We investigated the series of temperature and field-driven transitions in LuFe$_2$O$_4$ by optical and Mössbauer spectroscopies, magnetization, and x-ray scattering in order to understand the interplay between charge, structure, and magnetism in this multiferroic material. We demonstrate that charge fluctuation has an onset well below the charge ordering transition, supporting the "order by fluctuation" mechanism for the development of charge order superstructure. Bragg splitting and large magneto optical contrast suggest a low temperature monoclinic distortion that can be driven by both temperature and magnetic field.
We present single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements on multiferroic LuFe2O4 showing phase transitions at 240 and 175 K. Magnetic reflections are observed below each transition indicating that the magnetic interactions in LuFe2O4 are 3-dimensional (3D) in character. The magnetic structure is refined as a ferrimagnetic spin configuration below the 240 K transition. While 3D magnetic correlations persists below 175 K, a significant broadening of the magnetic peaks is observed along with the build up of a diffuse component to the magnetic scattering.
LuFe2O4 exhibits multiferroicity due to charge order on a frustrated triangular lattice. We find that the magnetization of LuFe2O4 in the multiferroic state can be electrically controlled by applying voltage pulses. Depending on with or without magnetic fields, the magnetization can be electrically switched up or down. We have excluded thermal heating effect and attributed this electrical control of magnetization to an intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in response to the electrical breakdown of charge ordering. Our findings open up a new route toward electrical control of magnetization.
Using neutron diffraction, we have studied the magnetic field effect on charge structures in the charge-ordered multiferroic material LuFe$_2$O$_4$. An external magnetic field is able to change the magnitude and correlation lengths of the charge valence order even before the magnetic order sets in. This affects the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the material and induces a giant magneto-electric effect. Our results suggest that the magneto-electric coupling in LuFe$_2$O$_4$ is likely due to magnetic field effect on local spins, in clear contrast to the case in most other known multi…
From the measurement of dielectric, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties we observe simultaneous ferroelectric and magnetic transitions around $\sim$600 K in orthorhombic LuFeO$_3$. We also observe suppression of the remanent polarization by $\sim$95\% under a magnetic field of $\sim$15 kOe at room temperature. The extent of suppression of the polarization under magnetic field increases monotonically with the field. These results show that even the orthorhombic LuFeO$_3$ is a room temperature multiferroic of type-II variety exhibiting quite a strong coupling between magnetization and polariz…
Neutron diffraction measurements on multiferroic LuFe2O4 show changes in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure characterized by wavevector q = (1/3 1/3 1/2) as a function of electric field cooling procedures. The increase of intensity from all magnetic domains and the decrease in the 2D magnetic order observed below the Neel temperature are indicative of increased ferroelectric charge order. The AFM order changes the dynamics of the CO state, and stabilizes it. It is determined that the increase in electric polarization observed at the magnetic ordering temperature is due to a transition from …
Geometrical frustration of the Fe ions in LuFe2O4 leads to intricate charge and magnetic order and a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Using resonant x-ray diffraction at the Fe K edge, the anomalous scattering factors of both Fe sites are deduced from the (h/3 k/3 l/2) reflections. The chemical shift between the two types of Fe ions equals 4.0(1) eV corresponding to full charge separation into Fe2+ and Fe3+. Polarization and azimuthal angle dependence of the superlattice reflections demonstrates the absence of anisotropic scattering revealing random orientations of the Fe2+ orbitals characteri…
We report on the magnetic structure and ordering of hexagonal LuFeO3 films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) on YSZ (111) and Al2O3 (0001) substrates. Using a set of complementary probes including neutron diffraction, we find that the system magnetically orders into a ferromagnetically-canted antiferromagnetic state via a single transition between 138-155 K, while a paraelectric to ferroelectric transition occurs above 1000 K. The symmetry of the magnetic structure in the ferroelectric state implies that this material is a strong candidate for linear magnetoelectric coupling and control of…
