After a brief discussion of effective field theory applied to nuclear clusters, I present the aspect of Coulomb interactions, with applications to low-energy alpha-alpha and nucleon-alpha scattering.
The unusual structure of Li11, the first halo nucleus found, is analyzed by the Preparata model of nuclear structure. By applying Coherent Nucleus Theory, we obtain an interaction potential for the halo-neutrons that rightly reproduces the fundamental state of the system.
We have proposed a procedure to extract the probability for valence particle being out of the binding potential from the measured nuclear asymptotic normalization coefficients. With this procedure, available data regarding the nuclear halo candidates are systematically analyzed and a number of halo nuclei are confirmed. Based on these results we have got a much relaxed condition for nuclear halo occurrence. Furthermore, we have presented the scaling laws for the dimensionless quantity $<r^{2}>/R^{2}$ of nuclear halo in terms of the analytical expressions of the expectation value for the operat…
The sensitive correlations between the low-density halo structure and the high-density properties of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) are constructed in light kaonic nuclei with the relativistic mean-field theory. More specifically, the $1p_{1/2}$ halo spreads out linearly with increasing the pressure and sound velocity square at supra-normal densities and quadratically with decreasing the incompressibility at saturation density. These results suggest that the novel halo in light kaonic nuclei can serve as a sensitive indicator of the nuclear EOS of symmetric matter at supra-normal densitie…
We develop the method for the calculation of the total reaction cross sections induced by the halo nuclei and stable nuclei. This approach is based on the Glauber theory, which is valid for nuclear reactions at high energy. It is extended for nuclear reactions at low energy and intermediate energy by including both the quantum correction and Coulomb correction under the assumption of the effective nuclear density distribution. The calculated results of the total reaction cross section induced by stable nuclei agree well with the 30 experimental data within 10 percent accuracy. The comparison be…
Nuclear halo structure and restoration of relativistic symmetry are studied within the framework of the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (RHFB) theory. Giant halos as well as ordinary ones are found in Cerium isotopes close to the neutron drip line. Bridged by T=0 {channel}, the restoration of pseudo-spin symmetry (PSS) plays an essential role in stabilizing the neutron halo structures. The Fock terms, especially the $ρ$-tensor couplings, not only play significant role in the PSS restoration but also present substantial contributions to the T=0 {channel}, from which is well demonstrated th…
Nuclei with large neutron-to-proton ratios have neutron skins, which manifest themselves in an excess of neutrons at distances greater than the radius of the proton distribution. In addition, some drip-line nuclei develop very extended halo structures. The neutron halo is a threshold effect; it appears when the valence neutrons occupy weakly bound orbits. In this study, nuclear skins and halos are analyzed within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theories for spherical shapes. It is demonstrated that skins, halos, and surface thickness can b…
All possible dissociation cross sections for the loosely bound three-body halo nuclei $^6$He (n+n+$α$) and $^{11}$Li (n+n+$^{9}$Li) are computed as functions of target and beam energy. Both Coulomb and nuclear interactions are included in the same theoretical framework. The measurements agree with the calculations for energies above 100 Mev/nucleon. The largest cross sections correspond to final states with zero or three particles for heavy and with two neutrons for light targets.
I investigate the elastic electron scattering off nuclei far from the stability line. The effects of the neutron and proton skins and halos on the differential cross sections are explored. Examples are given for the charge distribution in Sn isotopes and its relation to the neutron skin. The neutron halo in $^{11}$Li and the proton halo in $^{8}$B are also investigated. Particular interest is paid to the inverse scattering problem and its dependence on the experimental precision. These studies are of particular interest for the upcoming electron ion colliders at the GSI and RIKEN facilities.
We investigate dissociation reactions of loosely bound and spatially extended three-body systems. We formulate a practical method for simultaneous treatment of long-range Coulomb and short-range nuclear interactions. We use $^6$He (n+n+$α$) and $^{11}$Li (n+n+$^{9}$Li) as examples and study the two-neutron separation cross sections as functions of target and beam energy. Individual Coulomb and nuclear as well as interference contributions are also extracted.
