In HST Cycles 11 and 13 we obtained two epochs of ACS/HRC data for fields in the Magellanic Clouds centered on background quasars. We used these data to determine the proper motions of the LMC and SMC to better than 5% and 15% respectively. The results had a number of unexpected implications for the Milky Way-LMC-SMC system. The implied three-dimensional velocities were larger than previously believed and close to the escape velocity in a standard 10^12 solar mass Milky Way dark halo, implying that the Clouds may be on their first passage. Also, the relative velocity between the LMC and SMC was larger than expected, leaving open the possibility that the Clouds may not be bound to each other. To further verify and refine our results we requested an additional epoch of data in Cycle 16 which is being executed with WFPC2/PC due to the failure of ACS. We present the results of an ongoing analysis of these WFPC2 data which indicate good consistency with the two-epoch results.
The combination of the unprecedented spatial resolution attainable with WFPC2 on board HST and of the large collecting area of the VLT makes it possible to study in detail the low mass pre-Main Sequence stars in galaxies other than our own. Here we present the results of our studies of two star forming environments in our closest galactic neighbor, the Large Magellanic Cloud: the region around Supernova 1987A and the double cluster NGC 1850.
We present a measurement of the systemic proper motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from astrometry with the High Resolution Camera (HRC) of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We observed LMC fields centered on 21 background QSOs that were discovered from their optical variability in the MACHO database. The QSOs are distributed homogeneously behind the central few degrees of the LMC. With 2 epochs of HRC data and a ~2 year baseline we determine the proper motion of the LMC to better than 5% accuracy: mu_W = -2.03 +/- 0.08 mas/yr; mu_N = 0.44 +/- 0…
Accurate physical parameters of newborn massive stars are essential ingredients to shed light on their formation, which is still an unsolved problem. The rare class of compact H II regions in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), termed ``high-excitation blobs'' (HEBs), presents a unique opportunity to acquire this information. These objects (~ 4" to 10", ~ 1 to 3 pc, in diameter) harbor the youngest massive stars of the OB association/molecular cloud complexes in the MCs accessible through high-resolution near-IR and optical techniques. We present a brief overview of the results obtained with HST main…
We present $V$ and $I$ photometry, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, for $\sim 15,800$ stars in a field in the inner disk of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We confirm previous results indicating that an intense star formation event, probably corresponding to the formation of the LMC disk, occurred a few times $10^9$ years ago. We find a small but real difference between our field and one further out in the disk observed by Gallagher et al (1996): either star formation in the inner disk commenced slightly earlier, or the stars are slightly more metal rich. We also find evidence for a later…
Planetary Nebulae (PNs) in the Magellanic Clouds are studied to understand stellar populations and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars in different chemical environments. Using HST observations from our LMC and SMC PN morphological survey and from the HST Data Archive, we look at the relations between PN morphology and their evolution and populations. In this paper we show some of our recent results on these relations, in an historical context.
