(abridged) We present new Spitzer, UKIRT and MMT observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) Mrk 996, with an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)=8.0. This galaxy has the peculiarity of possessing an extraordinarily dense nuclear star-forming region, with a central density of ~10^6 cm^{-3}. The nuclear region of Mrk 996 is characterized by several unusual properties: a very red color J-K = 1.8, broad and narrow emission-line components, and ionizing radiation as hard as 54.9 eV, as implied by the presence of the OIV 25.89 micron line. The nucleus is located within an exponential disk with colors consistent with a single stellar population of age >1 Gyr. The infrared morphology of Mrk 996 changes with wavelength. The IRS spectrum shows strong narrow Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with narrow line widths and equivalent widths that are high for the metallicity of Mrk 996. Gaseous nebular fine-structure lines are also seen. A CLOUDY model requires that they originate in two distinct HII regions: a very dense HII region of radius ~580 pc with densities declining from ~10^6 at the center to a few hundreds cm^{-3} at the outer radius, where most of the optical lines arise; and a HII region with a density of ~300 cm^{-3} that is hidden in the optical but seen in the MIR. We suggest that the infrared lines arise mainly in the optically obscured HII region while they are strongly suppressed by collisional deexcitation in the optically visible one. The hard ionizing radiation needed to account for the OIV 25.89 micron line is most likely due to fast radiative shocks propagating in an interstellar medium. A hidden population of Wolf-Rayet stars of type WNE-w or a hidden AGN as sources of hard ionizing radiation are less likely possibilities.
We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5-38micron region of three Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs): Mrk 1014 (z=0.163), and Mrk 463 (z=0.051), and UGC 5101 (z=0.039). The continua of UGC 5101 and Mrk 463 show strong silicate absorption suggesting significant optical depths to the nuclei at 10microns. UGC 5101 also shows the clear presence of water ice in absorption. PAH emission features are seen in both Mrk 1014 and UGC 5101, including the 16.4micron line in UGC 5101. The fine structure lines are consistent with dominant AGN power sources in bo…
We observed the Blue Compact Dwarf/Wolf-Rayet galaxy Mrk 178 with the NICMOS camera aboard HST. The galaxy is well resolved into individual stars in the near-IR; photometry in J and H yields color-magnitude diagrams containing 791 individual point sources. We discuss the stellar content, drawing particular attention to the intermediate age and/or old stars. Mrk 178 is only the second Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy in which the red giant branch has been resolved, indicating stars with ages of at least 1-2Gyr. This allows us to derive a distance of $\geq$4.2($\pm$0.5)Mpc. The near-IR color-magnitude …
FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the nearby metal-deficient (Zo/8) cometary Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy Mrk59 have been used to investigate element abundances in its interstellar medium. The lack of diffuse H2 (N(H2)<10e15 cm-2) is due to the combined effect of a strong UV radiation field and a low metallicity. By fitting the line profiles with multiple components having b=7kms-1 and spanning a radial velocity range of 100 kms-1, we derive heavy element abundances in the neutral gas. We find log N(OI)/N(HI)=-5.0+/-0.3, about a factor of 10 below the oxygen abundance of the supergiant HII region.
