We investigate the emergence of universal dynamical scaling in quantum critical spin systems adiabatically driven out of equilibrium, with emphasis on quench dynamics which involves non-isolated critical points (i.e., critical regions) and cannot be a priori described through standard scaling arguments nor time-dependent perturbative approaches. Comparing to the case of an isolated quantum critical point, we find that non-equilibrium scaling behavior of a large class of physical observables may still be explained in terms of equilibrium critical exponents. However, the latter are in general non-trivially path-dependent, and detailed knowledge about the time-dependent excitation process becomes essential. In particular, we show how multiple level crossings within a gapless phase may completely suppress excitation depending on the control path. Our results typify non-ergodic scaling in continuous finite-order quantum phase transitions.
We investigate non-equilibrium dynamical scaling in adiabatic quench processes across quantum multicritical points. Our analysis shows that the resulting power-law scaling depends sensitively on the control path, and that anomalous critical exponents may emerge depending on the universality class. We argue that the observed anomalous behavior originates in the fact that the dynamical excitation process takes place asymmetrically with respect to the static multicritical point, and that non-critical energy modes may play a dominant role. As a consequence, dynamical scaling requires introducing n…
Given pseudo-random binary sequence of length $L$, assuming it consists of $k$ sub-sequences of length $N$. We estimate how $k$ scales with growing $N$ to obtain a {\it limiting} ergodic behaviour, to fulfill the basic definition of ergodicity (due to Boltzmann). The average of the consecutive sub-sequences plays the role of time (temporal) average. This average then compared to ensemble average to estimate quantitative value of a simple metric called Mean Ergodic Time (MET), when system is ergodic.
We study the Anderson transition on a generic model of random graphs with a tunable branching parameter $1<K\le 2$, through large scale numerical simulations and finite-size scaling analysis. We find that a single transition separates a localized phase from an unusual delocalized phase which is ergodic at large scales but strongly non-ergodic at smaller scales. In the critical regime, multifractal wavefunctions are located on few branches of the graph. Different scaling laws apply on both sides of the transition: a scaling with the linear size of the system on the localized side, and an unusua…
Using an efficient one and two qubit gate simulator, operating on graphical processing units, we investigate ergodic properties of a quantum Ising spin 1/2 model on a two dimensional lattice, which is periodically driven by a $δ$-pulsed transverse magnetic field. We consider three different dynamical properties: (i) level density and (ii) level spacing distribution of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, as well as (iii) time-averaged autocorrelation function of components of the magnetization. Varying the parameters of the model, we found transitions between ordered (non ergodic) and quantum cha…
The concept of weak ergodicity breaking is defined and studied in the context of deterministic dynamics. We show that weak ergodicity breaking describes a weakly chaotic dynamical system: a nonlinear map which generates subdiffusion deterministically. In the non-ergodic phase non-trivial distribution of the fraction of occupation times is obtained. The visitation fraction remains uniform even in the non-ergodic phase. In this sense the non-ergodicity is quantified, leading to a statistical mechanical description of the system even though it is not ergodic.
We study correlation properties of the generalized elastic model which accounts for the dynamics of polymers, membranes, surfaces and fluctuating interfaces, among others. We develop a theoretical framework which leads to the emergence of universal scaling laws for systems starting from thermal (equilibrium) or non-thermal (non-equilibrium) initial conditions. Our analysis incorporates and broadens previous results such as observables' double scaling regimes, (super)roughening and anomalous diffusion, and furnishes a new scaling behavior for correlation functions at small times (long distances…
Dynamical ensembles have been introduced to study constrained stochastic processes. In the microcanonical ensemble, the value of a dynamical observable is constrained to a given value. In the canonical ensemble a bias is introduced in the process to move the mean value of this observable. The equivalence between the two ensembles means that calculations in one or the other ensemble lead to the same result. In this paper, we study the physical conditions associated with ensemble equivalence and the consequences of non-equivalence. For continuous time Markov jump processes, we show that ergodici…
Dual-unitary quantum circuits can be used to construct 1+1 dimensional lattice models for which dynamical correlations of local observables can be explicitly calculated. We show how to analytically construct classes of dual-unitary circuits with any desired level of (non-)ergodicity for any dimension of the local Hilbert space, and present analytical results for thermalization to an infinite-temperature Gibbs state (ergodic) and a generalized Gibbs ensemble (non-ergodic). It is shown how a tunable ergodicity-inducing perturbation can be added to a non-ergodic circuit without breaking dual-unit…
Unlike classical system, understanding ergodicity from phase space mixing remains unclear for interacting quantum systems due to the absence of phase space trajectories. By considering an interacting spin model known as kicked coupled top, we elucidate the manifestation of phase space dynamics on local ergodic behavior of its quantum counterpart and quantum scarring phenomena. A transition to chaos occurs by increasing the kicking strength, and in the mixed phase space, the islands of regular motions within the chaotic sea clearly exhibit deviation from ergodicity, which we quantify from entan…
We theoretically study divergent fluctuations of dynamical events at non-ergodic transitions. We first focus on the finding that a non-ergodic transition can be described as a saddle connection bifurcation of an order parameter for a time correlation function. Then, following the basic idea of Ginzburg-Landau theory for critical phenomena, we construct a phenomenological framework with which we can determine the critical statistical properties at saddle connection bifurcation points. Employing this framework, we analyze a model by considering the fluctuations of an instanton in space-time conf…
