Caroli's model to show that this is a rather generic pro…
The tunneling of electrons and holes in quantum structures plays a crucial role in studying the transport properties of materials and the related devices. 8-Pmmn borophene is a new two-dimensional Dirac material, which hosts tilted Dirac cone and chiral, anisotropic massless Dirac fermions. We develop the transfer matrix method to investigate the Klein tunneling of massless fermions across the smooth NP junctions and NPN junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene. Like the sharp NP junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene, the tilted Dirac cones induce the oblique Klein tunneling. The angle of perfect transmission to…
We study pentanedithiol molecular junctions formed by means of the break-junction technique with a scanning tunneling microscope at low temperatures. Using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, the response of the junction to elastic deformation is examined. We show that this procedure makes a detailed characterization of the molecular junction possible. In particular, our results indicate that tunneling takes place through just a single molecule.

We investigate the role of pseudospin structure of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) in interband tunneling properties in lateral BP junctions. We find that interband tunneling is critically dependent on junction directions because of the anisotropic pseudospin structure of BP. When the armchair direction of BP is normal to the interface, pseudospins of incident and transmitted carriers are nearly aligned so that interband tunneling is highly effective, analogous to the Klein tunneling in graphene. However, when the zigzag direction is normal to the interface, interband tunneling is suppressed b…
We study Josephson junctions made of semiconducting nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, where superconducting correlations are induced by the proximity effect. In the presence of a suitably directed magnetic field, the system displays the anomalous Josephson effect: a nonzero supercurrent in the absence of a phase bias between two superconductors. We show that this anomalous current can be increased significantly by tuning the nanowire into the helical regime. In particular, in a short junction, a large anomalous current is a signature for topologically nontrivial superconductivity in t…
We show that the S/F/S Josephson $φ_0$-junction permits detection of macroscopic quantum tunneling and quantum oscillation of the magnetic moment by measuring the ac voltage across the junction. Exact expression for the tunnel splitting renormalized by the interaction with the superconducting order parameter is obtained. It is demonstrated that magnetic tunneling may become frozen at a sufficiently large $φ_0$. The quality factor of quantum oscillations of the magnetic moment due to finite Ohmic resistance of the junction is computed. It is shown that magnetic tunneling rate in the $φ_0$-junct…
We theoretically investigate the spin--wave spin current induced by the spin Seebeck effect in magnonic spin tunneling junctions (MSTJs) for arbitrary magnetization directions. We show that the MSTJ functions as a \textit{tunable} spin Seebeck diode in which the tunneling spin current can be turned on and off with high efficiency by controlling the magnetization direction.
A multi-level Anderson model is employed to simulate the system of a nanostructure tunnel junction with any number of one-particle energy levels. The tunneling current, including both shell-tunneling and shell-filling cases, is theoretically investigated via the nonequilibrium Green's function method. We obtain a closed form for the spectral function, which is used to analyze the complicated tunneling current spectra of a quantum dot or molecule embedded in a double-barrier junction. We also show that negative differential conductance can be observed in a quantum dot tunnel junction when the C…
The tunneling of quasiparticles (QPs) across Josephson junctions (JJs) detrimentally affects the coherence of superconducting and charge-parity qubits, and is shown to occur more frequently in magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate the parity lifetime to survive in excess of 50$\,\mathrmμ$s in magnetic fields up to 1$\,$T, utilising a semiconducting nanowire transmon to detect QP tunneling in real time. We exploit gate-tunable QP filters and find magnetic-field-enhanced parity lifetimes, consistent with increased QP trapping by the ungated nanowire due to orbital effects. Our findings highlight …
We present electronic transport measurements through thiolated C$_{60}$ molecules in liquid environment. The molecules were placed within a mechanically controllable break junction using a single anchoring group per molecule. When varying the electrode separation of the C$_{60}$-modified junctions, we observed a peak in the conductance traces. The shape of the curves is strongly influenced by the environment of the junction as shown by measurements in two distinct solvents. In the framework of a simple resonant tunneling model, we can extract the electronic tunneling rates governing the transp…
We report the experimental observation of sub-Poissonian shot noise in single magnetic tunnel junctions, indicating the importance of tunneling via impurity levels inside the tunnel barrier. For junctions with weak zero-bias anomaly in conductance, the Fano factor (normalized shot noise) depends on the magnetic configuration being enhanced for antiparallel alignment of the ferromagnetic electrodes. We propose a model of sequential tunneling through nonmagnetic and paramagnetic impurity levels inside the tunnel barrier to qualitatively explain the observations.