We performed elastic neutron scattering measurements on the charge- and magnetically-ordered multiferroic material LuFe(2)O(4). An external electric field along the [001] direction with strength up to 20 kV/cm applied at low temperature (~100 K) does not affect either the charge or magnetic structure. At higher temperatures (~360 K), before the transition to three-dimensional charge-ordered state, the resistivity of the sample is low, and an electric current was applied instead. A reduction of the charge and magnetic peak intensities occurs when the sample is cooled under a constant electric c…
The reflectivity of a large LuFe(2)O(4) single crystal has been measured with the radiation field either perpendicular or parallel to the c axis of its rhombohedral structure, from 10 to 500K, and from 7 to 16000 cm-1. The transition between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional charge order at T_(CO) = 320 K is found to change dramatically the phonon spectrum in both polarizations. The number of the observed modes above and below T_(CO), according to a factor-group analysis, is in good agreement with a transition from the rhombohedral space group R{bar 3}m to the monoclinic C2/m. In t…
Hexagonal LuFe2O4 is a promising charge-order (CO) driven multiferroic material with high charge and spin ordering temperatures. The coexisting charge and spin orders on Fe3+/Fe2+ sites result in novel magnetoelectric behaviors, but the coupling mechanism between the charge and spin orders remains elusive. Here, by tuning external pressure, we reveal three correlated spin-charge ordered phases in LuFe2O4: i) a centrosymmetric incommensurate three-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, ii) a non-centrosymmetric incommensurate quasi-two-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, and iii) a centrosymmetric…
Ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials possess spontaneous electric and magnetic order, respectively, which can be switched by the corresponding applied electric and magnetic fields. Multiferroics combine these properties in a single material, providing an avenue for controlling electric polarization with a magnetic field and magnetism with an electric field. These materials have been intensively studied in recent years, both for their fundamental scientific interest as well as their potential applications in a broad range of magnetoelectric devices [1, 2, 3, 4]. However, the microscopic or…
Hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ has drawn a lot of research attention due to its contentious room-temperature multiferroicity. Due to the unstability of hexagonal phase in the bulk form, most experimental studies focused on LuFeO$_3$ thin films which can be stabilized by strain using proper substrates. Here we report on the hexagonal phase stabilization, magnetism, and magnetoelectric coupling of bulk LuFeO$_3$ by partial Sc-substitution of Lu. First, our first-principles calculations show that the hexagonal structure can be stabilized by partial Sc substitution, while the multiferroic properties includin…
LuFe2O4 often is considered as a prototypical multiferroic with polar order arising from the electronic degrees of freedom only ("electronic ferroelectricity"). In the present work, we check the intrinsic nature of the dielectric response of this material by performing dielectric measurements of polycrystalline samples with different types of contact materials and with different grain sizes. In addition, frequency-dependent measurements of the electric-field dependent polarization are provided. The obtained results unequivocally prove that the reported colossal dielectric constants in LuFe2O4,…
The nature of the charge order in the charge frustrated compound LuFe$_2$O$_4$ and its effect on magnetocapacitance were examined on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations of electrostatic energy. Our work shows that two different types of charge order of almost equal stability (i.e., $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$ and chain types) occur in the W-layers of LuFe$_2$O$_4$, and that the ground state of LuFe$_2$O$_4$ has a ferrielectric arrangement of the W-layers with $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$ charge order. The giant magnetocapacitance effect of LuF…
Magneto-capacitance effect was investigated using the impedance spectroscopy on single crystals of LuFe2O4. The intrinsic impedance response could be separated from the interfacial response and showed a clear hysteresis loop below TFerri ~ 240 K under the magnetic field. The neutron diffraction experiment under the magnetic field proves the origin of dielectric property related to the motion of nano-sized ferromagnetic domain boundary. These results imply that the modification of the microscopic domain structure is responsible for the magnetoelectric effect in LuFe2O4.
X-ray scattering by multiferroic LuFe2O4 is reported. Below 320 K, superstructure reflections indicate an incommensurate charge order with propagation close to (1/3,1/3,3/2). The corresponding charge configuration, also found by electronic structure calculations as most stable, contains polar Fe/O double-layers with antiferroelectric stacking. Diffuse scattering at 360 K, with (1/3,1/3,0) propagation, indicates ferroelectric short-range correlations between neighboring double-layers. The temperature dependence of the incommensuration indicates that charge order and magnetism are coupled.