We present photometric and spectroscopic data of the interacting starburst galaxy NGC 6052 obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of the three brightest spatially resolved regions in the galaxy are remarkably similar and are consistent with dust emission from young nearly coeval stellar populations. Analysis of the brightest infrared region of the system, which contributes ~18.5 % of the total 16\micron flux, indicates that unlike similar off-nuclear infrared-bright regions found in Arp 299 or NGC 4038/9, its MIR spectrum is inconsistent with an enshrouded ho…
New FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the nearby metal-deficient (Zsun/8) cometary Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy Markarian (Mrk) 59 is discussed. The data are used to investigate element abundances in its interstellar medium. The H I absorption lines are characterized by narrow cores which are interstellar in origin and by broad wings which are stellar in origin. The mean interstellar H I column density is ~ 7x10E20 cm-2 in Mrk 59. No H2 lines are seen and N(H2) is < 10E15 cm-2 at the 10 sigma level. The lack of diffuse H2 is due to the combined effect of a strong UV radiation field which destroys…
We present Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the HI 21 cm line and Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the OH 18 cm line from the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 1. HI emission is detected from both Mrk 1 and its companion NGC 451. The HI emission morphology and the velocity field of Mrk 1 are disturbed. We speculate that the nuclear activities of Mrk 1 are triggered by tidal interactions. We have also detected two-component HI 21 cm line and the OH 18 cm line in absorption toward the nucleus of Mrk 1 at blueshifted velocities with respect to its systemic velocity indicating an ou…
We present results from a detailed spectrophotometric analysis of the blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) Mrk 370, based on deep UBVRI broad-band and Halpha narrow-band observations, and long-slit and two-dimensional spectroscopy of its brightest knots. The spectroscopic data are used to derive the internal extinction, and to compute metallicities, electronic density and temperature in the knots. By subtracting the contribution of the underlying older stellar population, modeled by an exponential function, removing the contribution from emission lines, and correcting for extinction, we can measure…
We present results on integral-field optical spectroscopy of five luminous Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies. The data were obtained using the fiber system INTEGRAL attached at the William Herschel telescope. The galaxies Mrk 370, Mrk 35, Mrk 297, Mrk 314 and III Zw 102 were observed. The central 33"x29" regions of the galaxies were mapped with a spatial resolution of 2"/spaxel, except for Mrk 314, in which we observed the central 16"x12" region with a resolution of 0.9"/spaxel$. We use high-resolution optical images to isolate the star-forming knots in the objects; line ratios, electron densities a…
We investigate the nature of the optical continuum and stellar population in the central kpc of the Seyfert 2s Mrk 348, Mrk 573, NGC 1358 and Mrk 1210 using long-slit spectra obtained along the radio or extended emission axis. These galaxies are known to have polarized continuum-including polarized broad lines in Mrk 348 and Mrk 1210--and previous studies indicate featureless continuum (FC) contributions in the 20-50% range at 5500 A. Nevertheless, our measurements of the equivalent widths of absorption lines and continuum ratios as a function of distance from the nuclei show no dilution of th…
Water vapor emission at 22 GHz is reported from the nucleus of the LINER galaxy Mrk 1419 (NGC 2960). Single-dish spectra of the maser source show properties that are similar to those seen in NGC 4258, namely (1) a cluster of systemic H2O features, (2) two additional H2O clusters, one red- and one blue-shifted by about 475 km/s, (3) a likely acceleration of the systemic features, and (4) no detectable velocity drifts in the red- and blue-shifted features. Interpreting the data in terms of the paradigm established for NGC 4258, i.e. assuming the presence of an edge-on Keplerian circumnuclear ann…
We study the correlation between the radio, mid-infrared and far-infrared properties for a sample of 28 blue compact dwarf (BCD) and low metallicity star-forming galaxies observed by Spitzer. We find that these sources extend the same far-infrared to radio correlation typical of star forming late type alaxies to lower luminosities. In BCDs, the 24um (or 22um) mid-infrared to radio correlation is similar to starburst galaxies, though there is somewhat larger dispersion in their q_24 parameter compared to their q_FIR. No strong correlations between the q parameter and galaxy metallicity or effec…
