We calculate the bulk viscosity of the massive pion gas within Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory. We obtain a low temperature peak arising from explicit conformal breaking due to the pion mass and another peak near the critical temperature, dominated by the conformal anomaly through gluon condensate terms. The correlation between bulk viscosity and conformal breaking supports a recent QCD proposal. We discuss the role of resonances, heavier states and large-$N_c$ counting.
We compute the bulk viscosity of a gas of pions at temperatures below the QCD crossover temperature, for the physical value of pion mass, to lowest order in chiral perturbation theory. Bulk viscosity is controlled by number-changing processes which become exponentially slow at low temperatures when the pions become exponentially dilute, leading to an exponentially large bulk viscosity zeta ~ (F_0^8/m_π^5) exp(2m_π/T), where F_0 = 93 MeV is the pion decay constant.
The shear viscosity of an interacting pion gas is studied using the Kubo formalism as a microscopic description of thermal systems close to global equilibrium. We implement the skeleton expansion in order to approximate the retarded correlator of the viscous part of the energy-momentum tensor. After exploring this in $gϕ^4$ theory we show how the skeleton expansion can be consistently applied to pions in chiral perturbation theory. The shear viscosity $η$ is determined by the spectral width, or equivalently, the mean free path of pions in the heat bath. We derive a new analytical result for th…
We evaluate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in a pion gas employing the Uehling-Uehlenbeck equation and experimental phase-shifts parameterized by means of the SU(2) Inverse Amplitude Method. We find that the ratio for this monocomponent gas stays well above the KSS 1/(4 pi) bound. We find similar results with other sets of phase shifts and conclude the bound is nowhere violated.
We discuss a connection between axial anomaly and polarized radiative processes. By comparison with the corresponding unpolarized cases, we consider some physical outputs for the $π^+$ and $Z^0$ polarized radiative decays. We analyse in detail the pattern of mass singularity cancellation.
By using Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation we compute the viscosity of a pion gas, in the low temperature and low density regime, in terms of the temperature, and the pion fugacity. The viscosity turns out to be proportional to the squared root of the temperature over the pion mass. Next to leading corrections are proportional to the temperature over the pion mass to the 3/2.
The pion-photon transition form factor is studied by employing two types of Sum Rules: Light Cone Sum Rules (LCSR) and Anomaly Sum Rules (ASR). By comparing the predictions for the pion-photon transition form factor, obtained from these two approaches, the applicability limit of the LCSRs at low momenta is determined. Reciprocally, the ASR threshold dependence on the momentum was extracted using our LCSR-based method in combination with two different types of pion distribution amplitudes and found that at higher Q2 it approaches a constant.
We briefly report a calculation of the viscosity of a pion gas at finite temperature and chemical potential using three different models for the pion-pion interaction. The results for the Inverse Amplitude Method interpolation yield a viscosity of order (m_pi^3) up to temperatures of order m_pi. The calculation is performed within the kinetic theory of gases, by approximately solving the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation with relativistic kinematics.
We have calculated the shear viscosity of pion medium, where propagating pion has some finite thermal width due to interaction with the low mass resonances, $σ$ and $ρ$. With the help of standard thermal field theoretical technique, the thermal width of the pion has been calculated from the pion self-energy diagram for $πσ$ and $πρ$ loops, where an effective Lagrangian density has been used for interaction part. We have found a very small value of shear viscosity by entropy density ratio ($η/s$), which is very close to the KSS bound.
We review or main results concerning the transport coefficients of a light meson gas, in particular we focus on the case of a massive pion gas. Leading order results according to the chiral power-counting are presented for the DC electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, shear viscosity, and bulk viscosity. We also comment on the possible correlation between the bulk viscosity and the trace anomaly in QCD, as well as the relation between unitarity and a minimum of the quotient $η/s$ near the phase transition.
Within renormalizable theories the triangle diagram correctly reproduces the lifetime of the neutral pion $π^0$. However, effective relativistic quark models which contain a second scale besides the quark mass seem unable to give the correct value for this quantity. In the Instanton Liquid Model this second scale is the mean instanton radius, in the NJL model it is the cutoff. The role of the cutoff within a path integral derivation of the chiral anomaly is clarified and the importance of higher order terms contributing to the $π^0$ decay width and other anomalous processes is pointed out.

