It is conjectured that Stark states of excited hydrogen atom posses magnetic charge for which the quantum mechanical operator is $${\cal G}_{op} = {e\over \hbar} (\vecσ\cdot\vec A)$$ where $\vec A$ is the Runge-Lenz vector. The expectation value $g$ of this operator for Stark states is found to be $$ g = e(n_1-n_2)$$ which obeys a Dirac-Saha type quantization formula $${eg\over c} = (n_1-n_2)α$$ where $α$ is the fine structure constant and $n_1$ and $n_2$ are parabolic quantum numbers. An experimental arrangement is outlined to test this conjecture.
We obtained accurate resonances for the Stark effect in hydrogen by means of three independent methods. Two of them are based on complex rotation of the coordinates and diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix (CRLM and CRCH). The other one is based on the Riccati equations for the logarithmic derivatives of factors of the wavefunction (RPM). The latter approach enabled us to obtain the most accurate results and extremely sharp resonances.
Studies of atomic systems in electric fields are challenging because of the diverging perturbation series. However, physically meaningful Stark shifts and ionization rates can be found by analytical continuation of the series using appropriate branch cut functions. We apply this approach to low-dimensional hydrogen atoms in order to study the effects of reduced dimensionality. We find that modifications by the electric field are strongly suppressed in reduced dimensions. This finding is explained from a Landau-type analysis of the ionization process.
We show that the resonances of the Stark effect in hydrogen reported in Phys. Rev. A \textbf{88}, 022509 (2013) are considerably less accurate than the number of digits appear to suggest. In particular, the imaginary part of the lowest resonance is several orders of magnitude greater than it should be. We compare the results of that paper with those provided by the Riccati-Padé method, perturbation theory and an asymptotic expansion for the resonance width. The inaccuracy of those results can be traced back to the lack of precision in the calculation of the matrix elements of the secular equat…
We derive the expansion of the irregular physical solution over the spherical solutions at negative energies, which is necessary for obtaining the $S$ matrix of the process. The relation of this expansion to the theory developed by Giannakees et al., Phys. Rev. A 94, 013419 (2016), is analyzed. In particular, we show that the expansion of the irregular solution missing in Giannakees et al.'s theory can be derived from one of their main postulates. The expansion thus obtained turns out to be numerically equivalent to our expansion up to high angular momenta. Analytical expressions for the key m…
The second-order Stark effect for a planar Dirac one-electron atom in the ground state is analyzed within the framework of the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory, with the use of the Sturmian series expansion of the generalized Dirac-Coulomb Green function. A closed-form analytical expression for the static dipole polarizability of that system is found. The formula involves a generalized hypergeometric function ${}_{3}F_{2}$ with the unit argument. Numerical values of the polarizabilities for relativistic planar hydrogenic atoms with atomic numbers $1\leqslant Z\leqslant68$ are provided …
We study the entanglement properties of two three-level Rydberg atoms passing through a single-mode cavity. The interaction of an atom with the cavity field allows the atom to make a transition from the upper most (lower most) to the lower most (upper most) level by emission (absoprtion) of two photons via the middle level. We employ an effective Hamiltonian that describes the system with a Stark shifted two-photon atomic transition. We compute the entanglement of formation of the joint two-atom state as a function of Rabi angle $gt$. It is shown that the Stark shift can be used to enhance the…
We propose a robust scheme to generate single-photon Fock states and atom-photon and atom-atom entanglement in atom-cavity systems. We also present a scheme for quantum networking between two cavity nodes using an atomic channel. The mechanism is based on Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) and half-SCRAP processes in a microwave cavity. The engineering of these states depends on the design of the adiabatic dynamics through the static and dynamic Stark shifts.
In this paper the interaction between a two-level atom and a single-mode field in the $k$-photon Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) in the presence of Stark shift and Kerr medium is studied. All terms in the respected Hamiltonian, such as the single-mode field, its interaction with the atom, the contribution of the Stark shift and the Kerr medium effects are considered to be $f$-deformed. In particular, the effect of the initial state of radiation field on the dynamical evolution of some physical properties such as atomic inversion and entropy squeezing are investigated by considering different initi…
An exact analytic solution for two two-level atoms coupled with a multi-photon single-mode electromagnetic cavity field in the presence of the Stark shift is derived. We assume that the field is initially prepared in a coherent state and the two atoms are initially prepared in an excited state. Considering the atomic level shifts generated by the Stark shift effect, the dynamical behavior of both quantum coherence (QC) measured using a quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence and of quantum correlations captured by quantum discord (QD) are investigated. It is shown that the intensity-dependent Stark-…
We will study the splitting in the energy spectrum of the hydrogen atom subjected to a uniform electric field (Stark effect) with the Heisenberg algebra deformed leading to the minimum length. We will use the perturbation theory for cases not degenerate ($n=1$) and degenerate ($n=2$), along with known results of corrections in these levels caused by the minimum length applied purely to the hydrogen atom, so that we may find and estimate the corrections of minimum length applied to the Stark effect.
