Closed string tachyon emission from a traveling long string in Liouville string theory is studied. The exact collective field Hamiltonian in the adjoint sector of the c=1 matrix model is computed to capture the interaction between the tip of the long string and the closed string tachyon field. The amplitude for emission of a single tachyon quantum is obtained in a closed form using the chiral formalism.
We solve the non-local eigenvalue problem that arose from consideration of the adjoint sector of the c=1 matrix model in hep-th/0503112. We obtain the exact wavefunction and a scattering phase that matches the string theory calculation.
We consider a "one current" state, obtained by appication of a color current on the "adjoint" vacuum, in $QCD_2$, with quarks in fundamental representation. The quarks are taken to be massless. The theory on the light-front can be "currentized", namely formulated in terms of currents only. The adjoint vacuum is obtained by applying a current derivative, at zero momentum, on the singlet vacuum. In general the "one current" states are not eigenstates of $M^2=2P^+P^-$, except in the large $N_f$ limit. Problems with infra-red regularizations are pointed out. Connection to fermionic structure is ma…
The effect of topology on the thermodynamics of a gas of adjoint representation charges interacting via 1+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge fields is investigated. We demonstrate explicitly the existence of multiple vacua parameterized by the discrete superselection variable k=1,...,N. In the low pressure limit, the k dependence of the adjoint gas equation of state is calculated and shown to be non-trivial. Conversely, in the limit of high system pressure, screening by the adjoint charges results in an equation of state independent of k. Additionally, the relation of this model to adjoint QCD at finit…
$QCD_2$ with fermions in the adjoint representation is invariant under $SU(N)/Z_N$ and thereby is endowed with a non-trivial vacuum structure (k-sectors). The static potential between adjoint charges, in the limit of infinite mass, can be therefore obtained by computing Wilson loops in the pure Yang-Mills theory with the same non-trivial structure. When the (Euclidean) space-time is compactified on a sphere $S^2$, Wilson loops can be exactly expressed in terms of an infinite series of topological excitations (instantons). The presence of k-sectors modifies the energy spectrum of the theory and…
The effects of a Lorentz symmetry violating background vector on the Aharonov-Casher bound and scattering scenarios is considered. Using an approach based on the self-adjoint extension method, an expression for the bound state energies is obtained in terms of the physics of the problem by determining the self-adjoint extension parameter. We found that there is an additional scattering for any value of the self-adjoint extension parameter and bound states for negative values of this parameter. By comparing the bound state and scattering results the self-adjoint extension parameter is determined…
We consider $1+1$ dimensional Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $G$ coupled to a massive Majorana fermion field in an adjoint representation and a number of massless Dirac or Majorana fermions transforming in arbitrary representations of the gauge group $G$. It is shown that the spectrum of the massive sector of this theory becomes supersymmetric at particular mass of adjoint fermion. This mass is independent of the detailed structure of the massless sector of the model and depends only on the gauge group $G$ and integer $k$ measuring the total anomaly. The massless sector of the model is sho…
On a nonrelativistic contact four-fermion model we have shown that the simple Lambda-cut-off prescription together with definite fine-tuning of the Lambda dependency of "bare"quantities lead to self-adjoint semi-bounded Hamiltonian in one-, two- and three-particle sectors. The fixed self-adjoint extension and exact solutions in two-particle sector completely define three-particle problem. The renormalized Faddeev equations for the bound states with Fredholm properties are obtained and analyzed.
