This paper characterizes geometrically the singularities of limited DOF parallel manipulators. The geometric conditions associated with the dependency of six Plücker vector of lines (finite and infinite) constituting the rows of the inverse Jacobian matrix are formulated using Grassmann-Cayley algebra. Manipulators under consideration do not need to have a passive spherical joint somewhere in each leg. This study is illustrated with three example robots
The present project deals with the elastostatic modeling and calibration experiment of spacial industrial manipulators using an optimal selection of measurements pose, for the calibration procedure, the optimal pose selection aims to the efficiency improvement of identification procedure for serial manipulators which reduces noise impact on the parameters identification precision, it is usually used for planar manipulators, our work is mainly to extend the approach for a more complicated manipulator in 3D space using a wise decomposition of the spacial manipulator into a set of serial sub-chai…
This paper introduces a methodology to analyze geometrically the singularities of manipulators, of which legs apply both actuation forces and constraint moments to their moving platform. Lower-mobility parallel manipulators and parallel manipulators, of which some legs do not have any spherical joint, are such manipulators. The geometric conditions associated with the dependency of six Plücker vectors of finite lines or lines at infinity constituting the rows of the inverse Jacobian matrix are formulated using Grassmann-Cayley Algebra. Accordingly, the singularity conditions are obtained in ve…
Mainly because of the heavy computational costs, the real-time whole-body obstacle avoidance for the redundant manipulators has not been well implemented. This paper presents an approach that can ensure that the whole-body of a redundant manipulator can avoid moving obstacles in real-time during the execution of a task. The manipulator is divided into end-effector and non-end-effector portion. Based on dynamical systems (DS), the real-time end-effector obstacle avoidance is obtained. Besides, the end-effector can reach the given target. By using null-space velocity control, the real-time non-e…

The subject of this paper is a special class of parallel manipulators. First, we analyze a family of three-degree-of-freedom manipulators. Two Jacobian matrices appear in the kinematic relations between the joint-rate and the Cartesian-velocity vectors, which are called the "inverse kinematics" and the "direct kinematics" matrices. The singular configurations of these matrices are studied. The isotropic configurations are then studied based on the characteristic length of this manipulator. The isoconditioning loci of all Jacobian matrices are computed to define a global performance index to co…

The subject of this paper is a special class of three-degree-of-freedom parallel manipulators. The singular configurations of the two Jacobian matrices are first studied. The isotropic configurations are then found based on the characteristic length of this manipulator. The isoconditioning loci for the Jacobian matrices are plotted to define a global performance index allowing the comparison of the different working modes. The index thus resulting is compared with the Cartesian workspace surface and the average of the condition number.
Dimensional synthesis refers to design of the dimensions of manipulators by optimising different kinds of performance indices. The motivation of this study is to perform dimensional synthesis for a wide set of spatial manipulators by optimising the manipulability of each manipulator around a pre-defined task point in the workspace and to finally give a prescription of manipulators along with their dimensions optimised for velocity and force transmission. A systematic method to formulate Jacobian matrix of a manipulator is presented. Optimisation of manipulability is performed for manipulation …

This paper focuses on the kinematic properties of a new three-degree-of-freedom hybrid manipulator. This manipulator is obtained by adding in series to a five-bar planar mechanism (similar to the one studied by Bajpai and Roth) a third revolute passing through the line of centers of the two actuated revolute joints of the above linkage. The resulting architecture is hybrid in that it has both serial and parallel links. Fully-parallel manipulators are known for the existence of particularly undesirable singularities (referred to as parallel singularities) where control is lost [4] and [6]. On t…

The subject of this paper is a special class of closed-chain manipulators. First, we analyze a family of two-degree-of-freedom (dof) five-bar planar linkages. Two Jacobian matrices appear in the kinematic relations between the joint-rate and the Cartesian-velocity vectors, which are called the ``inverse kinematics" and the "direct kinematics" matrices. It is shown that the loci of points of the workspace where the condition number of the direct-kinematics matrix remains constant, i.e., the isoconditioning loci, are the coupler points of the four-bar linkage obtained upon locking the middle joi…

To realize a robust robotic grasping system for unknown objects in an unstructured environment, large amounts of grasp data and 3D model data for the object are required, the sizes of which directly affect the rate of successful grasps. To reduce the time cost of data acquisition and labeling and increase the rate of successful grasps, we developed a self-supervised learning mechanism to control grasp tasks performed by manipulators. First, a manipulator automatically collects the point cloud for the objects from multiple perspectives to increase the efficiency of data acquisition. The complet…

The aim of this paper is to compute of the generalized aspects, i.e. the maximal singularity-free domains in the Cartesian product of the joint space and workspace, for a planar parallel mechanism in using quadtree model and interval analysis based method. The parallel mechanisms can admit several solutions to the inverses and the direct kinematic models. These singular configurations divide the joint space and the workspace in several not connected domains. To compute this domains, the quadtree model can be made by using a discretization of the space. Unfortunately, with this method, some sin…