Deformation properties of weakly bound nuclei are discussed in the deformed single-particle model. It is demonstrated that in the limit of a very small binding energy the valence particles in specific orbitals, characterized by a very small projection of single-particle angular momentum onto the symmetry axis of a nucleus, can give rise to the halo structure which is completely decoupled from the rest of the system. The quadrupole deformation of the resulting halo is completely determined by the intrinsic structure of a weakly bound orbital, irrespective of the shape of the core.
The halo effect in the final states of astrophysically relevant direct neutron--capture reactions by neutron--rich nuclei is discussed. As an example, we calculate the cross sections for $^{18}$O(n,$γ$)$^{19}$O at thermonuclear and thermal energies.
The 11Be break-up is calculated using a non perturbative time-dependent quantum calculation. The evolution of the neutron halo wave function shows an emission of neutron at large angles for grazing impact parameters and at forward angles for large impact parameters. The neutron angular distribution is deduced for the different targets and compared to experimental data. We emphasize the diversity of diffraction mechanisms, in particular we discuss the interplay of the nuclear effects such as the towing mode and the Coulomb break-up. A good agreement is found with experimental data.
The Coulomb-nuclear interference is studied as a function of the projectile ground-state binding energy in the 8Li + 12C and 8Li + 208Pb breakup reactions, by considering an arbitrary range for the 8Li ground-state binding energies εb, varying from the experimental one 2.03 MeV down to 0.01 MeV. Regardless the target mass, we first show that the Coulomb breakup cross section is stronger dependent on εb than the nuclear breakup cross section, due to the long-range nature of the Coulomb forces and to the electromagnetic transition matrix elements. For example, in case of 8Li + 208Pb reaction at …
The clear separation of scales observed in halo nuclei between the extended halo and the compact core makes these exotic nuclei a perfect subject for Effective Field Theory (EFT). Such description leads to a systematic expansion of the core-halo Hamiltonian, which naturally orders the nuclear-structure observables. In this short review, I show the advantage there is to include Halo-EFT descriptions within precise models of reactions. It helps identifying the nuclear-structure observables that matter in the description of the reactions, and enables us to easily bridge predictions of nuclear-str…
Theoretical investigation of two-proton halo-nucleus 17Ne has revealed that the valence protons are more likely to be positioned in the d-state than the s-state. In this study, this finding is clarified by calculation of the binding energy, it is found that the theoretical values for the d-state are closer to the experimental values, in contrast with those obtained for the s-state. The three-body model and MATLAB software are utilised to obtain theoretical values for the three-body-model 17Ne binding energy and matter radius. 17Ne has halo properties of a weakly bound valence proton, a binding…
In order to clear up the sensitivity of the nucleus--nucleus reaction cross sections $σ_R$ to the nuclear matter distributions in exotic halo nuclei, we have calculated the values of $σ_R$ for scattering of $^6$He, $^{11}$Li, and $^{19}$C nuclei on several nuclear targets at the energy of 0.8 GeV/nucleon. The calculations were performed in the "rigid target" approximation to the Glauber theory, different shapes of the nuclear density distributions in $^6$He, $^{11}$Li, and $^{19}$C being assumed.
We review the properties of nuclear halos and nuclear skins in drip line nuclei in the framework of the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with continuum effects and projection on good particle number with the Gogny force. We first establish the position of the un-projected HFB drip lines for the two most employed parametrizations of the Gogny force and show that the use of finite-range interactions leads almost always to small-sized halos, even in the least bound nuclei, which is in agreement with most mean-field predictions. We also discuss the size of the neutron skin at the drip line…
In order to clear up the sensitivity of the nucleus-nucleus scattering to the nuclear matter distributions of exotic halo nuclei, we have calculated differential cross sections for elastic scattering of the $^6$He and $^{11}$Li nuclei on several nuclear targets at the energy of 0.8 GeV/nucleon with different assumed nuclear density distributions in $^6$He and $^{11}$Li.