Generalized with respect to the Stark interaction of atoms with a vacuum field of zero photon density, Dicke's model is used to describe the Raman superradiance of a localized ensemble of identical atoms in a coherent non-resonant light wave. It is shown that at a certain critical number of atoms in the ensemble the stabilization effect of the excited state of the ensemble relative to collective atomic decay is possible, with superradiance of the atomic ensemble being suppressed. When the number of atoms is close to the critical value, superradiance exhibits features that are opposite to the e…
We propose a theoretical scheme to achieve strong photon blockade via a single atom in cavity. By utilizing optical Stark shift, the dressed-state splitting between higher and lower branches is enhanced, which results in significant increasing for lower (higher) branch and decreasing for higher (lower) branch at the negative (positive) Stark shift, and dominates the time-evolution of photon number oscillations as well. Furthermore, the two-photon excitation is suppressed via quantum interference under optimal phase and Rabi frequency of an external microwave field. It is shown that the interpl…
We propose schemes of controlled-Z and controlled-NOT gates with ultracold neutral atoms based on deterministic phase accumulation during double adiabatic passage of the Stark-tuned Förster resonance of Rydberg states. The effect of deterministic phase accumulation during double adiabatic passage in a two-level quantum system has been analyzed in detail. Adiabatic rapid passage using nonlinearly chirped pulses with rectangle intensity profile has been discussed. Nonlinear time dependence of the energy detuning from the Förster resonance is used to achieve a high fidelity of population transfer…
The results obtained by Pauli, in his 1926 article on the hydrogen atom, made essential use of the dynamical so(4) symmetry of the bound states. Pauli used this symmetry to compute the perturbed energy levels of an hydrogen atom in a uniform electric field (Stark effect) and in uniform electric and magnetic fields. Although the experimental check of the single Stark effect on the hydrogen atom has been studied experimentally, Pauli's results in mixed fields have been studied only for Rydberg states of rubidium atoms in crossedfields and lithium atoms in parallel fields.
Entangled state, as an essential tool in quantum information processing, may be generated through the interaction between light and matter in cavity quantum electrodynamics. In this paper, we study the interaction between two two-level atoms and a two-mode field in an optical cavity enclosed by a medium with Kerr nonlinearity in the presence of detuning parameter and Stark effect. It is assumed that atom-field coupling and third-order susceptibility of the Kerr medium depend on the intensity of light. In order to investigate the dynamics of the introduced system, we obtain the exact analytical…
A quantum state light-storage, using a virtual magnetic field through the ac Stark effect is proposed to combine the high overall storage efficiency and large bandwidth employing room temperature atomic vapor. In this approach, which was called the ac Stark Gradient Echo Memory (ASGEM), it has been shown the possibility to employ about a nanosecond ac Stark pulse far detuned (about 127 THz) from D1 line of rubidium and create an atomic media with the possibility to store a photon with about a GHz bandwidth with storage and retrieval efficiency of more than 90%. A contour plot of efficiency as …
We show that, under certain conditions, the micromaser can act as an effective source of highly correlated atoms. It is possible to create an extended robust entanglement between two successive, initially unentangled atoms passing through a cavity filled with with a nonlinear medium taking into consideration a slight level shift. Information is transfered from the cavity to the atoms in order to build up entanglement. The scheme has an advantage over conventional creation of entanglement if the two atoms (qubits) are so far apart that a direct interaction is difficult to achieve. The interacti…
Cold atoms in highly excited Rydberg states are promising candidates to implement quantum logic gates of a quantum computer via long-range dipole-dipole interaction. Two-qubit gates require a controlled interaction of only two close Rydberg atoms. We report on the first spectroscopic observation of the resonant dipole-dipole interaction between two cold rubidium Rydberg atoms confined in a small laser excitation volume. The interaction strength was controlled by fine-tuning of the Rydberg levels into a Forster resonance using the Stark effect. The observed resonance line shapes are in good agr…
We present an experimental proposal to achieve a strong photon blockade by employing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with single alkaline-earth-metal atom trapped in an optical cavity. In the presence of optical Stark shift, both second-order correlation function and cavity transmission exhibit asymmetric structures between the red and blue sidebands of the cavity. For a weak control field, the photon quantum statistics for the coherent transparency window (i.e. atomic quasi-dark state resonance) are insensitive to the Stark shift, which should also be immune to the spontaneous …
