We perform a systematic analysis of k-strings in the framework of the gauge/gravity correspondence. We discuss the Klebanov-Strassler supergravity background which is known to be dual to a confining supersymmetric gauge theory with chiral symmetry breaking. We obtain the k-string tension in agreement with expectations of field theory. Our main new result is the study of one-loop corrections on the string theoretic side. We explicitly find the frequency spectrum for both the bosons and the fermions for quadratic fluctuations about the classical supergravity solution. Further we use the massless modes to compute 1/L contributions to the one loop corrections to the k-string energy. This corresponds to the Luscher term contribution to the k-string potential on the gauge theoretic side of the correspondence.
The leading term for the energy of a bound state of k-quarks and k-antiquarks is proportional to its separation L. These k-string configurations have a Luscher term associated with their quantum fluctuations which is typically a 1/L correction to the energy. We review the status of tensions and Luscher terms in the context of lattice gauge theory, Hamiltonian methods, and gauge/gravity correspondence. Furthermore we explore how different representations of the k-string manifest themselves in the gauge/gravity duality. We calculate the Luscher term for a strongly coupled SU(N) gauge theory in (…
In AdS5/CFT4 integrability the Bethe ansatz gives the spectrum of long strings, accurate up to exponentially small corrections. This is no longer true in AdS3, as we demonstrate here by studying Luscher F-terms with a massless particle running in the loop. We apply this to the classic test of Hernandez & Lopez, in which the su(2) sector Bethe equations (including one-loop dressing phase) should match the semiclassical string theory result for a circular spinning string. These calculations did not agree in AdS3xS3xT4, and we show that the sum of all massless Luscher F-terms can reproduce the di…
We calculate the Luscher term for recently suggested non-Abelian flux tubes (strings). The main feature of the non-Abelian strings is the presence of orientational zero modes associated with rotation of their color flux inside a non-Abelian subgroup. The Luscher term is determined by the number of light degrees of freedom on the string wordsheet. Unlike the standard π/12 we get Nπ/12 for non-Abelian strings in the U(N) gauge theories. Thus, the Luscher coefficient acquires a dependence on the rank of the gauge group. In the models with non-Abelian strings discussed in the literature there are …
In the present paper we derive six and seven loop formulas for the anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator in N=4 SYM from string theory using the technique of Luscher corrections. We derive analytically the integrand using the worldsheet S-matrix and evaluate the resulting integral and infinite sum using a combination of high precision numerical integration and asymptotic expansion. We use this high precision numerical result to fit the integer coefficients of zeta values in the final analytical answer. The presented six and seven loop results can be used as a cross-check with FiNLIE on t…
We analyze the holographic description of several properties of $\N=1$ confining gauge dynamics. In particular we discuss Wilson loops including the issues of a Luscher term and the broadening of the flux tubes, 't Hooft loops, baryons, instantons, chiral symmetry breaking, the gluino condensate and BPS domain walls.
We compute classical and first quantum finite-size corrections to the recently found giant magnon solutions in two different subspaces of $\mathbb{CP}^3$. We use the Lüscher approach on the recently proposed exact S-matrix for $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons theory. We compare our results with the string and algebraic curve computations and find agreement, thus providing a non-trivial test for the new $AdS_4/CFT_3$ correspondence within an integrability framework.
A brief historical synopsis of the connection between gauge theories and string theory is given. Meson configurations known as k-strings are examined from string theory via the gauge/gravity correspondence. Backgrounds dual to k-strings in both 2+1 and 3+1 are discussed. The energy of k-strings to lowest order consists of a tension term, proportional to the length, L, of the k-string, i.e., the size of the mesons in the configuration. The first quantum correction is a Coulombic 1/L correction, known as a Luscher term, plus a constant. Acquiring tensions and Luscher terms via the gauge/gravity …
We derive the perturbative four loop anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator in N=4 SYM theory from the integrable string sigma model by evaluating the finite size effects using Luscher formulas adapted to multimagnon states at weak coupling. We obtain these multiparticle generalizations of Luscher formulas by studying certain exactly solvable relativistic integrable quantum field theories. The final result involves a summation of all bound states in the mirror theory and agrees with gauge theory perturbative computations.
