Timing the accretion flow around accreting millisecond pulsars

At present, ten years after they were first discovered, ten accreting millisecond pulsars are known. I present a study of the aperiodic X-ray variability in three of these systems, which led to the discovery of simultaneous kHz quasi periodic oscillations in XTE J1807-294 and extremely strong broadband noise at unusually low variability frequencies in IGR J00291+5934. Furthermore, we classified SWIFT J1756.9-2508 as an atoll source and measured in its 2007 outburst spectral and variability properties typical of the extreme island state. I also give detailed estimates of the total fluence during the studied outbursts.
Millisecond variability detected in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) probably reflects motions of accreting fluid in the strong-field gravity of neutron stars or neutron stars. Parametric resonance between two oscillators with unequal eigenfrequencies provides a natural explanation for the 2:3 frequency ratio observed in some black-hole systems, and probably also in the brightest neutron stars. The two oscillators likely correspond to the meridional and radial epicyclic motions.
I review the basic observational properties of accreting millisecond pulsars that are important for understanding the physics involved in formation of their pulse profiles. I then discuss main effects responsible for shaping these profiles. Some analytical results that help to understand the results of simulations are presented. Constraints on the pulsar geometry and the neutron star equation of state obtained from the analysis of the pulse profiles are discussed.
I review the properties of three X-ray accreting millisecond pulsars observed with INTEGRAL. Out of seven recently discovered accretion-powered pulsars (one discovered by INTEGRAL), three were observed with the INTEGRAL satellite up to 300 keV. Detailed timing and spectral results will be presented, including data obtained during the most recent outburst of the pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. Accreting X-ray millisecond pulsars are key systems to understand the spin and accretion history of neutron stars. They are also a good laboratory in which to study the source spectra, pulse profile, and phase …
The primary concern of this contribution is that accreting millisecond pulsars (AMXPs) show a much larger amount of information than is commonly believed. The three questions to be addressed are: 1. Is the apparent spin torque observed in AMXPs real ? 2. Why do we see correlations and anti-correlations between fractional amplitudes and timing residuals in some AMXPs ? 3. Why the timing residuals, the lightcurve and the 1Hz QPO in SAX J1808.4$-$3658 are related ?
Intermittent accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars are an exciting new type of sources. Their pulsations appear and disappear either on timescales of hundreds of seconds or on timescales of days. The study of these sources add new observational constraints to present models that explain the presence or not of pulsations in neutron star LMXBs. In this paper we present preliminary results on spectral and aperiodic variability studies of all intermittent AMSPs, with a particular focus on the comparison between pulsating and non pulsating periods.
We review recent results from the X-ray timing of accreting millisecond pulsars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries. This is the first time a timing analysis is performed on accreting millisecond pulsars, and for the first time we can obtain information on the behavior of a very fast pulsar subject to accretion torques. We find both spin-up and spin-down behaviors, from which, using available models for the accretion torques, we derive information on the mass accretion rate and magnetic field of the neutron star in these systems. The nature of the asymmetry that gives rise to Type I X-ray burst oscillations on accreting neutron stars remains a matter of debate. Of particular interest is whether the burst oscillation mechanism differs between the bursting millisecond pulsars and the non-pulsing systems. One means to diagnose this is to study the energy dependence of the burst oscillations: here we present an analysis of oscillations from 28 bursts observed during the 2003 outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338. We performed a timing analysis of the fastest accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 using RXTE data taken during the outburst of December 2004. We corrected the arrival times of all the events for the orbital (Doppler) effects and performed a timing analysis of the resulting phase delays. In this way we have the possibility to study, for the first time in this class of sources, the spin-up of a millisecond pulsar as a consequence of accretion torques during the X-ray outburst. SWIFT J1756.9-2508 is one of the few accreting millisecond pulsars (AMPs) discovered to date. We report here the results of our analysis of its aperiodic X-ray variability, as measured with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the 2007 outburst of the source. We detect strong (~35%) flat-topped broadband noise throughout the outburst with low characteristic frequencies (~0.1 Hz). This makes SWIFT J1756.9-2508 similar to the rest of AMPs and to other low luminosity accreting neutron stars when they are in their hard states, and enables us to classify this AMP as an atoll source in the extreme…
