We present results on integral-field optical spectroscopy of five luminous Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies. The data were obtained using the fiber system INTEGRAL attached at the William Herschel telescope. The galaxies Mrk 370, Mrk 35, Mrk 297, Mrk 314 and III Zw 102 were observed. The central 33"x29" regions of the galaxies were mapped with a spatial resolution of 2"/spaxel, except for Mrk 314, in which we observed the central 16"x12" region with a resolution of 0.9"/spaxel$. We use high-resolution optical images to isolate the star-forming knots in the objects; line ratios, electron densities and oxygen abundances in each of these regions are computed. We build continuum and emission-line intensity maps as well as maps of the most relevant line ratios: [OIII]5007\Hb, [NII]6584\Ha, and Ha\Hb, which allow us to obtain spatial information on the ionization structure and mechanisms. We also derive the gas velocity field from the Ha and [OIII]5007 emission lines.
We find that all the five galaxies are in the high end of the metallicity range of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies, with oxygen abundances varying from Z\sun~0.3 to Z\sun~1.5. The objects show HII-like ionization in the whole field of view, except the outer regions of IIIZw102 whose large [NII]6584/Ha values suggest the presence of shocks. The five galaxies display inhomogeneous extinction patterns, and three of them have high Ha/Hb ratios, indicative of a large dust content; all galaxies display complex, irregular velocity fields in their inner regions.
We present HST/WFPC2 single-star photometry for the blue dwarf galaxy UGCA 290, whose morphology is intermediate between classic iE Blue Compact Dwarfs and blue dwarfs which exhibit no red background sheet of older stars. The color-magnitude diagram of this galaxy in V and I, extending over six magnitudes, is remarkably similar to that of the star-forming region in the iE Blue Compact Dwarf VII Zw 403. There is no evidence for gaps in its star-formation history over the last billion years, and the color of its red giant branch indicates a very metal-poor stellar population. From the magnitude …
In the context of dwarf spheroidal galaxies it is hard to firmly disentangle a genuine Blue Stragglers (BSS) population from a normal young main (MS) sequence. This difficulty is persistent. For a sample of 9 non-star forming Local Group dwarf galaxies we compute the ``BSS frequency'' and compare it with that found in the Milky Way globular/open clusters and halo. The comparison shows that the BSS-frequency in dwarf galaxies, at any given Mv, is always higher than that in globular clusters of similar luminosities. Moreover, the estimated BSS-frequency for the lowest luminosity dwarf galaxies i…
We compute chi values for blue emission lines in active M dwarfs. Using flux-calibrated spectra from nearby M dwarfs and spectral M dwarf templates from SDSS, we derive analytic relations that describe how the chi values for the CaII H and K as well as the H-beta, H-gamma, H-delta, H-epsilon and H8 Balmer emission lines vary as a function of spectral type and color. The chi values are useful for numerous M dwarf studies where the intrinsic luminosity of emission lines cannot be estimated due to uncertain distances and/or non-flux-calibrated spectra. We use these results to estimate the mean pr…
Abridged... Blue stragglers (BSS) are thought to be the product of either primordial or collisional binary systems. In the context of dwarf spheroidal galaxies it is hard to firmly disentangle a genuine BSS population from young main sequence (MS) stars tracing a ~1-2 Gyr old star forming episode. Assuming that their blue plume populations are made of BSS, we estimate the BSS frequency for 8 Local Group non star-forming dwarf galaxies, using a compilation of ground and space based photometry. Our results can be summarized as follows: (i) The BSS frequency in dwarf galaxies, at any given Mv, is…
We present first results of a study devoted to the analysis of the X-ray emission as tracer of activity and diagnostic tool for the structural properties of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies. The case of Henize 2-10 is being reviewed, and first trends are discussed.
