We study the asymptotic behavior of the least squares estimators of the unknown parameters of bifurcating autoregressive processes. Under very weak assumptions on the driven noise of the process, namely conditional pair-wise independence and suitable moment conditions, we establish the almost sure convergence of our estimators together with the quadratic strong law and the central limit theorem. All our analysis relies on non-standard asymptotic results for martingales.
This paper presents a model of asymmetric bifurcating autoregressive process with random coefficients. We couple this model with a Galton Watson tree to take into account possibly missing observations. We propose least-squares estimators for the various parameters of the model and prove their consistency with a convergence rate, and their asymptotic normality. We use both the bifurcating Markov chain and martingale approaches and derive new important general results in both these frameworks.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the least squares estimator of the unknown parameters of random coefficient bifurcating autoregressive processes. Under suitable assumptions on inherited and environmental effects, we establish the almost sure convergence of our estimates. In addition, we also prove a quadratic strong law and central limit theorems. Our approach mainly relies on asymptotic results for vector-valued martingales together with the well-known Rademacher-Menchov theorem.
We estimate the unknown parameters of an asymmetric bifurcating autoregressive process (BAR) when some of the data are missing. In this aim, we model the observed data by a two-type Galton-Watson process consistent with the binary tree structure of the data. Under independence between the process leading to the missing data and the BAR process and suitable assumptions on the driven noise, we establish the strong consistency of our estimators on the set of non-extinction of the Galton-Watson, via a martingale approach. We also prove a quadratic strong law and the asymptotic normality.
Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. We provide a central limit theorem for general additive functionals of BMC, and prove the existence of three regimes. This corresponds to a competition between the reproducing rate (each individual has two children) and the ergodicity rate for the evolution of the trait. This is in contrast with the work of Guyon (2007), where the considered additive functionals are sums of martingale increments, and only one regime app…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the deviation inequalities and the moderate deviation principle of the least squares estimators of the unknown parameters of general $p$th-order bifurcating autoregressive processes, under suitable assumptions on the driven noise of the process. Our investigation relies on the moderate deviation principle for martingales.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the weighted least squares estimators of the unknown parameters of bifurcating integer-valued autoregressive processes. Under suitable assumptions on the immigration, we establish the almost sure convergence of our estimators, together with the quadratic strong law and central limit theorems. All our investigation relies on asymptotic results for vector-valued martingales.
The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the weighted least square estimators of the unknown parameters of random coefficient bifurcating autoregressive processes. Under suitable assumptions on the immigration and the inheritance, we establish the almost sure convergence of our estimators, as well as a quadratic strong law and central limit theorems. Our study mostly relies on limit theorems for vector-valued martingales.
We describe the asymptotic behavior of the number $Z_n[a_n,\infty)$ of individuals with a large value in a stable bifurcating autoregressive process. The study of the associated first moment $\mathbb{E}(Z_n[a_n,\infty))$ is equivalent to the annealed large deviation problem $\mathbb{P}(Y_n\geq a_n)$, where $Y$ is an autoregressive process in a random environment and $a_n\rightarrow \infty$. The population with large values and the trajectorial behavior of $Z_n[a_n,\infty)$ is obtained from the ancestral paths associated to the large deviations of $Y$ together with its environment. The study of…
A random coefficient autoregressive process is deeply investigated in which the coefficients are correlated. First we look at the existence of a strictly stationary causal solution, we give the second-order stationarity conditions and the autocorrelation function of the process. Then we study some asymptotic properties of the empirical mean and the usual estimators of the process, such as convergence, asymptotic normality and rates of convergence, supplied with the appropriate assumptions on the driving perturbations. Our objective is to get an overview of the influence of correlated coefficie…
We provide deviation inequalities for properly normalized sums of bifurcating Markov chains on Galton-Watson tree. These processes are extension of bifurcating Markov chains (which was introduced by Guyon to detect cellular aging from cell lineage) in case the index set is a binary Galton-Watson process. As application, we derive deviation inequalities for the least-squares estimator of autoregressive parameters of bifurcating autoregressive processes with missing data. These processes allow, in case of cell division, to take into account the cell's death. The results are obtained under an uni…
Vector autoregressive models characterize a variety of time series in which linear combinations of current and past observations can be used to accurately predict future observations. For instance, each element of an observation vector could correspond to a different node in a network, and the parameters of an autoregressive model would correspond to the impact of the network structure on the time series evolution. Often these models are used successfully in practice to learn the structure of social, epidemiological, financial, or biological neural networks. However, little is known about stat…
In this paper we derive the asymptotic properties of the least squares estimator (LSE) of fractionally integrated autoregressive moving-average (FARIMA) models under the assumption that the errors are uncorrelated but not necessarily independent nor martingale differences. We relax considerably the independence and even the martingale difference assumptions on the innovation process to extend the range of application of the FARIMA models. We propose a consistent estimator of the asymptotic covariance matrix of the LSE which may be very different from that obtained in the standard framework. A …

In this paper, we consider a Banach space valued random coefficient autoregressive process. Our studies on this process involve existence, weak law of large numbers, strong law of large numbers, some exponential inequalities, central limit theorem. Our approach is based on a suitable martingale coboundary decomposition in Banach space.

Estimators computed from adaptively collected data do not behave like their non-adaptive brethren. Rather, the sequential dependence of the collection policy can lead to severe distributional biases that persist even in the infinite data limit. We develop a general method -- $\mathbf{W}$-decorrelation -- for transforming the bias of adaptive linear regression estimators into variance. The method uses only coarse-grained information about the data collection policy and does not need access to propensity scores or exact knowledge of the policy. We bound the finite-sample bias and variance of the…
We investigate the almost sure asymptotic properties of vector martingale transforms. Assuming some appropriate regularity conditions both on the increasing process and on the moments of the martingale, we prove that normalized moments of any even order converge in the almost sure cental limit theorem for martingales. A conjecture about almost sure upper bounds under wider hypotheses is formulated. The theoretical results are supported by examples borrowed from statistical applications, including linear autoregressive models and branching processes with immigration, for which new asymptotic pr…
The paper is devoted to establishing some general exponential inequalities for supermartingales. The inequalities improve or generalize many exponential inequalities of Bennett, Freedman, de la Peña, Pinelis and van de Geer. Moreover, our concentration inequalities also improve some known inequalities for sums of independent random variables. Applications associated with linear regressions, autoregressive processes and branching processes are provided. In particular, an interesting application of {de la Peña's} inequality to self-normalized deviations is also provided.