We perform a timing analysis on RXTE data of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1751-305 observed during the April 2002 outburst. After having corrected for Doppler effects on the pulse phases due to the orbital motion of the source, we performed a timing analysis on the phase delays, which gives, for the first time for this source, an estimate of the average spin frequency derivative <nu_dot> = (3.7 +/- 1.0)E-13 Hz/s. We report on the X-ray aperiodic timing analysis of two accreting millisecond pulsars: XTE J1807-294 and IGR J00291+5934. On the one hand, we discovered in XTE J1807-294 seven pairs of simultaneous kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) separated in frequency by nearly the spin frequency of the neutron star. This confirms the suspected dichotomy in the frequency separation of kHz QPOs: sometimes once and sometimes half the spin frequency. Transient radio emission from X-ray binaries is associated with synchrotron emission from collimated jets that escape the system, and accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs) are no exception. Although jets from black hole X-ray binaries are well-studied, those from neutron star systems appear much fainter, for reasons yet uncertain. Jets are usually undetectable at higher frequencies because of the relative brightness of other components such as the accretion disc. AMXPs generally have small orbital separations compared with other X-ray binaries and as such their discs are relatively faint…
We investigate further a model of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars we proposed earlier. In this model, the X-ray-emitting regions of these pulsars are near their spin axes but move. This is to be expected if the magnetic poles of these stars are close to their spin axes, so that accreting gas is channeled there. As the accretion rate and the structure of the inner disk vary, gas is channeled along different field lines to different locations on the stellar surface, causing the X-ray-emitting areas to move. Raytracing computations for light emitted from the surface of a rapidly rotating neutron star are carried out in order to construct light curves for accreting millisecond pulsars. These calculations are for realistic models of rapidly rotating neutron stars which take into account both the correct exterior metric and the oblate shape of the star. We find that the most important effect, comparing the full raytracing computations with simpler approximations currently in use, arises from the oblate shape of the rotating star. BeppoSAX has revealed a population of faint neutron star X-ray transients in the Galactic bulge. King conjectured that these neutron stars are accreting from brown dwarfs (BD) with a time-averaged mass transfer rate <\dot M>\approx 10^{-11} M_sun/year. We show that the orbital parameters of the 401 Hz accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 support this hypothesis. A main-sequence mass donor requires a nearly face-on inclination and a higher <\dot M> than observed. We have studied the aperiodic X-ray timing and color behavior of the accreting millisecond pulsars SAX J1808.4-3658, XTE J1751-305, XTE J0929-314, and XTE J1814-338 using large data sets obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We find that the accreting millisecond pulsars have very similar timing properties to the atoll sources and the low luminosity bursters. Based on the correlation of timing and color behavior SAX J1808.4-3658 can be classified as an atoll source, and XTE J0929-314 and XTE J1814-338 are consistent with being atoll sources, but the color behavior of XTE J1751-305 is …
We present a precise timing analysis of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 during its 2003 outburst, observed by RXTE. A full orbital solution is given for the first time; Doppler effects induced by the motion of the source in the binary system were corrected, leading to a refined estimate of the orbital period, P_orb=15388.7229(2)s, and of the projected semimajor axis, a sini/c= 390.633(9) lt-ms. It is widely assumed that the observed reduction of the magnetic field of millisecond pulsars can be connected to the accretion phase during which the pulsar is spun up by mass accretion from a companion. A wide variety of reduction mechanisms have been proposed, including the burial of the field by a magnetic mountain, formed when the accreted matter is confined to the poles by the tension of the stellar magnetic field. We present XMM-Newton MOS imaging and PN timing data of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232. We confirm the previously detected pulsations of PSR J0218+4232 and we show that the folded lightcurve is dependent on energy. We present the broad band (0.2-10.0 keV) spectrum of this millisecond pulsar, as well as the spectra of: the pulsed emission, the individual pulses, the interpulse and the non-pulsed region and we compare our results with previous data from Rosat, BeppoSAX and Chandra. We discuss the results of the spectral fitting in the context of recent pulsar models.