We present evidence for the existence of an old stellar halo in the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy VII Zw 403. VII Zw 403 is the first Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy for which a clear spatial segregation of the resolved stellar content into a "core-halo" structure is detected. Multicolor HST/WFPC2 observations indicate that active star formation occurs in the central region, but is strikingly absent at large radii. Instead, a globular-cluster-like red giant branch suggests the presence of an old (> 10 Gyr) and metal poor (<[Fe/H]>=-1.92) stellar population in the halo. While the vast majority of Blue Co…
We present the results of numerical simulations which show the formation of blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies from merging between very gas-rich dwarfs with extended HI gas disks. We show that dwarf-dwarf merging can trigger central starbursts and form massive compact cores dominated by young stellar populations. We also show that the pre-existing old stellar components in merger precursor dwarfs can become diffuse low surface brightness components after merging. The compact cores dominated by younger stellar populations and embedded in more diffusely distributed older ones can be morphologica…
HST WFPC2 observations of the nearby Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy VII~Zw~403 (= UGC 6456) resolve single stars down to M$_I$$\approx$-2.5, deep enough to identify red giants. This population has a more uniform spatial distribution than the young main-sequence stars and supergiants, forming the structure known as "Baade's red sheet". We conclude that VII~Zw~403 is not a primeval galaxy.
We present the properties of the supernova SN 1995ah discovered in a Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy (BCD) around 10 days after the maximum. This is the first supernova event observed in a BCD. The photometric and spectroscopic data suggest that SN 1995ah is a Type II supernova and could belong to the rare Bright SNII Linear subclass, for which <M(R)>~<M(B)>=-18.9+-0.6 at maximum light.
We analyze deep CCD images of nearby Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies in an attempt to understand the nature of the progenitors which are hosting the current burst of star formation. In particular, we ask whether BCDs are hosted by normal or low-surface-brightness dI galaxies. We conclude that BCDs are in fact hosted by gas-rich galaxies which populate the extreme high-central-mass-density end of the dwarf galaxy distribution. Such galaxies are predisposed to having numerous strong bursts of star formation in their central regions. In this picture, BCDs can only occur in the minority of dwarf…
The results of the N/O abundance determination in a sample of low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies based on new spectroscopic observations with large telescopes (Keck, VLT, MMT, 4m KPNO) are presented. We show that the N/O abundance ratio is constant at lowest metallicities < Zsun/20, confirming previous findings and strongly supporting the origin of nitrogen as a primary element.
We explore the nature of the faint blue objects in the Hubble Deep Field South. We have derived proper motions for the point sources in the Hubble Deep Field South using a 3 year baseline. Combining our proper motion measurements with spectral energy distribution fitting enabled us to identify 4 quasars and 42 stars, including 3 white dwarf candidates. Two of these white dwarf candidates, HDFS 1444 and 895, are found to display significant proper motion, 21.1 $\pm$ 7.9 mas/yr and 34.9 $\pm$ 8.0 mas/yr, and are consistent with being thick disk or halo white dwarfs located at ~2 kpc. The other f…
We investigate the importance of the far red wing of the Lyman $ α$ line of hydrogen in the atmospheres of cool white dwarfs of pure hydrogen composition. We find that this absorption process dominates all important sources of opacity in the blue part of the optical spectrum of these stars. Our successful fits to the spectra of cool DA/DC white dwarfs indicate that the far red wing of the $\rm Ly α$ line is the source of opacity that had been missing in the models. The observed sequence of cool white dwarfs in color-color diagrams is very well reproduced by our new pure hydrogen atmosphere mod…
Understanding how galaxies formed their first stars is a vital cosmological question, but the study of high-redshift objects, caught in the act of forming their first stars, is difficult. Here we argue that two extremely low-metallicity Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs), IZw18 and SBS0335-052, could be local templates for primordial star formation, since both lack evolved ($> $1 Gyr) stellar populations; but they form stars differently.
Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the newly discovered peculiar L dwarf 2MASS J11263991-5003550 are presented. Folkes et al. identified this source as a high proper motion L9+/-1 dwarf based on its strong H2O absorption at 1.4 micron. We find that the optical spectrum of 2MASS J1126-5003 is in fact consistent with that of a normal L4.5 dwarf with notably enhanced FeH absorption at 9896 A. However, its near-infrared spectrum is unusually blue, with strong H2O and weak CO bands similar in character to several recently identified ``blue L dwarfs''. Using 2MASS J1126-5003 as a case study, …
We present the results of high spatial resolution HI synthesis observations of six blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies. Optically, the selected galaxies have smooth, symmetric isophotes, and thus are the most likely of the BCD class to fade into an object morphologically similar to a dwarf elliptical when the current starburst ends. The neutral gas in all six galaxies appears to be rotationally supported, however, indicating that true morphological transformation from a BCD to a dE will require significant loss of angular momentum. Based on the observed neutral gas dynamics of these and other BC…
The unprecedented sensitivity of the Spitzer Space Telescope has enabled us for the first time to detect a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs), which are intrinsically faint in the infrared. In the present paper we present a summary of our findings which providing essential information on the presence/absence of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon features in metal-poor environments. In addition, using Spitzer/IRS high-resolution spectroscopy, we study the elemental abundances of neon and sulfur in BCDs and compare with the results from optical studies. Finally, we present an an…
High resolution, ground based R and I band observations of the ultra compact dwarf galaxy POX 186 are presented. The data, obtained with the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT), are analyzed using a new deconvolution algorithm which allows one to resolve the innermost regions of this stellar-like object into three Super-Star Clusters (SSC). Upper limits to both masses (M\sim 10^5 M_{\odot}) and the physical sizes (\le 60pc) of the SSCs are set. In addition, and maybe most importantly, extended light emission underlying the compact star-forming region is clearly detected in both bands. The R-I c…
In a spectroscopic survey of the Fornax cluster to Bj=17.5 using the FLAIR spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope we have discovered seven new compact dwarf cluster members. These were previously thought to be giant background spirals. These new members are among the most compact, high surface brightness dwarf galaxies known with absolute magnitudes of M_B=-14 and scale lengths of alpha=400 pc. One in particular may be the first high (normal) surface brightness dwarf spiral discovered. Three of the new dwarfs are blue compact dwarfs (BCDs); their inclusion in the cluster increases the faint …
We present near-infrared single-star photometry for the low-metallicity Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy VII~Zw~403. We achieve limiting magnitudes of F110W~$\approx$~25.5 and F160W~$\approx$~24.5 using one of the NICMOS cameras with the HST equivalents of the ground-based J and H filters. The data have a high photometric precision (0.1 mag) and are $>95$% complete down to magnitudes of about 23, far deeper than previous ground-based studies in the near-IR. The color-magnitude diagram contains about 1000 point sources. We provide a preliminary transformation of the near-IR photometry into the ground …
I present optical observations of the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy UM 462. The images of this galaxy show several bright compact sources. A careful study of these sources has revealed their nature of young Super Star Clusters. The ages determined from the analysis of the stellar continuum and $Hα$ are between few and few tens Myr. The total star formation taking place into the clusters is about 0.05 $\mathrm{M_{\odot}/yr}$. The clusters seem to be located at the edges of two large round-like structures, possibly shells originated in a previous episode of star formation. The sizes of the shells co…
The discovery of the high-ionization [Ne V] 3426A emission line in the spectrum of the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy Tol 1214-277 is reported. The detection of this line implies the presence of intense ionizing X-ray emission with a luminosity in the range 10^39-10^40 erg/s. Such a high X-ray luminosity cannot be reproduced by models of massive stellar populations. Other mechanisms, such as fast shocks or accretion of gas in high-mass X-ray binaries need to be invoked to account for the high intensity of the [Ne V] 3426A emission line.
We measure the apparent shapes for a sample of 62 blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs), and compare them with the apparent shapes for a sample of 80 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs). The BCDs are flatter, on average, than the dEs, but the difference is only marginally significant. We then use both non-parametric and parametric techniques to determine possible distributions of intrinsic shapes for the BCDs. The hypothesis that BCDs are oblate spheroids can be ruled out with a high confidence level ($> 99%$), but the hypothesis that they are prolate spheroids cannot be excluded. The apparent shapes…
