A new improved quark mass density-dependent model including u, d quarks, $σ$ mesons, $ω$ mesons and $ρ$ mesons is presented. Employing this model, the properties of nuclear matter, neutron matter and neutron star are studied. We find that it can describe above properties successfully. The results given by the new improved quark mass density- dependent model and by the quark meson coupling model are compared.
The properties of vector mesons in nuclear matter are discussed. I examine the constraints imposed by elementary processes on the widths of $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons in nuclear matter. Furthermore, results for the $ρ$- and $ω$-nucleon scattering amplitudes obtained by fitting meson-nucleon scattering data in a coupled-channel approach are presented.
The properties of neutron stars are investigated by including $δ$ meson field in the Lagrangian density of modified quark-meson coupling model. The $Σ^-$ population with $δ$ meson is larger than that without $δ$ meson at the beginning, but it becomes smaller than that without $δ$ meson as the appearance of $Ξ^-$. The $δ$ meson has opposite effects on hadronic matter with or without hyperons: it softens the EOSes of hadronic matter with hyperons, while it stiffens the EOSes of pure nucleonic matter. Furthermore, the leptons and the hyperons have the similar influence on $δ$ meson effects. The $…
We employ meson-nucleon scattering data to deduce the properties of the low-mass vector mesons in nuclear matter, and present results for the $ρ$ and $ω$ in-medium spectral functions. The corresponding thermal emission rate for lepton pairs is also discussed.
We investigate the effects of meson-mass reduction on the properties of the neutron star matter. We adopt the Brown-Rho scaling law to take into account density dependence of meson masses in the quantum hadrodynamics, quark-meson coupling and modified quark-meson coupling models. It is found that the equation of state becomes stiff when the mass of meson is reduced in dense medium. We discuss its implication on the properties of the neutron star.
The behavior of pseudoscalar mesons in nuclear medium is reviewed with an emphasis on the possibility of their Bose-Einstein condensation in dense matter. In particular pion condensation is reexamined in detail, stimulated by recent theoretical and observational developments.
In this paper we present a phenomenological treatment of charm quark energy loss before fragmenting into D mesons and calculate nuclear modification factor, '$R_{AA}$' and azimuthal anisotropy, '$v_2$' of D mesons for lead on lead collision at LHC energy of $\sqrt{s}$=2.76 A TeV.
We calculate the total mass, radius, moment of inertia and surface gravitational redshift for neutron stars using various equations of state. The latter are derived from recent meson-exchange potential models, employing both a relativistic and a non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach.
Masses of hadrons (baryons as well as mesons) are modified in the nuclear medium because of their interactions. In this paper we investigate the effect of in-medium meson masses on the properties of the nuclear matter. The calculations are performed in the Walecka model. We find that with the inclusion of meson mass modification, the computed equation of state becomes softer. We also find that the decrease in the nucleon as well as meson masses in the medium is smaller than that obtained in the case when the in-medium meson masses are not taken into account.
In order to obtain the properties of compact stellar objects, appropriate equations of state have to be used. In the literature, strange meson fields, namely the scalar meson field $σ^*(975)$ and the vector meson field $ϕ(1020)$, had to be considered in order to reproduce the observed strongly attractive $ΛΛ$ interaction. The introduction of these strange mesons makes the equations of state harder (EOS) due to the repulsive effect of the $ϕ(1020)$ meson. In this work the inclusion of these mesons in the equation of state and their influence on the properties of the neutron stars are investigat…
We suggest the new experimental method to explore the properties of slow strange mesons at normal nuclear matter density. We show that the $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ mesons with extremely small momenta relative to the surrounding medium rest frame can be produced in nucleus-nucleon collisions and their production cross sections are experimentally measurable. The experiments on study of the momentum dependence of meson-nuclear potentials are discussed.
Employing QCD sum rules the in-medium modifications of scalar charm mesons in a cold nuclear matter environment are estimated. The mass splitting of D*-D*-bar is quantified.