We discuss the impact of quadratic quantum fluctuations on the Wilson loop extracted from classical string theory. We show that a large class of models, which includes the near horizon limit of D_p branes with 16 supersymmetries, admits a Lüscher type correction to the classical potential. We confirm that the quantum determinant associated with a BPS configuration of a single quark in the AdS_5 \times S^5 model is free from divergences. We find that for the Wilson loop in that model, unlike the situation in flat space-time, the fermionic determinant does not cancel the bosonic one. For string …
We study certain properties of the low energy regime of a theory which resembles four dimensional YM theory in the framework of a non-critical holographic gravity dual. We use for the latter the near extremal $AdS_6$ non-critical SUGRA. We extract the glueball spectra that associates with the fluctuations of the dilaton, one form and the graviton and compare the results to those of the critical near extremal $D4$ model and lattice simulations. We show an area law behavior for the Wilson loop and screening for the 't Hooft loop. The Luscher term is found to be $-{3/24}\frac π{L}$. We derive the…
We compute Lüscher corrections to the effective string tension in the Pilch-Warner background, holographically dual to $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The same quantity can be calculated directly from field theory by solving the localization matrix model at large-$N$. We find complete agreement between the field-theory predictions and explicit string-theory calculation at strong coupling.
Superstring theory is one current, promising attempt at unifying gravity with the other three known forces: the electromagnetic force, and the weak and strong nuclear forces. Though this is still a work in progress, much effort has been put toward this goal. A set of specific tools which are used in this effort are gauge/gravity dualities. This thesis consists of a specific implementation of gauge/gravity dualities to describe k-strings of strongly coupled gauge theories as objects dual to Dp-branes embedded in confining supergravity backgrounds from low energy superstring field theory. Along …
Following recent work by Lambiase and Nesterenko we study in detail the interquark potential for a Nambu-Goto string with point masses attached to its ends. We obtain exact solutions to the gap equations for the Lagrange multipliers and metric components and determine the potential without simplifying assumptions. We also discuss Lüscher term and argue that it remains universal.
We consider a holographic model constructed from an intersecting brane configuration $D4/D4/\bar{D4}$ in noncritical string theory. We study the baryon in the confined phase of this supergravity by considering the source term for the baryon. Also, the thermodynamics functions are studied. Moreover, we obtain the binding energy of the baryon in this holographic QCD-like model.
Following a methodology similar to \cite{Alishahiha:2015rta}, we derive a holographic complexity for two dimensional holographic superconductors (gauge/string superconductors) with backreactions. Applying a perturbation method proposed by Kanno in Ref. \cite{kanno}, we study behaviors of the complexity for a dual quantum system near critical points. We show that when a system moves from the normal phase ($T>T_c$) to the superconductor phase ($T<T_c$), the holographic complexity will be divergent.
We identify the leading finite-size (Luscher-type) correction to the energy of open strings ending on maximal giant gravitons. In particular we obtain the leading finite size correction at weak 't Hooft coupling and in the planar limit to the energy of very short vacuum states. These results are shown to agree with certain 1, 2, 3 and 4-loop dual gauge theory perturbative calculations, which we also perform.