Neutron and proton densities in the nuclear periphery are investigated within (p,n) charge-exchange isobar transitions. For this purpose we have developed parameter-free optical potentials with a detailed treatment of the in-medium $t_τ$ part of the effective interaction. Non local coupled-channel Lane equations are solved to obtain the scattering observables. The use of conventional proton and neutron densities significantly underestimates Fermi (forward-angle) cross-sections in agreement with findings by various other groups. However, we have found model-independent densities which provide a…

With the help of a unified description of the nuclear structure and of the direct reaction mechanism we show that a recent 1H(11Li,9Li)3H experiment provides, for the first time in nuclear physics, direct evidence of phonon mediated pairing.
A new two-dimensional procedure for extrapolation of the values of matter, neutron, and proton radii obtained in no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations to infinite size of its basis is proposed. A relationship between the radii is used as an additional test. Together with the JISP16 potential, which is frequently used in NCSM calculations of the radii, the Daejeon16 potential is applied for these purposes for the first time. Halo nucleus 6He is the object of studies. The small spread of radii values, successful testing using relationship between the values of these three radii, and reasonable…
The dissociation of halo nuclei through their collision with light and heavy targets is considered within the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels theory. We study the one-proton halo nucleus $^8$B and the one-neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be, as well as the more normal $^7$Be. The procedure previously employed to extract the Coulomb dissociation cross section by subtracting the nuclear one is critically assessed, and the scaling law usually assumed for the target mass dependence of the nuclear breakup cross section is also tested. It is found that the nuclear breakup cross section for these v…
Detailed analysis of the distribution of nuclear matter in the halo nucleus $^{11}$Be is performed within the microscopic approach based on the flexible variational basis of the functions of the "polarized" orbitals model. It is shown that the proposed approach reproduces, in agreement with the experiment, the most distinguishing features of the mass distribution in this system. Taking into account the results of specific calculations and the exceptionally high reliability of the experimental data on the nuclear density distribution in the "tail" of $^{11}$Be, we make a conclusion about the ex…
Assuming a~simple spherical relativistic mean field model of the nucleus, we estimate the width of the antiproton--neutron annihilation ($Γ_n$) and the width of antiproton--proton ($Γ_p$) annihilation, in an antiprotonic atom system. This allows us to determine the halo factor $f$, which is then discussed in the context of experimental data obtained in measurements recently done on LEAR utility at CERN. Another quantity which characterizes the deviation of the average nuclear densities ratio from the corresponding ratio of the homogeneous densities is introduced too. It was shown that it is al…
Nuclear many-body theory is used to study nuclear matter and finite nuclei at extreme isospin. In-medium interactions in asymmetric nuclear matter are obtained from (Dirac-) Brueckner theory. Neutron skin formation in Ni and Sn isotopes is investigated by relativistic mean-field calculations in DDRH theory with density dependent meson-nucleon vertices. Applications to light nuclei are discussed with special emphasis on pairing and core polarization in weakly bound nuclei. Approaches accounting for continuum coupling in dripline pairing and core polarization are presented. Calculations for the …
Momentum distributions of particles from nuclear break-up of fast three-body halos are calculated for polarized beam and outgoing fragments. These momentum distributions are combined in observable quantities which emphasize the two-body correlations in the initial three-body structure as well as in the final two-body system. Applying the formalism to 11Li we find a sensitive dependence on the p-wave content and on the position of the p-resonances in 10Li. Polarization experiments are then a new tool to study correlations in nuclear halos.
I present results and highlight aspects of halo EFT to loosely bound systems composed of nucleons and alpha particles, with emphasis on Coulomb interactions.
It is shown that the hole in the centre of $ ^{3}H $, $ ^{3}He $ and $ ^{4}He $, the neutron halos in nuclei, the $ α- $ and other clustering effects in nuclei and the nuclear molecules all basically arise due to the same underlying effect. We shall show that all these ground state properties of nuclei are manifestations of quark effects. The role of triton clustering in very neutron rich nuclei is emphasized. All these require the concept of hidden colour states which arise from confinement ideas of QCD for the multi-quark systems. This provides comprehensive understanding of diverse nuclear …
The halo factor is one of the experimental data which describes a distribution of neutrons in nuclear periphery. In the presented paper we use Skyrme-Hartree (SH) and the Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) models and we calculate the neutron excess factor $Δ_B$ defined in the paper which differs slightly from halo factor $f_{\rm exp}$. The results of the calculations are compared to the measured data.