The non-resonant (seagull) contribution to the nuclear Compton amplitude at low energies is strongly influenced by nucleon correlations arising from meson exchange. We study this problem in a modified Fermi gas model, where nuclear correlation functions are obtained with the help of perturbation theory. The dependence of the mesonic seagull amplitude on the nuclear radius is investigated and the influence of a realistic nuclear density on this amplitude is dicussed. We found that different form factors appear for the static part (proportional to the enhancement constant $κ$) of the mesonic sea…
We study the effects of isovector-scalar ($δ$)-meson on neutron star. Influence of $δ$-meson on both static and rotating neutron star is discussed. Inclusion of $δ$-meson in a neutron star system consisting of proton, neutron and electron, make the equation of state stiffer in higher density and consequently increases the maximum mass of the star. But induction of $δ$-meson in the hyperon star decreases the maximum mass of the hyperon star. This is due to the early evolution of hyperons in presence of $δ-$meson.
$ϕ$-meson mass in nuclear matter ($m_ϕ^*$) is investigated using an effective Lagrangian of $ϕ$ interacting with octet baryons. $m_ϕ^*$ decreases by a few \% in nuclear matter due to the current conservation and effective nucleon/hyperon masses. Its implication to the p-A and A-A collisions are briefly discussed.
We discuss an asymmetry of the decay $ω->e^+e^-$ in nuclear matter with respect to the electron and positron energies. This asymmetry is sensitive to the properties of the $ω$ meson self-energy and, in particular, it has a non-trivial dependence on the $ω$ energy and momentum. Therefore, this asymmetry may serve as a powerful tool in studying the properties of the $ω$ meson in the nuclear medium.
After giving brief discussions on the chiral condensate in hot and/or dense hadronic matter and the significance of the $σ$ meson in QCD, we discuss the importance of experiments using nuclear targets including ones with electro-magnetic probes for obtaining clearer confirmation of the existence of the $σ$ meson and for exploring the possible restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium.
In the present work the conjunction of chiral SU(3) model with QCD sum rules is employed to explore the possibility of $ρ$ meson condensation in neutron stars. The quark and gluon condensates in terms of which the in-medium masses of $ρ$ mesons can be expressed are calculated using the chiral SU(3) model in the charge neutral matter which is relevant for neutron stars. It is observed that condition of $ρ$ meson condensation is satisfied for the density of about 7$ρ_{0}$, where $ρ_{0}$ is the nuclear saturation density. In the end, a brief qualitative discussion of the magnetic field is also in…
The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model for nuclear matter, which describes nuclear matter as non-overlapping MIT bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons is modified by the introduction of a density dependent bag constant. It is found that when the bag constant is significantly reduced in nuclear medium with respect to its free space value, large canceling isoscalar Lorentz scalar and vector potentials for the nucleon in nuclear matter emerge naturally. Such potentials are comparable to those suggested by relativistic nuclear phenomenology. This suggests that the mo…
I estimate the degree of local chemical equilibration for $π$, $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons in ultra--relativistic nuclear collisions. The $π$ and $ρ$ mesons remain near chemical equilibrium in all cases, while the $ω$ meson density is typically 30--50\% higher than the equilibrium value for O+Ag collisions at $\sqrt{s}=20$ GeV. If chemical reactions are turned off, the $ω$ meson density is much larger, 2.5--3 times its equilibrium value. Thus, $ω$ mesons may provide the most sensitive tests for the degree of chemical equilibration in nuclear collisions.
Density dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock theory has been extended to describe properties of exotic nuclei. The effects of Fock exchange terms and of pi - and rho - meson contributions are discussed. These effects are found to be more important for neutron rich nuclei than for nuclei near the valley of stability.
We study the properties of the kappa meson in the nuclear medium, starting from a chiral unitary model of S-wave, I=1/2 K-pi scattering, which describes the elastic K-pi phase shifts and generates a pole in the amplitude. Medium effects are considered by including pion and kaon selfenergies. We explore the changes in the kappa pole position and in the K-pi scattering amplitude at finite density, with two different models for the kaon selfenergy.
In this work, propagation properties of the rho meson in symmetric nuclear matter are studied. We make use of a coupled channel unitary approach to meson-meson scattering, calculated from the lowest order Chiral Perturbation Theory lagrangian including explicit resonance fields. Low energy chiral constraints are considered by matching our expressions to those of one loop Ch.P.T. To account for the medium corrections, the rho couples to pion-pion and kaon-antikaon pairs which are properly renormalized in the nuclear medium.
