A new numerical method for an inverse problem for an elliptic equation with unknown potential is proposed. In this problem the point source is running along a straight line and the source-dependent Dirichlet boundary condition is measured as the data for the inverse problem. A rigorous convergence analysis shows that this method converges globally, provided that the so-called tail function is approximated well. This approximation is verified in numerical experiments, so as the global convergence. Applications to medical imaging, imaging of targets on battlefields and to electrical impedance tomography are discussed.
The comparative study of two globally convergent numerical methods for acoustic tomography is carried out in two dimensions. These are the boundary control method and the quasi-reversibility method. The novelty is that in the latter a nonlinear inverse problem is reduced to a family of the linear integral equations of the first kind via the Lavrentiev approach and this reduction is used within the quasi-reversibility method. The analysis of its stability is carried out via Carleman estimates. The computational effectiveness of these methods is tested in the numerical experiments with the smoot…
The first numerical solution of the 3-D travel time tomography problem is presented. The globally convergent convexification numerical method is applied.
In this paper we propose a new class of iterative regularization methods for solving ill-posed linear operator equations. The prototype of these iterative regularization methods is in the form of second order evolution equation with a linear vanishing damping term, which can be viewed not only as an extension of the asymptotical regularization, but also as a continuous analog of the Nesterov's acceleration scheme. New iterative regularization methods are derived from this continuous model in combination with damped symplectic numerical schemes. The regularization property as well as convergenc…
While Computerized Tomography (CT) images can help detect disease such as Covid-19, regular CT machines are large and expensive. Cheaper and more portable machines suffer from errors in geometry acquisition that downgrades CT image quality. The errors in geometry can be represented with parameters in the mathematical model for image reconstruction. To obtain a good image, we formulate a nonlinear least squares problem that simultaneously reconstructs the image and corrects for errors in the geometry parameters. We develop an accelerated alternating minimization scheme to reconstruct the image …
Seismic tomography solves high-dimensional optimization problems to image subsurface structures of Earth. In this paper, we propose to use random batch methods to construct the gradient used for iterations in seismic tomography. Specifically, we use the frozen Gaussian approximation to compute seismic wave propagation, and then construct stochastic gradients by random batch methods. The method inherits the spirit of stochastic gradient descent methods for solving high-dimensional optimization problems. The proposed idea is general in the sense that it does not rely on the usage of the frozen G…