We find that NGC6789 is the most nearby example of a Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy known to date. With the help of WFPC2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we resolve NGC6789 into over 15,000 point sources in the V and I bands. The young stars of NGC6789 are found exclusively near the center of the galaxy. The red giant population identified at large galacticentric radii yields a distance of about 3.6 Mpc, a stellar metallicity [Fe/H] of about -2, and a minimum age of about 1 Gyr. Despite its isolated location in the Local Void, its low metallicity, and its active star formation, the properties of …
We observed the Blue Compact Dwarf/Wolf-Rayet galaxy Mrk 178 with the NICMOS camera aboard HST. The galaxy is well resolved into individual stars in the near-IR; photometry in J and H yields color-magnitude diagrams containing 791 individual point sources. We discuss the stellar content, drawing particular attention to the intermediate age and/or old stars. Mrk 178 is only the second Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy in which the red giant branch has been resolved, indicating stars with ages of at least 1-2Gyr. This allows us to derive a distance of $\geq$4.2($\pm$0.5)Mpc. The near-IR color-magnitude …
We present the observational properties of the dwarf galaxy population (Mr > M*+1) corresponding to one of the largest samples of spectroscopically confirmed galaxy cluster members reported in the literature. We have observed that red dwarf galaxies (u-r > 2.22) share the same cluster environment as the brightest cluster members (Mr < -21), but are not in dynamical equilibrium. We computed the dwarf-to-giant ratio (DGR) using a spectroscopically selected sample. The DGR was found to vary with clustercentric distance, essentially due to the blue dwarf population (u-r < 2.22). The u-r color of r…
We present optical spectroscopy of H {\sc ii} regions in the Local Group galaxy IC 10 and $UBVR$ photometry of foreground stars in three fields towards this galaxy. From these data, we find that the foreground reddening due to the Milky Way is $E(B-V)=0.77\pm 0.07 \mathrm{mag}$. We find that IC 10 contains considerable internal dust, which qualitatively explains the variety of reddening values found by studies of its different stellar populations. Based upon our foreground reddening, IC 10 has intrinsic photometric properties like those of a blue compact dwarf galaxy, and not those of a dwarf …
Large populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in globular clusters have long been predicted, but the number of absolutely certain cluster CVs known in globulars is still less than 10. HST and Chandra observers have recently found dozens of cataclysmic variable candidates in several populous globular clusters. Confirmation and characterization of these candidates are extremely difficult, thus identification of unambiguous CVs remains important. We have searched all archival HST images of the dense globular cluster M80 for erupting dwarf novae (DN), and to check the outburst behaviors of two …
We study the correlation between the radio, mid-infrared and far-infrared properties for a sample of 28 blue compact dwarf (BCD) and low metallicity star-forming galaxies observed by Spitzer. We find that these sources extend the same far-infrared to radio correlation typical of star forming late type alaxies to lower luminosities. In BCDs, the 24um (or 22um) mid-infrared to radio correlation is similar to starburst galaxies, though there is somewhat larger dispersion in their q_24 parameter compared to their q_FIR. No strong correlations between the q parameter and galaxy metallicity or effec…
We determine and examine the star-formation rates of 50 well known, local Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies based on their 1.4 GHz and 60 $μ$m luminosities. We find that in cases for which both radio and far-infrared luminosities are available, the resulting star-formation rates agree extremely well with one another. We determine that the star-formation rates of the BCD galaxies in our sample span nearly five orders of magnitude, from approximately a few times 10$^{-3}$ to several times 10$^{1}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, with a median SFR of about 0.3$ $M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. We discuss trends of met…
Using data derived from the deepest and finest angular resolution images of the universe yet acquired by astronomers at optical wavelengths using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in two postage-stamp sections of the sky (Williams et al. 1996a,b), plus simple geometrical and scaling arguments, we demonstrate that the faint blue population of point-source objects detected on those two fields (Méndez et al. 1996) could actually be ancient halo white dwarfs at distances closer than about 2 kpc from the Sun. This finding has profound implications, as the mass density of the detected objects would a…
We present the results of high spatial resolution HI observations of five intrinsically compact dwarf galaxies which are currently experiencing a strong burst of star formation. The HI maps indicate that these systems have a complex and clumpy interstellar medium. Unlike typical dwarf irregular galaxies, these Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies exhibit strong central concentrations in their neutral gas distributions which may provide a clue to the origin of their strong star-burst activity. Furthermore, while all of the systems do appear to be rotating, based on observed velocity gradients, the…