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of new planetary nebulae (PNe) that were discovered in the Reid-Parker AAO/UKST H-alpha survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud. These serendipitous observations from various HST programs yield independent confirmations of 6 PNe; one other detected nebula may also be a PN, and one appears to be a region of diffuse emission. The high resolution HST archival images enable us to determine the physical sizes, the nebular morphology, and related features of these new PNe in detail for the first time. In a few cases we were also able to identify the centra…
High spatial resolution imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope allowed us to resolve the compact HII, region N81 lying in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We show the presence of a tight cluster of newborn massive stars embedded in this nebular ``blob'' of about 10 arcsecs, across. This is the first time the stellar content and internal morphology of such an object is uncovered. These are among the youngest massive stars in this galaxy accessible to direct observations at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. Six of them are grouped in the core region of about 2 arcsecs diameter, with a pair …
We present the results of our investigation on the phenomenon of mass segregation in young star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. HST/WFPC2 observations on NGC 1818, NGC 2004 & NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud and NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud have been used for the application of diagnostic tools for mass segregation: i) the radial density profiles of the clusters for various mass groups and ii) their mass functions (MFs) at various radii around their centres. All four clusters are found to be mass segregated, but each one in a different manner. Specifically not all the cluster…
As a part of an ongoing effort to characterise the young stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we present HST-WFPC2 broad and narrow band imaging of two fields with recent star formation activity in the Tarantula region. A population of objects with Halpha and/or Balmer continuum excess was identified. On account of the intense Halpha emission (equivalent widths up to several tens of Angstroms), its correlation with the Balmer continuum excess and the stars' location on the HR diagram, we interpret them as low mass (~1-2 Mo) Pre-Main Sequence stars. In this framework, the data sho…
We report the serendipitous discovery of a peculiar main sequence in archived Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations of the young star cluster NGC 2011 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The bright part of this main sequence exhibits a prominent double, fork-like feature, as if it consists of twin main sequences, one of them being redder. The color-magnitude diagram, constructed from the stars found in the only available WFPC2 field of the cluster, is used to distinguish the stars according to their membership to each of these sequences and to study their spatial distribution. We find that ther…
We investigate the influence of blending on the Cepheid distance scale. Blending leads to systematically low distances to galaxies observed with HST, and therefore to systematically high estimates of the Hubble constant H_0. We select a sample of 43 long-period, large-amplitude Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, from the catalog recently released by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. We then model the effects of blending, as observed by HST at large distances, by adding the V,I-bands contributions from nearby bright stars. We find that the derived distance modulus would be too …
We present an analysis of the deepest pure-UV observations with the highest angular resolution ever performed, a set of 12 exposures with the HST WFPC2 and F160BW filter obtained in parallel observing mode, which cover $\sim$12 square arcminutes in the LMC, North of the bar and in the ``general field'' regime of the LMC. The 341 independent measurements of 198 objects represent an accumulated exposure of $\geq 2 10^4$ sec and reveal stars as faint as m$_{UV}\simeq$22 mag. The observations show that $\sim 2/3$ of the UV emission from the LMC is emitted by our HST-detected UV stars in the field,…
We have measured the present accretion rate of roughly 800 low-mass (~1-1.4 Mo) pre-Main Sequence stars in the field of Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, Z~0.3 Zo). It is the first time that this fundamental parameter for star formation is determined for low-mass stars outside our Galaxy. The Balmer continuum emission used to derive the accretion rate positively correlates with the Halpha excess. Both these phenomena are believed to originate from accretion from a circumstellar disk so that their simultaneous detection provides an important confirmation of the pre-Main Sequen…
We present V and I equivalent HST/WFPC2 photometry of two areas in the Large Magellanic Cloud: The southern part of the stellar association LH 52, located on the western edge of the super-shell LMC 4, and a field between two associations, which is located on the southwestern edge of the shell, and which accounts for the general background field of the galaxy. The HST/WFPC2 observations reach magnitudes as faint as V=25 mag, much deeper than have been observed earlier in stellar associations in the LMC. We determine the MF for main-sequence stars in the areas. Its slope (Gamma) in both areas is…
We present the first results of our study of stellar populations in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds based on multi-band WFPC2 observations of "random" fields taken as part of the "pure parallel" programme carried out with the HST as a service to the community.