Most traditional robotic mechanisms feature inelastic joints that are unable to robustly handle large deformations and off-axis moments. As a result, the applied loads are transferred rigidly throughout the entire structure. The disadvantage of this approach is that the exerted leverage is magnified at each subsequent joint possibly damaging the mechanism. In this paper, we present two lightweight, elastic, bio-inspired tensegrity robotics arms which mitigate this danger while improving their mechanism's functionality. Our solutions feature modular tensegrity structures that function similarly…
Motion control of mobile manipulators (a robotic arm mounted on a mobile base) can be challenging for complex tasks such as material and package handling. In this paper, a task-space stabilization controller based on Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) is designed and implemented to a 10 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) mobile manipulator which consists of a 7-DOF robotic arm and a 3-DOF mobile base. The system model is based on kinematic models where the end-effector orientation is parameterized directly by a rotation matrix. The state and control constraints as well as singularity constraints …
Robots are moving towards applications in less structured environments, but their model-based controllers are challenged by the tasks' complexity and intrinsic environmental unpredictability. Studying biological motor control can provide insights into overcoming these limitations due to the high dexterity and stability observable in humans and animals. This work presents a geometrical solution to the postural optimisation of 7-DoF limbs-like mechanisms, which are robust to singularities and computationally efficient. The theoretical formulation identified two separate decoupled optimisation st…
In the modern days, manipulators are found in the automated assembly lines of industries that produce products in masses. These manipulators can be used only in one configuration, that is either serial or parallel. In this paper, a new module which has two degrees of freedom is introduced. By connecting the two and three modules in series, 4 and 6 DoF hybrid manipulators can be formed respectively. By erecting 3 modules in parallel and with some minor modifications, a 6 DoF parallel manipulator can be formed. Hence the manipulator is reconfigurable and can be used as hybrid or parallel manipul…

Therefore, designing controllers to suit the intensive purpose of the application is one of the major challenges for control researchers. This paper presents comparative analysis of three controllers on a 3-DOF robot manipulator. The proportional integral derivative (PID), proportional derivative (PD) and fuzzy logic (FL) controllers were designed and applied to each of the link of the robot by simulation. The performance of each control method was assesse…

The precise motion control of a multi-degree of freedom~(DOF) robot manipulator is always challenging due to its nonlinear dynamics, disturbances, and uncertainties. Because most manipulators are controlled by digital signals, a novel higher-order sliding mode controller in the discrete-time form with time delay estimation is proposed in this paper. The dynamic model of the manipulator used in the design allows proper handling of nonlinearities, uncertainties and disturbances involved in the problem. Specifically, parametric uncertainties and disturbances are handled by the time delay estimati…

This paper discusses modelling two 6 DOF arm robots. The first step of modelling a robot is establishing its Denavit-Hartenberg parameters. It requires assigning proper coordinates for each link and finding their exact dimensions. In this project we will develop the direct kinematics and workspace representations for two manipulators: the Smokie Robot and the Barrett WAM. After finding the D-H parameters and creating Transformation Matrices,MATLAB programming is used to represent their workspaces.

This machine consists of three fixed linear joints, which are mounted orthogonally, three identical legs and a mobile platform, which moves in the Cartesian x-y-z space with fixed orientation. New solutions to solve inverse/direct kinematics are proposed and we perform a detailed workspace and singularity analysis, taking into account specific joint limit constraints.

This paper presents a sensitivity analysis of the Orthoglide, a 3-DOF translational Parallel Kinematic Machine. Two complementary methods are developed to analyze its sensitivity to its dimensional and angular variations. First, a linkage kinematic analysis method is used to have a rough idea of the influence of the dimensional variations on the location of the end-effector. Besides, this method shows that variations in the design parameters of the same type from one leg to the other have the same influence on the end-effector. However, this method does not take into account the variations in …

The paper presents a new stiffness modeling method for overconstrained parallel manipulators with flexible links and compliant actuating joints. It is based on a multidimensional lumped-parameter model that replaces the link flexibility by localized 6-dof virtual springs that describe both translational/rotational compliance and the coupling between them. In contrast to other works, the method involves a FEA-based link stiffness evaluation and employs a new solution strategy of the kinetostatic equations for the unloaded manipulator configuration, which allows computing the stiffness matrix fo…

Additionally, multiple criteria are defined to evaluate the performance of LO models. Furthermore, aiming at high dimensional inputs, a database generation method based on input space dimension-reducing…

This paper evaluates how laminated techniques may be used to replicate the performance of more traditionally manufactured robotic manipulators. In this case study, we introduce a laminated 2-DOF spherical, parallel manipulator. Taking advantage of laminating techniques in the construction of the robot can result in considerable saving in construction costs and time, but, the challenges caused by this technique have to be addressed. By using stiffer materials in rigid links, the rigidity of the robot is increased to an acceptable level. We discuss one method for compensating position uncertaint…

In this paper, we incorporate velocity observer design into the virtual decomposition control (VDC) strategy of an $n$-DoF open chain robotic manipulator. Descending from the VDC strategy, the proposed design is based on decomposing the $n$-DoF manipulator into subsystems, i.e., rigid links and joints, for which the decentralized controller-observer implementation can be done locally. Similar to VDC, the combined controller-observer design is passivity-based, and we show that it achieves semiglobal exponential convergence of the tracking error. The convergence analysis is carried out using Lya…
This paper presents a method to control a manipulator system grasping a rigid-body payload so that the motion of the combined system in consequence of externally applied forces to be the same as another free-floating rigid-body (with different inertial properties). This allows zero-g emulation of a scaled spacecraft prototype under the test in a 1-g laboratory environment. The controller consisting of motion feedback and force/moment feedback adjusts the motion of the test spacecraft so as to match that of the flight spacecraft, even if the latter has flexible appendages (such as solar panels)…