We theoretically investigate the angular and spin dependent transport in normal-metal/helical-multiferroic/ferromagnetic heterojunctions. We find a tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) effect due to the spiral magnetic order in the tunnel junction and to an effective spin-orbit coupling induced by the topology of the localized magnetic moments in the multiferroic spacer. The predicted TAMR effect is efficiently controllable by an external electric field due to the magnetoelectric coupling.
Statistics of electron tunneling in normal tunnel junctions is studied analytically and numerically taking into account circuit (environment) effects. Full counting statistics, as well as full statistics of voltage and phase have been found for arbitrary times of observation. The theoretical analysis was based on the classical master equation, whereas the numerical simulations employed standard Monte-Carlo methods.
We have measured the current-voltage characteristics of small-capacitance single Josephson junctions at low temperatures (T < 0.04 K), where the strength of the coupling between the single junction and the electromagnetic environment was controlled with one-dimensional arrays of dc SQUIDs. We have clearly observed Coulomb blockade of Cooper-pair tunneling and even a region of negative differential resistance, when the zero-bias resistance of the SQUID arrays is much higher than the quantum resistance h/e^2 = 26 kohm. The negative differential resistance is evidence of coherent single-Cooper-pa…
We calculate the contribution to the spin transfer torque from sequential tunneling through impurities in a magnetic tunnel junction. For a junction with weakly polarized ferromagnetic contacts, the torque is found to be in the plane spanned by the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic contacts and proportional to $\sin θ$, where $θ$ is the angle between the magnetic moments. If the polarization is larger, the torque acquires a significant out-of-plane component and a different dependence on $θ$.
The paper addresses inelastic spin-flip tunneling accompanied by surface spin excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic junctions. The inelastic tunneling current is proportional to the magnon density of states which is energy-independent for the surface waves and, for this reason, cannot account for the bias-voltage dependence of the observed inelastic tunneling spectra. This paper shows that the bias-voltage dependence of the tunneling spectra can arise from the tunneling matrix elements of the electron-magnon interaction. These matrix elements are derived from the Coulomb exchange interaction …
We study by first-principles calculations a densely packed island of organic molecules (F4TCNQ) adsorbed on graphene. We find that with electron doping the island naturally forms a p-n junction in the graphene sheet. For example, a doping level of ~ 3 * 10^{13} electrons per cm^2 results in a p-n junction with 800 meV electrostatic potential barrier. Unlike in a conventional p-n junction in graphene, in the case of the junction formed by an adsorbed organic molecular island we expect that the Klein tunneling is inhibited, even without an applied external magnetic field. Here Klein tunneling is…
Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) have attracted strong research interest within the last decades due to their potential use as nonvolatile memory such as MRAM as well as for magnetic logic applications. Half-metallic magnets (HMMs) have been suggested as ideal electrode materials for MTJs to achieve an extremely large tunnel-magnetoresistance (TMR) effect. Despite their high TMR ratios, MTJs based on HMMs do not exhibit current rectification, i.e., a diode effect, which was achieved in a magnetic tunnel junction concept based on HMMs and type-II spin-gapless semiconductors (SGSs). The proposed…
Tunneling hetero-junctions (THJs) usually induce confined states at the regions close to the tunnel junction which significantly affect their transport properties. Accurate numerical modeling of such effects requires combining the non-equilibrium coherent quantum transport through tunnel junction, as well as the quasi-equilibrium statistics arising from the strong scattering in the induced quantum wells. In this work, a novel atomistic model is proposed to include both effects: the strong scattering in the regions around THJ and the coherent tunneling. The new model matches reasonably well wit…
The modern understanding of the Josephson effect in mesosopic devices derives from the physics of Andreev bound states, fermionic modes that are localized in a superconducting weak link. Recently, Josephson junctions constructed using semiconducting nanowires have led to the realization of superconducting qubits with gate-tunable Josephson energies. We have used a microwave circuit QED architecture to detect Andreev bound states in such a gate-tunable junction based on an aluminum-proximitized InAs nanowire. We demonstrate coherent manipulation of these bound states, and track the bound-state …
Micrometer-sized Al/AlO$_{x}$/Y tunnel junctions were fabricated by the electron-beam lithography technique. The thin ($\approx$ 1.5--2 nm thickness) insulating AlO$_{x}$ layer was grown on top of the Al base electrode by O$_{2}$ glow discharge. The zero-bias conductances $G(T)$ and the current-voltage characteristics of the junctions were measured in a wide temperature range 1.5--300 K\@. In addition to the direct tunneling conduction mechanism observed in low-$G$ junctions, high-$G$ junctions reveal a distinct charge transport process which manifests the thermally fluctuation-induced tunneli…
The effects of the spin-orbit interaction on the tunneling magnetoresistance of magnetic tunnel junctions are investigated. A model in which the experimentally observed two-fold symmetry of the anisotropic tunneling magnetoresistance (TAMR) originates from the interference between Dresselhaus and Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit couplings is formulated. Bias induced changes of the Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength can result in an inversion of the TAMR. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the TAMR experimentally observed in epitaxial Fe/GaAs/Au tunnel junctions.