In this paper we study the dynamics in the general case for a Tavis Cummings atom in a non-uniform cavity. In addition to the dynamical Stark shift, the center-of-mass motion of the atom and the recoil effect are considered in both - the weak and the strong cavity atom coupling regimes. It is shown that the spatial motion of the atom inside the cavity in the resonant case leads to a transition between topologically different solutions. This effect is manifested by a singularity in the inter-level transition spectrum. In the non-resonant case, the spatial motion of the atom leads to a switching…
The old quantum theory and Schrödinger's wave mechanics (and other forms of quantum mechanics) give the same results for the line splittings in the first-order Stark effect in hydrogen, the leading terms in the splitting of the spectral lines emitted by a hydrogen atom in an external electric field. We examine the account of the effect in the old quantum theory, which was hailed as a major success of that theory, from the point of view of wave mechanics. First, we show how the new quantum mechanics solves a fundamental problem one runs into in the old quantum theory with the Stark effect. It t…
In the present work, the effect of AC-Stark shift (i.e. light-shift) in optical dipole trap on in-situ absorption probe imaging of the trapped atoms has been investigated. We have calculated the light-shift of various energy levels of $^{87}$Rb atoms relevant for trapping in an optical dipole trap (ODT). The spatial varying intensity of the ODT beam results in position dependent light-shift (i.e. AC-Stark shift). Such modifications in the energy levels of the atom result in modification in the absorption cross-section, which finally modifies the optical density (OD) in in-situ absorption imagi…
The dynamic Stark shift of a high-lying atom in a system of Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) of photons is discussed within the framework of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory. It is found that the Stark shift of an atom in BEC of photons is modified by a temperature dependent factor, compared to that in a normal two-dimensional photonic fluid. In photonic BEC, the value of Stark shift is always greater than that in two-dimensional free space. Physical origin of the phenomenon is presented and potential application is also discussed.
We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate held in a quasi-one-dimensional Wannier-Stark lattice which is a combination of linear potential with an accelerated optical lattice. It is demonstrated that the system can be reduced to a periodically driven Gross-Pitaevskii one, in which we find the first exact analytical solution and the regular and chaotic numerical solutions with accelerated atomic flow densities. The results suggest an experimental scheme for generating and controlling the accelerating regular and chaotic matter-waves.
Results of numerical Monte Carlo simulations for the Stark-tuned Förster resonance and dipole blockade between two to five cold rubidium Rydberg atoms in various spatial configurations are presented. The effects of the atoms' spatial uncertainties on the resonance amplitude and spectra are investigated. The feasibility of observing coherent Rabi-like population oscillations at a Förster resonance between two cold Rydberg atoms is analyzed. Spectra and the fidelity of the Rydberg dipole blockade are calculated for various experimental conditions, including nonzero detuning from the Förster reso…
We present a scheme to realise the basic two-quibit logic gates such as quantum phase gate and controlle-NOT gate using a detuned optical cavity interacting with a three-level Raman system. We discuss the role of Stark shifts which are as important as the terms leading to two-photon transition. The operation of the proposed logic gates involves metastable states of the atom and hence is not affected by spontaneous emission. These ideas can be extended to produce multiparticle entanglement.
We propose a quantum memory for light that is analogous to the NMR gradient echo. Our proposal is ideally perfectly efficient and provides simplifications to current 3-level quantum memory schemes based on controlled inhomogeneous broadening. Our scheme does not require auxiliary light fields. Instead the input optical pulse interacts only with two-level atoms that have linearly increasing Stark shifts. By simply reversing the sign of the atomic Stark shifts, the pulse is retrieved in the forward direction. We present analytical, numerical and experimental results of this scheme. We report exp…
In this paper, the off-diagonal geometric phase of thermal state in hydrogen atom under the effects of external magnetic field is considered. Increasing temperature tends to suppress the off-diagonal geometric phase, including 1-order and 2-order cases. On the other hand, the relationship between the geometric phase and external magnetic field is discussed.