Generalised bi-adjoint scalar amplitudes, obtained from integrations over moduli space of punctured $\mathbb{CP}^{k-1}$, are novel extensions of the CHY formalism. These amplitudes have realisations in terms of Grassmannian cluster algebras. Recently connections between one-loop integrands for bi-adjoint cubic scalar theory and $\mathcal{D}_n$ cluster polytope have been established. In this paper using the $\text{Gr}\left(3,6\right)$ cluster algebra, we relate the singularities of $\left(3,6\right)$ amplitude to four-point one-loop integrand in the bi-adjoint cubic scalar theory through the $\…
We discuss Dirac equation (DE) and its solution in presence of solenoid (infinitely long) field in (3+1) dimensions. Starting with a very restricted domain for the Hamiltonian, we show that a 1-parameter family of self adjoint extensions (SAE) are necessary to make sure the correct evolution of the Dirac spinors. Within the extended domain bound state (BS) and scattering state (SS) solutions are obtained. We argue that the existence of bound state in such system is basically due the breaking of classical scaling symmetry by the quantization procedure. A remarkable effect of the scaling anomaly…
The adjoint 2-dimensional $QCD$ with the gauge group $SU(N)/Z_N$ admits topologically nontrivial gauge field configurations associated with nontrivial $π_1[SU(N)/Z_N] = Z_N$. The topological sectors are labelled by an integer $k=0,\ldots, N-1$. However, in contrast to $QED_2$ and $QCD_4$, this topology is not associated with an integral invariant like the magnetic flux or Pontryagin index. These instantons may admit fermion zero modes, but there is always an equal number of left-handed and right-handed modes, so that the Atiyah-Singer theorem, which determines in other cases the number of the …
In recent work, we demonstrated that the confined-phase spectrum of non-supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theory coincides with the spectrum of the chiral sector of a two-dimensional conformal field theory in the large-$N$ limit. This was done within the tractable setting in which the gauge theory is compactified on a three-sphere whose radius is small compared to the strong length scale. In this paper, we generalize these observations by demonstrating that similar results continue to hold even when massless adjoint matter fields are introduced. These results hold for both thermal and $(-1)^F$-tw…
In a nonrelativistic contact four-fermion model we show that simple regularisation prescriptions together with a definite fine-tuning of the cut-off-parameter dependence of ``bare'' quantities give the exact solutions for the two-particle sector and Goldstone modes. Their correspondence with the self-adjoint extension into Pontryagin space is established leading to self-adjoint semi-bounded Hamiltonians in three-particle sectors as well. Renormalized Faddeev equations for the bound states with Fredholm properties are obtained and analysed.
In the high energy Regge limit, the six gluons scattering amplitude is controlled by the adjoint BFKL eigenvalue and impact factor. In this paper we determine these two building blocks at any value of the 't Hooft coupling in planar $\cal{N}$=4 SYM theory. This is achieved by means of analytic continuations from the collinear limit, where similar all loops expressions were recently established. We check our predictions against all available data at weak and strong coupling.
The spin-4/3 fractional superstring is characterized by a world-sheet chiral algebra involving spin-4/3 currents. The discussion of the tree-level scattering amplitudes of this theory presented in hepth/9310131 is expanded to include amplitudes containing two twisted-sector states. These amplitudes are shown to satisfy spurious state decoupling. The restriction to only two external twisted-sector states is due to the absence of an appropriate dimension-one vertex describing the emission of a single twisted-sector state. This is analogous to the ``old covariant'' formalism of ordinary superstri…
We consider SU(N) gauge theory in 1+1 dimensions coupled to chiral fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. With all fields in the adjoint representation the gauge group is actually SU(N)/Z_N, which possesses nontrivial topology. In particular, there are N distinct topological sectors and the physical vacuum state has a structure analogous to a θvacuum. We show how this feature is realized in light-front quantization for the case N=2, using discretization as an infrared regulator. In the discretized form of the theory the nontrivial vacuum structure is associated with the zer…
We consider SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions coupled to massless adjoint fermions. With all fields in the adjoint representation the gauge group is actually SU(2)/Z_2, which possesses nontrivial topology. In particular, there are two distinct topological sectors and the physical vacuum state has a structure analogous to a θvacuum. We show how this feature is realized in light-front quantization, with periodicity conditions used to regulate the infrared and treating the gauge field zero mode as a dynamical quantity. We find expressions for the degenerate vacuum states and construct the…
We study the scattering of long strings in c = 1 string theory, both in the worldsheet description and in the non-singlet sector of the dual matrix quantum mechanics. From the worldsheet perspective, the scattering amplitudes of long strings are obtained from a decoupling limit of open strings amplitudes on FZZT branes, which we compute by integrating Virasoro conformal blocks along with structure constants of boundary Liouville theory. In particular, we study the tree level amplitudes of (1) a long string decaying by emitting a closed string, and (2) the scattering of a pair of long strings. …
In the paper the one-dimensional one-center scattering problem with the initial potential $α|x|^{-1}$ on the whole axis is treated and reduced to the search for allowable self-adjoint extensions. Using the laws of conservation as necessary conditions in the singular point alongside with account of the analytical structure of fundamental solutions, it allows us to receive exact expressions for the wave functions (i.e. for the boundary conditions), scattering coefficients and the singular corrections to the potential, as well as the corresponding bound state spectrum. It turns out that the point…
We consider states in the adjoint representation of the Standard Model gauge group as messengers for mediation of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. These new messengers can shift the gauge coupling unification to the string scale at O(5x10^{17} GeV) if their masses are at O(10^{14} GeV). The predicted SUSY mass spectrum at the electroweak scale is significantly different from those in other gauge-mediated or supergravity models, resulting in robust mass relations. The gravitino mass is predicted to be about 1-10 GeV. The heavy messenger sector could provide a superheavy dark matter candidate.