Evidence for both red- and blue-shifted absorption lines due to ionized Fe in the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 are reported. These features appear to be transient on time-scales as short as ~20 ks, and have been observed with two different satellites, BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton. The red- and blue-shifted lines are found at E~5.5 keV and ~8.1-8.3 keV (rest-frame), respectively. The first is seen in one out of six BeppoSAX observations, the latter is seen by both satellites. Under the assumption that the absorption is due to either H- or He-like Iron, the implied velocities for th…
We present a {\em Spitzer}-based mid-infrared study of a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCD) using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), including the first mid-IR spectrum of IZw18, the archetype for the BCD class and among the most metal poor galaxies known. We show the spectra of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in low-metallicity environment. We find that the equivalent widths (EW) of PAHs at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.2 $μ$m are generally weaker in BCDs than in typical starburst galaxies and that the fine structure line ratio, [NeIII]/[NeII], has a weak anti-correlation w…
We report the discovery of a double ring of emission-line regions around the nucleus of the Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy Mrk409 as seen by deep, ground-based Halpha images. Echelle spectroscopy obtained at Magellan-I with MIKE shows the presence of ionized gas flowing out of the galaxy from a very massive (>7E6 Msun) nuclear starburst with projected expansion velocities of \~50 km/s. Different scenarios for the formation of these rings are discussed. While the innermost, nuclear ring is most probably formed by the interaction of a starburst-driven shock with the surrounding interstellar med…
We present a study of elemental abundances in a sample of thirteen Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies, using the $\sim$10--37$μ$m high resolution spectra obtained with Spitzer/IRS. We derive the abundances of neon and sulfur for our sample using the infrared fine-structure lines probing regions which may be obscured by dust in the optical and compare our results with similar infrared studies of starburst galaxies from ISO. We find a good correlation between the neon and sulfur abundances, though sulfur is under-abundant relative to neon with respect to the solar value. A comparison of the eleme…
IZw18, a blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy with the 2nd lowest metallicity measured in a star-forming object, has been observed with all three instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. We present the deepest 5-36 micron mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectrum of this galaxy as yet obtained, as well as 3.6 to 70 micron imaging results. As with SBS0335-052E, another BCD with similar metallicity, IZw18 shows no detectable emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the continuum emission, from 15 to 70 micron, of IZw18 has a much steeper slope, more characteristic of a typical st…
This paper presents new X-ray observations of Mrk 231, an active galaxy of particular interest due to its large infrared luminosity and the presence of several blueshifted broad absorption line (BAL) systems, a phenomenon observed in a small fraction of QSOs. A ROSAT HRI image of Mrk 231 is presented, this shows an extended region of soft X-ray emission, covering several tens of kpc, consistent with the extent of the host galaxy. An ASCA observation of Mrk 231 is also presented. Hard X-rays are detected but the data show no significant variability in X-ray flux. The hard X-ray continuum is hea…
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 obtained in 1999 November with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915-1185 A at a resolution of ~20 km/s. The spectrum shows a blue continuum, broad OVI 1032,1038 emission, and a broad CIII 977 emission line. Superposed on these emission components, we resolve associated absorption lines of OVI 1032,1038, CIII 977, and Lyman lines through Lzeta. Seven distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of -440 to +170 km/s relative to the systemic velo…
A 100ks XMM-Newton observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 offers a unique opportunity to explore the complexity of its X-ray spectrum. We find the \~3-8 keV continuum to be dominated by reflection from cold matter, with fluorescent K-shell lines detected from Ni, Fe, Ca, Ar, S, Si and Mg. At higher energies an intrinsic power law continuum, with canonical Seyfert 1 photon index, is seen through a near-Compton-thick cold absorber. A soft excess below \~3 keV is found to be dominated by line emission from an outflow of `warm' gas, photo-ionised and photo-excited by the intrinsically st…