We present a theoretical examination of the magneto-electric response in the recently discovered multiferroic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Combining Monte Carlo simulation and Ginzburg-Landau analysis we predict the response in each of the magnetic phases, including helical, conical, ferromagnetic and Skyrmion crystal phases, both for thin film and bulk systems. A common feature for all non-collinear phases is that the magneto-electric susceptibility increases linearly with the applied magnetic field. Being both calculable and measurable, the magneto-electric susceptibility can serve as a new pow…
By an electrical-pump--optical-probe technique we show that the electric-field-induced reversal of the magnetic order parameter in multiferroic MnWO$_4$ occurs on the time scale of milliseconds and maintains a rigid coupling of the magnetization to the magnetically induced electric polarization. The temporal progression of the spatially resolved domain structure was imaged with nanosecond resolution by optical second harmonic generation and compared to the quasi-static domain reversal. A qualitative model gives an estimate of why the magnetoelectric order-parameter reversal in the magnetically…
In this contribution to the special issue on multiferroics we focus on multiferroicity driven by different forms of charge ordering. We will present the generic mechanisms by which charge ordering can induce ferroelectricity in magnetic systems. There is a number of specific classes of materials for which this is relevant. We will discuss in some detail $(i)$ perovskite manganites of the type (PrCa)MnO$_3$, $(ii)$ the complex and interesting situation in magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$, $(iii)$ strongly ferroelectric frustrated LuFe$_2$O$_4$, $(iv)$ an example of a quasi one-dimensional organic system. …
Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and electroresistance (CER) induced by the electric field in spinel multiferroic CdCr2S4 are reported. It is found that a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in CdCr2S4 is triggered by the electrical field. In magnetic fields, the resistivity of CdCr2S4 responds similarly to that of CMR manganites. Combing previous reports, these findings make CdCr2S4 the unique compound to possess all four properties of the colossal magnetocapacitive (CMC), colossal electrocapacitive (CEC), CER, and CMR. The present results open a new venue for searching new materials to show CMR…
We report for the first time, that Fe3Se4 is a room temperature, type-II multiferroic with magnetoelectric coupling. We observed the coexistence of coupled ferrimagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in Fe3Se4nanorods well above room temperature, which is a hard magnet with large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. For the first time, we observed spontaneous, reversible ferroelectric polarization in Fe3Se4 nanorods below the magnetic Curie temperature. The coupling is manifested by an anomaly in the dielectric constant and Raman shift at Tc. We do not completely understand the origin of the ferroelect…
Orbitally ordered states evolving coincidentally with structural distortions and magnetic ordering provide a novel route to controlling electronic and magnetic properties of materials through external fields. We report an unprecedented magneto-orbital helix in CaMn7O12, found to give rise to the largest magnetically induced ferroelectric polarisation measured to date. Characterisation of the structural modulation using x-ray diffraction, and analysis of magnetic exchange shows that orbital order is crucial in stabilising a chiral magnetic structure, thus allowing for electric polarisation. Add…
We theoretically discover that unique eigenmodes of skyrmion crystal (SkX) are not only magnetically active to ac magnetic field (H^w) but also electrically active to ac electric field (E^w) in a multiferroic chiral-lattice magnet Cu2OSeO3, which amplifies the dynamical magnetoelectric coupling between E^w and the spin texture. The resulting intense interference between their electric and magnetic activation processes can lead to unprecedentedly large diode effect on the microwave, i.e., its absorption by SkX changes up to ~20% when the incident direction is reversed. Our results demonstrate t…
Exploring new magnetic materials is essential for finding advantageous functional properties such as magnetoresistance, magnetocaloric effect, spintronic functionality, and multiferroicity. Versatile classes of double perovskite compounds have been recently investigated because of intriguing physical properties arising from the proper combination of several magnetic ions. In this study, it is observed that the dominant ferrimagnetic phase is coexisted with a minor multiferroic phase in single-crystalline double-perovskite Er2CoMnO6. The majority portion of the ferrimagnetic order is activated …
We investigate magnetoelectric coupling and low-energy magnetic excitations in multiferroic $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ by detailed thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 15~T and by high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance studies. Our data show negative thermal expansion in the temperature range $\leq 200$~K under study. Well-developed anomalies associated with the onset of multiferroic order (canted antiferromagnetism with a significant magnetic moment and ferroelectricity) imply pronounced coupling to the structure. We d…
The experimental studies of magnetoelectric effects in pulse magnetic field up to 250 kOe and their theoretical analysis on the basis of magnetic symmetry consideration are carried out. It is shown that the nonvanishing components of quadratic magnetoelectric effect tensor corresponding to the electric polarization along b- and c-axes point out the triclinic distortion of the crystal symmetry. Anomalous temperature dependence of magnetically induced polarization Pa(Hb) testifies to the magnetically induced pyroelectric effect. The torque curves measurements show the deflection of the spin orie…
We discuss a model scenario for multiferroic systems of type II (collinear spins) where the electric dipolar order competes with a frustrated magnetic order in determining the elastic distortions of the lattice ion positions. High magnetic frustration due to second neighbors exchange and small spin easy-axis anisotropy lead to the appearance of the so called quantum magnetic plateau states. Increasing the magnetic field above the plateau border produces composite excitations, where fractionalized spin tertions arise together with spontaneous dipolar flips (in the form of domain walls) and enha…
All-electrical control of a dynamic magnetoelectric effect is demonstrated in a classical multiferroic manganite DyMnO3, a material containing coupled antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders. Due to intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling with electromagnons a linearly polarized terahertz light rotates upon passing through the sample. The amplitude and the direction of the polarization rotation are defined by the orientation of ferroelectric domains and can be switched by static voltage. These experiments allow the terahertz polarization to be tuned using the dynamic magnetoelectric effect.