We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a normal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) junction of silicene in the thin barrier limit. Similar to graphene the tunneling conductance in such NIS structure exhibits an oscillatory behavior as a function of the strength of the barrier in the insulating region. However, unlike in graphene, the tunneling conductance in silicene can be controlled by an external electric field owing to its buckled structure. We also demonstrate the change in behavior of the tunneling conductance across the NIS junction as we change the chemical potential in t…
We study a circuit where a mesoscopic Josephson junction (JJ) is embedded in an environment consisting of a large bias resistor and a normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction (NIS). The effective Coulomb blockade of the JJ can be controlled by the tunneling current through the NIS junction leading to transistor-like characteristics. We show using phase correlation theory and numerical simulations that substantial current gain with low current noise ($i_{n}\lesssim 1$ fA/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$) and noise temperature ($\lesssim $ 0.1 K) can be achieved. Good agreement between our numerical simu…
We measured the shot noise in the CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB-based magnetic tunneling junctions with a high tunneling magnetoresistance ratio (over 200% at 3 K). Although the Fano factor in the anti-parallel configuration is close to unity, it is observed to be typically 0.91\pm0.01 in the parallel configuration. It indicates the sub-Poissonian process of the electron tunneling in the parallel configuration due to the relevance of the spin-dependent coherent transport in the low bias regime.
The 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene is one kind of new elemental monolayer, which hosts anisotropic and tilted massless Dirac fermions (MDF). The planar \textit{p-n} junction (PNJ) structure as the basic component of various novel devices based on the monolayer material has attracted increasing attention. Here, we analytically study the transport properties of anisotropic and tilted MDF across 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene PNJ. Similar to the isotropic MDF across graphene junctions, perfect transmission exists but its direction departures the normal direction of borophene PNJ induced by the anisotropy a…
We study the electronic transport in a graphene-based superconductor-normal(graphene)-superconductor (SNS) junction by use of the Dirac-Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We consider the properties of tunneling conductance through an undoped strip of graphene with heavily doped superconducting electrodes in the dirty limit. We find that spectrum of Andreev bound states are modified in the presence of single localized defect in the bulk. The minimum tunneling conductance remains the same and this result doesn't depend on the actual location of the imperfection.
We propose tunnel junctions of a Hall bar and a superconducting lead, for observing Cooper-pair tunneling into singlet fractional quantum Hall edge states. These tunnel junctions provide a natural means of extracting precise information of the spin polarization and the filling factor of the state. The low energy regime of one of the set-ups is governed by a novel quantum entangled fixed point.
One of the most promising platforms for one-dimensional topological superconductivity is based on semiconducting nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), where s-wave superconductivity is induced by proximity effect and an external Zeeman field drives the system into the topological superconducting phase with Majorana bound states (MBSs) at the end of the wire. During last years this idea has led to a great number of important experiments in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor systems, where the main signature is an emergent zero-bias peak (ZBP) in the differential conductance as the Z…
We demonstrate that a suspended nanowire forming a weak link between two superconductors can be cooled to its motional ground state by a supercurrent flow. The predicted cooling mechanism has its origins in magnetic field induced inelastic tunneling of the macroscopic superconducting phase associated with the junction. Furthermore, we show the voltage-drop over the junction is proportional to the average population of the vibrational modes in the stationary regime, a phenomena which can be used to probe the level of cooling.
The influence of ballistic channels superimposed on tunneling conduction channels in magnetic tunnel junctions has been studied in a manganese oxide based tunneling device. Inversion of magnetoresistance has been observed in magnetic tunnel junctions with pinhole nanocontacts over a broad temperature range. The tunnel magnetoresistance undergoes a change of sign at higher bias and temperature. This phenomenon is attributed to the parallel conduction channels consisting of spin conserved ballistic transport through the pinhole contact where the transmission probability is close to unity and spi…
In this contribution, we calculate the spin-dependent ballistic and coherent transport through epitaxial Fe/ZnSe (001) simple and double magnetic tunnel junctions with two different interface terminations: Zn-terminated and Se-terminated. The electronic structure of the junctions is modeled by a second-nearest neighbors {\it spd} tight-binding Hamiltonian parametrized to {\it ab initio} calculated band structures, while the conductances and the tunneling magnetoresistance are calculated within Landauer's formalism. The calculations are done at zero bias voltage and as a function of energy. We …