We report the discovery by the RXTE PCA of a second transient accreting millisecond pulsar, XTE J1751-305, during regular monitoring observations of the galactic bulge region. The pulsar has a spin frequency of 435 Hz, making it one of the fastest pulsars. The pulsations contain the signature of orbital Doppler modulation, which implies an orbital period of 42 minutes, the shortest orbital period of any known radio or X-ray millisecond pulsar. The mass function, f_x = (1.278 +/- 0.003) x 10^{-6} M_sun, yields a minimum mass for the companion of between 0.013 and 0.017 M_sun, depending on the m…
We present multiband optical/infrared photometry of V4580 Sgr, the optical counterpart of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, taken during the 1998 X-ray outburst of the system. The optical flux is consistent with emission from an X-ray-heated accretion disk. Self-consistent modeling of the X-ray and optical emission during the outburst yields best-fit extinction Av=0.68 and inclination cos(i)=0.65, assuming a distance of 2.5 kpc. We have identified the third known accretion-powered millisecond pulsar, XTE J0929-314, with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. The source is a faint, high-Galactic-latitude X-ray transient (d >~ 5 kpc) that was in outburst during 2002 April-June. The 185 Hz (5.4 ms) pulsation had a fractional rms amplitude of 3-7% and was generally broad and sinusoidal, although occasionally double-peaked. The hard X-ray pulses arrived up to 770 microseconds earlier than the soft X-ray pulses. We present a phase-coherent timing analysis of the intermittent accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1748.9-2021. A new timing solution for the pulsar spin period and the Keplerian binary orbital parameters was achieved by phase connecting all episodes of intermittent pulsations visible during the 2001 outburst. We investigate the pulse profile shapes, their energy dependence and the possible influence of Type I X-ray bursts on the time of arrival and fractional amplitude of the pulsations. The relativistic plasma flows onto neutron stars that are accreting material from stellar companions can be used to probe strong-field gravity as well as the physical conditions in the supranuclear-density interiors of neutron stars. Plasma inhomogeneities orbiting a few kilometres above the stars are observable as X-ray brightness fluctuations on the millisecond dynamical timescale of the flows. Two frequencies in the kilohertz range dominate these fluctuations: the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs). The fourth transient accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 was observed during its February/March 2003 outburst by INTEGRAL, partly simultaneously with the XMM-Newton and RXTE satellites. We present here the first study of the 0.5-200 keV broad-band spectra of the source. Detailed modeling of the millisecond brightness oscillations during thermonuclear bursts from low mass X-ray binaries can provide important information about neutron star structure. Until now the implementation of this idea has not been entirely successful, largely because of the negligible harmonic content in burst oscillation lightcurves. However, the recent discovery of non-sinusoidal burst oscillation lightcurves from the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 has changed this situation. The pulse profiles of the accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 at different energies are studied. The two main emission component, a black body and a power-law tail, clearly identified in the time-averaged spectrum, do not vary in phase. We show that the observed variability can be easily explained if the emission patterns of the black body and the Comptonized radiation are different: a "knife" and a "fan"-like, respectively. We suggest that Comptonization in a hot slab (radiative shock) of Thomson optical depth \~0.3 at the surface of the neutron star may be responsible for the…
Simultaneous observations of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 by International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the 2004 December outburst are analysed. The average spectrum is well described by thermal Comptonization with an electron temperature of 50 keV and Thomson optical depth tau_T ~ 1 in a slab geometry. The spectral shape is almost constant during the outburst. We detect a spin-up of the pulsar with nudot=8.4x10E-13 Hz/s. Using pulse timing observations we have obtained precise parameters, including positions with about 20 mas accuracy, of five millisecond pulsars in NGC 6752. Three of them, located relatively close to the cluster center, have line-of-sight accelerations larger than the maximum value predicted by the central mass