In this paper, we analyze problems involving matrix variables for which we use a noncommutative algebra setting. To be more specific, we use a class of functions (called NC analytic functions) defined by power series in noncommuting variables and evaluate these functions on sets of matrices of all dimensions; we call such situations dimension-free. These types of functions have recently been used in the study of dimension-free linear system engineering problems.
In this paper we characterize NC analytic maps that send dimension-free matrix balls to dimension-free matrix balls and carry the boundary to the boundary; such maps we call "NC ball maps". We find that up to normalization, an NC ball map is the direct sum of the identity map with an NC analytic map of the ball into the ball. That is, "NC ball maps" are very simple, in contrast to the classical result of D'Angelo on such analytic maps over C. Another mathematically natural class of maps carries a variant of the noncommutative distinguished boundary to the boundary, but on these our results are limited.
We shall be interested in several types of noncommutative balls, conventional ones, but also balls defined by constraints called Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI). What we do here is a small piece of the bigger puzzle of understanding how LMIs behave with respect to noncommutative change of variables.
In this paper, we study the hyperbolic geometry of noncommutative balls generated by the joint operator radius $ω_ρ$, $ρ\in (0,\infty]$, for $n$-tuples of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space. In particular, $ω_1$ is the operator norm, $ω_2$ is the joint numerical radius, and $ω_\infty$ is the joint spectral radius. We provide mapping theorems, von Neumann inequalities, and Schwarz type lemmas for free holomorphic functions on noncommutative balls, with respect to the hyperbolic metric $δ_ρ$, the Carath\' eodory metric $d_K$, and the joint operator radius $ω_ρ$.
In this paper, we initiate the study of sub-pluriharmonic curves in Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras and free pluriharmonic majorants on noncommutative balls. We are lead to a characterization of the noncommutative Hardy space $H^2_{\bf ball}$ in terms of free pluriharmonic majorants, and to a Schur type description of the unit ball of $H^2_{\bf ball}$. These results are used to solve a multivariable commutant lifting problem and provide a description of all solutions.
In this paper we initiate the study of composition operators on the noncommutative Hardy space $H^2_{\bf ball}$. Several classical results about composition operators (boundedness, norm estimates, spectral properties, compactness, similarity) have free analogues in our noncommutative multivariable setting. The most prominent feature of this paper is the interaction between the noncommutative analytic function theory in the unit ball of $B(\cH)^n$, the operator algebras generated by the left creation operators on the full Fock space with $n$ generators, and the classical complex function theory…
In this paper we introduce a hyperbolic distance $δ$ on the noncommutative open ball $[B(H)^n]_1$, where $B(H)$ is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H$, which is a noncommutative extension of the Poincare-Bergman metric on the open unit ball of $C^n$. We prove that $δ$ is invariant under the action of the group $Aut([B(H)^n]_1)$ of all free holomorphic automorphisms of $[B(\cH)^n]_1$, and show that the $δ$-topology and the usual operator norm topology coincide on $[B(H)^n]_1$. Moreover, we prove that $[B(H)^n]_1$ is a complete metric space with respect to the hype…
The theory of characteristic functions for row contractions is used to determine the group $Aut(B(H)^n_1)$ of all free holomorphic automorphisms of the unit ball of $B(H)^n$. We show that the noncommutative Poisson transform commutes with the action of the automorphism group $Aut(B(H)^n_1)$. This leads to a characterization of the unitarily implemented automorphisms of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra $C^*(S_1,..., S_n)$, which leave invariant the noncommutative disc algebra $\cA_n$. This result provides new insight into Voiculescu's group of automorphisms of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra and reveals n…
We extend some inequalities for normal matrices and positive linear maps related to the Russo-Dye theorem. The results cover the case of some positive linear maps on a von Neumann algebra mapping any nonzero operator to an unbounded operator.
