In this review we address the progress that has been made toward the understanding the population of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae since the last Magellanic Cloud Symposium. Planetary nebulae in the Clouds are not only important as key probes of stellar and ISM evolution in these galaxies, but also reflect the evolution of AGB stars and beyond in low-metallicity environments. We present the recent surveys results, including the wide fields ground-based search for PNe, the {\it HST} study of the resolves ejecta and their central stars, and the {\it Spitzer} analysis of the gas contents of these ejecta. Finally, we show how Magellanic Cloud PNe can be used to constraint the distance scale of galactic PNe.
This review contains: (1) the scientific motivations for studying Planetary Nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds; (2) a review of this field of study, from the origins to the most recent results, focusing on the papers that have been published since the last IAU Symposium on Planetary Nebulae; (3) a review of the Hubble contribution to the field, from the early results to our own Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebula program.
Planetary Nebulae (PNs) in the Magellanic Clouds are studied to understand stellar populations and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars in different chemical environments. Using HST observations from our LMC and SMC PN morphological survey and from the HST Data Archive, we look at the relations between PN morphology and their evolution and populations. In this paper we show some of our recent results on these relations, in an historical context.
We observed five central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and three in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), in the range 905-1187 Ang. We performed a model-based analysis of these spectra in conjunction with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra in the UV and optical range to determine stellar and nebular parameters. The signature of hot (T >~ 2000 K) circumstellar molecular hydrogen is found in the FUSE spectra of most objects. We also find evidence of X-rays in the wind of LMC-SMP 76.
An analysis is made of the abundances of planetary nebulae (PN) in the Galaxy (MW), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data has been gathered by the IAG/USP group in a homogeneous procedure, involving observational techniques, data acquisition and reduction. Emphasis is placed on distance-independent correlations, which are particularly important for PN in the galactic disk. We have analyzed ISO SWS 01 observations for 61 proto-planetary nebulae candidates and classified their spectra according to their dominant chemistry. On the basis of our classification and the more general classification of SWS 01 spectra by Kraemer et al. (2002) we discuss the connection between proto-planetary nebulae candidates and planetary nebulae, with emphasis on possible precursors of planetary nebulae with [WR] central stars.
The recent HST optical images, and the optical and ultraviolet spectra, of Magellanic planetary nebulae (PNe), together with the large data-base that has been collected in the past decade, allows unprecedented insight in the evolution of PNe and their central stars. Planetary nebulae (PNe) exist in a range of different morphologies, from very simple and symmetric round shells, to elliptical, bipolar, and even quadrupolar shapes. They present extremely complex ensembles of filaments, knots, ansae, and shell multiplicity. It is then overwhelmingly complicated to derive reasonable evolutionary paths to justify the observed shapes of PNe. The confrontation between the evolution of the shells and that of the central stars is needed to understand the origin of the morphological variety. High quality spectrophotometric observations of 30 Planetary Nebulae in the Galactic Bulge have been made. Accurate reddenings, plasma parameters, and abundances of He,O,N,S,Ar,Cl are derived. We find the abundances of O,S,Ar in the Planetary Nebulae in the Galactic Bulge to be comparable with the abundances of the Planetary Nebulae in the Disk, high abundances being maybe slightly more frequent in the Bulge. We present preliminary results from spectral observations of four candidate radio sources co-identified with known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These were made using the Radcliffe 1.9-meter telescope in Sutherland, South Africa. These radio PNe were originally found in Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) surveys of the SMC at 1.42 and 2.37 GHz, and were further confirmed by new high resolution ATCA images at 6 and 3 cm (4"/2"). We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of new planetary nebulae (PNe) that were discovered in the Reid-Parker AAO/UKST H-alpha survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud. These serendipitous observations from various HST programs yield independent confirmations of 6 PNe; one other detected nebula may also be a PN, and one appears to be a region of diffuse emission. The high resolution HST archival images enable us to determine the physical sizes, the nebular morphology, and related features of these new PNe in detail for the first time. Using two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate the interaction of a collimated fast wind (CFW) interacting with a spherical asymptotic giant branch (AGB) wind as the mechanism for shaping proto-planetary nebulae and young planetary nebulae. In particular, we compare our simulations to the observations of an evolved PPN with multiple, highly collimated lobes, CRL 618.
We present spectroscopy of planetary nebulae in M32 and in the bulge of M31 that we obtained with the MOS spectrograph at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Our sample includes 30 planetary nebulae in M31 and 9 planetary nebulae in M32. We also observed one H II region in the disk of M31. We detected [O III]$λ$4363 in 18 of the planetary nebulae, 4 in M32 and 14 in the bulge of M31. We use our line intensities to derive electron temperatures and oxygen abundances for the planetary nebulae.