We study the ergodic properties of superdiffusive, spatiotemporally coupled Levy walk processes. For trajectories of finite duration, we reveal a distinct scatter of the scaling exponents of the time averaged mean squared displacement delta**2 around the ensemble value 3-alpha (1<alpha<2) ranging from ballistic motion to subdiffusion, in strong contrast to the behavior of subdiffusive processes. In addition we find a significant dependence of the trajectory-to-trajectory average of delta**2 as function of the finite measurement time. This so-called finite-time amplitude depression and the scat…
We show that the relaxation dynamics near a glass transition with continuous ergodicity breaking can be endowed with a geometric interpretation based on percolation theory. At mean-field level this approach is consistent with the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of type-A liquid-glass transitions and allows to disentangle the universal and nonuniversal contributions to MCT relaxation exponents. Scaling predictions for the time correlation function are successfully tested in the F12 schematic model and facilitated spin systems on a Bethe lattice. Our approach immediately suggests the extension of MCT…
We study a non-ergodic transition in a many-body Langevin system. We first derive an equation for the two-point time correlation function of density fluctuations, ignoring the contributions of the third- and fourth-order cumulants. For this equation, with the average density fixed, we find that there is a critical temperature at which the qualitative nature of the trajectories around the trivial solution changes. Using a method of dynamical system reduction around the critical temperature, we simplify the equation for the time correlation function into a two-dimensional ordinary differential e…
A local excitation in a quantum many-particle system evolves deterministically. A time-reversal procedure, involving the invertion of the signs of every energy and interaction, should produce an excitation revival: the Loschmidt echo (LE). If somewhat imperfect, only a fraction of the excitation will refocus. We use such a procedure to show how non-inverted weak disorder and interactions, when assisted by the natural reversible dynamics, fully degrade the LE. These perturbations enhance diffusion and evenly distribute the excitation throughout the system. Such a dynamical paradigm, called ergo…
I prove a theorem on the precise connection of the time and phase space average of the Boltzmann equilibrium showing that the behaviour of a dynamical system with a stationary measure and a dominant equilibrium state is qualitatively ergodic.
The Rosenzweig-Porter model is a one-parameter family of random matrices with three different phases: ergodic, extended non-ergodic and localized. We characterize numerically each of these phases and the transitions between them. We focus on several quantities that exhibit non-analytical behaviour and show that they obey the scaling hypothesis. Based on this, we argue that non-ergodic chaotic and ergodic regimes are separated by a continuous phase transition, similarly to the transition between non-ergodic chaotic and localized phases.
We study ergodicity breaking in the clean Bose-Hubbard chain for small hopping strength. We see the existence of a non-ergodic regime by means of indicators as the half-chain entanglement entropy of the eigenstates, the average level spacing ratio, {the properties of the eigenstate-expectation distribution of the correlation and the scaling of the Inverse Participation Ratio averages.} We find that this ergodicity breaking {is different from many-body localization} because the average half-chain entanglement entropy of the eigenstates obeys volume law. This ergodicity breaking appears unrelate…
We study the statistical and dynamical properties of the quantum triangle map, whose classical counterpart can exhibit ergodic and mixing dynamics, but is never chaotic. Numerical results show that ergodicity is a sufficient condition for spectrum and eigenfunctions to follow the prediction of Random Matrix Theory, even though the underlying classical dynamics is not chaotic. On the other hand, dynamical quantities such as the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) and the number of harmonics, exhibit a growth rate vanishing in the semiclassical limit, in agreement with the fact that classical …
We examine the non-ergodic properties of scaled Brownian motion, a non-stationary stochastic process with a time dependent diffusivity of the form $D(t)\simeq t^{α-1}$. We compute the ergodicity breaking parameter EB in the entire range of scaling exponents $α$, both analytically and via extensive computer simulations of the stochastic Langevin equation. We demonstrate that in the limit of long trajectory lengths $T$ and short lag times $Δ$ the EB parameter as function of the scaling exponent $α$ has no divergence at $α=1/2$ and present the asymptotes for EB in different limits. We generalise …
We introduce a simple analysis of the structural complexity of infinite-memory processes built from random samples of stationary, ergodic finite-memory component processes. Such processes are familiar from the well known multi-arm Bandit problem. We contrast our analysis with computation-theoretic and statistical inference approaches to understanding their complexity. The result is an alternative view of the relationship between predictability, complexity, and learning that highlights the distinct ways in which informational and correlational divergences arise in complex ergodic and nonergodic…
Considerable research has led to ergodic isothermal dynamics which can replicate Gibbs' canonical distribution for simple ( small ) dynamical problems. Adding one or two thermostat forces to the Hamiltonian motion equations can give an ergodic isothermal dynamics to a harmonic oscillator, to a quartic oscillator, and even to the "Mexican-Hat" ( double-well ) potential problem. We consider here a time-reversible dynamical approach to Gibbs' "microcanonical" ( isoenergetic ) distribution for simple systems. To enable isoenergetic ergodicity we add occasional random rotations to the velocities. T…
The supersymmetry self-consistent approximation for the model of non-equilibrium thermodynamic system with quenched disorder is derived from the dynamical action calculated by means of generalized second Legendre transformation. The equations for adiabatic and isothermal susceptibilities, memory and field induced parameters are obtained on the basis of asymptotic analysis of dynamical Dyson equations. It is shown that the marginal stability condition that defines the critical point is governed by fluctuations violating FDT. The temperature of ergodicity breaking transition is calculated as a f…
In this paper we discuss the ergodic properties of quantum conservative systems by analyzing the behavior of two different models. Despite their intrinsic differencies they both show localization effects in analogy to the dynamical localization found in Kicked Rotator.