The running of the $ρ\bar N N$ couplings in presence of nuclear matter is studied, and the relevant $β$-functions are shown to be different for $ρ^0$ and $ρ^+$, when the nuclear medium is asymmetric.
We calculate dispersion relations and propagators for the $σ$, $ω$, $ρ$ and $δ$ mesons in relativistic nuclear matter with a proton-neutron asymmetry. In addition to the $σ$-$ω$ and $δ$-$ρ$ mixings already present in symmetric matter, mixing occur between all components of the $σ$-$ω$-$δ$-$ρ$ system when the proton fraction differs from 1/2.
A system of nontopological solitons interacting through scalar and vector meson exchange is used to model nuclear matter. The models studied are of the Friedberg-Lee type, which exhibit dynamical bag formation due to the coupling of quarks to a scalar composite gluon field. It is shown that the chiral chromodielectric model gives the best fit to the empirical data. The presence of the scalar meson guarantees saturation and an increase of the proton charge radius with nuclear density consistent with the EMC effect.
We calculate the effect of many-body interactions in nuclear matter on the spectral function of $ρ$ and $ω$ meson. In particular, we focus on the role played by baryon resonances in this context.
In the present work we include the isovector-scalar $δ$-meson in the quark-meson coupling model (QMC) and study the properties of asymmetric nuclear within QMC without and with the $δ$-meson. Recent constraints set by isospin diffusion on the slope parameter of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density are used to adjust the model parameters. The thermodynamical spinodal surfaces are obtained and the instability region at subsaturation densities within QMC and QMC$δ$ models are compared with mean-field relativistic models. The distillation effect in the QMC model is discussed.
We investigate the equation of state (EOS) for nuclear matter, within the framework of the Relativistic Hartree Fock (RHF) theory, with special emphasis on the role of the Pauli coupling of the vector meson $ρ$ to the nucleon vis-a-vis the eventual softening of the EOS as revealed through a substantial reduction of the incompressibility parameter ($K_0$) for symmetric nuclear matter.
The effects of strong magnetic fields on neutron star matter are investigated in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. The QMC model describes a nuclear many-body system as nonoverlapping MIT bags in which quarks interact through self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons in the mean-field approximation. The results of the QMC model are compared with those obtained in a relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. It is found that quantitative differences exist between the QMC and RMF models, while qualitative trends of the magnetic field effects on the equation of state and composition of n…
The theory of nuclear structure (binding, low energy spectra, transitions, etc.) depends on nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions. The meson theory of NN interactions has predictive power for NN scattering, and partial success when applied to the theory of nuclear structure. Is it possible to test this theoretical picture -- by direct experimental interaction with mesons in nuclei? Some experimental searches for the `pion excess' in nuclei have ambiguous results. How sensitive are such experiments to the mesonic aspects of nuclear structure? These questions are addressed in this talk. More details…
We study a spectral function for $\bar{D}_0^*$ $(0^+)$ meson in symmetric and neutron-rich asymmetric nuclear matter from the viewpoint of the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Nuclear matter is constructed by a parity doublet model with hidden local symmetry which can reproduce properties at normal nuclear matter density as well as those in the vacuum. $\bar{D}$ mesons are introduced by the chiral partner structure. Our results show that a mass of $\bar{D}$ ($0^-$) meson increases while a mass of $\bar{D}_0^*$ meson decreases at mean field level as we increase the baryon density, reflec…
The bosonic excitations induced by the omega meson propagation in dense nuclear matter is studied within the framework of random phase approximation. The collective modes are then analyzed by finding the zeros of the relevant dielectric functions. Subsequently we present closed form analytical expressions for the dispersion relations in different kinematical regime. Next, the analytical behaviour of the in-medium effective propagator for the omega meson is examined. This is exploited to calculate the full spectral function for the transverse (T) and longitudinal (L) mode of the omega meson. In…