We present images and slitless spectra which were obtained in HST surveys of Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. These new data on 59 PNe (54 in the LMC and five in the SMC) permit us to determine the nebular dimensions and morphology in the monochromatic light of several emission lines: Halpha, [N II] lambda 6583 and [O III] lambda 5007, plus others of varying ionization, including [O I], He I, and [S II]. We describe the nebular morphology and related features in detail. This survey, when combined with similar…
We have measured the absolute proper motion of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy from a combination of photographic plate material and HST WFPC2 data that provide a time baseline of up to 50 years. The extragalactic reference frame consists of 8 QSO images and 48 galaxies. The absolute proper motion is mu_alpha cos(delta) = 0.59 +-0.16 mas/yr and mu_delta = -0.15 +- 0.16 mas/yr. The corresponding orbit of Fornax is polar, with an eccentricity of 0.27, and a radial period of 4.5 Gyr. Fornax's current location is near pericenter. The direction of the motion of Fornax supports the notion that Fo…
We discuss the young population of stars and clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. We present the discovery of pre-main sequence candidates in the nebula N~11 in the Large Magellanic Clouds using HST ACS photometry. The comparison of the Colour-Magnitude diagram with pre-main sequence tracks and the presence of Spitzer objects YSO I and II suggest that the star formation has been active for a long period in the region, from a few $10^5$ yrs to several Myr ago
Planetary Nebulae (PNs) in the Magellanic Clouds offer the unique opportunity to study both the population and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, in an environment that is free of the distance scale bias and the differential reddening that hinder the observations of the Galactic sample. The study of LMC and SMC PNs also offers the direct comparison of stellar populations with different metallicity. The relative proximity of the Magellanic Clouds allows detailed spectroscopic analysis of the PNs therein, while the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is necessary to obtain their spatially-r…
The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is crucial for the calibration of the Cosmic Distance Scale. We derive a distance to the LMC based on an analysis of ground-based photometry and HST-based spectroscopy and spectrophotometry of the LMC eclipsing binary system HV2274. Analysis of the optical light curve and HST/GHRS radial velocity curve provides the masses and radii of the binary components. Analysis of the HST/FOS UV/optical spectrophotometry provides the temperatures of the component stars and the interstellar extinction of the system. When combined, these data yield a distance…
We present medium- and broad-band Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry of a sample of 35 central stars (CSs) of Planetary Nebulae (PNs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The observations were made with the WFPC2 and STIS instruments on board the HST. By observing LMC objects, our sample is free of the distance uncertainty that is the dominate source of error in the determination of CS luminosities in Galactic PNs. By observing with the HST, we resolve the nebula and therefore we often detect the CSs unambiguously. We obtain core masses of 16 of the objects by comparing their positions on…
In this review we address the progress that has been made toward the understanding the population of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae since the last Magellanic Cloud Symposium. Planetary nebulae in the Clouds are not only important as key probes of stellar and ISM evolution in these galaxies, but also reflect the evolution of AGB stars and beyond in low-metallicity environments. We present the recent surveys results, including the wide fields ground-based search for PNe, the {\it HST} study of the resolves ejecta and their central stars, and the {\it Spitzer} analysis of the gas contents of …
We observed five central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and three in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), in the range 905-1187 Ang. We performed a model-based analysis of these spectra in conjunction with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra in the UV and optical range to determine stellar and nebular parameters. The signature of hot (T >~ 2000 K) circumstellar molecular hydrogen is found in the FUSE spectra of most objects. We also find evidence of X-rays in the wind of LMC-SMP 76.
We show the results of deep V and I HST photometry of 6 rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with different ages and metallicities. The number of stars with measured magnitudes in each cluster varies from about 3000 to 10000. We build stellar density and surface brightness profiles for the clusters and extract half-light radii and other structural parameters for each. We also obtain luminosity functions, Phi (Mv), down to Mv ~ 6 (m/msun > 0.6), and investigate their dependence with distance from the cluster centre well beyond their half-light radius. In all clusters we find a syste…
We present a measurement of the systemic proper motion of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) made using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} (\textit{HST}). We tracked the SMC's motion relative to 4 background QSOs over a baseline of approximately 2 years. The measured proper motion is : $μ_W = -1.16 \pm 0.18 \masyr, μ_N = -1.17 \pm 0.18 \masyr$. This is the best measurement yet of the SMC's proper motion. We combine this new result with our prior estimate of the proper motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from the same observing program to investiga…
We summarize recent studies of the predominantly neutral gas in the Magellanic Clouds (MC), based on combinations of high-resolution optical spectra and UV spectra obtained with IUE, HST, and FUSE. Similarities in relative gas-phase abundances for Galactic and MC sightlines with relatively low N(H) had suggested that the depletion patterns might be similar in the three galaxies -- at least where the depletions are relatively mild. New STIS spectra of one higher N(H) SMC sightline, however, have revealed significant differences, relative to the Galactic patterns, for SMC clouds characterized by…
Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae (PNs) offer insight of both the population and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, in environments that are free of the distance bias and the differential reddening that hinder the observations of the Galactic sample. The study of LMC and SMC PNs also offers the direct comparison of stellar populations with different metallicity. We present a selection of the results from our recent HST surveys, including (1) the morphological analysis of Magellanic PNs, and the statistics of the morphological samples in the LMC and the SMC; (2) the surface brightn…
High resolution observations with HST have recently allowed us to resolve and study several very tight clusters of newly born massive stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Situated in an extremely rare category of HII regions, being only 5 to 10 arcsecs across and of high excitation and extinction, these stars are just hatching from their natal molecular clouds. Since the SMC is the most metal-poor galaxy observable with very high angular resolution, this work may provide valuable templates for addressing issues of star formation in the very distant metal-poor galaxies of the early Universe.