We calculate the one-point function of certain chiral operators, known as open Wilson lines, in the holographic Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite temperature as well as finite chemical potential for quark (baryon) number density. These operators are holographically dual to Euclidean string worldsheets bounded by the flavor branes. Their one-point functions can serve as order parameters for chiral symmetry breaking in these models. Analyzing the behavior of the dual string worldsheets with respect to temperature and chemical potential (or quark density) enables us to determine how the or…
We show that the quantum entanglement can be transmuted to a force using the holographic duality. First, we prove that there is an open string in the spectrum of the holographic fermion coupled with scalar. The string ends at two fermions and its tension vanishes in the limit of zero scalar condensation. We associate such string with a dimer and identify the scalar condensation as the degree of the dimerization. Together with divergently large entanglement entropy, the model is expected to describe the Spin Liquid. As a consistency check, we show that there is a Mott transition as the dimeriza…
We study minimal co-dimension-2 surfaces in the asymptotically flat background of extremal 3-brane solutions in ten-dimensional type IIB supergravity. A conjectured open-closed string duality combined with the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription implies that the area of the surfaces we consider could be interpreted as the entanglement entropy of a dual (3+1)-dimensional large-N, strongly-coupled open string field theory on D3-branes. As the size of the surface is varied we observe a transition from a volume law to an area law in agreement with expectations from non-locality in an open string field the…
We calculate the energy spectrum of closed strings in SU(N) gauge theories with N=2,3,4,6,8 in 2+1 dimensions to a high accuracy. We attempt to control all systematic errors, and this allows us to perform a precise comparison with different theoretical predictions. When we study the dependence of the string mass on its length L we find that the Nambu-Goto prediction is a very good approximation down to relatively short lengths, where the Luscher term alone is insufficient. We then isolate the corrections to the Luscher term, and compare them to recent theoretical predictions, which indeed seem…
We study the holographic map between long open strings, which stretch between D-branes separated in the bulk space-time, and operators in the dual boundary theory. We focus on a generalization of the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic model of QCD, where the simplest chiral condensate involves an operator of this type. Its expectation value is dominated by a semi-classical string worldsheet, as for Wilson loops. We also discuss the deformation of the model by this operator, and in particular its effect on the meson spectrum. This deformation can be thought of as a generalization of a quark mass term t…
We propose a map for extracting the holographic meaning of the metric for a class of warped AdS_3 black strings in type IIB supergravity. Our choice of holographic data is based upon a general prescription due to Papadimitriou. With this choice, we find a holographic stress tensor that is both symmetric and conserved, at least when restricted to a particular sector of the theory. Using the holographic stress tensor, we compute the energy and momentum per unit length of the black strings, as well as the conformal anomaly, and we show that the results agree with those previously obtained via cov…
Asymptotically de Sitter spaces can be described by Euclidean boundary theories with entropies given by the modified Cardy--Verlinde formula. We show that the Cardy--Verlinde formula describes a string with a rescaled tension which in fact is a string at the stretched cosmological horizon as seen from the boundary. The temperature of the boundary theory is the rescaled Hagedorn temperature of the string. Our results agree with an alternative description of asymptotically de Sitter spaces in terms of strings on the stretched horizon. The relation between the two descriptions is given by the lar…
In this paper, we compute holographically the two-point and three-point functions of giant gravitons with open strings. We consider the maximal giant graviton in $S^5$ and the string configurations corresponding to the ground states of Z=0 and Y=0 open spin chain, and the spinning string in AdS$_5$ corresponding to the derivative type impurities in Y=0 or Z=0 open spin chain as well. We treat the D-brane and open string contribution separately and find the corresponding D3-brane and string configurations in bulk which connect the composite operators at the AdS$_5$ boundary. We apply a new pres…
Based on the holographic conjecture for superstrings on Dp-brane backgrounds and the dual (p+1)-dimensional gauge theory ($0\le p\le 4$) given in hep-th/0308024 and hep-th/0405203, we continue the study of superstring amplitudes including string higher modes ($n\ne 0$). We give a prediction to the two-point functions of operators with large R-charge J. The effect of stringy modes do not appear as the form of anomalous dimensions except for p=3. Instead, it gives non-trivial correction to the two-point functions for supergravity modes. For p=4, the scalar two-point functions for any n behave li…
We perform a holographic renormalization of gravity duals to little string theories. In particular, we construct counterterms which yield a well-defined type II action for NS-sector linear dilaton backgrounds. Our methods are based on a similar recent construction in asymptotically flat spacetimes, and our work demonstrates in detail the parallels between asymptotically flat and linear dilaton boundary conditions. The counterterms guarantee that (i) the on-shell action is finite and (ii) asymptotically linear dilaton solutions are stationary points of the action under all boundary condition pr…
We review recent progress in the study of non-rational (boundary) conformal field theories and their applications to describe exact holographic backgrounds in superstring theory. We focus mainly on the example of the supersymmetric coset SL(2,R)/U(1), corresponding to the two-dimensional black hole, and its dual N=2 Liouville. In particular we discuss the modular properties of their characters, their partition function as well as the exact boundary states for their various D-branes. Then these results are used to construct the corresponding quantities in the CFT of the NS5-brane background, wi…
The equivalence between the holographic renormalization group and the soft dilaton theorem is shown for a class of wrapped metrics solutions of the string beta function equations for the bosonic string.