density derived from optical observation, providing dynamical evidence for a central mass-to-light ratio >~ 10, much higher than for any other globular cluster. IGR J00291+5934 is one of the seven accreting millisecond pulsars (AMPs) discovered so far. We report on the aperiodic timing and color analysis of its X-ray flux, using all the RXTE observations of the 2004 outburst. Flat-top noise and two harmonically related quasi-periodic oscillations, all of them at very low frequencies (0.01-0.1 Hz), were present in the power spectra during most of the outburst as well as a very high fractional variability (~50%). We report on high-resolution spatial and timing results for binary millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 obtained with the Chandra HRC-I and HRC-S in imaging mode. We found no indications for extended emission at 1 arcsec scales. With the HRC-S observation we obtained a 0.08-10 keV pulse profile with high statistics which could be compared in absolute time with the pulse profiles at radio-frequencies and at high-energy gamma-rays. The two X-ray pulses at aligned with 2 of the 3 radio-pulses, and with the 2 gamma-ray pulses.
Since the initial discoveries with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in 1996 of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) and burst oscillations in a number of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) containing low-magnetic-field neutron stars, a very active field has developed. I briefly summarize some of the developments since those early days, which include the discovery of the first accreting millisecond pulsar, further claims of the detection of strong-field general-relativistic effects, intriguing correlations of the kHz QPO properties with QPOs at lower frequencies, strong challenge…
X-ray timing of the accretion-powered pulsations during the 2003 outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 has revealed variation in the pulse time of arrival residuals. These can be interpreted in several ways, including spin-down and wandering of the fuel impact point around the magnetic pole. In this Letter we show that the burst oscillations of this source are coherent with the persistent pulsations, to the level where they track all of the observed fluctuations. We present temporal analysis of the three outbursts of the X-ray millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 that occurred in 1998, 2000 and 2002. With a technique that uses the chi^2 obtained with an epoch folding search to discriminate between different possible orbital solutions, we find an unique solution valid over the whole five years period for which high temporal resolution data are available. Observations made using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer have shown that accreting weak-field neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binary systems (LMXBs) produce three distinct types of millisecond X-ray oscillations that can be used to determine the spin rates and estimate the magnetic fields of these stars. We report the discovery of twin kHz QPOs in the X ray flux of XTE J1807--294, the fourth accreting millisecond pulsar (AMP). This is the second AMP exhibiting twin kHz QPOs. In contrast to the first case, SAX J1808.4--3658, the frequency separation $Δν$ between the kHz QPOs is consistent with the pulse frequency (190.6 Hz), not with half that value, confirming for the first time from pulsation measurements the inference, based on burst oscillations, that 'slow rotators' (spin frequency less than 400 Hz) have $Δν$ approximately equal to the spin frequency. We have obtained optical and near-infrared images of the field of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar XTE J1751-305. There are no stars in the 0.7'' error circle (0.7'' is the overall uncertainty arising from tying the optical and X-ray images and from the intrinsic uncertainty in the Chandra X-ray astrometric solution). We derive limiting magnitudes for the counterpart of R>23.1, I>21.6, Z>20.6, J>19.6, K>19.2. We compare these upper limits with the magnitudes one would expect for simple models for the possible donor stars and the accretion disk subject to the reddening observed in X-rays …
