QCD sum rules for D and B mesons embedded in cold nuclear matter are evaluated. We quantify the mass splitting of D - D-bar and B - B-bar mesons as a function of the nuclear matter density; extrapolated to saturation density it is in the order of 60 and 130 MeV driven essentially by the condensates <q-adjoint q>, <q-adjoint g sigma G q> and <q-bar q>. The genuine chiral condensate <q-bar q>, amplified by heavy-quark masses, enters the Borel transformed sum rules for the mass splitting beyond linear density dependence. Including strange quark condensates reveals a umerically smaller and opposite effect for the Ds - Ds-bar mass splitting.
The properties of vector mesons in nuclear matter are discussed. I examine the constraints imposed by elementary processes on the widths of $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons in nuclear matter. Furthermore, results for the $ρ$- and $ω$-nucleon scattering amplitudes obtained by fitting meson-nucleon scattering data in a coupled-channel approach are presented.
We employ meson-nucleon scattering data to deduce the properties of the low-mass vector mesons in nuclear matter, and present results for the $ρ$ and $ω$ in-medium spectral functions. The corresponding thermal emission rate for lepton pairs is also discussed.
The behavior of pseudoscalar mesons in nuclear medium is reviewed with an emphasis on the possibility of their Bose-Einstein condensation in dense matter. In particular pion condensation is reexamined in detail, stimulated by recent theoretical and observational developments.
In this paper we present a phenomenological treatment of charm quark energy loss before fragmenting into D mesons and calculate nuclear modification factor, '$R_{AA}$' and azimuthal anisotropy, '$v_2$' of D mesons for lead on lead collision at LHC energy of $\sqrt{s}$=2.76 A TeV.
We discuss aspects of a covariant QCD modeling of meson physics by illustrating applications to several coupling constants and form factors. In particular, we cover the $ρππ$ and $π^0 γγ$ interactions, the $ρ$ contribution to the pion charge radius, and $πNN$ coupling.
Masses of hadrons (baryons as well as mesons) are modified in the nuclear medium because of their interactions. In this paper we investigate the effect of in-medium meson masses on the properties of the nuclear matter. The calculations are performed in the Walecka model. We find that with the inclusion of meson mass modification, the computed equation of state becomes softer. We also find that the decrease in the nucleon as well as meson masses in the medium is smaller than that obtained in the case when the in-medium meson masses are not taken into account.
A new improved quark mass density-dependent model including u, d quarks, $σ$ mesons, $ω$ mesons and $ρ$ mesons is presented. Employing this model, the properties of nuclear matter, neutron matter and neutron star are studied. We find that it can describe above properties successfully. The results given by the new improved quark mass density- dependent model and by the quark meson coupling model are compared.
We suggest the new experimental method to explore the properties of slow strange mesons at normal nuclear matter density. We show that the $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ mesons with extremely small momenta relative to the surrounding medium rest frame can be produced in nucleus-nucleon collisions and their production cross sections are experimentally measurable. The experiments on study of the momentum dependence of meson-nuclear potentials are discussed.
Employing QCD sum rules the in-medium modifications of scalar charm mesons in a cold nuclear matter environment are estimated. The mass splitting of D*-D*-bar is quantified.
QCD sum rules for chiral partners in the open-charm meson sector are presented at nonzero baryon net density or temperature. We focus on the differences between pseudo-scalar and scalar as well as vector and axial-vector D mesons and derive the corresponding Weinberg type sum rules. This allows for the identification of such QCD condensates which drive the non-degeneracy of chiral partners in lowest order of the strong coupling alpha_s and which therefore may serve as "order parameters" for chiral restoration (or elements thereof).
The non-resonant (seagull) contribution to the nuclear Compton amplitude at low energies is strongly influenced by nucleon correlations arising from meson exchange. We study this problem in a modified Fermi gas model, where nuclear correlation functions are obtained with the help of perturbation theory. The dependence of the mesonic seagull amplitude on the nuclear radius is investigated and the influence of a realistic nuclear density on this amplitude is dicussed. We found that different form factors appear for the static part (proportional to the enhancement constant $κ$) of the mesonic sea…
$ϕ$-meson mass in nuclear matter ($m_ϕ^*$) is investigated using an effective Lagrangian of $ϕ$ interacting with octet baryons. $m_ϕ^*$ decreases by a few \% in nuclear matter due to the current conservation and effective nucleon/hyperon masses. Its implication to the p-A and A-A collisions are briefly discussed.
We discuss an asymmetry of the decay $ω->e^+e^-$ in nuclear matter with respect to the electron and positron energies. This asymmetry is sensitive to the properties of the $ω$ meson self-energy and, in particular, it has a non-trivial dependence on the $ω$ energy and momentum. Therefore, this asymmetry may serve as a powerful tool in studying the properties of the $ω$ meson in the nuclear medium.