We obtain dilation results which simultaneously generalize Sz.-Nagy dilation theorem for contractions, Ando's dilation theorem for commuting contractions, Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem, and Schur's representation for the unit ball of H^\infty, in the framework of noncommutative varieties in several variables and Poisson kernels on Fock spaces. This leads to inequalities which, in the particular case of two contractions, are sharper than Ando's inequality and Agler-McCarthy's inequality in the setting of commuting contractive matrices or arbitrary commuting contractions of class C_0…
Noncommutative analogues of n-dimensional balls are defined by repeated application of the quantum double suspension to the classical low-dimensional spaces. In the `even-dimensional' case they correspond to the Twisted Canonical Commutation Relations of Pusz and Woronowicz. Then quantum spheres are constructed as double manifolds of noncommutative balls. Both C*-algebras and polynomial algebras of the objects in question are defined and analyzed, and their relations with previously known examples are presented. Our construction generalizes that of Hajac, Matthes and Szymanski for `dimension 2…
For any von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$, the noncommutative Mazur map $M_{p,q}$ from $L_p(\mathcal M)$ to $L_q(\mathcal M)$ with $1\leq p,q<\infty$ is defined by $f\mapsto f|f|^{\frac {p-q}q}$. In analogy with the commutative case, we gather estimates showing that $M_{p,q}$ is $\min\{\frac pq,1\}$-Hölder on balls.
This paper is an attempt to unify the multivariable operator model theory for ball-like domains and commutative polydiscs, and extend it to a more general class of noncommutative polydomains. An important role in our study is played by noncommutative Berezin transforms associated with the elements of the polydomain.
We develop a theory of holomorphic functions in several noncommuting (free) variables and thus provide a framework for the study of arbitrary n-tuples of operators. The main topics are the following: Free holomorphic functions and Hausdorff derivations; Cauchy, Liouville, and Schwartz type results for free holomorphic functions; Algebras of free holomorphic functions; Free analytic functional calculus and noncommutative Cauchy transforms; Weierstrass and Montel theorems for free holomorphic functions; Free pluriharmonic functions and noncommutative Poisson transforms; Hardy spaces of free holo…
In this paper, we study free pluriharmonic functions on noncommutative balls, and their boundary behavior. The main tools used in this study are certain noncommutative transforms which are introduced in the present paper and which generalize the classical transforms of Berezin, Poisson, Fantappie, Herglotz, and Cayley. Several classical results from complex analysis have free analogues in our noncommutative multivariable setting.
In an earlier paper we characterized NC analytic maps that send dimension-free matrix balls to dimension-free matrix balls and carry the boundary to the boundary; such maps we call "NC ball maps". In this paper we turn to a more general dimension-fr…
We define the Hardy spaces of free noncommutative functions on the noncommutative polydisc and the noncommutative ball and study their basic properties. Our technique combines the general methods of noncommutative function theory and asymptotic formulae for integration over the unitary group. The results are the first step in developing the general theory of free noncommutative bounded symmetric domains on the one hand and in studying the asymptotic free noncommutative analogues of classical spaces of analytic functions on the other.
Classically, Jensen's Inequality asserts that if $X$ is a compact convex set, and $f:K\to \mathbb{R}$ is a convex function, then for any probability measure $μ$ on $K$, that $f(\text{bar}(μ))\le \int f\;dμ$, where $\text{bar}(μ)$ is the barycenter of $μ$. Recently, Davidson and Kennedy proved a noncommutative ("nc") version of Jensen's inequality that applies to nc convex functions, which take matrix values, with probability measures replaced by ucp maps. In the classical case, if $f$ is only a separately convex function, then $f$ still satisfies the Jensen inequality for any probability measu…
In this paper we continue the study of free holomorphic functions on the unit ball of B(H)^n, where B(H) is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H. Several classical results from complex analysis have free analogues in our noncommutative setting.
In this paper we continue our investigation concerning the hyperbolic geometry on the noncommutative ball $[B(H)^n]_1^-$, where $B(H)$ is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H$, and its implications to noncommutative function theory. The central object is an intertwining operator $L_{B,A}$ of the minimal isometric dilations of $A, B\in [B(H)^n]_1^-$, which establishes a strong connection between noncommutative hyperbolic geometry on $[B(H)^n]_1^-$ and multivariable dilation theory. The goal of this paper is to study the operator $L_{B,A}$ and its connections to the …
We establish that particular quotients of the non-commutative Hardy algebras carry ergodic actions of convergent discrete subgroups of the group $\operatorname*{SU}(n,1)$ of automorphisms of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}% ^{n}$. To do so, we provide a mean to compute the spectra of quotients of noncommutative Hardy algebra and characterize their automorphisms in term of biholomorphic maps of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$.