We study the energy spectrum of atoms trapped in a vertical 1D optical lattice in close proximity to a reflective surface. We propose an effective model to describe the interaction between the atoms and the surface at any distance. Our model includes the long-range Casimir-Polder potential together with a short-range Lennard-Jones potential, which are considered non-perturbatively with respect to the optical lattice potential. We find an intricate energy spectrum which contains a pair of loosely-bound states localized close to the surface in addition to a surface-modified Wannier-Stark ladder …
The burgeoning fields of quantum computing and quantum key distribution have created a demand for a quantum memory. The gradient echo memory scheme is a quantum memory candidate for light storage that can boast efficiencies approaching unity, as well as the flexibility to work with either two or three level atoms. The key to this scheme is the frequency gradient that is placed across the memory. Currently the three level implementation uses a Zeeman gradient and warm atoms. In this paper we model a new gradient creation mechanism - the ac Stark effect - to provide an improvement in the flexibi…

We consider the resummation of the perturbation series describing the energy displacement of a hydrogenic bound state in an electric field (known as the Stark effect or the LoSurdo-Stark effect), which constitutes a divergent formal power series in the electric field strength. The perturbation series exhibits a rich singularity structure in the Borel plane. Resummation methods are presented which appear to lead to consistent results even in problematic cases where isolated singularities or branch cuts are present on the positive and negative real axis in the Borel plane. Two resummation prescr…
We evaluate the polarizabilities of the 5p_{1/2}, 6s, 6p_{1/2}, and 6p_{3/2} states of In using two different high-precision relativistic methods: linearized coupled-cluster approach where single, double and partial triple excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave function are included to all orders of perturbation theory and an approach that combines the configuration interaction and the coupled-cluster method. Extensive comparison of the accuracy of these methods is carried out. The uncertainties of all recommended values are evaluated. Our result for the 6s-5p_{1/2} Stark shift is in excellent agr…
We bring the set of linear quantum operations, important for many fundamental studies in photonic systems, to the material domain of collective excitations known as spin waves. Using the ac Stark effect we realize quantum operations on single excitations and demonstrate a spin-wave analogue of Hong-Ou-Mandel effect, realized via a beamsplitter implemented in the spin wave domain. Our scheme equips atomic-ensemble-based quantum repeaters with quantum information processing capability and can be readily brought to other physical systems, such as doped crystals or room-temperature atomic ensemble…
We propose a combination of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT)/Raman and pulsed spectroscopy techniques to accurately cancel frequency shifts arising from EIT fields in forbidden optical lattice clock transitions of alkaline earth atoms. Time-separated laser pulses are designed to trap atoms in coherent superpositions while eliminating off-resonance ac Stark contributions at particular laser detunings from the intermediate excited state. The scheme achieves efficient population transfer up to 60% with potential inaccuracy $<$ $10^{-17}$. Cancellation of external light shifts determ…
The order dependent mapping method, its convergence has recently been proven for the energy eigenvalue of the anharmonic oscillator, is applied to re-sum the standard perturbation series for Stark effect of the hydrogen atom. We perform a numerical experiment up to the fiftieth order of the perturbation expansion. A simple mapping suggested by the analytic structure and the strong field behavior gives an excellent agreement with the exact value for an intermediate range of the electric field, $0.03\leq E\leq0.25$. The imaginary part of the energy (the decay width) as well as the real part of t…
Using optical Ramsey interferometry, we precisely measure the laser-induced AC-stark shift on the $S_{1/2}$ -- $D_{5/2}$ "quantum bit" transition near 729 nm in a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion. We cancel this shift using an additional laser field. This technique is of particular importance for the implementation of quantum information processing with cold trapped ions. As a simple application we measure the atomic phase evolution during a $n \times 2π$ rotation of the quantum bit.
We study the hydrogen atom eigenstate energy and wave function in the Rindler space. The probability distribution is tilted because the electric field of the nucleus is no longer spherically symmetric. The hydrogen atom therefore cannot be treated exactly in the same way as what it is in an inertial frame. We also find that if the external force accelerates only the nucleus and then the nucleus accelerates its surrounding electrons through electromagnetic force, the electrons can tunnel through the local energy gap and split the hydrogen atom into an ion. This is similar to what one expects fr…
We derive the wave function for N-dimensional hydrogen atom in the momentum representation with the phase factor using the generating function method and Hankel's integral.