By using a previously developed phenomenological kernel for the study of the light quark QCD sector and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking effects we will examine the relative infrared and ultraviolet QCD dynamics for J=0,1 meson properties. For the same reasons we extend and explore a quark mass depended generalization of the kernel in the heavy quark region and we also compare with the original model. The relation between the dynamics of the quark propagator and the effective kernel with the J=0,1 QQ and qQ mesons and quarks Compton size is also discussed.
After giving brief discussions on the chiral condensate in hot and/or dense hadronic matter and the significance of the $σ$ meson in QCD, we discuss the importance of experiments using nuclear targets including ones with electro-magnetic probes for obtaining clearer confirmation of the existence of the $σ$ meson and for exploring the possible restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium.
Models based on chiral SU(3)_L \otimes SU(3)_R symmetry and vector meson dominance suggest an attractive potential for the $ω$-meson in a nuclear medium. We discuss the feasibility of producing nuclear bound states of $ω$-mesons using $(d,^3He)$ and pion induced reactions on selected nuclear targets.
We consider heavy mesons with charm and bottom in nuclear medium. We construct the effective Lagrangian with axial-vector coupling including 1/M-corrections for the heavy meson mass $M$ by following the velocity-rearrangement invariance. As an application, we consider heavy mesons, $\bar{\mathrm{D}}$ and $\bar{\mathrm{D}}^{\ast}$ mesons for charm and $\mathrm{B}$ and $\mathrm{B}^{\ast}$ mesons for bottom, bound in nuclear matter, and we discuss their in-medium masses modified by the interaction with nucleons via pion exchanges including the 1/M-corrections. The mass modifications are affected …
Chiral effective lagrangians may differ in their prediction of meson-nucleon scattering amplitudes off-meson-mass-shell, but must yield identical S-matrix elements. We argue that the effective meson mass in nuclear matter obtained from chiral effective lagrangians is also unique. Off-mass-shell amplitudes obtained using the PCAC choice of pion field must therefore not be viewed as fundamental constraints on the dynamics, the determination of the effective meson mass in nuclear matter or the possible existence of meson condensates in the ground state of nuclear matter. This hypothesis is borne …
We derive the effective Lagrangian for the low-energy massive meson excitations of the color-flavor-locking (CFL) phase of QCD with 3 flavors of light quarks. We compute the decay constants, the maximum velocities, and the masses of the mesons at large baryon chemical potential mu. The decay constants are linear in mu. The meson maximum velocities are close to that of sound. The meson masses in the CFL phase are significantly smaller than in the normal QCD vacuum and depend only on bare quark masses. The order of the meson masses is, to some extent, reversed compared to that in the QCD vacuum.…
Using a simple parametrization of Breit-Wigner type for the hadronic side of the QCD sum rule for $ρ$ mesons in vacuum as well as in a nuclear medium we explore the range of values for the mass and the width of the $ρ$ meson which are compatible with the operator product expansion.
We discuss the effect of changes in meson properties in a nuclear medium on physical observables, notably, $J/Ψ$ dissociation on pion and $ρ$ meson comovers in relativistic heavy ion collisions, and the prediction of the $ω$-, $η$- and $η'$-nuclear bound states.
Compared with lattice QCD, isospin breaking of heavy-meson decay constants from QCD sum rules agrees for $D$ mesons but disagrees (by a factor of four) for $B$ mesons.
Exotic mesons with quantum numbers of a hybrid ($\bar{q} q g$) such as $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$are shown to exist as narrow resonant states in the large $N_c$ limit of QCD. The width of these states is proportional to $1/N_c$. Possible phenomenological implications for the world of $N_c=3$ are discussed.
We report on recent nonperturbative techniques that combine the information of chiral Lagrangians (with and without resonances) with unitarity in coupled channels and other requirements of the S-matrix theory of the strong interactions. As a result, the region of applicability of such techniques is much larger than the one of Chiral Perturbation Theory allowing one to study also resonance physics. Applications to meson-meson and meson-baryon scattering, as well as to problems where pairs of mesons or a meson and a baryon appear in the initial or final state are shown. Implications in several n…
QCD sum rules for decay constants of heavy mesons with $u$ or $d$ quark yield for $B$ mesons much less isospin breaking than lattice QCD but good agreement for $D$ mesons.
Vector mesons show up in the electromagnetic current-current correlator. QCD sum rules provide a constraint on hadronic models for this correlator. This constraint is discussed for the case of finite nuclear density concerning the longitudinal as well as the transverse part of the current-current correlator at finite three-momentum.
