In the common nonparametric regression model the problem of testing for a specific parametric form of the variance function is considered. Recently Dette and Hetzler (2008) proposed a test statistic, which is based on an empirical process of pseudo residuals. The process converges weakly to a Gaussian process with a complicated covariance kernel depending on the data generating process. In the present paper we consider a standardized version of this process and propose a martingale transform to obtain asymptotically distribution free tests for the corresponding Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramér-von-Mises functionals. The finite sample properties of the proposed tests are investigated by means of a simulation study.
In this paper, we address the problem of testing goodness-of-fit for discrete distributions, where we focus on the geometric distribution. We define new likelihood-based goodness-of-fit tests using the beta-geometric distribution and the type I discrete Weibull distribution as alternative distributions. The tests are compared in a simulation study, where also the classical goodness-of-fit tests are considered for comparison. Throughout the paper we consider conditional testing given a minimal sufficient statistic under the null hypothesis, which enables the calculation of exact p-values. For t…

We propose two nonparametric statistical tests of goodness of fit for conditional distributions: given a conditional probability density function $p(y|x)$ and a joint sample, decide whether the sample is drawn from $p(y|x)r_x(x)$ for some density $r_x$. Our tests, formulated with a Stein operator, can be applied to any differentiable conditional density model, and require no knowledge of the normalizing constant. We show that 1) our tests are consistent against any fixed alternative conditional model; 2) the statistics can be estimated easily, requiring no density estimation as an intermediate…
The concept of conditional expectation is important in applications of probability and statistics in many areas such as reliability engineering, economy, finance, and actuarial sciences due to its property of being the best predictor of a random variable as a function of another random variable. This concept also is essential in the martingale theory and theory of Markov processes. Even though, there has been studied and published many interesting properties of conditional expectations with respect to a sigma-algebra generated by a random variable it remains an attractive subject having intere…
Pearson's chi-squared test is widely used to test the goodness of fit between categorical data and a given discrete distribution function. When the number of sets of the categorical data, say $k$, is a fixed integer, Pearson's chi-squared test statistic converges in distribution to a chi-squared distribution with $k-1$ degrees of freedom when the sample size $n$ goes to infinity. In real applications, the number $k$ often changes with $n$ and may be even much larger than $n$. By using the martingale techniques, we prove that Pearson's chi-squared test statistic converges to the normal under qu…
Goodness-of-fit (GoF) testing is ubiquitous in statistics, with direct ties to model selection, confidence interval construction, conditional independence testing, and multiple testing, just to name a few applications. While testing the GoF of a simple (point) null hypothesis provides an analyst great flexibility in the choice of test statistic while still ensuring validity, most GoF tests for composite null hypotheses are far more constrained, as the test statistic must have a tractable distribution over the entire null model space. A notable exception is co-sufficient sampling (CSS): resampl…
In this paper, we are interested in the problem of smoothing parameter selection in nonparametric curve estimation under dependent errors. We focus on kernel estimation and the case when the errors form a general stationary sequence of martingale difference random variables where neither linearity assumption nor "all moments are finite" are required. We compare the behaviors of the smoothing bandwidths obtained by minimizing either the unknown average squared error, the theoretical mean average squared error, a Mallows-type criterion adapted to the dependent case and the family of criteria know…
We describe a statistical test for association of two autocorrelated time series, one of which generated randomly at each time point from a known but possibly history-dependent distribution. The null hypothesis is that at each time point, the two variables are independent, conditional on history until that time point. We define a test statistic that is a martingale under the null hypothesis and describe an asymptotic test for it based on the martingale central limit theorem. If we reject this null hypothesis, we may infer an immediate causal effect of the randomized variable on the measured va…
Novel significance tests are proposed for the quite general additive concurrent model formulation without the need of model, error structure preliminary estimation or the use of tuning parameters. Making use of the martingale difference divergence coefficient, we propose new tests to measure the conditional mean independence in the concurrent model framework taking under consideration all observed time instants. In particular, global dependence tests to quantify the effect of a group of covariates in the response as well as partial ones to apply covariates selection are introduced. Their asymp…
We consider marked empirical processes indexed by a randomly projected functional covariate to construct goodness-of-fit tests for the functional linear model with scalar response. The test statistics are built from continuous functionals over the projected process, resulting in computationally efficient tests that exhibit root-n convergence rates and circumvent the curse of dimensionality. The weak convergence of the empirical process is obtained conditionally on a random direction, whilst the almost surely equivalence between the testing for significance expressed on the original and on the …
Much of machine learning relies on comparing distributions with discrepancy measures. Stein's method creates discrepancy measures between two distributions that require only the unnormalized density of one and samples from the other. Stein discrepancies can be combined with kernels to define kernelized Stein discrepancies (KSDs). While kernels make Stein discrepancies tractable, they pose several challenges in high dimensions. We introduce kernelized complete conditional Stein discrepancies (KCC-SDs). Complete conditionals turn a multivariate distribution into multiple univariate distributions…
Using cumulative residual processes, we propose joint goodness-of-fit tests for conditional means and variances functions in the context of nonlinear time series with martingale difference innovations. The main challenge comes from the fact the cumulative residual process no longer admits, under the null hypothesis, a distribution-free limit. To obtain a practical solution one either transforms the process in order to achieve a distribution-free limit or approximates the non-distribution free limit using a numerical or a re-sampling technique. Here the three solutions will be considered. It is …