As an ongoing study of Magellanic Cloud PNe we have obtained UV spectra of 9 PNe in the SMC to measure their carbon abundances. The spectra have been acquired with ACS HRC/PR200L and SBC/PR130L. The ACS prisms give a reasonable resolution in the range of 1200 -- 2500 A to detect the C IV, C III], and C II] nebular emission, essential for chemical studies of the PNe. The carbon abundances of SMC PNe, together with those of the LMC previously determined with STIS spectroscopy, will allow a comparative study of nebular enrichment and provide the basis for comparison with stellar evolution models …
We examine recent studies on the formation rate of planetary nebulae and find this rate to be about one-third of the formation rate of white dwarfs. This implies than only about one-third of all planetary nebulae that evolve to form white dwarfs are actually bright enough to be observed. This finding corresponds with the claim that it is necessary for a binary companion to interact with the asymptotic giant branch stellar progenitor for the descendant planetary nebulae to be bright enough to be detected. Diagnostic diagrams of electron density - excitation for a sample of 613 planetary nebulae are presented. The present extensive sample allows the definition of new statistical limits for the distribution of planetary nebulae in the log [Ha/[SII]] vs log [Ha/[NII]], log [Ha/[SII]] vs [SII] 6717/6731 and log [Ha/[NII]] vs [SII] 6717/6731 planes. The diagrams provide a good representation of the ranges of physical conditions, indicated by these emission line ratios, present in planetary nebulae during different evolutionary stages.
The results of long-term spectral observations were used to search for changes in planetary nebulae and emission-line stars. Significant increase of excitation degree is found in two objects: M1-6 and M1-11.
We present a new grid (solar and halo abundance ratios) of state-of-the-art fully line-blanketed NLTE model atmospheres which covers the parameter range of central stars of planetary nebulae. The grid is available at the WWW.
Eleven objects that have been reported as proto-planetary nebula or as young planetary nebulae that show very extended Halpha wings are presented. The extension of these wings is larger than 800 km/s. Data for two symbiotic stars that show this same characteristic is also presented. Raman scattering is the mechanism that best explains the wings in 10 of the PNe and in the 2 symbiotic stars. In the PN IRAS 20462+3416 the wing profile can be explained by very intense stellar wind.
Hαand [O III] narrow band, wide field (7 * 7 degree), CCD images of the Small Magellanic Cloud were compared and a catalogue of candidate planetary nebulae and Hαemission-line stars was compiled. The catalogue contains 131 planetary nebulae candidates, 23 of which are already known to be or are probable planetary nebulae or very low excitation objects. Also, 218 emission-line candidates have been identified with 113 already known. Our catalogue therefore provides a useful supplement to those of Meyssonnier & Azzopardi (1993) and Sanduleak, MacConnell & Davis Phillip (1978). Further observation…
In a recent work Ciardullo et al. (1999) list 19 planetary nebulae surveyed by the Hubble Space Telescope for the presence of resolved visual binary companions of their central stars. For ten planetary nebulae they argue for probable physical association of the resolved stars with the central stars, while for nine the association is less likely. Such stellar companions, at orbital separations of hundreds to thousands of astronomical units, will cause the structures of these planetary nebulae to possess a non-axisymmetrical signatures. While in the past spherodicity was assumed, and still is used in modeling of most nebulae, we know now that only a small number of planetary nebulae (PNe) are really spherical or at least nearly round. Round planetary nebulae are the minority of objects. In the case of those objects that underwent a very late helium flash (called VLTP objects or ``born-again'' PNe) it seems to be different. The first, hydrogen-rich PN, is more or less round. The ejecta from the VLTP event, in contrast, are extremely asymmetrical.