We have evaluated the shear viscosity of pion gas taking into account its scattering with the low mass resonances, $σ$ and $ρ$ during propagation in the medium. The thermal width (or collisional rate) of the pions is calculated from $πσ$ and $πρ$ loop diagrams using effective interactions in the real time formulation of finite temperature field theory. A very small value of shear viscosity by entropy density ratio ($η/s$), close to the KSS bound, is obtained which approximately matches the range of values of $η/s$ used by Niemi et al. \cite{Niemi} in order to fit the RHIC data of elliptic flow…
Using chiral perturbation theory we investigate the QCD shear viscosity ($η$) to entropy density ($s$) ratio below the deconfinement temperature ($\sim 170$ MeV) with zero baryon number density. It is found that $η/s$ of QCD is monotonically decreasing in temperature ($T$) and reaches 0.6 with estimated $\sim 50%$ uncertainty at T=120 MeV. A naive extrapolation of the leading order result shows that $η/s$ reaches the $1/4π$ minimum bound proposed by Kovtun, Son, and Starinets using string theory methods at $T\sim 210$ MeV. This suggests a phase transition or cross over might occur at $T\lesssi…
We report a calculation of the shear viscosity in a relativistic multicomponent meson gas as a function of temperature and chemical potentials. We approximately solve the Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport equation of kinetic theory, appropriate for a boson gas, with relativistic kinematics. Since at low temperatures the gas can be taken as mostly composed of pions, with a fraction of kaons and etas, we explore the region where binary elastic collisions with at least one pion are the dominant scattering processes. Our input meson scattering phase shifts are fits to the experimental data obtained from…
In the real-time thermal field theory, the standard expression of shear viscosity for the nucleonic constituents is derived from the two point function of nucleonic viscous stress tensors at finite temperature and density. The finite thermal width or Landau damping is traditionally included in the nucleon propagators. This thermal width is calculated from the in-medium self-energy of nucleon for different possible pion-baryon loops. The dynamical part of nucleon-pion-baryon interactions are taken care by the effective Lagrangian densities of standard hadronic model. The shear viscosity to entr…
We have calculated the shear viscosity coefficient $η$ of the strongly interacting matter in the relaxation time approximation, where a quasi particle description of quarks with its dynamical mass is considered from NJL model. Due to the thermodynamic scattering of quarks with pseudo scalar type condensate (i.e. pion), a non zero Landau damping will be acquired by the propagating quarks. This Landau damping may be obtained from the Landau cut contribution of the in-medium self-energy of quark-pion loop, which is evaluated in the framework of real-time thermal field theory.
Owing to the Kubo relation, the shear viscosities of pionic and nucleonic components have been evaluated from their corresponding retarded correlators of viscous stress tensor in the static limit, which become non-divergent only for the non-zero thermal widths of the constituent particles. In the real-time thermal field theory, the pion and nucleon thermal widths have respectively been obtained from the pion self-energy for different meson, baryon loops and the nucleon self-energy for different pion-baryon loops. We have found a non-monotonic momentum distributions of pion and nucleon thermal …
This thesis investigates the Hadronic Light by Light (HLL) scattering contribution to the muon $g-2$, which is one of the most important low energy hadronic effects and consists mainly of the quark loop, the pion pole and the charged pion and kaon loops. In this work the charged pion loop has been investigated more closely. After reviewing the subject a preliminary introduction to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT), Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model and the full Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) model is given, and they are used to calculate the pion loop HLL scattering contribution to the muon anom…
We study the visible photon production from the viscous dissipation of the dark matter (DM) fluid. The visible photon production depends on the magnitude of the dark matter viscosity and becomes important at the late times. We argue that for sufficiently large dark matter viscosity, the number of the resonantly converted visible photons becomes large which populates the Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) tails of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. Consequently, these excess visible photons possibly can explain the reported EDGES anomaly in the 21 cm signal. Further, we explore the parameter spa…
We investigate the shear viscosity of a pion gas in relativistic kinetic theory, using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to construct the pion mass and the pi-pi interaction at finite temperature. Whereas at low temperatures the scattering properties and, hence, the viscosity are in agreement with lowest-order chiral perturbation theory, we find strong medium modifications in the crossover region. Here the system is strongly coupled and the scattering lengths diverge, similarly as for ultra-cold Fermi gases at a Feshbach resonance. As a consequence, the ratio eta/s is found to be strongly reduced a…
