We report the synthesis and measurement of an ultra-precise and extremely stable optical frequency in the telecommunications window around 1543 nm. Using a fibre-based femtosecond frequency comb we have phase-stabilised a fibre laser at 194 THz to an optical frequency standard at 344 THz, thus transferring the properties of the optical frequency standard to another spectral region. Relative to the optical frequency standard, the synthesised frequency at 194 THz is determined to within 1 mHz and its fractional frequency instability is measured to be less than 2*10^{-15} at 1 s, reaching 5*10^{-18} after 8000 s. We also measured the synthesised frequency against a caesium fountain clock: here the frequency comparison itself contributes less than 4 mHz (2*10^{-17}) to the uncertainty. Our results confirm the suitability of fibre based frequency comb technology for precision measurements and frequency synthesis, and enable long-distance comparison of optical clocks by using optical fibres to transmit the frequency information.
We demonstrate a fibre-based approach that generates mid-infrared femtosecond pulses in the 3-4 μm spectral region with microjoule-level single pulse energy. This is realised in a piece of gas-filled antiresonant hollow-core fibre that is pumped by a two-micron light source. A rapid variation of the dispersion near a structural resonance of the fibre creates a phase-matching point in the mid-infrared, which mediates the frequency-down conversion. We generate femtosecond pulses centred at 3.16 μm wavelength with the pulse energy of more than 1 μJ, achieving the conversion efficiency as high as …
In this paper, we demonstrate a pulse energy-governed nonlinear self-switching of femtosecond pulses at wavelength of 1700 nm in a highly nonlinear high index contrast dual-core fibre. The fibre structure is composed of two microdimension cores and a solid cladding made of two thermally matched soft glasses developed in-house. A double switching behaviour under monotonic increase of the input pulse energy from 1 nJ to 3 nJ was observed at 35 mm fibre length in its anomalous dispersion region. A spatial intensity distribution measurement identified a switching contrast of 16.7 dB, and the regis…
The ultrashort pulse laser operation is crucially defined by engaging explicit modulators. Conventionally, they are laborious to incorporate into an all-fibre design or involve the design of sophisticated cavities. We exploit Thulium-doped fibre as the gain and simple, highly integrated saturable absorber with a modulation depth of 23% and a high thermal damage threshold. Hence, pulses as short as 350fs carrying 1nJ energy at a repetition rate of 45MHz have been demonstrated. The laser average output power showed long-term stability with ~1%. The utilised concept of all-fibre saturable absorbe…
Physical mechanisms of electron emission from fibre optic nanotips, namely, tunnelling, multi-photon, and thermionic emission, either prevent fast switching or require intense laser fields. Time-resolved electron emission from nano-sized sources finds applications ranging from material characterisation to fundamental studies of quantum coherence. We present a nano-sized electron source capable of fast-switching (<1 ns) that can be driven with low-power femtosecond lasers. The physical mechanism that can explain emission at low laser power is surface plasmon enhanced above-threshold photoemissi…
Optical frequency combs are laser sources which are capable of generating discrete, equal-spaced and highly coherent comb modes. Optical frequency comb technique provides a significant bridge to transfer the stability between optical frequency and radio frequency. The advances of this technology greatly promote the development of precision spectroscopy, optical time/frequency transfer, optical frequency division, long-distance transfer of time/frequency references and high-precision distance measurement. Benefiting from the wide spectral outputs, femtosecond lasers have become the best choice …
Femtosecond frequency combs have boosted progress in various fields of precision metrology. Nevertheless, demanding applications such as front-end frequency and time standards, ultrastable microwave generation or high-resolution spectroscopy still necessitate improved stability. The spectral bandwidth and absolute position of individual comb lines are crucial in this context. Typically, both parameters are controlled on short and long time scales by tight locking to external optical and microwave references which represent costly and cumbersome additions to the entire setup. Here, we demonstra…
Formation of femtosecond sawtooth pulses by high harmonic generation from relativistic oscillating mirrors is studied. For oblique incidence of $p$-polarized laser pulse, one can efficiently control the intensity of the first few harmonics by modifying the plasma density gradient at the plasma-vacuum interface. With appropriate choice of the laser amplitude and incidence angle, the generated harmonics can form a millijoule femtosecond sawtooth pulse. The scheme does not rely on phase manipulation and/or pulse synchronization as in the state-of-art methods. It is also shown that such a sawtooth…