In contrast to well studied multiferroic manganites with a spiral structure, the electric polarization in multiferroic borates is induced within collinear antiferromagnetic structure and can easily be switched by small static fields. Because of specific symmetry conditions, static and dynamic properties in borates are directly connected, which leads to giant magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric effects. Here we prove experimentally that the giant magnetodielectric effect in samarium ferroborate SmFe3(BO3)4 is of intrinsic origin and is caused by an unusually large electromagnon situated in th…
We investigate the possible types of coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism for the zig-zag spin chain multiferroic LiCu2O2 compound. We construct a multi-order parameter phenomenological model for the material based on a group theoretical analysis. From our calculation we conclude that a coupling involving the inter-chain magnetic structure and ferroelectricity is necessary to understand the experimental results of Park et.al. Our proposed model is able to account for the electric polarization flop in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. Furthermore, based on our the…
We have investigated magnetoelastic effects in multiferroic HoMnO$_3$ below the antiferromagnetic phase transition $T_N \approx 75$ K by neutron powder diffraction. The lattice parameter $a$ of the hexagonal unit cell of HoMnO$_3$ decrease in the usual way at lower temperatures and then shows abrupt contraction below $T_N$ whereas the lattice parameter $c$ increases continuously with decreasing temperature and shows an anomalous increase below $T_N$. The unit cell volume decreases continuously with decreasing temperature and undergoes abrupt contraction below $T_N$. By fitting the background t…
We present a unique example of giant magnetoelectric effect in a conventional multiferroic HoMnO3, where polarization is very large (~56 mC/m2) and the ferroelectric transition temperature is higher than the magnetic ordering temperature by an order. We attribute the uniqueness of the giant magnetoelectric effect to the ferroelectricity induced entirely by the off-center displacement of rare earth ions with large magnetic moments. This finding suggests a new avenue to design multiferroics with large polarization and higher ferroelectric transition temperature as well as large magnetoelectric e…
A theoretical description of the sequence of magnetic phases in Co3TeO6 is presented. The strongly first-order character of the transition to the commensurate multiferroic ground state, induced by coupled order parameters corresponding to different wavevectors, is related to a large magnetoelastic effect with an exchange energy critically sensitive to the interatomic spacing. The monoclinic magnetic symmetry C2' of the multiferroic phase permits spontaneous polarization and magnetization as well as the linear magnetoelectric effect. The existence of weakly ferromagnetic domains is verified exp…
Multiferroics with the coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders are ideal candidates for magnetoelectric applications. Unfortunately, only very few ferroelectric-ferromagnetic multiferroics (with low magnetic critical temperature) were discovered. Here we perform first principles calculations to investigate the effects of the epitaxial strain on the properties of BiMnO3 films grown along the pseudocubic [001] direction. Unlike the ground state with the centrosymmetric C2/c space group in bulk, we reveal that the tensile epitaxial strain stabilizes the ferromagnetic and ferroelectr…
Magnetic phase transitions in multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) induced by magnetic field, epitaxial strain, and composition modification are considered. These transitions from a spatially modulated spin spiral state to a homogenous antiferromagnetic one are accompanied by the release of latent magnetization and a linear magnetoelectric effect that makes BiFeO3-based materials efficient room-temperature single phase multiferroics.
The magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$ is investigated by magnetostriction measurements along the three crystallographic orientations. Strong lattice anomalies as a function of the magnetic field are detected at the low temperature magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The sign and magnitude of the magnetostrictive coefficient as well as the lattice anomalies at the transitions are correlated with the Dy moment order and with the sharp changes of the dielectric constant and the ferroelectric polarization. With the magnetic field applied along the c-axis a new high-fiel…
LuFe$_4$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the ZrFe$_4$Si$_2$-type structure, hosting chains of Fe-tetrahedra giving rise to geometric frustration and low-dimensionality. The compound orders antiferromagnetically at around 36 K accompanied by a simultaneous structural transition from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase. The hydrostatic pressure dependence of the magnetic and structural transitions is investigated using electrical-transport, ac magnetic-susceptibility, ac calorimetry, M$\ddot{\rm o}$ssbauer, muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR), and x-ray diffraction measurements. External pressure suppresses th…
We present a simple two-dimensional model in which the lattice degrees of freedom mediate the interactions between magnetic moments and electric dipoles. This model reproduces basic features, such as a sudden electric polarization switch-off when a magnetic field is applied and the ubiquitous dimerized distortion patterns and magnetic $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ ordering, observed in several multiferroic materials of different composition. The list includes E-type manganites, RMnO$_3$, nickelates such as in YNiO$_3$ and other materials under strain, such as TbMnO$_3$. In spite of…
We investigate the electronic structure and the ferroelectric properties of the recently discovered multiferroic ScFeO$_3$ by means of ab-initio calculations. The $3d$ manifold of Fe in the half-filled configuration naturally favors an antiferromagnetic ordering, with a theoretical estimate of the antiferromagnetic Néel temperature in good agreement with the experimental values. We find that the inversion symmetry-breaking is driven by the off-centering of Sc atoms, which results in a large ferroelectric polarization of $\sim$105\,$μ$C/cm$^{2}$. Surprisingly the ferroelectric polarization is s…
An effective model is developed to explain the phase diagram and the mechanism of magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics, $RMn_2O_5$. We show that the nature of magnetoelectric coupling in $RMn_2O_5$ is a coupling between two Ising-type orders, namely, the ferroelectric order in the b axis, and the coupled magnetic order between two frustrated antiferromagnetic chains. The frustrated magnetic structure drives the system to a commensurate-incommensurate phase transition, which can be understood as a competition between a collinear or col-plane order stemming from the `order by disorder' mech…
Low energy excitations in the multiferroic material TbMnO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Our observations reveal the existence of two peaks at 30 cm-1 and 60 cm-1. They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. T…
We report the structural and magnetoelectrical properties of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$ perovskite superlattices grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Magnetic hysteresis loops together with temperature dependent magnetic properties exhibit well-defined coercivity and magnetic transition temperature (T$_C$) \symbol{126}140 K. $DC$ electrical studies of films show that the magnetoresistance (MR) is dependent on the BaTiO$_3$ thickness and negative $MR$ as high as 30% at 100K are observed. The $AC$ electrical studies reveal that the impedance and …
We present a phenomenological scheme to study the size-dependent electric voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic (FM)/ferroelectric (FE) heterostructures. The FM layers are either metallic Fe(001), Ni(001), Co(0001), or half-metallic (La, Sr)MnO3 films. Two magnetoelectric mechanisms, i.e., interface-charge and strain-mediated couplings, are considered. We show that the interface-charge mediated coupling is the main mechanism for the magnetoelectic coupling when the FM film thickness is below a certain transition thickness dtr while the strain-mediated coupling dominates above…
We report electrical, magnetic, magnetodielectric and magnetoabsorption properties of a polycrystalline GaFeO3. The resistivity measurement shows that the sample is highly insulating below 200 K and the resistivity above 200 K obey the Arrhenius law with an activation energy of Ea = 0.67 eV. An anomaly occurs in the temperature dependence of permittivity (e) near the ferrimagnetic transition temperature (TC = 228 K) in a zero magnetic field and it is suppressed under H = 60 mT which indicates a possible magnetoelectric coupling in GaFeO3 with a fractional change of de/e = -1.8% at 60 mT around…

We report on the functionalization of multiferroic BiFeO3 epitaxial films for spintronics. A first example is provided by the use of ultrathin layers of BiFeO3 as tunnel barriers in magnetic tunnel junctions with La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 and Co electrodes. In such structures, a positive tunnel magnetoresistance up to 30% is obtained at low temperature. A second example is the exploitation of the antiferromagnetic spin structure of a BiFeO3 film to induce a sizeable (~60 Oe) exchange bias on a ferromagnetic film of CoFeB, at room temperature. Remarkably, the exchange bias effect is robust upon magnetic f…
We have used in-field neutron and X-ray single crystal diffraction to measure the incommensurability δ of the crystal and magnetic structure of multiferroic TbMnO3 . We show that the flop in the electric polarization at the critical field HC, for field H along the a− and b−axis coincides with a 1st order transition to a commensurate phase with propagation vector κ = (0, 1/4, 0). In-field X-ray diffraction measurements show that the quadratic magneto-elastic coupling breaks down with applied field as shown by the observation of the 1st harmonic lattice reflections above an…
The possibility of multiferroicity arising from charge ordering in LuFe2O4 and structurally related rare earth ferrites is reviewed. Recent experimental work on macroscopic indications of ferroelectricity and microscopic determination of coupled spin and charge order indicates that this scenario does not hold. Understanding the origin of the experimentally observed charge and spin order will require further theoretical work. Other aspects of recent research in these materials, such as geometrical frustration effects, possible electric-field-induced transitions, or orbital order are also briefl…
The sulfur based Cr-spinels RCr2S4 with R = Cd and Hg exhibit the coexistence of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties together with a pronounced magnetocapacitive coupling. While in CdCr2S4 purely ferromagnetic order is established, in HgCr2S4 a bond-frustrated magnetic ground state is realized, which, however, easily can be driven towards a ferromagnetic configuration in weak magnetic fields. This paper shall review our recent investigation for both compounds. Besides the characterization of the magnetic properties, the complex dielectric permittivity was studied by means of broadband d…
Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO$_3$ contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field.