We have calculated microscopically bulk viscosity of hadronic matter, where equilibrium thermodynamics for all hadrons in medium are described by Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model. Considering pions and nucleons as abundant medium constituents, we have calculated their thermal widths, which inversely control the strength of bulk viscosities for respective components and represent their in-medium scattering probabilities with other mesonic and baryonic resonances, present in the medium. Our calculations show that bulk viscosity increases with both temperature and baryon chemical potential, where…
The space-time evolution of the (1+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics with an initial quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is studied numerically. The particle-emitting sources undergo a crossover transition from the QGP to hadronic gas. We take into account a usual shear viscosity for the strongly coupled QGP as well as the bulk viscosity which increases significantly in the crossover region. The two-pion Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry for the viscous hydrodynamic sources is performed. The HBT analyses indicate that the viscosity effect on th…
In this letter, we address the question of whether the almost four standard deviations difference between theory and experiment for the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ$ can be explained as a higher-order Standard Model perturbation effect in the pion form factor measurements. This question has, until now, remained open, obscuring the source of discrepancies between the measurements. We calculate the last radiative corrections for the extraction of the pion form factor, which were believed to be potentially substantial enough to explain the data within the Standard Model. We find that the c…
The contribution of axial anomaly to charge symmetry breaking in pion-nucleon coupling constants is calculated within instanton model for QCD vacuum. It has been demonstrated that the contribution is large and allows to explain Nolen-Schiffer anomaly.
We explore the link between the chiral symmetry of QCD and the numerical results of the light-front quark model, analyzing both the two-point and three-point functions of the pion. Including the axial-vector coupling as well as the pseudoscalar coupling in the light-front quark model, we discuss the implication of the chiral anomaly in describing the pion decay constant, the pion-photon transition form factor and the electromagnetic form factor of the pion. In constraining the model parameters, we find that the chiral anomaly plays a critical role and the analysis of $F_{πγ}(Q^2)$ in timelike …
In the hadronic phase, the dominant configuration of QCD with two flavors of massless quarks is a gas of massless pions. We calculate the bulk viscosity (zeta) using the Boltzmann equation with the kinetic theory generalized to incorporate the trace anomaly. We find that the dimensionless ratio zeta/s, s being the entropy density, is monotonic increasing below T=120 MeV, where chiral perturbation theory is applicable. This, combined with previous results, shows that zeta/s reaches its maximum near the phase transition temperature Tc, while eta/s, eta being the shear viscosity, reaches its mini…
The problem of $γπ\to ππ$ is studied using the axial anomaly, elastic unitarity, analyticity and crossing symmetry. The solution of the integral equation for this amplitude is given by an iteration procedure. The final solution disagrees with vector meson dominance models.
Recently, we developed an effective theory of pions and a light dilatonic meson for gauge theories with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry that are close to the conformal window. The pion mass term in this effective theory depends on an exponent $y$. We derive the transformation properties under dilatations of the renormalized fermion mass, and use this to rederive $y=3-γ_m^*$, where $γ_m^*$ is fixed-point value of the mass anomalous dimension at the sill of the conformal window. This value for $y$ is consistent with the trace anomaly of the underlying near-conformal gauge theory.
We introduce the concept of viscosity (both shear and bulk) in the context of hadron physics and in particular the meson gas, highlighting the current theoretical efforts to connect possible measurements of the viscosities to underlying physics such as a phase transition or the trace anomaly.
We show how a spontaneously broken gauge theory of fermions endowed with a composite scalar multiplet becomes naturally anomaly-free, and yet describes the correct couplings of the pion to two gauge fields and to leptons: the first coupling is the same as computed from the chiral anomaly, and the second identical with that obtained from the `Partially Conserved Axial Current' hypothesis. For the sake of simplicity, we only study here the abelian case.