The $ϕ$ meson spectrum, which in vacuum is dominated by its coupling to the $\bar{K} K$ system, is modified in nuclear matter. Following a model based on chiral SU(3) dynamics we calculate the $ϕ$ meson selfenergy in nuclear matter considering the $K$ and $\bar{K}$ in-medium properties. For the latter we use the results of previous calculations which account for $S-$ and $P-$wave kaon-nucleon interactions based on the lowest order meson-baryon chiral effective Lagrangian, and this leads to a dressing of the kaon propagators in the medium. In addition, a set of vertex corrections is evaluated t…
The Debye screening masses of the $σ$, $ω$ and neutral $ρ$ mesons and the photon are calculated in the relativistic mean-field approximation. As the density of the nucleon increases, all the screening masses of mesons increase. It shows a different result with Brown-Rho scaling, which implies a reduction in the mass of all the mesons in the nuclear matter except the pion. Replacing the masses of the mesons with their corresponding screening masses in Walecka-1 model, five saturation properties of the nuclear matter are fixed reasonably, and then a density-dependent relativistic mean-field mode…
We study in further detail a nontopological soliton model with coupling between quarks and mesons selected as promising in the previous work. Here we go beyond the Wigner-Seitz approximation by introducing the disorder necessary to reproduce the liquid state. We study nuclear matter, with particular interest in the transition to a quark-gluon plasma. The model studied is a variation of the chiral chromodielectric model of Fai, Perry and Wilets, where explicit coupling to a scalar meson field is introduced.
The recent progress on the study of the collective excitation in relativistic nuclear matter is reviewed. The collective excitation modes are derived by meson propagators in nuclear matter. The mesons we study are $σ, ω, γ$ and $π$ mesons. For pion, we derived not only the relativistic particle - hole, delta - hole excitations but also antiparticle excitations, such as particle - antiparticle, antidelta - particle, delta - antiparticle excitations. By calculating the dispersion relation and the spin - isospin dependent response function, the effects of all these excitation are studied.
The screening potential in the $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$ pairing channels in neutron and nuclear matter in different approximations is discussed. It is found that the vertex corrections to the potential are much stronger in nuclear matter than in neutron matter.
We derive a model Hamiltonian whose ground state expectation value of any two-body operator coincides with that obtained with the Jastrow correlated wave function of the many-body Fermi system. Using this Hamiltonian we show that the variational principle can be extended to treat systems with dynamical mesons, even if in this case the concept of wave function looses its meaning.
The hadronic properties of the $ρ$ meson produced in the inclusive photonuclear reaction have been investigated. The elementary reaction occurring in the nucleus is assumed as $γN \to ρ^0 N$. The $ρ$ meson, while propagating through the nucleus, interacts with the nuclear particles, and therefore, the properties of the $ρ$ meson can be modified because of this interaction. Being a short-lived particle, the $ρ$ meson decays to various elementary particles, such as, $e^+e^-$, $π^+π^-$, .... etc. The $e^+e^-$ invariant mass, i.e., the $ρ$ meson mass, distribution spectra have been calculated to e…
In this work we calculate neutron and proton energy gaps in neutron star matter, using the Bonn meson--exchange interactions and a model--space approach to the gap equation. This approach allows a consistent calculation of energy gaps and single particle energies with the model--space Brueckner--Hartree--Fock (MBHF) method, without double counting of two--particle correlations. Neutron energy gaps are calculated at zero and finite temperature. Proton energy gaps are calculated at beta equilibrium, and it is shown that the inclusion of muons has a significant effect. The results are compared wi…
We investigate the modification of meson spectral densities in dense nuclear matter at zero temperature. These effects are studied in a fully relativistic mean field model which goes beyond the linear density approximation and also includes baryon resonances. In particular, the role of N*(1520) and N*(1720) on the rho meson spectral density is highlighted. Even though the nucleon-nucleon loop and the nucleon-resonance loop contribute with the opposite sign, an overall reduction of rho meson mass is still observed at high density. Importantly, it is shown that the resonances cause substantial b…
An explicit quark model, based on a mean field description of non-overlapping nucleon bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of $σ$, $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons, is used to investigate the properties of both nuclear and neutron matter. We establish a clear understanding of the relationship between this model, which incorporates the internal structure of the nucleon, and QHD. Finally, we use the model to study the density dependence of the quark condensate in-medium.