We examine the effective low-energy theory of the adjoint sector of Dirac gaugino models and its UV completions, and identify the main source of tuning. A holomorphic scalar adjoint mass square (the "$b_M$ term") is generated at the same order (1-loop) as the Dirac gaugino mass (the "$m_D$ term"), leading to the problematic relation $b_M\sim16π^2 m_D^2$, somewhat analogous to the $μ-B_μ$ problem of gauge mediation. We identify the leading operators of the low-energy effective theory contributing to the adjoint sector, and evaluate them in various UV completions, confirming the existence of thi…
The effects of a Lorentz symmetry violating background vector on the Aharonov-Casher scattering in the nonrelativistic limit is considered. By using the self-adjoint extension method we found that there is an additional scattering for any value of the self-adjoint extension parameter and non-zero energy bound states for negative values of this parameter. Expressions for the energy bound states, phase-shift and the scattering matrix are explicitly determined in terms of the self-adjoint extension parameter. The expression obtained for the scattering amplitude reveals that the helicity is not co…
In this work we consider a model where the potential has two topological sectors connecting three adjacent minima, as occurs with the $ϕ^6$ model. In each topological sector, the potential is symmetric around the local maximum. For $ϕ>0$ there is a linear map between the model and the $λϕ^4$ model. For $ϕ<0$ the potential is reflected. Linear stability analysis of kink and antikink lead to discrete and continuum modes related by a linear coordinate transformation to those known analytically for the $λϕ^4$ model. Fixing one topological sector, the structure of antikink-kink scattering is relate…
I introduce a class of string constructions based on asymmetric orbifolds leading to level two models. In particular, I derive in detail various models with gauge groups $E_6$ and SO(10), including a four generation $E_6$ model with two adjoint representations. The occurrence of multiple adjoint representations is a generic feature of the construction. In the course of describing this approach, I will address the problem of twist phases in higher twisted sectors of asymmetric orbifolds.