We investigate the effects of baryon chemical potential μon the shear viscosity coefficient ηand the viscosity to entropy density ratio η/s of a pion-nucleon gas mixture. We find that ηis an increasing function of T and μ, while the ratio η/s turns to a decreasing function in a wide region of T-μplane. In the kinematical region we studied, the smallest value of η/s is about 0.3.
We study the QCD vacuum structure under the influence of an electromagnetic field with a nonzero second Lorentz invariant $I_2=\vec{E}\cdot{\vec B}$. We show that the presence of $I_2$ can induce neutral pion ($π^0$) condensation in the QCD vacuum through the electromagnetic triangle anomaly. Within the frameworks of chiral perturbation theory at leading small-momenta expansion as well as the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at leading $1/N_c$ expansion, we quantify the dependence of the $π^0$ condensate on $I_2$. The stability of the $π^0$-condensed vacuum against the Schwinger charged pair producti…
We show that quantum chiral anomaly of QCD in magnetic backgrounds induces a novel structure of electric charge inside baryons. To illustrate the anomaly effect, we employ the Skyrme model for baryons, with the anomaly-induced gauged Wess-Zumino term (π_0 + (multi-pion)) E_i B_i. Due to this term, the Skyrmions giving a local pion condensation ((π_0 + (multi-pion)) \neq 0) necessarily become a local charge source, in the background magnetic field B_i. We present detailed evaluation of the anomaly effects, and calculate the total induced charge, for various baryons in the magnetic field.
We investigate decay and production of neutral pions in strong magnetic fields. In the presence of strong magnetic fields, transition between a neutral pion and a virtual photon becomes possible through the triangle diagram relevant for the chiral anomaly. We find that the decay mode of a neutral pion into two photons cannot persist in the dominant mode in strong magnetic fields, and that decay into a dilepton instead dominates over the other modes. We also investigate the effects of magnetic fields on prompt virtual photons created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. There is no anisot…
We derive the pseudoscalar condensate induced by anomaly and vorticity from the Wigner function for massive fermions in homogeneous electromagnetic fields. It has an anomaly term and a force-vorticity coupling term. As a mass effect, the pseudoscalar condensate is linearly proportional to the fermion mass in small mass expansion. By a generalization to two-flavor and three-flavor cases, the neutral pion and eta meson condensates are calculated from the Wigner function and have anomaly parts as well as force-vorticity parts, in which the anomaly part of the neutral pion condensate is consistent…
We study the bulk viscosity of a pion gas in unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory at low and moderate temperatures, below any phase transition to a quark-gluon plasma phase. We argue that inelastic processes are irrelevant and exponentially suppressed at low temperatures. Since the system falls out of chemical equilibrium upon expansion,a pion chemical potential must be introduced, so we extend the existing theory to include it. We control the zero modes of the collision operator and Landau's conditions of fit when solving the Boltzmann equation with the elastic collision kernel. The dependen…
We perform a lattice QCD calculation of the π^0\toγγtransition form factor and the associated decay width. We use a Euclidean time integral of the relevant three-point function to compute the decay amplitude for two-photon final state, which is a non-QCD state. We use the all-to-all quark propagator technique to carry out this integral as well as to include the disconnected quark diagram contributions. We execute the calculation using the overlap fermion formulation, which ensures the exact chiral symmetry on the lattice and produces the chiral anomaly through the Jacobian of the chiral transf…
Speed of sound and trace anomaly in a unified treatment of the two-color diquark superfluid, the pion-condensed high-isospin matter, and the 2SC quark matter
A fundamental property of QCD is the presence of the chiral anomaly, which is the primary component of the $π^0\rightarrowγγ$ decay amplitude. Based on this anomaly and its small ($\simeq$ 4.5%) chiral correction, a firm prediction of the $π^0$ lifetime can be used as a test of QCD at confinement scale energies. The interesting experimental and theoretical histories of the $π^0$ meson are reviewed, from discovery to the present era. Experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical prediction, within the current ($\simeq$ 3%) experimental error; however, they are not yet sufficiently …
We discuss characteristic experimental signatures related to the formation of domains of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) triggered by the axial anomaly in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We predict that the enhancement of the fraction of neutral pions compared to all pions depends on the angle of emission with respect to the scattering plane and is concentrated at small transverse momentum and small rapidity in the center-of-mass frame. The anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane is also observable in the inclusive photon distribution.