In this work we study various aspects of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs. We consider the construction of their string duals in Massive IIA and discuss some observables in given examples. We study the dynamics of string solitons wrapping and rotating on the Massive IIA background and show that the associated Hamiltonian system is both non-integrable and chaotic, implying the non-integrability of the dual CFT. Our procedure is analytic, using well developed mathematical techniques, and numerical, by the explicit calculation of power spectra, Lyapunov coefficients and Poincaré sections.
We analyze the resolution of the U(1)_A problem in the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic dual of large N_c QCD at finite temperature. It has been shown that in the confining phase the axial symmetry is broken at order 1/N_c, in agreement with the ideas of Witten and Veneziano. We show that in the deconfined phase the axial symmetry remains unbroken to all orders in 1/N_c. In this case the breaking is due to instantons which are described by spacelike D0-branes, in agreement with 'tHooft's resolution. The holographic dual of the symmetry breaking fermion condensate is a state of spacelike strings betw…
The recent proposal on the correspondence between the ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and string theory in the Penrose limit of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ geometry involves a few puzzles from the viewpoint of holographic principle, especially in connection with the interpretation of times. To resolve these puzzles, we propose to interpret the PP-wave strings on the basis of tunneling null geodesics connecting boundaries of the AdS geometry. Our approach predicts a direct and systematic identification of the S-matrix of Euclidean string theory in the bulk with the short-distance structure of c…
In this review article we present the calculation of the splitting rate in flat space of a macroscopic fundamental string either intersecting at a generic angle a Dp-brane or lying on it. The result is then applied, in the context of the string/gauge theory correspondence, to the study of exclusive decay rates of large spin mesons into mesons. As examples, we discuss the cases of N=4 SYM with a small number of flavors, and of QCD-like theories in the quenched approximation. In the latter context, explicit analytic formulas are given for decay rates of mesons formed either by heavy quarks or by…
We study the behaviour of the interquark potential in lattice gauge theories at high temperature, but still in the confining phase, and propose a new observable which could play in this regime the same role played by the Luscher term in the low temperature limit. This quantity is related to the exponent of the power prefactor in the effective string partition function or, equivalently, to the coefficient of the logarithmic correction in the interquark potential and, as for the usual Luscher term, its value does not depend on the particular gauge group under consideration or on the form of the …
We study baryons of arbitrary isospin in a stringy holographic QCD model. In this D4-D8 holographic setting, the flavor symmetry is promoted to a gauge symmetry in the bulk, and produces, as KK modes of the gauge field, pions and spin one mesons of low energy QCD. Baryons of arbitrary isospins are represented as instanton solitons with isospin and spin quantum numbers locked, in a manner similar to the Skyrmion model. The soliton picture leads to a natural effective field theory of arbitrary baryons interacting with mesons. Couplings of baryons to axial mesons, including pions, are dominated i…
We describe a supersymmetric example of the holographic duality between 3 dimensional vector models and higher spin gauge theories in AdS_4, first proposed in a bosonic context by Klebanov and Polyakov. We argue that a particular Fradkin-Vasiliev type supersymmetric higher spin gauge theory in AdS_4 with 16 supersymmetries is dual to the singlet sector of bilinear operators of a free N = 4, SU(N) vector model defined on the boundary. Starting from the duality between type IIB on AdS_5 \times S^5 with a D5-brane as an AdS_4 \times S^2 subspace and the 4 dimensional SU(N) SYM with a defect, we r…