The physical properties of epitaxial films can fundamentally differ from those of bulk single crystals even above the critical thickness. By a combination of non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, neutron diffraction and vector-mapped x-ray magnetic linear dichroism photoemission electron microscopy, we show that epitaxial (111)-BiFeO3 films support sub-micron antiferromagnetic domains, which are magneto-elastically coupled to a coherent crystallographic monoclinic twin structure. This unique texture, which is absent in bulk single crystals, should enable control of magnetism in BiFeO3 film d…
Pb(Fe$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$)O$_3$ (PFN), one of the few relaxor multiferroic systems, has a $G$-type antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ = 143 K and a ferroelectric transition at $T_C$ = 385 K. By using high-resolution neutron-diffraction experiments and a total scattering technique, we paint a comprehensive picture of the long- and short-range structures of PFN: (i) a clear sign of short-range structural correlation above $T_C$, (ii) no sign of the negative thermal expansion behavior reported in a previous study, and (iii) clearest evidence thus far of magnetoelectric coupling below $T_N$. We c…
Hexagonal YMnO_3 with space group P63cm is one of the rare examples of multiferroic materials that exhibit co-dependence of a robust ferroelectric phase along with antiferromagnetic ordering. This is primarily ascribed to tilting of the MnO_5 polyhedra driven by magnetoelectric coupling. We report on the effect of magnetic field at the atomic level in YMnO_3 by utilizing magnetic field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction measurements. We show that near the Néel temperature the lattice parameters, effective magnetic moment per site, Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond angles show large …
Multiferroic materials have garnered wide interest for their exceptional static and dynamical magnetoelectric properties. In particular, type-II multiferroics exhibit an inversion-symmetry-breaking magnetic order which directly induces a ferroelectric polarization through various mechanisms, such as the spin-current or the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya effect. This intrinsic coupling between the magnetic and dipolar order parameters results in record-strength magnetoelectric effects. Two dimensional materials possessing such intrinsic multiferroic properties have been long sought for harnessin…
A series of superlattices composed of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) and ferroelectric/paraelectric Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ (0$\leq $x$\leq $1) were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition. Films of epitaxial nature comprised of spherical mounds having uniform size are obtained. Magnetotransport properties of the films reveal a ferromagnetic Curie temperature in the range of 145-158 K and negative magnetoresistance as high as 30%, depending on the type of ferroelectric layers employed for their growth (\QTR{it}{i.e.} '\QTR{it}{x'} value). Ferroelec…
We report on the exchange bias between antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric hexagonal YMnO3 epitaxial thin films sandwiched between a metallic electrode (Pt) and a soft ferromagnetic layer (Py). Anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements are performed to monitor the presence of an exchange bias field. When the heteroestructure is biased by an electric field, it turns out that the exchange bias field is suppressed. We discuss the dependence of the observed effect on the amplitude and polarity of the electric field. Particular attention is devoted to the role of current leakage across the ferroel…
We study magnetic state and electron transport properties of composite multiferroic system consisting of a granular ferromagnetic thin film placed above the ferroelectric substrate. Ferroelectricity and magnetism in this case are coupled by the long-range Coulomb interaction. We show that magnetic state and magneto-transport strongly depend on temperature, external electric field, and electric polarization of the substrate. Ferromagnetic order exists at finite temperature range around ferroelectric Curie point. Outside the region the film is in the superparamagnetic state. We demonstrate that …