The recent HST optical images, and the optical and ultraviolet spectra, of Magellanic planetary nebulae (PNe), together with the large data-base that has been collected in the past decade, allows unprecedented insight in the evolution of PNe and their central stars. In this paper we present a selection of recent results: The analysis of PN morphology, both in the optical and ultra-violet emission lines; the relation between nebular morphology and the chemistry produced by stellar evolution; the direct determination of the transition time from observations; and the study of the nature and evolu…
As first Paper of a series devoted to study the old stellar population in clusters and fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud, we present deep observations of NGC121 in the F555W and F814W filters, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches ~3.5 mag below the main-sequence turn-off; deeper than any previous data. We derive the age of NGC121 using both absolute and relative age-dating methods. Fitting isochrones in the ACS photometric system to the observed ridge line of NGC121, gives ages of 11.8 +- 0.5 Gyr (Teramo),…
The morphology of planetary nebulae (PNe) provides an essential tool for understanding their origin and evolution, as it reflects both the dynamics of the gas ejected during the TP-AGB phase, and the central star energetics. Here we study the morphology of 27 Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae (MCPNe) and present an analysis of their physical characteristics across morphological classes. Similar studies have been successfully carried out for galactic PNe, but were compromised by the uncertainty of individual PN distances. We present our own HST/FOC images of 15 Magellanic Cloud PNe (MCPNe) acq…
The Magellanic Clouds offer a unique variety of star forming regions seen as bright nebulae of ionized gas, related to bright young stellar associations. Nowadays, observations with the high resolving efficiency of the Hubble Space Telescope allow the detection of the faintest infant stars, and a more complete picture of clustered star formation in our dwarf neighbors has emerged. I present results from our studies of the Magellanic Clouds, with emphasis in the young low-mass pre-main sequence populations. Our data include imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys of the association LH~95 i…
As part of a large HST project to study the formation and evolution of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we present results for the Galactic bulge metal-rich globular cluster NGC6553. HST observations using WFPC2, NICMOS and STIS were obtained for this cluster. The primarily reason for studying NGC6553 is to allow the possibility to transform our NICMOS and STIS magnitudes directly into stellar masses. This is particularly important for determining the low mass end of the IMF. NGC 6553 was chosen because its metallicity, [Fe/H]$=-0.22\pm 0.05$, is representative of the metallic…
We report on the serendipitous discovery of ~ 500 low-mass candidate PMS stars in the vicinity of the stellar association LH 52 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present evidence that the red faint sequence of these stars seen in the CMD of LH 52 from HST/WFPC2 observations belongs only to the association and follows almost perfectly isochrone models for PMS stars of masses down to ~ 0.3 M_solar. We find that this feature has a Galactic counterpart and that the mass spectrum of the candidate PMS stars in LH 52 seems to correspond to a Salpeter IMF with a slope Gamma ~ -1.26 in the mass range 0…
The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has long been of key importance for the distance ladder and the distances to all galaxies, and as such many groups have provided measurements of its distance modulus (μ) with many methods and various means of calibrating each method. Before the year 2001, the many measures spanned a wide range (roughly 18.1 < μ< 18.8) with the quoted error bars being substantially smaller than the spread, and hence the consensus conclusion being that many of the measures had their uncertainties being dominated by unrecognized systematic problems. In 2001, the Hu…
We present Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) broad band imagery and optical slitless spectroscopy of three young star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). MA 1796 and MG 2 were previously known as Planetary Nebulae, and observed as such within our Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey. With the HST spatial resolution, we show that they are instead H II regions, surrounding very young star clusters. A third compact H II region, MA 1797, was serendipitously observed by us as it falls in the same frame of MA 1796. Limited nebular analysis is presented as derived from the slitless…