We probe type IIA geometries with \emph{folded} semiclassical strings those encode the strong coupling dynamics associated with long operators in a class of SCFTs pertaining to spacetimes whose dimension vary from $6d$ down to $2d$. We particularly focus on folded string configurations those are extended through stack of flavor $ Dp $ ($ p=6,8 $) branes localized along the internal manifold. Considering some specific examples within the realm of $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ linear quivers, we show that the associated string spectrum exhibits a pole as the string approaches flavor D6 branes. We identify t…
We discuss the field theory interpretation (via holographic duality) of some recently-discovered string theory solutions with varying flux, focusing on four dimensional theories with N=2 supersymmetry and with N=1 supersymmetry which arise as the near-horizon limits of "fractional D3-branes". We argue that in the N=2 case the best interpretation of the varying flux in field theory is via a Higgs mechanism reducing the rank of the gauge group, and that there is no need to invoke a duality to explain the varying flux in this case. We discuss why a similar interpretation does not seem to apply to…
Adapting the powerful integrability-based formalism invented previously for the calculation of gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling, we develop a method for computing the holographic three point functions for the large spin limit of Gubser-Klebanov- Polyakov (GKP) strings. Although many of the ideas from the gluon scattering problem can be transplanted with minor modifications, the fact that the information of the external states is now encoded in the singularities at the vertex insertion points necessitates several new techniques. Notably, we develop a new generalized Riemann biline…
The Gaussian Hermitian matrix model was recently proposed to have a dual string description with worldsheets mapping to a sphere target space. The correlators were written as sums over holomorphic (Belyi) maps from worldsheets to the two-dimensional sphere, branched over three points. We express the matrix model correlators by using the fuzzy sphere construction of matrix algebras, which can be interpreted as a string field theory description of the Belyi strings. This gives the correlators in terms of trivalent ribbon graphs that represent the couplings of irreducible representations of su(2)…
We study the emergence of partonic behavior in scattering processes at large Mandelstam's variable $s$ from string amplitudes in holographic backgrounds. We generalize the approach of Polchinski and Strassler (2001) in two ways. (i) We analyze several holographic confining backgrounds in particular the hard wall model, the soft wall model and Witten's model. (ii) In addition to deriving the asymptotic behavior of the amplitudes at fixed angle and in the Regge limit, we also expand the amplitudes around their poles, integrate over the holographic direction and then re-sum the expansion. Due to …
To understand the time-dependent quantum correlation in expanding universes, we study the time-dependent entanglement entropy in the braneworld model. If we take into account a generalized string cloud geometry caused by uniformly distributed open strings, cosmologies on the braneworld result in the standard Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with various matter contents. On the dual field theory side, open strings are reinterpreted as a fundamental matter, while the black hole mass corresponds to the excitation energy of massless gauge bosons. In this work, we show how the string…
We compute quantum corrections to finite-size effects for various dyonic giant magnons in the AdS_4 x CP^3 in two different approaches. The off-shell algebraic curve method is used to quantize the classical string configurations in semi-classical way and to compute the corrections to the string energies. These results are compared with the F-term Lüscher formula based on the S-matrix of the AdS_4 / CFT_3. The fact that the two results match exactly provides another stringent test for the all-loop integrability conjecture and the exact S-matrix based on it.