Requiring that supersymmetric SU(5) and SU(6) grand unifications in the heterotic string theory must have 3 chiral families, adjoint (or higher representation) Higgs fields in the grand unifiedgauge group, and a non-abelian hidden sector, we construct such string models within the framework of conformal field theory and asymmetric orbifolds. Within this framework, we construct all such string models via Z_6 asymmetric orbifolds that include a Z_3 outer-automorphism, the latter yielding a level-3 current algebra for the grand unification gauge group SU(5) or SU(6). We then classify all such Z_6…
We study CPT-odd non-minimal Lorentz-symmetry violating couplings in the electroweak sector modifying the interactions between leptons, gauge mediators and the Higgs boson. The tree-level (differential) cross sections for three important electroweak processes are discussed: $e^+ \, e^- \rightarrow Z \, H$, $e^+ \, e^- \rightarrow Z \, Z$ and $γ\, γ\rightarrow W^+ \, W^-$. By considering next-generation $e^+ \, e^-$ colliders reaching center-of-mass energies at the TeV scale and the estimated improved precision for the measurements of the respective cross sections, we are able to project upper …
We study the possibility of obtaining metastable supersymmetry breaking vacua in a perturbative gauge theory without singlet fields, thus allowing for scenarios where a grand unified symmetry and supersymmetry are broken by the same sector. We show some explicit SU(5) examples. The minimal renormalizable example requires the use of two adjoints, but it is shown to inevitably lead to unwanted light states. We suggest various alternatives, and show that the viable possibilities consist of allowing for non-renormalizable operators, of employing four adjoints or of adding at least one field in a d…
In this work the bound state and scattering problems for a spin-1/2 particle undergone to an Aharonov-Bohm potential in a conical space in the nonrelativistic limit are considered. The presence of a δ-function singularity, which comes from the Zeeman spin interaction with the magnetic flux tube, is addressed by the self-adjoint extension method. One of the advantages of the present approach is the determination of the self-adjoint extension parameter in terms of physics of the problem. Expressions for the energy bound states, phase-shift and $S$ matrix are determined in terms of the self-adjoi…
The quantum-mechanical problems of electron scattering by an infinitely thin solenoid and by a half of an infinitely thin solenoid are examined from the viewpoint of constructing a self-adjoint Hamiltonian. It is demonstrated that in both problems there exist unique self-adjoint operators with a ``non-singular'' domain, that, due to physical reasons, are identified with the corresponding Hamiltonians. In the case of quantized values of magnetic flow along the solenoid, the electron does not experience any scattering by the string. It is shown that the scattering amplitude and wave function of …
We examine the bound state and scattering problem of a spin-one-half particle undergone to an Aharonov-Bohm potential in a conical space in the nonrelativistic limit. The crucial problem of the δ-function singularity coming from the Zeeman spin interaction with the magnetic flux tube is solved through the self-adjoint extension method. Using two different approaches already known in the literature, both based on the self-adjoint extension method, we obtain the self-adjoint extension parameter to the bound state and scattering scenarios in terms of the physics of the problem. It is shown that s…

The recently developed worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) formalism for the classical gravitational scattering of massive bodies is extended to massive, charged point particles coupling to bi-adjoint scalar field theory, Yang-Mills theory, and dilaton-gravity. We establish a classical double copy relation in these WQFTs for classical observables (deflection, radiation). The bi-adjoint scalar field theory fixes the locality structure of the double copy from Yang-Mills to dilaton-gravity. Using this the eikonal scattering phase (or free energy of the WQFT) is computed to next-to-leading order…
Both the nonrelativistic scattering and the spectrum in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm potential are analyzed. The single-particle density of states (DOS) for different self-adjoint extensions is calculated. The DOS provides a link between different physical quantities and is a natural starting point for their calculation. The consequences of an asymmetry of the S matrix for the generic self-adjoint extension are examined. I. Introduction II. Impenetrable flux tube and the density of states III. We discover new hard string scattering amplitudes (HSSA) with polarizations orthogonal to the scattering plane in the NS sector of 10D open superstring theory. The corresponding HSSA in the bosonic string theory are of subleading order in energy. In addition, all HSSA are found to be proportional to each other and the ratios among these HSSA are calculated to justify Gross conjecture in 1988 on high energy symmetry of string theory. Moreover, together with these new HSSA, the total number of HSSA calculated in the first massive level of NS sector are found to agree with those of hard polarized…

In this paper the relativistic quantum dynamics of a spin-1/2 neutral particle with a magnetic moment $μ$ in the cosmic string spacetime is reexamined by applying the von Neumann theory of self--adjoint extensions. Contrary to previous studies where the interaction between the spin and the line of charge is neglected, here we consider its effects. This interaction gives rise to a point interaction: $\boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot \mathbf{E}= (2λ/α)δ(r)/r$. Due to the presence of the Dirac delta function, by applying an appropriated boundary condition provided by the theory of self--adjoint extensio…
