In this review I briefly describe the latest advances in studies of aperiodic variability of accreting X-ray binaries and outline the model which currently describe the majority of observational appearances of variability of accreting sources in the best way. Then I concentrate on the case of luminous accreting neutron star binaries (in the soft/high spectral state), where study of variability of X-ray emission of sources allowed us to resolve long standing problem of disentangling the contribution of accretion disk and boundary/spreading layer components to the time average spectrum of sources. The obtained knowledge of the shape of the spectrum of the boundary layer allowed us to make estimates of the mass and radii of accreting neutron stars.
We investigate the effect of inverse-Compton scattering of flares of soft radiation in different geometries of a hot, Comptonizing region and a colder accretion disk around a solar-mass black hole. The photon-energy dependent light curves, their Fourier transforms, power spectra and Fourier-period dependent time lags of hard photons with respect to softer photons are discussed. On the basis of a comparison with existing data we find arguments against Comptonization of external soft radiation as well as Comptonization in a homogeneous medium as dominant mechanisms for the rapid aperiodic variab…
We detect a significant broadening in the wings of the 401 Hz peak in the power spectrum of the accreting millisecond binary pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. This feature is consistent with the convolution of the red noise present in the power spectrum with the harmonic line. We conclude that the flux modulated by the spin period shows aperiodic variability similar to the red noise in the overall flux, suggesting such variability also originates at the magnetic caps close to the neutron star surface. This is analogous to the results found in some longer period, higher magnetic field pulsators in high …
Besides the narrow peaks originating from the periodic signal, the power spectra of accreting X-ray pulsars display continuum components usually increasing towards low frequencies; these arise from the source aperiodic variability. Most studies so far adopted the view that the periodic and aperiodic variations are independent. However any aperiodic variability in the emission from the accretion column(s) towards the magnetic neutron star should be modulated at the X-ray pulsar period, by virtue of the same rotation-induced geometric effects which give rise to the periodic signal. We develop he…
We present X-ray observations of the Black-Hole Binary GRS 1915+105 made with the RXTE (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer). We concentrated on timing analysis of the strong variability focusing on its aperiodic variability on short (<1s) time scales. In the power density spectra, we found a feature which is seen in many transient systems, but until now was not detected in GRS 1915+105 due to its elusiveness. As this feature has been associated to the collimation and emission of superluminal relativistic jets visible in the radio band, its presence on the prototypical galactic jet source strengthens …
We have conducted a search for aperiodic millisecond variability in the integrated 1 to 25 keV X-ray region of Cyg X-1. We have examined HEAO A-1 archival data and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) guest observer data for evidence of excess power above the Poisson noise floor using the relative integral power analysis and the Fourier transform method. Our results are in disagreement with the results of Meekins et al. (1984). We attribute the discrepancy to an instrumental effect for which Meekins et al.(1984) did not apply a correction. With the correction we see no evidence for excess power …
Using the data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we report the different energy dependence of the variability of the four persistent hard X-ray sources in the low-hard state: Cygnus X-1, GX 339-4, GRS 1758-258 and 1E 1740.7-2942. Cygnus X-1 is found to have a flatter power density spectrum (PDS) shape at higher energies. The other three sources have energy independent PDS shapes. The energy dependence of the overall variability (the integrated rms amplitude) varies from source to source and from observation to observation. 1E~1740.7-2942, for example, has a variability generally inc…
We have obtained discrete Fourier power spectra of a sample of persistent low-mass neutron-star X-ray binaries using long-term light curves from the All Sky Monitor on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Our aim is to investigate their aperiodic variability at frequencies in the range 1 x 10^{-7}-5 x 10^{-6} Hz and compare their properties with those of the black-hole source Cyg X-1. We find that the classification scheme that divides LMXBs into Z and atoll sources blurs at very low frequencies. Based on the long-term (~ years) pattern of variability and the results of power-law fits (P ~ v…