We calculate the spectral function of the omega meson in nuclear matter at zero temperature by means of the low-density theorem. The omega N forward scattering amplitude is calculated within a unitary coupled-channel effective Lagrangian model that has been applied successfully to the combined analysis of pion- and photon-induced reactions. While the peak of the omega spectral distribution is shifted only slightly, we find a considerable broadening of the omega meson due to resonance-hole excitations. For omega mesons at rest with respect to the surrounding nuclear medium, we find an additiona…
A nuclear model is proposed where the nucleons interact by emitting and absorbing mesons, and where the mesons are treated explicitly. A nucleus in this model finds itself in a quantum superposition of states with different number of mesons. Transitions between these states hold the nucleus together. The model---in its simplest incarnation---is applied to the deuteron, where the latter becomes a superposition of a neutron-proton state and a neutron-proton-meson state. Coupling between these states leads to an effective attraction between the nucleons and results in a bound state with negative …
We derive the QCD sum rules for the vector and scalar meson mixing in nuclear medium, using a two quark interpolating field for both mesons. Modeling the mixing via a nucleon hole contribution with known coupling constant, the sum rule can be used to determine the overlap of the interpolating field and the scalar meson. In the I=0 channel, we find a stable Borel curve and an overlap that is about 10% of the corresponding value in the pseudo scalar or vector channel. The sum rule in the I=1 channel is less reliable but also consistent with a small value for the overlap. These results suggest th…
Three versions of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model are applied to describe properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei. The models differ in the treatment of the bag constant and in terms of nonlinear scalar self-interactions. As a consequence opposite predictions for the medium modifications of the internal nucleon structure arise. After calibrating the model parameters at equilibrium nuclear matter density, binding energies, charge radii, single-particle spectra and density distributions of spherical nuclei are analyzed and compared with QHD calculations. For the models which predict …
Using the quark-meson coupling model with the cloudy bag, we construct the equation of state for neutron stars with hyperons in SU(3) flavor symmetry. The hyperfine interaction due to the gluon exchange and the pion-cloud effect inside a baryon is taken into account in vacuum and nuclear matter. We investigate how the quark degrees of freedom and the exchanges of gluon and pion between two quarks affect the properties of nuclear and neutron-star matter. It is found that the variation of baryon substructure in matter plays an important role in supporting massive neutron stars.
We explore in more detail the modified quark meson coupling (MQMC) model in nuclear matter. Based on previous studies two different functional forms for the density dependence of the bag constant are discussed. For uniform matter distributions the MQMC model can be cast in a form identical to QHD by a redefinition of the sigma meson field. It is then clear that modifications similar to those introduced in QHD will permit the reproduction of all nuclear matter properties including the compressibility. After calibrating the model parameters at equilibrium nuclear matter density, the model and pa…
We calculate the $^1S_0$ pairing gap in nuclear matter by adopting the "in-medium Bonn potential" proposed by Rapp et al. [e-print nucl-th/9706006], which takes into account the in-medium meson mass decrease, as the particle-particle interaction in the gap equation. The resulting gap is significantly reduced in comparison with the one obtained by adopting the original Bonn potential.