We attempt to determine whether the MACHO microlensing source stars are drawn from the average population of the LMC or from a population behind the LMC by examining the HST color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of microlensing source stars. We present WFPC2 HST photometry of eight MACHO microlensing source stars and the surrounding fields in the LMC. The microlensing source stars are identified by deriving accurate centroids in the ground-based MACHO images using difference image analysis (DIA) and then transforming the DIA coordinates to the HST frame. We consider in detail a model for the backgroun…
We present colour-magnitude diagrams for two rich (~10^4 Msun) Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages ~10^7 years, constructed from optical and near-infrared data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data are part of an HST project to study LMC clusters with a range of ages. In this paper we investigate the massive star content of the young clusters, and determine the cluster ages and metallicities, paying particular attention to Be star and blue straggler populations and evidence of age spreads. We compare our data to detailed stellar population simulations to investigate t…
We observed seven central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), and performed a model-based analysis of these spectra in conjunction with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra in the UV and optical range to determine the stellar and nebular parameters. Most of the objects show wind features, and they have effective temperatures ranging from 38 to 60 kK with mass-loss rates of ~= 5x10^-8 Msun/yr. Five of the objects have typical LMC abundances. One object (SMP LMC 61) is a [WC4] star, and we fit its spectra w…
The HST proper motion (PM) measurements of the Clouds have severe implications for their interaction history with the Milky Way (MW) and with each other. The Clouds are likely on their first passage about the MW and the SMC's orbit about the LMC is better described as quasi-periodic rather than circular. Binary L/SMC orbits that satisfy observational constraints on their mutual interaction history (e.g. the formation of the Magellanic Bridge during a collision between the Clouds ~300 Myr ago) can be located within 1 sigma of the mean PMs. However, these binary orbits are not co-located with th…
We present high spatial resolution HST imaging of the LMC compact HII region N159-5. This high excitation blob is revealed to be a `papillon' or butterfly-shaped ionized nebula with the `wings' separated by ~2.3" (0.6 pc). Two subarcsecond features resembling a `smoke ring' and a `globule' are detected in the wings, the origin of which is briefly discussed. N159-5 may represent a new type of HII region in the Magellanic Clouds overlooked so far because of insufficient spatial resolution. Our images also show a strikingly turbulent medium around the Papillon in the giant HII region N159, which …
PSR B0540-69 is the Crab twin in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Age, energetic and overall behaviour of the two pulsars are very similar. The same is true for the general appearance of their pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). Analysis of Hubble Space Telescope images spanning 10 years unveiled significant variability in the PWN surrounding PSR B0540-69, with a hot spot moving at ~0.04c. Such behaviour, reminiscent of the variability observed in the Crab nebula along the counter-jet direction, may suggest an alternative scenario for the geometry of the system. The same data were used to assess the pulsar…
We present high S/N integrated spectra of 24 star clusters in the LMC obtained using the FLAIR spectrograph at the UK Schmidt. The spectra have been placed onto the Lick/IDS system in order to test the calibration of Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models. We have compared the SSP-predicted metallicities of the clusters with literature Ca-Triplet values, and find that there is good agreement in the range --2.10 < [Fe/H] < 0. However, the magnesium indices systematically predict higher metallicities than iron, among the possible explanations for this are that the LMC clusters possess [alpha/Fe]…
We present a differential study of 500 Magellanic Cepheids with 3 million measurements obtained as a by-product of the EROS microlensing survey. The data-set is unbiased and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. We investigate the pulsational properties of the Cepheids as a function of metallicity and the constraints they give to stellar pulsation, stellar evolution theory and opacities. Moreover, our empirical analysis shows a small metallicity effect on the period-luminosity relation which has a significant implication to recent distance estimates based…