We demonstrate a new practical approach for generating multicolour spiral-shaped beams. It makes use of a standard silica optical fibre, combined with a titled input laser beam. The resulting breaking of the fibre axial symmetry leads to the propagation of a helical beam. The associated output far-field has spiral shape, independently of the input laser power value. Whereas, with a high-power near-infrared femtosecond laser, a visible supercontinuum spiral emission is generated. With appropriate control of the input laser coupling conditions, the colours of the spiral spatially self-organize i…
We report a mode-locked Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser with 5GHz repetition rate. Spectral broadening of the 24 fs pulses in a microstructured fiber yields an octave-spanning spectrum and permits self-referencing and active stabilization of the emitted femtosecond laser frequency comb (FLFC). The individual modes of the 5GHz FLFC are resolved with a high-resolution spectrometer based on a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) spectral disperser. Isolation of single comb elements at a microwatt average power level is demonstrated. The combination of the high-power, frequency-stabilized 5GHz laser…
Real-time spectroscopic monitoring of continuous synthesis of zinc oxide nanostructures in femtosecond laser fabricated 3D microfluidic microchannels with integrated on-chip fiber probe array
In this letter we report on an all optical-fibre approach to the synthesis of ultra-low noise microwave signals by photodetection of femtosecond laser pulses. We use a cascade of Mach-Zehnder fibre interferometers to realize stable and efficient repetition rate multiplication. This technique increases the signal level of the photodetected microwave signal by close to 18 dB, that in turn, allows us to demonstrate a phase noise level of 118 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz and -160 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz from 12 GHz signal. The noise floor of the fiber multiplier and photodetection system alone is around -164 dBc/Hz at…
Optical soliton dynamics can cause the extreme alteration of the temporal and spectral shape of a propagating light pulse. They occur at up to kilowatt peak powers in glass-core optical fibres and the gigawatt level in gas-filled microstructured hollow-core fibres. Here we demonstrate optical soliton dynamics in large-core hollow capillary fibres. This enables scaling of soliton effects by several orders of magnitude to the multi-mJ energy and terawatt peak power level. We experimentally demonstrate two key soliton effects. First, we observe self-compression to sub-cycle pulses and infer the c…
Optical frequency division of an ultrastable laser to the microwave frequency range by an optical frequency comb has allowed the generation of microwave signals with unprecedently high spectral purity and stability. However, the generated microwave signal will suffer from a very low power level if no external optical frequency comb repetition rate multiplication device is used. This paper reports theoretical and experimental studies on the beneficial use of the Vernier effect together with the spectral selective filtering in a double directional coupler add-drop optical fibre ring resonator to…
A systematic numerical study of ultrafast nonlinear directional coupler performance based on soliton self-trapping in a novel type of dual-core optical fibre is presented. The considered highly nonlinear fibre structure is composed of a real, intentionally developed soft glass-pair with high refractive index contrast at the level of 0.4 in the near infrared. Nonlinear propagation of picojoule level femtosecond pulses was studied numerically with the aim to identify the best switching performance in input parameter space of 1400 - 1800 nm in terms of excitation wavelengths, and of 75 - 150 fs i…
This study proposes and demonstrates a versatile method for near and mid-infrared optical frequency comb generation using multi-seeded femtosecond optical parametric generation. The method allows one to divide the repetition rate by an arbitrarily large integer factor, freely tune the offset frequency, and adjust the common phase offset of the comb modes. Since all possible degrees of freedom are adjustable, the proposed method manifests itself as versatile optical frequency synthesis.
Laser pulses with a duration of one femtosecond or shorter can be generated both in the IR-VIS and in the extreme UV, but the deep UV is a spectral region where such extremely short pulses have not yet been demonstrated. Here, a method for the synthesis of ultrashort pulses in the deep UV is demonstrated, which utilizes the temporal and spatial harmonics that are generated by two noncollinear IR-VIS pulses in a thin MgF2 plate. By controlling the groove-envelope phase of the IR-VIS pulses, spatial harmonics are concatenated to form deep UV waveforms with a duration of 1.5 fs.