We present the discovery of a peculiar blue core in the elliptical galaxy IC 225 by using images and spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The outer parts of the surface brightness profiles of u-, g-, r-, i- and z-band SDSS images for IC 225 are well fitted with an exponential function. The fitting results show that IC 225 follows the same relations between the magnitude, scale length and central surface brightness for dwarf elliptical galaxies. Its absolute blue magnitude (M_B) is -17.14 mag, all of which suggest that IC 225 is a typical dwarf elliptical galaxy. The g-r color pro…
Dwarf galaxies play an important role in our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution, and starbursts are believed to strongly affect their structure and evolution. Here we present a study of 12 of the nearest dwarf galaxies thought to be undergoing starbursts as selected primarily by morphology. We show that these "blue amorphous galaxies" are not physically distinguishable from dwarfs selected as starbursting by other methods, such as blue compact dwarfs and HII galaxies. All these classes exhibit exponential surface brightness profiles in their outer regions but often have a central …
We present 3.6m ESO telescope spectroscopic observations of the system of the two blue compact dwarf galaxies SBS 0335-052W and SBS 0335-052E. The oxygen abundance in SBS 0335-052W is 12 + log O/H = 7.13 +/- 0.08, confirming that this galaxy is the most metal-deficient emission-line galaxy known. We find that the oxygen abundance in SBS 0335-052E varies from region to region in the range from 7.20 to 7.31, suggesting the presence of an abundance gradient over a spatial scale of 1 kpc. Signatures of early carbon-type Wolf-Rayet stars are detected in cluster 3 of SBS 0335-052E, corresponding to …
We have observed the Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy He 2-10 in the 10 microns mid-infrared (MIR) atmospheric window using broad-band filters centered at lambda=10.1 microns and lambda=11.65 microns. In both filters, only the galaxy's central regions were detected. One of the UV emitting regions is not detected, implying an older age. The central region contains two resolved components which have the same MIR properties but different Halpha fluxes. We interpret these properties in terms of differing star forming histories. Based on its morphology, we show that the MIR emission is unambiguously…
This paper investigates the origin of the observed large variety in dust-to-gas ratio among blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs). By applying our chemical evolution model, we find that the dust destruction can largely suppress the dust-to-gas ratio when the metallicity of a BCD reaches $12+\log{\rm (O/H)}\sim 8$, i.e., a typical metallicity level of BCDs. We also show that dust-to-gas ratio is largely varied owing to the change of dust destruction efficiency that has two effects: (i) a significant contribution of Type Ia supernovae to total supernova rate; (ii) variation of gas mass contained in…
We present VLA HI imaging of two blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies, Haro 2 and Haro 4, and of the spiral galaxy Haro 26, which is projected some 22' SW of Haro 4. We also show a map of the CO(1-0) distribution of Haro 2 obtained with the OVRO millimeter array, as well as derive an upper limit for CO(2-1) emission from Haro 4 obtained with the CSO. The HI data of Haro 2 reveal that the kinematical major axis lies perpendicular to the photometric major axis, indicating that the atomic hydrogen rotates about the major axis of the galaxy. This confirms earlier indications based on CCD photometry t…
We present the results from an analysis of surface photometry of B, R, and Halpha images of a total of 114 nearby galaxies drawn from the Palomar/Las Campanas Imaging Atlas of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies. Surface brightness and color profiles for the complete sample have been obtained. We determine the exponential and Sersic profiles that best fit the surface brightness distribution of the underlying stellar population detected in these galaxies. We also compute the (B-R) color and total absolute magnitude of the underlying stellar population and compared them to the integrated properties of t…
We present a {\em Spitzer}-based mid-infrared study of a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCD) using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), including the first mid-IR spectrum of IZw18, the archetype for the BCD class and among the most metal poor galaxies known. We show the spectra of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in low-metallicity environment. We find that the equivalent widths (EW) of PAHs at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.2 $μ$m are generally weaker in BCDs than in typical starburst galaxies and that the fine structure line ratio, [NeIII]/[NeII], has a weak anti-correlation w…
A new installment of neutral hydrogen mappings of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies, as defined by optical morphology, in and near the Virgo cluster is presented. The primary motivation was to search for outlying clouds of HI as potential interactive triggers of the enhanced star formation, and therefore the mapped galaxies were selected for large HI} mass, large optical diameter, and large velocity profile width. Approximately half the sample proved to have one or more small, low column density star-free companion clouds, either detached or appearing as an appendage in our maps, at resolution of or…