The spectra of the scalar ($σ$) and vector ($ω$) mesons in nuclear matter are studied in detail using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. It is shown that above normal nuclear matter density the effects of $σ$-$ω$ mixing and the decay of the $σ$ into $2π$ change the spectra of $σ$ and $ω$ mesons considerably. As in Quantum Hadrodynamics we find a remarkable spectral change in the $σ$ meson and the longitudinal mode of the $ω$ meson, namely a two-peak structure.
A new tool which combines chiral perturbation theory and unitarity in coupled channels is applied with success to the study of the meson-meson interaction, extending the theoretical predictions up to sqrt{s} = 1.2 GeV, hence improving considerably the convergence radius of conventional chiral perturbation theory. The method is applied to obtain the meson-meson phase shifts and inelasticities as well as the isoscalar pion-pion scattering amplitude inside a nuclear medium.
We construct and investigate an infrared-improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model for mesons. Both linear confinement and chiral symmetry breaking of low energy QCD are well characterized in such an infrared-improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model. The model enables us to obtain a more consistent numerical prediction for the mass spectra of resonance scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector mesons. In particular, the predicted mass for the lightest ground state scalar meson shows a good agreement with the experimental data. The model also provides a remarkable check for the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relati…
We analyze subtracted dispersion relations for meson correlators at finite baryon density and temperature. Such relations are needed for QCD sum rules. We point out the importance of scattering terms, as well as finite, well-defined subtraction constants. Both are necessary for consistency, in particular for the equality of the longitudinal and transverse correlators in the limit of the vanishing three-momentum of mesons relative to the medium. We present detailed calculations in various mesonic channels for the case of the Fermi gas of nucleons.
Thermal Finite Energy QCD sum rules for the vector current correlator are used to study quark-gluon deconfinement. Assuming $ρ$-meson saturation of the correlator in the hadronic sector, and the Operator Product Expansion in QCD, we obtain the temperature behavior of the resonance parameters (coupling, mass, and width), and of the leading vacuum condensates, as well as the perturbative QCD threshold in the complex squared energy plane. The results are consistent with quark-gluon deconfinement at a critical temperature $T_c \simeq 197 MeV$. The temperature dependence of the $ρ$-meson width is o…
A Pomeron-exchange model of exclusive electroproduction of $ρ$-mesons is examined using a dressed-quark propagator. It is shown that by representing the photon-$ρ$-meson-Pomeron coupling by a nonperturbative, confined-quark loop, one obtains predictions for $ρ$-meson electroproduction that are in good agreement with experiment.
Extending previous work we study the constraints of QCD sum rules on mass and width of light vector and axial-vector mesons in vacuum and in a medium with finite nuclear density. For the latter case especially the effect of nuclear pions leading to vector-axial-vector mixing is included in the analysis.
We summarize the current theoretical and experimental status of the spectral changes of vector mesons ($ρ$, $ω$, $ϕ$) in nuclear medium. Various approaches including QCD sum rules, effective theory of hadrons and bag models show decreasing of the vector meson masses in nuclear matter. Possibility to detect the mass shift through lepton pairs in $γ-A$, $p-A$ and $A-A$ reactions are also discussed.
We reexamine the quark mass induced term in chiral Lagrangian in color-flavor locking phase in dense QCD, and show that the meson mass term is determined by three independent invariants under chiral-axial symmetry, and a meson mass is given in terms of the quark mass, gap, and the chemical potential by $m_π^2\sim m_q^2Δ\barΔ/μ^2\ln(μ^2/Δ^2)$. Thus mesons become massless as $μ\to\infty$.
We reply to the Comment by Hatsuda and Lee on our recent paper "Meson Masses in Nuclear Matter" (Phys.Rev.Lett. 78, 1010, (1997)). We argue that, contrary to the claim in the Comment, the short distance operator product expansion is not applicable for calculation of meson mass shifts in nuclear matter, since they are determined by long distance physics. We also remark that the suggestion made in the Comment that we overlooked in our paper the mean field description of the mass shifts of low-q mesons is perhaps due to a misunderstanding.
We present a comprehensive study of mass modifications of scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons in nuclear matter using the three-flavor extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) and the two-flavor Parity Doublet Model (PDM). The meson masses in nuclear matter are determined by calculating the one-loop nucleon corrections to the meson mean fields. As a result, we find all spin-$0$ meson masses except those of the pion, kaon, and the lightest scalar-isoscalar mesons decrease at finite baryon density. For spin-$1$ mesons, masses of all axial-vector mesons decrease in medium, and the de…
The effects of magnetic interaction between vector mesons and nucleons on the propagation (mass and width) of the $ρ$-meson in particular moving through very dense nuclear matter is studied and the modifications, qualitative and quantitative, due to the relevant collective modes (zero-sound and plasma frequencies) of the medium discussed. It is shown that the $ρ$-mesons produced in high-energy nuclear collisions will be longitudinally polarized in the region of sufficiently dense nuclear matter, in the presence of such an interaction.