In this work we study properties of neutron star crusts, where matter is expected to consist of nuclei surrounded by superfluid neutrons and a homogeneous background of relativistic electrons. The nuclei are disposed in a Coulomb lattice, and it is believed that the structure of the lattice influences considerably the specific heat of the neutronic matter inside the crust of a neutron star. Using a modern meson--exchange potential in the framework of a local--density approximation we calculate the neutronic specific heat accounting for various shapes of the Coulomb lattice, from spherical to n…
We study nuclear symmetry energy and the thermodynamic instabilities of asymmetric nuclear matter in a self-consistent manner by using a modified quark-meson coupling model where the confining interaction for quarks inside a nucleon is represented by a phenomenologically averaged potential in an equally mixed scalar-vector harmonic form. The nucleon-nucleon interaction in nuclear matter is then realized by introducing additional quark couplings to $σ$, $ω$, and $ρ$ mesons through mean-field approximations. We find an analytic expression for the symmetry energy ${\cal E}_{sym}$ as a function of…
A quark-meson coupling model based on the quark model proposed by Bogoliubov for the description of the quark dynamics is developed and applied to the description of neutron stars. Starting from a su(3) symmetry approach, it is shown that this symmetry has to be broken in order to satisfy the constraints set by the hypernuclei and by neutron stars. The model is able to describe observations such as two solar mass stars or the radius of canonical neutron stars within the uncertainties presently accepted. If the optical potentials for $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons in symmetric nuclear matter at saturatio…
The binding energies and matter distributions for the 3- body systems like $ϕ$- meson + 2N, 2$ϕ$ + N and 4- body system like $ϕ$+3n are calculated. For the 3- particle systems two- dimensional Faddeev equations in the differential form are used. For the 4- body system $ϕ$+3n the folding model is applied.
Exchange current corrections are calculated using currents found from the hard-pion model and AV14+3BF wavefunctions. Results are given for the rate and spin observables. Their sensitivity to g_P, the nucleon pseudoscalar form factor, is reported.
A detailed study is made for the nucleon-nucleon interaction based on relativistic mean field theory in which the potential is explicitly expressed in terms of mass and the coupling constant of the meson fields. A unified treatment for self-coupling of isoscalar-scalar $σ-$, isoscalar-vector $ω$-mesons and their coupling constant are given with a complete analytic form. The present investigation is focused on the effect of self-interacting higher order $σ$ and $ω$ field on nuclear properties. An attempt is made to explain the collapsing stage of nucleon by higher order $ω$-field. Both infinite…
We investigate the correlation between nuclear neutron radii and the radius of neutron stars. We use a well-established hadronic SU(3) model based on chiral symmetry that naturally includes non-linear vector meson and scalar meson - vector meson couplings. The relative strengths of the couplings modify the nuclear isospin-dependent interactions. We study the dependence of nuclear and neutron star radii on the coupling strengths. The relevance of the results for parity-violating electron-nucleus scattering and the URCA process in neutron stars is discussed.
The spectral density of the $D$-meson in the nuclear environment is studied within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach assuming a separable potential for the bare meson-baryon interaction. The $DN$ interaction, described through a G-matrix, generates dynamically the $Λ_c$ (2593) resonance. This resonance is the charm counterpart of the $Λ$ (1405) resonance generated from the s-wave $\bar{K}N$ interaction in the I=0 channel. The medium modification of the D-meson spectral density due to the Pauli blocking of intermediate states as well as due to the dressing of the D-mesons, nucleons and…
We have introduced a CJT calculation in studying nuclear matter beyond mean field approximation. Based on the CJT formalism and using Walecka model, we have derived a set of coupled Dyson equations of nucleons and mesons. Neglecting the medium effects of the mesons, the usual MFT results could be reproduced. The beyond MFT calculations have been performed by thermodynamic consistently determining the meson effective masses and solving the coupled gap equations for nucleons and mesons. The numerical results for the nucleon and meson effective masses at finite temperature and chemical potential …
We show that the assumption of dropping meson masses together with conventional many-body effects, implemented in the relativistic Dirac-Brueckner formalism, explains nuclear saturation. We use a microscopic model for correlated $2π$ exchange and include the standard many-body effects on the in-medium pion propagation, which initially increase the attractive nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potential with density. For the vector meson exchanges in both the $ππ$ and $NN$ sector, we assume Brown-Rho scaling which---in concert with `chiral' $ππ$ contact interactions---reduces the attraction at higher densi…
We developed a microscopic model for antikaon absorption on two nucleons in nuclear matter. The absorption is described within a meson-exchange picture and the primary $K^-N$ interaction strength is derived from state-of-the-art chiral coupled channel meson-baryon interaction models. We took into account the medium modification of the $K^-N$ scattering amplitudes due to the Pauli correlations. We derived the $K^-NN$ as well as $K^-N$ optical potentials as functions of nuclear matter density including the real part of the $K^-NN$ potential. We calculated the $K^-$ single- and two-nucleon absorp…