In this paper, we study the structure of the fixed point sets of noncommutative self maps of the free ball. We show that for such a map that fixes the origin the fixed point set on every level is the intersection of the ball with a linear subspace. We provide an application for the completely isometric isomorphism problem of multiplier algebras of noncommutative complete Pick spaces.
In this expository paper we describe the study of certain non-self-adjoint operator algebras, the Hardy algebras, and their representation theory. We view these algebras as algebras of (operator valued) functions on their spaces of representations. We will show that these spaces of representations can be parameterized as unit balls of certain $W^{*}$-correspondences and the functions can be viewed as Schur class operator functions on these balls. We will provide evidence to show that the elements in these (non commutative) Hardy algebras behave very much like bounded analytic functions and the…
In the first part of this work we show how certain techniques from quantum information theory can be used in order to obtain very sharp embeddings between noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. Then, we use these estimates to study the classical capacity with restricted assisted entanglement of the quantum erasure channel and the quantum depolarizing channel. In particular, we exactly compute the capacity of the first one and we show that certain nonmultiplicative results hold for the second one.
We use compactifications of C*-algebras to introduce noncommutative coarse geometry. We transfer a noncommutative coarse structure on a C*-algebra with an action of a locally compact Abelian group by translations to Rieffel deformations and prove that the resulting noncommutative coarse spaces are coarsely equivalent. We construct a noncommutative coarse structure from a cocompact continuously square-integrable action of a group and show that this is coarsely equivalent to the standard coarse structure on the group in question. We define noncommutative coarse maps through certain completely po…
It is shown that for a map $f \colon X \to Y$ of compact spaces the unital $\ast$-homomorphism $C(f) \colon C(Y) \to C(X)$ is projective in the category $\operatorname{Mor}({\mathcal C}^{1})$ precisely when $X$ is a dendrite and $f$ is either homeomorphism or a constant.
This paper is an attempt to find large classes of noncommutative multivariable functions $g:Ω\subset [B(\cH)^n]_1^-\to B(\cH)^n$ for which a reasonable operator model theory and dilation theory can be developed for the noncommutative domain $g(Ω)$. In other words, we want to transfer the free analogue of Nagy-Foias theory from the unit ball $[B(\cH)^n]_1$ to other noncommutative domains, using appropriate maps.
Let $T\colon L^p({\mathcal M})\to L^p({\mathcal N})$ be a bounded operator between two noncommutative $L^p$-spaces, $1\leq p<\infty$. We say that $T$ is $\ell^1$-bounded (resp. $\ell^1$-contractive) if $T\otimes I_{\ell^1}$ extends to a bounded (resp. contractive) map from $L^p({\mathcal M};\ell^1)$ into $L^p({\mathcal N};\ell^1)$. We show that Yeadon's factorization theorem for $L^p$-isometries, $1\leq p\not=2 <\infty$, applies to an isometry $T\colon L^2({\mathcal M})\to L^2({\mathcal N})$ if and only if $T$ is $\ell^1$-contractive. We also show that a contractive operator $T\colon L^p({\mat…
We introduce and study holomorphically finitely generated (HFG) Fréchet algebras, which are analytic counterparts of affine (i.e., finitely generated) $\mathbb C$-algebras. Using a theorem of O. Forster, we prove that the category of commutative HFG algebras is anti-equivalent to the category of Stein spaces of finite embedding dimension. We also show that the class of HFG algebras is stable under some standard constructions. This enables us to give a series of concrete examples of HFG algebras, including Arens-Michael envelopes of affine algebras (such as the algebras of holomorphic functions…
We introduce a noncommutative analogue of the absolute value of a regular operator acting on a noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-space. We equally prove that two classical operator norms, the regular norm and the decomposable norm are identical. We also describe precisely the regular norm of several classes of regular multipliers. This includes Schur multipliers and Fourier multipliers on some unimodular locally compact groups which can be approximated by discrete groups in various senses. A main ingredient is to show the existence of a bounded projection from the space of completely bounded $\mat…
This is a continuation of the paper entitled "Free biholomorphic functions and operator model theory", in our attempt to transfer the free analogue of Nagy-Foias theory from the unit ball $[B(\cH)^n]_1$ to other noncommutative domains and varieties in $B(\cH)^n$, using appropriate maps. The present paper treats the completely non-coisometric case and the case of noncommutative varieties.