We report the discovery of coupling between periodic and aperiodic variability and ~12-mHz X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from the X-ray binary pulsar Her X-1 using data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. We found two different couplings, one during the pre-eclipse dips and the other during the normal state of the source, using a method which directly compares the low-frequency power-density spectra (PDS) with those of the sidebands around the coherent pulse frequency. The pre-eclipse dip lightcurves show significant time variation of photon counts, and this variation appears in t…
We report the discovery of strong aperiodic X-ray variability and quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the X-ray light curves of a new X-ray Nova, XTE J1550-564, and the evolution of the observed temporal properties during the rise of the recent X-ray outburst. The power spectral analysis of the first observation reveals strong aperiodic X-ray variability of the source (~28%), as well as the presence of a QPO at ~82 mHz with fractional rms amplitude ~14% over the 2-60 keV energy range. Also apparent is the first harmonic of the QPO with the amplitude ~9%. As the X-ray flux increases, the source…
Context: Power density spectra (PDS) that are characteristic of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have been previously reported for M31 X-ray sources, observed by XMM-Newton. However, we have recently discovered that these PDS result from the improper addition/subtraction of non-simultaneous lightcurves. Aims: To understand the properties and origins of the artefact. Methods: We re-analysed our XMM-Newton observations of M31 with non-simultaneous and simultaneous lightcurves, then combined simulated lightcurves at various intensities with various offsets and found that the artefact is more depen…
The aperiodic X-ray variability in neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries (XRBs), and active galactic nuclei (AGN) shows a characteristic linear relationship between rms amplitude and flux, implying a multiplying-together or `coupling' of variability on different time-scales. Such a coupling may result from avalanches of flares, due to magnetic reconnection in an X-ray emitting corona. Alternatively this coupling may arise directly from the coupling of perturbations in the accretion flow, which propagate to the inner emitting regions and so modulate the X-ray emission. Here, we demonstrate…
The most popular models for the complex phase and time lags in the rapid aperiodic variability of Galactic X-ray binaries are based Comptonization of soft seed photons in a hot corona, where small-scale flares are induced by flares of the soft seed photon input (presumably from a cold accretion disc). However, in their original version, these models have neglected the additional cooling of the coronal plasma due to the increased soft seed photon input, and assumed a static coronal temperature structure. In this paper, our Monte-Carlo/Fokker-Planck code for time-dependent radiation transfer and…
We present 13 new ASAS eclipsing binaries that exhibit additional periodic variability due to pulsations, eclipses with another period or spots. All contact and semi-detached binaries from the ASAS Catalogue were investigated.
The time-dependent Comptonized output of a cool soft X-ray source drifting inward through an inhomogeneous hot inner disk or corona is numerically simulated. We propose that this scenario can explain from first principles the observed trends in the hard time lags and power spectra of the rapid aperiodic variability of the X-ray emission of Galactic black-hole candidates.
We observed a large sample of B & Be stars in the Magellanic Clouds, respectively 176 and 344 stars, with the multi-object spectrograph GIRAFFE at ESO/VLT. We obtained spectra at different settings at various epochs. It allowed us to discover several spectroscopic binaries with short and intermediate periods. By cross-correlation in coordinates with the MACHO database, we found the light-curves for 350 stars in our samples. Among them, 19 (14 new) are photometric binaries (5 in the LMC, 14 in the SMC). Among these 19 photometric binaries 6 are also spectroscopic binaries (5 in the LMC, 1 in th…
We have studied the photometric variability of ten SMC Be/X-ray pulsars using MACHO and OGLE-II data. For some of these systems we have found periodic behavior, including orbital outbursts and/or nonradial pulsations (NRP) of the Be star. For others we were unable to identify any clear photometric periodicity, although their longterm light curves show significant structure. We present periodograms, phase dispersion minimization (PDM) variances, and folded light curves for the systems which exhibit periodic photometric variability.