I discuss some observational properties of aspherical nebulae around massive stars, and conclusions inferred for how they may have formed. Whether or not these ideas are applicable to the shaping of planetary nebulae is uncertain, but the observed similarities between some PNe and bipolar nebulae around massive stars is compelling. In the well-observed case of Eta Carinae, several lines of observational evidence point to a scenario where the shape of its bipolar nebula resulted from an intrinsically bipolar explosive ejection event rather than an interacting winds scenario occurring after ejec…
The chemical abundances of neon and sulfur for 25 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds are presented. These abundances have been derived using mainly infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The implications for the chemical evolution of these elements are discussed. A comparison with similarly obtained abundances of Galactic PNe and HII regions and Magellanic Clouds HII regions is also given. The average neon abundances are 6.0x10(-5) and 2.7x10(-5) for the PNe in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds respectively. These are ~1/3 and 1/6 of the average abundances of Galacti…
We present a systematic study of line widths in the [\ion{O}{3}]$λ$5007 and H$α$ lines for a sample of 86 planetary nebulae in the Milky Way bulge based upon spectroscopy obtained at the \facility{Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in the Sierra San Pedro Mártir (OAN-SPM)} using the Manchester Echelle Spectrograph. We present images and slitless spectra which were obtained in HST surveys of Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. We present mid-infrared Spitzer spectra of eleven planetary nebulae in the Galactic Bulge. We derive argon, neon, sulfur, and oxygen abundances for them using mainly infrared line fluxes combined with some optical line fluxes from the literature. Due to the high extinction toward the Bulge, the infrared spectra allow us to determine abundances for certain elements more accurately that previously possible with optical data alone. Abundances of argon and sulfur (and in most cases neon and oxygen) in planetary nebulae in the Bulge give the abundances of the interstellar medium at the time their p…
We consider the possibility of cluster membership for 13 planetary nebulae that are located in close proximity to open clusters lying in their lines of sight. The short lifetimes and low sample size of intermediate-mass planetary nebulae with respect to nearby open clusters conspire to reduce the probability of observing a true association. Not surprisingly, line of sight coincidences almost certainly exist for 7 of the 13 cases considered. Ring nebulae are often found around massive stars such as Wolf-Rayet stars, OB and Of stars and Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs). In this paper we report on two ring nebulae around blue supergiants in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The star Sk-69 279 is classified as O9f and is surrounded by a closed shell with a diameter of 4.5 pc. Our echelle observations show an expansion velocity of 14 km/s and a high [N II]6583A/H alpha ratio. This line ratio suggests nitrogen abundance enhancement consistent with those seen in ejectas from LBVs. Thus the ring nebula around Sk-69 279 is a circumstellar bubble.…
The methods of abundance determinations in HII regions and planetary nebulae are described, with emphasis on the underlying assumptions and inherent problems. Recent results on abundances in Galactic HII regions and in Galactic and extragalactic Planetary Nebulae are reviewed.
Near-infrared photometry of planetary nebulae (PNe) allows the classification of those objects. We present the largest homogeneous sample so far, obtained with the Deep Near Infrared Southern Sky Survey (DENIS).
We have carried out a systematic search for the molecular ion CO+ in a sample of 8 protoplanetary and planetary nebulae in order to determine the origin of the unexpectedly strong HCO+ emission previously detected in these sources. An understanding of the HCO+ chemistry may provide direct clues to the physical and chemical evolution of planetary nebulae. We find that the integrated intensity of the CO+ line may be correlated with that of HCO+, suggesting that the reaction of CO+ with molecular hydrogen may be an important formation route for HCO+ in these planetary nebulae.
Two planetary nebulae are shown to belong to the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, on the basis of their radial velocities. This is only the second dwarf spheroidal galaxy, after Fornax, found to contain planetary nebulae. Their existence confirms that this galaxy is at least as massive as the Fornax dwarf spheroidal which has a single planetary nebula, and suggests a mass of a few times 10**7 solar masses. We briefly describe the properties of the confirmed spectroscopic sample of intracluster planetary nebulae recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. We find 23 bonafide intracluster planetary nebulae and 8 high redshift (z ~ 3.1) Lyalpha emitters identified by their broad asymmetric emission line.
We present chemical abundances for planetary nebulae and H II regions in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 based upon spectroscopy obtained at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope using the Multi-Object Spectrograph. This review describes some general properites of proto-planetary nebulae with particular emphasis on the recent work of morpholgical studies. The weight of observational evidence shows that proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) are most certainly axisymmetric like planetary nebulae. Recent work suggests two subclasses of PPNe optical morphology, DUst-Prominent Longitudinally-EXtended (DUPLEX) and Star-Obvious Low-level Elongated (SOLE). We present a study on the central stars (CSs) of Planetary Nebulae (PNe) observed in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph instrument on-board the HST. The stellar magnitudes have been measured using broad-band photometry, and Zanstra analysis of the nebulae provided the stellar temperatures. From the location of the CSs on the HR diagram, and by comparing the observed CSs with current models of stellar evolution, we infer the CSs masses. Stars at the top of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) can exhibit maser emission from molecules like SiO, H2O and OH. As the star evolves to the planetary nebula phase, mass-loss stops and ionization of the envelope begins, making the masers disappear progressively. The OH masers in PNe can be present in the envelope for periods of ~1000 years but the water masers can survive only hundreds of years. Then, water maser emission is not expected in planetary nebulae! We discuss the unambiguous detection of water maser emission in two planetary nebulae: K 3-35 and IRAS 17347-3139.