A class of low-mass X-ray binary sources are known to be both X-ray burst sources and millisecond pulsars at the same time. A new source of this class was discovered by High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE-2) on 14 June 2005 as a source of type-I X-ray bursts, which was named HETE J1900.1-2455. Five X-ray bursts from HETE J1900.1-2455 were observed during the summer of 2005. The time resolved spectral analysis of these bursts have revealed that their spectra are consistent with the blackbody radiation throughout the bursts. The spin frequency distribution of accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars cuts off sharply above 730 Hz, well below the breakup spin rate for most neutron star equations of state. I review several different ideas for explaining this cutoff. There is currently considerable interest in the idea that gravitational radiation from rapidly rotating pulsars might act to limit spin up by accretion, possibly allowing eventual direct detection with gravitational wave interferometers. We report results on the timing and spectral analysis of observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR B1821-24 with RXTE, BeppoSAX and Chandra. The X-ray light curve is characterized by two narrow peaks at a phase distance of 0.452+/-0.002. The average pulsed emission, over the range 1.6-20 keV, is well represented by a single power law with a photon index alpha=1.30 +0.05 -0.02 and unabsorbed (2-10 keV) pulsed X-ray flux of 3.9x10^(-13) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1). We investigate the dependence of pulse amplitudes of accreting millisecond pulsars on the masses of the neutron stars. Because the pulsation amplitudes are suppressed as the neutron stars become more massive, the probability of detection of pulsations decreases in systems that have been accreting for a long time. However, the probability of detectable pulsations is higher in transient systems where the mass accretion is sporadic and the neutron star is likely to have a low mass. We propose this mechanism as the explanation of the small number of millisecond X-ray pulsars found to date, as well…
Exploiting a five-year span of data, we present improved timing solutions for the five millisecond pulsars known in the globular cluster NGC 6752. They include proper motion determinations for the two outermost pulsars in the cluster, PSR J1910-5959A and PSR J1910-5959C. The values of the proper motions are in agreement with each other within current uncertainties, but do not match (at 4 sigma and 2 sigma level respectively) with the value of the proper motion of the entire globular cluster derived in the optical band. Millisecond pulsars are neutron stars (NSs) that are thought to have been spun-up by mass accretion from a stellar companion. It is unknown whether there is a natural brake for this process, or if it continues until the centrifugal breakup limit is reached at submillisecond periods. Many NSs that are accreting from a companion exhibit thermonuclear X-ray bursts that last tens of seconds, caused by unstable nuclear burning on their surfaces. We present timing observations of four millisecond pulsars, using data obtained over three years at the ATNF Parkes and NRAL Jodrell Bank radio telescopes. Astrometric, spin, and binary parameters are updated, and substantially improved for three pulsars, PSRs J0613-0200, J1045-4509 and J1643-1224. We have measured the time variation of the projected semi-major axis of the PSR J0437-4715 orbit due to its proper motion, and use it to constrain the inclination of the orbit and the mass of the companion. We studied the aperiodic X-ray timing behaviour of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. The source was recently found to be the first accreting millisecond pulsar that shows the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kilohertz QPOs) that are found in many other X-ray binaries with accreting neutron stars. The high frequency of these signals reflects the short dynamical time scales in the region near the compact object where they originate. We performed a timing analysis of the 2003 outburst of the accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 observed by RXTE. Using recently refined orbital parameters we report for the first time a precise estimate of the spin frequency and of the spin frequency derivative. The phase delays of the pulse profile show a strong erratic behavior superposed to what appears as a global spin-up trend. The erratic behavior of the pulse phases is strongly related to rapid variations of the light curve, making it very difficult to fit these phase delays with a simple law. By analyzing the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data on SAX J1808.4-3658 we show that the X-ray emission in accretion powered millisecond pulsars can be produced by Comptonization in a hot slab (radiative shock) of Thomson optical depth tau~1 at the neutron star surface. The escaping radiation consists of two components: a black body and a hard Comptonized tail. These components have very different angular distribution: the black body peaks along the slab normal (a ``pencil''--like emission pattern), while the tail has a broader angular distribution (a ``fan''--like pattern). The amplitude of the gravitational radiation from an