We have carried out a timing analysis of Cyg X-1 and GRS 1915+105 using more than 5 years worth of data from the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board RXTE. We have obtained for the first time power density spectra, colour-colour and colour-intensity plots, cross-correlation functions and phase-lag diagrams to investigate the variability of the sources at frequencies < 10^{-5} Hz. We find that the PDS are not flat but consistent with a power-law of index ~-1. This is the same slope as that found in the power spectra of Cyg X-1 during the soft state. In fact, the power spectrum of Cyg X-1 in the frequ…
The XMM-Newton satellite has made four observations of the core of M31 as part of a survey that will span the entire galaxy. The majority of the X-ray emission is contributed by point sources, chiefly X-ray Binaries (XB). Exciting early results from a survey of time variability in three XMM exposures of the M31 core reveal XB exhibiting Sco X-1 like flaring, dips and a burst. The flaring source in M31 also exhibits variability in intensity and spectral hardness that is characteristic of a Z-source.
We have developed a 3-D Monte Carlo radiative transfer model which computes line and continuum polarization variability for a binary system with an optically thick non-axisymmetric envelope. This allows us to investigate the complex (phase-locked) line and continuum polarization variability features displayed by many massive binaries: W-R+O, O+O, etc. An 8-way tree data structure constructed via a ``cell-splitting'' method allows for high precision with efficient use of computer resources. The model is not restricted to binary systems; it can easily be adapted to a system with an arbitrary den…
Kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) has been regarded as representing the Keplerian frequency at the inner disk edge in the neutron star X-ray binaries. The so-called ``parallel tracks'' on the plot of the kHz QPO frequency vs. X-ray flux in neutron star X-ray binaries, on the other hand, show the correlation between the kHz QPO frequency and the X-ray flux on time scales from hours to days. This is suspected as caused by the variations of the mass accretion rate through the accretion disk surrounding the neutron star. We show here that by comparing the correlation between the kHz…
We review X-ray flux modulation from X-ray binaries on time scales corresponding to the orbital period and those at longer time scales (so called superorbital). Those modulations provide a powerful tool to constrain geometry of the accretion flow. The most common cause of the superorbital variability appears to be precession. We then discuss two specific examples of discoveries of a coupling between the two types of variability and their physical interpretation. One is Cyg X-1, a black-hole binary with a high-mass companion, in which case we find the presence of an accretion bulge formed by co…
It has long been known that X-ray and optical/UV variability in active X-ray binaries is sometimes correlated. The expectation has been that this arises from rapid reprocessing of X-rays into longer wavelength photons, and hence that the lags between the bandpasses can be used to reconstruct an echo-map of the binary, revealing the geometry and spatial scale of reprocessing sites. I will review how this can be done, what can be learned, and what progress has been made with real data. In addition, an interesting twist to the story has emerged in the form of correlated variability that does not …
We review radiative processes responsible for X-ray emission in hard (low) and soft (high) spectral states of black-hole binaries. The main process in the hard state appears to be scattering of blackbody photons from a cold disk by thermal electrons in a hot inner flow, and any contribution from nonthermal synchrotron emission is at most small. In the soft states, blackbody disk emission dominates energetically, and its high-energy tail is due to scattering by hybrid, thermal/nonthermal electrons, probably in active regions above the disk surface. State transitions appear to correspond to a va…
We have investigated the spectral and timing variability of four accreting X-ray pulsars with Be-type companions during major X-ray outbursts. Different spectral states were defined according to the value of the X-ray colours and flux. Transient Be/X-ray binaries exhibit two branches in their colour-colour and colour-intensity diagrams: the horizontal branch corresponds to a low-intensity state and shows the larger fractional rms, similar to the the island state in atolls and horizontal branch in Z sources; the diagonal branch corresponds to a high-intensity state, in which the source spends a…
We studied the aperiodic X-ray timing behaviour of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. The source was recently found to be the first accreting millisecond pulsar that shows the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kilohertz QPOs) that are found in many other X-ray binaries with accreting neutron stars. The high frequency of these signals reflects the short dynamical time scales in the region near the compact object where they originate. We find that in addition to the kilohertz QPOs SAX J1808.4-3658 shows several low frequency timing features, based on which the source can be …
We report on our survey for rapid (time scale of minutes) photometric variability in symbiotic binaries. These binaries are becoming an increasingly important place to study accretion onto white dwarfs since they are candidate Type Ia supernovae progenitors. Unlike in most cataclysmic variables, the white dwarfs in symbiotics typically accrete from a wind, at rates greater than or equal to 10^{-9} solar masses per year. In order to elucidate the differences between symbiotics and other white dwarf accretors, as well as search for magnetism in symbiotic white dwarfs, we have studied 35 primaril…
We compare the count-rates of active binaries observed by Einstein and ROSAT. We find significant evidence for short-term variability (approx 0.32) and marginal evidence for a larger variability at longer timescales (approx 0.38). Modeling this excess as cyclic variability, we place an upper limit on the relative amplitude of the cyclic component (I_cyc/I_min < 4) for active binaries, significantly less than the variations seen in the Solar X-ray output over the Solar cycle.