We present a new analysis of the diffuse gas in the Magellanic Bridge (RA>3h) based on HST/STIS E140M and FUSE spectra of 2 early-type stars lying within the Bridge and a QSO behind it. We derive the column densities of HI (from Lyα), NI, OI, ArI, SiII, SII, and FeII of the gas in the Bridge. Using the atomic species, we determine the first gas-phase metallicity of the Magellanic Bridge, [Z/H]=-1.02+/-0.07 toward one sightline, and -1.7<[Z/H]<-0.9 toward the other one, a factor 2 or more smaller than the present-day SMC metallicity. Using the metallicity and N(HI), we show that the Bridge gas …
We have obtained HST and ground-based observations of a sample of 20 O-type stars in the LMC and SMC, including six of the hottest massive stars known (subtypes O2-3) in the R136 cluster. In general, these data include (a) the HST UV spectra in order to measure the terminal velocities of the stellar winds, (b) high signal-to-noise, blue-optical data where the primary temperature- and gravity-sensitive photospheric lines are found, and (c) nebular-free H-alpha profiles, which provide the mass-loss rates. The line-blanketed non-LTE atmosphere code FASTWIND was then used to determine the physical…
We show that the luminosity dependence of the red clump stars on age and metallicity can cause a difference of up to < ~0.6 mag in the mean absolute I magnitude of the red clump between different stellar populations. We show that this effect may resolve the apparent ~0.4 mag discrepancy between red clump-derived distance moduli to the Magellanic Clouds and those from, e.g., Cepheid variables. Taking into account the population effects on red clump luminosity, we determine a distance modulus to the LMC of 18.36 +/- 0.17 mag, and to the SMC of 18.82 +/- 0.20 mag. Our alternate red clump LMC dist…
We determine the age, metallicity and initial mass function of three clusters, namely NGC 265, K~29, NGC 290, located in the main body of the Small Magellanic Cloud. In addition, we derive the history of star formation in the companion fields. We make use of ACS/WFC HST archive data. For the clusters, the age and metallicity are derived fitting the integrated luminosity function with single synthetic stellar population by means of the $χ^2$ minimization. For the companion fields, the history of star formation is derived using the $χ^2$ minimization together with the downhill-simplex method. For…
We report the discovery of a rich population of low mass stars in the young, massive star forming region N66/NGC346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, from deep V, I and H alpha images taken with the HST/ACS. These stars have likely formed together with the NGC346 cluster, ~3-5 Myr ago. Their magnitude and colors are those of pre-main sequence stars in the mass range 0.6-3 Mo, mostly concentrated in the main cluster, but with secondary subclusters spread over a region across ~45 pc. These subclusters appear to be spatially coincident with previously known knots of molecular gas identified in groun…
We present a study on the central stars (CSs) of Planetary Nebulae (PNe) observed in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph instrument on-board the HST. The stellar magnitudes have been measured using broad-band photometry, and Zanstra analysis of the nebulae provided the stellar temperatures. From the location of the CSs on the HR diagram, and by comparing the observed CSs with current models of stellar evolution, we infer the CSs masses. We examine closely the possibility of light contamination in the bandpass from an unrecognized stellar companion, an…
Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) offer the unique opportunity to study both the Population and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, by means of the morphological type of the nebula. Using observations from our LMC PN morphological survey, and including images available in the HST Data Archive, and published chemical abundances, we find that asymmetry in PNe is strongly correlated with a younger stellar Population, as indicated by the abundance of elements that are unaltered by stellar evolution (Ne, Ar, S). While similar results have been obtained for Galac…
We present a study of the LMC compact HII region N11A using Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations which resolve N11A and reveal its unknown nebular and stellar features. The presence of a sharp ionization front extending over more than 4'' (1 pc) and fine structure filaments as well as larger loops indicate an environment typical of massive star formation regions, in agreement with high [OIII]/Hb line ratios. N11A is a young region, as deduced from its morphology, reddening, and especially high local concentration of dust, as indicated by the Balmer decrement map. Our observations also r…