Important results achieved over the last years on supernova remnants, planetary nebulae and superbubbles are briefly reviewed in the context of X-ray observations. I intend to review the important open scientific questions in these fields, and the specific contributions that can be made by XMM-Newton.

We calculate multicomponent radiatively driven stellar wind models suitable for central stars of planetary nebulae. Some of these stellar winds may be adequately modelled using one-component models, however for some of them multicomponent models are necessary. We obtain a range of stellar parameters for different types of mass-loss.
In this work, a review is given of some recent results and problems involved in the determination of chemical abundances of galactic planetary nebulae, particularly regarding disk and bulge objects.
While symbiotic Miras and planetary nebulae are hard to distinguish by optical spectroscopy, their near infrared colors differ. We propose the near infrared two-color diagram to be an excellent tool to easily distinguish these two classes of objects.
We report the results from an optical imaging survey of proto-planetary nebula candidates using the HST. We exploited the high resolving power and wide dynamic range of HST and detected nebulosities in 21 of 27 sources. All detected reflection nebulosities show elongation, and the nebula morphology bifurcates depending on the degree of the central star obscuration. We have fitted the HST images and the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of three proto-planetary nebulae (PPN) with a 2-D radiation transfer model. The geometric and mass loss properties of these PPN are also derived.
Planetary nebulae (PN) represent the evolutionary fate of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stellar envelopes, thus are ideally suited to study the chemical impact of AGB stars. Stellar evolution predict elemental enrichment through the AGB evolution, and convective dredge-up episodes allow the products of stellar evolution to reach the stellar outer layers. Planetary nebulae are probes of these processes, and are also probes of the environment at the time of formation of their progenitors, through the elements not affected by AGB evolution. The theory of the interaction of planetary nebulae with the interstellar medium is important for the interpretation of nebular morphologies that deviate from point symmetry. It can be used to probe the interstellar medium and its magnetic field. We emphasize in this review the role of hydrodynamical instabilities in the interaction.
We compare the populations of Red Giant stars and Planetary Nebulae in the Galactic Bulge, in the light of recent determinations of their abundances patterns. We find both populations to be compatible. From the planetary nebulae, we find evidences that the Bulge did not form stars recently. The whole abundances pattern remains however puzzling, some elements favoring a quick evolution of the Galactic Bulge (Mg and Ti), and others a much slower one (He, O, Si, S, Ar and Ca).
Planetary nebulae (PN) are an essential tool in the study of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and galaxies of the Local Group, particularly the Magellanic Clouds. In this work, we present some recent results on the determination of chemical abundances from PN in the Large and Small Magellanic clouds, and compare these results with data from our own Galaxy and other galaxies in the Local Group. The morphology of planetary nebulae (PNe) provides an essential tool for understanding their origin and evolution, as it reflects both the dynamics of the gas ejected during the TP-AGB phase, and the central star energetics. Here we study the morphology of 27 Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae (MCPNe) and present an analysis of their physical characteristics across morphological classes. We draw attention to the extreme filamentary structures seen in high-resolution optical images of certain planetary nebulae. We determine the physical properties of the filaments in the nebulae IC 418, NGC 3132, and NGC 6537, and based on their large length-to-width ratios, longitudinal coherence, and morphology, we suggest that they may be signatures of the underlying magnetic field. The fields needed for the coherence of the filaments are probably consistent with those measured in the precursor circumstellar envelopes. We report NICMOS wide-band and polarimetric observations of four proto-planetary nebulae. Molecular hydrogen emission is detected near the ends of the bipolar lobes of IRAS 17150-3224, which is evidence for the interaction of a fast, collimated outflow with the remnant of the asymptotic giant branch wind.
Studies of the relationship between planetary nebula morphology and the evolution of the central stars has long suffered from uncertainties in distance determinations, and from the bias of interstellar absorption, that are typical for Galactic PNe. We will be able to eliminate the distance errors and be assured of the sample homogeneity by studying Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) PNe with images from the Hubble Space Telescope. We report the results of a sensitive survey of young planetary nebulae in the CO J=2-1 line that significantly increases the available data on warm, dense, molecular gas in the early phases of planetary nebula formation. The observations were made using the IRAM 30 m telescope with the 3 by 3 pixel Heterodyne Receiver Array (HERA). The array provides an effective means of discriminating the CO emission of planetary nebulae in the galactic plane from contaminating emission of interstellar clouds along the line of sight. 110 planetary nebulae were observed in the survey and 40 were detected. We investigate the chemical evolution of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on abundance data of planetary nebulae (PNe). The main goal is to investigate the time evolution of the oxygen abundance in this galaxy by deriving an age-metallicity relation. Such a relation is of fundamental importance as an observational constraint of chemical evolution models of the SMC.