We study photometric variability among the optical counterparts of X-ray sources in the old open cluster M67. The two puzzling binaries below the giant branch are both variables: for S1113 the photometric period is compatible with the orbital period, S1063 either varies on a period longer than the orbital period, or does not vary periodically. For the spectroscopic binaries S999, S1070 and S1077 the photometric and orbital periods are similar. Another new periodic variable is the main-sequence star S1112, not known to be a binary. An increase of the photometric period in the WUMa system S1282 …
Our knowledge of the phenomenology of accretion onto black holes has increased considerably thanks to ten years of observations with the RXTE satellite. However, only recently it has been possible to derive a scheme for the outburst evolution of transient systems on the basis of their spectral and timing properties, reaching a comprehensive definition of source states. These states are in turn linked to the ejection of relativistic jets as observed in the radio band. Here I concentrate on some specific aspects of this classification, concentrating on the properties of the aperiodic variability…
In the last decade, over 7000 eclipsing binaries have been discovered in the Local Group through various variability surveys. Measuring fundamental parameters of these eclipsing binaries has become feasible with 8 meter class telescopes, making it possible to use eclipsing binaries as distance indicators. Distances with eclipsing binaries provide an independent method for calibrating the extragalactic distance scale and thus determining the Hubble constant. This method has been used for determining distances to eclipsing binaries in the Magellanic Clouds and the Andromeda Galaxy and most recen…
We show that the rms-flux relation recently discovered in the X-ray light curves of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and X-ray binaries (XRBs) implies that the light curves have a formally non-linear, exponential form, provided the rms-flux relation applies to variations on all time-scales (as it appears to). This phenomenological model implies that stationary data will have a lognormal flux distribution. We confirm this result using an observation of Cyg X-1, and further demonstrate that our model predicts the existence of the powerful millisecond flares observed in Cyg X-1 in the low/hard state,…
To study the variability of the 523 B and Be stars observed in the Magellanic clouds with the VLT-FLAMES, we cross-matched the stars of our sample with the photometric database MACHO, which provides for each star an 8 years lightcurve. We searched for long, medium, and short-term periodicity and found the eclipsing binaries in our sample. For these stars, combining, spectroscopy and photometry, we were able to provide information on several systems of stars (systemic velocities, ratios of masses, etc). We also present the ratios of B-binaries to B-non binaries in the LMC/SMC in comparison with…
Standard shot-noise models, which seek to explain the broadband noise variability that characterises the X-ray lightcurves of X-ray binaries and active galaxies, predict that the power spectrum of the X-ray lightcurve is stationary (i.e. constant amplitude and shape) on short time-scales. We show that the broadband noise power spectra of the black hole candidate Cyg X-1 and the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 are intrinsically non-stationary, in that RMS variability scales linearly with flux. Flux-selected power spectra confirm that this effect is due to changes in power-spectral…
Blazars are well known for the violent variability from the radio to gamma-ray wavelengths. In this paper, we present a brief summary of the X-ray variability recently obtained for TeV blazars. We also point out the probable similarities of the X-ray variability characteristics between blazars and microblazars. Such phenomenological analogies could be interpreted and unified with the synchrotron X-ray emissions from the jets of the two classes of objects that differ in black hole mass by factors of $\ga 10^7$. The phenomenological analogies in blazars and microblazars (both are jet-dominated) …
Evidence is emerging that the luminous X-ray sources in the cores of globular clusters may often consist of, or perhaps even as a class be dominated by, ultracompact (P < 1 hr) binary stars. To the two such systems already known, in NGC 6624 and NGC 6712, we now add evidence for two more. We detect large amplitude variability in the candidate optical counterpart for the X-ray source in the core of NGC 6652. Although the available observations are relatively brief, the existing Hubble Space Telescope data indicate a strong 43.6 min periodic modulation of the visible flux of semi-amplitude 30%. …