The success of the Adler-Bell-Jackiw(ABJ) chiral anomaly prediction for $π^{0}\to γγ$ decay rate shows that non-anomaly terms would make a negligible contribution to the decay rate, in agreement with the Sutherland-Veltman theorem. Thus the conventional $q\bar{q}$ bound-state description of the pion could not be valid since it would produce a $π^{0}\to γγ$ decay amplitude not suppressed in the soft pion limit, in contradiction with the Sutherland-Veltman theorem. Therefore, if the pion is to be treated as a $q\bar{q}$ bound state, this bound state would be a longitudinal axial-vector meson. In…
In this paper, we consider finite isospin chiral perturbation theory including the effects of the axial anomaly (through the Wess-Zumino-Witten term) in a strong magnetic field. We firstly prove that in a strong external magnetic field ($H_{\rm ext}$) or more precisely the Schwinger limit, where photon back-reactions are suppressed, only neutral pions can condense and the condensation of charged pions is forbidden. Secondly, we find that the $π^{0}$ domain wall is an example of a phase that can exist in a strong magnetic field and suggest the existence of a new phase transition line from the n…
The $γ^* π^0 \rightarrow γ$ form factor, including the extension off the pion mass-shell, is obtained from a generalized impulse approximation within a QCD-based model field theory known to provide an excellent description of the pion charge form factor. This approach implements dressing of the vertex functions and propagators consistent with dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, gauge invariance, quark confinement and perturbative QCD. Soft nonperturbative behavior, dictated by the axial anomaly, is found to evolve to the perturbative QCD limit only for \mbox{$Q^2 \geq 20~{\rm GeV}^2$}.
It was previously shown within chiral perturbation theory that the ground state of QCD in a sufficiently large magnetic field and at nonvanishing, but not too large, baryon chemical potential is a so-called chiral soliton lattice. The crucial ingredient of this observation was the chiral anomaly in the form of a Wess-Zumino-Witten term, which couples the baryon chemical potential to the magnetic field and the gradient of the neutral pion field. It was also shown that the chiral soliton lattice becomes unstable towards charged pion condensation at larger magnetic fields. We point out that this …
We show that in fully-self-consistent treatments of the pion; namely, its static properties and elastic and transition form factors, the asymptotic limit of the product Q^2 G_{γ* γπ^0}(Q^2), determined a priori by the interaction employed, is not exceeded at any finite value of spacelike momentum transfer. Furthermore, in such a treatment of a vector-vector contact-interaction one obtains a γ* γ-> π^0 transition form factor that disagrees markedly with all available data. We explain that the contact interaction produces a pion distribution amplitude which is flat and nonvanishing at the endpoi…

In this work, we show the dependence of bulk viscosity on Polyakov loop in 3+1 dimensional topologically massive model (TMM). This model contains equally massive non-Abelian gauge fields without spontaneous symmetry breaking. In earlier works, the bulk viscosity was found from the trace anomaly in massless $ϕ^4$ model and Yang-Mills (YM) theory and its dependence on the quantum corrections was established. In TMM, the trace anomaly is absent due to the presence of kinetic term of a two-form field $B$ in the action. This model also provides the dependence of bulk viscosity on the mass of the ga…
A calculation of the bulk viscosity for the massive Gross-Neveu model at zero fermion chemical potential is presented in the large-$N$ limit. This model resembles QCD in many important aspects: it is asymptotically free, has a dynamically generated mass gap, and for zero bare fermion mass it is scale invariant at the classical level (broken through the trace anomaly at the quantum level). For our purposes, the introduction of a bare fermion mass is necessary to break the integrability of the model, and thus to be able to study momentum transport. The main motivation is, by decreasing the bare …