We report the results of near-IR imaging in J and H, of I Zw 36 ($\approx$Z$_{\odot}$/14) with the Hubble Space Telescope. Whereas imaging with the pre-COSTAR Faint Object Camera (FOC) previously resolved hot and massive stars in the near-UV, the NICMOS data furnish a census of the cool, intermediate- and low-mass stars. There clearly was star formation in I Zw 36 prior to the activity which earned it its Blue Compact Dwarf/Wolf-Rayet galaxy classification. The detection of luminous, asymptotic giant branch stars requires that stars formed vigorously several hundred Myr ago. The well-populated…
New infrared and millimeter observations from Keck, Palomar, ISO, and OVRO and archival data from the NRAO VLA and IRAS are presented for the low metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. Mid-infrared imaging shows this young star-forming system is compact (0.31"; 80 pc) at 12.5 microns. The large Br-gamma equivalent width (235 Angstroms) measured from integral field spectroscopy is indicative of a ~5 Myr starburst. The central source appears to be optically thin in emission, containing both a warm (~80 K) and a hot (~210 K) dust component, and the overall interstellar radiation fiel…
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of two luminous blue variable (LBV) stars in two extremely metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies, DDO 68 with 12+logO/H = 7.15 and PHL 293B with 12+logO/H = 7.72. These two BCDs are the lowest-metallicity galaxies where LBV stars have been detected, allowing to study the LBV phenomenon in the extremely low metallicity regime, and shedding light of the evolution of the first generation of massive stars born from primordial gas. We find that the strong outburst of the LBV star in DDO 68 occurred sometime between February 2007 and …
We present a study of elemental abundances in a sample of thirteen Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies, using the $\sim$10--37$μ$m high resolution spectra obtained with Spitzer/IRS. We derive the abundances of neon and sulfur for our sample using the infrared fine-structure lines probing regions which may be obscured by dust in the optical and compare our results with similar infrared studies of starburst galaxies from ISO. We find a good correlation between the neon and sulfur abundances, though sulfur is under-abundant relative to neon with respect to the solar value. A comparison of the eleme…
Optical spectra are presented for a sample of T dwarfs, obtained using the Keck 10m Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. Dominant features are discussed, including possible temperature diagnostics.
IZw18, a blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy with the 2nd lowest metallicity measured in a star-forming object, has been observed with all three instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. We present the deepest 5-36 micron mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectrum of this galaxy as yet obtained, as well as 3.6 to 70 micron imaging results. As with SBS0335-052E, another BCD with similar metallicity, IZw18 shows no detectable emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the continuum emission, from 15 to 70 micron, of IZw18 has a much steeper slope, more characteristic of a typical st…
The K dwarfs in the Pleiades fall nearly one half magnitude below a main sequence isochrone when plotted in a color-magnitude diagram utilizing V magnitude as the luminosity index and B-V as the color index. This peculiarity has been known for forty years but has gone unexplained and mostly ignored. When compared to Praesepe members, the Pleiades K dwarfs again are subluminous (or blue) in a color-magnitude diagram using B-V as the color index. However, using V-I as the color index, stars in the two clusters are coincident to M_V ~ 10; using V-K as the color index, Pleiades late K and M stars …
(abridged): Using HST and ground-based optical and NIR imaging data, we investigate whether the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy I Zw 18 possesses an extended low-surface-brightness (LSB) old stellar population underlying its star-forming (SF) regions. We show that the exponential intensity decrease observed in the filamentary LSB envelope of the BCD out to 18 arcsec (1.3 kpc at a distance of 15 Mpc) is not due to an evolved stellar disc, but rather due to extended ionized gas emission. Broad-band images reveal, after subtraction of nebular line emission, a compact stellar LSB component extendi…
A sample of 16 blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) in the Virgo Cluster has been imaged in the near-infrared (NIR) in $J$ and $K_s$ on the 2.1m telescope at OAN-SPM in Mexico. Isophotes as faint as $μ_J$ = 24 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and $μ_{K_s}$ = 23 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ have been reached in most of the targets. Surface brightness profiles can be fitted across the whole range of radii by the sum of two components: a hyperbolic secant (sech) function, which is known to fit the light profiles of dIs, and a Gaussian component, which quantifies the starburst near the centre. Isophotal and total fitted NIR …
We present the star formation history of UGCA 290, a galaxy with properties intermediate between Blue Compact Dwarfs and Dwarf Irregulars. This galaxy is particularly interesting because its young stellar population is extremely similar to that of the well-studied type iE Blue Compact Dwarf VII Zw 403, despite its different spatial morphology and old stellar content. Our Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 single-star photometry for UGCA 290 extends over nine magnitudes in I, and allows a detailed study of its star formation history. Using synthetic color-magnitude diagrams, w…