Several AGN and black hole X-ray binaries show a clear very broad iron line which is strong evidence that the black holes are rapidly spinning. Detailed analysis of these objects shows that the emission line is not significantly affected by absorption and that the source variability is principally due to variation in amplitude of a power-law. Underlying this is a much less variable, relativistically-smeared, reflection-dominated, component which carries the imprint of strong gravity at a few gravitational radii. The strong gravitational light bending in these regions then explains the power-la…
We investigate the spectroscopic characteristics of the optical components of Be/X-ray binary systems, using data collected during our seven-year monitoring campaign. We find examples of major changes in the emission line profiles associated with Type II X-ray outbursts, later developing into V/R variability cycles. We show that the time-scales for V/R variability in Be/X-ray transients extend from a few weeks to years and interpret all these changes as due to the presence of global disruptions of the axisymmetric density distribution in the extended envelopes of the Be stars in these systems.…
RXTE/PCA observations of several black hole X-ray binaries in the low spectral state revealed a tight correlation between spectral parameters and characteristic frequencies of variability of X-ray flux. In particular, the amplitude of reflection increases and the slope of Comptonized radiation steepens as the noise frequencies increase. The data also suggest that there is a correlated increase of the width of the Fe fluorescent line, probably related to the Doppler broadening of the reflection features. Moreover, the width of the line seems to follow DeltaE/E ~ nu_qpo^{1/3} law. If confirmed w…
We present an analysis of the X-ray variability of three symbiotic X-ray binaries, GX 1+4, 4U 1700+24, and 4U 1954+31, using observations made with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM). Observations of 4U 1954+31 with the Swift BAT show modulation at a period near 5 hours. Models to explain this modulation are discussed including the presence of an exceptionally slow X-ray pulsar in the system and accretion instabilities. We conclude that the most likely interpretation is that 4U 1954+31 contains one of the slowest known X-ray p…
This paper presents the first optical variability study of the Westerlund 1 super star cluster in search of massive eclipsing binary systems. A total of 129 new variable stars have been identified, including the discovery of 4 eclipsing binaries that are cluster members, 1 additional candidate, 8 field binaries, 19 field delta Scuti stars, 3 field W UMa eclipsing binaries, 13 other periodic variables and 81 long period or non-periodic variables. These include the known luminous blue variable, the B[e] star, 11 Wolf-Rayet stars, several supergiants, and other reddened stars that are likely memb…
We develop a two-flow model of accretion onto a black hole which incorporates the effect of the local magneto-rotational instability. The flow consists of an accretion disk and an accreting corona, and the local dynamo affects the disk/corona mass exchange. The model is aimed to explain the power spectrum density of the sources in their soft, disk-dominated states. The local perturbations of the magnetic field in the disk are described as in King et al. (2004) and Mayer and Pringle (2005), but the time-dependent local magnetic field is assumed to affect the local supply of the material to the …
In this paper we investigate the X-ray spectra and X-ray spectral variability of compact X-ray sources for 3 Chandra observations of the Local Group galaxy M33. The observations are centered on the nucleus and the star forming region NGC 604. In the observations 261 sources have been detected. For a total of 43 sources the number of net counts is above 100, sufficient for a more detailed spectral fitting. Of these sources, 25 have been observed in more than one observation, allowing the study of spectral variability on ~months timescales. A quarter of the sources are found to be variable betwe…