NGC 602 is a young stellar cluster located in a peripheral region of the Small Magellanic Cloud known as the wing. Far from the main body of the galaxy and abutting the Magellanic Bridge, the SMC's wing is characterized by low gas and stellar content. With deep optical imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have discovered an extensive pre-Main Sequence (PMS) population, with stellar masses in the range 0.6-3 Solar masses. These low mass PMS stars formed coevally with the central cluster about 4 Myr ago. Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) …
We have used HST-WFPC2 multiband observations of a field around SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud to measure its distance from the Sun. The observations allowed us to carefully determine the interstellar extinction along the line of sight to a large number of stars and to measure the LMC distance by using two stellar distance indicators: the Red Clump and the Tip of the Red Giant Branch. From an application of the Red Clump method we obtain a distance modulus (m-M)o,rc(LMC)=18.59+-0.04+-0.08 mag (statistical plus systematic error), in good agreement with the distance derived by using the …
Using high-resolution imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope, we study the Large Magellanic Cloud HII region N160A and uncover several striking features of this complex massive star-forming site. The two compact high excitation HII blobs (HEBs) A1 and A2 are for the first time resolved and their stellar content and morphology is revealed. A1, being of higher excitation, is powered by a single massive star whose strong wind has created a surrounding bubble. A2 harbors several exciting stars enshrouded inside large quantities of dust. The whole N160A nebula is energized by three star clusters f…
We present the analysis of deep colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 6 stellar fields in the LMC. The data were obtained using HST/WFPC2 in the I and V filters, reaching V=26.5. We discuss and apply a method of correcting CMDs for photometric incompleteness. A method to generate artificial CMDs based on a model star formation history is also developed. This method incorporates photometric error effects, unresolved binaries, reddening and allows use of different forms of the initial mass function and of the SFH itself. We use the Partial Models Method, as presented by Gallart and others, for CMD…
We present quantitative studies of 8 late O and early B-type supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds using far-ultraviolet FUSE, ultraviolet IUE/HST and optical VLT-UVES spectroscopy. Temperatures, mass-loss rates and CNO abundances are obtained using the non-LTE, spherical, line-blanketed model atmosphere code of Hillier & Miller (1998). We support recent results for lower temperatures of OB-type supergiants as a result of stellar winds and blanketing, which amounts to ~2000 K at B0 Ia. In general, H$α$ derived mass-loss rates are consistent with UV and far-UV spectroscopy, although from conside…
We review our understanding of the kinematics of the LMC and the SMC, and their orbit around the Milky Way. The line-of-sight velocity fields of both the LMC and SMC have been mapped with high accuracy using thousands of discrete traces, as well as HI gas. The LMC is a rotating disk for which the viewing angles have been well-established using various methods. The disk is elliptical in its disk plane. The disk thickness varies depending on the tracer population, with V/sigma ranging from 2-10 from the oldest to the youngest population. For the SMC, the old stellar population resides in a spher…
We present the detection of an intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence population embedded in the nebular filaments surrounding the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using HST/NICMOS. In addition to four previously known luminous Class I infrared ``protostars,'' the NICMOS data reveal 20 new sources with intrinsic infrared excess similar to Galactic pre-main sequence stars. Based on their infrared brightness, these objects can be identified as the LMC equivalent of Galactic pre-main sequence stars. The faintest LMC Young Stellar Objects in the sample have colors similar to T Ta…
The second largest HII region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, N11B has been surveyed in the near IR.We present JHKs images of the N11B nebula. These images are combined with CO(1-0) emission line data and with archival NTT and HST/WFPC2 optical images to address the star formation activity of the region.IR photometry of all the IR sources detected is given. We confirm that a second generation of stars is currently forming in the N11B region. Our IR images show the presence of several bright IR sources which appear located towards the molecular cloud as seen from the CO emission in the area.Severa…