There has been considerable recent interest in holographic complexity. The two leading conjectures on this subject hold that the quantum complexity of the boundary thermofield double state should be dual to either the volume of the Einstein-Rosen bridge connecting the two sides (CV conjecture) or to the action of the Wheeler-de-Witt patch of the bulk spacetime (CA conjecture). Although these conjectures are frequently studied in the context of pure Einstein gravity, from the perspective of string theory it is also natural to consider models of gravity in which general relativity is perturbed b…
The (F1,D2,D8) brane configuration with $Lif_4^{(2)}\times {S}^1\times S^5$ geometry is a known Lifshitz vacua supported by massive $B_{μν}$ field in type IIA theory. This system allows exact IR excitations which couple to massless modes of the fundamental string. Due to these massless modes the solutions have a flow to a dilatonic $Lif_4^{(3)}\times S^1\times S^5$ vacua in IR. We study the entanglement entropy on the boundary of this spacetime for the strip and the disc subsystems. To our surprise net entropy density of the excitations at first order is found to be independent of the typical …
We consider the growth of the action for black hole spacetime with a fundamental string. Our interest is to find the difference of the behavior between black holes with three different topologies in the scenario of complexity-action conjecture. These black holes have positive, negative and zero curvatures. We would like to calculate the action growth of these systems with a probe fundamental string according to the complexity-action conjecture. We find that for the case where the black holes have the toroidal horizon structure this probe string behaves very differently from the other two cases…
We consider type-A higher-spin gravity in AdS_4, holographically dual to a free U(N) vector model on the boundary. We study the linearized version of the Didenko-Vasiliev "BPS black hole", which we view as this theory's equivalent of the fundamental string. The Didenko-Vasiliev solution consists of gauge fields of all spins generated by a particle-like source along a bulk geodesic, and is holographically dual to a bilocal boundary operator at the geodesic's endpoints. Our first main result is a new gauge for this solution, which makes manifest its behavior under the boundary field equation. It…
We study dual conformal transformations of minimal area surfaces in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ corresponding to holographic smooth Wilson loops and some other related observables. To act with dual conformal transformations we map the string solutions to the dual space by means of T-duality, then we apply a conformal transformation and finally T-dualize back to the original space. The transformation maps between string solutions with different boundary contours. The boundary contours of the minimal surfaces are not mapped back to the AdS boundary, and the regularized area of the surface changes.
We investigate the dispersion relation of the winding closed-string states in SU(N) gauge theory defined on a d-dimensional hypertorus, in a class of effective string theories. We show that order by order in the asymptotic expansion, each energy eigenstate satisfies a relativistic dispersion relation. This is illustrated in the Luscher-Weisz effective string theory to two-loop order, where the Polyakov loop matrix elements between the vacuum and the closed string states are obtained explicitly. We attempt a generalization of these considerations to the case of compact dimensions transverse to …
In this paper we study half-BPS type IIB supergravity solutions with multiple $AdS_3\times S^3\times M_4$ asymptotic regions, where $M_4$ is either $T^4$ or $K_3$. These solutions were first constructed in [1] and have geometries given by the warped product of $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times M_4 $ over $Σ$, where $Σ$ is a Riemann surface. We show that the holographic boundary has the structure of a star graph, i.e. $n$ half-lines joined at a point. The attractor mechanism and the relation of the solutions to junctions of self-dual strings in six-dimensional supergravity are discussed. The solutions o…
We study the fate of reparametrization invariance of Wilson loops, also known as 'zig-zag' symmetry, under the RG flow using some simple cases as guidance. We restrict our analysis to large-$N$, strongly coupled CFTs and use the holographic dual description of a Wilson loop as a fundamental string embedded in asymptotically AdS spaces, at zero and nonzero temperature. We then introduce a cutoff in the holographic radial direction and integrate out the the section of the string closer to the AdS boundary in the spirit of holographic Wilsonian renormalization. We make explicit the map between Wi…
Products of large-N conformal field theories coupled by multi-trace interactions in diverse dimensions are used to define quantum multi-gravity (multi-string theory) on a union of (asymptotically) AdS spaces. One-loop effects generate a small O(1/N) mass for some of the gravitons. The boundary gauge theory and the AdS/CFT correspondence are used as guiding principles to study and draw conclusions on some of the well known problems of massive gravity - classical instabilities and strong coupling effects. We find examples of stable multi-graviton theories where the usual strong coupling effects …