Operator-valued multivariable Bohr type inequalities are obtained for: a class of noncommutative holomorphic functions, generalizing the analytic functions on the open unit disc; the noncommutative disc algebra and the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra; a class of noncommutative selfadjoint harmonic functions, generalizing the real-valued harmonic functions on the open unit disc; Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras ; the reduced (resp.full) group C*-algebra of the free group with n generators; a class of analytic functions on the open unit ball of C^n. The classical Bohr inequality is shown to be a…
Let $1\leq p<\infty$ and let $T\colon L^p({\mathcal M})\to L^p({\mathcal N})$ be a bounded map between noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. If $T$ is bijective and separating (i.e., for any $x,y\in L^p({\mathcal M})$ such that $x^*y=xy^*=0$, we have $T(x)^*T(y)=T(x)T(y)^*=0$), we prove the existence of decompositions ${\mathcal M}={\mathcal M}_1\mathop{\oplus}\limits^\infty{\mathcal M}_2$, ${\mathcal N}={\mathcal N}_1 \mathop{\oplus}\limits^\infty{\mathcal N}_2$ and maps $T_1\colon L^p({\mathcal M}_1)\to L^p({\mathcal N}_1)$, $T_2\colon L^p({\mathcal M}_2)\to L^p({\mathcal N}_2)$, such that $T=T_1+T_2…
For any semifinite von Neumann algebra ${\mathcal M}$ and any $1\leq p<\infty$, we introduce a natutal $S^1$-valued noncommutative $L^p$-space $L^p({\mathcal M};S^1)$. We say that a bounded map $T\colon L^p({\mathcal M})\to L^p({\mathcal N})$ is $S^1$-bounded (resp. $S^1$-contractive) if $T\otimes I_{S^1}$ extends to a bounded (resp. contractive) map $T\overline{\otimes} I_{S^1}$ from $ L^p({\mathcal M};S^1)$ into $L^p({\mathcal N};S^1)$. We show that any completely positive map is $S^1$-bounded, with $\Vert T\overline{\otimes} I_{S^1}\Vert =\Vert T\Vert$. We use the above as a tool to investi…
We translate the concept of the join of topological spaces to the language of $C^*$-algebras, replace the $C^*$-algebra of functions on the interval $[0,1]$ with evaluation maps at $0$ and $1$ by a unital $C^*$-algebra $C$ with appropriate two surjections, and introduce the notion of the fusion of unital $C^*$-algebras. An appropriate modification of this construction yields the fusion comodule algebra of a comodule algebra $P$ with the coacting Hopf algebra $H$. We prove that, if the comodule algebra $P$ is principal, then so is the fusion comodule algebra. When $C=C([0,1])$ and the two surje…
Basic properties in Perron-Frobenius theory are strict positivity, primitivityand irreducibility. Whereas for nonnegative matrices, these properties are equivalent to elementary graph properties which can be checked in polynomial time, we show that for Kraus maps- the noncommutative generalization of stochastic matrices - checking strict positivity (whether the map sends the cone to its interior) is NP-hard. The proof proceeds by reducing to the latter problem the existence of a non-zero solution of a special system of bilinear equations. The complexity of irreducibility and primitivity is als…
We prove that to every connected Abelian subgroup $H$ of the biholomorphisms of the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$ we can associate a set of bounded symbols whose corresponding Toeplitz operators generate a commutative $C^*$-algebra on every weighted Bergman space. These symbols are of the form $a(z) = f(μ^H(z))$, where $μ^H$ is the moment map for the action of $H$ on $\mathbb{B}^n$. We show that, for this construction, if $H$ is a maximal Abelian subgroup, then the symbols introduced are precisely the $H$-invariant symbols. We provide the explicit computation of moment maps to obtain special sets o…