We present a theory of one-neutron halo breakup reactions within the framework of post-form distorted wave Born approximation wherein pure Coulomb, pure nuclear and their interference terms are treated consistently in a single setup. This formalism is used to study the breakup of one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on several targets of different masses. We investigate the role played by the pure Coulomb, pure nuclear and the Coulomb-nuclear interference terms by calculating several reaction observables. The Coulomb-nuclear interference terms are found to be important for more exclusive observables.
Nuclear and Coulomb breakup of halo nuclei have been treated often as incoherent processes and structure information have been extracted from their study. The aim of this paper is to clarify whether interference effects and Coulomb-nuclear couplings are important and how they could modify the simple picture previously used. We calculate the neutron angular and energy distributions by using first order perturbation theory for the Coulomb amplitude and an eikonal approach for the nuclear breakup. This allows for a simple physical interpretation of the results which are mostly analytical. Our for…
Halo nuclei are located far from stability and exhibit a very peculiar structure. Due to their very short lifetime, they are often studied through reactions. Breakup reactions are of particular interest since their cross sections are large for these loosely-bound nuclei. Inclusive measurements of breakup--also called knockout reactions--have even higher statistics. In this proceeding, we study which nuclear-structure information can be inferred from the parallel-momentum distribution of the core of one-neutron halo nuclei after the knockout of its halo neutron. In particular, we analyse the in…
The covariant density functional theory with a few number of parameters has been widely used to describe the ground-state and excited-state properties for the nuclei all over the nuclear chart. In order to describe exotic properties of unstable nuclei, the contribution of the continuum and its coupling with bound states should be treated properly. In this Topical Review, the development of the covariant density functional theory in continuum will be introduced, including the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory, the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, and the …
In this paper we show how effective parameters such as effective binding energies can be defined for a proton in the combined nuclear-Coulomb potential, including also the target potential, in the case in which the proton is bound in a nucleus which is partner of a nuclear reaction. Using such effective parameters the proton behaves similarly to a neutron. In this way some unexpected results obtained from dynamical calculations for reactions initiated by very weakly bound proton halo nuclei can be interpreted. Namely the fact that stripping dominates the nuclear breakup cross section which in …
The study of exotic nuclei---nuclei with the ratio of neutron number $N$ to proton number $Z$ deviating much from that of those found in nature---is at the forefront of nuclear physics research because it can not only reveal novel nuclear properties and thus enrich our knowledge of atomic nuclei, but also help us to understand the origin of chemical elements in the nucleosynthesis. With the development of radioactive ion beam facilities around the world, more and more unstable nuclei become experimentally accessible. Many exotic nuclear phenomena have been observed or predicted in nuclei far f…
Background: Information about the structure of halo nuclei are often inferred from one-neutron knockout reactions. Typically the parallel-momentum distribution of the remaining core is measured after a high-energy collision of the exotic projectile with a light target. Purpose: We study how the structure of halo nuclei affects knockout observables considering an eikonal model of reaction. Method: To evaluate the sensitivity of both the diffractive and stripping parallel-momentum distributions to the structure of halo nuclei, we consider several descriptions of the projectile within a halo effe…
In this paper we presented a short review of radioactive halos as from the perspective of their interpretation as integral record in time of different kind of known or unknown radioactivities. A special attention is paid for the unified interpretation of the supergiant halos (SGH), discovered by Grady, Walker and Laemlein, as integral record of pion emission during fission.
The theory of weakly bound cluster breakup, like halo nucleus breakup, needs an accurate treatment of the transitions from bound to continuum states induced by the nuclear and Coulomb potentials. When the transition probability is not very small, a non-perturbative framework might be necessary. Nuclear excitation dominates at small impact parameters whereas the Coulomb potential being long range acts over a larger impact parameter interval. In this article, we propose an effective breakup amplitude which meets a number of requirements necessary for an accurate quantitative description of the b…