Detailed line profile variability studies of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk110 are presented. We obtained the spectra in a variability campaign carried out with the 9.2m Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. The integrated Balmer and Helium (HeI,II) emission lines are delayed by 3 to 33 light days to the optical continuum variations respectively. The outer wings of the line profiles respond much faster to continuum variations than the central regions. The comparison of the observed profile variations with model calculations of different velocity fields indicates an accretion di…
We have used HST I-band images to identify Mrk 273X, the very unusual high-redshift X-ray-luminous Seyfert 2 galaxy found by ROSAT in the same field-of-view as Mrk 273. We have measured the photometric properties of Mrk 273X and have also analyzed the luminosity distribution of the faint galaxy population seen in the HST image. The luminosity of the galaxy and the properties of the surrounding environment suggest that Mrk 273X is the brightest galaxy in a relatively poor cluster at a redshift near 0.46. Its off-center location in the cluster and the presence of other galaxy groupings in the HS…
Here we present the analysis of 3D spectroscopic data of three Blue Compact Galaxies (Mrk324, Mrk370, and IIIZw102). Each of the more than 22500 spectra obtained for each galaxy has been fitted by a single gaussian from which we have inferred the velocity dispersion (sigma), the peak intensity (Ipeak), and the central wavelength (lambda_c). The analysis shows that the sigma vs Ipeak diagrams look remarkably similar to those obtained for giant extragalactic HII regions. They all present a supersonic narrow horizontal band that extends across all the range of intensities and that result from the…
We have mapped the 12CO J=1-0 and J=2-1 line emission in Mrk86, one of the most metal-deficient Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies so far detected in 12CO. The 12CO emission is distributed in a horseshoe-like structure that follows the locus of the most recent star formation regions. The minimum in molecular-line emission corresponds to the position of an older, massive nuclear starburst. The H2 mass of the galaxy (in the range 0.4-5x10^7 Msun) and its morphology have been compared with the predictions of hydrodynamic simulations of the evolution of the interstellar medium surrounding a nuclear starb…
The unprecedented sensitivity of the Spitzer Space Telescope has enabled us for the first time to detect a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs), which are intrinsically faint in the infrared. In the present paper we present a summary of our findings which providing essential information on the presence/absence of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon features in metal-poor environments. In addition, using Spitzer/IRS high-resolution spectroscopy, we study the elemental abundances of neon and sulfur in BCDs and compare with the results from optical studies. Finally, we present an an…
In this paper, continuation of Gil de Paz et al. (Paper I), we derive the main properties of the stellar populations in the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy Mrk86. Ages, stellar masses, metallicites and burst strengths have been obtained using the combination of Monte Carlo simulations, a maximum likelihood estimator and Cluster and Principal Component Analysis. The three stellar populations detected show well defined properties. We have studied the underlying stellar population, which shows an age between 5-13 Gyr and no significant color gradients. The intermediate aged (30 Myr old) central starbur…
"Cometary" Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies (iI,C BCDs) are characterized by off-center starbursts close to the end of an elongated dwarf irregular (dI)-like host galaxy. This may either represent randomly enhanced star-forming activity of a dI, or may be caused by a set of special properties of such systems or their environment. For a first investigation of this issue, we analyse the nearby iI,C BCDs Markarian 59 and Markarian 71. Using deep ground-based spectrophotometric data and HST images, we derive physical properties, structure and ages of the starburst regions and the underlying stellar hos…
We present the results of UV imaging polarimetry of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 477 taken by the Faint Object Camera onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). From a previous HST UV image (lambda ~ 2180A), Mrk 477 has been known to have a pointlike bright UV hotspot in the central region, peculiar among nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies. There are also claims of UV/optical variability, unusual for a Seyfert 2 galaxy. Our data show that there is an off-nuclear scattering region ~ 0."6 (~ 500 pc) NE from the hotspot. The data, after the subtraction of the instrumental effect due to this bright hotspot regi…