We study the chiral dynamics of vector mesons in two-flavor QCD in vacuum by utilizing a functional renormalization group approach. This allows us to capture the dynamical transition from the quark-gluon phase at high energies to the hadronic phase at low energies without the necessity of model parameter tuning. We use this to analyze the scaling of vector meson masses towards the chiral symmetry breaking scale, the decoupling of the mesons at high energies and the validity of vector meson dominance.
We investigate the bulk properties of symmetric nuclear matter within the framework of an in-medium modified chiral solitonic model with $π$, $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons. We consider the modification of meson degrees of freedom in nuclear matter, based on phenomenology of pion-nucleus scattering and the empirical nuclear mass formula. We discuss the results of the density dependence of the volume term in the mass formula and the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter, comparing them with relativistic mean-field models. The mass dropping of the $ρ$ meson in nuclear matter is also obtained and dis…
We study light meson properties in a magnetic field, focusing on a charged pion and a charged and polarized rho meson, in quenched lattice QCD. The gauge-invariant density-density correlators are calculated to investigate the deformation caused by the magnetic field. We find that these mesons acquire elongated shapes along the magnetic field. The magnitude of the deformation is about 10-20 % when the strength of the magnetic field is of the order of the squared unphysical pion mass.
There are generally two types of Wick contractions in lattice QCD calculations of a correlation function --- connected and disconnected ones. The disconnected contribution is difficult to calculate and noisy, thus it is often neglected. In the context of studying tetraquarks, hadronic molecules and meson-meson scattering, we show that whenever there are both connected and singly disconnected contractions, the singly disconnected part gives the leading order contribution, and thus should never be neglected. As an explicit example, we show that information about the scalar mesons sigma, f0(980),…
We scrutinize recent findings on the charged-pion elastic form factor and the form factors entering in neutral-meson-to-photons transition amplitudes within the framework of QCD sum rules.
We present results for correlators and spectral functions of open charm mesons using 2+1 flavours of clover fermions on anisotropic lattices. The D mesons are found to dissociate close to the deconfinement crossover temperature Tc. Our preliminary results suggest a shift in the thermal D meson mass below Tc. Mesons containing strange quarks exhibit smaller thermal modifications than those containing light quarks.
We extend the formalism pioneered by Callan, Coote and Gross to investigate the meson-meson scattering within the framework of 't Hooft model, i.e., the two-dimensional QCD in the $N_c\to \infty$ limit. We derive the analytic expressions for various two-body meson-meson scattering amplitudes, concentrating on those quark diagrams which may be identified as the meson-meson contact interaction vertex in the context of the mesonic effective lagrangian in $1/N_c$ expansion. We also carry out a detailed numerical study for the meson-meson scattering for various quark flavors, and observe the near-t…
We study the impact of higher order quark-meson scattering processes on the chiral phase structure of two-flavour QCD at finite temperature and quark density. Thermal, density and quantum fluctuations are included within a functional renormalisation group approach to the quark-meson model. We present results on the chiral phase boundary, the critical endpoint, and the curvature of the phase transition line at vanishing density.
For some experimental guidelines of the next millenium, I review the determinations of the masses, decays and mixings of the gluonia, scalar and hybrid mesons from QCD spectral sum rules and low-energy theorems, and compare them with the lattice.
We present results for screening masses of light and strange mesons in 2+1 flavour QCD using improved (p4fat3) staggered fermions on 6x24^3 lattices. We have studied the screening masses of scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector and axial-vector mesons along the line of constant physics, determined by a pion mass ~220 MeV and a kaon mass ~500 MeV. In order to investigate the cut-off and volume dependencies we have also performed studies of the meson screening correlators in the non-interacting theory using the p4 and the standard staggered discretizations.
We derive the pion mass and the elastic pion-pion scattering amplitude in the QCD theta-vacuum up to next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. Using the modified inverse amplitude method, we study the theta-dependence of the mass and width of the light scalar meson sigma(500) and the vector meson rho(770).
Slight sophistications of the QCD sum-rule formalism may have great impact on the reliability of predicted hadron observables, as exemplified for the case of heavy-meson decay constants.
We study the scaling of the $^3S_1-^1S_0$ meson mass splitting and the pseudoscalar weak decay constants with the mass of the meson, as seen in the available experimental data. We use an effective light-front QCD-inspired dynamical model regulated at short-distances to describe the valence component of the pseudoscalar mesons. The experimentally known values of the mass splittings, decay constants (from global lattice-QCD averages) and the pion charge form factor up to 4 [GeV/c]$^2$ are reasonably described by the model