We report on the recovery of a Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) population belonging to the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr). The sequence is clearly identified in the (V, V-I) Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) obtained for about 500,000 stars in the region of the globular cluster M~54. The BHB morphology is similar to the analogous sequence in M~54, but it is unambiguously associated with Sgr since {\it(i)} it is detected well outside the main body of the cluster, up to more than 5 tidal radii from the cluster center and {\it(ii)} the BHB stars follow the radial distribution of the other ste…
We have obtained near-infrared images and spectra of three blue compact dwarf galaxies of intermediate sub-solar metallicity Tol~35, Tol~3 and UM 462. This work is part of a larger project aimed to study the star formation and the stellar populations of low metallicity galaxies in the near-infrared. In this frame work galaxies of intermediate metallicity represent an important step in understanding the most extreme cases filling the gap between solar and very low metallicity galaxies. We have observed HII region like spectra in all three galaxies; in all cases the star formation episodes are o…
We present the photometric properties of 1279 blue variable stars within the LMC. Photometry is derived from the MACHO database. The lightcurves of the sample exhibit a variety of quasi-periodic and aperiodic outburst behavior. A characteristic feature of the photometric variation is that the objects are reddest when at maximum outburst. A subset of 102 objects were examined spectroscopically. Within this subset, 91% exhibited Balmer emission in at least one epoch, in some cases with spectacular spectral variability. The variability observed in the sample is consistent with the establishment a…
We used a set of archived HST/WFPC2 images to probe the stellar population in the core of the nearby Galactic Globular Cluster (GGC) 47 Tuc. From the ultraviolet (UV) Color Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) obtained for ~4,000 stars detected within the Planetary Camera (PC) field of view we have pinpointed a number of interesting objects: (i) 43 blue stragglers stars (BSSs) including 20 new candidates; (ii) 12 bright (young) cooling white dwarfs (WDs) at the extreme blue region of the UV-CMD; (iii) a large population of UV-excess (UVE) stars, lying between the BSS and the WD sequences. The WD candidat…
(Abridged). One of the most metal-deficient blue compact galaxies (BCGs) HS 0822+3542 (Z=1/34 Zsun), is also one of the nearest such objects. A trigger mechanism for its current SF burst has remained unclear. We report the discovery of a very blue ((B-V)tot=0.08 and (V-R)tot=0.14) LSB (mu_B^0 > 23.4 arcsec^-2) dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxy, named SAO 0822+3545. Its small relative velocity and projected distance of ~11 kpc from the BCG imply their physical association. For this LSB galaxy, we present spectroscopic results, total B,V,R magnitudes, the effective radii and surface brightness (SB),…
We present a reanalysis of far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the globular cluster NGC 2808 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data were first analyzed by Brown and coworkers, with an emphasis on the bright, blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in this cluster. Here, our focus is on the population of fainter FUV sources, which include white dwarfs (WDs), blue stragglers (BSs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs). We have therefore constructed the deepest FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram of NGC 2808 and also searched for variability among our FUV sources. Overall, we have found approx. …
We infer the redshift distribution of the faint blue galaxy excess (FBE) at B=23.5 by subtracting the predicted distribution of giant/normal galaxies from the observed N(z) distribution for all types. This is possible because of the recent deep {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) WFPC2 morphological number counts which have convincingly demonstrated that little evolution of the giant population is seen to B=26.0. The mean redshift of the FBE at B=23.5 is found to be <z>_{FBE}=0.40 +/- 0.07 with upper and lower quartiles defined by z_{0.75}=0.58 +/- 0.05 and z_{0.25}=0.28 +/- 0.05, respectively.…
The results of deep long-slit spectroscopy of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0335-052 are presented. Down to intensity levels of 10^{-3 ... -4} of Hbeta, unprecedented for spectroscopy of extra-galactic giant H II regions, we detect numerous weak permitted and forbidden nebular lines in the brightest part of the galaxy. With varying degrees of confidence, the detections include lines of high-ionization ions like Fe^{4+} -Fe^{6+}, implying very hard ionizing radiation. Two broad emission features, possibly from Wolf-Rayet stars, and stellar He II 4200 absorpti…
SBS0335-052 is a blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) with one of the lowest known metallicities, Z$\sim$Z$_{\sun}$/41, making it a local example of how primordial starburst galaxies and their precursors might appear. A spectrum obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope clearly shows silicate absorption features, emission lines of [SIV] and [NeIII], and puts strong upper limits on the PAH emission features. The observed low resolution spectrum (R~90) extends from 5.3 to 35microns and peaks at ~28microns. The spectrum is compared to IRS observations of the prototyp…