We have obtained optical (BVR, [OIII]5007 and Halpha), near infrared (JHK) imaging and long-slit optical spectroscopy for the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy Mrk86 (NGC2537). In this paper, the first of two, we present optical-near- infrared colors and emission-line fluxes for the currently star-forming regions, intemediate aged starburst and underlying stellar population. We also describe the evolutionary synthesis models used in Paper II. The R and Halpha luminosity distributions of the galaxy star-forming regions show maxima at M_R=-9.5 and L_Halpha=10^37.3 erg s^-1. The underlying stellar popula…
We report the detection of a new H_2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348 with the MPIfR 100 m telescope in Effelsberg. With an apparent isotropic luminosity of L_H2O ~ 420 L_sun the maser is the third most luminous maser discovered so far. The detected line is unusually broad (Delta v ~ 130 km/s), is redshifted by ~130 km/s from the systemic velocity, and is asymmetric with a pronounced blue wing. While evidence for obscuring material towards the nucleus of this galaxy was found earlier, this detection is the first direct observation of molecular material in the vicinity of the AGN. We …
We present HST NICMOS+ACS and Spitzer IRAC+MIPS observations of 41 galaxies at 2<z<3.5 in the FIRES MS1054 field with red and blue rest-frame optical colors. About half of the galaxies are very compact (effective radii r_e < 1 kpc) at rest-frame optical wavelengths, the others are extended (1< r_e < 10 kpc). For reference, 1 kpc corresponds to 0.12 arcsec at z=2.5 in the adopted cosmology. We separate actively star forming galaxies from quiescent galaxies by modeling their rest-frame UV-NIR SEDs. The star forming galaxies span the full range of sizes, while the quiescent galaxies all have r_e<…
We report results of $^{12}$CO ($J=1$-0) mapping observations of the Wolf-Rayet starburst galaxy Mrk 1259 which has optical evidence for the superwind seen from a nearly pole-on view. The CO emission is detected in the central 4 kpc region. The nuclear CO spectrum shows a blue-shifted ($ΔV \simeq -27$ km s$^{-1}$) broad (FWHM $\simeq$ 114 km s$^{-1}$) component as well as the narrow one (FWHM $\simeq 68$ km s$^{-1}$). The off-nuclear CO spectra also show the single-peaked broad component (FWHM $\simeq$ 100 km s$^{-1}$). The single-peaked CO profiles of both the nuclear and off-nuclear regions …
We study the mid-infrared properties of 1315 spectroscopically confirmed members in eight massive (M>5x10^14 Msun) galaxy clusters covering the redshift range from 0.02 to 0.83. The selected clusters all have deep Spitzer MIPS 24um observations, Hubble and ground-based photometry, and extensive redshift catalogs. We observe for the first time an increase in the fraction of cluster galaxies with mid-infrared star formation rates higher than 4 solar masses per year from 3% at z=0.02 to 13% at z=0.83. This increase is reproduced even when considering only the most massive members (Mstars >4x10^10…
Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared photometry is presented for the globular cluster (GC) systems of the NGC 5128 ("Centaurus A") and NGC 4594 ("Sombrero") galaxies. Existing optical photometric and spectroscopic are combined with this new data in a comprehensive optical to mid-IR colour catalogue of 260 GCs. Empirical colour-metallicity relationships are derived for all optical to mid-IR colour combinations. These colours prove to be very effective quantities to test the photometric predictions of simple stellar population (SSP) models. In general, four SSP models show larger discrepancies between each…
We present measurements of radial velocities for the narrow-line region gas (NLR) in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 out to ~1 kpc from the nucleus. The observations consist of two datasets, both using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope: 1) An [O III] slitless spectrum with the G430M grating of the inner 3" around the nucleus, and 2) a long-slit observation centered on the nucleus (PA = 71 deg) using the G430L grating and the 52" x 0".1 aperture. Our results produce radial velocity maps of the emission-line gas. These maps indicate general trends in the gas…
We present UV imaging polarimetry data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The polarized flux is found to be extended to ~1 kpc from the nucleus, and the position angles of polarization are centrosymmetric, confirming that the polarization is caused by scattering. We determine the location of the hidden nucleus as the center of this centrosymmetric pattern. From the polarization images taken in two broad bands, we have obtained the color distribution of the polarized flux. Some regions have blue polarized flux, consistent with optically-thin dust scattering, but …
Near-infrared and optical spectroscopy of the nuclear and extended emission region of the Seyfert2 galaxy Mrk1210 is presented. This galaxy is outstanding because it displays signatures of recent circumnuclear star formation and a high-level of X-ray activity, in addition to the classical spectral characteristics typical of an AGN. The NIR nuclear spectrum, which covers the interval 0.8-2.4 microns, is dominated by HI and HeI recombination lines as well a [SII], [SIII] and [Fe II] forbidden lines. Coronal lines of [SVIII], [SIX], [SiVI], [SiX], and [CaVIII] in addition to molecular H_2 lines a…