Dual THz comb spectroscopy has the potential to be used as universal THz spectroscopy with high spectral resolution, high spectral accuracy, and broad spectral coverage; however, the requirement for dual stabilized femtosecond lasers hampers its versatility due to the bulky size, high complexity, and high cost. We here report the first demonstration of dual THz comb spectroscopy using a single free-running fibre laser. By tuning the cavity-loss-dependent gain profile with an intracavity Lyot filter together with precise management of the cavity length and dispersion, dual-wavelength pulsed lig…
Ultrahigh-resolution optical strain sensors provide powerful tools in various scientific and engineering fields, ranging from long-baseline interferometers to civil and aerospace industries. Here we demonstrate an ultrahigh-resolution fibre strain sensing method by directly detecting the time-of-flight (TOF) change of the optical pulse train generated from a free-running passively mode-locked laser (MLL) frequency comb. We achieved a local strain resolution of 18 pε/Hz1/2 and 1.9 pε/Hz1/2 at 1 Hz and 3 kHz, respectively, with largedynamic range of >154 dB at 3 kHz. For remote-point sensing at …

We demonstrate for the first time to our knowledge the generation of overcritical plasma densities inside transparent solids over long distances using femtosecond laser pulses. This opens new avenues for high energy density physics in confined geometry such as warm dense matter study or the synthesis of new material phases. We show both with experiments and first-principles simulations, that femtosecond conical interference via a Bessel beam creates a dense plasma rod with typically 100 nm diameter in sapphire. The interaction is in ideal conditions to trigger collisionless resonance absorptio…
We have developed a method for producing spatially stable micron-scale liquid targets of flexible shapes at kilohertz repetition rate for use in air and vacuum, by perturbing 5 and 30 μm diameter streams with femtosecond laser pulses and monitoring the temporal development of the perturbation. Using water, we have produced features such as 2.1 μm diameter droplet and 1.3 μm diameter neck with less than 0.3 μm shot-to-shot variation, with prospects for further reduction in size and variability. The use of such micron-scale targets can be expected to prevent conductive heat dissipation, enhance …
Photonics integrated circuitry would benefit considerably from the ability to arbitrarily control waveguide cross-sections with high precision and low loss, in order to provide more degrees of freedom in manipulating propagating light. Here, we report a new method for femtosecond laser writing of optical-fibre-compatible glass waveguides, namely spherical phase induced multi-core waveguide (SPIM-WG), which addresses this challenging task with three dimensional on-chip light control. Fabricating in the heating regime with high scanning speed, precise deformation of cross-sections is still achie…
We stabilise a microwave oscillator at 9.6 GHz to an optical clock laser at 344 THz by using a fibre-based femtosecond laser frequency comb as a transfer oscillator. With a second frequency comb we measure independently the instability of the microwave source with respect to another optical clock laser frequency at 456 THz. The total fractional frequency instability of this optic-to-microwave and microwave-to-optic conversion resulted in an Allan deviation sigma_y, of sigma_y=1.2E-14 at 1 s averaging time (band width 50 kHz). The residual phase noise density is -97 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz offset from …
Micro-combs [1 - 4], optical frequency combs generated by integrated micro-cavity resonators, offer the full potential of their bulk counterparts [5,6], but in an integrated footprint. One of their most promising applications has been optical fibre communications where they hav…
Bridging the "terahertz (THz) gap" relies upon synthesizing arbitrary waveforms in the THz domain enabling applications that require both narrow band sources for sensing and few-cycle drives for classical and quantum objects. However, realization of custom-tailored waveforms needed for these applications is currently hindered due to limited flexibility for optical rectification of femtosecond pulses in bulk crystals. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) circuits provide a versatile solution for such waveform synthesis through combining the merits of complex…

Nonlinear acoustic interactions in liquids are effectively stronger than nonlinear optical interactions in solids. Thus, harnessing these interactions will offer new possibilities in the design of ultra-compact nonlinear photonic devices. We theoretically demonstrate a hybrid, liquid-state and nanoplasmonic, source of optical frequency combs compatible with fibre-optic technology. This source relies on a nanoantenna to harness the strength of nonlinear acoustic effects and synthesise optical spectra from ultrasound.
We developed a novel technique for frequency measurement and synthesis, based on the operation of a femtosecond comb generator as transfer oscillator. The technique can be used to measure frequency ratios of any optical signals throughout the visible and near-infrared part of the spectrum. Relative uncertainties of $10^{-18}$ for averaging times of 100 s are possible. Using a Nd:YAG laser in combination with a nonlinear crystal we measured the frequency ratio of the second harmonic $ν_{SH}$ at 532 nm to the fundamental $ν_0$ at 1064 nm, $ν_{SH}/ν_0 = 2.000 000 000 000 000 001 \times (1 \pm 7 \…
Temporal imaging systems are outstanding tools for single-shot observation of optical signals that have irregular and ultrafast dynamics. They allow long time windows to be recorded with femtosecond resolution, and do not rely on complex algorithms. However, simultaneous recording of amplitude and phase remains an open challenge for these systems. Here we present a new heterodyne time-lens arrangement that efficiently records both the amplitude and phase of complex signals, while keeping the performances of classical time-lens systems ($\sim 200$~fs) and field of view (tens of ps). Phase and t…
Phase coherently linking optical to radio frequencies with femtosecond mode-locked laser frequency combs enabled counting the cycles of light and is the basis of optical clocks, absolute frequency synthesis, tests of fundamental physics, and improved spectroscopy. Using an optical microresonator frequency comb to establish a coherent link between optical and microwave frequencies will extend optical frequency synthesis and measurements to areas requiring compact form factor, on chip integration and comb line spacing in the microwave regime, including coherent telecommunications, astrophysical …
Mode-locked lasers have been widely used to explore interactions between optical solitons, including bound-soliton states that may be regarded as "photonic molecules". Conventional mode-locked lasers can however host at most only a few solitons, which means that stochastic behaviour involving large numbers of solitons cannot easily be studied under controlled experimental conditions. Here we report the use of an optoacoustically mode-locked fibre laser to create hundreds of temporal traps or "reactors" within which multiple solitons can be isolated and controlled both globally and individually…