accreting neutron star undergoing polar magnetic burial is calculated. During accretion, the magnetic field of a neutron star is compressed into a narrow belt at the magnetic equator by material spreading equatorward from the polar cap. In turn, the compressed field confines the accreted material in a polar mountain which is misaligned with the rotation axis in general, producing gravitational waves. The pulse profiles of the accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 at different energies are studied. The two main emission component, the black body and the Comptonized tail that are clearly identified in the time-averaged spectrum, show strong variability with the first component lagging the second one. The observed variability can be explained if the emission is produced by Comptonization in a hot slab (radiative shock) of Thomson optical depth ~0.3-1 at the neutron star surface. Observations using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer have discovered dozens of accreting neutron stars with millisecond spin periods in low-mass binary star systems. Eighteen are millisecond X-ray pulsars powered by accretion or nuclear burning or both. These stars have magnetic fields strong enough for them to become millisecond rotation-powered (radio) pulsars when accretion ceases. Few, if any, accretion- or rotation-powered pulsars have spin rates higher than 750 Hz. The accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 was observed by XMM-Newton on March 22, 2003 after its discovery on February 21, 2003 by RXTE. The source was detected in its bright phase with an observed average count rate of 33.3 cts/s in the EPIC-pn camera in the 0.5-10 keV energy band (3.7 mCrab). Using the earlier established best-fit orbital period of 40.0741+/-0.0005 minutes from RXTE observations and considering a circular binary orbit as first approximation, we derived a value of 4.8+/-0.1 lt-ms for the projected orbital radius of the binary system and an epoch of the orbital phase of M…
We report the discovery of PSR J1909-3744, a 2.95 millisecond pulsar in a nearly circular 1.53 day orbit. Its narrow pulse width of 43 microseconds allows pulse arrival times to be determined with great accuracy. We have spectroscopically identified the companion as a moderately hot (T = 8500 K) white dwarf with strong absorption lines. Radial velocity measurements of the companion will yield the mass ratio of the system. Our timing data suggest the presence of Shapiro delay; we expect that further timing observations, combined with the mass ratio, will allow the first accurate determination o…
We present results of long-term timing of eclipsing binaries PSR B1744-24A and PSR B1957+20 at Arecibo, the VLA, and Green Bank. Both pulsars exhibit irregularities in pulsar rotation and orbital motion. Increases and decreases of the orbital period of PSR B1957+20 are of order Delta-P_b/P_b ~ 10^-7, varying on a time scale of a few years. Over a decade of observations, the orbital period of PSR B1744-24A has only decreased, with time scale |P_b/P_b-dot| ~ 200 Myr. Precession in an accretion-powered pulsar is expected to produce characteristic variations in the pulse properties. Assuming surface intensity maps with one and two hotspots, we compute theoretically the periodic modulation of the mean flux, pulse-phase residuals and fractional amplitudes of the first and second harmonic of the pulse profiles. These quantities are characterised in terms of their relative precession phase offsets. We present XMM-Newton MOS imaging and PN timing data of the faint millisecond pulsars PSR J0751+1807 and PSR J1012+5307. We find 46 sources in the MOS field of view of PSR J0751+1807 searching down to an unabsorbed flux limit of 3 x 10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 (0.2-10.0 keV). We present, for the first time, the X-ray spectra of these two faint millisecond pulsars. We find that a power law model best fits the spectrum of PSR J0751+1807, Gamma=1.59+/-0.20, with an unabsorbed flux of 4.4 x 10^-14 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 (0.2-10.0 keV). A power law is also a good description of the spectrum of PSR J1012+5307, …
Theoretically, the phase transition between the confined and deconfined phases of quarks can have a remarkable effect on the spin properties of millisecond pulsars and on the spin distribution of the population of x-ray neutron stars in low-mass binaries. In the latter class of stars, the effect has already been observed---a strong clustering in the population in a narrow band of spins. The observed clustering cannot presently be uniquely assigned to the phase transition as cause. However, there is another possible signal---not so far observed---in millisecond pulsars that we also discuss. It …