We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the well-studied extremely red objects (EROs) HR10 and LBDS53W091 from 3.6 to 160 microns. These galaxies are the prototypes of the two primary classes of EROs: dusty starbursts and old, evolved galaxies, respectively. Both galaxies, as well as LBDS53W069, another example of an old, quiescent galaxy, are well-detected out to 8 microns. However, only the dusty starburst HR10 is detected in the far-infrared. All three EROs have stellar masses of a few times 10^11 M(sun). Using evolutionary model fits to their multiband photometry, we predict the…
We present a detailed photoionisation model of the brightest knot of star format ion in the blue compact dwarf galaxy Mrk 209. The model reproduces the intensiti es of main lines emitted by the ionised gas, resulting in a very good agreement between observed and predicted line temperatures and chemical abundances of the observed ionic species. The model has been calculated using the spectral energy distribution of a massive cluster of recent formation as the ionising source. The features of Wolf-Rayet stars observed in the spectrum of the object, along with its ionising properties, lead to dif…
We have carried out an extensive radio study with the Very Large Array on the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Mrk 6 and imaged a spectacular radio structure in the source. The radio emission occurs on three different spatial scales, from ~7.5 kpc bubbles to ~1.5 kpc bubbles lying nearly orthogonal to them and a ~1 kpc radio jet lying orthogonal to the kpc-scale bubble. To explain the complex morphology, we first consider a scenario in which the radio structures are the result of superwinds ejected by a nuclear starburst. However, recent Spitzer observations of Mrk 6 provide an upper limit to the star forma…
We report the results of near-IR imaging in J and H, of I Zw 36 ($\approx$Z$_{\odot}$/14) with the Hubble Space Telescope. Whereas imaging with the pre-COSTAR Faint Object Camera (FOC) previously resolved hot and massive stars in the near-UV, the NICMOS data furnish a census of the cool, intermediate- and low-mass stars. There clearly was star formation in I Zw 36 prior to the activity which earned it its Blue Compact Dwarf/Wolf-Rayet galaxy classification. The detection of luminous, asymptotic giant branch stars requires that stars formed vigorously several hundred Myr ago. The well-populated…
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of two luminous blue variable (LBV) stars in two extremely metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies, DDO 68 with 12+logO/H = 7.15 and PHL 293B with 12+logO/H = 7.72. These two BCDs are the lowest-metallicity galaxies where LBV stars have been detected, allowing to study the LBV phenomenon in the extremely low metallicity regime, and shedding light of the evolution of the first generation of massive stars born from primordial gas. We find that the strong outburst of the LBV star in DDO 68 occurred sometime between February 2007 and …
We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5-38 micron region of the ten Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) found in the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample. Among the BGS ULIRGs, we find a factor of 50 spread in the rest-frame mid to far-infrared spectral slope. The 9.7 micron silicate optical depths range from less than 0.4 more than 4.2, implying line of sight extinctions of A(V) ~ 8 - 78 mag. There is evidence for water ice and hydrocarbon absorption and C2H2 and HCN absorption features in four and possibly six of the 10 BGS ULIRGs, indicating shielded mole…
Late-time observations of GRB970508 with the SAO-RAS 6-m telescope in July-August 1998 show that the optical transient (OT) varies very little since November 1997. Here we report the $BVR_cI_c$ light-curves behaviour up to 470 days from the GRB occurence with independent $BVR_cI_c$ power-law fits. After ~=200 days the power-law decay has ceased and the OT contamination to the host galaxy flux is already less than the observational errors of the brightness estimates. Spectral energy distribution for the host galaxy alone (without OT) and comparison of its broad-band spectrum to the average cont…
Recent observations have demonstrated a significant growth in the integrated stellar mass of the red sequence since z=1, dominated by a steadily increasing number of galaxies with stellar masses M* < 10^11 M_sun. In this paper, we use the COMBO-17 photometric redshift survey in conjunction with deep Spitzer 24 micron data to explore the relationship between star formation and the growth of stellar mass. We calculate `star formation rate functions' in four different redshift slices, splitting also into contributions from the red sequence and blue cloud for the first time. We find that the growt…