A characteristic feature of the Fourier Power Density Spectrum (PDS) observed from black hole X-ray binaries in low/hard and intermediate spectral states is a broad band-limited noise, characterized by a constant below some frequency (a ``break'' frequency) and a power law above this frequency. It has been shown that the variability of this type can be produced by the inward diffusion of the local driving perturbations in a bounded configuration (accretion disk or corona). In the framework of this model, the perturbation diffusion time t_0 is related to the phenomenological break frequency, wh…
As a result of the search among about 11 000 stars from the public ASAS-3 database, we report detection of pulsating components in eleven eclipsing binaries. In particular, we have found three classical Algols, MX Pav, IZ Tel, and VY Mic, with $δ$ Sct-type primary components. In six other eclipsing binaries, the short-period variability can also be interpreted in terms of $δ$ Sct-type pulsations, but in these systems both components are probably main-sequence stars. In HD 99612, the pulsation mode shows significant amplitude decrease during the time interval covered by observations. In additio…
Positions of High-Mass X-ray Binaries are often known precisely enough to unambiguously identify the optical component, and a number of those stars are monitored by the OGLE and MACHO collaborations. The light curves of two such candidates are examined for evidence of Be star behavior and for periodicity. One of the stars exhibits two periods of 6.833 and 15.586 hours, much shorter and more stable than periods of Be/X-Ray Binaries that are attributed to the Be star's disk, but consistent with short-term Be variability attributed to pulsations. The multiperiodicity is quantified with Fourier te…
We have used INTEGRAL & RXTE data to investigate the timing properties of the source in correlation with its spectral states as defined by different positions in the colour-colour diagram. The source shows two distinct branches in the colour-colour diagram that resemble those of the Z sources. The hard branch (similar to the horizontal branch of Z sources) is characterised by a low-amplitude change of the hard colour compared to the change in the soft colour. In the soft branch (analogue to the normal branch) the amplitude of variability of the hard colour is about three times larger than that…
A brief overview is given of the observations of accretion disks in X-ray binaries, discussing their geometry, their effect on the rotation period of the accreting object, their optical and X-ray spectra, time variability, and radio emission and jets. Some outstanding questions for disk theory are listed.
Hipparcos observations of some variable stars, and especially of long-period (e.g. Mira) variables, reveal a motion of the photocenter correlated with the brightness variation ({variability-induced mover -- VIM), suggesting the presence of a binary companion. A re-analysis of the Hipparcos photometric and astrometric data does not confirm the VIM solution for 62 among the 288 VIM objects (21%) in the Hipparcos catalogue. Most of these 288 VIMs are long-period (e.g. Mira) variables (LPV). The effect of a revised chromaticity correction, which accounts for the color variations along the light cy…
Shaping axi-symmetric planetary nebulae is easier if a companion interacts with a primary at the top of the asymptotic giant branch. To determine the impact of binarity on planetary nebula formation and shaping, we need to determine the central star of planetary nebula binary fraction and period distribution. The short-period binary fraction has been known to be 10-15% from a survey of ~100 central stars for photometric variability indicative of irradiation effects, ellipsoidal variability or eclipses. This survey technique is known to be biased against binaries with long periods and this fact…
At present, ten years after they were first discovered, ten accreting millisecond pulsars are known. I present a study of the aperiodic X-ray variability in three of these systems, which led to the discovery of simultaneous kHz quasi periodic oscillations in XTE J1807-294 and extremely strong broadband noise at unusually low variability frequencies in IGR J00291+5934. Furthermore, we classified SWIFT J1756.9-2508 as an atoll source and measured in its 2007 outburst spectral and variability properties typical of the extreme island state. I also give detailed estimates of the total fluence durin…
Observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster SMC-NGC330 and its surrounding region were obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We investigated the B and Be star properties and proportions in this environment of low metallicity. We also searched for rapid variability in Be stars using photometric databases. With spectroscopic measurements we characterized the emission and properties of Be stars. By cross-correlation with photometric databases such as MACHO and OGLE, we searched for binaries in our sample of hot stars, as well as for short-term variability in Be sta…
We present a method of analysing the correlated X-ray and optical/UV variability in X-ray binaries, using the observed time delays between the X-ray driving lightcurves and their reprocessed optical echoes. This allows us to determine the distribution of reprocessing sites within the binary. We model the time-delay transfer functions by simulating the distribution of reprocessing regions, using geometrical and binary parameters. We construct best-fit time-delay transfer functions, showing the regions in the binary responsible for the reprocessing of X-rays. We have applied this model to observ…
In X-ray binaries much of the optical/UV emission arises from X-rays reprocessed by material in the accretion disk, stream and the companion star. The resulting reprocessed variability will be delayed in time with respect to the X-ray variability by an amount depending on the position of the reprocessing regions. We can determine a range of time-delays present in the system. This time-delay transfer function can be used to `echo-map' the geometry of the reprocessing regions in the binary system. We present our modeling of this transfer function and show results from our echo-mapping campaign u…
We study systematically the ~0.1-1200 Hz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and broad noise components observed in the power spectra of non-pulsing neutron-star and black-hole low-mass X-ray binaries. We show that among these components we can identify two, occurring over a wide range of source types and luminosities, whose frequencies follow a tight correlation. The variability components involved in this correlation include neutron-star kilohertz QPOs and horizontal-branch oscillations, as well as black-hole QPOs and noise components. Our results suggest that the same types of variability ma…
Before the launch of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite, the differences in the rapid X-ray variability between the two main types of neutron star binaries (i.e., the Z and atoll sources) could be explained by invoking different mass accretion rates and magnetic field strengths. However, the results obtained with RXTE now show that these systems are more similar than previously thought and although differences in mass accretion rate are still likely, the differences in the magnetic field strength have become questionable. The great similarities between the neutron star systems an…
We present the results of XMM-Newton observations of two AM CVn systems - V396 Hya and SDSS J1240-01. Both systems are detected in X-rays and in the UV: neither shows coherent variability in their light curves. We compare the rms variability of the X-ray and UV power spectra of these sources with other AM CVn systems. Apart from ES Cet, AM CVn sources are not strongly variable in X-rays, while in the UV the degree of variability is related to the systems apparent brightness. The X-ray spectra of V396 Hya and SDSS J1240-01 show highly non-solar abundances, requiring enhanced nitrogen to obtain …
We present the photometric properties of 1279 blue variable stars within the LMC. Photometry is derived from the MACHO database. The lightcurves of the sample exhibit a variety of quasi-periodic and aperiodic outburst behavior. A characteristic feature of the photometric variation is that the objects are reddest when at maximum outburst. A subset of 102 objects were examined spectroscopically. Within this subset, 91% exhibited Balmer emission in at least one epoch, in some cases with spectacular spectral variability. The variability observed in the sample is consistent with the establishment a…
This work presents the results from a systematic search for evidence of temporal changes (i.e., non-stationarity) associated with spectral variations in 3C 390.3, using data from a two-year intensive RXTE monitoring campaign of this broad-line radio galaxy. In order to exploit the potential information contained in a time series more efficiently, we adopt a multi-technique approach, making use of linear and non-linear techniques. All the methods show suggestive evidences for non-stationarity in the temporal properties of 3C 390.3 between 1999 and 2000, in the sense that the characteristic time…