We present results from a detailed spectrophotometric analysis of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Mrk 35 (Haro 3), based on deep optical (B,V,R,I) and near-IR (J,H,K) imaging, Halpha narrow-band observations and long-slit spectroscopy. The optical emission of the galaxy is dominated by a central young starburst, with a bar-like shape, while an underlying component of stars, with elliptical isophotes and red colors, extends more than 4 kpc from the galaxy center. High resolution Halpha and color maps allow us to identify the star-forming regions, to spatially discriminate them from the older star…
We present Spitzer infrared imaging of the peculiar galaxy pair Arp 107, and compare with an optical H-alpha map and a numerical model of the interaction. The [3.6 micron] - [4.5 micron] colors of clumps in the galaxy do not vary around the ring-like primary spiral arm and are consistent with those of stars, thus these bands are dominated by starlight. In contrast, the [5.8 micron] - [8.0 micron] colors are consistent with those of interstellar dust, and vary by about 0.2 magnitudes around the ring/spiral, with redder colors associated with regions with stronger star formation as indicated by …
Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the newly discovered peculiar L dwarf 2MASS J11263991-5003550 are presented. Folkes et al. identified this source as a high proper motion L9+/-1 dwarf based on its strong H2O absorption at 1.4 micron. We find that the optical spectrum of 2MASS J1126-5003 is in fact consistent with that of a normal L4.5 dwarf with notably enhanced FeH absorption at 9896 A. However, its near-infrared spectrum is unusually blue, with strong H2O and weak CO bands similar in character to several recently identified ``blue L dwarfs''. Using 2MASS J1126-5003 as a case study, …
SBS0335-052 is a blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) with one of the lowest known metallicities, Z$\sim$Z$_{\sun}$/41, making it a local example of how primordial starburst galaxies and their precursors might appear. A spectrum obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope clearly shows silicate absorption features, emission lines of [SIV] and [NeIII], and puts strong upper limits on the PAH emission features. The observed low resolution spectrum (R~90) extends from 5.3 to 35microns and peaks at ~28microns. The spectrum is compared to IRS observations of the prototyp…
We present Spitzer observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) Haro 3, with an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)=8.32. These data are part of a larger study of star formation and dust in low-metallicity environments. The IRS spectrum of Haro 3 shows strong narrow Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with high equivalent widths. Gaseous nebular fine-structure lines are also seen. Despite the absence of optical high-excitation lines, a faint high-ionization [O IV] line at 25.89 micron indicates the presence of radiation as hard as 54.9 eV. A CLOUDY model suggests that the MIR lin…
We present new L' (3.75 um) photometry of six L and T dwarfs, and M' (4.70 um) photometry of ten L and T dwarfs, observed at Gemini Observatory, and new 3.55, 4.49, 5.73 and 7.87 um photometry of nine L and T dwarfs, obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The sample includes unusually blue and red dwarfs from our near-infrared studies. The data are combined with published L', M' and Spitzer photometry of L and T dwarfs, and trends of colors with spectral type and other colors are examined. Model atmospheres by Marley and Saumon are used to generate synthetic colors for ranges of effective …
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Spitzer Space Telescope images and photometry of the extremely metal-poor (Z = 0.03 Z_sol) blue dwarf galaxy CGCG 269-049. The HST images reveal a large population of red giant and asymptotic giant branch stars, ruling out the possibility that the galaxy has recently formed. From the magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch, we measure a distance to CGCG 269-049 of only 4.9 +/- 0.4 Mpc. The spectral energy distribution of the galaxy between ~3.6 - 70 microns is also best fitted by emission from predominantly ~10 Gyr old stars, with a component of…
We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 simultaneously with Chandra/HETG, HST/STIS and RXTE. We measure strong absorption lines from He-like Ne and Mg, and from H-like N, O, and Ne. The lines are unresolved except for Ne Lya and Ne IX(r). The absorption-line profiles are blueshifted by ~200 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of Mrk 509, and there is a hint of another component near systemic. The soft X-ray spectrum can be described in remarkable detail with a simple, single-zone photoionized absorber with a column density of 2.06 (+0.39,-0.45) x 10^21 cm^-2 and an ionization parameter…
